Restaurant "zum Franz" in Bad Schandau

We spontaneously dropped in on a Thursday evening. Even at 8:30 p.m., it was still packed, but the atmosphere in the restaurant was noticeably good and cheerful. We managed to get a table and were served promptly. The wine recommendation wasn't quite our favorite, but that's obviously a personal preference. We didn't get a chance to try it beforehand, though. The food we ordered arrived quickly and was very tasty. The portions were large enough to fill us up, but not too full. So we also treated ourselves to one of the warm apple strudels. Very delicious! We really liked it and can definitely recommend "zum Franz"!

My favourite in 4 days Bad Schandau. Excellent service. Very attentive. Also inside is pleasant. It is small so best book a table unless you are a solo diner.

Das Restaurant ist steril und einfach eingerichtet. Es gibt nur wenige Sitzplätze. Somit war das Restaurant bei unserem Besuch voll belegt. Die Karte ist durch einfache und bürgerliche Gerichte geprägt. Im Wesentlichen Schnitzel und Schnitzel. Für ein Schnitzel bezahlt man 23€. Für die einfache Ausführung also sehr teuer. Der von mir probierte Riesling ist unterirdisch. Insgesamt eine Enttäuschung, aber noch gerade so ok.

The food was very tasty, the portions were huge, too big for me. Quite expensive in terms of price. Local dishes so you can try German cuisine from this region. The waiter only knows German, but with the help of a translator you can communicate.

We liked it. When we are in the area again we will eat there again.

One of the few restaurants that doesn't announce that the kitchen closes shortly after 8 p.m. We got a table at short notice. The food came very quickly and was very plentiful. The taste was absolutely fine without too much sophistication. Overall, absolutely worth the price and recommended.

I can only warmly recommend this restaurant to everyone, the service is very friendly and helpful. The food is prepared and served with a lot of love. I was there on 2 different weeks and wasn't disappointed both times. Everything is prepared in-house and not bought ready-made. I attribute this to the fact that the apple strudel was literally smoking with freshness. There is also some music playing in the background at a very pleasant volume. I would go there every time 👍

Small but nice is best. Super tasty food, reasonably priced and friendly service. Ideally you reserve in advance otherwise it will be difficult to get a table. Were not the first and certainly not the last time here 🙂

Saxon Switzerland is not exactly the mecca for vegan/vegetarian nutrition. It's all the more pleasing that the "Franz" looks beyond meat-free dishes and serves an excellent vegan "Szegedin goulash" with dumplings, which is a very enjoyable, different interpretation of Eastern European cuisine. There is also a top selection of beer and wine. 👍

We wanted to eat at Franz's, so we called at 6 p.m. to politely ask for a table for two people. Patzig replied: "So we can't make reservations anymore, come by and see if there's anything available." I didn't understand why that wasn't possible anymore, but okay, I wanted the salad and then we went straight there. There were still 2 tables available there (!) but when I asked for a table for 2 people I immediately shook my head: "No, not at the moment" I felt very crazy then. Why couldn't you say in a friendly manner on the phone that all the tables were reserved? That would have been friendly and I could have saved myself the journey. It's a shame, given the very good reviews so far, I also expect good service. I also have to criticize sometimes.

We ate here with our 2 children on April 9th, 2025. Around 7 p.m. and all the other restaurants in Bad Schandau were full… luckily! Otherwise we would probably have walked past “zum Franz”. We were greeted very friendly and given a table. The children had schnitzel and cheese spaetzle. A senior portion was kindly offered as it might be too much for children. Both were very satisfied! My wife and I had steak with seasoned meat and cheese gratinated and the knuckle. We both enjoyed it very much! The knuckle had a lot of bone and a nice crispy crust. To say goodbye, our children received lollipops in the shape of a pipe. Of course we tried them out straight away, which immediately put a smile on the woman who served us❤️! Thank you for the nice service and the good food!

