Great restaurant with very friendly staff and delicious food!

Good food, but staff do not speak English

Personally, I found the portions to be small. The Dresden Sauerbraten came in two very thin slices and with two small dumplings. The side salad was nothing special and unloving. The staff wasn't particularly friendly when we had questions. I wouldn't go here again.

We received a very warm welcome and immediately felt at home. The rump steak was cooked to perfection, and the other dishes at the table also left us with great satisfaction. The food arrived very quickly, and the service was extremely friendly and efficient. The ambiance was optimized to the best of the available space :) The only improvement we could think of would be pencils and something to color in for the kids, but given the short wait, that might not be necessary.

I have to say nothing but positive things about the restaurant! The food had the expected Bohemian influence and was extremely delicious. Customer requests were also catered for. Definitely worth a visit, but it's worth reserving a table the day before!

Amazing food at a very reasonable price. We were lucky to get a table, although we only called around 3-4pm on the day itself. Hence, do book in advance to avoid disappointment. The kitchen and front of the house service crew try their very best to make sure everyone is being served timely and get sufficient attention. So do bring along some patience.

I highly recommend it, but please make a reservation. Small, straightforward menu. The food was very tasty and the drinks were well chilled. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. After dinner, the hallway or passageway is a great place to relax.

You immediately feel welcome in this rather small and unassuming, incredibly friendly and familiar atmosphere. It's the kind of place that makes you feel right at home, and that's exactly what makes the visit so special. It's located right on the main road, and if I had to point out a drawback, it would be the lack of parking or parking spaces that I'm not aware of, but that's the case everywhere in Bad Schandau. The food is simply fantastic! Here you'll find authentic home cooking, prepared with heart and soul. Every dish tastes like it came straight from grandma's kitchen – hearty, aromatic, and full of flavor. The portions are generous, so everyone will be satisfied, and the quality of the ingredients is excellent. The service is also top-notch – attentive, warm, and always with a smile. You can feel that a true passion for hospitality is lived here. If you're looking for a place to relax, enjoy delicious, authentic home cooking, and simply have a good time, this is the place for you. The restaurant's prices are mid-range, with dishes costing between €20 and €30, which is perfectly reasonable for the quality. The wait time for your chosen meal is also perfectly acceptable, averaging 15 to 20 minutes, which is absolutely reasonable. Staff bluntly ignored us after inquiring about a table and waiting patiently. In the end we left. It seems this place doesn’t appreciate new customers.

The cuisine is purely local, with the pork shank being very good and a huge portion. I recommend booking, but if it's full, tables will free up quickly.

The restaurant "Zum Franz" seems to be very popular. Based on the many positive reviews, we decided to try it out. I recommend making a reservation by phone in advance. We really liked the service. All the staff are not only friendly but also very attentive. The ambiance: It's clean, and there are pictures of the region on the walls. Food: The food is delicious! Our food arrived quickly. However, the portion sizes vary greatly. Some dishes were generous and would have left you feeling full. However, we could have easily eaten two plates of our food. The sauces for some dishes could have been more original and were reminiscent of ready-made sauces. We would definitely come back, but we would choose different dishes.

The goulash was excellent. Kudos to the chef! We only waited 15 minutes, so it was super quick! The wine was also excellent.

The best food during a few days in Saxony. The cuisine is correct, but not outstanding (if you can talk about outstanding cuisine in this price range). But nothing would have happened if the chef had surprised. Generally, a well-deserved 3.7 that would have indicated a 4.

We spontaneously decided on Franz. Since we were out and about in Bad Schandau and the surrounding area, we arrived right at 5:00 PM. And that was a good thing, because after about 20 minutes, the small beer garden in the courtyard was already packed with customers. We ate goulash with red cabbage and Bohemian dumplings there, something we'd been craving for a while. And it was incredibly delicious... Franz is highly recommended! And the service is also excellent and very friendly!

I got a table for four on Friday evening without a reservation. Very friendly service, great food (goulash and schnitzel), child-friendly, and specially adapted children's dishes in a great size.

