A lovely little restaurant – not yet Michelin-starred – but the food is just as delicious and prepared with love and attention to detail as in the two neighboring Michelin-starred restaurants (Wolfshöle and Jacobi). Friendly staff. We've been there several times now and it's always fantastic! Sitting outside in the summer is also lovely. I love the food and the team around Amadeus Kura – thank you for the wonderful evenings.

We visited Löwengrube in Freiburg im Breisgau today based on Google reviews. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The food was incredibly creative and Michelin-star quality, and the service was very friendly and extremely competent. The wine list was extensive and of high quality. The value for money was absolutely perfect. We will definitely be back. andipasta

The service was truly outstanding. You get the feeling that the two ladies who served us that evening created everything themselves—they presented each course with such attention to detail. And yet, they were so relaxed and friendly; five stars aren't enough. The dining room itself is just okay, but the service and food more than make up for it. Ah, right, the food :) Everything was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. We (a group of five) ordered different dishes (vegetarian, fish, and meat). Everyone was very satisfied. The recommended wines were a perfect match, and all at a reasonable price. You rarely find that combination.

We had the five-course menu... wonderful flavor combinations without being overly elaborate; every ingredient was recognizable and exceptionally delicious. The value for money was unbeatable! The service from the young staff was absolutely wonderful and attentive, the dining room small, but just large enough that we could still have a good conversation without overhearing the undoubtedly interesting conversations of the other guests. We were spontaneously looking for a good meal during the week and stopped by here. Very friendly service (from start to finish) showed us to a table. The menu is well-curated and offers something for every palate. Our dishes were consistently delicious! Overall, it was a very well-rounded evening that I would happily recommend. Very, very good food, incredibly friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere in the heart of Freiburg's old town.

This will be a difficult review because, on a first visit on August 18, 2025, three people couldn't reach an agreement between all the people served. The starters chosen were tomato ricotta, salmon trout peach, and roast beef cucumber. The main courses were redfish spelt, veal loin eggplant, and gnocchi zucchini. For dessert, we had three mango coconut dishes. The salmon trout and roast beef starters were considered a bit too tart and at times too acidic. The only flavor explosion was unanimously felt to be the tomato ricotta. All three main courses (everyone tried a portion of each) were just under 4 stars for me, but my companions rated them as lacking in flavor. We all agreed that the main courses would have preferred a bit more refinement. The aperitifs continued the predominantly tart flavor of the starters. The wines we chose by the glass, Pinot Gris from Wagner and Rioja, were very well-suited to our tastes. I would have expected a welcome from the kitchen (other restaurants in the same price range in Freiburg, whose names begin with D or E, can do this) as well as free(!) bread. We really enjoyed the service and ambiance – we were able to sit outside in the shade in pleasant temperatures. In my opinion, the menu lacked a vegetarian option equivalent to the meat/fish-based 5-course menu. We were struck by the high rate of returning guests. We observed some very warm greetings. Perhaps we were simply unlucky with the menu offered and our personal tastes that day. The lack of a welcome from the kitchen costs the otherwise excellent service one star; it's the only way I can still give the food 4 stars. Will we come back? Here, too, the three of us weren't entirely sure... Personally, however, I've decided to try a 5-course menu with wine pairing sometime soon.

Food: We found it clever, but partly lacking in flavor. The tomatoes for the starter were simply tomatoes - the gnocci were also very simply dressed. The octopus with the potatoes was also quite plain in flavor. There's still a lot of room for improvement. Drinks: Our white wine had to be chilled first (why aren't white wines always chilled?), and after a good hour, we were able to drink it – still too warm. Service: Very nice, great explanations about the food, but too few, so we had to get the wine ourselves from the cooler if we wanted something. Price: OK in itself - comparable to the price of Michelin-starred restaurants, but if you're aiming for a Michelin star, more work should be done on the food.

