This restaurant faces the square. The staff were friendly, but they only accept cash. The onion soup was a little sour. Four of us ate three servings of German food on a platter, and we couldn't finish it all.

Very hospitable and service oriented place. Located in the heart of this historic part of Frankfurt. I had the jägerschnitzel for lunch. It was good, but not the best I’ve had. The ambiance and setting are quite perfect.

We visited on our first night in Frankfurt, hoping to try something traditional. We ordered a pork knuckle and a plate of sausages. The sausages were decent, but the pork knuckle still had many visible pig hair on it, which was extremely off-putting and frankly quite unacceptable. Service was disappointing as well. The staff seemed disengaged. They took our order, brought the food, and were essentially ready to take payment and move us out. There was little warmth, attentiveness, or genuine hospitality throughout the experience. The waiters also appeared uninterested in what they were serving, which added to the overall lacklustre atmosphere. Definitely would not recommend.

Absolute disaster! Don't go there under any circumstances. There are 100 better restaurants in Frankfurt where you can get real Hessian cuisine. It's just a rip-off. And the service is rude to boot.

Not a good experience. The waitresses were really rude as long as you're not German / do not speak German. The food is not that good, you can find it at a uni cafeteria for a cheaper price. I do not recommend this place at all, do not stop to eat there.

Firstly, the staff was quite rude, especially if you are a foreigner. If you are impressed by the atmosphere and don’t even attempt to speak German to the waitresses, you will be pretty much ignored or receive very hostile service. Secondly, the menu is quite varied with traditional German food, and at first sight it might look appealing. But then the food gets brought to the table and harsh reality hits you. You tell yourself that this food is not worth the price. I ordered the Bratwurst and received a very sad-looking fake sausage along with supermarket-style fries. Thirdly, card payment is only possible if you pay above €20 (which I wouldn’t even recommend spending for this quality), and there is no sign indicating this rule anywhere in the restaurant.

A small, quaint restaurant with friendly service and very good food. The fries were crispy and warm, the Spätzle were firm, and the mushroom sauce was made with fresh mushrooms. Good portion sizes—not too much, not too little—and reasonably priced.

Delicious food, and they accommodate special requests. You don't have to wait long for food or drinks. Everything was great!

I had a disappointing experience. The waitress (blonde, possibly the owner) was very rude and unfriendly. The prices were quite high — I paid €11 for just two drinks (a double espresso and a Kakao with espresso), which feels overpriced. At first, she said we could pay only in cash, but after some discussion, she suddenly accepted card payment. Overall, not a welcoming atmosphere and poor service. I would not recommend this place.

A place right on Römerberg Square with mediocre food and the worst, rudest service I've experienced recently. It's a shame that with such a prime location, they can serve reheated traditional German dishes with such sloppy service. Clearly, the staff here have no desire to earn customer satisfaction. We had a long layover on our way to Madrid and decided to grab a quick dinner at what was supposed to be Frankfurt's most picturesque spot. We had two backpacks and decided to put them on a high table next to the bar to pay the bill. A waitress came shouting and reprimanded me for doing so, explaining that it wasn't hygienic (you should have seen the state of the bathrooms...). I replied that you can't treat customers like that in Spain, and she literally responded, "There's no hygiene in Spain." This place will probably close and change owners soon.

My husband and I ate here on October 14th, 2025 for lunch after his interview at the US Consulate. I ordered the Frankfurt Schnitzel and subtitled the potatoes for Spatzel. The Schnitzel was a little tough to cut with a butter knife but otherwise my meal was delicious. I can't remember what my husband ordered but he enjoyed his meal as well. The blonde waitress who served us was nice and friendly. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing. I have been reading all the other reviews, especially the ones that transpired over the past month and can honestly say that our experience was NOTHING like what others have said. I'm from the USA, and I only speak English. I was treated with nothing but patience, respect and kindness. My husband is German so the way you are treated by the staff isn't determined by if you are a tourist or not. It seems to me that a lot of the bad reviews on here are being given by individuals who are spending €10 or less. This is more of an upscale restaurant. The way the reviews are written leads me to believe that maybe a lot of the individuals writing them probably came in with a sense of entitlement or a bad attitude in the first place. I would definitely eat here again if I ever found myself back in Frankfurt.

We returned a year and a half later, and nothing is the same. They're not the same people. They're just there for the money, the tourists. Little patience because they don't speak German, and they're always in a rush. In short, the food was okay, but little else. Ilsa Schreiber's sausages, which you can get at the market itself (Krakauer, Rindswurst, Fleuschwurst), are much better, better priced, and the service is friendlier. That said, they're real sausages, not what we eat here called Frankfurt sausages, which are like chewing gum.

