We keep coming back because the price/performance ratio is simply excellent.

I still remember the time of our country's division vividly, though I experienced it on the western side of the border. My knowledge of life in East Germany (GDR) was therefore limited to stories. At the Volkskammer restaurant, I was finally able to experience it firsthand – and enjoyed an excellent meal while I was there. The ambiance is authentic and conveys a sense of originality rarely found elsewhere. The staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive, and the prices are very reasonable. All in all, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Volkskammer.

Located right next to the Ostbahnhof (East Train Station), this restaurant is highly recommended for anyone who fancies a little trip back in time. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious, and the evening was perfect for us. We'd gladly return.

It was very nostalgic, like something from the East. But that's exactly how it should be. We had a wonderful evening. We were there for an 80th birthday celebration. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The service was simply superb. We'll definitely be back. Thank you so much.

I was very pleasantly surprised; the food was really delicious, and the old East German items are interesting and bring back memories, at least for me. It's worth a visit. Parking is difficult and, if you do find a spot, expensive.

Such a unique and fun experience. It is so traditional in terms of food options and flavors but the atmosphere makes the experience even better. The food was delicious, the blonde server we had was very friendly and welcoming, and the vibe was amazing. We had the pork knuckle (which was a huge portion) and the roulade and both were so tasty. We also tried the colorful pudding for dessert which is something I have never seen before and it was very different but delicious.

This was our third time here... always great!

I was really looking forward to the Jägerschnitzel and was very disappointed. It was more breading than schnitzel, and in some places it still had actual lumps of flour stuck to it (you can see that quite clearly in the picture). It's a shame, but even the Jägerschnitzel from the Rewe deli counter is better. The service was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant itself is very charmingly decorated. I might come back for a beer, but not for the food.

Typical GDR style We happened upon this restaurant by chance and were very impressed. My wife, who was originally from the GDR, convinced me, a West German, to try East German dishes. You have to be brave and curious to try some of the dishes, but the taste is just like the former GDR. The ambiance is just like it used to be. All in all, we highly recommend the restaurant, the Volkskammer.

The People's Chamber brought back many memories for us, and we discovered many things from our time in the decorations.

Perfect for a night out while staying true to the DDR theme. The impeccable decor feels like you're there, and the dishes are typical of East Germany. However, you don't go there for the waitress's smile, which is as austere as can be.

Just a note for sensitive guests. We were completely satisfied and would gladly return. Be sure to make a reservation in advance; getting a table on the spur of the moment may be difficult.

A journey into the past, simply beautiful and emotional

Simply fantastic! It's always been a good choice, whether for two or with a larger group. The food is always excellent, top-notch solyanka, and I was also very impressed with the goulash. Even if you're sitting outside, you should definitely take a look inside; it's a great atmosphere, a true journey back in time. The Volkskammer has been a staple of my every visit to Berlin for years!

I was there on 19.10.2025. The headwaiter was rude and unprofessional. Recommend to no one

I was there in 2020 or 2021, and the service was much friendlier, and there were cushions and seats for children, and the food was much better. This time, the food was rushed, the meat was tough, the knives blunt, and the children could barely eat or sit on the seats. Even in the GDR, they used to just have cushions. Unfortunately, I can't really recommend it anymore, which is a shame.

We were a large group, and everyone was completely satisfied. The food, service, and atmosphere were simply top-notch.

A nostalgic, authentic, and very busy restaurant. The ambiance is captivating, and the service is pleasant and friendly. The wait for the food was okay; the food is very tasty, and the price-performance ratio is absolutely reasonable. We'd be happy to return to try other dishes. My 14-year-old son and I ate there today. I wanted to introduce him to a bit of East German nostalgia. From the reception to the food to the furnishings, I immediately felt like I'd been transported back 35 years. I definitely recommend it, and I'd like to thank the staff. We'll be back.

After seeing many DDR museums, i had to look for a restaurant serving food from that era. And here it is, and so much more. Experience a gateway to the past and enjoy lovely east german cuisine whilst surrounded by relics from the past. From documentaries about INTERFLUG on the tv, to portaits of the leaders and an audio ambience with hits from the time period. You can call this a 5 star museum restaurant. And huge kudos to Ziko for the great work! Will definitely come back here whenever i visit Berlin in the future!

