Pure childhood memories👌 Sure, the old-world feel isn't up to date anymore, but it would have added a little extra kick. Yes, the staff made a small mistake. It happens—they're only human, after all. The food itself—a shame we can only give it 5 stars. Service—friendly, they can even laugh along if you're joking. Ambience—I think there's a bit too little nostalgia for the East. A member of the FDJ (Free German Youth) or a Young Pioneer would have been more welcoming, especially in the entrance area.

Hearty Food with a Retro Touch I visited Volkskammer Berlin for brunch and really enjoyed the nostalgic DDR-style setting. The ambiance is cozy, with vintage decor and a laid-back, welcoming vibe that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a slice of East German history. I ordered the Schweinesteak au Four, which came baked with melted cheese - rich, satisfying, and full of flavor. My friend had the Matjesfilet, a pickled herring dish that was fresh, tangy, and beautifully paired with creamy potatoes and onions. A real classic, done well. Service was relaxed but friendly, and the portions were generous. If you’re looking for traditional German comfort food in a unique and atmospheric setting, Volkskammer is definitely worth a visit.

If you want to immerse yourself in the nostalgia of the past, this is the place for you. Even with GDR TV soundtracks

Unfortunately, this isn't authentic GDR cuisine, because solyanka doesn't include a slice of lemon, and roulades don't garnish with sour cream. Solyanka is a leftover dish, and tropical fruits were rare back then. They certainly didn't waste them on solyanka! Roulades don't have a splash of sour cream. Nobody made such a fuss about it; instead, they braised roulades for a decent amount of time to prevent them from becoming tough. I'm from the GDR, and before reviewing them, I asked numerous people if my thoughts on this were correct. EVERYONE confirmed it. So, if you're going to advertise something as "original," it should be thoroughly original and not contain any of the chef's individual self-expression. Otherwise, please cross out "original," because otherwise it would be misrepresentation.

Pleasant restaurant near Berlin Ostbahnhof.

The staff were friendly, but unfortunately they forgot about us, even though there was hardly anything to do. There was time for a smoke break! Main courses arrived after 45 minutes, only upon request. Appetizers consisting of spiced meat and soup were basically okay. Unfortunately, both main courses were disappointing. The liver was dry and black. The goulash was unfortunately peppered, and the typical flavor was no longer recognizable. It was a shame, a disappointing experience. After requesting feedback, they refused to accept the situation, explaining that the chef was from Thuringia, and that's how he does things (although it's not stated on the menu).

1 point for the detailed ambiance and the free toiletries in the women's restroom. Another point for the solyanka and a fresh drink. I didn't like the rest of the food, the wait for the main course (45 minutes from the time the appetizer was cleared), the lack of understanding from the staff, and a scene when, when asked, you gave negative feedback about the food and didn't tip. I'd sum it up as an authentic GDR experience. But I don't need to have it again.

I can't say anything negative. It was a fantastic experience here, the food was excellent, and hospitality was top priority.

I, or rather all of us who were there, were born in the GDR. We had so much fun and were able to reminisce. I can only recommend it to everyone. Please make a reservation in advance... it's worth it. The food was very good. Prices are reasonable.

First the good: The atmosphere is simply fantastic. You feel like you've been transported back in time 40 years. The food was also good, although some of it wasn't quite as hot. In my opinion, the service could be improved. Even though the place wasn't full, it took a long time to clear the table, and parts of the order were simply forgotten. But what was completely unacceptable was the loud complaining in the dining room about customers who didn't leave tips and the gossiping about colleagues. I would like to see this kind of thing take place in the kitchen in the future, where the guests don't necessarily notice.

I got the broiler chicken and it was well seasoned. The fries were perfect, only issue for me was the chicken was a little dry but super super well seasoned. Also, the food took nearly an hour to come out for 7 people.

A positive return to the excellent cuisine of yesteryear. Highly recommended, and absolutely amazing. The welcome was very warm and friendly, with wit and charm. The service, despite the restaurant being full, was extremely attentive and customer-focused. A waiter never runs out of things... It was so great and the food tasted sooooooo good. We wanted a typical German restaurant, this was a real East German restaurant. Everything here breathes the East German atmosphere, chairs that you don't want to sit on for too long and food that you think in advance, mmmm is that a tasty combination. Schnitzel with pasta? Cold dog? When we ask for fries with the schnitzel we get the answer that that is not appropriate. Ok then the usual pasta with it. Afterwards it tastes great and we had a nice experience.