A cute little restaurant with a beautiful location (and view) and delicious German food (especially the pork loin with mushroom cream sauce is highly recommended). Lovers of the typical Frankfurt green sauce with schnitzel will also get their money's worth here!

My experience at this restaurant was extremely disappointing. My wife and I were seated and waited for 15 minutes without anyone coming to provide us with a menu. The staff seemed completely indifferent, cleaning the tables nearby as if we weren’t even there. We felt ignored and unwelcome, so we decided to leave immediately. Even as we were leaving, no one spoke to us or acknowledged our presence. Overall, the service was unacceptable and extremely unprofessional.

I don't know if it's typical of Germany, but this is the second restaurant we've been to where the welcome is frosty, even impolite... The restaurant's decor is nice. The food is decent but not amazing. It's a decent option, but I don't necessarily recommend this place.

We were so smitten, we circled back later that afternoon for escargot, and oh, what a encore! Tender snails swimming in a molten sea of gouda cheese—rich, garlicky, and so incredible we scraped the ramekin clean, dreaming of seconds. Hands down, our favorite haunt in Frankfurt am Main—a cozy corner where flavors flirt with history, and every visit feels like coming home. If you're square-side, sidle up to Zum Standesamtchen. We stopped in for dinner after our walk. Everything was great until it was time to pay. We wanted to pay by card, but none of them seemed to work, and then we suddenly discovered they had an ATM in the basement. We had to withdraw money with a commission. This was the first time I'd encountered such a scam in Germany.

I was with my boyfriend on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the lovely restaurant Zum Standesämtchen Frankfurt. The staff are so friendly and patiently fulfilled every request and are happy to accommodate any requests you might have. It's a lovely, cozy space both inside and out. Where you just feel at home. The food was also excellent and we didn't have to wait long, and the prices were right! We were truly impressed and will definitely come back. Kalbgoulasch and spetzle was delicious. My friends Schweinehaxe was a little dry but very traditional. I love the atmosphere on the Römer. Bier is always good in Germany!

Honestly, one would expect a lot more from such a historic restaurant, but it seems the place is purely geared toward tourists. The old-world German charm of the ambiance is wonderful, but it's overshadowed by very unfriendly staff and absolutely carelessly prepared food that's not worth the money.

Absolute RUDNESS from the Waiter. Had an absolute awful experience because of the trestment they gave us. I didnt know being a jerk was a requirement to work here. If you are trying to have a good time and be treated like a normal person, dont go here. Also your “policy” of you can only pay with card if you eat you get food and not drinks, but saying i cant pay with card because french fríes are not “food” its absolutely dumb.

The waitresses were rude: 1st woman with blond hair ignored me for long time (the terrace was not full) - I wanted to be seated, the 2nd woman with dark hair didn’t want to seat me on the terrace because I was alone although there were a lot of free tables but after a heavy sigh she found a table for me and treat me bad. A pleasant German summer café with a summer terrace on the bustling Römerplaz, offering aromatic ☕️ coffee and friendly staff. It's always busy and interesting, and the square often hosts events and celebrations. You'll also enjoy the beautiful view of the Town Hall and the Farwerk houses. I highly recommend it!

This restaurant is in a prime location which is hard to beat with a perfect view of the Römer both from inside and outside. While touristy, the food is solid. I loved my Schnitzel with Green Sauce and fried potatoes. They also have a nice local Riesling. Friendly service.

Even though we were seated first, the 2-3 groups that arrived later than us received their orders first, and their food came out faster. I don't know if it was intentional, but when we tried to order, they told us to wait, and when we tried to pay, they told us to wait. It's not a pleasant experience. Please keep that in mind.

On my very first day in the old town, my wife and I decided to stop at this restaurant. Let me say, in all my years in the restaurant industry 24 years living in France and 8 years in the U.S. I have never experienced customer service this bad. From the moment we sat down, the older brunet female server showed impatience don’t listen our order. I hadn’t even finished my order when she grabbed the menus away, not even letting my wife order properly. When we simply tried to take a picture, she shocked us by yelling across the room, telling us it was prohibited, humiliating us in front of other guests mind you it is not prohibited to take pictures. What struck me even more: she was smiling giving hugs and kind to German customers, but to us, speaking English, she made sure to be dismissive and rude. At the end, she still expected a big tip, and when she wasn’t happy, she spoke badly about us. This level of unprofessionalism is unacceptable. A server who treats guests with hostility instead of respect should either be retrained or let go.

