Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to eat here due to previous set plans but had a couple of margs (more than once) and they were great! Great location near the main square of Rothenburg ob der Tauber with indoor and outdoor seating. The main man who works there is so lovely. Friendly and attentive without being too much. He remembered our exact order a few hours later. Also gave us small packs of dog treats for our dogs. Great wee place.

Lovely sitting on the terrace, friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. But above all: delicious food! Not too spicy and the herbs are not overpowering. Nice and fresh, plenty of vegetables, saturated and yet easily digestible. To conclude, we ate a typical Mexican dessert with guava. Recommended!

I'm perplexed by the many positive reviews. My husband and I went out for Mexican food for the first time in our lives because of these. Ok, admittedly we can't make any comparisons... Nevertheless: The food was more or less quickly cooled fast food in not very large quantities on porcelain at an exorbitant price... The service was very attentive and friendly, the beer was good. One star for each.

Gutes Restaurant in mitten der Stadt. Es ist mal was anderes als die ganzen Italienischen und bayrischen Restaurants (Biergarten). Das Personal war nett und das Essen sehr lecker. Auch die verschiedenen Nacho Farben sind eine sehr tolle Idee. Das einzige Problem waren die Wespen. Ich würde es trotzdem jedem empfehlen.

Best Mexican Food! Not Texmex, but authentic, real Mexican food. Tastes like Mexico! 😍 Nopal (cactus) was excellent. The tequila and mezcal menu is very extensive and offers top spirits. Friendly staff enrich your stay!

I ate a burrito. For me the vegetables were missing and it was almost only filled with meat. In my opinion the price-performance ratio is not right. I paid €18 for a burrito. Unfortunately the food disappointed me.

Very disappointed with the food. My family Ordered a lot of various menu items. Al Pastor tacos: Very bland flavor, 3 street tacos for $20€. Overpriced for the amount of food. They also charge $4€ for a small soup bowl size of chips!! Not complimentary. “Pico” is dry, no juice … 90% chopped onions, 9% tomatoes & 1% cilantro. Regular margaritas taste like drinking strait lemon juice. I’ll be fair and say that the cheese Quesadilla and tortilla soup was actually good. Quesa Birria was dry but had a bit of flavor. Beef tacos were as dry as the Sahara Desert. When asking to add cheese on top of my 3 tacos, female Hispanic server said “that will take too long for the kitchen to do because we are very busy right now” … I was shocked with that response, but said “ok, no problem, I’m ok with waiting a bit longer for it” … Tacos came out with out cheese and were very dry. Only could force myself to eat 2 of the 3. Clearly understaffed, judging by previous reviews it seems the quality and flavors are slipping a bit. The check was over $300 and most oir family left hungry because the food was not enjoyable enough to finish. We won’t be back which is a bummer because there’s a lot of potential for this restaurant being one of the only ‘non-German’ food options.

Despite the general rating of the restaurant, we were not impressed. The cola was flat and the Mexican food tasted of nothing. A flat feeling and disappointment as the city or offers a lot of good gastronomy.

Had a really solid dinner here, which was really surprising as you don’t expect to find proper Mexican food in the middle of Germany! It’s also a good sign too when the staff are mostly from Mexico themselves as you’re more likely to receive genuine family style cooking they’re proud of. Which is exactly what we got. I only wish I had taken more photos of the food, we had delicious starters of quesadillas & the tortilla soup, which was fresh and vibrant (definitely the highlight on the food side). For mains, my partner had a chicken burrito which was not mean on the portion size, was cooked well but needed a bit more seasoning. I had the birria tacos, which were crisp and cheesy but the consommé for dipping was a bit of a let down. What actually made the night, was we were served by one of the chefs as they were currently short staffed, but he was still really nice and very chatty, despite not doing his usual job.

Who would have thought? A top Mexican in the middle of the most beautiful city in the republic. Very loving atmosphere and the old restaurant has been able to bring out the best in the theme of “Mexico”. The food is very authentic and extremely tasty. We had the corn tacos with beef and pork. Both dishes were very harmonious. If you like it a little spicier, you can try the homemade hot salsa. It was a great fit. But if you're really hungry, you should definitely plan a starter or dessert, as the 3 tacos are served without any side dish such as salad or rice. What is particularly noteworthy, however, is the excellent tequila and mezcal selection. There is even an extra card for this and the advice from the service staff is really top-notch. The Classic Margarita can also compete with any top bar. All in all a successful experience. 👍

AMAZING!!! We stumbled upon this place and the food was unbelievable, so was the customer service. Husband had Gorditas de Polla, kids had quesadilla, burrito, the guacamole was so good. Authentic Mexican chefs.

