Am Platzl in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

What a nightmare! Once a truly wonderful restaurant with beautifully presented and deliciously homemade fresh food, today it's a tourist trap with canned food and poorly cooked frozen food. The "Wiener Schnitzel with Fried Potatoes": two frozen patties from a discount store, a handful of over-fried potato slices marinated in pungent garlic oil, and a salad that might have been fresh a week ago, served in a slimy vinegar dressing. Absolutely inedible! The "fresh goulash soup": a lukewarm, watery canned soup with no real meat in it! It was served with a partially charred pre-made pita, which was also drowned in garlic oil. It seemed only logical and fitting that this potpourri of horrors was rounded off with two exquisite dressings (ketchup and mayo in a shapely plastic squeeze bottle from Penny). When we asked the kitchen, it was made very clear to us that the management/food warmer couldn't care less whether the food was edible and the guests were satisfied. I've rarely seen such a disrespectful person in a kitchen! Absolutely dishonorable! The only glimmer of hope: the Coke was okay!

The pictures are from the previous restaurant. They were mistakenly "lured" by it. It's now a Greek restaurant with nothing but fried convenience foods. Inedible. What a shame.

We entered the restaurant motivated by the excellent Google reviews. Despite it being a Sunday lunchtime, we were surprised to see the place was almost empty. Initially, we were served bread with butter and a delicious curry sauce. However, we had a minor inconvenience when we found a hair in one of the rolls. The main course was acceptable, although for the price of 30 euros, we expected something more special. Unfortunately, the experience was marred by the bathroom conditions, which were quite unkempt and dirty. We couldn't even flush the toilet. Furthermore, we were surprised to find that cards weren't accepted that day, and this wasn't communicated to us beforehand. Overall, based on our experience, we wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

The food was disappointing. Both the fried potatoes and the "schnitzel" (meat croquette) were obviously frozen goods that had never seen a pan; both arrived deep-fried. The service was, however, very quick, and the decor was pleasingly simple.

We also discovered this restaurant because of the good reviews. So we were just as surprised when we saw the food. Very simple, with lots of fried food, and not particularly tasty. As described in the recent reviews. However, the service was very nice, friendly, and accommodating. I can't agree with the others. Disappointing if you expect more, and a bit too expensive if you expect exactly what you get.

This was supposed to be the end of a beautiful day! Unfortunately, the current owner seems to be using the good reviews to push his "food" on guests. Menu in a folder, fried potatoes... we were irritated!

Attention! Important notice from September 17, 2025: The previous owner, who served fine dining, went bankrupt. The new tenant reopened in the summer of 2025. However, the restaurant's name remains the same, "Am Platzl," but it now offers German-Greek dishes. (See menu photos.) Outdated: Excellent food. I'm so impressed. I found his stand at the Food Truck Street Food Festival. A pure culinary experience! If you missed it, you should definitely pay a visit to his restaurant "Am Platzl." It's worth it.

I don’t understand how this restaurant has so many good reviews—it feels like they belong to a completely different place. The food we received was burned, the drinks even had black particles floating in them, and everything tasted terrible. The place didn’t feel clean at all, and the food looked nothing like the photos other people posted. Very disappointing experience, I would not recommend this restaurant.

The photos and most of the reviews appear to belong to a previous owner/chef of the restaurant. The food doesn't match the photos, and the menu is completely different. The food was below average, and the service seemed unmotivated and rather irritated. Far from what I expect from a 4.6 rating.

The quality of the chicken was poor in my opinion, like rubber. The fried potatoes were potato slices from a deep fryer. The salmon wasn't a highlight either. We wouldn't recommend it. Just to add, the service was very friendly.