Waitress with short hair was terribly rude to us. Food and beer was terrible. Avoid this place at all costs. Only positive is the location of this diner but it isn’t worth it for a meal lol. Went there for lunch last week with my husband and waitress yelled at me “SIT DOWN!” We waited patiently for 15 or 20 mins to order as we understood it was busy and we were not that hungry yet. When she finally came to take our order, we just reopened the menu for a second and she said “if you’re not ready I’ll come back” even though we clearly waited a long time already. So we hurriedly stated our order for her before she walked away from our table. Once we ordered she threw the beer and water down on the table and the glass for the water almost toppled. Food came and she threw the plate down on the table. Food was terrible and summer bees (?) were flying around the food with no help from the waitresses to deal with them. Pork knuckle was dry and sauerkraut was super salty. Sauce was brown diluted sauce. Beer was disgusting and sour like it’s been out for a week. We finished eating and were ready to make payment. She made eye contact with my husband 3x and we signalled the bill sign and she said wait 3x. Throughout these 3x, she served 2-3 new tables from seating them down, to giving them the menu, to taking their orders. And these were big groups. The other waitress in charge of the other area already settled the bill with a few other tables at this point. Avoid at all costs. A lot of better restaurants around the area to go to instead.

We felt pressured to leave a tip, which made the visit uncomfortable. This type of behavior is unacceptable in a restaurant. I won't be returning.

If you snag a seat inside, you'll find yourself in a quaint setting. Outside, you have a view of the Römer square. The spaetzle are delicious, and I had very friendly service. Of course (no offense intended), tourist prices, but really delicious.

We stop on a rainy day for a cofee.The waitress was rise herr voice when we ask"What kind of coffe they serve?At the end we like to pay with card and the waitress said only cash,we explain that we don't have cash and she rise voice again saying under 25 euro is cash.All this situation creat us a discomfort in front of another customers.She did not inform us that the payment is only cash.Finaly a have to check on my coins to pay my cofee.For this reason I do not recomand this restaurant. Typical tourist restaurant. Beautiful location, right on the Römerberg, but the food came unusually quickly, suggesting pre-cooked food. Fried potatoes without seasoning. First time trying green sauce – it was delicious. First time trying apple wine – it tasted similar to apple cider vinegar. It's a matter of taste, but it was served in a glass with a bain-marie. All in all, a mediocre to less than excellent experience at this restaurant. After complaining, the espresso promised by the manager was not served – no words!

This restaurant caters to unsuspecting tourists: I had, among other things, four half eggs with green sauce and boiled potatoes. The eggs were blue and from the refrigerator, obviously not fresh either. The waitress apologized, but otherwise shrugged their shoulders. I've had better green sauce. We also had Frankfurt ribs. They were more like a piece of smoked pork on the bone, 3 cm thick and lukewarm—not recommended.

They are very rude. Closing time is 11am but they told us they close at 10pm. The wine they served was very bad and they charged us for it first. They told us they only work with cash and also accepted credit cards at the next table. Very bad, I do not recommend it at all, we were definitely not satisfied.

The two of us sat inside, which had a very nice ambiance. The fried potatoes could have been a lot crispier for me, but overall, it was good value for money. We encountered two servers: an extremely friendly and engaging gentleman and a somewhat brusque lady (there's still potential there).

As a lot of restaurantes in germany the service here is awful. They should have a learn about comunication and how to treat customers, try to understand what their need and give a solution, not only be rude and say “you cant”.

After we were seated, we were moved again and sat in a corner. The waitress was very rude to us. We had to wait a long time for the checkout to be taken, only to be told that we would have to come to the counter to do so, which we weren't informed of. The payment process was also very unpleasant, and we were reminded that we hadn't yet left a tip. Overall, we felt very uncomfortable...

A beautiful building in a perfect location on the square. We've never experienced such poor and rude service in all our travels. We wanted to eat and drink there, but it ended with just drinks. The sourpuss who was supposed to be serving our table threw the menus on the table and disappeared. After 10 minutes, she returned to take our order. We were actually done with it, but anyway, we ordered a drink and the menus disappeared with an angry look on their faces. After finishing our drinks, we asked for the bill and indicated we wanted to pay by card. She said that wasn't possible; we didn't want to argue, but the table next to us and behind us could still pay by card. When we were paying, she didn't have enough change, and we had to ask for 10 cents back. We waited another 10 minutes for that. The 10 cents were thrown on the table, and we left. Auf Wiedersehen.

We stopped here for lunch at Römerberg and wanted to sample the culinary highlights of the Frankfurt region. I had schnitzel with green sauce and fried potatoes, preceded by Handkäse mit Musik (Hand Cheese with Music) – all very tasty and filling. We were definitely full afterward. The interior is rustic but has a certain charm – very nice. The restrooms are very clean despite the crowds. One star deducted for the service. Two servers are definitely far too few here!

