Hus op'n Diek - Fischrestaurant in Cuxhaven

I think it lacks that special chef's touch to awaken the palate of those who will try the dish. The portions are generous and well-presented. The service is a bit slow, and I've noticed this in all the restaurants and bars I've frequented in Germany. Locals say this is normal. However, if they want to attract customers, they will have to improve.

The food was very tasty and delicious. We each ordered an appetizer and a main course. The appetizer arrived after about 15 minutes. Then, shortly after, the main course arrived, even though we hadn't finished our appetizers. This is unacceptable service for a restaurant, and when I complained, the waiter gave me a rude reply. We've been to this fish restaurant several times before, but this will definitely be our last visit.

There's no better place if you want good fish at good prices. It's tradition at the oldest fish restaurant in Cuxhaven. Always friendly service. It's no coincidence that we hosted our wedding guests there in the private room. If you don't know "Hus op'n Diek," it's your own fault.

We were very excited about the food and service, especially after our less-than-ideal experience with another fish restaurant on New Year's Eve, where we found the price-performance ratio and service disappointing. We can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant. The food was excellent (redfish fillet with shrimp and fried potatoes, and pasta with shrimp). A small change to the dish was easily accommodated. The portions were very generous and visually appealing. The service was competent and friendly. Thank you for a wonderful evening! We will definitely be back!

Update 12/30/25... After two years, we ventured back and weren't disappointed. A completely different menu, and apparently a different chef. The food was once again delicious and attractively presented. This is how we've known Hus opn Diek for many years. // We've been coming to Cuxhaven several times a year for years and eat there very often. Delicious food, extremely friendly staff, and a very appealing atmosphere. We always enjoy coming back and happily recommend Hus op'n Diek. Update 10/30/22 After happily giving it 5 stars months ago, I have to revise my opinion since Sunday. It was absolutely packed, thank goodness restaurants are open again, but what I was served was actually worth zero stars. The fried potatoes weren't cooked through, very firm to the bite, and bore no resemblance to fried potatoes at all! I've known them to be completely different at Hus opn Diek for years. These ones from Sunday had barely seen a frying pan, if at all, and were strangely seasoned. They used to have a little bacon and onions, but this time there was nothing! And they were very, very tough. After a waiter asked if I had enjoyed them, I said no, expressed my dissatisfaction, and he said he would pass it on to the kitchen. That was the end of it—no apology, no complimentary coffee. Even if they hadn't expected so many guests, something like this shouldn't happen. I'm disappointed, as Haus opn Diek has been a restaurant we've frequented for many years. Update 12/27/22 - Haus opn Diek has proven that the weekend of October 30th was an exception...we were there on December 27th. Back again and everything's just like before. The food quality is excellent once more, and the staff is as quick and friendly as ever. So, of course, Hus opn Diek will see us again, as we would have been surprised if the usual high-quality service and service had declined so drastically... 5 stars Update 12/30/23 Unfortunately, it has to be said that the food quality is very inconsistent and hasn't improved. While I had green beans with bacon in October, on 12/29/23 the bacon was completely missing from the beans, even though the menu lists beans with bacon for the hake dish 🤔. For years, we've come to Cuxhaven several times a year and have always been frequent visitors to Hus opn Diek. The food quality varies from month to month, so we've actually kept going back, even though we've noticed the dirty placemats on the table for years. We might be satisfied one day, only to realize the next day... we won't be going back. And yet, we kept trying. A male server even made a general snide remark about guests from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to us once; he should remember that he makes his living from tourism, and there are always a lot of guests from NRW in Cuxhaven. January 2nd, 2024, was truly the last time we went there... the hake in lobster sauce with Mediterranean vegetables... fat was swimming on top of the pasta, the eggplant and zucchini were mush, I expected bell peppers, but there weren't any. Instead, there were very Mediterranean carrots... rock hard, the chef had just thrown them in. The taste... simply disgustingly greasy and only of dill... also very Mediterranean. The hake was bone dry. After I complained, the female server carried my plate back to the kitchen past the manager and another server, making fun of my complaint, which I could see. She did offer to pack it up for me... but there would still have been fat on it!!?? Conclusion: That's it...there are plenty of restaurants in Cuxhaven with consistently excellent quality where the kitchen and service staff don't collapse when the place is packed. Apparently, the owner doesn't care when negative reviews are made public. If this were my place, I would talk to the kitchen staff, but instead, he keeps opening one restaurant after another...but to each their own, we won't be supporting these establishments anymore.

Fish dishes that will leave you feeling full, and not just because of the side dishes. Highly recommended. The maritime atmosphere also makes it easy to enjoy a second beer.