Where to begin... we were expecting a nice, local restaurant with high-quality food. The previous reviews sounded extremely promising, and the pictures underscored the quality. Now for the real experience: we received a cold welcome; the menu consisted of A4 sheets of paper stapled into a black school folder. The food was indistinguishable from conventional frozen food from a discount store. Fried potatoes, which were actually cooked with garlic, were in no way related to real potatoes; you just got the impression that you were eating chips. Freshness is definitely a foreign concept in this restaurant. The salmon, which was supposed to be the main ingredient, was unfortunately not even remotely mediocre. The highlight of the meal was the tzatziki served as a side dish. Now let's talk about the ambiance of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the only music played was strange in the background, which did not enhance the atmosphere at all. All in all, one can say that the quality and overall experience of the restaurant has declined considerably. I hope this review helps to resolve current issues.

Briam, a vegetarian dish. Wasn't served as ordered. The potatoes were completely missing, and the remaining vegetables were completely overcooked and tasteless. A small trace of feta was added. Not recommended.

The average rating of 4.6 still has to come from the previous owner. The "Franconian Bratwurst" I ordered came fresh from the foil wrapper and was served with a portion of dry coleslaw. The whole thing was train station bar-like.

We visited this restaurant based on the positive Google reviews, but our experience was less than positive. The service was very curt, and the quality of the food (tastes differ) was lacking in our opinion. The schnitzels were greasy and not particularly flavorful. The spaghetti with "tomato" sauce tasted absolutely awful. Other visitors who indicated dietary requirements were turned away, probably because it was too complicated. Highly recommended!

Little surprise of real good tasting greek food in this town, go and try!

ATTENTION!!! All the photos posted are from the previous management, but this isn't clearly stated. We suspected this already when we read the menu, and it became a certainty when we were served our dishes. We ate terribly: a sad plate of garlic-fried zucchini with pita bread and tzatziki presented as if it were a soup kitchen, a slice of defrosted salmon dripping with oil, and the grilled sausage was the only thing remotely edible.

We had a schnitzel with fries and salad, a baked feta cheese, and scalloped beans. It tasted okay, but based on previous Google reviews, we expected something completely different. Apparently, the owner has changed. (German-Greek cuisine)

We were passing through and looking for something tasty to eat. The good thing was that the food came quickly. The place is also very nicely situated, and you can sit outside. Unfortunately, there were so many flies, so we had to sit inside despite the sunshine. The interior is unfortunately very unloved and dark. The food wasn't good either, for our taste. Very greasy and nothing special. Unfortunately, it was also very expensive. We wouldn't recommend it.

We tried to make a reservation in advance in mid-January and received no response, just an acknowledgment. We then tried to contact them by phone. Unfortunately, that didn't work either. The same thing happened to us before with this restaurant. The website said it was open, so we went there. The result: the restaurant was closed, with no information as to why or for how long. Fantastic food! The chef is an absolute master, and the food is simply divine. There are classic dishes with a twist that always works. The sauces really impressed me. There were also amuse-bouches beforehand, which were already amazing. The chef came out of the kitchen later and chatted with us for a while – he was extremely nice, and it's wonderful to see how passionately he cooks. I would definitely come back!

That's not how it works!!!!!!!!. Sorry !!!!!!!!!!! October 2024 I'm really sorry, but that's not how it works. I know you're really trying, and you're very nice, but you can't serve that as a restaurant or charge for it. Please hire a chef. Just because you draw a two-colored mayo pattern across the plate doesn't make it any better. In detail: Bread and butter, first of all. The butter was completely covered in seasoned salt. Inedible. As a "greeting from the kitchen," a cold beetroot soup. Watery, bland, without any seasonings or other ingredients. The beef fillet was okay in terms of meat quality, but completely drowned in sauce and two-colored mayonnaise!!!!! (How can you put mayo on a fillet steak???) The spinach was also swimming in the sauce, and the carrots were separate from a can. Guys, I swear, I couldn't eat it, I just couldn't. It's never happened to me. My wife felt the same way. We quickly said our goodbyes and wrote off the almost €90 for two people. I still had a stomach ache the whole next day. If any restaurant ever deserved to have Frank Rosin come, it would be you. I wish you the same. Until then, please don't try the magic kitchen, maybe just schnitzel and fries. You can do that without any training. If you don't want to believe it, it's your own fault.