We were guests here on March 8, 2025 and had a good meal. The ladies were very attentive despite the full house. Food was good. That was a nice evening.

Friendly service. The two of us were there spontaneously during the week and just got one of the last tables. In high season you should make a reservation. The food was fresh and delicious.

Die Speisekarte ist nicht besonders lang, aber die angebotenen Gerichte sind es wert, dass man ALLE einmal probiert hat. Es gibt zwei Gerichte, die der Küchenshef besonders empfielt und die Portionen würden auch einem schwer arbeitenden Waldarbeiter genügen. Der Service ist zuvorkommend und empathisch. Wir haben uns hier sehr wohl gefühlt und kommen mit Sicherheit wieder

I couldn't believe my luck. In addition to the traditional (meat-heavy) dishes, there are also vegetarian and even vegan dishes on the menu. The vegan goulash was great, as was the service and the ambience!

Upscale atmosphere, great food and friendly staff. It was a great evening. But it's not easy to get a free table...

Today I ate the schnitzel with cream mushrooms and fries. I don't want to complain, but the mushrooms tasted like they came from a can. The fries were good but the schnitzel still had a chain on it, unfortunately the piece was tough. Good service and chic atmosphere!

The three of us spontaneously decided to go to the “zum Franz” restaurant. After a short phone call we were able to come over straight away. The service was very friendly and careful. The food came quickly and was very tasty. Price/performance is right here. We'll definitely come back again.

We went spontaneously and got a table in the small but cozy room. A real stroke of luck! There was a vegetarian and a vegan dish and both were so delicious! Incredibly good! Prices were absolutely fair and we got our food incredibly quickly. Tip top and definitely recommended.

We were in Bad Schandau for the Nicolaus weekend and were looking for a place to eat, but almost everywhere the kitchen was already closed, then we found the Restaurant Zum Franz there's still so much going on. When we went in there was still a table free so we were allowed to sit down. The staff was super friendly and the food was first class. I haven't had such a delicious sauerbraten in a long time. Great, keep it up.

Very nice atmosphere. Great music. Nice service. The room was already bright. The Dresden Sauerbraten was excellent. You could mash the meat with your tongue. There was a lot of sauce. Small plus point, the wardrobe. You'll definitely find your jacket again. ;-)

Small pub with hearty home cooking. I had the offer of the day: roast pork with beer sauce & sauerkraut. Tastes like grandma's, buttery.

We were there a total of 3 times and everything was always absolutely top. Food was just perfect. Prepared very quickly and delicious, very attentive service. Here the boss serves himself. An absolute must if you are nearby. We'll definitely be back. 👍

We spontaneously visited the very busy restaurant on a weekday around 9 p.m. We received a very friendly welcome and were given the last available table. We were immediately provided with menus and the drinks order was taken immediately. The restaurant was very attractive and exuded a certain cosiness. The selection of food and drinks was more than sufficient. We had pumpkin cream soup and bratwursts with sauerkraut and potatoes. The sauce was brought separately in a gravy boat (absolute plus point). The food was tasty and rounded off the whole package. An absolute recommendation!

I ate at this restaurant a year ago. Back then it was “Barthel’s”. The bar is set very high for service. The menu is sufficient and we enjoyed it very much. We'd love to come back!! It was very nice here again on November 1st, 2024. The service was very good and it tasted excellent

Highly recommended! The knuckle was a poem, very tender, juicy, not over-salted! Even the small cocktail tomato was a highlight, as if someone had inoculated it with garlic oil, super delicious! The schnitzel for the children was also very tasty fried in butter and the little one must have liked the bratwurst too, he didn't give anything away 😆 We spontaneously decided to eat there and unfortunately we couldn't get a seat inside (reserving is an advantage). That's fine for us, we were "underdressed" with our hiking clothes anyway! There were blankets on every chair in the backyard! We had a lovely evening, would love to come back!

