Unfriendly service, great atmosphere, food ok. If the service was different it would be really nice. I thought something had changed. But we really don't need stupid comments from service. We haven't been here in 20 years. Was a good decision! I’ll have to think about whether we’ll come back in 20 years….

It has taken us a long time to serve. Bad faces. The sausages were very small and bland. The knuckle poorly cooked and raw. They have not served me the glass of wine that I have ordered three times. It took them half an hour to get the bill. In short, not to return and not recommend it at all.

The food and the ambience were quite good. Unfortunately, one service employee in particular was very unfriendly and short-tempered. Not guest oriented.

Arrival & first impression We arrived by public transport, which was absolutely uncomplicated. The stop was just a few minutes' walk away - perfect for a relaxed start. From the outside, the “Zum Gemalten Haus” looked pretty, but also a bit inconspicuous. To be honest, I didn't have too many expectations. And then – the wow factor: As soon as you step through the door and the small tunnel, a completely different world opens up! Much bigger, livelier and more atmospheric than expected. Seating & ambience There are numerous spaces both outside and inside. Particularly nice: the outdoor spaces are permanently covered or can be covered if necessary - a huge plus in changeable weather! We sat outside and it was just really pleasant - lively but not too loud, cozy and with a certain rustic charm that really invites you to stay longer. We hadn't made a reservation and were seated two at a table for four - with the advice that two more people could possibly join us. For us this was completely fine and felt relaxed and uncomplicated. Food & Service We usually avoid classic German cuisine when traveling because we like to try new things. But here we were taught otherwise: The schnitzel with green sauce was an absolute highlight! We didn't know this combination from home and were thrilled - the sauce was fresh, herbal, perfectly balanced and the schnitzel was wonderfully crispy and juicy. A really round, delicious dish! Despite the very well-filled tables, the service was consistently friendly, attentive and surprisingly quick - both when taking the order and when serving. Here you can see that the team is well-coordinated and keeps an overview despite the hustle and bustle. Personal impression I didn't know exactly what to expect - but this lively, warm atmosphere immediately won me over. The “Painted House” exudes a real hospitality that you cannot find everywhere. It's uncomplicated, cheerful and honest - without a lot of chichi, but with even more heart. I would come back any time!

Normally you can eat very well there but today I wasn't satisfied!! I had to wait a long time for my food, my partner finished her food long ago. When my ribs came it was lukewarm and very fatty even though I had ordered a lean one

Even though a lot of things are geared towards tourists, you can still go here as a Saxon resident. As always, the restaurant was well attended, which speaks for itself, large portions, nice service. For me and my visitors, the first point of contact.

Special experience, this restaurant is so long that you almost get lost! Nice seating areas and a special German atmosphere. The menu includes beef, pork and vegetarian. The Frankfurter green sauce is an absolute must to have!

I like to come here when Eintracht plays in the Waldstadion afterwards. A lot of fans gather here and enjoy the Ebbelwoi with lazy people and typical Frankfurt dishes with lots of sauerkraut.

Legendary Hessian apple wine tavern with very good handkäs, really tasty green sauce, creamy spundekäs and very good ribs. The vegetarian schnitzel is also very tasty. Overall, a classic Hessian experience, attentive service, perfect!

We were there yesterday. Very restless atmosphere. Just hustle and bustle even though it wasn't that crowded. Unfriendly service with stupid sayings and bet you don't tip enough, after all you are a service provider. I also work in the service industry but saying things like that just doesn't work. The food was very tasty and I thought it was a good value for money. It's a typical inn with a large outdoor terrace.

Food was good, reasonably priced but the service was a disgrace. Hectic, stressful, quick-tempered and provocative. Stupid sayings included. The tip, which was not generous, was rejected with the reference to "We don't accept such alms." Rarely have I had such a bad experience. It's a shame because the food was really okay. No recommendation.

I stopped by today on my way for an Äppler (apple) and a Handkäse (cheese) with music. The Handkäse was exactly my cup of tea, a bit sour, but as I said, exactly my cup of tea. The service was also friendly and approachable at all times. I'd be happy to come back.

We reserved a table at the "Painted House" yesterday to enjoy traditional Frankfurt cuisine. The evening started slowly, as it took about 30 minutes for someone to come to our table and even take a drink order. We immediately ordered a 16-liter "Bembel" (a German beer), which fortunately lasted us for the rest of the evening. There was significantly less time between ordering drinks and ordering food, but we did wait an hour and a half for our food. When the food finally arrived, there were 10 minutes between the first and last dishes arriving at the table. For me, that's an absolute no-go when dining together. To make matters worse, one dish was forgotten, which made eating together completely impossible. By the time the missing dish arrived, the first people at the table had finished. Just to make things worse: there were six of us – so not a huge group... The apple wine and the green sauce were truly outstanding, and a small consolation for a truly ruined evening. The food (schnitzel, Frankfurter platter) was also delicious, but the organization, the long wait, and the ambiance itself really disappointed us and put us off our appetite. The table in the far corner, with no air flow, wasn't ideal either. It was quite stuffy and warm, which also bothered the neighboring table. In the end, they took two sparkling waters off our bill as an apology, which, in my opinion, wouldn't have changed the situation in any way—after all, we spent almost €200 there. Overall, I was really disappointed and couldn't enjoy the food, which was undoubtedly of good quality and delicious. The good apple wine at least made the evening bearable—especially after the long wait.