Es tut mir echt Leid, aber das geht so nicht. Ich weiß dass ihr Euch echt Mühe gebt, und ihr seid sehr nett, aber das kann man nicht als Restaurant servieren bzw. Geld dafür nehmen. Bitte stellt einen Koch ein. Nur weil man zweifarbig Mayomuster über den Teller zeichnet wird es nicht besser Im Detail: Brot&Butter vorne weg. Die Butter war wirklich komplett mit Gewürzsalz überschüttet. Ungenießbar. Als "Gruß aus der Küche" ein kaltes Süppchen von Rote Beete. Wässrig, Fade, ohne jegliche Gewürze oder weitere Zutaten. Das Rinderfilet war von der Fleischqualität ok, aber komplett ersoffen in Soße und zweifarbig Mayonaise!!!!!, (Wie kann man Mayo auf ein Filetsteak machen ???) Der Spinat schwamm ebenfalls in der Soße, die Möhrchen waren aus der Dose separat. Leute, ich schwör's, ich konnte es nicht Essen, es ging einfach nicht. Ist mit noch nie passiert. Meiner Frau ging es ebenso. Haben uns dann rasch verabschiedet und die knapp EUR 90 für zwei Personen abgeschrieben. Habe den ganzen nächsten Tag trotzdem Bauchgrimmen gehabt. Wenn irgendein Restaurant es jemals verdient hätte, das Frank Rosin kommt. Ihr wärt es. Ich wünsche es Euch. Bis dahin bitte keine Zauberküche versuchen, sondern vielleicht nur Schnitzel Pommes. Das bekommt man auch ohne Ausbildung hin Wer es nicht glauben will. Selbst Schuld.

Am Platz'l is a small but fine restaurant. The chef sees himself as such, and with every dish on the menu, he proves that he knows his craft. The pigeon and the roast chicken are highly recommended. The homemade salads are a delight. The chef's greetings and bread with a special, seasoned butter are served as a matter of course. Please keep up the good work!

The ingredients in the food were good—but the same extremely oily sauce dominated everything. The restrooms were dirty, as was the menu.

I've only read good things about this restaurant. When we walked in, we were the only customers, and I was about to leave. But then the food arrived, and it was so plentiful that I recommend ordering just one meal and a robber's plate! The portions are generous, even for overweight people. The food is very individually prepared. Perhaps not quite mainstream, but honest and juicy... absolutely fitting for the medieval ambiance.

A very ambivalent visit. Greetings from the kitchen were good, the meat was great but unfortunately the same mixture of spices and dip was drizzled over all the dishes. Was unnecessary. Ich habe mit meinem besten Freund ein paar ansonsten wirklich tolle Tage in Rothenburg verbracht und als vermeintliches Highlight waren wir im Am Platzl. Leider haben wir uns von der hohen Bewertung täuschen lassen und nicht erkannt dass der Großteil der fünf Sterne Bewerter die erste Bewertung abgegeben hat. Lieber Herr Toth: auch wenn wir es erst im Nachgang realisiert haben sollte Sie mal darauf achten, dass Sie nicht in den Bewertungen, die Sie selber für sich schreiben, um die negativen. Bewertungen auszugleichen, die selben gravierenden Rechtschreibfehler wie in ihren Kommentaren zu eben diesen negativen Bewertungen haben. Aber beeindruckend wie hier der Wirt und die Küche (wohl auch alles in Personalunion) gelobt werden.. Schon nach dem Gruß aus der Küche war eigentlich klar wie es weitergeht: ein geschichteter Butterberg zugeschüttete mit Paprikasalz, dieses natürlich hausgemacht….. danach Vorspeisen und Hauptgänge alle mit diesem Salz und Remouladensauce garniert und gewürzt waren. Gemüse verkocht, Fleisch lag mit Brühe (Sauce war das kaum zu nennen) auf dem Teller. Kleiner Tipp: Unbedingt sofort was unterlegen, da meinem Freund die Brühe direkt auf die Hose gelaufen ist. Falls ihr überlegt dorthin zu gehen unbedingt die Kommentare der niedrigen Bewertungen lesen, die sind ehrlich und treffen ins Schwarze….Ach ja und habt Bargeld dabei. Auch wenn es nirgends steht kann man nur mit Bargeld bezahlen. Sehr ungewöhnlich, passt aber und liegt sich nicht am defekten Lesegerät….