We discovered this restaurant by chance. It was completely booked, so we made a reservation for the next day. This was necessary, as it was once again very busy. The welcome was very warm, the decor was a lovely reminder of times long past, and the food was absolutely delicious. We were very satisfied and can definitely recommend a visit.

Yes, it was just like I remembered it from before. The tables, the chairs, the smell, and the taste. Simply everything. I remembered a little bit about kindergarten and, of course, the dishes at home.

2 days ago with a large sports group from HBS; warmth and great service, we enjoyed the atmosphere without glorification and authentic Ossi dishes, which we knew from our youth, were served here in a cheerful atmosphere, and the final highlight - the cold dog; again at any time and will definitely be recommended by us everywhere, many thanks to the team

Lovingly furnished in the style of the former GDR, you feel like you are traveling back in time. The menu? Authentic and typically East German: Soljanka, spiced meat, Jägerschnitzel and of course sausage goulash and much more - all cooked with a lot of heart and really tasty! 🍽️😃 The entire service is very warm, attentive & quick. If you love nostalgia or just want to experience something different: absolute recommendation! It would be a blast if DDR songs were played in the restaurant... Were here today because we were in the mood for German cuisine again and then wanted to go to the cinema. The restaurant has a nice traditional DRR flair. I chose the Goldbroiler and my companion chose False Hasen. I found my chicken a bit dry but the sauce and fries were very tasty. My companion really raved about his fake rabbit. For dessert we had cold dog and it was delicious and reminded me of the past. Waitress was friendly and on the ball. So if you love East German cuisine, you should come here.

Great menu with home cooking from GDR times. There is a good selection of starters such as Soljanka or Karlovy Vary cuts. For the main course we had beef roulade, sausage goulash and false hare. Everything tasted very good and was freshly prepared. You can tell that everything is cooked in-house. Prices are totally reasonable for the large portions. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. You can park on the side of the road on the opposite side. If the weather is good you can sit outside at a few tables. You can also easily pay by card.

GDR restaurant diagonally across from the Ostbahnhof. Parking spaces may be found further back. There is also a lot going on during the week, reservations would be advisable. Unfortunately the solyanka wasn't spicy and fatty enough. Also missing was a lemon quarter to crush. The crispy white bread triangle was delicious. I was slightly disappointed with the Jägerschnitzel. I have no idea what taste the breading had, the hunting sausage underneath was strangely shaped. The noodles were slightly overcooked. Unfortunately no taste memory.

It was a while ago, the four of us were in the Volkskammer at lunchtime in the middle of the week. A real experience. When we arrived the waiter asked us if we had a reservation, the answer was no and he assigned us a table. At that time (around 1 p.m.) it was manageably full and I was wondering about the question. Okay, the extremely nice waitress quickly took our order. All 4 different dishes. They quickly came to the table. And suddenly the restaurant filled you! I would like to say it was almost full most had reservations! About the food: classic GDR dishes, but extremely tasty. Afterwards we had desserts, the Swedish ice cream sundae is an absolute must. We were there for almost 3 hours and had a nice conversation with our real Berlin waitress. We felt really comfortable here and will definitely come back.

It's definitely worth a visit. Map is small but nice. You also have to like it, and it gives an insight into the deprivations the GDR citizens were exposed to! The waiter contributed greatly to the positive atmosphere, even if the topic of the GDR itself didn't really produce anything good. (My opinion, which not everyone has to share)

Volkskammer is a great restaurant to eat food that was common in the DDR/GDR. The portion sizes are large and the food is definitely authentic. The prices are fair also. The food came out very quick and the service was good. Seating is available inside and outside. I would definitely come here again.

I was a guest at the Volkskammer with my family on my birthday. I didn't grow up in the GDR and can't judge how authentic a visit to the Volkskammer is compared to the real gastronomy of the GDR. But I can say that it gave me a feeling of what it might have been like and it was definitely an experience I wouldn't want to miss. The food was delicious (especially the “Jägerschnitzel”) and the service was attentive and friendly. So I'll definitely come back next time I'm in Berlin.

Definitely recommended, nostalgia meets delicious food made in the GDR. The “Current Camera” and “The Black Channel” are on TV. On the walls there are photos of Walter Ulbricht, Erich Honecker, etc. Fast and eloquent service.

