St. Benno Gewölberestaurant in Meißen

Amazing atmosphere, but only downstairs, like something out of the Middle Ages. We were glad we ate there. I'm deducting a star because the food was almost cold; normally I'd send it back, but I was too hungry and didn't have the patience. It was still tasty, though. For me, the menu offered too few food choices and too many drinks.

We wanted to see what it was like here. Our curiosity was piqued by the photos of the cellar. It does indeed look very rustic down there. However, part of the cellar is used as a storage room, without any separation from the dining area. This detracts somewhat from the ambiance. The second dining room is on the ground floor; it's small and cozy. If you expect good service, you won't be disappointed. The food was also quite good, though not quite as excellent as in other restaurants. To be fair, I can't give it a perfect score, sorry. Regarding value for money, it's worth noting that it's a bit above average, especially for some drinks. This is likely due to the location. All in all, it wasn't bad, but there's definitely room for improvement.

Everything about this place was spot on. From the delicious dishes to the excellent service. We ate in the garden, so I don't know what the interior design will be like. We all left full and happy. It's a great place.

At the wine festival in Meissen, I treated myself to takeaway food – and I wasn't disappointed. The beef liver was outstanding, a true highlight in terms of taste! Top quality, fair portions, and the chef? Relaxed, friendly, and simply cool. For anyone who wants something really good in a hurry: the best place in town!

We were passing through Meissen. Very nice restaurant, beautifully located on the market square. The vaulted ceiling is beautiful, but the terrace behind it is also very quiet and inviting. The food was highly recommended; they transform classic dishes into something special with refinement. Highly recommended 👍🏻

The restaurant has a rustic charm and invites you to linger. The waitress came to our table promptly. Her demeanor was a bit rude, but not unfriendly. When ordering, we asked for a change of side dishes, which resulted in an additional €2.50 charge.

Very attentive staff, and more than one meal was gluten-free. We had spiced beef and braised chanterelles for starters, and beef liver and juicy roast pork for main courses. Everything tasted excellent; highly recommended. We'll definitely be back.

Unfortunately, our visit to the restaurant was anything but satisfactory. As soon as we entered the outdoor area in the courtyard, we noticed the lack of cleanliness: the tables and chairs hadn't been wiped down and looked sloppy. The seasonal menu with asparagus and schnitzel was particularly disappointing. Unfortunately, the taste wasn't at all convincing. My plate contained only two asparagus spears, while my husband received three – clearly too few for an asparagus menu. The potatoes seemed old and were already covered in an unsightly skin. The hollandaise sauce was tasteless and unfortunately couldn't salvage the overall impression. For a dish advertised as a seasonal specialty, we had expected much more. We probably won't visit the restaurant again.

Fast service. Dishes were immediately marked as gluten-free on the menu. I thought that was great. No long searches for allergens, extra cards or asking the person. And it was delicious too.

Right at the beginning of the new year 2025 we were guests at St. Benno and it was magical! The service was extremely personable and attentive. After an aperitif (rabarber spritz), the food soon arrived. It was beautifully prepared and incredibly tasty. Because we admired the restaurant, we immediately learned about the long and exciting history of the building. It was a lovely evening all round, thank you very much.

We just wanted to eat some soft ice cream. First we had to wait 5 minutes because the employee had to put away ice cream cups and there was a big "groan" even though there were at least 10 left. Then we got a medium ice cream for €3.50, which is a steep price for the fact that the cone was empty. And the ice cream was very tasteless. A few days later in Dresden we got soft ice cream - medium portion - for €2.50 and the waffle was filled. So I can't recommend the soft ice cream, neither in terms of taste, price-performance ratio nor service.

Well, looking at the other reviews, we were probably unlucky with the food. Hopefully it was just because the restaurant would be closed for some time the next day. In detail: Currywurst really tasty Pork schnitzel with chanterelles quite ok. The schnitzel looks very good from the convenient packaging The pork steak was very watery and bland. The side dishes of fried potatoes and hash browns were probably not homemade either. Dessert: Elderberry panna cotta with really delicious. Best of all! The Black Forest cup for 10.00 is served in a plastic cup. Simply horrible! Service: Fast and friendly. Ambiance: The backyard is quiet and hospitable. Price-performance: medium

The service was first class, friendly and attentive. The absolute highlight was the panna cotta, which was simply irresistible. I would love to come back and can only warmly recommend the restaurant!

