Mommona African Restaurant in Frankfurt am Main

We were absolutely thrilled! We had the mixed platter for starters, followed by the tasting platter with meat and vegan specialties, and finished with three different desserts. Everything was delicious and freshly prepared. The service was very friendly and attentive, and we felt completely at home from the start.

Our visit: Yesterday, six of us were at Mommona: two children, two teenagers, and two adults. Since we have different eating habits (three omnivores, two vegetarians, and one who was craving fish yesterday), we ordered three different platters. I ordered the mixed meat platter without fish with my boys. The food: The food was simply delicious! The platter really filled us up, the portion size was perfect. As big fans of Eritrean cuisine, I have to say: It was once again absolutely outstanding. I also tried the fish, which was absolutely outstanding. Especially compared to our last visit to "In the Heart of Africa," where we were really disappointed, this was a real hit. Service and organization: We called an hour in advance and made a reservation, and it went smoothly. The reception was super nice and friendly, our table was nice and had enough space for all of us. The service was really fast, and the wait time was perfectly timed—not too long, but also not so fast that you had to worry 😉. You could tell that the food here is cooked with love. Conclusion: I highly recommend Mommona in Alt-Sachsenhausen! Super delicious food, great staff, fast service, and a beautifully decorated shop. A well-deserved 5 stars! Our tip: Call, make a reservation, and relax and enjoy a delicious meal.

The two of us came without a reservation. It was full inside, but we were still seated for two. We even got to go outside; the weather was fantastic. You immediately feel at home here. The food was excellent, different and delicious. The service and the setting were great and the music was so cool - funky jazzy instrumental tunes just the right volume so you could chat easily. Top marks for the ladies loo, clean, everything worked perfectly and well done with the added free extras - not seen this in any other restaurant on my 3.5 week driving tour of Western Europe (5 days in Belgium 8 days The Netherlands and the rest in Germany) eating out every night. My husband and I are visiting Frankfurt from Australia. We found this little restaurant and thought we would give it a try. Fantastic service atmosphere was great. Food was delicious we have never tried African food. It was a beautiful restaurant full of many African decorations. We will come again next time we are in Germany.

My girlfriend and I spontaneously ended up at Mommona one Sunday evening, and it couldn't have been a better choice. The outdoor area in Alt-Sachsenhausen immediately invites you to linger with its charming flair, while the interior impresses with its stylish ambiance, loving details, and absolutely spotlessly clean restrooms. The menu is a true discovery and offers an impressive selection for both vegans and meat lovers. We opted for a mixed platter, and every single dish was a hit. The aromatic spinach and tender lamb were particularly memorable. Even my girlfriend, who doesn't normally eat lamb, was completely thrilled. The wine selection also leaves nothing to be desired. The robust, perfectly tempered red wine (Cheraz) and the fresh, balanced Sauvignon Blanc are real highlights and harmonize wonderfully with the dishes. The service was simply first-class, warm, attentive, and with palpable passion for what they do. This complete package of cuisine, ambiance, and hospitality completely won us over. We'll definitely be back!

We spontaneously went to Mommona Afrika for dinner yesterday. It was our first time trying African/Eritrean cuisine. The spices weren't all that foreign, yet it was something completely different. It was very, very tasty; we ordered the tasting platter for two and an appetizer. The staff is very friendly and gives tips when ordering. Next time we're in Frankfurt, we'll definitely come back. It was fun eating with you. I just want to offer a little constructive criticism: The menu! The menu doesn't reflect what you are. It's a menu that you get everywhere else (in every German restaurant). It would be more fun to browse through a menu that reflects Africa. Nature and wilderness! A wooden cover, the individual pages made of real paper, or pictures from Africa as a "watermark." Somehow more you!

Easy to reach, Food was very good, service is excellent, they look after you without overwhelming you. Price is within the cost of eating out in a City like Frankfurt. To resume I recommend this place to try Ethiopian foods or just to celebrate a momentum alone or with your loved ones!

