Amazing, authentic Mexican (NOT TEX MEX) is a surprising beautiful location! As an expat Southern Californian who loves Mexican Cooking, finding great Mexican food in the UK and Europe is really difficult. Thankfully there's Don Gallo Comida Mexicana and it's a whole lot closer to the UK than Mexico. Located in the beautiful town of Rotenburg O.D.T off the revered Romantic Road in Germany, this delightful restaurant delivers fabulous, authentic Mexican cuisine served by the nicest of hosts one can meet. A great find! A delicious dinner with a wonderful selection of Tequila and Mezcal as well. Highly recommend taking a trip to Germany just to eat here!

Authentic Mexican in the heart of Rothernberg. The staff are all lovely, very friendly and food is good. The only thing I will say is the prices are above most of other restaurants. I paid €27.50 for 6 king prawns and a side salad.

Dinner on a Tuesday, 2 people with reservation. First of all, a big compliment on how beautiful the decor is! The building is very old and classically German, but has been "styled" in a Mexican way with great attention to detail, which I think is very successful. The selection of dishes is clearly laid out and even as a vegetarian you can find delicious dishes here - in my case cactus leaves. My companion was also very impressed with his flank steak. Also recommended is the homemade hot sauce, which we were served in a small bottle. After the meal there was a tequila, with excellent advice, as the menu is a bit more extensive. If you want, you can even learn a little Spanish here, as there are small cards with translations at every table =) We highly recommend this restaurant if you want to try something different that you can't find everywhere and appreciate friendly, attentive and courteous service. We will definitely come back! =)

Going to Don Gallo was more than eating dinner, it was an experience. The decor is inviting and perfect. The service was amazing. And the food... oh my goodness. We had the tortilla soup which was fresh (how is soup fresh... go there and see) and tacos. So delicious, some of the best Mexican food we have had. Also, very dog friendly. We watched as the staff brought water bowls for each doggie and they got their own snackie treat!!! While traveling we miss our dog at home so it is so nice to get to see some while traveling.

Don Gallo is a model restaurant for us. The service was friendly and courteous with charm, the ambience was beautiful and decorated with loving Mexican decorations and the food was incredibly tasty. We were so impressed that we ate there three times in a row. Our top recommendation: Quesadilla

We have been to Rothenburg several times, but never to Don Callo. Stopped here today by chance. The food was excellent. Main course as well as dessert. Service very nice and accommodating. Our two dogs were also very welcome. We were immediately given water and treats. We'll be back Greetings from the Palatinate

Being from Texas, I am very leary of Mexican restaurants in Europe. Restaurant Do Gallo does not disappoint. The first taste of the tortilla soup reminded me how much I missed real Mexican food. Everything we had was authentic, CORRECT, and delicious. And the servi ce was excellent and friendly. We are here for a short time, or I would be a regular here. It is the best Mexican restaurant I have found in the 20 countries I have visited in Europe. (5 Mexican cooks).

We went to Don Gallo for dessert today. We were warmly welcomed by the gentleman and brought to the table. I ordered churros with chocolate sauce and the churros snail with ice cream. The churros were absolutely freshly made and not a ready-made product. They tasted very tasty. I can only recommend it.

Perfect Mexican restaurant. The ambiance and the decor really takes you to Mexico while having a beautiful view of the streets of Ruthenberg. And the food was really tasty. I enjoyed it a lot.

A Mexican in Rothenburg? Why not! We were pleasantly surprised, the food was super tasty and a great change between Schäufele and duck breast. Only the equipment is a bit overloaded, sometimes less is more, but that's just a matter of taste.

This is by far the best Mexican food restaurant in Germany. I got a minimum of once a month for my salsas and quessabirria .

Don Gallo was a wonderful find on our day trip to Rothenburg. We stopped in for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised to find such great Mexican food in Germany. The food was delicious, margaritas had the perfect amount of tequila, and the service was fantastic.

By far the best Mexican food we have eaten in Germany so far. Really tasty and absolutely authentic thanks to the Mexican chefs. 6 out of 5 stars!

