[m]eatery restaurant & botanist bar Hamburg in Hamburg

Normally, if I don't like a restaurant, I simply don't return, because I know that a review can influence the business. This time, however, I have to share my experience. I had hoped to enjoy a wonderful evening with wine and steak, but unfortunately, I ended up disappointed. I ordered steak tartare and the restaurant's own German dry-aged rib-eye steak (medium rare). The tartare was okay, not particularly good, but acceptable. However, the real disappointment came with the "main event" of the evening—the steak: Although it was "properly cooked," it was extremely tough and tasteless. The piece consisted of about 90% very lean meat, and the remaining 10% was full of sinew. Even with lower-quality steaks, I have never eaten anything so dry and tough. After struggling through half of it, I had to leave the rest because my jaw was really hurting. 😅 Maybe it's not always like that, and I was just unlucky that day? I don't know, but oh well. The mashed potatoes were okay, but nothing special. The bread served with the appetizer was dry and hard. The staff was friendly and a bit more professional than average in Germany. Overall, the quality of the food was completely disproportionate to the price.

High expectations that were unfortunately not met at all. It took ages to get my cocktail/aperitif, both in the bar and in the restaurant. The menus also took forever to arrive. The food was okay, but not up to expectations. A real shame!

The meat is incredibly good. The side dishes and dessert are only average, but the ambiance and the high quality of the meat still made the visit an exceptional experience. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Hamburg.

We love Meatery! I honestly can’t say how many times we’ve been here over the years – but every single time, the food has been absolutely outstanding. By now, we’ve tried almost everything on the menu, and all I can say is: the Meatery is a true culinary highlight, one of a kind. Last time we had the beef tatar Mediterranean, Burrata & Chunky Cowder as starters, followed by the beef fillet, baked in salt crust, the brisket and some sides. As deserts we had chocolate brownie with thyme icecream and the half-baked cookie (these were to fast gone to make a picture). Everything was delicious, as always. I also quickly want to mention the friendly, fast and amazing service. Every single time, they were very welcoming and attentive. If you like good food and especially if sou are a meat-lover, you better don‘t miss out on the meatery! A visit to the botanist bar afterwards has become a ritual. Also very recommended!

Really delicious food, top service and overall just a nice place

After a very long time, we were craving a really good steak again. We were not disappointed. Great service, excellent waiters, and all the dishes were cooked to perfection. Highly recommended if you're not looking for a run-of-the-mill steak.

Service and quality in restaurants have become difficult these days. In this respect, (m)eatery is a notable exception, aside from the name play. The bar is highly recommended for an aperitif. Modern but pleasant ambiance. Professional behind the bar and then in the glass. A quick transition to the restaurant. I almost stepped on two very fluffy dogs. Apparently, no one can afford to do without dog owners anymore, hygiene or not. The menu then has a concept that is nicely explained. Don't worry, it's ultimately all about the food. The restaurant name says it all: steak is a passion in all its forms and preparations. Even the accompanying spinach is crisp, the ingredients homemade, the products absolutely digestible. Rounded off with a block of chocolate, a delight. Perfect check-out. A return visit guaranteed.

Despite not having booked, we were still able to get a table for two hours (perfectly adequate). The service was very pleasant and unobtrusive. Excellent tartar and very good meat cooked to perfection. A great Syrah. All in all, we were extremely satisfied. We'd be happy to return.

The steak was truly delicious and well-cooked. Unfortunately, the side dishes didn't quite measure up. One side dish was undercooked, so we sent it back. The new portion, unfortunately, wasn't much better. The restrooms were very clean and coolly decorated.

If you're looking for not just a unique steak but also a fitting experience to go with it, this is the place for you. The various tartars are exceptionally flavorful and make a great start. The brownie with thyme ice cream rounded off a perfect evening for me. The staff is competent and very friendly. I'd go back anytime.

A must-visit for lovers of good meat. In addition to the perfect meat, they also offer numerous appetizers, which are also highly recommended! The staff is always attentive and consistently friendly and competent.

We had the beef tartar, the carpaccio and the porterhouse. They were fresh, well executed and tasteful. There are plenty of choices when it comes to drinks and also the wines. The personnel is helpful and well trained. A pleasant experience overall.

Exceptionally good food. Of course, you'll pay more here than in a "normal" steakhouse, but the quality is truly impressive.

The Meatery in Hamburg is an absolute highlight for anyone who loves good meat. From the moment you enter, you feel welcome and at ease, even without a suit or fancy dress – every guest is valued and taken seriously. The meat and drinks were simply fantastic – perfectly prepared, full of flavor, and of outstanding quality. We were particularly impressed by an employee who took an exceptional amount of time to present the various cuts of meat to us on a slate board. He not only explained the grain and origin of the meat, but even shared details about the animals' feeding. This dedication made the visit a truly special experience and demonstrated the passion and expertise that goes into their work. A fantastic evening with first-class food, great service, and a relaxed atmosphere. We'll definitely be back – highly recommended!

