Great taste experience and very friendly service, would definitely go back!!!

Very tasty and fresh food! We had chicken and lamb. Both dishes were very refined and seasoned with typical Indian spices. The meat was tender! We will definitely come back and try the rest of the menu!

I've been coming here for years and enjoy the excellent vegetarian thalis. The prices are fair, and the service is always friendly. The outdoor seating in Freiburg's beautiful old town also creates a special ambiance.

Tasted ok, main course was relatively small. So did eat something else elsewhere afterwards. Did only accept cash at the moment I was there.

I ordered a meal for pickup and specifically chose the pickup option. According to the confirmation, it was supposed to be ready at a certain time, but I had to wait over 40 minutes longer. When I politely pointed this out, the employee treated me rudely and disrespectfully. His response was simply, "It just takes time." No apology, no friendliness—absolutely unprofessional. That's not how you treat customers. I definitely won't order from there again.

They did not take credit card and did not make it clear on the menu that it was cash only. I said I did not want an appetizer that was deep-fried and they brought out something that did seem fried even though it was tasty I had a chicken dish with rice. It was so so, and the ice cream was advertised as coming with mango and you got a couple of squirts of like a mango syrupy sauce on it. Service was incredibly slow and they seem to have added 19% tax, which is normally always included in Germany. I certainly will not go back and I caution you about going there to begin with.

Pathetic staff. Very cold behavior from the staff. We went there and asked the employee if they had room for three people. He just said to wait and went inside and never came back to us. In the meantime, he offered a 4-seater table to a single person who came after us. He also gave her the menu and didn't even turn around to inform us about the waiting time, even though several tables were free. The other person was also a walk-in and not a reservation. We finally went to another Indian restaurant where we were wholeheartedly welcomed.

Kitchen open until 2:30 p.m. Unfortunately, we couldn't even get a drink by 2:00 p.m.

Well, I've been there three times in a few years and I have to say I really can't recommend it. In terms of taste, I find the food to be on the lower to mid-range at best; you can eat it but it really wasn't anything special. I had lamb and it tasted so-so and the sauce was very salty and seemed like ready-made sauce. There are Indian restaurants in Freiburg that have a very spicy and fresh sauce but it really wasn't good. What always strikes me is the friendliness; pretty much everyone seems listless and fake friendly, and when they leave, the smile disappears immediately. I don't think any of them are really into their jobs. Friendliness is the be-all and end-all and should definitely be a top priority, but I've never once felt welcome there. The fact that you can't pay by card is of course completely out of date and I expect they will try to trick you accordingly. The street is beautiful and so is the outside area. The interior looks great too, but the downstairs toilet smelled pretty bad, and it wasn't like anyone was using it. Definitely the worst Indian restaurant I've ever been to. I wouldn't recommend it!

Very very tasty food ;) can only recommend

Unfortunately, I can't recommend it 😿 😢 I really like Indian cuisine. But today I ordered a Malai Kofta from the vegetarian menu and instead got a sweet dessert (milky white with semolina balls). It actually tasted OK, but I'm not allowed to eat anything sweet for health reasons, so I swapped my dish with my boyfriend... Unfortunately, the side vegetables in his dish were mushy and tasted almost like frying oil. Unfortunately, the service - initially friendly - wasn't very hospitable when I asked him about it. He denied that Malai Kofta was a savory dish and then just walked away. What could be improved: Next time, be more considerate of the guest, for example, buy a drink in such a case. Or show sympathy, as is common in restaurants, and maybe even offer an alternative dish. And stop by every now and then to ask if everything is okay. I was very sad afterwards because I was actually really looking forward to the meal.

A very good Indian restaurant in the heart of Freiburg. It's a lovely place to sit outside in the summer. A breezy and shady alleyway in the midday heat. Highly recommended: Hereali Kebab!

