Zum Gustl in München

Caution: A longer review follows, but if you're looking for a wedding venue, you should read it. My wife and I had the privilege of getting married in church at Gut Freiham in mid-August, and it was the best day of our lives. The venue is fantastic, and the staff are amazing. The "dance floor" hall seats 60 guests and is beautifully brightly furnished and decorated, and the covered balcony lounge provided guests with a place to retreat to the fresh air throughout the wedding. The estate also has a small church for about 50 people. Although small, the church is decorated with a great deal of art and marble, making it a true contender with more elegant churches. The beautifully decorated village square in front of the Augustiner Brewery and the estate stables provided a wonderful setting for group photos and congratulations. The banquet manager Katharina Unden made our dream of having an extensive photo shoot on site possible. We were able to use not only the village square but also the castle park, which resulted in some incredibly beautiful photos. Since my wife also rides, I asked if we could take photos in the estate stables, which have been incredibly beautifully restored, perhaps with one of the beautiful black cold-blooded horses from the Augustiner Brewery, and Katharina made that possible. We were even happier when we found out from Ingrid, the horsewoman who accompanied us throughout the photo shoot, that we were the first couple to do this and that it was wonderful for her too. My wife couldn't stop beaming. Katharina made us feel right up until midnight that she really wanted this to be our dream day. When the train of my wife's wedding dress came loose late in the evening and no one could fix it properly, Katharina was there and magically put everything on the wedding dress back in place, ready to dance. We are so grateful to have had Katharina by our side that day. The waiters who accompanied us throughout the afternoon and evening immediately became guest favorites. Saki created such a comfortable atmosphere with incredible warmth and a great sense of humor, while Steffi looked after our guests with loving, almost motherly care. The two were so friendly and exuded such a relaxed serenity, which quickly relieved a lot of stress for us as a bride and groom. The guests felt exceptionally comfortable and well-cared for; it felt like a real family atmosphere. We were absolutely thrilled with them. The food was also wonderful; we highly recommend it. The guests were thrilled with all three courses. The chefs here definitely know their craft. (If I had enough characters, I would go into detail about the individual courses here, but Google is putting a stop to that.) Another wonderful thing that rounded off the wedding beautifully was the Augustiner Brewery's good relationship with the Augustinian monks from Maria Eich in Planegg. This made organizing the wedding significantly easier, and the Augustinian monk, Father Christian, conducted a beautiful ceremony that even our non-Christian guests found very emotional and touching. There's also something very nice about being married by an Augustinian monk near Munich, the heart of the Augustiner Brewery. Whether it's for a wedding or simply a visit for an Augustiner Dunkel and a Munich-style schnitzel, we can only recommend the Gustl or Gut Freiham unconditionally. Our meal was, like the prices, well-salted... The ambiance is nice, the food "okay" but nothing special, and the portions are also large.

Great food and very friendly service!! I remember the building/storage area from back in the day, and what the foundation has done with it is absolutely fantastic! A truly beautiful inn with a very high-quality interior. Not to mention the outdoor children's playground – phenomenal. Best regards 👍🏻

Lunch in the beer garden today: 11:40 a.m., bright sunshine, plenty of free tables. Sounds like a relaxing lunch, right? Wrong thought! "Everything reserved," they said. Exception: communal table or self-service area. Two free seats opposite each other at the communal table? – Perfect for a chat over dinner? No, absolutely not! The waitress insisted that we sit next to each other to make room for other guests who – surprise – never showed up. Meanwhile, half the beer garden remained empty, presumably so the reserved chairs wouldn't get overused. After dinner, I mentioned it: "All tables are reserved," I was told, while the seats behind her remained gapingly empty. A hint that the tables might not be needed until 1:00 p.m. would have been too easy. Conclusion: If you like solving puzzles about seating arrangements, practicing the discipline of "eating next to each other," or want to admire the art of empty tables, this is the place for you. For everyone else: self-service – or go somewhere else.

The cheapest vegetarian dish is more expensive than two-thirds of the meat menu. In the beer garden, despite free tables, you're seated at a table with eight strangers, and you have to sit next to each other. Kaspressknödel: a quarter portion at full price. Never again. It started strong and faded brilliantly.

