I came here to try Frankfurt green sauce and apple wine. The place has that old German look and feels traditional. The food was mostly good, and I enjoyed the flavor of the green sauce. The potatoes were cooked perfectly. However, the eggs were so overcooked that the yolks had turned gray. The waiters were extremely surly. I was not greeted when I entered. They pointed to a table and I sat. They put the menu in front of me and when they came back to take my order said nothing, just stood next to the table. My food arrived in literally three minutes after I ordered. When I later signaled for the check, the waiter sat the bill on the table and took my cash. He never addressed me once or asked about my meal. I left and said thank you, and it was not returned. I felt unwelcome.

The waiters, especially the older ones, are absolutely awful. I've rarely seen anything like that. The only nice waiter is the South American one. Otherwise, the place is cool and the food is pretty good.

The food was excellent, as was the service. The food was very good, and served fairly quickly after ordering. I really liked the rustic ambiance. I had the goulash soup, the ribs with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, an apple wine, and an apple wine rosé. The prices were reasonable, and the portions were quite generous. A great restaurant with Hessian and German cuisine, very hearty. The ambiance is rustic and cozy. Card payments are accepted.

We were guests at the gemaltes Haus on Friday, June 20, 2025 – one of the most beautiful apple wine taverns in Frankfurt and, in my opinion, the best handkäs mit Musik (traditional cheese with music) I've ever enjoyed in Frankfurt. The gemaltes Haus is accessible from two streets and offers generous seating both indoors and outdoors. The ground-level entrance makes it completely wheelchair-accessible. We were given a table in a small corner outside, which was truly beautiful, and the old kiln was a real eye-catcher – until the food was served. We ordered the classic Frankfurt schnitzel, one veal, one pork. It was served with a generous portion of fried potatoes and more than enough Grie' sauce. The meat in both schnitzels was incredibly delicious, tender, and perfectly cooked. The portions are truly very fair. The green sauce, as well as the schnitzel, the fried potatoes, and the handkäs (traditional cheese with music), were just as delicious. The 5-pack apple wine (1.5L) was already brought to your table with a sour spritz, but you can also mix it yourself and add bottles of water. At €80 (including tip) for two appetizers (2x Handkäs mit Musik), 2x Frankfurter Schnitzel, 1x Coke, and 1x Äppler, we were completely full, had fun, and had a truly wonderful stay at the Painted House. The wonderful evening was rounded off by the fantastic staff. The Painted House is definitely recommended and a real must-visit on Schweizer Strasse. Happy Eating!

We sat comfortably in the courtyard. The food was good, but nothing exceptional, but the green sauce was amazing. The service was excellent. We'll be back soon.

Traditional Äppelwoi (apple wine) establishment. One of the oldest in Frankfurt. Hip hop, Schoppe in your head! One year later in summer: Beautiful courtyard. Friendly service. We liked it a lot.

Traditional restaurant with good service. The waiter helped us with the menu in English. We ordered the traditional house dish with very tasty cooked cabbage, and the Schnitzel which was very tasty.

While researching where to try the most authentic RIPPCHEN which is a traditional Frankfurt specialty of cured pork chop we came across Zum Gemalten Haus, a well-known and much-loved German restaurant. It didn’t disappoint. When our meals arrived, we were surprised by the generous portions: a hearty pork chop served with a mountain of tangy, flavorful sauerkraut and perfectly creamy mashed potatoes. The combination was comforting, deeply satisfying, and quickly became one of our favorite meals in Frankfurt. The restaurant itself is full of character, decorated in traditional German style with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels genuinely local. We had hoped to sit outside in the smoking section, but the person assigned to that area hadn’t started their shift yet so we stayed in the front outdoor which turned out to be just as pleasant.

I was here about 10 years ago and actually had good memories. Unfortunately, the food has deteriorated considerably. The liverwurst and ribs were very overcooked (the liverwurst crumbled and wasn't creamy), so you need a lot of mustard. Sauerkraut didn't have any pepper, cloves, or anything like that. The black pudding was very good. The service was also good.

A busy cider pub with the usual selection. You get a decent portion for the price. The server was very child-friendly, and we were able to snag a table for five on a holiday evening, even without a reservation. It took a while to take our order, and the staff were busy. We would have ordered more water, but the servers are hard to reach during rush hour. We'll definitely be back.

The staff was rude. We wanted a table for two shortly before 7 p.m. Even though there were several seats available, we were sent from one station to the next. We then found a table that was reserved from 8:30 p.m., meaning it was still free for an hour and 45 minutes. The waiter still refused to give us the table, saying someone would be there soon. We went somewhere else.

