Restaurant Ratsschänke in Marburg

Without a reservation, there are no seats available during dinner times. We made a reservation four weeks in advance as we were traveling with eight people. The menu is short and straightforward. The dishes we chose (dark beer roast, schnitzel, and cream roast) were of good quality, with a delicious side salad. The service was excellent. Visited on October 10, 2025

The food was very good. Very good, honest German cuisine. The Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) were wonderfully cheesy and creamy. The Schwarzbierbraten (dark beer roast) was spicy and tender. The price/performance ratio was also good. The service by the young lady was very friendly and attentive. All in all, a lovely, cozy, rustic restaurant right on the market square. Highly recommended!

The Ratsschänke, located right next to Marburg's venerable town hall, is the best place in town for lovers of good German cuisine. I've known the restaurant for over 20 years and am always delighted by the consistently delicious, high-quality food and friendly service. It's definitely worth making a reservation during the colder months, as there aren't many tables available inside. In the summer, when the weather's nice, you can sit outside in front of the town hall with a view of the lively activity on the market square. Simply lovely!

We dined here last night and this afternoon. The service was very good both times, very friendly, and attentive. Yesterday, the weather was nice, and we were able to sit outside. We ordered Frankfurter Grüne Sauce with boiled eggs and boiled potatoes, and Boiled Tafelspitz with Frankfurter Grüne Sauce and boiled potatoes, along with two beers. The drinks were served quickly, and we only had to wait a reasonable amount of time for our ordered dishes. We enjoyed both dishes very much. The Tafelspitz was beautifully tender and completely fat-free. This afternoon, the weather wasn't ideal for eating outside, so we sat inside the restaurant. The waitress was great. I was immediately given a rug for my minor health issue. We ordered two beers and just two beef consommés with pancake strips and root vegetables. The drinks and food were served quickly. We also enjoyed the beef consommé very much. The prices are reasonable. We say thank you.

We really enjoyed the restaurant. We had mushrooms with spaetzle and Frankfurt green sauce with potatoes and egg. Everything was freshly made and with love. The young lady serving was extremely nice and did a great job.

2024: A nice little restaurant. We sat outside on the edge of the market square in early summer (June). Very cozy. The waitress was a bit overwhelmed but very friendly. The schnitzel was good. The cream of asparagus soup was delicious. Update 2025: The cream of potato soup with salmon is highly recommended. One waitress was great. The other was a bit overwhelmed. I think they shouldn't answer the question about the missing side dish by saying that they don't have three hands and the side dish doesn't arrive for the next 10 minutes, even though other guests get their meals completely afterwards. But that could also be an issue with the kitchen organization. Several dishes arrived without side dishes, which were then brought later, which unfortunately seems very unprofessional. Therefore, only 3 points overall.

Absolutely disgusting place! I ordered schnitzel with fries, but only got the schnitzel, no fries, and no spaetzle either. The manager and the senior manager said I was just too stupid to order. I had to pay the full price and was insulted because I didn't have enough change. The toilets are moldy.

Four of us ate on Monday evening: Prague schnitzel, pepper cream schnitzel, black beer roast... Simple, down-to-earth dishes of good quality and very tasty👨‍🍳 Plus confident, friendly, and proactive (blankets in the windy outdoor area!!) service👌 The espressos were also first-class; some Italians could learn a thing or two from them☺️ Conclusion: This is how gastronomy works😎 Highly recommended 👍

Very tasty food, special requests regarding the side dishes were easy, service was great, we would be happy to come back the next time we visit Marburg.

This is what happened: Called on Friday lunchtime, wanted to reserve a table for three people, 7 p.m. The gentleman on the phone, employee, friendly tone, had to ask the boss, who then said reservations weren't necessary, we should just come by at the time we wanted, there would certainly be a table available. So we arrived at the restaurant around 7 p.m. on Friday evening. The terrace was open, many tables were free, but all were reserved. I then asked a waitress whether it was really like that or whether I was mistaken and asked to speak to the boss after confirming that all tables were occupied. He had just come out of the restaurant and I calmly explained the situation to him, that we had spoken on the phone at lunchtime and that he had assured us that we would not need a reservation. The boss didn't seem to have much to say about it, other than a simple: "Tough luck." If you treat potential guests like this who are interested in the restaurant and want to leave money there, you don't have to be surprised by irritation and bad reviews. Too bad! The food looks good in the pictures, as does the ambience, but unfortunately this was denied to us.