Pretty good Ethiopian place. Portions were on the small side, especially when it comes to meat. We sat outside so it took a lot of time to order something. But the food was on point, and so was the Injera was delicious.

We ate there a few days ago; the atmosphere is traditional and cozy. The food was delicious; we ordered a portion of injera for two people. It was truly delicious. Unfortunately, we couldn't finish it all. Since we were full at some point, they kindly allowed us to take the rest with us.

Mommona truly impressed us with its authentic cuisine! The tasting platter was diverse, freshly prepared, and beautifully presented. The samosas with various fillings were varied and very successful. The service was exceptionally friendly and attentive – so personal and honest that you can tell someone here really puts their heart into their work. The homemade lemonades and iced teas were beautifully presented and tasted truly delicious. You can tell that the work here is done with passion and dedication. An all-around impressive experience, highly recommended!

Super tasty and very nice service

I was at Mommona last Tuesday. The "Mommona Meat Tasting Platter" was delicious and included a nice selection of different dishes. The Dju Dju passion fruit beer was also very tasty. The staff is very friendly, attentive, and helpful. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also very nice and comfortable; you feel at home there. If I come back to Frankfurt, I will definitely stop here again.

Last Saturday, a group of seven of us ate at Mommona. There wasn't a single person at our table who wasn't impressed by the wide variety of flavors, whether meat or vegan. I've also rarely experienced such welcoming and warm service. It was my first time in an African restaurant, although I learned that not all Africa is created equal when it comes to cuisine. This is logical, considering the size of the continent. That said, I will definitely visit this very restaurant again and can only recommend it to everyone. In summary, it gets full marks for taste, value for money, and service.

10 out of 5 stars! We had the Gored Gored traditionally prepared (raw beef) and the date cream for dessert. The food and the extremely friendly, courteous service were terrific and you are also welcome with a dog. Any time!

The Eritrean dishes are full of flavor and perfectly seasoned - especially the injera and the various vegetarian combinations are a must! Eating at Mommona was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Zlzl (lamb) and Zgni Doro were incredibly aromatic, tender and prepared with so much love - I have never eaten them so well! The service was also great: friendly, attentive and authentic. The atmosphere is modern and cozy at the same time - you immediately feel at home. I'll definitely be back!

Let's start with the best: The food is really tasty and sufficient. The prices aren't exactly cheap, but the quality is good. Now let's come to the negative: we wanted to eat there with the Schlemmerblock, but due to “too much effort” we couldn't use it. It should be mentioned that it was Valentine's Day, but there should be no restrictions.

I loved everything about this restaurant, it was my first time trying out the cuisine and they did not disappoint! It was amazing also had the pineapple beer which was amazing too , the atmosphere is great , the deco is also great , just 10/10 for me . The waiter was very friendly, he was smiling the whole time and was switching between German and English to accommodate both my boyfriend and I . I highly recommend it, they also have good vegetarian options.

I was a guest for the second time and it was really nice again☺️. The ambience is attention to detail, the hosts are super nice and accommodating. But the most important thing for me is the food and I can highly recommend it. We had all sorts of delicacies on our mixed platter and together with the sourdough flatbread we had a dream. In the heart of Frankfurt Sachsenhausen is this authentic African restaurant with a great selection of delicious dishes and matching drinks. Special requests were fulfilled at no extra charge. The service was very courteous and attentive: drinks were poured at the table and the food was opened.

Really nice restaurant for get out of ur confort zone, looking for something different, stuff is super kind, but the food is ok, nothing special they could make the difference with the exotic flavours, but they looks like wanna make the food close to the costumers taste istead of be original, if u have a african cuisine, you have to be authentic, otherwise u arrive nowhere. I cannot say I didn't like the food, but neither I cannot say it was marvelous.

I ordered from Mommona via Lieferando. I had ordered several times and it was always very tasty. This time there were difficulties with the suppliers and after a long wait my order was canceled. The owner of Mommona, who could really be blamed for nothing, was indescribably important to ensure not only fairness but also satisfaction and tried very hard for me. He sorted everything out with Lieferando and now the delicious food is on its way to me! Thanks alot. A restaurateur with a heart, as is the entire family.

