African Violet in Frankfurt am Main

The ambiance was nice and the service staff were friendly. However, the food was unsatisfactory. My Jollof rice with chicken drumsticks was an absurd joke. €22 for 100-150g of Jollof rice (not very well prepared and dry) and two tiny chicken drumsticks (I had one large drumstick, and it was waiting, not two mini chicken wings like you get in America where they eat them by the bucketful) with a maximum of 50g of meat on them, if that, was an absolute rip-off. I finished eating after three minutes and was still extremely hungry, so I had to get two burgers elsewhere afterward (I wasn't willing to spend any more money on food at that place). For context: I usually eat small portions and eat them slowly because I have a rather small appetite. A "normal eater" would certainly be much more dissatisfied with that portion at such an exorbitant price.

The prices are a bit too high – you pay around €20 for fufu. While it's very tasty, it's a shame because the prices make it difficult to visit the restaurant more often. Reservations are definitely recommended. Be aware: you eat with your hands, but nothing is provided for cleaning beforehand. Even later, despite being told there was no paper towel in the restroom, there was nothing to dry your hands.

The food was delicious! We always like to try new things, so today we went to this African restaurant and ate several different dishes. We had a wonderful culinary evening, and the people here are very friendly. The desserts are also highly recommended! We'll definitely be back.

This was my first time eating fufu here; it had been on my wish list for a long time. My expectations were definitely more than met, and the service was extremely friendly.

I forgot to take pictures of my food but it was good. I had swallow with the peanut soup. It tasted more tomatoey than peanut, but it was still nice. I also know for a fact that I was not served fufu, so I don’t understand why they call it fufu when it isn’t. I don’t appreciate that so many African restaurants play into the stereotype; other than that, I can't complain. All I'm gonna say is just call your swallow what it is. Fufu is made from cassava only.

The food was good but not as great as the other restaurant we've tried. For it to be experienced once is okay but it's not something I would crave for and always come back to, like the other restaurants we often visit. The price ratio is also not that good. For the fufu is already around 20€ and the platte also around 20-22€. Though it can already fill you. I could just taste spicy that lingers in my mouth and lacks flavor on the dish. Like you cannot really taste the peanut butter in the sauce or not even a hint. But to each his own so might just try it for yourselves and you decide. The service is superb, fast and friendly. I appreciate that they can accomodate us with kids. Parking is kinda hard to find on a weekend.

We came here to try fufu for the first time. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't quite what we expected. Since you eat with your hands, we assumed something would be provided to clean them. When the food arrived, we went to the restroom ourselves. There was no paper towel to properly dry our hands. I informed the staff that the towels were empty, but they weren't refilled even later. During the meal, no one came by to check if everything was alright. And the table wasn't cleaned after we finished eating. We couldn't even sit down properly or rest our arms on the table. The food itself was very tasty, but even here, there are some drawbacks. The dips with bread, for which you have to pay for everything separately, came with far too little bread, making it impossible to finish them. The fufu was delicious, but at €20, it was quite expensive. My girlfriend and I both ordered the honey wine spritzer. The glasses were different sizes and filled, which isn't normal. The music also started to stutter at some point and was quite distracting during our conversation. On the positive side, the decor and the speed with which the food arrived were excellent. However, next time I would choose a different restaurant.

It was my first and last time there. The food wasn't tasty. Charging €20 for such a small plate is outrageous. I'd rather go to an Italian restaurant or a kebab shop where I'll be full for that price. For €20, I get 5 diced pieces of meat.

We drove over an hour there specifically because of the good Google review, so we were naturally very excited about the food. We were served quickly, and the friendly waiter was able to remember the entire order for three people perfectly without taking notes. That's rare to see! The appetizer was delicious, and the dips had flavors you'd never encountered before, which are also highly recommended. Since we'd already had fufu at another African restaurant, but the consistency was somewhat different, we wanted to compare. So, we had fufu with peanut sauce again. Unfortunately, the overall flavor (including the meat and sauce) was disappointing. The peanut sauce didn't come through at all. While it was generally tasty, it was still somewhat bland (keyword: cafeteria food), so we wouldn't order this dish again. Conclusion: The appetizer was very good. The main course was okay. If I lived nearby, a visit for the appetizer would be worthwhile. However, for a better rating, I would have to try another dish.

