Definitely the most fairy-tale venue set in the most picturesque town on the Romantic Road, Rothenburg! In the historic center, the structure already appears cartoonish from the outside, while once inside you are greeted by a feeling of amazement at the type of furnishings and surrounding objects The dark wood dominates, it seems to be trapped inside a fairy tale, crazy The staff is very cheerful, you feel at home The menu is varied and features typical traditional Bavarian dishes All the dishes we had were delicious, especially the pork ribs and the shank, mouth-watering!!! We are now at the end of our journey along the Romantic Road, a grand finale, I highly recommend you come to this place if you pass through these parts Top!!!

What a great location in the oldest building in Rothenburg o.d.T. Empathetic, warm innkeepers, attentive, fast and courteous service, wonderful, tasty food and an ambience that is second to none. It doesn't get any better. Just great. Absolute recommendation!

The dish of the day wasn't good and I felt sick, just a tap of beer. Very small and busy space.

We arrived without reservation and they accepted to sit us for one hour. The daily menu is only spoken. The waitress presented the options. There is nowhere the price of those options. You need to ask orelse you will know it only by the time that you receive the bill. We ordered the fish of the day. The dish was small and did not have a good portion of rice. Also, have in mind that the price of the items in the menu does not consider the 19% of tax. We noticed that some items had a different price in the menu from the price that was in the bill, for example the soup was 7,50 in the menu that was outside of the restaurant and the bill charged 8,50. Last thing, this restaurant do not accept card. Cash only!

Great hidden restaurant... In a cave! You need reservations to eat here.. they have a hidden room with a giant baffle used as a table..

Great service & delicious food - we can only recommend it. Home cooking, small menu - very good quality and fair prices. We had the sausage/cheese platter & grilled sausages with cabbage, Silvaner.

We were lucky enough to get the table in the vaulted cellar, the oldest in Rothenburg...the room was beautifully decorated, with candles in every corner. The table, which was an old bellows, was also lovingly prepared. While we were waiting, the owner (?) came to our table and told us something about the construction of the restaurant, very exciting... The service was more than good...the waitresses (two different people) kept asking if everything was good. While we were eating (we ordered the devil's skewer), the waitress offered to slide the meat from the skewer onto the plate and also explained to us what exactly was on the skewer. The food itself was also delicious, there is absolutely nothing to complain about... While we were eating the meat on the skewer, a waitress came again and took the remaining skewer with him so that it wouldn't get cold. Very attentive... I can definitely recommend a visit to "hell", it was a very nice evening :)

Traditional German restaurant that appears in all kinds of lists and is therefore frequently visited by tourists (just like the whole of Rothenburg, by the way). The food is good (not great) and a normal price. Great restaurant, but in my opinion it gets the better rating in TripAdvisor because of the ambiance. Beer was small by German standards.

Beautiful experience, the host was so kind and welcoming, the place was full but he let us inside and welcomed us in 2 small chairs, offering us a glass of fresh wine and explaining us the menu. Then we did sit and the place had so much a medieval style, very nice and stylish. Then the food came and it was very good, the host also offered me to have an extra kloße and brought some meat into the kitchen again so it could stay warm. The sweets are very good too and it has a very good price quality ratio

I have to laugh over how bad this place was. Service was horrible. I ordered bread and butter and had to ask twice for it to be brought out only for it to come without butter and half through our meal. The steak was so small for the price and the lamb was dry and tasteless. Get a picture outside and find a much better spot to eat. We literally left and went to another restaurant.

Quaint restaurant in Rothenburg's oldest house. Mainly Franconian cuisine, so not for light food lovers. Our dishes (fish, boiled beef, cheese platter) were delicious (as were the wines) and beautifully served. The service is brisk. It could perhaps be a bit more cordial. This could be due to the swarm of tourists in Rothenburg. I've experienced this in other restaurants too.

It really is a quaint old restaurant. However, 4.10 euros for a 0.3l beer is simply too expensive!!!!!! There's really no reason to offer the drinks so expensive. Schäufele for 20 euros isn't exactly a bargain either. Price performance is simply not right!

A unique dining experience in Rothenburg. The place was super busy for a Tuesday night, but the staff and service was excellent. My wife had the meat on skewers which i highly recommend and i went with the sausages and mushroom gravy that was also very good. Just note they only take cash.

Good Franconian cuisine. Great and attentive service that doesn't seem intrusive. The side dishes were added a second time so that we had a warm product again. We had Schäuffele with dumplings and Bavarian cabbage - very, very tasty. The price/performance ratio was right.

After 2 weeks in Germany, this is my favorite spot! Food, service, atmosphere! All superb! As other reviews have stated- cash only. But they tell you multiple times and it's written on the menu in English and German. Food portions were plenty big enough and the price- while not "cheap" was more than fair for the amazing food we had! The service was hands down the best we've had!!

I was there 20 years ago (before smart phones and easy reviews). Would recommend anyone go there if they want a genuinely cool experience. Good food, great atmosphere. Next time I come across the Atlantic, I'll be stopping here again. My brother and family are in Rottenburg now, and I told them to "Go to Hell" 😀

We were seduced by the great reviews that presented it as the must eat of Rottenmurg. No relation. Mediocre and overpriced food. €30 a schnitzel. I wouldn't recommend it.

