Wirtshaus Zur Brez´n in München

This year, we decided to go out for dinner on Boxing Day. We had made a reservation, but it wasn't necessary. We ordered the pretzel and chicken stew. It was a generous portion. However, the duck was very dry. Perhaps it would be possible to serve the stew on a warming plate, as the food cooled down quickly.

We had a breaded chicken salad and a roast pork. We've known the restaurant for a long time and wanted to eat there on Sunday at lunchtime because of the cozy atmosphere. The service was quick and very friendly. The food was very disappointing. Why are there chefs and restaurateurs who don't do their jobs with any enthusiasm or love? The roast pork had a very good, dark, flavorful gravy, but the two small potato dumplings were just reheated and convenience food. The meat was a bit tough and much too thick. At €18, that's normal these days, but it wasn't a dining experience. The breaded chicken salad consisted of two chicken schnitzels and a mountain of green salad, with the bland yogurt sauce in a separate bowl. Well, it was breaded chicken salad with a pretzel twist. It's a shame; you could really offer your guests more for their money. Unfortunately, your food isn't worth the money, sorry.

An excellent restaurant, one of the few authentic Bavarian restaurants. The atmosphere is very welcoming and traditional. The staff is attentive and discreetly available to satisfy guests' requests. Typical dishes are excellently prepared. Not accessible to guests with disabilities. Recommended for those who want to savor the local flavors.

Simply outstanding! Delicious food, arrived very quickly, and the service was extremely friendly. Highly recommended: the Schlemmerpfandl (a mixed grill dish). The value for money is absolutely incredible. We'll definitely be back whenever we're in Munich.

Very nice traditional German restaurant with a classic German menu. The food is solid, the atmosphere is fantastic and the staff is very nice. Can get busy in the evenings. Soild choice if you are looking for something classic in the Schwabing area.

I came here spontaneously and was sooooooo impressed!!!! I've rarely experienced such excellent German cuisine! The food was incredible; we had sauerkraut, Grandma's meatloaf, and roast pork with cracklings. Everything was incredibly delicious and very generous; we were stuffed.

Had diarrhea after dining at Wirtshaus. Atmosphere was crowdy and the waiter wasn’t helpful to bring baby seat for us at the basement. Therefore, we don’t want to pay tips but asked to pay tips starting 8.5-10-15% of the bill.. that was kinda insane!

Tasty traditional Bavarian food. We visited this venue for lunch and we liked it. everything tasted delicious. I had the pumkin soup and goulash , my husband chose traditional cheese pasta, and our son enjoyed the pork rib. Everything was very tasty! We did not have reservation but we could find a table instantly. But reservation might be necessary for dinner; although it is a big restaurant with lots of sitting options. The waitress was very polite and helpful, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The decoration was also traditional and nice. We recommend to go this restaurant if you are around.

A classic Bavarian restaurant on a very busy corner, catering to a diverse clientele, though you'll still find plenty of locals. Quality pays off, after all. Once inside, you immediately forget you're on Leopoldstrasse. You're treated to a cozy, rustic Bavarian atmosphere with good beer and delicious food. The benchmark, as always, is the pub classic: Bavarian roast pork with crackling. Here, it's served in a deep plate with two medium-sized potato dumplings and plenty of gravy. The roast pork is generous, with the crackling on top and a thin layer of fat on the underside, which you can either cut off or enjoy eating along with the meat. At €18.90, the price is highly reasonable for the location. Sure, you can find roast pork cheaper elsewhere, but the quality isn't always up to par. My second dish was Grandma's meatloaf, which was also a hit. The service was exceptionally friendly.

Unfriendly and unpleasant waiters. EXTREMELY long wait for food and drinks (1 hour!!!) Then we were rudely ushered away because the next reservation was due. At that point, we had less than 20 minutes to eat. Then another guest yelled at us because we didn't get up immediately. The waiter just stood there staring into space. The bill was slammed down without a thank you from the waiter. NEVER AGAIN!! Go a few meters further to the much better alternative (Papa Benz, for example).

I was there today and ordered something from the lunch menu to take away. The waiter was very attentive, cheerful, friendly, and competent. The food was also delicious, and the portion was generous. I had veal roast in cream sauce with Spätzle. I just wish there had been more gravy; the Spätzle were completely without any, but the taste was absolutely fantastic!

Great mix of an old German Tavern with a sprinkle of Beer Hall. Big tables, several floors. Good local beer selection (of course with 1L option) and great schnitzels! Staff uniform is also Lederhosen. Highly reccomend to try this on your Munich visit!

Despite its posh address on Leopoldstrasse, this is a really great pub with very good food at reasonable prices. Whenever I'm in Munich, I try to eat here!