After a long time I visited the Sankt Benno again and was more than satisfied. I tried a delicious schnitzel with chanterelles, which was excellently prepared. The dish was not only delicious in terms of taste, but also attractively presented. The staff was first class - friendly, attentive and always concerned about the well-being of the guests. I would particularly like to emphasize the cleanliness of the toilets, which seemed very well maintained. The Sankt Benno offers high quality German food at fair prices. Here you really get what you pay for: excellent cuisine and a pleasant stay. I can recommend the restaurant and am already looking forward to my next visit.

If you want to watch what's going on in Meißen, sit at the tables in front of the restaurant and if you want to feel some peace and holiday feeling, you have great opportunities to linger in the beer garden at the back. Today I ate the best liver of my life here. The service is super friendly and the atmosphere at the market is wonderful. There is also a cozy beer garden.

We got a nice table in the backyard for lunch. The ambience is great. We had the schnitzel with asparagus and potatoes, but I actually thought the schnitzel was run of the mill and the potatoes weren't great. But the asparagus and the sauce were great… my lady had the salmon tartare with potato rosti. That was super tasty! The tomato soup was also great. The rump steak was also really good! All in all, all the plates were nice to look at. The service was average. Would go again

After all, it's a restaurant where you cook and don't just heat up the finished products. I have to admit, this is the best beef I've ever eaten in Meissen. Red cabbage is excellent. This evening we were in the yard for the first time. It's quiet there, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Service quick, attentive and friendly. The food tasted really good.

Great to sit outside overlooking the busy market. The spiced meat was delicious and just right for a small hunger! Friendly and quick service.

Very nice, good middle-class restaurant, inside and out. However, we were at the back on the terrace where you can eat in peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the old market. Very nice and friendly staff. We once had the smoked salmon tartare, which was very tasty, and the beef roll, which was very tender and the sauce didn't just consist of fat. It was worth a visit and I would dine there again at any time.

According to the menu, I ordered a juicy sirloin steak medium rare for €28.40. I received a lukewarm piece of meat that was neither juicy nor medium rare. The waiter was very friendly and accommodating. The cook, and probably also the boss, was less insightful. He is probably so convinced of his work that I was presented with the same piece again with the bad characteristics. Well, that's his business, but he has two fewer guests on our annual visit to Meißen. But he probably won't notice. Subterranean quality for the price.

After a very funny carriage ride, the friendly coachman recommended the “Bennohaus” to us. Super good, regional food at fair prices. The quiet inner courtyard allows you to really switch off. Gladly again.

On our trip to Meissen today, we had a purely coincidental encounter with the innkeeper and owner. Over a cup of hot apple juice, we had a nice conversation. The kiosk on the market square offers delicious food Bratwurst, game and curry bratwurst. There are also various cold and hot drinks. The homemade curry sauce is awesome! We recommend! Ein sehr schönes Restaurant direkt am Marktplatz von Meißen. Das Essen ist sehr lecker und die Leute im Service machen ihren Job prima. Ein Besuch ist sehr zu empfehlen.

Die Atmosphäre im Keller war urig und das Essen schmackhaft. Allerdings waren wir vom Preis-Leistungsverhältnis nicht so begeistert. Die Portionen waren im Vergleich zu dem in der Gegend Üblichen eher klein und vier schmale Brotstreifen zur Suppe kosteten EUR 2 extra.

Wir waren als Familie zum Mittagessen und es war echt lecker. Sehr freundliches Personal und wir werden auf jeden Fall wieder kommen.

Bedienung zuvorkommend und freundlich. Zügige Bedienung. Getränke und Essen ließen keine keine Wünsche offen. Können wir gern weiter empfehlen.

Aktuell gibt es einen Federweiser. Sehr süß und bekömmlich. Lokal befindet sich vor der Frauenkirche und somit Mitte in der unteren Altstadt. Bei Feierlichkeiten ist man mittendrin. Preislich völlig in Ordnung.

Ate lunch here. Smoked Salmon Tartare with salad, plus some cucumber and potato salad. Both were very pleasant to eat. Just as I would expect for a lunch service in a German tourist town. Service could have been a lot quicker. Waiting staff seemed rushed. Worth a visit if you’re passing by.

Sehr ruhiger schattiger Hinterhof mit zuvorkommend Servicepersonal. Wunderbar leckere Tomatensuppe mit Mozzarellakugeln und Sahne überzeugte ebenso wie die wunderbare Wildwurst mit Kartoffelstampf und Weißkraut. Auch geht das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis in Ordnung.

Wir hatten hier eine Familienfeier. Der Staff und auch der Chef waren jederzeit ansprechbar, freundlich und bereit zu helfen, sogar über das Normalmaß hinaus. Eine tolle Erfahrung!! Das Essen war mehr als ausreichend und lecker. Alles in allem: gutes Essen, große Auswahl, kompetente und freundliche Bedienung - was will man mehr?