We were there for dinner and were lucky to get two seats. The service was really very nice and we felt very comfortable. The food was really tasty and the waiter was also happy to help with the choice of food. The prices are fair and the selection offers something for every taste. We would go again if we weren't just in town visiting. The star deduction is only for the furnishings.

The only thing missing was the Mexican music. We felt completely at home with the super friendly service and the great food. Recommendation. The terrific hot sauce 😊😊😊😄👍

After eating German and Austrian food for many of our meals during our week in Bavaria, it was actually nice to have a change of pace for food. The food was good - although expensive and not quite as good as what we're used to in the U.S.; e.g., the guacamole was expensive and not very good; no chips and salsa. The service was excellent, and the restaurant is conveniently located.

I’d read several of the extremely positive reviews for the restaurant so my expectations were very high of what to expect. It was a nice enough location and pleasant staff. The food was ok, portions were rather small and what I would consider on the expensive side, but that seems to be the general level in Rothenburg. I ordered the veg. fajitas that were ok, accompanied by a small pot of salsa and a small pot guacamole and two tortillas. I’ve given it an average score, nothing exceptional, but nice enough. Hard to understand how this place has received so many very high scores. I guess we were the exception.

Super delicious food in a direct location and a view of the beautiful and busy streets. Fresh and exceptional food. Also dog-friendly: water was provided to us and we were also given dog treats. There is also at least 1 vegan alternative. Gladly again on your next visit.

A Mexican, originally Franconian, restaurant. A strange but true statement. If you are skeptical ( why shall I go to a Mexican restaurant in Rothenburg? ), give anyway the Place a chance! The food we had was really delicious, very tasty and spicy too, as per Mexican tradition. Staff was super friendly, happy to help with Smile on their face every time. A Jem!

Delicious! I always had the cliché in my head that Mexican food had to be spicy and that as a vegetarian I didn't have a good selection. But I was taught a much better lesson here. Thanks for that.

Between Schäufele, bratwurst and snowballs, this restaurant seems like something exotic, but it is so much more. In addition to extremely tasty and authentic Mexican dishes (we had the house specialty) and really good drinks (be sure to try the Magaritas), it is above all the charm of its operators that made our evening a wonderful experience with their friendliness and really courteous service allowed to become. And if you hear the word “tequila” and only remember your earlier youthful sins involving salt and lemon wedges, you will be taught better here. There is a large selection of high-quality Mexican tequilas with really good advice from an expert. In any case, we would love to come back!

This is a hidden gem in Rothenburg. The food is delicious, with a German/Mexican inspired range (especially the Frank-Mex pork options) with fresh local ingredients. The service is 10 out of 10, quick, friendly and welcoming. Would 100% reccomend.

We went to Don Gallo for a nightcap and were extremely surprised and very happy with the service. In addition to delicious margaritas, we got an interesting history lesson about tequila. Jesen introduced us to the different types and varieties of tequila. On his recommendation, we drank a really good tequila for the first time. Would come back at any time. At the end there was a souvenir photo with the original sombrero. Jesen really gave us a very good ending to the evening. Thank you very much again!

We noticed the sign "authentic Mexican cuisine" and were very happy to see that this Mexican restaurant stands out from other restaurants that only offer "Tex-Mex". Here at Don Gallo we not only felt very comfortable and entertained, but the food was also really excellent! The Sopa de Tortilla in particular was a particularly good idea as a starter - super tasty, very good, fresh meat and homemade, colorful (different types of corn!) tortillas in it. I can really highly recommend this restaurant - it was one of our highlights while traveling through and in Rothenburg👍😊

The seating is lovely, the food tastes great and the service is exceptionally good - innkeepers who see their job as a calling make you feel welcome as a guest! There's also an exquisite selection of tequila, so you can learn something if you've only ever experienced tequila in combination with lemon and salt!

We've eaten here for the third time now and I have to say really tasty, authentic food (the beef tacos are the burner)... I've been to México twice already. Neither the food nor the ambience nor the hospitality comes close to that. Absolutely recommended! !! Jesen will advise you on all matters and Dominik impresses with his homemade sauces. Exactly as it should be.

Great authentic restaurant! The majority of the staff and the chefs are from Mexico, who pamper their guests with a lot of heart and passion. I have been missing Mexican food ever since I came to Germany to live here. I been to a few around and could not find a decent one. When Don Gallo was open here in Rothenburg, I was skeptical of the food because of my experience in many here in Germany, but to my surprise this restaurant is excellent. The texture and flavor of the food is delicious and the best one around this parts as far as I can find. The reception and service is friendly and attentive with minor hick ups which could improve a little but not bad at all. The ambient is great with traditional Mexican music and some salsa and other Hispanic ballads. The floors, tables are clean and decorated with some traditional Mexican ornaments and pictures. I definitely recommend this restaurant and will continue to come back to this one.