Although there was space, we were given seats for our meal (as we had been told beforehand) at two small café tables, which were bolted down so close to the permanent bench that we felt cramped. We really should have left right then and there. But hope springs eternal! Besides, it was raining outside 😟 We ordered a salad with goat cheese, green spelt oil, honey, and bread chips for lunch – nothing could possibly go wrong...or so we thought. The oil was missing, and instead we got balsamic vinegar 😵‍💫, the bread chips were just two simple, greasy, half-slices of rye bread, and the tomatoes tasted wilted. Because there was obviously no decent dressing available, we were given a glass of yogurt-lemon dressing. Not appropriate...Well, it's a Bavarian inn, so you don't order salad there. However, my husband's Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) were the worst I've ever had. With pre-fried onions on top, oh dear. Then I had a café crema that tasted like old office filter coffee. So, a complete flop.

I'm revising my original rating upwards by two stars. The food is much better now than it used to be. The staff is very friendly, but also very numerous (so much for the "skilled worker shortage"). The prices are exorbitant (a beer with tip is six euros), and the restrooms are unfortunately abysmal. In short: A pleasant atmosphere for well-heeled customers.

I asked several times if there were gluten-free options. I was repeatedly assured that my meal was gluten-free. Unfortunately, that's not true. I'm lying in bed in severe pain 👎🏻👎🏻 Never again!

Luckily, we had made a reservation, even though we initially only got a bar table. The friendly gentleman at reception then seated us at a table for four, remarking, "You guys seem to like each other, so there's plenty of room for five." And indeed, there was plenty of room, as it turned out. We started off quickly, and the service was attentive, until the restaurant filled up—understandably. However, when the food arrived, only four out of five dishes appeared. When we inquired, our server, Julia, promised to look into it… and then apparently proceeded to completely ignore it. After an hour of her being completely absent and our consultation with a colleague, she finally explained that she had "only ordered four dishes because she wasn't sure if the five of us would fit at the table." Spoiler alert: We did. And we had been for quite some time. A heads-up before ordering would have been nice; then we could have saved ourselves all five plates and the wait. Instead of simply apologizing and ensuring the food arrived as quickly as possible, we were told to go downstairs and complain there. With that, Julia disappeared (perhaps along with the two beers she'd ordered but never brought?). Luckily, her colleague (whose name I unfortunately lost in the commotion) was having a better day. He brought us an apology aperitif, was incredibly friendly, and, along with the food, salvaged the evening. Otherwise, it would probably have been one star instead of three. I worked in the service industry for years myself, but treating guests the way Julia did would have been unthinkable in our establishment.

The duck breast with rösti and some vegetables was exceptionally delicious. Very lean and perfectly cooked, it could have used just a little more sauce. A Primitivo wine rounded off the flavor nicely.

Good food. Unfortunately, it was freezing cold inside. The server kept saying he was working alone. I'm never going back there.

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant recommended by a friend and were very pleased. The food was very good and the portions generous, the staff equally polite and courteous, and the quality/price ratio was good considering German prices.

Don't go here, they let you wait ages in the line no one comes and then they ley you waiting for ages and then when you ask them we have been waiting ages at least can we sit at bar, they be like "Ooh You should Wait it says on the Door" oh no really didnt see that thanks

We used to come here often and enjoyed it. Today, unfortunately, it was a disappointment. The service was okay – but it was also very crowded. We ordered five different dishes, all okay, but nothing special. The Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) were awful. The texture (lumpy) and the taste (it just tasted like nothing) were both terrible. Charging €18.90 for that is outrageous. In general, the selection of vegetarian (and vegan) dishes was rather limited. Even for a traditional German restaurant in 2025, that's poor. What a shame :(

You feel welcome the moment you enter – the interior is lovingly designed, rustic, and yet very inviting. The menu offers a great selection of authentic Bavarian specialties, all freshly prepared and simply delicious. The beer is particularly delicious, with a large selection of regional varieties. The inn is quaint and charming, just as you would expect in Munich. The service was friendly and attentive. We felt completely at home and will definitely return on our next visit to Munich – highly recommended for anyone who loves authentic Bavarian cuisine and coziness! 🍽️🍻

We had reserved a table for eight people. The restaurant was charmingly Bavarian, and the service was friendly. Unfortunately, we had to wait forever—two full hours—for the food, which unfortunately didn't arrive in its entirety, was cold, and no longer tasty. The complimentary schnapps didn't add any value to the evening. The price for these services was completely justified, so only one star and I can't recommend it. Sorry!

I enjoyed my meal so much that I visited twice in my 4 day trip. The Wiener Schnitzel was amazing. The breading so light and crispy paired with the cranberries... So Good! Really enjoyed the dark beer too.

The schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn were plentiful and very tasty. The service staff were prompt, attentive, and in a good mood. Only the loud music "Alexa, play Caruso!" (waiters) was too much and really didn't fit the occasion.

Tasted very good. The side salad leaves were a bit too large, making it unwieldy, but very fresh. Overall, the food was good; larger groups seem to be more profitable, so service is better. P.S. The waiter who brought the food and cleared it away was actually very nice.

Absolute catastrophe!!! The waiter yelled at me twice because I was sitting upstairs. Others who were also yelled at ran away again. No greeting - nothing. Tried to force me downstairs even though the place was fully occupied. The waiter would definitely win the award for the unfriendliest and worst waiter in Munich. Absolutely incompetent and unfriendly. Forgot that he's a service provider. Had to ask for the bill several times. Then, in his anger, he slammed 10 menus on the table so that all the guests looked up. Then he shouted abuse at me. He was also really rude to me. There was no manager to speak to. I wonder if they only survive because of the location? The prices are exorbitant, even for Schwabing. NEVER EVER.

Actually, it doesn't deserve any stars at all. I placed my order and waited half an hour, and the wait for the food took three-quarters of an hour. The food was so-so, could have been better. Waiting for payment also took 10 minutes, and finally, the prices are completely overpriced! Conclusion: 0.5 out of 5 stars, once and never again!

He decided I hadn't tipped him enough and wanted to round up the amount for himself. Then I said, "Is that how it's done here? Do you tip yourself?" He then reluctantly, grumpily, and pointedly handed me back the coins one by one. And €50 too little. I was so irritated by the situation that I almost didn't notice. I don't think I need to mention that he was rude throughout the entire interaction. Yes, I didn't tip him much. Brewery culture notwithstanding. Even if I hadn't tipped him at all, the waiter's behavior wouldn't have been acceptable. It's a shame about the way the evening ended, because it was a very good knuckle of pork. --- An older, male waiter brought us the bill. A charming Bavarian restaurant in Schwabing. With both outdoor and indoor seating on multiple levels, it serves typical Bavarian specialties. The service is friendly and prompt, and the food is plentiful and delicious.

Very good roast pork and freshly tapped beer. 👌 Just before closing time, oriental music played. A bit unusual for a Bavarian inn, but otherwise absolutely recommended!

We ordered 6 beers between three of us, and a curry wurst which costs 15 euros. Outrageous price for the quality but what makes worse is the waiter. He asked if we wanted to pay tips and when we refused it he said ‘why do you not pay tips? This is normal in Germany’ we said we didn’t receive any extra service that we wanted to give tips and that the owner is supposed to be paying wages fair not forcing customers to pay tips. He refused to show us the details of the price and threw the card used for payment on the table and left without saying anything. We think forcing paying tips should not be the normal and the employers should pay employees fairly. We will not return to the restaurant and will not recommend this place.

Absolutely recommended! I'd love to come back again. We ate there with a small group in the evening. The staff was friendly and relaxed, and we were served quickly. Two days later, we also received excellent service at the Weißwurst breakfast (from 11:00 a.m.). The portions, prices, and taste are impressive. It's located right on Leopoldstraße near the "Münchner Freiheit" station, making it very easy to reach. Thank you for your Bavarian hospitality.

One of our first meals in Munich and the food was outstanding. We had the schnitzel and a special Alpine knodel along with the kaiserschnarm. Delicious food and kind service. Would highly recommend.

Today I was insulted by a waiter working there, telling me I’m not a real German since I wasn’t born here. Although I’ve been there plenty of times, and the food is good, it was out of line, disrespectful, and embarrassing to show my visiting friends

The food was overall delicious and highly recommended! The knuckle of pork was particularly outstanding. The Kaiserschmarrn was also very tasty, although it lacked raisins and almonds. The service was very good and extremely friendly, which made the visit even more enjoyable. All in all, a great restaurant with delicious food and friendly service – I'd love to come back!

I ate the best Kaiserschmarren of my life there. That alone is enough to make us come back to Munich!

We've eaten here several times. The food is okay, but not outstanding. There are much better restaurants. The prices were ultimately too high for the quality of the food. Unfortunately, we had to wait a long time to get the menu. We waited just as long to order drinks. The cheese spaetzle was tasteless and a bit burnt. The goat cheese salad was okay, but ultimately, you can't go wrong with a salad. Bottom line: I probably wouldn't go back again.