It was the second time in FFM and of course I had to go to Mommona again. And just like the first time, I was absolutely thrilled with everything! The food was once again incredibly tasty, the atmosphere was beautiful, fantastic beer/wine... but what makes this restaurant stand out and put everyone in the shade is the service... Wow. After a long travel day the last thing I wanted to think about was the hunt for vegan food. Just a short walk around the area and I stumbled across here. They instantly sat me down! The staff was friendly and fast. They offered recommendations as well. I had the vegan mixed plate and when it came they offered to teach me how to properly eat it (though I was familiar and didn’t need help so I simply thanked them). They continued to check on me which is not always common in German service. The food was quick to arrive and came with a side of all the spices and salt to accommodate people’s spice tolerance, it was absolutely delicious and hot. The decor was authentic African artwork and the ambience was lovely as well (they light a candle for your table). While some may say it is a bit pricier, it was not a regrettable decision to enjoy their food whatsoever. I felt as though I got exactly what I paid for. I also tried the vegan dessert and it’s a fair portion but my only complaint is that I would’ve wanted even more. Definitely food for any weather as well. If you’re looking to get good African food or maybe try something new. I would recommend this place. Thank you so much for your service. They also spoke English as well at the establishment. May have to go back everyday of my trip to Frankfurt.

Het was de eerste keer dat wij in een echt Afrikaans restaurant hebben gegeten en dat is ons goed bevallen. Het was een aangename verassing en na na twee avonden apfelwein restaurants een fijne afwisseling. Het restaurant is sfeervol ingericht en je zit er ruim. De medewerkers zijn vriendelijk en behulpzaam. We kozen voor twee “probeplatten “ voor twee personen; een vega en een vlees, beiden bestaand uit verschillende gerechten van de kaart. Het eten wordt fraai opgediend in grote schalen met een soort brood , het eten doe je met je handen, je rolt het vlees, de groenten en andere gerechten in het brood en eet het zo op. Het was allemaal erg lekker en zeker voor herhaling vatbaar. Onze zoon bestelde bier en dat werd geschonken in een schaaltje en dat moest je dus met twee handen drinken . Erg leuk en lekker. Ook de huisgemaakte limonade smaakte goed. De yoghurt na was ook een succes.

The food was a bit spicy for me but my father loved the meal. We had one meal for two (we were not too hungry) it was really good. The service was so kind and helpful woth everything. We sat outside bc of the nice weather but inside it could have been even better (beautiful african interior). We for sure recomend.

This used to be my favourite place in entire Germany. But this evening got ruined when the waiter brought us bill, without the discount that we were entitled to (the fork summer festival, if it's such a problem that people use it, please don't participate in the program). When I asked for it, he came back with a bill which included discount only for 6 instead of 8 plates that we ordered and even after excessive explanations, he still insisted that it's not their mistake and it's correct. Overall, food was amazing, service was after all great and we had really lovely evening, but this situation at the end spoiled everything.

It was a very welcome treat for the subsequent group game against Switzerland 🇨🇭. Chicken with couscous. I thought it was a little too spicy, which doesn't affect the 5 stars. The staff is great as is the restaurant.

We ended up over the gourmet block at Mommona. When we entered the restaurant we were impressed by the great decor, which seemed very authentic to us. The waitress was incredibly friendly and later even opened the door for us as we were leaving the restaurant and escorted us out. As a starter we had the Sambusa (4 fried dumplings) and as a main course the tasting platter with meat for 2 people. The dumplings were good, but we could have sat down for the main course. It was terrific - simply delicious. We also thought it was great that people here eat with their hands, as is traditional. To do this, you tear off a piece of the thin sourdough bread and use it to pick up the food (of course you can also get cutlery if you want). This was our first time eating African food here, but definitely not the last. A clear recommendation from us!
