While the service is nice and attentive, we could not say that this place serves authentic Indonesian dishes. We have been to and tried many Indonesian venues, the food here tastes good (as food) but is not of Indonesian flavour.

The food was great, and the service was very friendly. We'd love to come back!

I would not call this Indonesian food. It was mediocre and ok for those who wants to explore food that is not a typical German or Swiss. We had high hopes since we had great experience with the cuisine in Amsterdam.

Makan is always a good choice. Whether for lunch or to enjoy a relaxing evening, the dishes are incredibly delicious and simply something different, especially for vegans and vegetarians. My favorite is Tahu Goreng, but you should also try the Tempeh. In the summer, the large terrace is perfect for lingering. In the winter, the interior with its large glass front is ideal. The service is always friendly and attentive.

I've been there four times now, and the staff is always friendly. However, the curry, which I actually ate for the third time, was unusually spicy for us, something that had never happened before. It would therefore be nice if they could somehow give customers a choice and, for example, put chili on the table so they could adjust the spice level to their liking. :)

I ordered Ayam Goreng (fried chicken) with curry sauce, and my boyfriend ordered Sate Ayam (chicken skewers with peanut sauce). To be honest, as an Indonesian, I didn't find the food authentic at all. I couldn't even tell which region of Indonesia the fried chicken came from. The sambal didn't taste like chilies or garlic at all, but rather like lime leaves, lemongrass, and lime juice. The curry sauce tasted like something you'd get at an Asian takeaway. Also, the peanut sauce in the Sate Ayam was very watered down. Without a reservation, you basically can't get a table. The service was quite friendly. The waiters still gave us a table for less than an hour, even though they were completely booked. In summary, the food tastes like something you'd get at a typical Asian takeaway. The flavors are clearly tailored to German tastes. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to other Indonesians, but I could recommend the restaurant to Germans who might not be able to handle very spicy food and would like to get a taste of Indonesian cuisine. It's important to keep in mind, though, that it's not necessarily authentic. :)

Why would they still reserve a table at 8:30 p.m. when the kitchen closes at 9:00 p.m., and then the waitress gets so stressed that you have to make a decision right away so the kitchen can make you something to eat??? On a Saturday night? You even have to choose dessert before you can even eat anything else... Stupid. After we finished eating at around 9:30 p.m., the waitress started putting the chairs up and basically kicked you out while you were still having dessert. Also, the waitress should know to clear the empty plates from the table after the main course instead of just shoving the dessert plate on top. There was no room on the table, so the plate was only half on the table. The food really isn't good enough to justify something like that. Quite the opposite. The service is truly abysmal. And last but not least: Why would they let a group of four sit at the largest table while we, with seven people, squeezed into a smaller one? They could have just seated the group of four at the other table. So many failures in one evening... unfortunately, it ruined our evening.

Somewhat hidden but worth to be found. Unpretentious well managed restaurants with few dishes that are freshly made.

The waitress recommended the Beef Redang to us because it was typical of the chef's home region - an extremely good recommendation!

We came here today based on the good reviews and were not disappointed. The food was super fresh and an absolute explosion of flavor! As a vegetarian, I had a great selection, and I'll be dreaming about the tofu and delicious tempeh for a few nights to come. The meat-eaters among us were also thrilled! The staff was very friendly, and children are welcome too. The prices are fair, and the atmosphere is cozy. We'll definitely be back! Thank you and see you next time ❤️

We liked the setting and our little dog was alowed to come in. We liked the food overall. Muy nasi goreng was a bit spicy but I have to say I normally never eat spicy food. They offered us a doggy bag. Really nice experience.

The soto Ayam, Ayam goreng, and tempeh goreng missed flavour and ingredients to give it the Indo twist. The kopi susu and sambal were very nice and recognizable. Notable to say that my partner is born and raised in Sumatra, my taste buds and experience are coloured by her cooking and culture. If you want good asian/fusion food Makan is a good place to be, with friendly service, and nice cosy atmosphere.

The homemade iced tea was excellent, and the prices were very fair! We paid under €60 for two people, including appetizers, a main course, and an iced tea each. The atmosphere is also great! We visited Makan for the first time yesterday, and it was a truly lovely evening with very friendly, attentive, and considerate service, great drinks in the hot weather, and outstanding food. The ambiance in the beautiful beer garden with its colorful fairy lights was also absolutely perfect. The prices are fair. The portions are good. We will definitely return regularly.

If you're looking for new flavors, I recommend a trip to Indonesian cuisine. We all know and love Thai food. Indonesian food seems similar, but then surprises us with new impressions. I liked it. The staff is very friendly and quick. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. What more could you need?

Very delicious Indonesian food! Many vegetarian dishes. Unfortunately, they forgot the rice for the main course, so we ate half the meal without a side dish, but it was brought back with apologies upon request. Very nice for sitting outside!

The food tasted delicious and also looked great. We were offered homemade chicken nuggets for the kids. It was also cozy, and the service was attentive. We can therefore recommend this restaurant without reservation.

Unfortunately, I can't fully understand the good reviews. Was there twice and unfortunately found the dishes disappointing both times (and especially for the price). Some of it was quite bland, so we added a lot of seasoning. There's just nothing special in terms of taste.