We had a very tasty meal today. Pepper schnitzel with side dishes and leg of lamb with bacon beans and potato gratin. Price performance justified. Always my pleasure

01/2025: 3 stars The restaurant is very rustic and decorated in an old tavern style and is located in the upper town of Marburg at the town hall. The benches are very small for two people. The service was very nice and attentive. The entrance has a small step and the toilets are in the basement (attention for wheelchair users), there is also a 10cm step in the restaurant. The food was okay, none of us liked the salad dressing (vinegar, milk?, couldn't really determine it). Cash and card payment is possible. The schnitzel tasted good but was very expensive for €20 because the P/L ratio wasn't right. The spaetzle were soft-boiled and the sauces tasted like “standard sauce”. So if you're looking for a rustic atmosphere, you're in good hands there, but you shouldn't expect too much when it comes to the food. A 25€ schnitzel with 1 drink probably won't entice us there anymore, which is a shame 👎

I reserved a table as described online. When we got there the table was forgiven. When we asked politely, we were rudely kept waiting. Not recommended! That was my first and last visit

Small and delightful restaurant, warm and welcoming. Had a good soup and well cooked schnitzel served with a side of mixed vegetables and chips. Lastly, an excellent strudel 😍 served with ice cream and fresh cream. As an Italian approved 👍.

We finally managed to get a table on the third attempt. A great, small restaurant with a small, regional and seasonal menu. Every beer was freshly tapped. The starter soups alone were worth the visit. The main courses were the crowning glory. The service staff was quick and nice. Gladly again and again.

Although there were a lot of free tables in the outdoor dining area, we were immediately shooed back up after taking our seats. The reason was that the staff noticed that we only wanted to order drinks. We were literally thrown out with very unkind words. Every star is one star too many.

Since we just wanted something to drink, we had to give up our seats because, according to the landlord, it was a restaurant. There's nothing more to say, got up and went to the restaurant above.

Nowhere else in Marburg can you eat so well and comfortably. Super nice staff and authentic German cuisine. I can only recommend it.

We spent 5 days in beautiful Marburg and had dinner at the Ratsschänke twice. The food was super tasty and a lot of it was homemade. The innkeepers are warm and the two girls at the service are also very nice. You simply have to recommend the restaurant. If there were 10 stars to be awarded, we would give them to the Ratsschänke. Keep it up!!!

Everything was okay, but I found the portions to be quite small for the price. The salads could have been a little richer.

Even though there were empty tables and there were six of us, we weren't allowed to sit outside because we just wanted something to drink. Even when we asked, the innkeeper didn't come to explain this to us. We felt sorry for the service. Instead, we sat down in a café upstairs, drank a bit, even ate something, enjoyed the friendly service and laughed at the empty tables in the Ratsschänke.

I would have given 10 stars too. Perfect!

I would like to address constructive criticism. Yesterday we had dinner on the terrace. The ladies in service were super nice and everything was perfect. But about the meal, which took 1 hour: I don't understand why you pour the mushroom cream sauce directly onto the schnitzel, I would have a small one Wish gravy boat. Because by the time you had eaten the whole schnitzel, the breading was completely soggy. (also the mushrooms looked like they came from a can, that's not an assumption, it just looked that way, I could be wrong) But if that is the case, please change it. About the salad (we both really didn't like it, maybe that was bad luck or just a matter of taste) But: why is it served on a cheap white plate? A small bowl would be so much nicer to look at and also just easier to eat. The whole thing was reminiscent of hospital food. A pity. My partner liked the main course (roulade) quite well, but for me the sauce with the mushrooms was also very salty. The fact that you can't put a tip on the card is stupid and also outdated, because I would have liked to give the waitress the 10% she deserved, but unfortunately I had almost no cash left. In order to be more employee-friendly, it is time to change that.

I've been there twice for lunch so far (since I unfortunately live a little further away), but I wasn't disappointed both times. The food (home cooking in a cozy atmosphere) was very good (the same goes for the wine) and the service was professional and very warm at the same time. In retrospect, we weren't surprised that the restaurant was recommended to us by locals. A visit is 100% worth it!!
