A charming little restaurant to experience classic Frankfurt food and drinks. You should definitely reserve a table on a Saturday. We hadn't, so we had to share a table with two other people. The waiter made this very clear to us when we asked if we could sit at the table that was reserved for 7:30 pm, and we arrived at 6 pm. His initial response was, "Don't bother me, I'm having a conversation here." At that point, I knew I was going to leave, but we didn't. He then said our only option was to join the other two people, which was fine. The schnitzel with green sauce was delicious, and the apple wine is also highly recommended.

Eight of us spent a lovely evening here and had a delicious meal. It was incredibly busy 🤣 Luckily, we had a table outside, so it was nice and quiet. I wish the service had more staff; they were working hard.

Once a year, there's a sweet treat; if you're lucky, you'll find it on the right week! There's a cellar door in the courtyard, from which you can even smell the fermenting apples in September. Waiters in livery, solid hand cheese, and happy customers. One room follows the next: a nested universe! And if you know the back entrance, it's less than ten minutes from the Südbahnhof (South Station)!

Good and plentiful food at fair prices.

We were there yesterday for a farewell party with 18 people. We were given several tables to choose from, and we finally chose the tables in the covered courtyard (with radiant heaters and underfloor heating). The service from our waiter, Dennis, was particularly positive; he did everything he could to ensure our stay was a memorable experience. 5 stars for him alone! The party was a complete success!

A typical apple wine restaurant in Sachsenhausen with a very pleasant ambiance, but also some rather simple seating. The food and drinks were delicious. When I arrived, it was still very busy, and the service seemed rather annoyed by the new guests, but this improved over the course of the evening as the restaurant emptied.

I always enjoy coming here. However, I don't think a very small piece of hand cheese with bread for €5.80 is acceptable. That's really going too far.

It's okay. The food selection is decent, the quality is okay, but it's not very authentic. It feels like it's being over-the-top.

A standard traditional German restaurant. It seems like everyone who comes here orders cider. Personally, I don't think the Frankfurt pork chop is as good as the Austrian one, but the green sauce is a local specialty, so I definitely want to try it!

We were there on a Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It was packed. After a 15-minute wait, we were able to get a seat. Ordering food and drinks was quick, accompanied by friendly remarks from the server. The salmon sandwich arrived quickly. I had to wait a long time for my dressed Camembert, as many Eintracht fans in the lobby had also ordered Camembert. We should have chosen better timing. Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Eintracht Frankfurt was playing at that time => it was very crowded and loud. A visit is not to be missed.

Nice ambiance, but that was it. The service was a complete disaster. Long waits; after repeated reminders, they brought a hand cheese, which apparently had to be ordered first. We ordered ribs with mashed potatoes, but what came? That's right: ribs alone and cold, with no mashed potatoes to be seen. No seasoning on the table. Salt, pepper, and caraway belong on the table in an apple wine tavern. It's a shame that such a beautiful establishment is being called into question by such disastrous service. Fortunately, there are other establishments in Sachsenhausen. You could delegate your service there for training; it's just around the corner.

Because I am Asian and I don't speak German, I was not given a seat at all. I waited for half an hour, and there were six or seven other tables in front of me. There was no waiter to take care of me.

The food is good. The ambiance is what you'd expect from a cider pub – authentic. Our reservation was simply made by phone with the note: "With a stroller." We arrived and were seated at a walk-through table. The stroller had to go. Our 8-month-old son was supposed to sit in a high chair. That worked for 15 minutes. I asked if we could sit outside: yes, I should ask his colleague outside. Said and done. No problem. We then moved ourselves with our drinks. The food was then served to us with a lecture about not having told him again and now he had to spend a long time looking for us. (There are six tables outside.) The lady outside was initially in a good mood but deteriorated over the course of the evening. Cards were thrown onto other guests' tables. All the guests were more than irritated by this kind of service. We would have liked to give the usual 10% tip, but after this embarrassing and unpleasant restaurant visit, we decided against it. We waited over 25 minutes for the bill, only to be dismissed with the words: "What's he supposed to thank you for?!" Since we waived the tip. Conclusion: It's a real shame, but the service is so abysmal, there are alternatives.