A most interesting experience: food and decor equally intriguing.

For someone who was born in East Germany this is a bit of a time travel to how food was e.g. in school. The place is very authentic, lots of memories, tokens, bit like a museum for socialist times in Germany. Besides the historical parts, it's great food and even for someone who can't relate, it's a nice insight. Many of the meals are still prepared at home and some others are considered local cuisine either way. Highly recommended. A must have when you're in Berlin

If you want to experience a "culinary journey" to the GDR, this is the place for you. Good, well-chosen dishes on the menu. The service was okay and attentive. However, there weren't many guests at the time. The outdoor area could use a visual refresh. Recommended.

We visited the Volkskammer with our teenage children. Plenty of decor from bygone eras and a beautifully designed menu invite you to reminisce. All of this paired with delicious "GDR food" and fast, friendly service. A successful visit, keep up the good work.

A unique experience of the atmosphere of the GDR in the 70s. The food is good, the service is not so good because you have to chase the waitresses.

It's a nostalgic experience and brings back childhood memories. Everything is thoughtfully designed and coordinated. It feels like a journey back in time. We recommend the Grüne Wiese (green meadow) as a drink, the tomato soup as a starter, the Jägerschnitzel (hunter's schnitzel), and the Quarkkeulchen (curd dumplings). Very tasty and at a fair price. The service is very friendly.

The food was delicious, the service was very friendly. There were fruit films on TV, which wasn't so nice, even though the sound was off. Eastern European music in the background would have been nice. Recommended for anyone who wants to turn back the clock for a while and enjoys good food and drink.

Absolutely great, I feel like I'm back in the 80s, great restaurant, furniture like in the GDR times, food is simply top-notch, just like it used to be, I'd love to come back, keep it up.

I went in a group of 6 people and we wanted to try some typical German food. Unfortunately all the dishes were super salty. The flammkuchen was salty AND dry. When we mentioned this, the waiter said they had a new chef that was still learning and offered us some chocolate cake has compensation, which was nice, but the dinner experience was still ruined unfortunately.

The restaurant is nice, a nice alternative to the usual options. However, a family member ordered salmon, and when we pointed out a mistake, the waiter explained that they had served white salmon, not pink, to justify himself. Given that I didn't know white salmon existed, I verified that it's rarely found in the Pacific and is used in sushi and gourmet dishes, so it couldn't have been the dish we ordered. So, to avoid admitting the mistake, the waiter confirmed that the chef also said it was salmon. It's annoying for the person paying to feel mocked when all they could have said was, "Sorry, there was a mistake."

We were at the Volkskammer in Berlin – since we were in the city, we wanted to eat something off the beaten track. We enjoyed the food, and the staff were friendly and cheerful. It exudes real nostalgia for the former East Germany – a special experience!

I found the name of the bathroom funny. The food was good (farmer's breakfast) and quite filling, leaving me feeling very full. The drinks were very good. We ordered traditional ones, one like apple juice (Apfelschorle) and another, a banana and blackberry smoothie. The service was friendly, and they had the menu in English.

The food was delicious! You'll feel like you're back in the 70s and 80s in this restaurant, filled with typical GDR objects, photos, and ornaments. A Russian (?) film is playing on the TV, followed by the May 1989 news. The menu and drinks menu are entirely East German, so there were many dishes and drinks on the menu that were unfamiliar to us. And that's precisely what makes it so enjoyable! We had the schnitzel with Würzfleisch, the breaded schnitzel, and the Thuringian Roast Beef. It was, in a word, delicious! Generous portions, and very reasonable prices. The Kalter Hund (arretjescake) and chocolate pudding were also delicious. The Volkskammer is highly recommended!

A very delicious restaurant. This is my first time in Berlin, and I set myself the goal of trying a Jägerschnitzel, and I succeeded here. Very friendly staff and truly authentic food (in my opinion). I'll be back next time I'm in Berlin.

Today we spontaneously visited the Volkskammer again. We were seated right away. The food was excellent, as always. Even our special requests were accommodated. The service was good, as always. This is the fifth time we've been there. I always enjoy coming back.