Terrible experience. If you don’t speak German, expect rude treatment. They deliberately changed our table to a worse spot, even though the place had plenty of empty places and had no reservation issues. The staff acted arrogant, trying to “teach” us things instead of offering proper service. On top of that, they even asked about our nationality in a way that felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming. If you’re an expat living in Germany or a tourist visiting, do yourself a favor and skip this place. There are plenty of German restaurants with better service that don’t discriminate. It’s 2025 and we are still facing these type of people that treat differently based on language or nationality, such a shame…

Great apple winery in Sachsenhausen. I like the atmosphere, especially before Eintracht home games. The Frankfurter Schnitzel and the pint that goes with it taste great and the service is also good. I always enjoy coming back.

No reservation possible for two people and not required according to the website. When we got there we were told quite rudely that there were no seats available without a reservation. Particularly annoying because we drove to Frankfurt specifically for this reason.

It's very, very outrageous that a schnitzel restaurant doesn't have any more schnitzel in stock. Should we use Mrs. Schreiber's toenails or something like that? I'm sorry, but I don't think it's ok.

Some co-workers from Frankfurt took us to dinner because we wanted to have dinner in a typical German restaurant. It is a very spacious place. When we arrived there was a lot of atmosphere because they were watching a football game on a giant screen. They served us very quickly. We really liked both the food and the desserts. The Apfelstrudel was spectacular.

A very quaint restaurant. My wife liked the hand cheese, and a special highlight for us was the goulash soup. The veal and pork schnitzels were also very good, I also thought the green sauce was great, tasty and refreshing. Unfortunately we weren't happy with the fried potatoes, some of them weren't cooked through. The prices were perhaps a bit high, but overall still reasonable.

Food was normally good in Frankfurt terms. But you're not allowed to play cards? What does that mean? A middle-class restaurant where playing cards is forbidden? That doesn't work at all. The waiter was also very unfriendly when we were told this. Otherwise the food and atmosphere are good.

A very nicely decorated restaurant. One of the most beautiful cider farms. The food is manageable, traditional Hessian cuisine. The veal schnitzel was perfectly fried, the crust was very crispy and the meat was juicy. The green sauce is fresh and delicious. I was a little disappointed with the fried potatoes, which could have been fried a little longer. The service was very nice. The price was a little more expensive but the quality was very good. The food came quickly too. I think if there had been more going on we would have waited a little longer.

The three of us had dinner at the Painted House on February 14, 2025 around 5 p.m. The food was delicious as always. Only the service was a flop. We were served outside by an Italian-looking waiter. When we first ordered a drink, this waiter asked us whether it would always take us so long. We went through the drinks list as normal. When I ordered the second drink he turned his back to me and said he would listen to me. At the next table he could kiss the asses of the regular customers and we had to listen to stupid jokes. You can have a bad day, but you should definitely be professional towards your guests. In my opinion he failed in his job. For this reason we didn't tip for the first time.

Super nice experience! A real tavern, frequented by real locals. Typical food, without any fuss! Very good portion, good price. Excellent apple cider by the glass, courteous, fast and friendly service! I got a response in English and very quickly! I recommend for a typical experience!

Every time I'm in Frankfurt I go to Gemaltes Haus to eat Grüne Sauce. Never disappoints.

The Good Friday fish was excellent! Potato salad is awesome. And after almost 40 days, finally Schoppe again. Life can be so beautiful!

I visited to have dinner with someone who lives in Germany for the first time in several years. It was a popular restaurant so it was crowded, but the food was brought to us without too much of a wait. Since some of us were visiting Germany for the first time, we ordered everything from apple wine to beer, and tongue, which was a little surprising in size. The road in front of the store was under construction and the signboard was difficult to see, so I might need to be careful for the time being.

I'm a einbein fan. this shop serves einsbein which doesn't have any fishy smell from pork at all. compare to any other restaurants, I do believe you will like the traditional germany restaurant in this shop. Don't miss it out.

The food was good, the schnitzel and green sauce were very tasty, the fried potatoes were unfortunately cold and burnt and tasteless, which was a bit inappropriate. The father-daughter team in the service was nice but very friendly to the guest, but what was annoying was the father reprimanding the daughter The daughter doesn't accept it but uses gestures to say that she would rather strangle him. That can be clarified behind the scenes and not in front of the guest

TERRIBLE, horrible treatment. IF YOU ARE NOT GERMAN THEY WILL NOT ATTEND YOU. No one came to serve us, we called the waiter several times to take our order and no one came. After a long time they came to take our drinks, they told us that another waiter would come to take our food. Waiting for more than half an hour and no one came, until finally the same waiter came because the rest did not come to serve us. The food was average, we tried a sausage and it wasn't very tasty. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

Typical German cuisine with the meals served really quickly. However later on it was impossible to get a waiter to pay attention to us and request a bill.