The ambiance is very nice, and the food was okay, but very nicely presented. Unfortunately, you have to wait quite a long time to order food. I accidentally ordered sparkling water for a child. I asked if I could exchange it. The answer was no, but the server wanted to add salt to my sparkling water, which would also dissolve the carbonation. I politely declined and went back to the back of the line to order still water... The kids still had fun, and the playground is very nice.

Delicious beer, great food, and a playground for children make for a thoroughly enjoyable visit. The quiet location perfectly rounds off the experience – highly recommended!

A great Augustiner inn with flair. A small, cozy bar right by the entrance. Several rooms of varying sizes invite you to linger. Authentic prices: "Gustl-Pfanne" (veal "Pflanzerl" with Nuremberg sausages, roast pork & potato salad) €13.28 Mock roast mixed with suckling pig with potato dumplings €15.16 -> The (beer) connoisseur knows what to do with this vintage :) Augustiner fresh and ice-cold from the tap - a dream.

Very nice inn! First time seeing anything like it.

I just wanted to warn all guests about the red cabbage! My cheese dumplings were no longer edible because of it! Underneath the dumplings was an inedible mess of overcooked, mushy, overly sweet canned cabbage. Who was the chef seasoning it? Thank goodness I was able to neutralize the taste with three draft beers. The stars are only for the friendly service.

Very professionally organized, pleasant service, and the food was excellent. The renovation of the estate was exceptionally successful.

The location is very nice, and there are plenty of parking spaces. The beer garden also has a great children's playground. It gets packed on weekends. Unfortunately, the seating area is separated from the playground, so you can't really keep an eye on the kids, which makes it a bit tense. The beer garden has a waitress area and a self-service area. The drink selection is somewhat limited. They only serve 0.5L drinks each.

The food selection in the beer garden is very limited, very minimalist. Although the restaurant is right next door and we wanted to pick up the food ourselves, orders aren't accepted in the restaurant. And you can't get a table in the waiting area either.

Beautifully renovated property! Thanks also to the Augustiner Brewery, whose projects are consistently executed very successfully! One criticism goes to the inn. Please make the sauce for the roast pork yourself! These ready-made sauces from a can are simply disgusting, full of chemicals, and far too salty! I really should have returned the roast pork. For me, that's another reason not to come back.

The location is truly worth seeing. The entire building complex, in particular, has been renovated and refurbished with so much love and attention to detail. The beer garden was well attended, and without a reservation, you'd be lucky to get a seat. I find the prices unusually reasonable for these days. The quality of the food was absolutely top-notch, and there was nothing that could be improved. There's also a lovely playground for the little ones. We'd love to come back and spend a few hours in the beer garden.

We were in the beer garden, so it's hard to say anything about the service. The food was delicious. The line at the counter is sometimes quite long, and you can only read the menu and choose something once you're at the front, so you have to be quick. It would be cool if the menu was also posted so you could look at it beforehand. The beer garden itself is super pretty.

A cozy beer garden with friendly service, fair prices, and a lovingly designed playground – ideal for families. The children's portions were also generous. Unfortunately, the food could have been better: the sirloin steak was riddled with tendons, and the potatoes tasted like they came from a jar – watery and unloved. It's a shame, because they can do better, right? Positive: Easy to reach by bike, car, and S-Bahn (S8). Plenty of parking and even a charging station – although unfortunately, it can only be accessed via QR code; common charging cards don't work. And: The beer garden closes at 10 p.m. – a bit early for a summer evening. Nevertheless: We'll definitely be back! I think the beer garden can do better – and with a little more love in the kitchen, this place would be really good.

A completely renovated historic estate with a beer garden, restaurant, and numerous event spaces. Right next door is the castle with its beautifully maintained park. The entire complex was stylishly and painstakingly restored to top condition by the owners of the Augustiner Brewery. A very pleasant atmosphere (away from the hustle and bustle of Munich's beer gardens) in a small hamlet, but easily accessible by bike. If necessary, pack your bike on the S-Bahn, get off in Freiham, and cycle there in 10 minutes. Good food; motivated staff.