The best review I've ever written goes to this restaurant! I have absolutely NOTHING to complain about. There was a very tasty “greeting from the kitchen”, the food looked like it was pictured and tasted excellent! Rarely have I eaten something so good. The prices are justified. Exquisite food in a rustic atmosphere. Plus points: although the landlord has had bad experiences, dogs are still welcome.

This is the classic restaurant that thinks it has a Michelin star for €40 but is just a scammer. A plate full of paprika powder, a sauce, lots of herbs on top and you think you're a chef. A disgrace.

Very tasty food, the price is high but we were really satisfied. You get small recommendations from the kitchen in advance, for us it was a baguette with butter and homemade cream cheese spread, and a delicious cold berry foam soup with a touch of wild garlic salt. My husband had the beef tenderloin and I had the baked chicken. Everything was really tasty and high quality, also beautifully presented on the plate. Thank you!

The boss cooks himself and the food is wonderful. The host is very friendly, gluten-free food was no problem! The greetings from the kitchen were first class, the main course was a dream and the portions were more than enough even for hungry people! Gladly again!

I'm sorry that I cannot leave score zero for this disgusting restaurant. I was late for the reservation and it was my fault clearly, but the man had passed me by several times, so I had waited there for the longtime. And after a long waiting, he came to me and told to me that I was late and reservation has been cancelled already. Since the restaurant was absolutely empty I had a doubt that he is a racist and he intentionally ignored me to let me stand there for the long time, instead of informing properly my reservation has been cancelled. For sure restaurant can reject the late arrival but make the people stand in front of him and ignore the guest intentionally to reject after a long waiting is an unimaginable bad manner. Hopefully, if he wants to be a racist, I recommed him to learn English at least since it is a right global weapon, instead of fumbling the language as a child level and instead of sending a disgusting kiss to an woman guest because of his poor English abaility. Please have a doubt if the review score of this restaurant is an honest one or not, since too many reviews hhad been written by single review writter or less than ten review generators.

Very tasty food, highly recommended!

Make reservations and don’t miss out on this little gem! The Chef was serious, but incredibly talented (and humble). Truly thought he had Michelin type culinary training but he shared his schooling. The thoughtfulness of bringing out flavored butter and bread (and it’s incredible display) plus a “welcome to the kitchen” drink from the chef started off our meal. The meal itself was easily the best we’ve had while in Europe this past month. The Chef’s creativity, presentation, and flavors of all five of our meals were incredible. Highly recommend.

This place is truly incredible! Innovative cuisine, refined tastes and very good combinations create original and tasty dishes. If you are tired of eating the usual 2/3 French-speaking dishes, this is the place for you! You have to book because they have few places, but it's worth it, very friendly staff and abundant dishes. We were welcomed by a very warm and friendly owner/chef. The food was absolutely great. It doesn't matter whether it's the little greeting from the kitchen with a homemade spice mix on butter with bread, the delicious Hungarian cherry soup or our main courses (I've never eaten such a good roast and the homemade potato salad was also very good). The portions are large and the quality, especially of the meat, is very good. We would be happy to come back if we end up in Rothenburg.