Dear team, after visiting you yesterday, I have a huge problem. I'll never be able to step into another steakhouse without comparing it to yours. The food and service were unbelievably good. I know what I'm talking about, as I'm a food and beverage manager myself at a large company. A huge compliment goes to Valentin Steinroth, who gave us fantastic advice and service. A visit to your restaurant is definitely on our agenda for our next visit to Hamburg.

We expected a lot and got even more. The perfect evening. 1000% service and culinary excellence. You arrive as a guest and leave as a fan. It was an honor for us to be guests here.

I'm a hotel guest, and the reservation through reception went smoothly. The manager allowed us to change tables because, firstly, the narrow table in the middle wasn't comfortable. Once during the meal, a server kicked my chair without apologizing. This should be improved and the pace should be slowed down. The salad à la niçoise and the T-bone steak were delicious; the choice of ingredients and the service (regularly pouring drinks, changing plates and dishes, etc.) were very good. I would gladly recommend this restaurant to my colleagues.

We've been regular guests at both the hotel and the restaurant for 15 years! For health reasons, I'm currently only allowed to eat until 6:00 PM, so we arrived at 5:00 PM. With the reminder that I had to eat by 6:00 PM, we ordered and received another reminder at 5:40 PM. The result was that I couldn't eat the food I ordered, but at least I had to pay for it! The bottom line is, I'm going to bed hungry tonight and will return home tomorrow with the certainty that I won't be returning to the Side Design Hotel and its Meatery restaurant. For me, the [m]eatery is clearly one of the best steakhouses in Hamburg – right after the Arizona Steakhouse in Winterhude. I honestly can't count how many times I've been here: whether for a date, a marketing dinner, a company party, or just to enjoy a really good meal – it's always a great choice. Yes, the prices are definitely on the higher end, but you get consistently good quality on your plate. The restaurant itself is rather simple and classic. The bar has a bit of a typical hotel bar feel – which is kind of logical, since the restaurant is located right in the SIDE Hotel. It's still a regular stop for me when I'm looking for really good meat.

Excellent service, great drinks, and wonderful food. It's been on our wish list for a long time, and the wait was worth it. We'll definitely be back!

My husband and I went for dinner to celebrate our first anniversary. We thought it must be worth spending this kind of money. Everything starting great even though prices are quite high. Dinner was ok however service could be better for the amount you are paying. Once our main course was served our waitress completely disappeared and we had to get up to serve our self’s wine as we wanted wine with our main course and not later. When we finished dinner we asked for the desserts and this is when for our surprise the answer was the kitchen is closed… really? You are paying over 100€ per person for a dinner and you just get the answer that the kitchen is closed and you can’t have dessert? This is really not professional. Leaving your customers half way done with dinner. :( If you don’t want to be disappointed with the service then don’t go to this restaurant. Sorry.. I can’t recommend.

Er war professionell und präsent, ohne dabei aufdringlich zu sein. So geht Service! Die Vorspeisen Variation war ein Genuss, aber das Highlight war das Filet in der Salz-Kruste, was amm Tisch tranchiert worden ist. Absolute Empfehlung für alle Fleischliebhaber!

I’ve traveled the world and experienced some of the most exclusive dining destinations across the globe. This, by far, is the best steak I have ever had. The starter tuna tartare was exceptional, and the drinks were perfectly crafted. If you find yourself in Hamburg and crave an unforgettable steak, this is the place to go, nothing else comes close.

My husband and I were there on Friday, June 6, 2025, for a special occasion. We enjoyed the food; you could choose between fish and meat, as well as order a variety of appetizers. As my husband paid and we left the restaurant, we received a notification from the credit card app that a full €100 more had been debited than the agreed amount (including tip). My husband then returned about 30 minutes after leaving the restaurant and complained. There, he encountered impatient, annoyed employees who, instead of apologizing, brazenly assumed that a €100 tip had been agreed upon. (It was spoken loudly enough that it was €195, not €295.) This incident left a bitter aftertaste after our first visit, and the (initially) very charming, German-speaking waitress was unaware of any mistake. She may have already used this "trick" on other guests. What a shame! We would have loved to come back again.

The Meatery, along with the Botanist Bar, is part of the beautiful SIDE Design Hotel in Hamburg. I have been a guest at the Meatery many times myself – mostly when I'm staying at the SIDE Hotel anyway. First of all, I would like to highlight the restaurant's fantastic staff – always friendly, yet stylishly understated, and occasionally not at a loss for a witty remark or a little chat – simply in keeping with Hamburg etiquette, you could say. The culinary star of the Meatery is, of course, the meat. From my own experience, I can say: Once you've been to the Meatery and enjoyed the crispy grilled meat, it's hard to go back to a "regular" steakhouse. The steaks are also highly recommended as "tagliata" with a refreshing salad, and the diverse appetizers are also not to be despised. The delicious food is perfectly complemented by the wide variety of drinks, which are always brought directly to the Meatery from the Botanist Bar. Many thanks to the Meatery team for so many wonderful evenings already, and here's to many more to come!