This was our first time here. The food and drinks were delicious, and the service was very friendly! I also think the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend it :-)

Unfortunately, a complete disappointment! The food was unfortunately very poorly prepared and not served as ordered. The draft beer tasted stale, etc. Furthermore, our voucher was not honored, for whatever reason!? Practical and not recommended

The ambiance outside was lovely, and it was no less cozy inside. Our glasses were unfortunately dirty, as was the appetizer plate, even with dried-on food residue. What a shame. The "surprise appetizer" tasted okay, the decorative salad was rather inappropriate and unloving, and the beer-battered vegetables were fried for too long, making them dry and too dark for our taste. The wine served wasn't the one we ordered. The main courses were good, just lukewarm...but perhaps that's the way they're served. The mango lassi was delicious, and the prices were reasonable.

Trotz der sehr unterschiedlichen Bewertungen haben wir einen Besuch hier gewagt und wurden nicht enttäuscht. Ein sehr buttriges, aber fein gewürztes Butter Chicken, ausgezeichnetes Naan-Brot, feiner Reis. Alles in ausreichenden Portionen. Wir haben das Essen genossen, ebenso wie die ruhige Atmosphäre. Allerdings scheinen die Besitzer bei der Vergabe ihrer Gastfreundschaft sehr eigenwillig vorzugehen. Wir hatten Glück, andere an diesem Abend wohl weniger. Den Toiletten würde eine kleine Auffrischung gut tun.

We ordered two dishes and a 0.5l Mezzo Mix via Lieferando. The “Mezzo Mix” was delivered mixed from cola in the rotten old Volvic bottle (see photos) because there were no longer any closed bottles in stock. At least that's what they explained to us on the phone. The brown liquid in the bottle was non-carbonated and didn't contain 0.5l and apart from that it's just very disgusting in my opinion as a matter of principle. Of course we didn't drink any of it. Cost: €3.50 - refund refused. You can come by and get a drink there. The food was bland, lukewarm and only had a sauce that didn't belong with either dish. I have never had such bad and boring Indian food. Addition April 28, 2025: At this point I would like to thank Google for reactivating the review after it was briefly removed and reviewed due to the restaurant's defamation complaint. Since, in my opinion, Google reviews are not only intended for positive reviews, I am pleased that my pictures and impressions of my experience there are now visible again.

Everything freshly prepared and super delicious! Tandoori Chicken, highly recommended!

Very good food, tasteful and of good quality. What's just unpleasant is that the portion of rice for two people is unreasonably small and costs another €3. The fact that although card payment is shown as an option at the entrance, payment can only be made in cash is more than strange. In this respect we will not visit this restaurant again.

It was really tasty. Best Indian Restaurant. We had homemade cream cheese with spinach and a 24-hour pickled chicken which was grilled in the lemon oven. We really recommend this Indian to everyone. Go by and try it out. Dishes cost around €12.

Mango lassi tingled on the tongue, it was probably no longer completely fresh... When I asked, it was probably just a little sugar that was missing, so I received the same drink with just more sugar. Rice was dry and the quantity was far too small, so we had to reorder twice (there were two of us) and of course pay the extra charge twice. Lamb and chicken dishes were well seasoned, but rather weak compared to the competition... Will not come again due to the better offer in other Indian restaurants.

Leider das schlechteste indische Restaurant, das ich je besucht habe. Das Ambiente ist ziemlich nüchtern, still, helle Lichter- über das IPad des Gastgebers war leise indische Musik zu vernehmen. Der Service war durchschnittlich. Das Essen fand ich sehr unauthentisch - mir haben die indischen Gewürze gefehlt. Ich habe 3 verschiedene Sorten bestellt- nur eine war würzig- die anderen waren einfach in Sahne geköchelt und das Fleisch war zäh.

Unfortunately the worst Indian restaurant I have ever visited. The ambience is quite sober, quiet, bright lights - Indian music could be heard quietly on the host's iPad. The service was average. I found the food very inauthentic - I missed the Indian spices. I ordered 3 different types - only one was spicy - the others were simply simmered in cream and the meat was tough.

Bestes indisches Restaurant in Freiburg! Es hat wie in unserem Urlaub in Indien geschmeckt. Wirklich sehr authentisch, was sonst bisher kein indisches Restaurant in Freiburg geschafft hat. Wir hatten Pakora zur Vorspeise. Chicken Byriani und Chicken Tikka Masala zum Hauptgang mit fantastischen Garlic-Naan. Das traditionelle Gulab Jamu als Nachspeise. Wir sind pappsatt und glücklich nach Hause gegangen. Ich kann die vorherigen Kommentare leider in keinster Weise verstehen, denn wir waren rundum happy und begeistert! Wir kommen sehr gerne wieder.