We decided on this place because of the good reviews. We were first served a wild garlic soup, which everyone got for free. However, I had previously ordered wild garlic soup before I knew about the free soup. This then meant that I got soup twice and had to wait a full 65 minutes for the main meal, which was an undercooked baked potato. All the food and crockery were smeared in paprika, which did nothing for the dish. Boring experience. Far too expensive.

Wow. Just WOW. Am Platzl is amazing. Food is fabulous, atmosphere is great, the staff are friendly. If you are visiting Rotenburg, find this restaurant (it is not hard to find). The menu may rotate a bit, so only recent reviews may be accurate as to what is available. A family of 6 can expect to spend €180 to €220, but it is well worth it. For tourists: bring euros, as they do not take cards.

It is a place on the edge of the tourist hustle and bustle where you can enjoy very good food!

INCREDIBLE restaurant. Every single dish was unique and delicious. The fillet is the best I’ve had in my life. Also, the chef/waiter is super friendly and welcoming.

Really sweet owner who went out of his way to make us and a few other guests food even though we came after the Kitchen closed. (All restaurants that we could find in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber had the Kitchen closed at 20.30ish). And even though our little dog played a bit with another dog at the neighbouring table he was very sweet and accepting while he tried to waiter around two playful puppies. Before the meal we got nice bread with paprika butter which was surprisingly good. For main course I had the fried chicken which was really nice and the potatoes with the fermented cucumbers that came with it was a Delicious supplement to the chicken. My girlfriend got a baked potato which she thoroughly enjoyed. Most of the dishes came with what I think is a Holiday Dip. The location itself is very cosy and charming, but how can't it be when located in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber? Visitering Am Platzl was a experience I enjoyed very much.

We came up from Kempten with friends and tried Am Platzl based on the online recommendations. Wow, was this place fantastic!! The outdoor ambience, the super friendly owner, the surprise appetizer, the delightful service, and the outstanding food just can't be beat!! We will definitely be coming back and introducing our additinal visitors to this little gem in Rothenburg!!

Apart from the beautiful location, a little bit away from the hustle and bustle, the innkeeper was very accommodating and friendly. Since I can't eat gluten, I had fried zucchini instead of bread 😍 how great is that, please!? 🤩 The white wine spritzer was very, very generous and the salad was absolutely great! All in all wonderful! Thanks. I'd love to come back!

We found a “Hidden Gems” in Rothenburg. Chef Achim was busy but he still served us patiently. We showed him the “googled” food pictures we would like to order but he said he changes the menu every 2.5 months. Surprisedly, he served us 2 additional special food items which is not in the menu and they tastes glorious. The steak was awesome and i would love to have it again if i visit next time. Vibe is great and it’s a best spot for relaxing after sightseeing.

From the reception to the farewell, everything was perfect. The preparation and presentation of the food on the plates is simply perfect. Here you can tell that the boss (cook) comes from star restaurants. First of all, bread with (homemade) butter and curry dip. Afterwards greetings from the kitchen. Price/performance very good (with this quality of food, in my opinion, one or two euros more could be charged). Were here for the second time today. Simply everything in perfection. Food again of the best quality and very, very tasty. We'll definitely come more often.

A really delicious restaurant that we visit every time we are in Rothenburg. Small and cozy, a one-man show for kitchen and service, which is impressive as there is always time for a little small talk, but the waiting times never suffer. Super delicious dishes on a small menu, but always with bread in advance and a small greeting from the kitchen. The prices are worth every cent. We will continue to stop at the “Platzl” every time we visit Rothenburg.

The food is amazing, it was a pleasant surprise. The chef, who is also the waiter, does everything and is super attentive to everyone who arrives. The preparation of the dishes is careful and the combination of flavors is incredible.

Very tasty food, friendly host and good beer - what more could you want. A slightly quieter restaurant outside the city walls with a small but fine menu. Just try it and get involved, it's totally worth it. At first we were the only guests, but the outside area was full by the time we left. We would be happy to come back next time we visit Rothenburg.