Very nice restaurant. We had three kinds of Obatzda (a kind of Austrian gravy) – it was absolutely delicious, the Augustiner beer was also excellent, and the staff was fantastic – as they say in Prussia. The foundation building is also in a very idyllic setting. It was an all-around wonderful evening.

A great place with Augusteriner and Augustiner non-alcoholic on tap—it's worth a visit alone. But the roast pork and steak tartare are also extremely good and offer fantastic value for money! The kids' menu is especially great! Delicious dishes at fair prices. But you should always make a reservation in advance to ensure you get a seat!

Always a busy place and hard to find reservations for the restaurant. Food variety is very limited at the biergarten. You have some more alternatives at the restaurant but still somewhat limited. Being recently restored, it has great atmosphere. An outside playground is available if you have children.

A rustic inn with honest food and relaxed, yet super friendly service. Highly recommended – the pork knuckle with a crispy crust and juicy meat. We were there five years ago and it was just as good. You can even help yourself to a homemade schnapps to finish off the meal. Excellent value for money!

Yes and no. 😉. Superbly renovated. Another great beer garden, the old-school style. With local guests and no tourists. With local dishes (I judge the quality by the Bavarian-fresh sausage salad... and it was great) and great beer. I'm not Bavarian, but I went to Bavaria with my parents and grandparents 60 years ago. I was hoping for Saures Lungerl (a kind of sausage), but it was the wrong time of year. I'm very disappointed with Bavarian restaurants. Everything is geared towards tourists and mainstream. Things were different 20 years ago. Times change, but I'm glad that oases like this still exist. So yes and no, I'm happy to give it a good review, but I'd be happy if it remained an oasis.

The restaurant is particularly racist towards foreigners and people of color. No respect for people. The waitress assigned us a table and then decided to give it to a German family. Tips come from the waitress, and such poor service convinced me I'll never return.

We came here based on a recommendation. Well, Augustiner has breathed new life into an extraordinary property. Everything has a very traditional, Bavarian feel. The spacious, diverse dining rooms are beautifully designed and tastefully renovated. Everything is very cozy and well-crafted. Our chosen dishes were of excellent quality, impeccable in both appearance and taste. A freshly tapped Augustiner beer on tap rounded off the dining experience. We'd love to come back!

I'll start with the positive: Beautiful, clean rooms in a modern country-house style, unfussy and appealing. The first disappointment came when we sat down – why such small chairs?! I wear a size 36 and still felt like I was sliding off the chairs to the left and right; comfortable is something else entirely. We were less than impressed with the service. It started in the entrance area, where we were greeted by two employees who were openly bickering with each other. This impression continued throughout the entire evening. The service was barracks-like, everything took forever, and then our menus were taken from our hands before we could even order… impossible. It took almost 60 minutes before we could finally place our orders. The food was okay, but nothing remarkable. For the price, I expect homemade products and not convenience potato nuggets. Too bad.

Dear team at Stiftunghaus zum Gustl, We would like to express our complaint about our last visit to your establishment, which we will unfortunately remember as very negative. We had reserved a table through OpenTable – unfortunately, there is no way to indicate whether we were bringing children or a stroller. We were all the more surprised and, above all, disconcerted when we were greeted upon arrival, clearly yelled at for our stroller, as it was supposedly not registered. What followed was, unfortunately, a thoroughly unpleasant stay, characterized by extreme unfriendliness towards children, the likes of which we have never experienced in a restaurant before. The service was consistently unfriendly and repeatedly made us feel as if we were not welcome – mainly due to the noise level of our children. Such an attitude towards families is absolutely disappointing. We were not offered children's menus on our own initiative; we had to specifically request them. The service overall was characterized by an inappropriately harsh approach – among other things, a plate of sauce was slammed down so heavily that parts of it landed on the table. There was no apology. In the end, we were even asked to dispose of an empty baby food jar ourselves – a procedure that is simply inappropriate in a restaurant of this category. While we would like to acknowledge that your establishment has a truly beautiful children's playground, this unfortunately doesn't help in this specific situation when the general attitude towards families with children is so negative. We are also particularly disappointed that we had actually planned to host a private celebration at your establishment. After this experience, however, it is clear to us that we will definitely hold this celebration at another, more family-friendly venue. It is sad and shocking how unwelcome children – a central part of our society – seem to be at your establishment. Especially in a traditional inn, hospitality should be a given, even for families. We sincerely hope that you take this feedback seriously and urge you to reconsider your attitude towards families.