Don Gallo Restaurant, Rothenburg A well-designed and tasty Mexican restaurant in the center of Rottenberg, near the great cathedral We especially enjoyed a classic burrito with asado and vegetables. We also ordered a fahita (only 2 fahitas arrived, you can order more) with meat and yellow and red peppers. Lemonade with hibiscus was great, reminiscent of pomegranates in taste. A happy and colorful atmosphere for a delicious meal. Expensive prices.

Who'd have thought you could find mezcal in Rothenberg? Considering the availability (or lack thereof ) of certain ingredients, the food was great. Fine selection of mezcal. Typical but decently done cocktails, like margaritas. The only thing missing was the Mexican beer.

We went to this restaurant because of the reviews but tbh, we didn’t like the food at all. It was sub-par Mexican food we had so far. For the first time, we didn’t any kind of dip with nachos. We ordered tacos but they were not great. Burritos were the only dish which had an average taste. Service was also not good because we didn’t get cutlery till we are half done eating. I am not sure whether it was because of the rush or anything else but we were expecting cutlery and tissues since beginning.

Unfortunately not my taste. Sorry.

Went to Don Gallo for the first time today, the food was authentic and tasted top notch. Cocktails also tasted very good. Service was 1a, very attentive and friendly. In the ambience, the Mexican flair was very well integrated into the old German Rothenburg architecture. A particularly gimmick were the various tequilas or mezcals that were offered, which were then presented by the host with the bottle at the table and explained, similar to a whiskey tasting. Can only recommend Don Gallo and will come again. Keep it up! Greetings from table 2

This place came highly recommended to us and we were so excited to see nopales on the menu, an item that's rather difficult to find in germany. I'm not sure if this was a "wrong place at the wrong time" type of situation, but we didn't enjoy the food. We ate lunch there on a sunday. BUT keep in mind that regional differences might play a role in this, since my husband's family is from Jalisco. Overall WE PERSONALLY were missing flavors and textures. I'm also not sure if the fact that they source most of the ingredients regionally justifies these rather high prices. -Quessadillas 4* - solid! -Quesabirria 1* - consomé didn't have a lot of depth to it and since the container, it came in, was so small it was rather inconvenient to dip anything in it. The meat was extremely soft, almost mushy in texture. -Fajitas Arrachera 1* - Steak was tough, the whole thing was lacking flavor. -Frijoles 2.5* - taste was ok. We expected simply that though - frijoles - not frijoles refritos. A specification in that case, also the type of beans you're using, would be nice. (Not pinto beans in case anyone is wondering) -Guacamole 2* - taste was ok. We're just not a big fan of the blended texture (same as the beans btw). -Pico de gallo 1* flavor was missing and didn't seem freshly made that day unfortunately (reminder: we had lunch there) Hot sauce/ salsa 4* - Had a nice kick to it. My husband still spoke about it on the way home. -Fries and nuggets (since there's no rice on the menu as a side dish) 3* - that was good. Glad that's an option on the menu, since my kids usually go for rice and beans. I was missing the happy, colorful atmosphere, mariachi music, something. Service was good. Food was just not for us personally. Wishing you all the best. Definitely appreciate and congratulate you on bringing actual mexican dishes to germany, instead of TexMex foods.

An Authentic Mexican Family Business. The food was great, the price was reasonable and the restaurant was lovingly decorated. Very child friendly. We would be happy to come back and recommend it to anyone who likes or wants to try Mexican cuisine. Not comparable to the Tex-Mex restaurants.

As an American, I can say that this is some of the best Mexican food I've had anywhere, better than most places in Texas and California. The classic Margarita is perfect. Highly recommend the tortilla soup and quesabirria. Try the house made hot sauces too!

One of the few restaurants in Rothenburg that is open between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the low season. Ambience okay, service very quick, attentive and friendly. The food was good but - even for Rothenburg - significantly too expensive considering the portions. 20 euros for a starter portion as a main course is not possible.

Unfortunately, the food is not good and trust me, I am Mexican. The names and the way they present the dishes look very good. However, the Mexican taste is not there. I ordered a Quesabirria and it was not birria, at all. It was just some meat, shredded in a similar way, put in a big tortilla with cheese. The tacos al pastor were also very disappointing. The prices are super high for what you get. Yes, the place is nicely decorated and maybe good for a drink.

Fajitas de Pollo was absolutely amazing. Rarely have I eaten such beautifully processed chicken. We just came from the cathedral rep., pollo is part of life there and they can prepare it very well, but this was so incredibly tasty and tops everything.🤤 Super nice service, great restaurant. 👍

Great first dinner during our week in Rothenburg. The owner was super friendly, there's a great tequila and mezcal selection which we enjoyed sampling immensely. The quesabirria was delicious, as was the ceviche. Highly recommend if you're looking for something other than German or Italian food.