Rustic cider restaurant with a long tradition.

Quaint and rustic Frankfurt apple wine bar. Food absolutely ok, although not a culinary highlight but significantly better than in other apple wine bars in Sachsenhausen. What is off-putting, however, is the obviously bored and unfriendly manner of the service staff. In the outdoor area, which is heated, the greatest interest is that no guest should sit outside and disappear directly into the indoor area. Inside, the cellars are equally unhelpful; you have to slalom yourself and lie in wait to get a spot. That makes it very unsympathetic. You can clearly see that the number of passing customers is very high due to the many tourists, otherwise you would certainly be more dependent on new customers.

It is somewhat confusing because it has two vines with two different names. Traditional place with a very affordable price and great food with generous portions. The typical cider is served in large glasses. It is very large and reservations are not necessary.

Yesterday evening we were in the Äbbelwoi location “Zum maltenen Haus” for the first time and, first of all, it will probably have been the last time. The two stars for the food are only because my two colleagues liked the schnitzel. But first things first. At the beginning the welcome was friendly, we were quickly taken to a table, the menus were quickly there and the order was taken. At this point the place wasn't full. Nevertheless, the food was delivered incorrectly across the tables, in our case, ribs mixed with puree and cabbage were ordered twice, but they were served lean, without puree. The service employee was made aware that something was wrong or missing. And at the latest when another service person was there with the right food, the service should have understood the mistake. A good option would have been to give us the right food we ordered, take the wrong one back with us and tell the table that the food wasn't brought to us "we're sorry, it'll take a while" but we have our real food quickly disappeared again, left the other table to wait, without comment, and just told us that the missing puree would still come. That also happened when we had long since finished eating and then, once tried, it went back again. Service technically, completely failed. Likewise, in the end they didn't even dare to come to our table and wanted to have the bill paid as quickly as possible. But now to the food. As already mentioned, the schnitzels seemed to be good, as was the cider. The lean rib was dry and lightly seasoned. The cabbage was OK and the puree, which was delivered late, had the appearance of a bag of puree that potatoes had passed by at most. The Frankfurt rib was therefore a 0/10, simply not tasty. You can't shake the feeling that quantity rather than class is the motto. I have experienced this better in many other Äbbelwoi pubs in the immediate area. The ambience is that of a classic Äbbelwoi pub and is also good. If you just come here to drink, I think that's fine.

A wonderful place, very typical German. Susan was very friendly and asked us if we wanted to share a table with two neighbors from Frankfurt...(Very common action in Germany) Obviously we said yes... We spent a wonderful night with Eckhad and Elmar...hahahaha

Very nice place. Absolute must if you want to experience “Hessian culture”. The restaurant offers everything you could want from a cider restaurant. The prices are also very humane. When we visited, the meat sausage with sauerkraut and the fried potatoes with green sauce were a bit lukewarm. Hence a star deduction. Nevertheless, an absolute recommendation and we will definitely come back. Must try: The “salmon bread” with pollack. You can hardly find something like this anywhere anymore and it tastes great.

We always like to stop there. This time we had ribs with cabbage.

The food is good, the selection is manageable but sufficient. The portions were quite generous, I couldn't finish everything. The service is extremely friendly and attentive. The decor is rustic and appropriate for a cider restaurant. WiFi is available. All in all a good location.

It was an all-round lovely evening with delicious food, friendly & attentive service! There were three of us and we ordered across the menu, everyone was happy. A great traditional Frankfurt cuisine. We can't understand the negative comments at all.

We loved the food and the atmosphere, it seems to be a typical place in the region. The bad thing is that we didn't know that we had to be German to be well received, we saw how the waiter joked and was very nice to the rest of the diners. With us, since we arrived, the hostile attitude was noticeable, he did not seem to want to serve us and when we spoke to him to be able to order more, he asked us for a minute and never returned, we just watched him pass by all the tables talking and joking, and he just ignored us to us. Unfortunately, the schnitzel was warmed up, very thin and dripping with fat, as were the fried potatoes. The sauerkraut was so acidified with cheap table vinegar that it was inedible - why do that? Guests would like to eat sauerkraut and not pickled cabbage. The portions were also quite small for the price. A positive highlight is the farmer's bread, which really tasted excellent - in contrast to the bread with grains, which was not convincing. Overall, there is a lot that could be improved here...

However, the service was particularly disappointing: When we politely asked how long the meal would take, the waitress reacted unfriendly and made fun of us for being impatient. Additionally, the goulash came a full 20 minutes later than the rest of the meal. The store looks like a typical tourist trap - lots of appearances, little quality. Unfortunately, the traditional Hessian flair that you would expect here is completely missing. Overall a big disappointment.

Outrageous, waited 15 minutes for drinks to be taken. I ordered a beer, the answer was "we're in Frankfurt, we don't have that here" and I didn't ask if I wanted something else but asked the next person. Shameful because there was wheat on a neighboring table. Twice there, twice such treatment, thank you, but there won't be a third time here.