We went to this place to try authentic German food. It was good, although not my favorite: too much sauce and too much fried food. We tried the frankfurter, which was good, but I found it quite expensive. I moved away from my hometown in Hesse over 20 years ago. Whenever I visit, I absolutely have to come here for grie soß (grey sauce). The service is excellent, the Äppler (apple) is delicious, the medlar (mispelt) is a must, and you immediately strike up a conversation with other guests. Add to that the authentic ambiance, and you'll have a great time. No reservation is needed for two people; you'll be seated quickly (happily at a table with others who are alone or in pairs).

Excellent German food, lots of different delicious and filling options for any taste, very nice atmosphere, and so much history behind this restaurant. The staff speak fantastic English and are great. Kudos to Nicu on his impeccable English, exemplary customer service skills, and much appreciated recommendations. I look forward to returning.

On September 3, 2025, we tried to enjoy a carefree evening in the outdoor area of ​​the painted house. Unfortunately, we didn't expect the service staff to be there. We completely understood the long wait times, uncleaned tables, stressed staff, and succinct language. But... a very overworked and apparently untrained employee should definitely get rid of unfriendly and insulting behavior. It's a shame the evening had to end like this!

I only had a drink here, but it was busy....

The goulash soup was delicious! It had a sour taste and lots of big chunks of meat. It was so tasty that once you start, you won't be able to stop eating! The sausage platter was bigger than I expected and was very filling! The thin-skinned sausages, which are rare in Japan, were delicious with herbs. (See the back left in the photo.) Eating them with the accompanying sauerkraut was refreshing! The staff were kind and recommended a terrace seat with a great view when I entered the restaurant, so I chose one in the back. It's cool in the German summer, and the terrace is filled with plants, so it felt like time was passing slowly. When I passed inside the restaurant on my way out, I saw what appeared to be regulars having a great time, so I think the terrace seats are best for a quiet and relaxing time, and the inside seats are best for those who prefer a more lively atmosphere. If I had the time, I would have liked to go again!

The cider, ambiance, and food were all good! However, the waitress informed us that the management doesn't encourage card games at the table. Rude, unfriendly, and incompetent staff. We waited 20 minutes without receiving a menu. When we asked, the waiter rudely replied, ‘Just a minute.’ I eventually had to get the menu myself. Even after 35 minutes, no one came to take our order. After 45 minutes of being ignored, we unfortunately had no choice but to leave.

Unfortunately, it was a complete disappointment. We waited a total of 1.5 hours for our food and weren't even served properly at first. The staff seemed completely overwhelmed, and they offered no apologies or explanations. In the end, we left without food. This simply shouldn't happen.

I've known the Gemaltes Haus since childhood. After many years away, I returned there with my son and daughter-in-law: it was a homecoming! Good food, fair prices, and very, very friendly staff. Anyone expecting "swanky" is definitely in the wrong place; anyone who loves Frankfurt is definitely in the right place.

Felt like a had a long lost German Grandma that cooked lunch for me. Sausages were just superb 👌. The Blutwurst was heavenly match on a velvet sky... melting on your palette. And the long happy ending was of course Apfel Strudel himself made to justify your sinful desires with extra towers of fresh cream.

Schnitzel and apple wine are a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing. The staff were busy and the service wasn't as good as in Japan, but they did provide the bare minimum of service.

An incredibly beautiful old cider bar; the food is simple, but very good and varied. In addition to the standard offerings, there's also an extensive, changing weekly menu. Beautiful murals, which used to be common in these bars, but are no longer. There's also a small, enchanted courtyard where you can smoke. The cider is excellent. What more could you want? This is the perfect place for both locals and tourists to experience true cider culture.

