We loved this restaurant in every way. It started with the flexibility to give us two more seats even though all tables were pre-booked and continued with excellent local cuisine. We were also impressed by the service, who always kept an overview despite the full house and, despite the stress, responded to special requests and always remained friendly and calm. We were lucky enough to spontaneously get a seat in this cozy, rustic restaurant. You should probably pre-order normally. The food was just really good, the service was friendly, cheerful and accommodating. The next time we come to Freiburg, this will definitely be one of our points of contact again. We've been here three times now and it's been really nice every time. Good service, very personable, warm and hospitable. Portions are generous. Would love to come back. The allergen list, especially in relation to grains containing gluten, needs to be revised, but you can get good advice if you ask.

The best place in Freiburg to eat. Service incredibly committed, friendly and often joking. The food with the traditional Baden cuisine excellent. The wine selection is high class. Often full both at lunch and in the evening, while other restaurants around are almost empty.

We came here as tourists, but rather by chance. Food good and rustic, good price/performance ratio and international audience. There were extremely interesting conversations with Americans and Swiss.

This was the second time we have been to this rustic and good restaurant with a beautiful outdoor area right in Freiburg's old town and we will definitely come back. I had the homemade meatballs with salad, spaetzle and mushroom cream sauce (see photo), my partner had the saddle of veal steak with spaetzle. Both dishes were excellent and very tasty! Very good food (Badische Flädlesuppe, beef rump steak with fries and roast pork with spaetzle), the two ladies (one blonde, probably the owner, extremely accommodating and very hospitable; the other, calm, extremely hard-working in a positive sense and very friendly). Table 11 outside was very pleasant, quiet location, very close to the cathedral. Can be combined with a nice evening walk. We'd love to come back, thank you :) LG

La nourriture est typiquement régionale, copieuse et bonne. J’aurais pu donner 5 étoiles. Sauf qu’au moment de payer par carte bancaire, le patron m’a demandé combien de pourboire je souhaitais laisser et voulait saisir 10% d’office. Il m’a présenté cela comme obligatoire et destiné « au personnel ». Étonné, j’ai finalement cédé pour le minimum : 5%. Après recherches, les pourboires sont bien facultatifs en Allemagne. Et sur mon ticket de CB, la mention « Trinkgeld » apparaît clairement. Bref, cette impression de m’être fait prendre pour un imbécile par un patron de restaurant roublard m’a fortement déçue et a gâché la soirée. Dommage.

Good evening dear ones, After we have already visited you in Freiburg about 6 times, we are now giving a review that also corresponds to reality. The restaurant is a real insider tip. Something hidden but just LEEECKER. It's definitely worth it. Whenever we are in the Freiburg area from Switzerland, we love eating with Isabella and Michael and their team, even with our child! I really don't know where you shouldn't be child-friendly, we haven't noticed anything yet. You are very warm and loving to our son too. Here children can also be children (the basic requirement here is education of children, and not parents who think they are childcare). The ambience with the Bächle and the old-fashioned but very homely restaurant definitely invite you to linger. The staff is always very friendly, including to our child. The menu isn't huge, but there's something for everyone and it's FRESHLY and deliciously prepared, within a normal time frame and fresh!! Kitchen. It should also be clear that when there are few guests, things go a little faster than when the restaurant is full. But that's completely normal. Your kitchen can definitely do more than just frozen frass, as some comments claim. With all the reviews I read here about everything being so bad and unfriendly etc., I really wonder whether these people have nothing better to do than spreading lies and untruths and whether they have ever visited you were?? Volle Punktzahl für dieses zentral am Münster gelegene kleine gemütliche Restaurant. Der Chef und die Chefin kümmern sich liebevoll persönlich um jeden Gast. Wir hatten wirklich Mühe bei den ganzen leckeren lokalen Gerichten und etwas auszusuchen. Wir haten dann das Schnitzel und ein Steak. Das Schnitzel kam super kross und die Spätzle und die Rahmsosse waren ein Traum- ebenso der Beilagensalat mit super Dressing. Das Steak war Top-Qualität und die Kräuterbutter selbstgemacht. Die Portionen waren so üppig das man den Nachtisch ausfallen lassen musste. Fazit: solche Restaurants sind rar geworden in Deutschland- Für und steht fest wo wir wieder einkehren werden wen wir im schönen Freiburg sind.

I will agree with previous comments about the 10% tips for tourists, they present to me a bill and when paying by card, the guy hid deliberatly the payment machine (displaying a 10% overcharged bill) For every tourists (I think no german will be overcharged), be careful when paying your bill in this restaurant !! And for the restaurant, don't answer to me saying it's a lie, I can prove it !

Good schnitzels and salad, service was great

We were looking for a typical address for Germanic cuisine. We have not been disappointed. Special mention to the waitress who performs despite a large crowd. Go there without hesitation.

The experience was being quite ok until the bill arrived. First, they did not let us check it before paying; second, it was not possible to see the price in the dataphone. But the worst part was when we saw they charged 10% of the bill (15€) as a tip without asking. Normally they always charge or they ask if you want to give a 0, 5 or 10%, but not this time. In addition, the waiter was quite rude (I understand that because he was alone and with lots of tables to serve!). To be said, the knuckle (Haxe) was really good. Unfortunately the fries had to be paid apart. However, we were quite dissapointed with the treatment and because what happened with the bill.

We found accommodation in the rustic restaurant without any problems, unfortunately the benches are a bit far away from the table. There are a few daily specials to choose from in addition to the general menu. Service was pretty friendly, waiting time was just okay. The portions are very generous, at least for expensive dishes. I found it a bit unusual that the side salad was brought beforehand and then taken away again, so where is the side dish? But it was always tasty.