Charming location, where our party of six was lucky enough to dine in the incredible old pottery room downstairs. The owners are so helpful and accommodating and the dinner menu, while on the smaller side, was carefully thought out and all of our dishes were presented beautifully. The recommended mushroom dishes off the seasonal menu were especially fantastic. Everything was of perfect temperature as well. Wonderful experience!

Went to the restaurant based on the good Google reviews and were unfortunately disappointed. The seasonal chanterelle schnitzel on offer for 29.50 euros consisted of a normal schnitzel cut in half. 1 bread dumpling was served with it, but at least you got another bread dumpling in addition. The portion was too small for me as a petite woman, I don't want to start with my husband... The salad that came with it was okay, occasionally there was a crunch in my teeth... It's a shame, a quaint restaurant but you get the feeling that you're a tourist is excluded... ATTENTION: Card payment not possible. Wouldn't recommend the restaurant.

Very typical German food and place. The food is nicely done even though not really transcendent. We had an unpleasant surprise at the end of the meal, they said they only accept cash when it's not indicated outside. We had to rush to an ATM to be able to pay for our meal. Be aware.

Worst experience in Germany! We have reserved a table at 8pm, we arrived at 8:09 and they gave away the table in front of us! They treated us badly for being late! Incredible ..don’t go there.

The place is very beautiful. Unfortunately, while we came with high expectations due to the reviews, we were half an hour late to sit at the table while we had a reservation and the food was served too late. The staff approached us politely, but the service needs a lot of work and coordination. In conclusion, the food is good, expensive but average.

Nice little restaurant with very friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere in a quiet street. Especially delicious dishes from our own kitchen. These people enjoy their work and take good care of their customers.

The food itself was okay, but too expensive for the quality. I had veal which, in my opinion, could have been cooked longer. Unfortunately, I was not at all satisfied with the service. The man who helped us was very unfriendly. We were looked at angrily when we wanted to change something while taking the order, so we didn't do it. After dinner I went out to get some air and my friend got some money. I had left my half-skimmed wine behind, as well as my sunglasses, so they knew we weren't done yet. I even indicated that we would be back soon. When we return to our table, suddenly there are other people at the table and my wine has simply been thrown away. Never experienced anything like this before and we will definitely NOT return here!

We were able to get a drink on the way to the accommodation in the evening. It was very tasty and the staff was friendly. Price/performance good, great. We only sat outside, but the atmosphere was good.

The roasted pork ribs are tender and delicious, but the roasted pork shoulder for 20.5 euros is too dry and hard, not as delicious as the ones eaten in Nuremberg. The beer is cold and delicious, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is great

Location is quaint, service is very polite and quick, but 2 main courses, 2 beers, a water and an Aperol for 75€ is definitely overpriced for the average quality. The price of €30.50 for a small, thin and somewhat dry schnitzel with sauce is simply €10-15 too expensive

First ones to arrive to store still don’t have food waited one hour for food asked waiter and said one minute, he lied to me.

Waited one full hour for food, waiter said 1 more minute, proceeded to wait 20 more minutes after that. Meanwhile tables that arrived 15 minutes after us had already finished their food when we were finally served.

We went here for dinner, the fish was a little bland even though it was their special. My husband's ribs looked better. Just remember to bring cash if you want to try it. I'd probably go elsewhere if there's a next time. 🤷

The two women servers were very rude. We booked a 6pm reservation months ahead and the lady berated us saying we were 1 hour early. We showed her the confirmation email showing 6pm was correct, but it didn’t matter, we still had to wait an hour for service at an empty table while waiting for a specific table to finish their meal so she could move us to their table after. She didn’t even offer us an apology or drinks as we waited. Two small cheap quality dishes and three under-filled 0.3L beers for 68 euro with bad service is not worth it. They also charge you for water and bread. Would not recommend, seems like a tourist trap. Update, instead of apologizing, the owner has lied to Google several times to have my review taken down. I have had to appeal several times to have my review re-uploaded. Maybe the owner should offer better customer service with integrity instead of going about things in this churlish dishonest manner.

A little cute restaurant with nice atmosphere and fast service. The staff was friendly and helped us to decide with the order. I had the soup of the day which happened to be a goulash soup and my sister ordered the pork ribs. The goulash was very good - the meat was tender and the soup tasted great with all the herbs and spices. The ribs were just lukewarm and the taste wasn't the best - I tried a bit and didn't like the taste of the pork grease. Everything else was good - including the roasted potatoes and the salad that came with the ribs.

Neat atmosphere, great service and good food. The ribs were very tender and fell off the bone. The bratwurst and sauerkraut was fantastic. We had a green garlic soup with salmon pieces. That was absolutely delicious. As for the skewer, it came with a wonderful sauce that was necessary as the meat was cooked well done. the Brown bread was delicious. We enjoyed everything we had and would recommend. Make sure you email to make a reservation.