Canned mushrooms.... Visited here because of the good reviews. Overall, it was OK, but unfortunately not up to the high rating. We had two schnitzels, one with fries and creamed mushrooms, and the other with asparagus and potatoes. I ordered the fries extra crispy, which didn't work out. They were limp and greasy. My schnitzel, however, had been in the pan too long on one side and came out very dark. On top of that, they served mushrooms from a jar or can. I couldn't understand that. 🤷 The hollandaise sauce was probably also from a packet, which wasn't up to scratch either and had a strange taste. Our visit wasn't bad, but I really expected better, based on the presentation and the reviews. The service was friendly and attentive. The radio in the kitchen also plays music for the guests in the courtyard.

This is best restaurant for ours 6 days in this area, food is great, service is perfect, drinks are good and prices are fare

We spontaneously dropped in on a Thursday evening. Even at 8:30 p.m., it was still packed, but the atmosphere in the restaurant was noticeably good and cheerful. We managed to get a table and were served promptly. The wine recommendation wasn't quite our favorite, but that's obviously a personal preference. We didn't get a chance to try it beforehand, though. The food we ordered arrived quickly and was very tasty. The portions were large enough to fill us up, but not too full. So we also treated ourselves to one of the warm apple strudels. Very delicious! We really liked it and can definitely recommend "zum Franz"!

Das Restaurant ist steril und einfach eingerichtet. Es gibt nur wenige Sitzplätze. Somit war das Restaurant bei unserem Besuch voll belegt. Die Karte ist durch einfache und bürgerliche Gerichte geprägt. Im Wesentlichen Schnitzel und Schnitzel. Für ein Schnitzel bezahlt man 23€. Für die einfache Ausführung also sehr teuer. Der von mir probierte Riesling ist unterirdisch. Insgesamt eine Enttäuschung, aber noch gerade so ok.

The food was very tasty, the portions were huge, too big for me. Quite expensive in terms of price. Local dishes so you can try German cuisine from this region. The waiter only knows German, but with the help of a translator you can communicate.

We liked it. When we are in the area again we will eat there again.

I can only warmly recommend this restaurant to everyone, the service is very friendly and helpful. The food is prepared and served with a lot of love. I was there on 2 different weeks and wasn't disappointed both times. Everything is prepared in-house and not bought ready-made. I attribute this to the fact that the apple strudel was literally smoking with freshness. There is also some music playing in the background at a very pleasant volume. I would go there every time 👍

One of the few restaurants that doesn't announce that the kitchen closes shortly after 8 p.m. We got a table at short notice. The food came very quickly and was very plentiful. The taste was absolutely fine without too much sophistication. Overall, absolutely worth the price and recommended.

Small but nice is best. Super tasty food, reasonably priced and friendly service. Ideally you reserve in advance otherwise it will be difficult to get a table. Were not the first and certainly not the last time here 🙂

Saxon Switzerland is not exactly the mecca for vegan/vegetarian nutrition. It's all the more pleasing that the "Franz" looks beyond meat-free dishes and serves an excellent vegan "Szegedin goulash" with dumplings, which is a very enjoyable, different interpretation of Eastern European cuisine. There is also a top selection of beer and wine. 👍

We wanted to eat at Franz's, so we called at 6 p.m. to politely ask for a table for two people. Patzig replied: "So we can't make reservations anymore, come by and see if there's anything available." I didn't understand why that wasn't possible anymore, but okay, I wanted the salad and then we went straight there. There were still 2 tables available there (!) but when I asked for a table for 2 people I immediately shook my head: "No, not at the moment" I felt very crazy then. Why couldn't you say in a friendly manner on the phone that all the tables were reserved? That would have been friendly and I could have saved myself the journey. It's a shame, given the very good reviews so far, I also expect good service. I also have to criticize sometimes.

