Delicious and fast food! We had a very good ice cream. The goulash soup and my partner's frikandel were also excellent.

We met up with some friends at the "Golden Kettle" on Bolkerstrasse for a meal and some Altbier. Since the place is so centrally located in the Old Town (right near Heinrich-Heine-Allee), it was the perfect meeting point for us. Food & Drink: Schumacher Altbier is known to be a matter of taste, but we thought it was excellent – ​​fresh, flavorful, and perfectly chilled. The food was also top-notch: If you like hearty brewery fare, you'll be in heaven. The portions were generous and very tasty. Service: A huge compliment to the staff! Despite the place being packed, the waiters (Köbesse) were incredibly efficient. We were never left waiting long; the next round often arrived almost automatically, just as you'd expect in Düsseldorf. They were always friendly and had a witty remark ready without being pushy. Service: A huge compliment to the staff! Ambiance: This is exactly what you imagine a Düsseldorf brewery to be: rustic, wood-paneled, and steeped in tradition. The atmosphere was lively and cozy; we immediately felt at home. Conclusion: If you want to spend an authentic evening with friends in the Old Town, this is the place to be. We'll definitely be back!

The food was very good. However, it was cold, drafty, and very noisy.

For me, as a Düsseldorf native, it's always a go-to spot right in the heart of the old town. A quaint and cozy brewery atmosphere. Down-to-earth and authentic cuisine, accompanied by a freshly tapped Schumacher Altbier. The food is good quality, and the prices are comparable to other breweries in the area. And getting a friendly word from the Köbes (waiter) is all part of the experience.

Huge single roomed pub/micro brewery on the edge of Dusseldorf. Great vibe. The pizza looked great but unfortunately I didn't have time to eat.

I went there after 12 noon on a Tuesday, but it was closed. I thought it had gone out of business, but when I passed by around 3 o'clock, it was open.

We won't be back. We just had dinner at this place, and the waiter's service was appalling. When we didn't leave him a tip, he threw our credit card on the table and treated us terribly when we went to pay, yelling "come on!" (in a mocking way). The food was neither tasty nor special, yet very expensive – €34 for a schnitzel that was more like a frozen, low-quality schnitzel. A colleague received a dirty drinking glass, and despite asking the waiter several times, he didn't get a replacement. The meatball and fried egg were completely salted. The waiter was incredibly unfriendly. The only good thing is the central location. A tourist trap.

Some random mustard instead of Abb mustard in Abb pots on the tables. Do they think nobody will notice? That's how brewery culture goes to the dogs.

The best Düsseldorf Altbier, only the Latzenbier is better. Good old brewery atmosphere. You have to like the clientele on Bolker Street.

We regularly can't get a table here because there are "enough people." The waiters are among the most unfriendly service staff I've ever encountered. Why become a waiter if you don't like the guests? The food is rather average. More for tourists.

I've been coming back for 15 years and it's always great. Food for every recommendation. Short wait. Beer, very good. Again in the same place. Kudos to the quality of the food and service. When I'm in town, it's a place to visit. Unique food.

The prices are a bit higher, reflecting the central location, but the quality of the food is every bit as good as that of famous German breweries. The slightly grumpy demeanor of the staff is simply part of the experience, just like in Cologne.

The food was delicious. I only deducted one star for the portion size; it was a bit small. The service was excellent at the beginning but declined towards the end. The atmosphere, however, was fantastic. Since I don't drink alcohol, I would have appreciated the option of a non-alcoholic beer. To my surprise, they didn't have any.

Tradition meets hospitality – unfortunately only in the brochure. Last night, like every second Thursday of the month, we wanted to enjoy our usual Alt beer at Schumacher on Bolkerstraße. A beloved Düsseldorf tradition among friends. Unfortunately, this time it wasn't a convivial evening, but a lesson in "trade fair hospitality." At first, everything went as usual: A Köbes kindly showed us the table, we sat down, and looked forward to our Alt beer. Then another Köbes – apparently the keeper of the sales table – came and asked for our food order. We honestly said: "Just a meatball, but I'd love an Alt beer with it." Well, that was probably the wrong thing to say at the wrong time. Instead of a fresh Alt beer, we got a dressing down: We were taking away the seats of trade fair guests with whom we could "generate a few hundred euros in sales." And asked if we would be so kind as to "free up the table immediately." That made the imaginary Alt beer stick in our throats. We immediately moved on. We didn't want to stay where we weren't welcome. Conclusion: Tradition is a top priority here – not the tradition of Düsseldorf conviviality, however, but rather the tradition of maximizing sales. Apparently, there's no room for regulars when international trade fair guests are waving their credit cards. A true piece of the old town – but unfortunately in the wrong sense of the word.

