Zum Kranz in Freiburg im Breisgau

Last Monday around 5:30 PM, we asked if there was room for the four of us! We were shown the door because we were 5 minutes early. We then waited outside for the next attempt. Once inside, a woman with her head in a thunderstorm and the air of a bankrupt undertaker barked at us. "Reserved!" she barked, "Reserved!!!!" To which we replied, "No..." (Response) "NO PLACE!" Too bad :(

The owner is lovely, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is family-friendly. They speak Spanish. Overall, a highly recommended place.

Centrally located, rustic, and cozy. The pork knuckle and Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli) are absolutely delicious.

I was absolutely surprised the first time, the second time it was still good, and today, on my third visit, it was excellent again. Everything is just perfect for me: good Baden cuisine, friendly service, and everything is very quick. I'm already looking forward to my fourth visit.

Terrible service. We had reserved a table for two, but ended up sitting next to four other people who arrived after us but were seated better. At these prices, it would be nice to at least be able to have a conversation while eating. The staff, including the owner, seemed completely overwhelmed and were incredibly unfriendly. Definitely not recommended.

We were informed on-site that card payments are not accepted under any circumstances, regardless of the amount. This information contradicted the payment information displayed on Google at the time of our visit, which indicated that card payments were possible for amounts of €20 or more. Based on this information, we did not continue our visit.

The food is good, homemade, and the service from the waitress was excellent. We would definitely return.

We dined at Kranz this evening with a group of eight. The service was excellent, friendly, and professional, and the food was delicious. We all highly recommend it. I'd like to add a comment about the service to my review. We were impressed by the waiter's performance—or rather, the waitress's service professional or head waiter. Taking drink and food orders from eight people and then correctly assigning them to each order—that's a rare sight these days. And on top of that, he had a great sense of humor. Fantastic! Thank you.

We came here on a recommendation and everything we were told was true. We were thrilled. The atmosphere was incredibly cozy. Despite the restaurant being full, the service was super friendly and attentive.

Today was our first, and certainly not our last, visit to "Zum Kranz": regional, traditional, and very tasty cuisine, friendly and professional service, an attentive and likeable young man behind the bar, and good value for money. Rustic restaurant, the service was a bit grumpy, but not unfriendly.

An absolute insider tip in Freiburg! The beef fillet was melt-in-your-mouth tender, cooked to perfection, truly divine – you rarely find it so juicy and flavorful. The side salad was crisp and fresh, with a superb dressing that you could have happily eaten by the spoonful. And the service was simply heartwarming: incredibly attentive, unbelievably friendly, and with just the right amount of Baden hospitality. You feel like you're among good friends. We'll definitely be back – thank you to the entire team at Gasthaus zum Kranz!

The sauerbraten and cordon bleu were really delicious, and the Ganter beer was a real revelation after six weeks in Italy and France. Friendly and efficient service. Very dog-friendly!

One of the best restaurants in Freiburg's old town! Always happy to come back

We were unlucky, I guess. The place was overcrowded, the kitchen overwhelmed, and our expectations of quality were not met. The legendary Baden Schäufele turned out to be two slices of cured pork neck, a lump of pure sauerkraut, and a slab of mushy mashed potatoes from a packet. It wasn't worth €25 and an hour's wait.

Very good service, delicious food

One of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in. If you're addicted to salad, you can assume that everything on the menu is excellent. And that's the case here; the salad is world-class, as is everything else in this very nicely run restaurant.

The best veal schnitzel! We made a reservation the day before so we could enjoy this delicious schnitzel. The schnitzel and salad were made with love, and the service was very friendly. If we ever visit Freiburg again, we'll definitely be back!

A very traditional inn – you share a seat at one of the large tables with other guests and enjoy regional dishes. It's quite noisy, so not ideal for a cozy evening.

A quaint restaurant, the kind you unfortunately don't find very often these days. We were lucky enough to get a seat without a reservation. Dogs are also welcome here. The food was delicious, highly recommended!

We went to the Zum Kranz restaurant with our family and had an excellent meal. The dishes were fresh, lovingly prepared, and delicious. The service was very warm and attentive, and Michael is a passionate host – you immediately feel welcome. A thoroughly enjoyable evening – we'd love to come back!

A wonderful restaurant with regional Baden cuisine. Due to the restaurant's size and popularity, reservations are essential. We received a very friendly welcome. Great service, excellent food.

In August, we had dinner here, eager to try the local cuisine. We ordered the typical breaded steak and dessert, but the experience was quite frustrating: we had to wait an hour for the dish to arrive. During that time, we saw how people who had arrived after us were served ahead of us, and the same dish we had ordered. After several warnings that we were waiting, they brought us a salad and dessert before the steak! It was as if they'd forgotten our order and were trying to use these dishes to deter us from leaving, as we were already getting ready to leave and pay only for our drinks. Finally, the dish arrived almost at 10 p.m., even though we had arrived and ordered before 9 p.m. The food wasn't bad, but the service left a lot to be desired.

We're currently on vacation in Freiburg and this place was recommended to us. It's the kind of pub where you walk in, take a quick look around, and immediately know that no matter what you order, it's going to taste really good. And that's exactly what it was. There are only a few tables, and we were very lucky to get one. Thanks to the waitress there 🙏 The portions are very generous. The prices are totally reasonable. Everyone of us loved the food. We'll be back.

