This was probably one of the best culinary experiences I’ve had in my life. It’s easy to make a nice steak with quality ingredients, but being able to take so many unusual components and turn them into a such unique masterpiece is the mark of a true chef. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, our evening in Scharff's Schlossweinstube was extremely disappointing despite the generally good food. You can tell from the cuisine, the menu and also the prices that the cooking here is done with a standard that reflects Mr. Scharff's past experience in star restaurants. Unfortunately, not a single part of the ensemble is even remotely able to meet the expectations that a menu price of €136 for a menu without wine accompaniment creates. The organization of the service is a disaster. The amuse-bouche arrives long after the first course has already been eaten. The rabbit roulade in the second course is no longer even lukewarm. The order of five different bottles of vintage wine to accompany the respective courses (all from the menu) was initially acknowledged by the service without a word. For the first course we received: Nothing. After repeated inquiries on our part, we finally learned (at this point the second course was already on the table) that the wine could not be found. Something similar happened with the other bottles. Incorrect vintages were passed without any comment. When the expected accompanying bottle for the main course (a red wine, Pinot Noir GG from Franz Keller) had not appeared even after the dishes had been cleared away, a completely unsuitable white wine was succinctly offered as a replacement (again after repeated requests). Throughout the evening we had to ask about any ailments repeatedly, and there was no communication from the team whatsoever. Questions about the contents of the quite tasty food were only answered with "I don't know", "it's like herbal butter" and similar platitudes. Basic serving rules were not followed. Across the board, the impression is that hard-working but completely untrained service staff are supposed to shoulder a task that none of them are even remotely up to. The conclusion is a real shame, as the cuisine and the picturesque setting in Heidelberg Castle basically offer great potential for an excellent culinary evening. I hope that our experience, perhaps due to the short-term absence of trained service staff, was a painful exception and I wish everyone involved that the concept works better on other evenings. The location deserves it.