I haven't been to Indonesia yet, but that's exactly how I imagine the food there. It is very tasty and has a good spiciness. If you're into that, this restaurant is definitely recommended. The price is top notch for the portions and this high quality. Service was also top and friendly.

Unfortunately my expectations were not met. I had to wait over 1 hour for my food. The fried chicken was very dry and the vegetables were only lukewarm. The cold draft from the ceiling vent not only caused me to constantly shiver, but it also cooled down the food within a very short time. The curry sauce with the rice was very tasty, and the homemade sambal also tasted delicious. The portion could have been a little larger (for the price). All in all, unfortunately this is not one of my favorite restaurants, there are better alternatives.

The Makan is really one of the top addresses for eating vegan in Freiburg. I've been there several times and think the new, larger location is very nice. Great ambience, also a lunch menu with absolutely fair prices and there is now a large outdoor area. I'm already looking forward to summer. There are lots of vegan starters, also a great selection of vegan main course and they have vegan cakes. I recently had a vegan lunch and absolutely loved the vegan bakwan. The service is very attentive and I feel super comfortable there!

We've been to the makan several times before, but today was the first time since they moved. The restaurant is really nice, you now have a lot more space and in the summer you can sit outside. The food was very tasty and the service was very friendly.

Tried lunch menu (rice, chicken, fried vegetables and some fritters on the side), nasi goreng (baked rice) and small portion of gado-gado. The taste of Nasi Goreng and Gado-Gado was dominated by Kaffir lime leaves. Unfortunately, I didn't like the kaffir lime leaf stems in the peanut sauce 🫤 The chicken at Nasi Campur was served in a red sauce that I couldn't compare to any Indonesian dish myself, even though I'm Indonesian and have traveled domestically from west to east. The taste of the sambal was dominated by tomatoes and very finely blended, it was almost like tomato juice. The atmosphere was cozy. The taste of the dishes was pure. Service was top 👍 I didn't find the taste authentically Indonesian, but it was certainly a very mild introduction to Indonesian cuisine.

This is a wonderful Indonesian restaurant. There are not many around, sadly. The food is delicious, comparable to the best I've tried. We come from Basel regularly.

My husband and I deliberately drove from the first canton of Gallen to Freiburg to eat Indonesian food. We drove quite a distance just to be able to experience the taste of Indonesian cuisine again, so we decided to spend the night in a hotel in Freiburg so that we could have dinner and lunch at this restaurant. I'm originally from Indonesia and miss Indonesian food. I searched for information for a long time and finally found the information from the internet and this restaurant got a high rating. I was a little disappointed because no one was directly told when the kitchen closed, so we couldn't order the dessert we wanted. They forgot to give us crackers, but the boss was nice and gave us a free dessert because they forgot to give us crackers. And then at lunch the boss gave me extra sambal, I really respect that. I know very well what rendang and peanut sauce taste like, but I am quite disappointed with this because it was far from my expectations. I won't say anything about the other dishes because I think they're enough, but I was pretty disappointed with the rendang and peanut sauce. Just before you eat rendang, you can already smell the scent of the rendang if it is really delicious rendang. As for the peanut sauce, Indonesian peanut sauce doesn't taste good at all to me, even the color is pale. If it's the ingredients in the dish that are a hindrance, it seems impossible considering that you can easily get them in Asian markets these days. Due to the limited ingredients, it doesn't necessarily have to be the same as the Indonesian taste, but at least don't rely on the beaten path in terms of taste. So that people who don't know can know that Indonesian food is full of flavor and not just flat. *Ayam Goreng, starter plate, Nasi Goreng (with shrimp, chicken, egg and vegetables), Nasi Campur Ayam, Dadar Gulung and Pisang Goreng are good

I had dinner with two colleagues at 6:30 p.m. - with a reservation. The food was very tasty. At 8:15 p.m. we wanted to order desserts. After looking at the clock, the waitress told us that it was "too late" for that. Our table was reserved for new guests from 8:30 p.m. Super!! We were not informed about the time limit either when making the reservation or otherwise. The nice evening was over, the mood was subdued and we were slightly sour. That was our annual department lunch - we would have liked to have stayed seated with dessert and drinks. At least they could have asked us much earlier - when clearing away the main course - whether we would like another dessert. There will be a star deduction for the sudden end of the evening without prior information. This makes it uncomfortable and gives it a fast food feel.

Despite a good recommendation, we didn't like the Makan that much. The fact that we had to wait 45 minutes for our food and the drinks took forever may have been due to the nature of the day or the service situation on this particular day, but the food itself - with the exception of the excellent spring rolls - was not as impressive as we had hoped. Our memory of Indonesian cuisine in our home country was simply different. All in all, grade 3.

