Traveling vegan Texans here… came to Don Gallo for the options and were pleasantly surprised. Our server was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food was great, and we were skeptical since we live in the land of good Mexican food. We ordered chips & guacamole, and veggie burritos modified to be without cheese and crema.

I spent my birthday there last night; the food was delicious, and the service staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make my birthday special. It couldn't have been better. Thank you so much!

We are Mexican food sobs. Don Gallo is some of the best we've ever had.... anywhere. Owner is super friendly. German/ Sinaloa Mex heritage. Might be the best meal we've had on our trip. Service was excellent. Great location. We'd go back for sure.

It was our first time at a Mexican restaurant. We had no idea what to expect. We were very surprised; it was really delicious. Whether appetizer or main course, everything tasted great. The staff at Don Gallo is friendly, and the drinks and food arrive very quickly. The vegetables taste very different with fish, scampi, or meat. Fantastic.

We were there on a weekday afternoon, and there were few customers in the restaurant. The service was pleasant and polite. The food was tasty, but the tomatoes in all the dishes were bad – either old or spoiled. The restaurant smelled strongly of food, and the smell lingered on our clothes after we left. But otherwise, it wasn't bad. The interior had an atmospheric Mexican style.

The food quality is simply outstanding. As a Latin American who has lived in Germany for a decade and tried countless Mexican restaurants across the country, I was genuinely impressed by how authentic the dishes at Don Gallo taste. The prices are reasonable, and the service is warm and welcoming. Its location couldn’t be better—right in the heart of Rothenburg. Absolutely 100% recommended!

Yes! Believe the reviews. This is authentic Mexican with amazing Margaritas in this tiny medieval town. If you get a chance to speak with one of the owners, Adriana, you can understand her families amazing story and how this restaurant ended up in Germany. We are from Southern California and we think we are Mexican food, and Margarita snobs (especially margaritas) The chicken fajitas were tasty and had a great home made spicy sauce. The margaritas were perfection and rivaled some at my favorite Mexican places in California. A must go!

We had a table for three. The appetizers—especially the octopus and the mixed salad—were very tasty, fresh, and plentiful. At around €12 per portion, the quality was perfectly acceptable. The service was generally friendly, but at times quite slow. We occasionally got the impression that the staff was a bit overwhelmed. There was a larger group (around 15–20 people) and two smaller tables in the restaurant. Although the dining room was only about half full, the team seemed stressed and less attentive. After a while, no one came to our table to ask if everything was alright or if we wanted another drink. A second drink was only brought upon request—a shame, as it detracted somewhat from the overall hospitality. ... The total price was around €115 for three people (one of whom was a 12-year-old). The food was perfectly fine – 3 out of 5 stars. While the price might be justified, the value for money wasn't quite there, mainly due to the rather inattentive service. Overall, everything was okay, but with a little more friendliness and attention, the experience could have been significantly improved. Thank you!

We went here together with my beloved. We give it a 8.5/10 thumbs up. It was very tasty, choose beef tacos if you are hungry. Definitely go, it costs 30-40 € for 2 people somewhere. Good luck!

Really good food, very traditional Mexican, I would definitely never be able to make it like that at home. It's definitely worth going to a restaurant for that. Would have left 5 stars had they not allowed rude smokers to ruin a fine meal on the patio. Two women lit up right next to our table. What is it about smokers that makes them believe their addiction doesn't infringe on the liberty of others? Pure delusion. Follow up: "Isn't fair?" It may be legal to contaminate the air with cigarettes on restaurant patios in Germany but as the business owner it's still ultimately your responsibility to provide an enjoyable and healthy experience for your guests. I suggest that you seat smokers only on the perimeter and install fans to blow their disgusting smoke somewhere else. Next time we're in Rothenburg and want Mexican cuisine, we'll certainly try Don Gallo again but we'll sit inside. Thanks for your reply.

Familial vibes, colorful decor and delicious mexican food

Incredibly delicious with the friendliest service. The quesabarilla and agua (lemon) are unbeatable for me.

They said they were open until 10pm, so I went at 8:30pm, but there weren't any customers. The server told me to hurry up and order because they were closing soon, and her tone was irritating and incredibly rude. They didn't even have tap water and didn't even set the cutlery, so I asked for it and they gave it to me. While I was eating, they turned off all the music and started creating a closing atmosphere. It completely ruined my appetite. The food was even more shocking. The quesadillas were okay, but the tacos, nachos, and burritos were all dry and bland. The meat was dry, the salsa was bland, and the guacamole wasn't seasoned well. What the heck. They even cleaned up my half-eaten plate. It was really unpleasant. If you're going to do this, don't say they're open until 10pm, just close at 9pm. Only go if you're willing to accept this kind of treatment and eat dry tacos.