A beautiful location and the boss is an absolutely approachable person. We started talking, 100% satisfied with Baden cuisine, what else can I say? I'm really surprised to find such a great shop in the city center. 😊

Yesterday we had dinner with friends at the Kranz. Luckily one of the few tables outside was free. The great ambience and the nice atmosphere in the alley invited you to linger. The manageable menu leaves nothing to be desired. Good home-style German cuisine. The photos in the reviews didn't promise too much. We girls decided on veal schnitzel with homemade spaetzle (changing the order from Brägel was no problem) and the men chose the knuckle with fries. First of all, we were given a delicious fresh salad to go with the schnitzel. The gravy we ordered with it was honest and delicious. The cranberries rounded everything off. It's been a long time since I've had such a delicious schnitzel. All four of us were very enthusiastic and are glad that we didn't get a seat in the restaurants we had previously visited. Great address – we’ll be happy to come back on our next visit to Freiburg.

This is our first time in Freiburg (we came a long way from Thailand). First thing we noticed in this restaurant is the hard-working, energetic owner, who never stops walking and waiting the tables. Even though the customers keep coming in, he greets them immediately and arranges them seated. The foods and drinks are incredibly delicious. The atmosphere is fantastic, full of locals and friendly vibes. Would come again someday.

The “Zum Kranz” restaurant is the nice, cozy pub that you know from home. Good food, delicious beer and friendly service! We, too far away, didn't have a reservation on a Saturday evening and were kind enough to sit at the counter while the place was already packed. Here we got to know the landlord, head waiter and kitchen staff - everyone was super nice and the atmosphere in the team was familiar and nice to see. We can recommend coming here to anyone who wants to enjoy an honest, no-frills restaurant with excellent food. And there was also delicious schnapps. Like this :)

Very rustic restaurant with a cozy atmosphere in the old town. The landlord and the staff are very friendly and attentive. The dishes are of high quality. The Wiener Schnitzel comes with 2 with a large bowl of fried potatoes. In addition, the sanitary facilities are very clean, even if the somewhat steep stairs may not be suitable for everyone, which is of course due to the historic building.

Nous sommes arrivés un peu tôt, avant l’ouverture, mais après une balade de 15 minutes, très bon accueil : on nous donne les cartes de menus dans toutes les langues. Apéro sympathique avec une bonne bière à température parfaite, et un verre de vin 🍷 rouge très bon. La salade arrive très tôt, et est très bonne. Les plats suivent assez rapidement et on s’est régalé. L’accueil est sincère et le personnel est soit souriant, soit un petit mot gentil : c’est parfait ! Un très bon moment.

The place is dog and kids friendly, so we were able to dine in while on the family trip. Highly recommend to anyone interested in good food or good beer in a lovey place :)

Ate there last night. Suckling pig with bread, €17.80: was well fried, sauce was very good. Side salad €7.50, nothing special for the price, light Maggi taste, but fresh. Cheese pätzle with side salad €17.90. Unfortunately not fresh spaetzle, but a finished product. The taste is therefore correspondingly disappointing. The prices for other dishes tend to be higher. The atmosphere is nice because it seems to be common to throw guests together. This creates nice conversations if you want. The waitress seemed stressed because every seat was taken. With the many students in the city, a service assistant would certainly be grateful for a job and the guest would not feel like he is being served on the side. Overall, we can't quite share the exuberant praise. Price-performance is already generous. Money is made...

Wir wollten in Freiburg die lokale Küche geniessen und gleichzeitig saisonal speisen. Hier kamen wir voll auf die Rechnung: Spargel, Flammkuchen, badischer Wurstsalat etc., alles da, lecker und bezahlbar. Flinker, freundlicher Kellner und gute Atmosphäre.

Aside from the great atmosphere and the super kind managers, at Zum Kranz we had the best schnitzel we ever ate. If you take into consideration that we are willing to travel almost 200 KMS from our home town in the Netherlands to Germany to enjoy a real good schnitzel, you will know that we won’t say this lightly. In future we will gladly travel over 700 KMS to have dinner at Cafe Kranz (and meanwhile enjoy the beautiful city of Freiburg am Breisgau ;)). We can wholeheartedly recommend it!

First of all, first of all. The food was excellent, but unfortunately the only waiter in the restaurant was an imposition. He reprimands every customer. If you don't say what you want quickly enough, you get a stupid comment and it really ruined the evening for me and my family. I would like to point out here that I have never been lectured about not saying thank you and please. It's a shame, we now have very bad memories of the evening. For us, going out to eat doesn't just mean eating but also enjoying the ambience and service - otherwise I'd rather cook myself so I don't have to worry. Very sad for the team too. That evening we noticed that he had also gotten into a fight with his colleague, who reprimanded him quite loudly. Unfortunately we missed that; We didn't want to start a fight - but in hindsight that would probably have been better. Dear Kranz team. We know that it is not easy to find good staff in times like these. However, we are of the opinion that no matter how good a chef is, he can cook and give his best - but if the service is no good, it's all for nothing. Unfortunately and sorry for the bad review.

We went to this restaurant two days in a row. There's a waiter who runs the place and didn't write down an order...it was impressive because he didn't forget anything. He definitely didn't miss his job and he also has a cheeky and personable nature about him 😄 Maybe we had to wait a little longer for one or two things, but you should take your time and enjoy going out to eat. The tables are filled with guests, which means that you end up sitting at the same table with strangers. I think this concept is great because it contributes to sociability and is simply efficient. The food was super tasty and fresh. We felt very comfortable and would come back!!

The Baden food here is extremely tasty and the portions are generous! Even small requests for changes are taken into account. The pretty bartender and the amusing waiter are absolute professionals in their business and manage the entire interior on their own, respect! Ambiance is traditional, but good.