Yesterday at 8:15 p.m., we wanted to have a few beers with six people. The old town was rather empty; there was no trade fair, and it was a Tuesday. Unfortunately, all the tables, which was roughly 30% of the place, had "reserved" signs. When asked, we received the following (abbreviated) answer: You can only get a table if you're eating. A bit odd for a brewery. Oh well, there are other places. We spent our €120 at a more customer-oriented place. We'll do that again in the future.

Brilliant Alt beer in the center of the ALT city

It's a very good place if you want to have a beer and eat something typical, the price is very good, just be careful because as soon as you have 2 fingers of beer left they bring you another one until you cover it, which isn't bad but you can get scared, plus some waiters speak Spanish so there are no problems ordering or understanding each other.

The worst food experience and service ever

Very nice pub. The oldest brewery in the city. I liked the service, the smiling and attentive waiter took care of us. The knuckle and side dishes are very tasty, the beer is a little bitter for me, but still interesting. I will visit again if I have the opportunity

A rustic place with a lovely, cozy brewery atmosphere in Düsseldorf's Old Town. The Altbier is freshly tapped, the pork knuckle is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and served with perfect fried potatoes. Especially recommended: the Pillekuchen (pile cake) – a Rhenish specialty you rarely find anywhere else. Top-quality here, served with apple cider – a must-try! Friendly service, an all-around successful visit.

An absolute (gastronomic) classic in Düsseldorf's Old Town. A very friendly waiter dedicated to service. A recommendation for Düsseldorf's Old Town. The Alt is always a delight. Thank you for the pleasant conversation with the waiter. It won't be my last time at the Schwemme.

I ordered crispy pork knuckle with salad and fried potatoes, and a coke. Sadly, the only food that I enjoyed was the coke. I was expecting crispy pork skin, but it was so hard, tough and chewy, even the meat inside. I feel it was there for a long time and like put on a microwave or reheated. The bottom part skin is not crispy and I think it’s because they only fry the top part. I only ate 1/4 part of the meat, because it’s also very salty:(( The frier potatoes was also very greasy and not crispy as well. When I was paying, the staff kept on asking how much tip I want to give. At first I already said no, and I’m not sure if didn’t understand me, so I asked again how much is the total, and then he asked me to choose again in the card reader on how much tip will I give. So just to finish everything, and leave immediately, I chose the lowest tip possible.

Nice place, a bit off the beaten track but within sight of the police. Perfect for people who might feel a bit uncomfortable in crowds. The staff are very attentive and friendly.

Waiters are the best customers. The standing tables right at the entrance, among the guests, are the meeting point for smoke breaks every 20 minutes. Cigarette butts are discarded on the floor. Loud arguments about things that are of no interest to the guests occur. This kind of behavior is not only disrespectful but also unbelievable.

Difficult! When you go to a brewery, you know what to expect! The atmosphere was okay, typical! It wasn't even that crowded! The food was okay! We had 6 dishes, 4 of which weren't properly warm! The food we originally ordered was reordered after 45 minutes!!! as sold out! The wait times were incredibly long, despite the relatively empty dining room! Altbier is served quickly and easily, everything else takes forever! As if the waiters aren't up for it! We had to ask 4-5 times for a Coke! The waiters had their typical, old-town, snotty manner—you know, it was okay!

The waiters really go out of their way to avoid serving newly arrived guests. Unfortunately, waving doesn't help, even after the waiters have turned away three times with their eyes downcast. The staff also seems to be unfamiliar with saying thank you.

German experience is usually having to call a waiter to take your order and the food taking a bit of time to get there. No problem. We waited an hour and twenty minutes for food. Our order initially taken was forgotten. The waiter who was SUPPOSED to take our order decided we were NOT as important as his birthday party table across which he stood and talked to longer than he could keep interest on us. We had to have another waiter take our order. 😊 For the german experience of customer service being horrendous, spot on!! And they had the gall to ask for a tip afterwards. Uh, no. You didn't do anything to deserve a tip.

Every year I go to the Goldener Kessel asparagus dinner, everything is fresh and warmly prepared, highly recommended, the restaurant is recommended to make a reservation in the evening, very good attentive service and fast service, can highly recommend the Goldener Kessel in Düsseldorf

The only complaint is the dark beer, but that's okay.