Far from being the best restaurant serving typical Frankfurt cuisine. The potatoes are swimming in fat, the schnitzel isn't delicious, and the Grüne Soße lacks flavor. The food, unfortunately, didn't go any better. After the first few people had their food, the rest arrived over a period of 15 minutes. We had one dish twice. Our comment that a portion was missing was dismissed rather snippily. And then, some dishes were missing bread (which then took another 15 minutes), along with the "almost" last dishes. However, the previously complained about dish was still missing. When I asked again, the "server" became completely rude and said she could simply cancel the meal. I accepted this. I lost my appetite. Conclusion: I personally can't judge the quality of the food because I didn't get any. The others weren't average either. Regardless, the service is a complete disaster. I've never experienced anything like it. It doesn't matter how nice the ambiance is. All I can say is: NEVER AGAIN!

Wir waren gestern mit 11 Personen hier. Was soll ich sagen.... Der Service war, gelinde gesagt, eine Katastrophe. Erst mussten wir gute 20 Minuten warten, bis wir überhaupt Getränke bestellen konnten. Und dann dauerte es fast nochmal so lange bis diese auch kamen. Nur waren leider davon 5 falsch. Auf den Hinweis, dass es eine Apfelschorle sein sollte, kam die Antwort, dass wir ja auch Wasser bestellt hätten und dann mischen können. Mit dem Essen lief es dann leider auch nicht besser. Nachdem die Ersten ihr Essen hatten, kam der Rest dann über 15 Minuten verteilt. Ein Gericht hatten wir 2 Mal. Der Hinweis, dass hier noch eine Portion fehlt, wurde recht schnippisch "abgebügelt". Und dann fehlte bei manchen Gerichten das Brot (was dann nochmal 15 Minuten dauerte) zusammen mit den "fast" letzten Gerichten. Allerdings fehlte das vorher bereits reklamierte Gericht noch immer. Auf die erneute Nachfrage wurde die "Servicekraft" dann komplett unverschämt und meine sie könne das Essen auch einfach stornieren. Das habe ich dann auch angenommen. Mir war der Appetit vergangen. Fazit: Ich persönlich kann die Qualität des Essens nicht beurteilen da ich keines bekam. Bei den anderen kam es aber ein durchschnittlich auch nicht heraus. Aber unabhängig davon ist der Service eine einzige Katastrophe. So etwas habe ich noch nie erlebt. Da ist es dann auch irrelevant wie schön das Ambiente ist. Ich kann nur sagen: NIE WIEDER!

We visit this restaurant every time we're in Frankfurt; it's almost become a tradition for us. If you love green sauce, this is definitely the place to go. They also offer vegetarian dishes. The staff are always very friendly. It's always a good idea to reserve a table, as the restaurant is always fully booked.

There was a great atmosphere and they had menus in Spanish, a waitress spoke Spanish, we understood each other very well and we loved the cider house for both the cider and the food.

The food (Wiener Schnitzel and spare ribs) is unfortunately not recommended. The schnitzel was oily and dated, the fried potatoes were uncooked and dripping with oil. The spare ribs were dry, bland, and hard. The side salad was no better than that from a nursing home; it was unloving, tiny, and unappetizing. A waste of money. I sent the food back after a few bites. The poor waitress couldn't do anything either, as there was no one there to decide how to handle the situation. There was no manager in the restaurant.

We received the menu after 30 minutes, but the ordered food took another two hours to arrive. Such wait times are unreasonable for guests and significantly detract from the overall experience. Culinary Quality: The wait was ultimately compensated for by the outstanding kitchen performance. The food served was of excellent quality and tastefully convincing. Conclusion: Despite the excellent cuisine, the unacceptable wait times overshadow the restaurant experience. A significant improvement in service processes is urgently needed to live up to the high culinary standards.

For many years, it has always been a special treat for us to enjoy a veal schnitzel with green sauce and delicious, overcooked fried potatoes at the Painted House, but this time we discovered that the entire meal was no longer of the same quality as it once was. The fried potatoes were full of oil, dripping with water and pale instead of crispy. The veal schnitzel was tough and very small (it even passed for a senior citizen's portion). Even after complaining and unnecessary discussion, they still couldn't finish it. The schnitzel was delivered even smaller, and the fried potatoes hadn't changed either. We were told why we absolutely wanted veal, a pork schnitzel would be more tender. 🥲On top of that, the waitress brought us cutlery after us when we asked for it and placed the knife and the cables on the bare table without first placing a napkin. No one had cleaned the table beforehand, as the previous guests had just gotten up. So, for the time being, we were truly served by our beautiful Sachsenhausen in the Painted House.