We went to the all-you-can-eat prawn restaurant for the first time today. After hearing some negative reviews, we wanted to see for ourselves and we weren't disappointed! It was fantastic!!! The prawns were perfectly cooked and seasoned just right so you could actually taste the prawn – which we thought was excellent! – and not over-seasoned so you could only taste the garlic. If you like garlic, you can dip them in the two different dips. It came with baguette, French fries, and a crisp, fresh salad. The prawns were always piping hot, and the portions were cooked quickly upon request. The ambiance was charmingly decorated for Christmas, and the service was very attentive and exceptionally friendly. We felt very comfortable and will definitely be back! We highly recommend you! Thank you for the lovely evening 🫶

Yesterday, the four of us went to "hus op'n Diek" and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. While reservations were possible, they weren't necessary that night, as there was still space available. The service was attentive and quick! Drinks and appetizers arrived promptly. We especially want to highlight the crab bruschetta, which was topped with crab, herring, and salmon: it was so good that we ordered it twice! ☺️ For our main courses, we had schnitzel, plaice, and pan-fried fish, all fresh, well-prepared, and very tasty. A highlight was the mustard sauce, which, according to one of us, a self-confessed mustard sauce fanatic, was "the best ever." The ambiance is cozy and inviting. Parking is available directly across the street, making a visit pleasantly uncomplicated. In short: Excellent food, fair prices, and a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended! ...were here again for dinner this evening. After the change of management in 2024, this traditional and oldest restaurant in Cuxhaven is back on track. We had the large fish platter for two and the redfish in beer batter, along with the delicious bottled Zwickel in a chilled stein mug (it's nice that this has been maintained). We all enjoyed it very much and were well-fed. Of course, we're more familiar with burgers and steaks, but there was little reason to criticize the fish fillets and the plentiful crab. Fish platter for two with North Sea crab, pangasius and zander fillets (not quite North Sea), redfish fillets and plaice fillets, good fried potatoes, delicious remoulade, and a side salad as a starter (which was just standard). The redfish in its various preparations also tasted very good with the beer crust. The young staff was friendly, attentive, and well-trained. Unfortunately, the drinks took a little longer to arrive than the food. It was a lovely evening and I'd happily recommend it again 👌

Very tasty, not greasy, no thick coating on the fish, the quality was just right. Okay, I deducted a point because the service wasn't quite right. The ambiance is nautical, the food is okay, but beware of the crab dishes. Some menus don't mention that there's a surcharge for crab, and the bill is only available upon explicit request.

Pumpkin soup as a starter (a portion is practically a main course). For the main course, two venison goulash dishes with red cabbage, one with spaetzle and the other with fried potatoes. Absolutely excellent value for money. Service is friendly and always attentive. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant (but not in the conservatory).

We happened upon this place quite by chance and had a delicious herring roll. The herring was very tender and the rolls were very well-filled. We sat outside on the cozy terrace.

The menu was excellent, the quality was top-notch, the service was professional, and the prices were reasonable. We'll be back. Yesterday we were back at Huso'pn Diek with friends. You wouldn't believe it, BUT the service has improved even further. It was very busy, the food was top-notch as always, and the wait time was reasonable. The service was attentive, friendly, professional, and fast, but not intrusive. WE'LL BE BACK. We made our return visit a reality last night. 32 people attended the dinner buffet, and everyone was very impressed with the selection and quality of the food and drinks. We will definitely hold our next event at the same location. Many thanks to the entire team and the manageress and chef.

I had a burger with fries – they were quite good, the fries were a bit over-salted. Service was super friendly – ​​top-notch. Then came the bill 😂 HELP With the burger, I also got three drinks, and when the bill came to almost €30, I was shocked. A 0.3-liter Coke costs €4.50 – for comparison, the 0.4-liter Coke costs €4.60 and a 0.5-liter Coke costs €4.90. Unfortunately, we didn't check the prices of the drinks beforehand, as pretty much all of them are the same price. But this was by far the most expensive Coke ever. And I think that's totally excessive. They also charge an extra €1 for ketchup and mayo. So, the whole lunch menu isn't worth it anymore 😂 I think such additional costs should be mentioned at the table.

The fish plates were sumptuous, the fish nicely breaded, but unfortunately cooked a bit too long, with some of the protein already seeping out. A little less heat, and I'd be happy :) Otherwise, a very nice atmosphere, a great Nordic shop.

In recent years, I've avoided this restaurant because I've been disappointed by the food several times. Now, on August 19, 2025, I was here again for lunch. I had "Freshly caught and juicy plaice fillets on a vegetable and potato pan" for €22.90. I was so excited about it. It was truly a delight. And the presentation was beautiful, too. So I decided to order the exact same dish again a day later. Unfortunately, it wasn't. From the two photos, you can perhaps see why I was disappointed. What a shame!

Everything is just right here! The food is excellent, the service is excellent (special requests were not forgotten), and the location on the dike is perfect! A definite recommendation!

Delicious fish, friendly service. Only the plaice was cooked a bit too long. The beer was served well chilled with an ice-cold mug, as Zwick'l beer should be 😄 We were here twice because of the proximity to the harbor and the accommodation.

We absolutely wanted to eat fish and burgers on our vacation. We went here because they allow dogs. The burger was incredibly delicious, and the sauces were amazing. Kudos to the chef. My shrimp pasta was also very, very tasty; I can't say anything negative. And the young waitress was also really, really nice and attentive. We also gave him a big thumbs-up for that. Excellent Seafood in the heart of Cuxhaven. We dropped by on recommendation from the concierge from the Stadt Hotel and were not disappointed. The restaurant was busy but service was good and the food beautiful prepared. I can recommend the "Krabbensuppe", the Labskaus and the Red Seabass. All masterful seasoned, prepared and plated.

A must-visit when in Cuxhaven. Delicious food, great service.