We waited for over an hour. The owner apologized several times, but we were given nothing to eat or snack while we waited, and we received no commercial gesture.

Six of us came here spontaneously, and a table was set up for us. Despite the full house, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent, and the portions were really generous! We felt very comfortable and will definitely be back. Highly recommended :)

If you prefer professionally prepared food to tourist fare, this is the place for you. I haven't had such good roulades with red cabbage since my grandmother's time. The slightly higher price was worth it. The service is prompt and friendly. The restaurant is located in an old building and feels authentic and unpretentious. A touch more folklore could have been added.

Very good food with a focus on Baden cuisine. A very tasty beef schnitzel with cranberries (among other dishes). Also worth mentioning: the Roman snails as an appetizer – definitely keep them on the menu! Unfortunately, we had to wait a bit for the drinks at the beginning. But that didn't spoil the experience at all. Nice atmosphere, even outside when the weather is nice. We'd gladly go back.

A very, very cozy, elegant restaurant where the owner likes to seat guests together at the wooden tables. The food was sooo delicious, and the Müller-Thurgau was very drinkable! All in all: delicious and highly recommended! We would gladly come back, if we weren't on a day trip! The duo rechte Ecke from Mannheim!!!

The Kranz is still a true Baden inn, where you can enjoy very decent Baden (and Swabian Bavarian ;-)) cuisine. The proprietor is friendly and uncomplicated, and hasn't let the tourist influx get in the way. We, even from Freiburg, enjoy coming here for dishes like lentils with spaetzle or Maultaschen (ravioli). The atmosphere is rustic and cozy, with large tables where other guests are occasionally seated. In summer, you can also sit outside by the stream.

Great food and very friendly owner, perfect for a Spanish tourist.

The price of the dishes wasn't excessive, especially considering they came in a good amount. They brought us a salad we didn't order and didn't charge us for it. We concluded they served it to everyone (since almost every table had it), but we didn't dare ask. The waitress answered our questions about Freiburg: the tap water is drinkable and the city is quite safe at night (something that worried us a bit when we returned to the hotel). The only real negative was that the 0.75L bottle of water costs €7.90. We thought it was a bit excessive, although we're not sure if it's because of the restaurant or something common in Freiburg. We're from Spain, I work in a pizzeria, and a 1.5L bottle of water costs €3. I don't know if it was bad luck or culture shock.

First of all, make a reservation! This place fills up quick and once it does, that's it. The service is friendly enough once you're seated and they took our order quickly. We shared a table with a couple of other groups due to the limited seating, which was kind of nice because you feel like part of the community. I decided to try the cordon bleu because it featured heavily on the menu and my date opted for the Dreierlei, which is kind of an eclectic mix of shredded meat, onions, and a sweet-ish sauce. I tried a bite and it was decent -- something to try one time while you're in the region but not something I'd order on the regular. My cordon bleu was also tasty but I'd probably go for the normal schnitzel next time. We enjoyed our meals while listening to the local German chatter, occasionally hearing other languages from the tourists who also found this spot. Overall we were happy with the meal but will need to try some other dishes to really get the full experience. Hope to see you there!

We spontaneously discovered this place last week. Its cozy, rustic atmosphere, attentive hosts, and a wonderful, authentic waiter, reminiscent of a well-organized Cologne waiter. Delicious food, cold beers on tap—what more could you want? We'll be back next time!

The two of us were there on a Sunday evening; all the tables were taken—so it's best to make a reservation in advance! We opted for the bar, and the waiters were very friendly and fun to be with ;) The food was good, as expected; the portion of schnitzel was decent and tasty. Definitely recommended for a cozy evening.

We were there as part of a larger group. The service was very friendly, but our food arrived about 40 minutes apart from the first dish. On top of that, we couldn't pay by card. Unfortunately, the food wasn't particularly tasty, but it was quite expensive.

We managed to get a nice table in the outdoor beer garden twice at short notice and enjoyed a delicious meal. When we're back in Freiburg, we'll definitely come back. The staff is super nice and friendly, and drinks are brought to our tables quickly (if needed).

Everything was great. The first time, we got a late-night meal, while everyone else had already closed the kitchen. On our second visit, the chef personally made sure we got a table outside without a reservation on Saturday evening. Best wishes from the Allgäu region.

A lovely, rustic inn. There's indoor and outdoor seating. The food was delicious and the portion sizes were decent, except for the schnitzel. This could have been a bit larger. The staff was very attentive and friendly during our visit. The price was absolutely reasonable for the quality. We would return and recommend it.

All in all, it was okay, but nothing more. The rump steak was well done even though it was ordered medium rare. The response to the complaint was that they were just busy... Service wasn't particularly friendly, more like being ripped off. We also waited quite a long time.

We had dinner at the Kranz. A quaint restaurant with outstanding staff. Waiter Mirko and the team handled the crowds and provided highly professional and friendly service. We found the dishes we ordered to be excellent. We'd be happy to return!

Rude would be an understatement! We reserved a table for two and were later informed that there were only communal tables. Despite having a free table for four, there was no compromise, so we looked for another restaurant with better service.