We spontaneously decided, including prior online reservations, to eat here on the holiday (Reunification Day), also to get to know the new location. It is now much more spacious, pleasantly bright, and somewhat simply furnished, which in turn fits very well with the overall ambience. We had Nasi Goreng - one with shrimp, one with chicken and pre-made spring rolls. All very tasty. The hit was our desserts Pisang Goreng with passion fruit ice cream and, as a surprise, Klepons, which Jonas personally served us. Mega I haven't eaten since I was a child :)

I am a big fan of Makan Makan and have often visited the old location on Lehener Straße. Two days ago I had the opportunity to try out the new, larger location - and I was thrilled! The ambience is really successful - modern and cozy at the same time, with a lot more space, but the charm and family atmosphere have remained. But what's more important: the taste is just as excellent as before! My personal favorite dish is the Babi Ketjap. The pork belly is braised in an incredibly aromatic Ketjap sambal sauce and comes with refried beans and fragrant rice. Another highlight are the grilled chicken satay skewers with homemade peanut sauce, colorful vegetables and fragrant rice are a delight. The peanut sauce is particularly creamy and harmonizes perfectly with the juicy grilled skewers. For lovers of Indonesian cuisine, Makan Makan is an absolute must

Recently moved to Freiburg and finally an Indonesian restaurant nearby! Great service, delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. We love being there and are glad that Makan exists! Keep it up! PS: Put 'Bubur Ketan Hitam' on the menu as a dessert! I would celebrate that.

Went to the new store for the first time last night and (like the old store) we were thrilled. I can particularly recommend the vegetarian/vegan dishes - both the starter for 2 people and the tempeh dish were great. Very large portions and completely justified prices. We will come back! :-)

We found this unique style Indonesian food speciality restaurant on a day trip to Freiburg. The food was great ! All of my friends liked what they ordered. I had the “Ayam Goreng” I it was amazing - watch out for the red chilli sauce you (very hot but great fun). Lemonade is also refreshing on a summer day

We ate here because of the good reviews and the Neotaste membership. Positive: The food itself was delicious. At the beginning we had a starter plate that contained several small, mainly fried, dishes. That was delicious. For the main course we had the dishes 'Jackfruit' and 'Udang'. We liked it too, although everything tasted very similar. I'm not sure if it was the cilantro. The portions were very large. You were definitely full :) The location itself was really cozy. In the evening the beautiful fairy lights came on, which looked very nice. Negative: As I mentioned before, we came here via Neotaste. This means that we have booked one visit or one (of two) free meals for the evening (between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.). At the beginning you have to mention that you are here via this app. We were told straight away that Neotaste no longer worked today. It was 7 p.m. The validity period only started at 5 p.m. In any case, the waitress kindly let us go through, although we still asked ourselves why the restaurant was participating in Neotaste if it didn't want to comply with the conditions. In any case, it really dampened the mood right at the beginning. Even though all the tables outside were occupied, there were only two waitresses in charge of the area (I think also inside). Unfortunately, this was noticeable in the waiting time for the food and drinks as well as in the mood of the guests and the waitresses. They were never rude, but they did look very stressed and sometimes helpless. You could tell how hard they were trying, but the hectic pace and the slightly irritable nature of the guests made the atmosphere quite depressing. You had the feeling that you wouldn't want to order another drink so that you wouldn't put any additional stress on the waitresses. I think if that was an exception, you can recommend the restaurant. The food was good, the location was nice and the service was friendly. There should only be several of them :) However, it didn't work at all with Neotaste.

All dishes were very enak (Indonesian for delicious)! My wife is Indonesian and she was impressed by how authentic the food was. The nuts in the homemade tasty peanut sauce were e.g. B. not completely pureed. My jackfruit dish was also very well balanced. The owner and the waitress are very friendly and helpful. We learned that they will soon be moving to a larger location so that they can treat more guests to the delicious food at the same time 😊 We will be back!

All in all, a real insider tip for Asian restaurants. It's probably no longer so secret, as reservations are absolutely necessary for the few places available. It's better not to come spontaneously when you're hungry. When you make a reservation, there is a time slot, but you will be treated very nicely and with the best Asian delicacies (also vegetarian and vegan). The sauces for the varied and very tasty starter dishes range from brilliant to really Asian spicy. Tip: Don't take the small table at the entrance, where there is a draft and everyone walks past you.

The Makan Makan seems very small at first, but in terms of service and food it can keep up very well with the larger ones, which is certainly not always easy given the variety of dishes compared to the throughput of guests per evening. The starters were extremely good and the main courses were in no way inferior in almost all cases. Only the tempeh could have been a little juicier. Even as a good eater, I had to have the rest packed up; the combination was too good to just pick out the morsels and let the rest go back. The homemade lime iced tea left us wanting more. The service was very friendly and always kept eye contact with the table in case someone needed something without feeling like they had to maximize consumption. The atmosphere is very cozy and overall very quiet despite the dining room being full. This is an ideal place, especially if you are planning a meeting where there will be a lot of talking. One point deducted for the somewhat low tables in the atmosphere but overall definitely worth 5 stars. I'm extremely impressed and it's definitely not the last time I've been there and can therefore recommend the Makan Makan in Freiburg without exception

Friendly, courteous and welcoming ambience! Cosy comforts with all the yummyness you need for an evening out… Unfortunately , the bakso was not available that day but the soto ayam as starters, followed by a huge portion of Nasi Padang for two and desserts that reminded me of home — was absolutely perfect!