We went to Don Gallo today based on a recommendation. Unfortunately, I can only give one star, and that's for the friendly staff when ordering. When we returned all our food, it wasn't so nice. We had burritos and tacos. For almost €18 each, it was way too little. It didn't taste good at all. Overcooked frozen vegetables, presented with a careless and tasteless presentation. It was truly unpalatable. We neither moaned nor complained. Still, not a word of apology, let alone an espresso or tequila as an apology. Of course, we paid the full price. That's not what hospitality should be, in my opinion. What a shame....

In Rothenberg o.a.t. On a Sunday night we went to the restaurant with the best rating - and not knowing it was a Mexican restaurant made it even more quirky in this medieval German town. We were greeted very warmly and made to feel at home by the young lady serving us with her manners and small talk. The menu is simple enough and we chose a sea food burrito dish and a beef fajita dish with fried peppers and onions. This was nicely washed down with a Mexican red wine from Santa Cecilia winery and we rounded the evening off with a couple of Tequila shots - again the young man serving us went through the different types of tequilas and helping us choose by making us smell the corks- very informative. We enjoyed our visit here.

We had two different tacos. They tasted good, though not outstanding, and the service was friendly and quick. However, in our opinion, the value for money wasn't there; the portions were too small for the price (approximately €18 for three tacos). Of course, the location is expensive, but unfortunately, you won't get full from it. We wouldn't eat here again in the future, despite the friendly staff and generally good food.

We were craving Mexican cuisine and stumbled upon the Don Gallo restaurant while searching. We received a friendly welcome and good service, and we all enjoyed the food. In conclusion, if we're ever in Rothenburg again, we'll be happy to stop by again.

THANK YOU for allowing us to be your guests on December 31, 2023. Margheritas (with straws), tequila, and the food: DELICIOUS! We will be back the next time we are in Rothenburg. Yummy...oh no: hello!! We were at Don Gallo (in the Roter Hahn) on June 29, 2022. It was amazing! At first, we were just there for a drink. We all opted for a margarita...cherry margarita and strawberry margarita...what can I say: yummy. The host, Adriana, is super-friendly...as is the entire team! We spontaneously decided to have dinner there as well. What can I say? A top-notch decision. Adriana's husband, Dominik, and the cooking team also know their craft! Tip: Try the homemade dips/sauces (even the probably too spicy ones)! AMAZING!!...you can buy them there, too. ...we also had some margaritas with our dinner (new: cucumber margarita 🥴🤣)...another super-cheerful team...and later, a big thank you from us to everyone. We will be dining at Don Gallo again as soon as we make it back to Rothenburg! We wish you much success!

The food was good but expensive for what you get. 18 for 3 street tacos no sides, 23 for fajitas no sides and it didn't have much meat maybe 1/4 was meat. The specialty lemonade was delicious. They take card but prefer cash to buy the hot sauces which are 8 for a very small jar

I love Mexican cuisine and am a huge fan. Unfortunately, this restaurant didn't win me over. The tortillas were edible, but tasted nothing special—and I prefer them crispier and not so dry. I didn't like the guacamole at all. The service was okay, but overall, it lacked the "wow" factor. I wouldn't go back for a second visit.

What a wonderful "sorpresa" this Mexican restaurant. With delicious food: home-made Nachos with cheese (never had such a good nachos), tortitas de pollo that melt in the mouth, camarones al ajillo (never thought having shrimps in a tortita would be soooo good) and the hit was Quesabirrias, a local Sinaloa owner's mum's speciality. Service was perfect: fast, effective and thoughtful. Thanks for such a lovely evening.

The ambiance and service were very nice, but the food was unfortunately not at all impressive. The main course was relatively tasteless; we had a burrito, but the dessert of churros was much better. I would give it 2.5 stars if possible. Not worth a visit 😕

We ordered tacos dorados de birria, guacamole, tortillas chips, tacos al pastor and aguas frescas (lemonade and Jamaica). The flavor is really really good! The tortillas are the BEST I’ve had in Germany! The tacos were delicious, honestly it’s a great restaurant, very clean, very tasty food and amazing service! Also the salsa habanero is very good! It’s a must! Next time I’m in Rothemburg I will definitely stop to grab a meal!

If you read "Red Rooster" you are in the right place. Mexican, definitely recommended. Price performance is right, very nice service, and if you like tequila, this is a must visit anyway. A separate map with a huge selection and great description. Tables inside and outside.

Really good authentic Mexican cuisine with things on the menu that you don't get anywhere else in the area. Not Tex-Mex but authentic cuisine, and you can taste it. The Quesadillia Birria in particular are simply amazing and always worth a visit. The owner is a super nice woman who has an extremely friendly team behind her. The ambience is rustic, as we know it from Rothenburg, but still beautifully furnished, including Mexican decoration. In summer it's also really good to sit outside.