Super delicious! The fufu tastes great, the drinks are delicious. The staff are warm and very friendly. Unfortunately, two people aren't allowed to sit at a table for four, even if the place is empty, but that's okay if the rules state it and the staff have to follow them. We just found it a bit cramped at the table because we ordered a lot of food. Still, highly recommended!

The service was friendly and attentive, and I enjoyed the fufu, although I found the pieces of meat a bit too small and not very much for the price. The homemade iced tea is unfortunately just water with a splash of syrup, but it tasted good and was nicely decorated, though it could certainly be offered at a slightly lower price.

I ate at AfricanViolet with my husband today and had very high expectations based on many positive reviews. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. As Muslims, we are very careful that the food is halal. We asked the waiter directly about it. However, he seemed unsure, only half-heartedly confirmed that the food was halal, and later couldn't even explain what halal meant. Furthermore, the restaurant has neither an official halal logo nor any other indication of it. They also serve alcohol, which seems contradictory to us if they are truly offering halal-compliant food. The whole thing left me with the impression that the term "halal" is more of a marketing tool than an actual adherence to it. The service was also disappointing. The waiter seemed very unprofessional and seemed to be out of his depth. As for the food itself: Unfortunately, it was not tasty at all. It was far too bland, had hardly any salt, and was far from what I expected. However, I would like to highlight the location and the atmosphere. We really enjoyed both. Overall, we give it 2 stars for the pleasant atmosphere and ambiance. The food and service, on the other hand, were a huge disappointment.

We visited this very modern and stylish restaurant for the first time a few days ago. Our goal was to find fufu, and that's exactly what we got. My husband had the mixed platter for one with meat, and I had the fufu with beef sauce. The food was delicious (although the fufu didn't taste like anything to me personally and the sauce was very similar to an Italian Bolognese, my husband's platter was simply very versatile and excellent), and the wait wasn't particularly long. The drinks were also delicious; we had the homemade lemonades. The restrooms were clean and tidy. If only the service had been as good, because it really spoiled our experience at this restaurant. The young waitress/waitress barely paid us any attention; our order was taken with "So, what do you want?" We had to ask for our attention three times to pay. We were simply ignored. We understand that it might be hectic, but it wasn't very busy, nor were the waiters busy with other things. We suspect that service is generally very slow there. For us, it was a unique experience. But as I said, the food was delicious!

During our visit, the food was truly delicious and the service was attentive and friendly. Although the restaurant was almost empty, we waited over 45 minutes for our food. The red wines were particularly noticeable, disappointingly poor.

We were really looking forward to fufu, but unfortunately, no one came to our table outside. After about 20 minutes, I went inside and asked if they were serving outside and if someone could bring us the menus. The lady behind the counter kindly confirmed this. However, no one came for another 15 minutes, so we finally left. So, in total, we waited over half an hour without any service. This is completely unprofessional and disrespectful to the guests.

We were really looking forward to the meal, but unfortunately, there were a few things that really bothered us. To start with the positives, let's start with the appetizer: the samosas and dips were delicious. Now for the negatives: First, we waited a really long time for the food, and at least one of the hot dishes was already cold when it was brought to our table. Furthermore, one of the chicken dishes wasn't cooked all the way through. I definitely don't think the prices are justified for the quantity and quality of the food. Nice idea, but we wouldn't come again.

The food was authentic Ethiopian/African cuisine at its finest — we especially loved the veggie combo, the shire, the tibs, and the tibs firfir. The sambusa and ‘fufu’ were also fantastic, full of flavor and perfectly prepared. The service was exceptional every time — warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The ambiance is modern yet infused with beautiful African art, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Hands down, African Violet is a true gem in Frankfurt. We’ll definitely be returning on our next visit and highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Ethiopian/African food, wonderful hospitality, and a memorable dining experience.

Unfortunately, we had to wait 40 minutes. We had fufu with peanut sauce and chicken, and unfortunately, it didn't taste of peanuts at all—in fact, nothing but spicy. Unfortunately, there were only five pieces of chicken in it at the most. Very disappointed.

The food was delicious; we had three different fufu dishes. When we asked about a specific dish, which ingredients were included (because it wasn't listed on the menu), the staff couldn't provide us with any information (very difficult with intolerances and allergies!). Another disadvantage: there is only one toilet and one sink. If everyone eats with their hands, it quickly becomes congested at the restrooms. There are also a lot of food scraps in the sink, as if someone had vomited, which looks very unappetizing. We've been there once for the experience, but we wouldn't go again.