As I sat down at my table, the service from the gentleman was disengaging. I could tell that he only wanted to talk as required. The samosas were bland and the garlic naan as well. The chana masala was good, I have to say that. When I was told how much it was, the guy pointed to a number. He did not print a receipt and made me pay cash, as I saw a table of two pay with a card. My order was not enough for him to pay the fee and wanted to do it under the table. I will not go back and have had WAY better food elsewhere.

The taste of the food was okay, but unfortunately the quantity (rice) was not suitable for the hungry guest. Subsequent delivery of another small plate of rice costs €3 extra. Not all drinks are available. The waiter is attentive, but not particularly friendly. Payment is made in cash without an invoice. Overall, not so good and a reunion rather unlikely.

Four of us went there for dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was quite busy, but the food still came after a reasonable wait. We each had a starter (pakora and samosa), a tandoor dish, a thali and two curries as a main course. The food was incredibly delicious. We've already been to a few Indian restaurants in Freiburg and we've never had it taste as good as here. We finally found our restaurant! It was very flavorful and not too spicy. We can definitely recommend it and will come again.

Tiefkühlgemüse (wie so oft, obwohl es laut vorheriger Auskunft frisch sein sollte), Zucker statt leckeren indischen Gewürzen, mehlige Fertigsoße und kein Toilettenpapier auf dem Klo. Das konnte auch der freundliche Service leider nicht ausgleichen, der nette Kellner brachte mir unaufgefordert ein Alternativgericht, das ebenso furchtbar schmeckte. Ich war in sehr vielen indischen Restaurants und weiß, dass jedes seine eigene Gewürzmischung verwendet, es also unterschiedlich schmeckt. Wer frische, köstliche indische Küche schätzt, wird leider enttäuscht.

Food top, service flop. You can get very tasty Indian food at Mahatma-Gandhi in Freiburg. Unfortunately the service there is catastrophic. The gentleman in service was very unfriendly and you could tell from 10 meters away that he wasn't interested at all. We all have a bad day, but we've been there three times now and it's been the same every time we visit.

Very delicious food, courteous and friendly hotel staff. Probably the best Indian food I've tasted in Germany till now.

It would be great if they could work on cleanliness and presentation. The tissues had oil stains. The chutney served to us looked like it was the leftovers from another table.

I used to think it was just the best Indian food in Freiburg - but the more I try it throughout Germany, the more I'm convinced there's no one better! 1A quality, always freshly prepared (yes, it can take a while) but with incredible intensity. Could be an addiction to food. As a vegetarian, there are tons of great options! The owners are super attentive and nice - can only be recommended to everyone. Of course, everything tastes best on site - there's nothing like a fresh Garlic Naan!

We ate there for the first time yesterday. My butter chicken was really delicious! My 3 friends' food was also really good. We had to wait almost an hour for the food, which was perhaps the only negative point. But the rest worked out great for us!

One of the worst "Indian" meals I've ever endured. I ordered fish pakora and onion bhaji, two quite basic things. First, it took a long time, like 20-30 minutes when the resto was nearly empty. When it did arrive, only a meagre amount of coriander-yogurt sauce and no tamarind in the entire place. The fish was appallingly bland and the onions a nightware, thick slices of onion encased in a flavorless fried shell. No effort whatsoever even to separate the onions into separate "rings," just slabs of onion. I couldn't finish it. This repast with a bottle of sparkling water (the best part of the meal) was €15.50.

Super delicious authentic food!

Food very average, the samosas were very oily and the yogurt sauce had no taste. In the end we wanted to pay with the gourmet block, but we were shouted at that it wasn't possible and that we had to say so beforehand. The reaction of the man, apparently the owner of the restaurant, was very disrespectful and shocking!! You can't treat guests like that. That was our first and last visit.