We went to Restaurant Zur Höll two evenings in a row because we liked and enjoyed it so much on the first evening. We don't think this restaurant is a tourist trap and the notice about paying in cash is at the entrance and the notice came right at the beginning. The asparagus soup was very good. We had the Schäufele and the devil's skewer and both were delicious. The location is simply quaint and the service was friendly and attentive. Thank you very much for two great dinners.

All hell is breaking loose here...always full house with great service. Be sure to reserve a table otherwise you risk not being able to enjoy it. Dishes are really tasty and of good quality. Dish of the day: pasta with wild garlic for around €15, which is equivalent to a child's portion and the plain pasta from the supermarket is definitely a few euros too much!

Our reservation was for 7.30 ,seated at 7.40. Drinks arrived at 8.20pm .Food arrived 9.05pm. We prompted staff on a number of occasions and were told each time "1 minute" When food finally arrived one was the wrong dish.

We have been coming to the restaurant every year for over 20 years and it is always a special experience.

Yesterday I waited for confirmation of a dinner reservation, but in vain. They responded quickly to my first request, but after that there was radio silence. With respect, customer-oriented looks different! Edit: The inbox and spam folder were checked several times yesterday and today. Nothing came from you after the response to the first contact. I would kindly ask you to take a look at your inbox as if it were a spam folder before you accuse potential guests of this.

An amazing experience all around. The building is one of the oldest in Rothenburg. It's beautiful both inside and out, and transports you back to a medieval tavern. My wife has the Teufelspeiß, and she loves the gravy. I had the Schäufele, and it was absolutely amazing. Crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. We also had a side dish of the Fränkische Bratwurst Mit Kraut, which was also really great. We finished off with the Kaiserschmarrn that was heavenly. Everything was absolutely amazing and completed our beautiful German experience. Must make reservations in advance. Sorry for the half eaten pictures, but we were soo excited about the food we forgot to take pictures first 😂😂

Nice place and even though it was full, service was quick. However, the asparagus we ordered was more than 'al dente' - it was almost raw! The potatoes were like they were pre-cooked. I have no idea why so many guests wanted to eat there. It was by far the worst food we ate during our trip through Bavaria. On top of that, only cash payment, without us being informed of this at the beginning or there being a sign there. Nowadays a 'no-go'

Unfortunately, “Zur Höll” disappointed us quite a bit. Because of the good reviews we chose it for dinner. Unfortunately the food wasn't particularly good, rather average canteen quality. The schnitzel consisted almost entirely of breading, the Schäufele tasted like it had been warmed up three times. The schnitzel was replaced without any problems, it was also better, but still of inferior quality. The asparagus was good, but the overall impression of the food was mediocre to bad. The second point was the benches, the depth of which is far too narrow for adults to sit there for more than 5 minutes. We can't complain about the service, it was very nice and the complaints were addressed. But we would have expected better food from a restaurant with this claim and the reviews. We wouldn't come here again.

A hellish evening with hellishly nice service and hellishly good food....a visit to hell is worth it...even while you're still alive.....

First of all - we only ate here because we still had a voucher. However, due to the many good reviews, we were still hopeful. The asparagus was actually raw, the schnitzel was from the deep fryer and the snack board! Cheapest product on a board that has been used so often that it has almost taken on a life of its own. A Franconian bratwurst that was everything but not a Franconian bratwurst. As is well known, one can argue about taste, but the board on which the snack was served was an absolute disgrace. Hardwood people! Hardwood would be the solution. Or what speaks against a plate? The board was so sparsely stocked that everything would have easily fit on a plate. You immediately lose your appetite. Absolute tourist nap and you were really tempted to warn everyone not to eat here. The service… was partly trying, partly stressed. And that even though there was really little going on. The food took almost an hour to arrive... overall one of the worst places we've ever been to. It's a shame that tourists go home thinking THIS is German (or Franconian) cuisine. P.S. In Bavaria, serving a shandy in only 0.3 is unusual. But then also in a pilsner glass... all in all, simply poorly done gastronomy at a deluxe price. Addendum: If it had been about one or two things, we would certainly have said something straight away. But if there is a lack of hygiene, in our eyes hops and malt are lost. I don't think the assessment of a child is relevant here. By the way, he would have been happy to have his own menu - children don't want to be left out. But this is just a value-free tip for the future.

They only accept cash and do not take credit cards. The year is 2024, the internet is everywhere. When we ask what kind of service this is, they say it is our choice, but it is our choice to want to use a credit card. There is no indication beforehand that only cash was transferred. It's unacceptable, we wouldn't eat it if we knew.

I don't know why it's so popular... The atmosphere is old-fashioned and nice, but the food is average and not much in quantity. The taste of beer is not good either. The price has risen and taxes have been added separately, making it expensive.

It's unbelievable that wild garlic noodles with shrimps, which don't even taste good, cost €29 - and a 0.1 wine costs €11 - after all, this isn't a gourmet restaurant!! It's a shame, but mostly only tourists come there once and never come back, so the prices don't seem to matter!

Super cute restaurant in a 1000 year old house. Food was great, service was exceptionally friendly and funny! Most of their mains are not on the menu, so listen carefully when they tell you. Seating is limited, so reservation highly recommended.