Unfortunately, a significant point deduction in the B-grade: after a multi-course meal for four, we were thrown out on Friday evening at 10:20 PM! The Löwengrube restaurant is beautifully situated in Freiburg's old town on the picturesque, vine-covered Konviktstraße, an old craftsman's alley. This wasn't our first visit to the Löwengrube; this time, four of us were there for dinner. The Löwengrube is located in a historic building and estate. It used to be a Baden winegrower's tavern – Engler's Weinkrügle, and an old wine barrel from that era hangs on the wall in the doorway. Now, the old rooms are still evident, but with a fittingly atmospheric and pleasantly modern design. You feel truly at home in the here and now, yet at the same time immersed in old Freiburg. The courtyard is also a wonderful place to sit in the summer, and we were lucky enough to be there this time. The Löwengrube has a modern, very contemporary concept. This is immediately apparent in the service, which is motivated, relaxed, and very approachable, yet also very competent and professional. Highly qualified answers to all questions are provided, and conversations about the food are a pleasure, as is the excellent advice on the wines. It's a real pleasure to be a guest here. Owner and chef Amadeus Kura and his team do a fantastic job. The food is modern, with sophisticated flavors, based on regional products, and has an Asian and Oriental influence. Everything fits together perfectly, tastes excellent, is light, contemporary, and a lot of fun. We were lucky enough to be guests at the end of the asparagus season. For starters, we had asparagus | miso | sunflower seeds. The white asparagus was lightly grilled and perfectly al dente, the miso cream/hollandaise with plenty of umami and the sunflower seeds complemented a crunchy, nutty flavor, a real hit. This was accompanied by focaccia from Brotbruder, the highly acclaimed and iconic Freiburg baker from the Wiehre district. For main courses, we had entrecôte lid | dal | green beans | The beef, 'nduja, was cooked to perfection, the dal turned out to be a sophisticated lentil puree, and the roasted Italian 'nduja sausage served as a spicy ingredient. All together, it was very aromatic and extremely well-executed. The Arctic char with warm (!) couscous and yuzu was also very good, a light, aromatic, and very harmonious dish. For dessert, we had strawberry | elderflower | yogurt, a fresh, fruity, light, seasonal dessert that perfectly rounded off our meal. All in all, a wonderful and very successful dinner. The Lion's Den is quite rightly recommended by the Michelin Guide. The prices are absolutely reasonable. We're already looking forward to our next visit!

An excellent restaurant, both for the quality of the food and for the warm and professional service. The flavors are original and refined: from miso-studded asparagus to a rib-eye steak served with dal purée and beans mixed with 'nduja, each dish is a pleasant surprise. A pure culinary delight!

We visited almost all of the star restaurants on Sylt. And a few more in our republic. Nowhere else has a chef met our tastes (and portion sizes) as well as here. We told him that we also “whistled back” before he left work. He looked incredulous... two red-faced people (from the Freiburg March Sun) in sweatshirts... Except for the stairs to the toilets downstairs (which only those with special needs notice) everything was simply perfect!

The Löwengrube impresses with high-quality food, excellent service and a stylish, cozy ambience. The dishes are prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients and have an excellent taste. I visited on a slow rainy winter night. The food, the care, the wine, they couldn’t have been better! Jacquelyn was accommodating and created a wine tasting experience for me of local and regional wines and spent time sharing the regions, her tasting notes etc. I know during busier times you may not get to have the same experience but you will enjoy it immensely! Very good food in a restaurant with nice staff. There is a point deduction because the bread costs €3 extra. With a menu price of €105, this should be included. An amuse bouche greeting from the kitchen would also have been nice.

Nach wie vor präsentiert Amadeus Kura mit seinem Team ein 5 Gang Menü für Genießer! Auch die Zeitspanne für das Servieren der einzelnen Gänge war genau richtig. Ein nettes Team hat uns durch den Abend begleitet, wir waren sehr zufrieden.

We are thrilled! Yesterday we had the pleasure of having dinner at the Lion's Den for the first time and it was an experience that left us speechless. As soon as we entered the restaurant we received a warm and professional welcome, and the expert advice on every dish and wine made the evening special. The ambience is stylish and tastefully furnished, and the staff is friendly and courteous. The team was also flexible and accommodating when it came to special requests. The food itself is a true art - not only a visual pleasure, but also a taste experience that overwhelmed us both. Every dish was exceptionally delicious, and even seemingly simple dishes were interpreted in surprising and delicious ways with original combinations. The lion's den is worth every cent! We will definitely come back! A truly perfect evening!