Came with my brother as part of our holiday, the food was really nice, if you like spicy things, ask for the "hotter sauce" Josè our server was really friendly and genuine, and really helpful.

I thought I reviewed but I can’t find it now. This restaurant has super yummy food and a great atmosphere! They have homemade hot sauce which is just delicious. We bought bottles to take home to America with us and are still enjoying them. We will have to come back when we run out. :) You must eat here if you love Mexican food!

It was my favorite place for authentic Mexican food until we ate some Baja shrimp tacos that hurt me, my wife and my friend.

Traveling vegan Texans here… came to Don Gallo for the options and were pleasantly surprised. Our server was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food was great, and we were skeptical since we live in the land of good Mexican food. We ordered chips & guacamole, and veggie burritos modified to be without cheese and crema.

Coming from Colorado, was not expecting this great of good. Service was phenomenal!! After 2 weeks on cured meats, so nice to have a change of pace.

Attractively decorated Mexican restaurant. Friendly and smooth service. The food itself was not very special and we therefore thought it was a bit on the pricey side. Price-quality ratio not quite right as far as we are concerned, although we still liked it.

We went there because of the good reviews, but the restaurant couldn't live up to the positive expectations. I had nachos with guacamole as a starter. The nachos were completely tasteless, the guacamole completely lacked salt and pepper. My wife's main course was so bland that I can't even remember what she had. My flank steak was well done and never saw any salt or pepper from anywhere. As a side dish there were grilled and unseasoned corn on the cob and a shot glass full of tomatoes and onions as well as potato wedges. Wasn't good

Would have left 5 stars had they not allowed rude smokers to ruin a fine meal on the patio. Two women lit up right next to our table. What is it about smokers that makes them believe their addiction doesn't infringe on the liberty of others? Pure delusion.

We came across this pearl in beautiful Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The two of us had dinner there. The restaurant is very cozy, we immediately felt at home. The service was very courteous, funny, authentic and gave us the best advice. The restaurant was busy, but the service still took time for everyone. Still there were no waiting times. The food was outstanding and plentiful. Finally, we got advice about spirits. We also received an outstandingly good tequila, which was in no way reminiscent of familiar booze, and a delicious café liquor. The evening was a complete pleasure in every respect. Please keep it up, you're doing great!

Good food, have missed Mexican food since I moved out here and this is pretty close. The owners are super friendly and they have great cocktails.

Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to eat here due to previous set plans but had a couple of margs (more than once) and they were great! Great location near the main square of Rothenburg ob der Tauber with indoor and outdoor seating. The main man who works there is so lovely. Friendly and attentive without being too much. He remembered our exact order a few hours later. Also gave us small packs of dog treats for our dogs. Great wee place.

Amazing Mexican food, very authentic! We had the tortillas soup and Quesobirria! I live in Arizona USA, about 45 minutes drive from the border of Mexico, so I feel I know what Mexican food should taste like and this place was truly like going to a place back home. Add to the that the service was outstanding. Dominic was wonderful and even shared some of his secret recipe for the hot sauce he personally makes, which of course, we had to bring some back home to the US!

Our daughter has lived in Germany for 16 years and has tried every Mexican restaurant she could find in her travels and was always disappointed, until now! Don Gallo is by far the best Mexican food to be found in Germany to date! Everyone in our party o 6 enjoyed their meal, the tortillas chips were freshly made like they should be, great homemade salsas, perfect fresh margaritas, excellent tequila selection and lastly, excellent caring service from this family ran establishment. Oh, and the kitchen staff are actually originally from Mexico! AND what a perfect village to be in! Rothenburg ob der Taube is possibly the most beautiful village I've seen in Germany! 😍

Very authentic restaurant! The waiter was there with a lot of heart and passion. Food was very tasty, as well as, we were very skeptical, the tequila! Because of the good reviews, we ate at "Don Gallo" during our visit to Rothenburg and were not disappointed. From the great ambience to the delicious starters and main courses to the dessert, everything was perfect. Particularly noteworthy is the very attentive service. We had our dog with us and as a matter of course a water bowl was put out for him and we were given small bags of treats for him.