Highly recommended especially for vegetarians 👍 When I was researching a suitable restaurant, I came across Don Gallo because I like Mexican food and I don't know anything about Franconian cuisine. The card is short, which is a quality feature. As a starter there was a quesadilla, which tasted very good with the guacamole. On recommendation, the main course was the burrito, which also tasted good. However, I missed the spice/spiciness for both dishes, which is why I would have liked to try the homemade hot sauce. Unfortunately, I didn't actively ask about it. The price is very reasonable, but it's fine for a day trip to Rothenburg. The service was extremely good, which made me very happy. Clattering storks on the house opposite and the great weather rounded off the stay very well.

Perhaps our new high mark for Mexican food after a year in Germany. The tortillas for the tacos were legit, and the homemade hot sauces blended from peppers grown by their chef were flavorful and fantastic. As seen in the photo, their attention to detail and decor added to the experience. Perhaps most surprising was the mezcal selection; many from Oaxaca but with German or Swiss business partners. Forego the wurstsalat and check out this place!

If you want delicious food in a pleasant atmosphere, this is the place for you. The food tastes fantastic and is not heavy on the stomach at all. Everything tastes very healthy and is prepared by hand (not frozen food like in other restaurants). The staff is very friendly and always tries to accommodate all requests. We will definitely come back often 🙌

On our way to the south of Bavaria we stopped there last weekend. Since we don't have a Mexican restaurant here, we were very excited about the food. All in all, the food was really good, the service was super friendly and the atmosphere was harmonious. A little too expensive for our taste for what is on offer, but Rothenburg is of course also a tourism stronghold. In that respect it was okay and we left the restaurant satisfied.

It was a pleasant surprise to find this Mexican restaurant in the heart of Schnitzel country. The service was terrific and the tortilla soup was delightful.

Above average for the German taste, but below average for normal taste. Too bland food, sauces below average, pastor was dry, where was the achiote? For these prices, cannot recommend it. Tourist trap. Also, drug addicts were smoking outside. Very disappointing after all the 5* stars.

Amazing, authentic Mexican (NOT TEX MEX) is a surprising beautiful location! As an expat Southern Californian who loves Mexican Cooking, finding great Mexican food in the UK and Europe is really difficult. Thankfully there's Don Gallo Comida Mexicana and it's a whole lot closer to the UK than Mexico. Located in the beautiful town of Rotenburg O.D.T off the revered Romantic Road in Germany, this delightful restaurant delivers fabulous, authentic Mexican cuisine served by the nicest of hosts one can meet. A great find! A delicious dinner with a wonderful selection of Tequila and Mezcal as well. Highly recommend taking a trip to Germany just to eat here!

This has become one of our favorite restaurants in Germany. The food is excellent and authentic, the service is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the interior is cozy and fun. We’re so glad we have an excellent, actual Mexican restaurant close to home and we will be coming back often.

I ate here with my children on New Year's Day and can only recommend Don Gallo. Super nice, child-loving and attentive service staff, online table reservations are easy, good food and there was even something on the children's menu for our little picky aunt.

The two of us were at Don Gallo on December 7th, 2024. We enjoyed it very much. The portions could have been a little bigger. But we had a starter with it, so it went well. Absolutely delicious in taste. The service was very courteous and really on point. I have one small point: it's a shame that the vegetarian dishes are more expensive than meat dishes. We really enjoyed it and we will definitely eat there again on our next visit to Rothenburg o.d.Tauber.

Authentic Mexican in the heart of Rothernberg. The staff are all lovely, very friendly and food is good. The only thing I will say is the prices are above most of other restaurants. I paid €27.50 for 6 king prawns and a side salad.

Dinner on a Tuesday, 2 people with reservation. First of all, a big compliment on how beautiful the decor is! The building is very old and classically German, but has been "styled" in a Mexican way with great attention to detail, which I think is very successful. The selection of dishes is clearly laid out and even as a vegetarian you can find delicious dishes here - in my case cactus leaves. My companion was also very impressed with his flank steak. Also recommended is the homemade hot sauce, which we were served in a small bottle. After the meal there was a tequila, with excellent advice, as the menu is a bit more extensive. If you want, you can even learn a little Spanish here, as there are small cards with translations at every table =) We highly recommend this restaurant if you want to try something different that you can't find everywhere and appreciate friendly, attentive and courteous service. We will definitely come back! =)

Going to Don Gallo was more than eating dinner, it was an experience. The decor is inviting and perfect. The service was amazing. And the food... oh my goodness. We had the tortilla soup which was fresh (how is soup fresh... go there and see) and tacos. So delicious, some of the best Mexican food we have had. Also, very dog friendly. We watched as the staff brought water bowls for each doggie and they got their own snackie treat!!! While traveling we miss our dog at home so it is so nice to get to see some while traveling.

Don Gallo is a model restaurant for us. The service was friendly and courteous with charm, the ambience was beautiful and decorated with loving Mexican decorations and the food was incredibly tasty. We were so impressed that we ate there three times in a row. Our top recommendation: Quesadilla