Nach mehrfachen Besuchen stellen wir fest, dass sich die Löwengrube durch qualitative Konstanz in Freiburg fest etabliert hat. Das abendliche Angebot umfasst sehr kreative à-la-carte-Gerichte und ein wohl abgestimmtes 5-Gang Menü. Die Weinkarte passt genau zum Restaurant und wird von dem aufgeweckten Sommelier prima erklärt. Der Service ist fröhlich-engagiert. Der Innenraum ist deutlich einladender als er von aussen erscheint. Ein paar schattige Aussenplätze sind vorhanden. Die optimale Lage macht das Restaurant auch mittags zu einem beliebten Anlaufpunkt.

Nice food, premium location a bit costly three entries and one appetizer and one drink come to €160.

Leider entsprach das aktuelle Menu keinerlei gehobener Küche. Das Essen war teils ohne Geschmack. Zwischengerichte wie z.B. "Tomaten mit Ricottaschaum" waren langweilig. Das Hauptgericht "Rinderrücken" war begleitet von einer Sosse die man als solche nicht wahrnehmen konnte. Für einen Preis von knapp 100€ pro Person ohne Weinbegleitung war das Essen für die gebotene Qualität und den Geschmack sowohl überteuert als auch unzumutbar. Einzig das Dessert konnte punkten. Insgesamt leider so nicht weiterzuempfehlen !

Zum ersten mal waren wir hier mit unseren Lieblingsmenschen zum Hochzeits Lunch und haben dort eine wundervolle, unvergessliche Zeit verbracht. Heute wollten wir uns einfach nochmal daran erinnern und es war wieder genau so gut und schön! Das Ambiente, der so herzliche und unglaublich gute Service haben uns sofort wieder begeistert. Wer braucht schon Michelin-Sterne. Die Empfehlung ist völlig ausreichend und jeden Besuch wert. Aufmerksames und sehr kundiges Personal erklärt jeden Gang und ist auch sonst sehr freundlich. Wir hatten einen tollen Abend und sensationelle Speisen. Dorade-Ceviche, dann Spargel mit einer Hollandaise, wie man es als Vorspeise nicht besser machen kann. Auch Hauptgang (Saibling) und Nachspeise waren jeweils alleine einen Besuch wert. Sehr schön, wenn man sich in Freiburg etwas gönnen will.

I'm 8 months old and I had dinner there with my parents today. I'm excited. For me I had bread with the best olive oil as a starter. Afterwards I was allowed to spoon on veal sweetbreads, celery and sweet potato puree. I can only give the food top marks. The service was almost magical. As soon as I grabbed Mom's fork and threw it on the floor, a new fork appeared on the table as if by magic. Thank you very much for allowing me, as a gourmet of tomorrow, to eat with you today. And everything mom and dad ate was great too.

We went there for lunch. It was fine but not that good. We ordered mushrooms as starter (18€) and fishcurry (17€)for main course. The portion is a bit small. The taste is a bit salty

I received a very friendly welcome. I got a seat without a reservation. At first I only wanted to order two starters and a main course - but then I decided on the 5-course menu with wine accompaniment. Harmonious, round, deliciously tasty and delicately seasoned. Wine went well. Super attentive service.. two super accommodating people took care of my physical well-being today. Both complement each other seamlessly. Both served and also presented courses and wine. Simply top class. All in all!!! THANKS! Gene again anytime!!!

Google doesn't offer steps in the ratings, but 4.7 is about right. Food was excellent: flavorful with unexpected twists; portions about right; and well plated. 5 stars. Service was pleasant and attentive, but missed a few beats in terms of water refills, table cleaning (a spot of pumpkin puree was left on the table from the main course to the end); napkin refolding when a patron goes to the loo; etc. It's those small details that can distinguish a restaurant. 4 stars. Atmosphere was intimate, a blend of old and new. Very nice. 5 stars.

Für die Ambitionen und den Preis bietet die Löwengrube leider zu wenig. Das Essen war recht gut, aber leider keineswegs etwas Besonderes. Kein Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Der Herr im Service war fast schon unfreundlich und hat uns ein wenig den Abend verdorben. Dass sich das Team auf eine Nahrungsmittelallergie, trotz vorheriger Ankündigung, in keiner Weise eingestellt hat, ist einfach nur unverständlich und überheblich.