It wasn't that good, unfortunately. Some of the food was canned (canned fruit in cashew sauce). Rice for four people was more like a single person's portion. We waited a very long time for everything (food and the bill) even though only two other tables were occupied. In the end, no card payment was possible with a total bill of over €100. Was very disappointing.

Had dinner there yesterday. Unfortunately we weren't given a particularly friendly welcome and were shown a place like dogs. We came across this restaurant through the gourmet block! When this was seen, the friendliness was completely over!! When we wanted to pay, we were told 30 euros, which in itself was completely fine, but we did NOT receive an invoice despite multiple requests! That wouldn't be possible with gourmet block... We briefly looked at the menu online at home and did the math... actually it would have only been 26.50! All in all not recommended!!! Unfriendly, lying and eating... well not our taste! We feel totally cheated because they refused to give us a bill and had to do the math and realize that they had taken their own tip. Given the friendliness and service, it's understandable not to hope for a voluntary tip! Never again!!

I would give the food and bread a 3-4, nothing special and pretty oily I had a gourmet block and when I wanted to pay I didn't even get an invoice and when I did the math I paid way too much... Well, if someone needs it so much. I'm definitely not going there anymore, I'd rather go to the Devil in Ehrenkirchen, it's always great there...

Two tough-looking Indian men serving fine-cooked Indian delights. Finally, it was the best gourmet experience in Freiburg city centre over the weekend.

We had dinner on New Year's Eve, and although we had booked by telephone we were not informed that there would be no a la carte menu.

We felt a little lonely. But after acclimatization it worked fine. Food was great

I was disappointed. The food was VERY tasty but comes in quite small quantities - there are only 4 small pieces of the lamb. As a side dish comes a mini plate of rice that has to be divided into 4, so 2 spoonfuls per person, which is very little for an Indian dish (spicy), anything more is charged as an extra. Otherwise, lovely staff and great location

Habe um 20:30 Uhr eine Bestellung aufgegeben. Diese wurde angenommen, allerdings wurde die Lieferzeit anschließend von anfangs 50 min immer weiter nach hinten verschoben. Um 22 Uhr wurde die Bestellung ohne weitere Angaben storniert. Absolute Frechheit. Nie wieder werde ich hier essen oder bestellen.

Wir sind während unserer Städtetour auf der Suche nach einem leckeren Mittagessen auf dieses Restaurant gestoßen. Freundliche und hilfsbereite Bedienung. Große Auswahl an Gerichten. Alles sehr appetitlich angerichtet. Hat auch super geschmeckt. Falls wir noch mal in der Nähe sind, kommen wir auf jeden Fall noch mal herein!

Alles, was ich je dort bestellt habe (immer vegetarisch), war super lecker, egal ob vor Ort, zum Mitnehmen oder geliefert. Der Kellner ist sehr professionell! Auf Extrawünsche wird stets eingegangen :) Unsere Nummer 1 in Freiburg!

Das Essen an sich hat ganz gut geschmeckt. Service ist leider echte Katastrophe. Unfreundlich und kalt trifft es relativ gut.

Das Essen schmeckt sehr gut. Leider ist der Kellner extrem unfreundlich. Wenn hier etwas am Kundenservice gearbeitet wird, würden wir gerne öfters kommen.

Die Vorspeise war leider selbst für mich als deutschen fade. Das Hauptgericht war dafür gut. Das Personal ist freundlich. Leider ist nur Barzahlung möglich.

Ich kann die schlechten Äußerungen nur bestätigen. Wir waren gestern zu acht im Restaurant mit einem Freundeskreis der oft neue Restaurants ausprobiert. Wir mussten sehr lange auf unser Essen warten, obwohl das Restaurant kaum belegt war. Auch die bei anderen Rezensionen erwähnte nicht sehr empathisch Art der Bedienung kann ich bestätigen. Das Ambiente ist auch zu wünschen übrig. Im Curryhouse bekommt man mehr für sein Geld. Dass man nicht mit Karte zahlen kann, finde ich heutzutage auch unmöglich.