A nice little restaurant with a harmonious atmosphere. The food was OK. Unfortunately, the service wasn't that attentive and was very unfriendly, especially on the phone. A reservation is necessary in advance. Eating out spontaneously is difficult.

Very great atmosphere, harmonious furnishings, small but very nice. The boss himself welcomed us and organized a place for us at short notice because we came spontaneously. The menu selection was excellent for us, we weren't overwhelmed. The food was served quickly and hot and was beautifully presented. We can only recommend Franz...we would love to come back

Everything is right here! Very nice, simple but stylish atmosphere. Excellent quality of cuisine and great service. You feel welcome and comfortable. Reservations recommended. In front of the entrance there are a few bar tables for smoking breaks, also nicely decorated.

Delicious garlic soup. Incredible taste. You definitely have to try this soup. Unfortunately, the main course we ordered, i.e. a chicken breast gratinated with tomatoes and mozzarella, was too salty. The portions of the main courses were very large. Cheap prices. It's difficult to get a table, but managed on Friday evening without prior reservation.

The vegan goulash is fantastic! It is very cozy in the inner courtyard/beer garden, we would love to come back.

This is by far the best place we ate in Bad Schandau and the surrounding area. Extremely tasty and plentiful. The small interior appears warm and cozy thanks to the indirect lighting. The courtyard alone is a bit uncomfortable due to the lighting under the umbrellas. We received very friendly service and would love to come back!

Good food at reasonable prices. We had chanterelles with dumplings and mixed goulash also with Bohemian dumplings. Good taste. The waiter was very attentive and quick. The beer garden in the back yard could use some sprucing up in terms of ambience. Overall rating Very Good from us.

We can highly recommend the restaurant! The food was bombastic and the portions were perfect or a little too much (we had the schnitzel with fried potatoes and the tagliatelle with chanterelles and cream sauce) :) They even responded to special requests and you could pack up the leftovers without any problems. The perfect end to our day of hiking!

3 stars because overall it was cozy and there was a vegan dish. In terms of taste, there would be a lot more in it and it's a bit strange that there were only 2 potato dumplings. I wasn't really full and I don't understand why people save on something so cheap. Since there was no vegan dressing, I ordered a salad with vinegar and oil, but it came completely without dressing. You can actually make delicious vegan things with normal kitchen equipment if you simply use the right basic ingredients. It's ok as an option if you want to go out for a "normal" meal in the rural area, but you shouldn't expect too much at the moment.

A clear recommendation!!! From the service (no matter which one) to the food, we were very satisfied! The service is quick, attentive and helpful. That's exactly how it has to be, so that you feel comfortable as a guest and are happy to come back. You can also reorder something and there is also a senior portion, for example. The quality of the food, the ambience, the service = a great all-round package. If we end up in Bad Schandau again, we would be happy to order a table (since there aren't that many seats inside, you should book in advance). We were there three times and left the restaurant satisfied and full three times.

The food is great and the service is friendly. The chanterelle noodles and the schnitzel with mushrooms are highly recommended.

The two of us ate here without a reservation. Right at the opening, things worked out great with free places. After us, it quickly became fuller outside in the beer garden. The service was quick and the food came to the table quickly. I have never tasted such delicious spicy chicken meat. And there was no radicchio in my salad. So if I could choose the best restaurant in these Kotěhůlky, it would be this one. The beer is great (until now I wouldn't say that the locals know how to brew beer), the wild boar and the roulade were on the Nobel Prize, and the service was first-class (he was Czech, maybe that's why) 😎 I'm not even surprised that it's still full, rightfully so 👍

The restaurant was clean and tidy. The staff were also nice. The food was very good decorated and tasty. Portions were not very full, but this is something personal since we eat too much at home :)

“Home cooking” at the highest level! Nice restaurant, nice service, very tasty food and good value for money!