This popular local restaurant was bustling with customers. It had a lovely interior with a courtyard, so we were able to relax, and the waitresses were kind and delicious. We had a wonderful time. There are a lot of dishes, so don't order all at once (lol)

Not for vegetarians. The asparagus soup was very bland. The ambiance is okay if you like rustic and loud.

If you are looking for an authentic experience with German food, this is the place to be. The food can be quite good, depending on what you choose, but you can also end up with a bad meal. We ordered the veal schnitzel with fried potatoes and green sauce, as well as the pork chop with mashed potatoes. The veal schnitzel and the green sauce were excellent and I can only recommend it. The pork chop had room for improvement as it was quite salty and dry and the mashed potatoes tasted sour. The service was friendly and fast and the ambiance is pleasant. Try to reserve a table in advance and ask to sit outside. The restaurant has lots of capacity, so you can also come spontaneously, but you might need to sit inside.

The restaurant is in a lovely painted old building, providing a traditional atmosphere also inside. It was quite loud when we arrived around 10pm, so we sat in the outside area in the back. To mention is that many restaurants close the kitchen around 10, while here you can still order later on (I guess until almost 11, when closing time is 12). We ordered the typical Frankfurter Schnitzel and it was very tasty. The portion has the perfect size. Also the vegetarian Schnitzel option tasted good. The price of 20€ is normal/okay. Overall, we had a perfect experience.

Het was niet mogelijk om te reserveren voor minder dan 4 personen. Maar wij mochten wel komen. Zij houden blijkbaar wel enkele tafels vrij voor een groep van 3 personen. Wij kozen voor een typisch Frankfurter gerecht: de Frankfurter Schnitzel met groene saus en gebakken aardappelen. Ook de vegetarische versie hiervan werd besteld. De bestelling was vlot terwijl het nochtans druk was binnen. Blijkbaar een verjaardagspartij met een grote groep. Wij kozen voor de binnenruimte wegens de regen. Het eten was smakelijk en voldoende. Samen met de traditionele Appelwijn was dit onze eerste kennismaking met het typische Frankfurter eten.

It was not possible to make a reservation for less than 4 people. But we were allowed to come. Apparently they do keep a few tables free for a group of 3 people. We chose a typical Frankfurter dish: the Frankfurter Schnitzel with green sauce and fried potatoes. The vegetarian version of this was also ordered. The order was quick, even though it was busy inside. Apparently a birthday party with a large group. We chose the indoor area because of the rain. The food was tasty and sufficient. Together with the traditional Apple Wine, this was our first introduction to typical Frankfurter food.

An institution!!! A piece of culture

It's a typical tourist hotspot. Reservations are recommended. It gets crowded and loud in the evenings.

Unfortunately, I absolutely cannot recommend this painted house for its service or food. The waiter was rude and lackluster, the fried potatoes were tasteless and mushy, and the deep-fried schnitzel and the hand-cheese marinade were also disappointing. Overall, disappointing.

A quaint location with a Frankfurt flair and tavern feel. Friendly and mostly attentive service (we sometimes had to help). The food was plentiful and good. Unfortunately, the noise level is very high. This can be annoying and detracts from the cozy atmosphere.

Das Personal ist sehr freundlich, aber: Die Schweinshaxe roch schlecht und als wir versuchten, sie zu zerlegen, fiel auf, dass sie absolut zäh war, keine Kruste. Anderswo zerfällt die Schweinshaxe in feine Stücke und hat eine leckere Kruste. Der Kartoffelbrei kommt aus der Tüte, das Sauerkraut war völlig fade. Die dann als Ersatz bestellten Nürnberger Bratwürste waren in Ordnung, die Beilagen wie oben beschrieben. Die Bratkartoffeln ohne Biss und Geschmack. Das Ambiente ist schön, aber es ist sehr schade, dass die Küche so schlecht ist

For the 50th anniversary of the Freiherr vom Stein School's OImb high school reunion. Just like 50 years ago, it was a great location. We had a lot of fun and would love to come back. In ?? years, then, DRUFF DABBE!

Came in for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. The place was packed! Staff ignored us. We wondered around seeing if there was a table (which there was). The first staff who spoke to us told us to wait and he’ll be back. Then another staff came over to us and said they were full (even though they had lots of tables full). Super frustrating

A quaint Frankfurt cult pub. Anyone who likes Äppelwoi and is ever in Frankfurt should definitely stop by. The food is truly delicious, and Äppelwoi is available in abundance. Of course, other drinks are also available. Definitely worth a visit.

We ate here for the first time. It was a lovely atmosphere, we had a great time, and the food was delicious. My only complaint was that my asparagus was overcooked and tasted slightly bitter in some places, but otherwise everything was great!