Styrian fried chicken salad: advertised as "crispy breadcrumbs"—meaning twice as crispy, according to the announcement. What arrived was a really soggy baguette. The waiter's response: "You can't bake the bread fresh for every guest," and "actually, they serve black bread, which is really crispy." That doesn't help me much when they're supposed to serve something else. The tomatoes tasted spoiled. The "mixed salad" was a mixed salad with two (spoiled) tomatoes and two slices of cucumber.

The table we had personally reserved outside was suddenly no longer available, so we went inside for our birthday party and had to wait forever until we were finally served and then received our food. The Kässpatzn (cheese spaetzle) were a disaster: tasteless, and the onions were burnt. A few months ago, the Kässpatzn had been delicious. To top it off, we had to wait over 30 minutes for a simple apple strudel. Sorry—not like that.

It was good, but if your choice is to try traditional Bavarian food, you should choose one in the center... if, on the other hand, you escape the heat of the Indian center, like I did, and relax with a swim in the English Garden and walk through it until you reach this restaurant, it could be a good option.

I went there on the recommendation of my hotel. I got a seat quickly and the service was friendly. My meatloaf was a bit small, unfortunately. I'm not a big glutton, but it didn't really fill me up.

One small drawback: we had to wait almost 1 hour and 15 minutes for our Kaiserschmarrn, which was quite long, but worth it. Despite this minor inconvenience, I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience the authentic atmosphere and cuisine of Munich!

The food was very good. There weren't enough staff for the number of guests. We had to wait 30 minutes to place our order and then another 30-45 minutes for the food. The waiters were attentive and smiling, but four people serving a full restaurant wasn't enough.

Absolute hell, incredibly unfriendly to children. We were thrown out because my 3-year-old briefly licked the window and I didn't stop him within seconds. The food took forever, and we weren't served any anyway because we (including our 80-year-old grandpa) were simply thrown out on the street. Definitely not with children, and not in general!

We got engaged 50 years ago at Brez'n. For the occasion, I reserved a table upstairs for lunch and it was confirmed. Unfortunately, it turned out that the reservation was unknown to the overwhelmed waiter – the waiter was managing the entire operation, including the outdoor area, on his own at the time. For the same reason, he couldn't offer us a table upstairs either. So, unfortunately, we couldn't celebrate our anniversary as planned. It's a criticism that, despite the confirmation, there was no table reservation and that there weren't enough staff to fulfill our request. This was particularly frustrating on this particular day.

Nice and rustic. I would recommend the ribs over anything else.

And once again, poor Brez'n has a new owner, who has made the place even more unpleasant. It's obvious that Brez'n isn't a traditional Bavarian inn; it's a fantasy creation of the Sami brothers from the 70s. Nevertheless, I and many Munich residents have always enjoyed coming here. For many years, we spent pleasant times here and enjoyed good food, although the quality had already deteriorated considerably under the previous owner. Today, I wanted to eat a SMALL roast pork there, as I often do. Because of the weather, I had to go inside, where the very loud, super-stressful, cheap music drowned out everything. My question about a Pilsner was met with a blunt NO. My question about my usual small roast pork was also met with a blunt NO, as he said he no longer offers it. The owner himself said: then we'll just go somewhere else to eat! That's the way Munich's gastronomy is going. In a location where there are already plenty of tourists willing to pay, one can probably do without any courtesy, hospitality, or pleasant atmosphere. Such a shame!

The pretzels, of course, are a dream – fresh, soft inside, crispy on the outside. I had the schnitzel with a cold beer, and the evening was perfect. Everything just fits here: the food, the atmosphere, and the Bavarian way of life. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Munich. Cheers!

The cheese spaetzle were a bit bland, the cheese rather tasteless, and the onions slightly rubbery. I didn't need the salad – it was very large and had very little dressing. The staff was very friendly, and the terrace outside is a really nice place to sit.

Every time I visit home, I look forward to a meal at Brez'n! The roast pork with cress is delicious, and the prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is hearty, and the service is very friendly. I'm already looking forward to the next time.

Great food but too many posers on the street and therefore not a nice and quiet ambience

Unfortunately, the pretzels aren't what they used to be. The food is quite okay, although we discovered that the fried chicken was pressed meat. The current waiter is completely out of place for this establishment. He plays the music (which is completely out of place for this establishment) so loud that it can still be heard outside in the beer garden. In bad weather, sitting inside is impossible because the folding door opens, making it so cold you have to put on your jacket. Despite asking them to close the door, it remained open, so we decided to finish our drinks and leave. They don't know how to pack food either. I took the remaining roast pork with me. The waiter gave us the bag, and the sauce was already floating around in it. On the holiday, the entire restaurant and beer garden were EMPTY at lunchtime, despite the sunshine and warm temperatures. That says it all!!!!!!