The food was extremely delicious. I had fufu and my father had injera. However, I think the "side dishes" for the injera were extremely limited, which is something we're used to from other restaurants. But all in all, the food was really delicious. BUT, right in front of us, a heated argument between the delivery person and the restaurant lasted for over an hour. The delivery was left sitting in the middle of the sidewalk for over 40 minutes. The cold chain for the meat and other refrigerated foods was definitely interrupted, and I generally find such discussions about who is responsible for bringing the deliveries into the restaurant in front of customers who are eating in peace highly unprofessional. Furthermore, we were forgotten when ordering drinks for the second time, and so we had to wait another 20 minutes for another drink. The food was really good, but under these circumstances, it definitely wasn't worth a repeat visit for me.

We arrived on time, and our order was taken promptly. But then the chaos began: The waiter took my phone to look for a code – and disappeared with it for a whole ten minutes! We had to wait about 40 minutes for our appetizer, and then another 30 minutes for the main course. The absolute low point: We found several hairs in the fufu – at least four! An absolutely disgusting discovery that completely ruined our appetite. We've been sick ever since. Something like that simply shouldn't happen. Unfortunately, I absolutely don't recommend it!

There was too much fufu and not enough sauce. The fufu was also hard and difficult to separate. I'm no fufu expert, but it just tasted like a potato dumpling with mensa goulash. Not highly recommended; you're better off buying a dish for €15 or so somewhere else.

A truly charming African restaurant with a lovingly designed outdoor terrace. The atmosphere was relaxed, the tables clean, and the ambiance was very inviting. I particularly liked the orange chairs and the thoughtful use of plants – ideal for a cozy evening with friends. The food was authentically seasoned and very tasty; I was particularly pleasantly surprised by the vegetarian options. The only small downside: the wait was a bit longer than expected – but the friendly service made up for it. Overall, a great experience with potential for a fifth star with a bit faster service. Not really convincing. We were there on a relatively busy evening, had a reservation, and ordered quickly. The food took 55 minutes from the time we ordered, which is too long. The taste was good, but paying almost €80 for two drinks, an appetizer, and two dishes isn't worth it. The portions were too small, and I'm wondering what drives the price up, especially with the vegetarian dishes. The outdoor seating, with its plastic chairs, isn't very comfortable either. All in all, not so convincing...

The magically colorfully furnished restaurant impressed us from the first minute. The service was courteous and never intrusive. The food was a dream of versatile spices and unknown dishes starting with a starter platter with delicious dips (chilli, date, tomato, hummus) as well as dumplings, beetroot salad and other small delicacies. The main course was a completely new experience, as fufu (a dumpling-like ball with, in my case, chicken and peanut sauce) is eaten with your fingers. It was fantastic. The Dorowot Alcha (the mild version) consisted of beef in a colorfully spiced, slightly sweet-tasting sauce that is incomparable to anything known. Unique. At the end, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony with freshly brewed coffee beans rounded off this wonderful evening. This evening was worth every penny.

The food was quite good, extremely salty and I found the side dishes extremely petty. For 18 euros you can serve more than 2 injeras. We waited a very long time for our food. Tap water was not served upon request. We ordered the rest to take away and half of it was simply thrown away and there was only half left. This is also about mass processing. The man behind the bar gave you a dirty look. I'm not happy that we left over 100 euros. I wouldn't come anymore.

Were there for the first time to try it and can't understand the hype surrounding this restaurant. Unfortunately the food really wasn't tasty. We had ordered original fufu and were both very disappointed. You could hardly get it down, the porridge was extremely hard in consistency, the meat was very strange and the portion was very very small and the price was very expensive. We drove an extra 3 hours to try it for nothing. No recommendation!

The food is really incredibly tasty, so full marks. In my opinion, there are too many tables in the restaurant itself, so it is always very crowded and therefore noisy. Conversations at normal volume are not possible, especially on weekends. But that's noticing at a high level.

We stopped by because of the video from a YouTuber Abugoku, and we were very excited. From the starter to the main course, everything was really tasty. I've never tasted flavors like that before, it was just a taste experience. The ambience is also very cozy and nice.