We've been there a few times now. When it's not busy, it's self-service. The beer is good, and the estate is being restored to its original condition. Very nice.

Seven of us went there for the first time on Sunday. It was very crowded and accordingly loud. The waitress seemed completely overwhelmed. The wine spritzer arrived in a carafe, but without a glass. The apple juice spritzers, ordered with carbonation, arrived with still water. The dishes took a very long time to arrive and were unfortunately incomplete. So, fries were brought later, about 15 minutes after the meat. Another 10 minutes later, ketchup and mayo arrived. The veal schnitzel was two stringy little pieces, not what you'd expect. The sirloin steak looked great, but was more laced with tendons than tasty. The boiled beef was apparently forgotten, so one person at the table watched the others eat for 20 minutes before receiving their dish. Conclusion: we won't be coming back.

We celebrated our civil wedding at the Gasthaus Zum Gustl and were satisfied from start to finish. Planning with Kathi was super uncomplicated. The day and evening were also great, the service was wonderful and the food was delicious. Both we and our guests were very happy. The children received an extra menu with children's meals and our dog was also welcome. Many thanks to the entire team! :)

Review 2024: Very unfortunate. The food is good, the surroundings with the old estate are fantastic, the building has been lovingly restored. But the organization of the beer garden is one of the worst things I have experienced in Munich. First of all, the number of tables is completely inadequate for the large crowd; A third of the available space is not equipped with tables. The main annoyance, however, is the extremely poor organization of the food and drink distribution. While one waitress takes the order and pays, three other employees stand by and are bored. Each beer is passed individually through the window, and the buzzer for my food didn't work either. All the processes seem so incredibly complicated, tedious and soporific. I wasn't alone with this impression: several customers who were standing in line with me also expressed incomprehension about the unacceptable waiting times. Others didn't even want to get in line. Why is there no service on site? It's also bad for the restaurant if customers don't reorder because that means another 20 minutes in line. Aside from the inefficiencies, the friendliness is also not particularly good. The lady who took the order was very friendly, but unfortunately the rest were not. In short: a beer garden with great potential, which needs to be exploited first. In its current form I have to advise my friends not to visit here. Update 2025: Confirmation of the 2 stars, because the service is unfortunately not courteous even in the context of the very laudable lunch menu (“Quick Plate”). As a lunch guest who has just escaped from the office and wants to eat in peace, you are “invited” to sit down at a table that is already packed with noisy strangers, even though there are several huge tables free and lunch only lasts about 15 minutes. This is not how you make yourself popular with your customers. It's a shame, because the food still tastes great, the ambience is great, and there are a lot of friendly waitresses.

If it were possible, 0 stars would be appropriate for the service because guests' concerns about allergens are not taken seriously. I have a severe gluten allergy and two dishes were recommended to me that contain gluten. Unfortunately, since I trusted the waiter's knowledge, I ordered the dish and then had to live with the consequences. I've never experienced anything like this before and have to strongly advise anyone who has a serious allergy not to visit the restaurant!! Less consideration for guests' concerns is not possible!!

We've been here probably 10 - 15 times in the last 1.5 years. We were always served in a very friendly and service-oriented manner. The food is super tasty and the portions are so large that we are always full. Even in the summer in the beer garden, when there is a lot going on, we were served quickly and nicely. Sure, the employees only have two hands, but they do what they can and so far we've always had a good time, been given a place and something to drink and eat

The inn is beautifully renovated and nicely decorated. Unfortunately it was quite loud in the dining room, made easier by the many hard surfaces. The selection of dishes is clear, everyone should find something. I had the roast pork and it tasted good, but the portion size was quite manageable. The piece of suckling pig was more crust than meat and the piece of pork shoulder was cut paper thin. The two dumplings were barely the size of a golf ball. Unfortunately, I wasn't entirely convinced.

The renovation there and the investments on site were really worth it. I'm excited to see what else is to come. About 10 minutes on foot from the Freiham Sbahn stop. I'll definitely come back.