Die Steaks sind so geschmacksvoll wie in keinem anderen Restaurant Hamburgs, die Weinkarte bietet immer was passendes zum Fleisch und die Desserts zergehen einem förmlich auf der Zunge. I was last at the Meatery a few years ago, and the food and service were very inconsistent back then. After my visit today, all I can say is, bravo! Excellent service, food, and cocktails were perfect. I can't fault it. Many thanks to the team for brilliant service and to the kitchen for an incredibly delicious steak, with side dishes that were every bit as tasty as the steak. This was rounded off with truly delicious cocktails. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

We felt very comfortable at Julian's bar for an aperitif and the same thing continued in the restaurant. The menu and concept were explained. Lisa is an excellent host with great recommendations. The food was also perfect. We'd love to come back.

Lisa accompanied us very professionally and cordially throughout the entire evening. You will be picked up right from the start by explaining the concept and answering all your questions confidently. We were in Hamburg for a week and after our first visit, we loved it so much that we ate there a second time. My partner and I had a wonderful evening at the meatery. Everything was almost perfect. Starting with the starter (salmon tartare and beef tartare) through the main course of 300 gr. beef fillet with side dishes and the very good veal jus to the surprise birthday dessert. Well, it's a bit expensive but quality, ambience and good service have to be paid for and we're happy to have that...

Excellent steak restaurant with style We decided on the fillet - and were completely convinced: grilled to perfection, accompanied by delicious side dishes and served in a stylish ambience. Particularly noteworthy is the exceptionally friendly and attentive service – simply top! One of the best services in a long time! The wine selection is high quality, but the Meatery Signature Champagne Aperitif is a real highlight. The crowning finale: the heavenly brioche dessert – it couldn’t be better.

Great restaurant with very friendly and informative staff (who can even give you good tips for preparing your own food 😉) and a very chic atmosphere. And none of it seems out of place.

Anyone who loves wine will get their money's worth. I really enjoyed the Escudo Rojo. The selection of good meat is impressive. My dry agenda New York was medium rare a dream!

Update 2025 And once again we were there to treat ourselves to a perfect (!!!) dinner. Special requests for a different table were fulfilled as well as nice, friendly, relaxed and professional service. The main thing...the food...I'm really not exaggerating, to be honest, the steaks there are incredibly good. Had the sirloin cut and tartare as an appetizer! Craziness!!! Unreserved recommendation to go there. If I were a cow, I would donate my body to the catering industry. Steaks of the finest quality, nice atmosphere, tartare as a starter is a must! When we are in HH an integral part of the weekend.

What is happening in this restaurant is simply unacceptable. A reservation for my family - my wife and two children - ended in a nightmare. My beef tartare: a tasteless, watery mass, apparently diluted with vinegar, the meat of questionable freshness. Instead of admitting that something went wrong, the waiter responded with nonchalant indifference. Not even a *semblance* of apology! But that's not all: our table was ignored the entire evening, as if we had made ourselves invisible. Meanwhile, the cook was presumably hiding - or was it the boss? – in the background instead of taking responsibility. An embarrassing demonstration of poor leadership. And as if that wasn't enough: my wife's steak, which was specifically ordered "medium", came rare medium rare. A sheer lack of respect for the guests – or simply technical incompetence? Conclusion: An evening that not only disappointed, but also destroyed any trust in this restaurant. Anyone who demands money for such negligence should urgently rethink their concept - or better yet, close it straight away.

Well, first the good news: The steaks tasted really good and were cooked to perfection. Staff was also friendly and knowledgeable about wine, but they were also too few and so they were overstretched. It took a very long time for us to get our first drinks, and they messed up our steak order. They took them back without arguing, but as we worked our way through the ones we got back, we had a strong suspicion that they were not the bone-in rib-eyes we had ordered (and eventually paid for). They didn’t have a fat eye, and the bone looked like a – 10€ cheaper – New York cut (see photo). They tasted great, though. In fact, it was the best steak I have had in a very long time – the perfect level of dry-aged nuttyness and cooked to perfection, so we didn’t have the energy to complain further. But we probably won’t be coming back.

Bueno, primero las buenas noticias: Los filetes sabían muy bien y se cocinaron a la perfección. El personal también era amable y conocedor del vino, pero también eran muy pocos y por lo tanto estaban demasiado ocupados. Nos llevó mucho tiempo tomar nuestras primeras copas, y nos echaron a perder el filete. Se los llevaron de vuelta sin discutir, pero a medida que nos abríamos paso a través de los que volvíamos, teníamos una fuerte sospecha de que no eran los ojos óseos - en costilla - que habíamos ordenado. No tenían un ojo gordo, y el hueso parecía un – 10 € más barato - corte de Nueva York (ver foto). Pero sabían genial. De hecho, fue el mejor filete que he bebido en mucho tiempo – el nivel perfecto de nuez seca - envejecida y cocinada a la perfección, por lo que no tuvimos energía para quejarnos más. Pero probablemente no volveremos.