Ich kann die vielen sehr negativen Bewertungen nicht bestätigen, wir mussten nicht lange auf unser Essen wsrten und hatten an einem Sonntagabend auch keine Probleme, einen Tisch zu bekommen Es stimmt allerdings, dass das Lamm und Hähnchen im Curry etwas trocken sind Dafür ist sind die Samosas und der Paneer lecker Zu empfehlen sind das vegetarische Curry mit Gemüse und Paneer und das Goa Fisch Curry

Die Lammkoteletts waren lecker, die Preise gut, dass man nicht mit EC Karte zahlen kann unpraktisch, der Umgang mit unserem Mangel an Bargeld jedoch sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend ;)

Ich bin sehr regelmäßig (und sehr gerne) bei Mahatma-Ghandi in Freiburg und bin jedes Mal sehr begeistert. Das Essen ist überwältigend gut, vor allem das "Chicken Mango"!!

Einmalig lecker auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert aber Zeit mitbringen. Wir waren abends dort und waren so froh dass wir reserviert haben weil Leute wirklich am laufenden Band weggeschickt wurden. Wie gesagt megamäßig lecker das Essen sowohl vor als auch Haupt- und Nachspeise aber wir haben echt lange auf das Essen warten müssen Punkt deshalb gibt es leider einen Stern Abzug

Das Mahatma-Gandhi ist im indischen Stil eingerichtet. An den Wänden hängen schwarz-weiß Aufnahmen von Mahatma-Gandhi. Bei meinem Besuch waren wir 8 Personen. Wir haben uns ein paar Tische zusammen geschoben, damit es passte. Das Essen war ok, aber wie anderen Kritikern schon geschrieben haben sollte man nicht so große Portionen erwarten. Bei manchen meiner Teilnehmer war die Portierung des Reises etwas zu klein, deswegen wurde nach bestellt. Außerdem mussten wir uns Besteck von anderen Tischen nehmen, weil uns zum Teil Messer gefehlt haben, aber das lag vermutlich ander Spontanität unsers erscheinen. Was uns auch nicht gefallen hat, war das man nicht mit der Karte zahlen konnte. Aber dies steht schon am Eingang auf einem Schild und somit waren wir darauf vorbereitet. Fazit: Ein durchschnittlicher Inder mit guter Ambiente. Man sollte aber nicht zu viel erwarten. Die Preise sind wegen der Inflation etwas höher. Der Service ist freundlich. Bei großen Gruppen ist eine Voranmeldung zu empfehlen.

Wir waren früh am Abend dort. Essen war gut, Preise in Ordnung, Naan und Butter Chicken insbesondere lecker. Portionen könnten etwas größer sein, aber absolut im akzeptablen Bereich. Kaum Wartezeit, da es noch sehr leer war. Mango Lassi war in Ordnung, aber der hat uns nicht umgehauen.

Bestellt bei Lieferando, kam schneller als erwartet und hat echt super geschmeckt. Aber! für 15,50€ +5€ Lieferkosten war die Portion viel zu klein.

Essen sehr gut, nur die Rechnungsausstellung lässt zu wünschen, als Gast immer Endbetrag vergleichen, da nur Quittung über Endbetrag ausgestellt wird.🙄🙏😇

Decent Indian food. I am an Indian food connoisseur and I always try the same dish the first time I go to a restaurant (Chana masala). This is definitely the worst Chana masala I’ve had at an Indian restaurant (although it wasn’t bad). Vegetable samosas were very good, but neither of the chutneys were dairy free which is uncommon in my experience. Bad service though—very unfriendly.

Accueil digne d'une prison Plats bons mais sans plus. Pas la saveur des plats indiens mangés ailleurs. Quantité très moyenne. Le plat de riz pour trois était très insuffisant en quantité. Pour en avoir juste ce qu'il faut il a fallu payer 3 euros de plus Paiement en liquide seulement. L'encaisseur garde d'office la monnaie pour lui. Restaurant à ne pas recommander. A fuir.

Das Mahatma Gandhi macht im ersten Moment einen guten Eindruck und das Essen ist auch ganz gut. Allerdings sind die Portionen für den aufgerufenen Preis sehr überschaubar. Der Reis ist für meinen Geschmack viel zu trocken. Der Mangolassi war viel zu warm. Unsere Erfahrungen im Curryhouse in Freiburg waren viel besser.