We chose this restaurant on a Friday evening because it had a lot of good reviews, as well as a few vegan options. But unfortunately we were very disappointed, at least in terms of the food, and the service was only partly good. We had the Fajitas de Nopal, the Quesabirria, the Arrachera and the Tacos de Suadero. Authentic Mexican cuisine is advertised, but we've read this a lot and apparently there are a variety of different interpretations of the term "authentic". If authentic in this context means that the food comes to the table completely unseasoned, then we go along with that statement. However, from previous visits to other Mexican cuisine restaurants, we were used to at least a variety of sauces being served with the meal. Here, based on the dish, it's just guacamole and possibly salsa. But even these two could have at least used some spice. The salsa only consisted of tomato pieces and onion pieces, unfortunately no comparison with an original pico de gallo. Unfortunately, the fried cactus strips were only tossed in oil, otherwise very tasteless. Unfortunately, with so little taste of its own, guacamole doesn't help. A suitable pico de gallo would have helped far more. Especially since the tortillas, along with the guacamole and the cactus strips, were unfortunately very dry. The quesabirria, while filling, was a far cry from crispy flour tortillas. Likewise, the brisket it contained had little to no flavor. Wherever the coriander was hiding, you couldn't taste it. Unfortunately, I can't say anything good about the Tacos de Suadero, just like I can about the Arrachera. Only the potatoes in the latter had some spice. Unfortunately, it also tasted like a standard spice that you can buy in the store. All in all, I unfortunately have to say that the food wasn't worth the price. We've had better Mexican food for less in Switzerland, which is more expensive. A note on the map that the VAT has been increased again and the prices have been adjusted accordingly does not help. The service was partial. On the one hand, empty plates were already being cleared away while some of those present were still eating. Unfortunately, this is a complete no-go, even if most of the table has already finished eating. Only the attention when the drinks were empty didn't make the service completely substandard.

The food is authentic to the specifics of the restaurant and very delicious at a decent price. The location is good and the staff very warm and friendly. I recommend you try it and you won't regret it.

Wonderful hospitality with genuine warmth. Special shout out to Jesus who was super friendly. We went to Don Gallo after trying our luck at two Italian restaurants closer to our hotel and at both places I thought they were rather rude. One was empty and still refused us. Racism? Perhaps. This review is 3 months late but I was reminded of it because I just found their card in my wallet. Pretty authentic Mexican food and as good as any you can find in the U.S. I’ve not been to Mexico, but this isn’t Tex Mex.

Great food and great service. We felt very welcome, after dinner our 12 year old was invited by the friendly staff to visit their own chilli farm - and as a farewell gift there were valuable tips on how to start growing your own chilli. We will come back when we are in the area!

Lovely sitting on the terrace, friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. But above all: delicious food! Not too spicy and the herbs are not overpowering. Nice and fresh, plenty of vegetables, saturated and yet easily digestible. To conclude, we ate a typical Mexican dessert with guava. Recommended!

I'm perplexed by the many positive reviews. My husband and I went out for Mexican food for the first time in our lives because of these. Ok, admittedly we can't make any comparisons... Nevertheless: The food was more or less quickly cooled fast food in not very large quantities on porcelain at an exorbitant price... The service was very attentive and friendly, the beer was good. One star for each.

Gutes Restaurant in mitten der Stadt. Es ist mal was anderes als die ganzen Italienischen und bayrischen Restaurants (Biergarten). Das Personal war nett und das Essen sehr lecker. Auch die verschiedenen Nacho Farben sind eine sehr tolle Idee. Das einzige Problem waren die Wespen. Ich würde es trotzdem jedem empfehlen.

I ate a burrito. For me the vegetables were missing and it was almost only filled with meat. In my opinion the price-performance ratio is not right. I paid €18 for a burrito. Unfortunately the food disappointed me.