We were in the Volkskammer for the first time last weekend. We came across this restaurant through the Internet and, as old Ossis, we were looking forward to the journey into the past and the experiences that came with it. To be on the safe side, we reserved the seats - and that was a good thing! When you entered the place you didn't know where to look first, there was something to discover everywhere, memories associated with it everywhere. We were served and looked after attentively by a very friendly service person named Janette. We ate roast beef, beef roulade with Thuringian dumplings and steak with spicy meat and cheese gratin, all very tasty and recommended. For dessert there were cream puffs with hot cherries and whipped cream - a dream! We will definitely come back. All the best to the team!

Terrible service and way of handling the wait. Didn't get to eat there in the end but not sure I would have wanted to seeing how I was treated. Told me to wait in the sofa next to entrance without any explaination or any estimated waiting time since apparently it was busy (saw many tables empty but maybe they were reserved. I can understand that). Came back with a menu for me to read meanwhile. And then I was completely forgotten for 15min until waitress shows up "did you order yet?" What do you mean? I AM NOT EVEN PROPERLY SEATED I was in the "waiting area" not even seated at a table I asked then : "Am I gonna eat there?" And she has the audacity to tell me "yes probably " I don't want to eat on the floor in the entrance area next to the toilet ma'am ?? If you couldn't accommodate me, let me know from the beginning. It would have been less frustrating for everyone and would have saved 20min of my time. This was very disrespectful.

I was the only native West German in this East German restaurant with friends. It was fun and delicious with excellent service. A lot of fun.

Yesterday I was a guest with my parents, with at least 35 to 50 years+ of “experience” with GDR gastronomy. Put right in front. It was a great evening with delicious food. Of course, some of them taste different from what you know at home when mom cooks. You just have to get involved with the idea and great service. We will definitely be happy to come back.

Oh dear, I'm an Ossi and I've never been to this restaurant...why? It's cult and a must-visit place...it brings back memories - amazing! And the food, I had spiced meat and liver - respect to the chef...like my mother used to make...the atmosphere, you have to see it and remember how it was back then...of course you don't want certain things back, but it's still okay to reminisce...we were a group of seven and had a great afternoon. Even the red chairs, some of them worn out, are reminiscent of the East. Big praise for the overall package at this place. IRON!

Food was great, ambience too. The condition eventually subsided. We don't know why, but we think it has something to do with the fact that the lady couldn't handle the EC reader. However, the customers can't do anything about it and you shouldn't leave it out.

We were there on a Sunday afternoon. Of course, the obligatory “You will be placed” could not be missing. However, the greeting was, as expected, just East German friendly. Up until here everything was pretty authentic. The food, however, was varyingly subpar. 1 meal was lukewarm, another had burnt, black fried potatoes on the plate and a third meal had used oil fries. All in all, it wasn't what we would have liked. A meal was then returned. I'll leave out the rest now, but I would like to point out that the waiter was very friendly and the atmosphere was right. I won't be tempted to visit again.

Ambiente super. Eine richtige Zeltreise. Das war’s dann aber auch schon. Die blonde Kellnerin ist wohl auch in der Zeit stehen geblieben. Sehr unfreundlich. Und das Essen?! Der Schobskasalat war alles andere nur nicht Schobska. Die Sülze ebenso schlecht, die haben wir dann zurück gehen lassen. Was der Kellnerin natürlich gar nicht gefallen hat. Anderes Essen erhalten, was okay war.(wurde nicht extra berechnet) Das Steak au Four war okay, nur die Pommes waren stark überwürzt und zu lange in der Fritöse! Und zu guter letzt: Das Eisbein war wirklich gut!

This place is WORTH SEEING. And not just for older people. Surprisingly, there were also young people there, which we thought was GREAT. Staff very friendly, lovable and competent, which has diminished in some restaurants and we no longer visit them. The guest still feels like a guest in the Volkskammer. The Volkskammer is highly recommended. Thank you that something like this still exists. We will definitely go there when we are in the area again. Really MAGIC. I was surprised that we were ignored. We waited for a place to be shown to us, as the sign said. We were seen. At some point someone came. I didn't find it nostalgic. According to statements you should get a GDR feeling, that wasn't the case. Food came fairly quickly and tasted as you would expect. One of the two waitresses seemed a bit overwhelmed, but I think she was new there. The prices are a bit excessive. The visit was ok.