Wir waren überrascht, was das Team aus dem ehemals "verstaubten", gewollt rustikalen Lokal gemacht haben: modernes Ambiente eher minimalistisch aber nicht steril sonder gemütlich. Der Service hats nicht schwer, die sehr kleine, sehr feine Karte zu erklären. Man muss damit rechnen, auch mal hungrig zu gehen, wenn's nichts gibt was konveniert. 3 Hauptgerichte waren schön vegetarisch, Fisch, Fleisch. Ein aufsteigender gastronomischer Stern im Herzen von Freiburg! Wir waren zum Abendessen in der Löwengrube und haben drei Gänge a la carte gegessen und waren von der ebenso kreativen Zusammenstellung der Zutaten und geschmacklichen Komponenten, wie auch deren Zubereitung und ästhetischen Präsentation auf dem Teller sehr angetan. Das ist unserer Einschätzung nach schon im Bereich eines Michelin-Sterns - andere besternte Häuser in Freiburg lassen im Vergleich Finesse und Kreativität auf diesem Niveau vermissen. Dazu kommt eine sehr ansprechende Weinkarte, die offensichtlich von jemandem mit Freude am Wein und gutem Geschmack zusammengestellt wurde. Das geht los mit einer tollen Auswahl an Schaumweinen und insbesondere Champagne, wobei letztere eben nicht nur die bekannten Namen der großen Häuser beinhalten, sondern auch kleinere individueller Erzeuger wie z.B. Tarlant, Jacquesson oder Marguet um nur ein paar Beispele zu nennen! Neben einer guten Auswahl an hervorragenden deutschen Weingütern sind ferner auch gute Weine aus dem Burgund zu finden. Eine abschließende Beschreibung der Weinkarte ist hier nicht möglich, aber es sollten auch anspruchsvolle Gaumen fündig werden. Zumal die Weine fair kalkuliert sind. Den Weinfreund wird es auch freuen, dass man der Qualität der Weine entsprechende Weingläser vorfindet. Auch der Service lässt nichts zu wünschen übrig - freundlich und professionell, ohne distanziert zu wirken. Schön auch, dass die Gerichte beim Servieren angesagt wurden. Einziger Ansatzpunkt zur Verbesserung auf dem Weg zum Michelin* wäre das Geschirr: wir haben alle drei Gänge auf den gleichen weißen Tellern serviert bekommen. Diese sind absolut in Ordnung, aber mit etwas individuelleren und feinerem Geschirr könnte man noch etwas mehr *-Flair erzeugen. Die Räumlichkeiten selbst bieten atmosphärisch eine gute Mischung aus holzbetäfelter Gemütlichkeit und behutsamer Modernisierung in Form der hellgrauen Wände, die in "Spachteltechnik" ausgeführt sind. Das passt so! Alles in allem hatten wir einen sehr schönen Abend mit einem Menu, dass von der Vorspeise über das Hauptgericht bis zum Dessert auf einem gleichbleibend tollen Niveau war! Hier kochen Profis mit Leidenschaft, was der Blick in die offene Küche bestätigt. Dafür sind die aufgerufenen Preis absolut fair. Wir kommen wieder.

Kleine Karte, kleine Portionen. Und nur Fisch, Fisch und nochmals Fisch. Sehr hohe Preise. Sehr große Weinkarte aber nichts zum Essen. Wir sind hungrig gegangen und haben eine Waffel auf dem Marktplatz gegessen

Exzellente Küche im Herzen von Freiburg! Über den Mittag gibt es eine kleine aber feine Auswahl an Köstlichkeiten. Genau das richtige Angebot für eine ausgedehnte Mittagspause in der Altstadt. Absolut empfehlenswert! Essen und Service einsame Spitze und mit absolut angemessen Preis/Leistungsverhältnis! Kommen sehr gerne wieder und sind gespannt was es für neue tolle Sachen auf der Karte gibt.

Wir haben uns für das 5 Gänge Menü inklusive der Weinbegleitung entschieden - tolle Zusammenstellung der Gerichte, sehr interessante Weinauswahl und sehr freundliches Personal - wir haben den Abend mehr als genossen. Wenn wir mal wieder auf Durchreise sind , werden wir diese kulinarische Reise wiederholen

Ein Restaurant für einen besonderen Abend! Wir hatten einen sehr tollen Abend in der Löwengrube. Das 5 Gänge-Menü war ein Genuss und der Service war sehr zuvorkommend. Wir kommen gerne wieder!

Food very good. The kitchen has still a lot to improve in terms of timing and organisation. It is impossible to wait for 25 minutes a cheese plate to share, see other guests ordering later and receiving food before. Please also improve the level of waiters’ service and attention to details. Still a long way.