An incredibly beautiful and enjoyable place. The food is legendary. I went in the evening and it was like a retirement meeting :)) I shared the table with a Russian family and they were very sweet. By the way, it was a Turkish waiter who served :)) well done to everyone 🙏

Not the best experience, honestly, but I'll probably come back to give this place another chance. Our server kindly spoke English when it got a bit loud and hard to hear, which we appreciated. They did, however, leave our glasses empty—a small but disappointing lapse. The food was okay—a little salty, but standard German fare. Nothing stood out. What surprised me, however, was that the server suggested a tip of over 10% while also mistakenly charging us for an extra beer. It seems the previous customers' coaster hadn’t been replaced. Not feeling up to a confrontation in my non-native language, we decided to pay and leave. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere for now until the service improves. I hope they can address these issues, as the beer alone makes it worth another visit.

Unfortunately we had a very unpleasant experience at this restaurant. We wanted to order a beer outside, but were rudely rejected by the waiter and sent away. The tone was inappropriate and we felt unwelcome. It's a shame because we actually wanted to try the place out.

A very old restaurant, the owner is a white-haired old man, I think maybe he inherited this restaurant from his father? Good service, very good and strong beer. This is very German, German breakfast drinks are German wheat juice sparkling water, right (laughing)? A Frenchman came here, he said to the boss can I have a Coke? The customers laughed, someone said this is Germany, if you want Coke, please go to KFC across the street, then the Frenchman laughed, and finally he drank a beer

Absolutely terrible atmosphere! I came to this beer restaurant for the first time and approached the man who served the beer. He started being rude and mocking me. I think that if someone doesn't speak the language perfectly, that's no reason to mock them. I came to taste beer, not to demonstrate my language skills. What's the problem? I didn't understand it.

My wife and I had something to eat at the Goldener Kessel on February 1st, 2025 because we were completely ignored by the employees in the restaurant opposite, the restaurant was completely overcrowded and far too loud. In the Goldener Kessel I immediately found a waitress who I asked if there was still a table available for two. This was shown to us, we were led there and sat down. The next waitress came within seconds and offered us the first Altbier, which we politely accepted. For dinner I had a “halwen Hahn” as a starter, which I think is what is supposed to be the Düsseldorf version of a “Handkäs”. As a boy from Frankfurt, I was curious and even if it doesn't come close to the handkäs of my hometown, it was also a very tasty experience. For the main course I had the meatball with fried egg and fried potatoes. I have to say, I have never eaten such a juicy and tender meatball in my life. I have no idea how that works, nor do I want to because all that matters is that it was delicious! Every now and then I had to go to the toilet and I was thrilled there too. There was a kind of miniature exhibition built into the wall above the urinals, which surprised me very positively. In general the toilet was very clean and well maintained. When paying, we asked whether we accepted card payment or whether we would prefer cash. You were very subtly told that you would prefer cash. Unfortunately, we weren't able to tip that much because we only had enough cash in our pockets to tip a little less than 10%. That wasn't a bad intention! In conclusion, we could say that we really enjoyed it from start to finish and we would be happy to come back if we ever end up in Düsseldorf again. Best regards Patrick Stößel

As always, delicious old. And a meatball to cluck your tongue. Large, behind it many a chip shop can cut off a slice, and fresh from the pan. Yummy.

If you want to try traditional german cuisine this place is spot on. We were a group of 6 people and ordered a platter, so we were served slow cooked pork knuckle, pork gammon, sausages, mash potato, sautee potatoes, sauerkraut, german mustard(of course) and beers kept on coming. Red wine was really good as well. Didn't have any space for pudding. Service was spot on. Can't fault anything really.

Terrible experience, the waiter looked very upset that I had arrived. I sat down and he came very abruptly telling me they only have one beer of small size. I left without even looking at the menu. You will lose customers with such an angry waiter.

Its an old fashioned restaurant. A lot of wooden interieur and friendly waiters. Very clean and cosy angles to be. It offers a lot of Space to sit with many tables. Perfectly suited for groups from 4 till 6 people, but can be suited for bigger groups easily, by moving the tables and chairs. The food is very good and local. Since it is very old fashioned, also a lot of dishes with meat are offered, but also some less vegetarian menues are available. The portions are good and price is also fine. Monday is their day off.

You can tell that a lot is going on in the restaurant. Unfortunately, the waitresses seem very stressed. We were there with a larger group. Since we were two vegetarians, we had to sit at a separate table otherwise the waitresses would get confused. Once everyone else had their food, we were able to order drinks and, after asking several times, also our food. The food was good, the rest was pretty bad...