We ate here with our 2 children on April 9th, 2025. Around 7 p.m. and all the other restaurants in Bad Schandau were full… luckily! Otherwise we would probably have walked past “zum Franz”. We were greeted very friendly and given a table. The children had schnitzel and cheese spaetzle. A senior portion was kindly offered as it might be too much for children. Both were very satisfied! My wife and I had steak with seasoned meat and cheese gratinated and the knuckle. We both enjoyed it very much! The knuckle had a lot of bone and a nice crispy crust. To say goodbye, our children received lollipops in the shape of a pipe. Of course we tried them out straight away, which immediately put a smile on the woman who served us❤️! Thank you for the nice service and the good food!

Die Speisekarte ist nicht besonders lang, aber die angebotenen Gerichte sind es wert, dass man ALLE einmal probiert hat. Es gibt zwei Gerichte, die der Küchenshef besonders empfielt und die Portionen würden auch einem schwer arbeitenden Waldarbeiter genügen. Der Service ist zuvorkommend und empathisch. Wir haben uns hier sehr wohl gefühlt und kommen mit Sicherheit wieder

Today I ate the schnitzel with cream mushrooms and fries. I don't want to complain, but the mushrooms tasted like they came from a can. The fries were good but the schnitzel still had a chain on it, unfortunately the piece was tough. Good service and chic atmosphere!

We went spontaneously and got a table in the small but cozy room. A real stroke of luck! There was a vegetarian and a vegan dish and both were so delicious! Incredibly good! Prices were absolutely fair and we got our food incredibly quickly. Tip top and definitely recommended.

We were in Bad Schandau for the Nicolaus weekend and were looking for a place to eat, but almost everywhere the kitchen was already closed, then we found the Restaurant Zum Franz there's still so much going on. When we went in there was still a table free so we were allowed to sit down. The staff was super friendly and the food was first class. I haven't had such a delicious sauerbraten in a long time. Great, keep it up.

Very nice atmosphere. Great music. Nice service. The room was already bright. The Dresden Sauerbraten was excellent. You could mash the meat with your tongue. There was a lot of sauce. Small plus point, the wardrobe. You'll definitely find your jacket again. ;-)

Small pub with hearty home cooking. I had the offer of the day: roast pork with beer sauce & sauerkraut. Tastes like grandma's, buttery.

We were there a total of 3 times and everything was always absolutely top. Food was just perfect. Prepared very quickly and delicious, very attentive service. Here the boss serves himself. An absolute must if you are nearby. We'll definitely be back. 👍

We spontaneously visited the very busy restaurant on a weekday around 9 p.m. We received a very friendly welcome and were given the last available table. We were immediately provided with menus and the drinks order was taken immediately. The restaurant was very attractive and exuded a certain cosiness. The selection of food and drinks was more than sufficient. We had pumpkin cream soup and bratwursts with sauerkraut and potatoes. The sauce was brought separately in a gravy boat (absolute plus point). The food was tasty and rounded off the whole package. An absolute recommendation!

I ate at this restaurant a year ago. Back then it was “Barthel’s”. The bar is set very high for service. The menu is sufficient and we enjoyed it very much. We'd love to come back!! It was very nice here again on November 1st, 2024. The service was very good and it tasted excellent

Highly recommended! The knuckle was a poem, very tender, juicy, not over-salted! Even the small cocktail tomato was a highlight, as if someone had inoculated it with garlic oil, super delicious! The schnitzel for the children was also very tasty fried in butter and the little one must have liked the bratwurst too, he didn't give anything away 😆 We spontaneously decided to eat there and unfortunately we couldn't get a seat inside (reserving is an advantage). That's fine for us, we were "underdressed" with our hiking clothes anyway! There were blankets on every chair in the backyard! We had a lovely evening, would love to come back!

Very great atmosphere, harmonious furnishings, small but very nice. The boss himself welcomed us and organized a place for us at short notice because we came spontaneously. Everything is right here! Very nice, simple but stylish atmosphere. Excellent quality of cuisine and great service. You feel welcome and comfortable. Reservations recommended. In front of the entrance there are a few bar tables for smoking breaks, also nicely decorated.

Delicious garlic soup. Incredible taste. You definitely have to try this soup. Unfortunately, the main course we ordered, i.e. a chicken breast gratinated with tomatoes and mozzarella, was too salty.