Fui aquí dos veces mientras estaba en Frankfurt. La primera vez que pedí Frankfurter Schnitzel con salsa verde y patatas fritas, cerveza y Apfelwein. La segunda vez pedí Wiener Schnitzel con arándanos, patatas fritas, ensalada y cerveza. Ambas comidas fueron muy buenas, pero mi favorita de las dos fue la segunda. El ambiente era genial. El servicio era bueno también.

I went in search of the curious "apple wine" and among the places that served the drink, this was one of the best rated. Specializing in local cuisine. When you get there, you can choose between tables outside, in the internal garden or in the dining room. The menu is in English and the service is attentive. I ordered a sausage with sour cabbage (there is mustard on the table) and a glass of the wine. What I can say is that the food is very different to the Brazilian palate but it wasn't bad, the sausage had a lot of seasoning and was even slightly spicy. The wine, however, is a peculiarity, it smells like vinegar, has a dry/bitter taste and if it weren't for the apple residue on the palate, it would be undrinkable. Of course, I'm giving my own personal opinion, traveling is about experiencing what the locals consume as part of the cultural immersion. But it's kind of love it or hate it. Of the 16 tables occupied when I was there, EVERYONE was drinking the drink. It was the only place in Germany where beer wasn't the star. Total bill €8.80 (and they have the custom of giving tips there).

A cozy, rustic atmosphere awaits you inside, which immediately invites you to feel good. The furnishings are traditional without appearing old-fashioned - simply authentic and harmonious. But what particularly impressed us was the sensationally friendly and personable service. It is rare to experience such warm and attentive service - honest, committed and with a smile that comes from the heart. You don't just feel like a guest here, but rather a welcome part of Frankfurt's cider culture. The meal was a real highlight: the roast beef with potato dumpling and salad was tender, tasty and perfectly seasoned - a real poem! Likewise the Frankfurter Schnitzel with green sauce and fried potatoes: crispy, fresh and with this incomparable sauce that just leaves you wanting more. The price-performance ratio is excellent - generous portions that are not only filling, but also impress with their quality and taste. Conclusion: If you want to experience real Frankfurt, you can't ignore the Painted House. An institution with heart, taste and history. We will definitely be back – and can only recommend everyone to stop here.

EXTREMELY bad service I – Long waiting time: There were nine of us, seven of whom were our important guests from Asia. Without stopping carefully, after about 1.5 hours we hadn't even gotten the starters... as already mentioned in many reviews... 3. EXTREMELY poor service II – Hospitality The older lady who served us was EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional. From the first moment to the end, she didn't even make eye contact or greet you - especially disrespectful to our guests from Asia!!! I honestly don't understand why someone would act with such an arrogant attitude... in this context?! Conclusion: There's a lot to discuss - for example, about a lack of staff when there's too much rush. But then you should be honest and say: “Unfortunately it’s no longer possible today.” Greed for sales must not prevail over quality and hospitality - especially not in a house that wants to present Frankfurt traditions worldwide. Frankfurt hospitality is at least as important as a good schnitzel with green sauce - and every guest deserves it. Especially in such a beautiful, traditional restaurant like the “Painted House”. How good do the schnitzels and fried potatoes actually have to taste to make up for such unnecessary unfriendliness? But thank you for allowing us to eat at the end. It was delicious.

Extremely rude service. We foreigners were not allowed to pay with a debit card, even though it was nowhere written that you could only pay with cash. Furthermore, all the venues had no problems paying by card. As if that wasn't enough, no tax receipt was issued. Extremely not recommended place!

When the house is full the noise level is very high. Otherwise nice atmosphere. The waiter was very unfriendly. Why? I don't know, maybe he doesn't like working and is overwhelmed by all the tourists. He should look for something else that makes him happy. I didn't like the apple cider at all, I had drunk a really tasty one hours before and was now able to judge this bad one. Hand cheese and the bread as well as the price were okay. We got this tavern as a tip from a former Offenbach resident. But definitely won't be coming back again. As tourists we didn't feel well treated.

German old people are fun. I remember Apelbein.

It has taken us a long time to serve. Bad faces. The sausages were very small and bland. The knuckle poorly cooked and raw. They have not served me the glass of wine that I have ordered three times. It took them half an hour to get the bill. In short, not to return and not recommend it at all.