Sehr schönes Restaurant. Essen ist sehr lecker, Preis-Leistungsverhältnis absolut ok. Bedienung sehr freundlich. Waren schon mehrmals dort, gehen immer sehr gerne hin!!

Wir haben zweimal dort zu zweit vegetarisch gegessen. Wir fanden es lecker. Über die vielen schlechten Bewertungen wundere ich mich etwas. Aber: De gustibus non est disputandum.

Schönes Restaurant in der Freiburger Altstadt. Essen kann ich nur empfehlen. Gerne wieder.

Ewig lange Wartezeit von der Bestellung bis zur Suppe circa 30 Minuten. Kein Brot zur Suppe muss man extra bestellen, sehr unbillige Bedienung die einem keines Blickes würdigt. Das falsche Hauptgericht gebracht und trotz dass gesehen wurde dass die Gabel drin steckte wurde das gleiche Essen an einen anderen Tisch gebracht. Auf den Nachtisch hat man dann gleich verzichtet weil irgendwann möchte man ja schließlich auch nach Hause gehen. Teuer kleine Portionen und fragliche Hygienezustände.

Gutes Essen in den Gassen der Altstadt sehr schönes Ambiente

Das Restaurant ist in einer romantischen Gasse in der Altstadt von Freiburg gelegen. Wir haben das Mahatma-Gandhi besucht, da die benachbarten Restaurants alle voll waren, und hier noch viele Tische frei waren. Der Kellner hat uns von Beginn an kaum eines Blickes gewürdigt. Die Karte ist riesig, viel zu viel als eine kleine Küche jemals frisch kochen könnte. Alleine für unsere Tees (Fertig-Teebeutel mit heissem Wasser) mussten wir über 20 Minuten warten, obwohl das Restaurant fast leer war. Die Tassen waren dreckig, braune wegkratzbare Flecken im Inneren und Äusseren der Tassen, schlimmer als in jeder Studenten-WG. Der einzige Kellner versteckte sich den ganzen Abend im Inneren, die wenigen Gäste neben uns warteten ebenfalls alle eine Ewigkeit. Und wenn er mal kam, streckte er uns das Geschirr mit genervtem Blick ins Gesicht, weil er keine Lust hatte uns den Teller hinzulegen. Wir bestellen Hackfleisch-Samosa, bekamen aber die vegetarische Variante ohne Fleisch. Wir wiesen den Kellner darauf hin, dass diese Samosas definitiv kein Fleisch enthalten, was jeder schmecken konnte. Diese stritt es ab und verrechnete uns die teurere Fleisch-Variante. Das Essen allgemein hat nicht geschmeckt (hart, fade, fertig-saucen), wir haben es nur gegessen, weil wir extrem hungrig waren. Eine Quittung bekommt man nur auf Drängen (ohne Auflistung, was man gegessen hat, nur ein vom Kellner handgeschriebener willkürlicher Gesamtbetrag). Wer nicht über den Tisch gezogen werden will, nimmt sich nochmals eine Speisekarte und rechnet akribisch nach. Beim Bezahlen wird einem erklärt, dass nur Bargeld akzeptiert werde (obwohl man nicht darauf hingewiesen wurde und am Eingang Sticker für Kartenzahlung kleben). Wer keins dabei hat, kann zu später Stunde einen Bargeld Automaten suchen gehen. Das positivste unseres Besuchs: Entgegen unseren Befürchtungen haben wir keine Lebensmittelvergiftung davongetragen.

De passage dans cette ville renommée, nous avons eu envie de manger Indien en passant devant la terrasse de ce restaurant. La rue est piétonne et très jolie. Une terrasse agréable et simple. L accueil est un peu froid tout à bord mais après tout le service a été agréable. Une carte similaire a tous les restaurants Indiens, fournie, en Allemand et en Anglais. Les prix sont démocratiques au vu des quantités. Deux entrées et deux plats pour nous deux. Franchement le goût, les saveurs sont au rendez vous. Mon plat était un peu trop piquant pour moi, il m’a qu’ait a mon avis une petite annotation avec le dessin d un piment pour mon plat. Rien de catastrophique. Prévoyez de l espèces pour le paiement.