I came here to try Frankfurt green sauce and apple wine. The place has that old German look and feels traditional. The food was mostly good, and I enjoyed the flavor of the green sauce. The potatoes were cooked perfectly. However, the eggs were so overcooked that the yolks had turned gray. The waiters were extremely surly. I was not greeted when I entered. They pointed to a table and I sat. They put the menu in front of me and when they came back to take my order said nothing, just stood next to the table. My food arrived in literally three minutes after I ordered. When I later signaled for the check, the waiter sat the bill on the table and took my cash. He never addressed me once or asked about my meal. I left and said thank you, and it was not returned. I felt unwelcome.

We were guests at the gemaltes Haus on Friday, June 20, 2025 – one of the most beautiful apple wine taverns in Frankfurt and, in my opinion, the best handkäs mit Musik (traditional cheese with music) I've ever enjoyed in Frankfurt. The gemaltes Haus is accessible from two streets and offers generous seating both indoors and outdoors. The ground-level entrance makes it completely wheelchair-accessible. We were given a table in a small corner outside, which was truly beautiful, and the old kiln was a real eye-catcher – until the food was served. We ordered the classic Frankfurt schnitzel, one veal, one pork. It was served with a generous portion of fried potatoes and more than enough Grie' sauce. The meat in both schnitzels was incredibly delicious, tender, and perfectly cooked. The portions are truly very fair. The green sauce, as well as the schnitzel, the fried potatoes, and the handkäs (traditional cheese with music), were just as delicious. The 5-pack apple wine (1.5L) was already brought to your table with a sour spritz, but you can also mix it yourself and add bottles of water. At €80 (including tip) for two appetizers (2x Handkäs mit Musik), 2x Frankfurter Schnitzel, 1x Coke, and 1x Äppler, we were completely full, had fun, and had a truly wonderful stay at the Painted House. The wonderful evening was rounded off by the fantastic staff. The Painted House is definitely recommended and a real must-visit on Schweizer Strasse. Happy Eating!

Traditional Äppelwoi (apple wine) establishment. One of the oldest in Frankfurt. Hip hop, Schoppe in your head! One year later in summer: Beautiful courtyard. Friendly service. We liked it a lot.

Almost every table ordered cider, and they ordered it in large jugs. The green sauce tasted quite special and was worth a try.

Traditional restaurant with good service. The waiter helped us with the menu in English. We ordered the traditional house dish with very tasty cooked cabbage, and the Schnitzel which was very tasty.

I was here about 10 years ago and actually had good memories. Unfortunately, the food has deteriorated considerably. The liverwurst and ribs were very overcooked (the liverwurst crumbled and wasn't creamy), so you need a lot of mustard. Sauerkraut didn't have any pepper, cloves, or anything like that. The black pudding was very good. The service was also good.

While researching where to try the most authentic RIPPCHEN which is a traditional Frankfurt specialty of cured pork chop we came across Zum Gemalten Haus, a well-known and much-loved German restaurant. It didn’t disappoint. When our meals arrived, we were surprised by the generous portions: a hearty pork chop served with a mountain of tangy, flavorful sauerkraut and perfectly creamy mashed potatoes. The combination was comforting, deeply satisfying, and quickly became one of our favorite meals in Frankfurt. The restaurant itself is full of character, decorated in traditional German style with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels genuinely local. We had hoped to sit outside in the smoking section, but the person assigned to that area hadn’t started their shift yet so we stayed in the front outdoor which turned out to be just as pleasant.

A busy cider pub with the usual selection. You get a decent portion for the price. The server was very child-friendly, and we were able to snag a table for five on a holiday evening, even without a reservation. It took a while to take our order, and the staff were busy. We would have ordered more water, but the servers are hard to reach during rush hour. We'll definitely be back.