We went to “Franz’s” for dinner today (attracted by the good reviews). Unfortunately the worst service we have experienced in a long time. The waiter (middle aged) was absolutely rude. When we arrived he walked past us several times without even looking at us or the other waiting guests. After waiting, when we sat down at an empty table where there were still empty glasses, he whispered to us a mumbled “not finished” along with a provocative hand gesture. The young woman who came to our table to clear the glasses didn't speak or look at us either. Even as the meal continued, the waiter didn't speak a complete sentence to us. (E.g. when asked whether we had to go in to pay - "hmmm - in" Every now and then an older lady (very friendly) brought food to the tables. The waiter made a fool of this in front of us guests, apparently he didn't want this.? Unfortunately, goulash was still very tough and should have been stewed a little more. The other dishes were okay. All in all, the unprofessional service at the time of our visit unfortunately overshadowed it. That's why I can't recommend it any further. A pity!

Mitten in Bad Schandau fanden wir dieses tolle Restaurant. Wir konnten im Garten essen, dieser war lauschig und freundlich eingerichtet. Das Personal war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das frische Bier wurde rasch serviert. Die Karte bietet ein übersichtliches Angebot an, auch für Kinder. Zudem gibt es täglich wechselnde Angebote. Unser Essen war sehr schön angerichtet, grosszügig und vor allem Geschmacklich top! Das Rindergulasch schmeckte gut abgeschmeckt, die Spätzle frisch und der Beilagensalat mot frischem Dill war ebenfalls prima. Ein Restaurant mit fairen Preisen und guter Küche. Danke vielmals - wohl die beste Empfehung für Bad Schandau

I think I called like 10 times over two days at different hours (as advised on the website), e-mailed twice and once I finally managed for someone to pick up they had zero English. I was trying to book a table in my simple German asking for Thursday, Friday and Saturday and all I heard back was „nein, nein, nein”. When we came in, there were a few free tables so we decided to give it a try but it was a huge disappointment. The potatoes did not taste fresh and the butter that the schnitzel was fried on was overpowering. Payment by cash only.

Das Restaurant “Zum Franz” ist einfach hervorragend. Das Personal ist extrem freundlich und aufmerksam, die Preise sind fair und die Portionsgrößen sind sehr großzügig. Jede Mahlzeit hier ist ein Genuss. Sehr empfehlenswert!

We were lucky and spontaneously got a table. You should reserve the application to judge in advance. The schnitzel was very tasty and the price was reasonable!

Good taste-full food ,but we came there to have a nice evening but the food came so quickly that we where there just for something more than 30 minutes .....that was a little bit disappointing

For me the best restaurant we visited during our stay. The service was outstanding despite the high volume. Extraordinarily delicious food, delicious drinks and a harmonious ambience invited us to “come back”. We recommend!

Nice restaurant with the possibility of eating in the courtyard. The chairs were a bit uncomfortable and we had to wait quite a long time for our food... Guests who came after us had their food quite quickly, apparently the knuckle we ordered took a while. But it was very, very good in terms of taste and price!

We went there for dinner with our four-legged friend. We were there at 5 p.m. (right when it opened) and sat in the courtyard. At 5:30 p.m. the restaurant was already full. It is therefore advisable to come early or make a reservation. The service was calm, friendly and attentive. The food came quickly and was hot. And oh dear God it tasted good! We had sauerbraten and pork steak ou four. Gladly again at any time!

The waiter is horrible, he just pretends he doesn’t saw us and refuses to talks to us for no reason!

Went there for dinner, you should definitely reserve at least 1 day in advance, it is a very popular restaurant. The steak au four with croquettes was a delight: by far the best thing I've ever eaten. Great meat quality and very tasty.

Das Essen war sehr lecker und schön angerichtet. Das Lokal war sehr sauber, die Bedienung freundlich. Da das Lokal eher klein ist, würde ich reservieren empfehlen.

Steak ou four and pork schnitzel with fries: perfect amount - a lot - for a reasonable price in the current price range. The cellar beer is also highly recommended. Nice staff and nice outside ambience. Despite it being busy, service was quick. Gladly again and recommended.