Arrival & first impression We arrived by public transport, which was absolutely uncomplicated. The stop was just a few minutes' walk away - perfect for a relaxed start. From the outside, the “Zum Gemalten Haus” looked pretty, but also a bit inconspicuous. To be honest, I didn't have too many expectations. And then – the wow factor: As soon as you step through the door and the small tunnel, a completely different world opens up! Much bigger, livelier and more atmospheric than expected. Seating & ambience There are numerous spaces both outside and inside. Particularly nice: the outdoor spaces are permanently covered or can be covered if necessary - a huge plus in changeable weather! We sat outside and it was just really pleasant - lively but not too loud, cozy and with a certain rustic charm that really invites you to stay longer. We hadn't made a reservation and were seated two at a table for four - with the advice that two more people could possibly join us. For us this was completely fine and felt relaxed and uncomplicated. Food & Service We usually avoid classic German cuisine when traveling because we like to try new things. But here we were taught otherwise: The schnitzel with green sauce was an absolute highlight! We didn't know this combination from home and were thrilled - the sauce was fresh, herbal, perfectly balanced and the schnitzel was wonderfully crispy and juicy. A really round, delicious dish! Despite the very well-filled tables, the service was consistently friendly, attentive and surprisingly quick - both when taking the order and when serving. Here you can see that the team is well-coordinated and keeps an overview despite the hustle and bustle. Personal impression I didn't know exactly what to expect - but this lively, warm atmosphere immediately won me over. The “Painted House” exudes a real hospitality that you cannot find everywhere. It's uncomplicated, cheerful and honest - without a lot of chichi, but with even more heart. I would come back any time!

Normally you can eat very well there but today I wasn't satisfied!! I had to wait a long time for my food, my partner finished her food long ago. When my ribs came it was lukewarm and very fatty even though I had ordered a lean one

Even though a lot of things are geared towards tourists, you can still go here as a Saxon resident. As always, the restaurant was well attended, which speaks for itself, large portions, nice service. For me and my visitors, the first point of contact.

Special experience, this restaurant is so long that you almost get lost! Nice seating areas and a special German atmosphere. The menu includes beef, pork and vegetarian. The Frankfurter green sauce is an absolute must to have!

I like to come here when Eintracht plays in the Waldstadion afterwards. A lot of fans gather here and enjoy the Ebbelwoi with lazy people and typical Frankfurt dishes with lots of sauerkraut.

Food was good, reasonably priced but the service was a disgrace. Hectic, stressful, quick-tempered and provocative. Stupid sayings included. The tip, which was not generous, was rejected with the reference to "We don't accept such alms." Rarely have I had such a bad experience. It's a shame because the food was really okay. I stopped by today on my way for an Äppler (apple) and a Handkäse (cheese) with music. The Handkäse was exactly my cup of tea, a bit sour, but as I said, exactly my cup of tea. The service was also friendly and approachable at all times. I'd be happy to come back.

We reserved a table at the "Painted House" yesterday to enjoy traditional Frankfurt cuisine. The evening started slowly, as it took about 30 minutes for someone to come to our table and even take a drink order. We immediately ordered a 16-liter "Bembel" (a German beer), which fortunately lasted us for the rest of the evening. There was significantly less time between ordering drinks and ordering food, but we did wait an hour and a half for our food. When the food finally arrived, there were 10 minutes between the first and last dishes arriving at the table. For me, that's an absolute no-go when dining together. To make matters worse, one dish was forgotten, which made eating together completely impossible. By the time the missing dish arrived, the first people at the table had finished. Just to make things worse: there were six of us – so not a huge group... The apple wine and the green sauce were truly outstanding, and a small consolation for a truly ruined evening. The food (schnitzel, Frankfurter platter) was also delicious, but the organization, the long wait, and the ambiance itself really disappointed us and put us off our appetite. The table in the far corner, with no air flow, wasn't ideal either. It was quite stuffy and warm, which also bothered the neighboring table. In the end, they took two sparkling waters off our bill as an apology, which, in my opinion, wouldn't have changed the situation in any way—after all, we spent almost €200 there. Overall, I was really disappointed and couldn't enjoy the food, which was undoubtedly of good quality and delicious. The good apple wine at least made the evening bearable—especially after the long wait.

Terrible experience. If you don’t speak German, expect rude treatment. They deliberately changed our table to a worse spot, even though the place had plenty of empty places and had no reservation issues. The staff acted arrogant, trying to “teach” us things instead of offering proper service. On top of that, they even asked about our nationality in a way that felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming. If you’re an expat living in Germany or a tourist visiting, do yourself a favor and skip this place. There are plenty of German restaurants with better service that don’t discriminate. It’s 2025 and we are still facing these type of people that treat differently based on language or nationality, such a shame…

Great apple winery in Sachsenhausen. I like the atmosphere, especially before Eintracht home games. The Frankfurter Schnitzel and the pint that goes with it taste great and the service is also good. I always enjoy coming back.

No reservation possible for two people and not required according to the website. When we got there we were told quite rudely that there were no seats available without a reservation. Particularly annoying because we drove to Frankfurt specifically for this reason.

It's very, very outrageous that a schnitzel restaurant doesn't have any more schnitzel in stock. Should we use Mrs. Schreiber's toenails or something like that? I'm sorry, but I don't think it's ok.