This is the best place in Frankfurt!!!!! And it's true!!!! Here you will get exactly what you expect!!!! No stress!!!! Very tasty cuisine! Very large menu! Special thanks to the owner Brenda! Brenda! For the city of Frankfurt (we all know that the city is not ideal because it is big and there are a lot of migrants...) this restaurant is like an oasis in the desert!!!!!! Thank you very much!!!!

It's blatantly cash-only drinks, and the elderly lady staff is rude (she practically throws your drink down). There's not much difference, so go somewhere else.

Disgusting attitude towards foreigners. They wouldn't let me pay with a card. I guess it's because I had a beer and charged my phone a bit, I don't know. They talk very nicely and cheerfully with Germans, but Asians and Middle Easterners have no trace of this attitude. Thank goodness I charged a beer to earn money for a meal. It wouldn't have kept me up at night, so be more careful, please, but the place is nice.

We sat at wet tables, no one came to wipe. A miserable woman finally brought menus which she threw on our wet table, without any smile or greeting. 15 minutes later she came back to take our order, still not smiling, no customer service whatsoever. Once our order was taken she informed us it was cash only, we queried this as we only had card, to which she tutted and threw her hands up in a proper strop style. Needless to say we got up and left to revisit a bar across the square, Alten Limpurg, where one is always greeted as an old friend. We would not recommend this place and really cannot understand why it is ever busy.

Go on a day when she's not there and it may be a 'fun place to be'. There are many other establishments to visit.

Outside seating was great. Great service when we went. Goulash was great and so was Zweibel Schnitzel.

Unfortunately, I can only give 1 star. We ordered a Schöfferhofer Kristallweizen (0.5 l for €4.80), a Rapp’s orange juice (0.4 l for €5.50), and a Selters still water (0.75 l for €7.20). The total should have been €17.50, but we were charged €22.20 — and this was without any service fee included. I even left a €2 tip. Since I only realized the overcharge later, I didn’t get the chance to go back and talk to them. It may seem like a small issue, but for us as tourists, it was a disappointing and unpleasant experience.

The place is unfriendly. At around noon we wanted to come inside for drinks and were asked if we are going to eat. We just had breakfast, so the clear answer was “no”. We were asked to leave and proposed outside seating in rain as clearly there was no dru spots. I understand business, but it was rather the way it was said. Simply the lady threw the sentence and turned around and left.

I had the pleasure of dining at Zum Standesämtchen as my very first meal upon arriving in Frankfurt, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my trip. Sitting on the outdoor terrace, I was able to enjoy my meal while taking in the beautiful view of the historic Römer buildings and the charming old town atmosphere. It was like having a front-row seat to Frankfurt’s most iconic landmark. The service was friendly and efficient, which made the experience even more enjoyable, especially after a long flight. The staff were welcoming and attentive without being intrusive, and they happily recommended some of the restaurant’s signature dishes. Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying their famous pork knuckle, and it did not disappoint. The skin was perfectly crispy while the meat inside remained tender, juicy, and full of rich flavor. It was served with traditional sides that complemented the dish wonderfully, including sauerkraut and hearty mashed potatoes. Every bite was comforting and satisfying — exactly what I needed to warm up and settle in after arriving. Beyond the food itself, what made the experience extra special was the unique ambiance. The most impatient and outright rude service I've experienced in Europe. The waitress raised her voice at one of us, simply because they attempted to order a glass of wine. I can understand that it was at the end of a long, hot summer day, but such aggression is never ok. Other waiting staff seemed ok. The food arrived quickly and was fine, but the visit was spoiled by the atmosphere the member of staff created. Would not recommend, unfortunately.

Nice restaurant on the Römerberg with a great outdoor area including a view of the Justice Fountain and the Römer. Food is really tasty and service is friendly.

Quite unfriendly waitress, not even allowing time to translate the menu to my friends who do not speak german, with the excuse that kitchen was closing. After us, some orders were still taken on other, so we could have had a couple of minutes more. I will not repeat there.

A super nice restaurant right next to the Römer. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. Oh, and the food. The food was great. The price-performance ratio is also great. I definitely recommend it!

We enjoyed their famous knuckles and beer on the terrace at Rainy Square.

The food arrived super quickly, but it was average. Nothing that would blow you away. The schnitzels were pre-cooked and were simply warmed up, and the fried potatoes... well... When ordering drinks, they didn't ask for a large or small size, and the waitresses seemed super annoyed and stressed. The ambiance, however, was nice.