Very disappointed with the food. My family Ordered a lot of various menu items. Al Pastor tacos: Very bland flavor, 3 street tacos for $20€. Overpriced for the amount of food. They also charge $4€ for a small soup bowl size of chips!! Not complimentary. “Pico” is dry, no juice … 90% chopped onions, 9% tomatoes & 1% cilantro. Regular margaritas taste like drinking strait lemon juice. I’ll be fair and say that the cheese Quesadilla and tortilla soup was actually good. Quesa Birria was dry but had a bit of flavor. Beef tacos were as dry as the Sahara Desert. When asking to add cheese on top of my 3 tacos, female Hispanic server said “that will take too long for the kitchen to do because we are very busy right now” … I was shocked with that response, but said “ok, no problem, I’m ok with waiting a bit longer for it” … Tacos came out with out cheese and were very dry. Only could force myself to eat 2 of the 3. Clearly understaffed, judging by previous reviews it seems the quality and flavors are slipping a bit. The check was over $300 and most oir family left hungry because the food was not enjoyable enough to finish. We won’t be back which is a bummer because there’s a lot of potential for this restaurant being one of the only ‘non-German’ food options.

Despite the general rating of the restaurant, we were not impressed. The cola was flat and the Mexican food tasted of nothing. A flat feeling and disappointment as the city or offers a lot of good gastronomy.

AMAZING!!! We stumbled upon this place and the food was unbelievable, so was the customer service. Husband had Gorditas de Polla, kids had quesadilla, burrito, the guacamole was so good. Authentic Mexican chefs.

Had a really solid dinner here, which was really surprising as you don’t expect to find proper Mexican food in the middle of Germany! It’s also a good sign too when the staff are mostly from Mexico themselves as you’re more likely to receive genuine family style cooking they’re proud of. Which is exactly what we got. I only wish I had taken more photos of the food, we had delicious starters of quesadillas & the tortilla soup, which was fresh and vibrant (definitely the highlight on the food side). For mains, my partner had a chicken burrito which was not mean on the portion size, was cooked well but needed a bit more seasoning. I had the birria tacos, which were crisp and cheesy but the consommé for dipping was a bit of a let down. What actually made the night, was we were served by one of the chefs as they were currently short staffed, but he was still really nice and very chatty, despite not doing his usual job.

Who would have thought? A top Mexican in the middle of the most beautiful city in the republic. Very loving atmosphere and the old restaurant has been able to bring out the best in the theme of “Mexico”. The food is very authentic and extremely tasty. We had the corn tacos with beef and pork. Both dishes were very harmonious. If you like it a little spicier, you can try the homemade hot salsa. It was a great fit. But if you're really hungry, you should definitely plan a starter or dessert, as the 3 tacos are served without any side dish such as salad or rice. What is particularly noteworthy, however, is the excellent tequila and mezcal selection. There is even an extra card for this and the advice from the service staff is really top-notch. The Classic Margarita can also compete with any top bar. All in all a successful experience. 👍

Good Mexican cuisine with fair prices.

We were there for dinner and were lucky to get two seats. The service was really very nice and we felt very comfortable. The food was really tasty and the waiter was also happy to help with the choice of food. The prices are fair and the selection offers something for every taste. We would go again if we weren't just in town visiting. The star deduction is only for the furnishings.

After eating German and Austrian food for many of our meals during our week in Bavaria, it was actually nice to have a change of pace for food. The food was good - although expensive and not quite as good as what we're used to in the U.S.; e.g., the guacamole was expensive and not very good; no chips and salsa. The service was excellent, and the restaurant is conveniently located.

I’d read several of the extremely positive reviews for the restaurant so my expectations were very high of what to expect. It was a nice enough location and pleasant staff. The food was ok, portions were rather small and what I would consider on the expensive side, but that seems to be the general level in Rothenburg. I ordered the veg. fajitas that were ok, accompanied by a small pot of salsa and a small pot guacamole and two tortillas. I’ve given it an average score, nothing exceptional, but nice enough. Hard to understand how this place has received so many very high scores. I guess we were the exception.

A Mexican, originally Franconian, restaurant. A strange but true statement. If you are skeptical ( why shall I go to a Mexican restaurant in Rothenburg? ), give anyway the Place a chance! The food we had was really delicious, very tasty and spicy too, as per Mexican tradition. Staff was super friendly, happy to help with Smile on their face every time. A Jem!
