Katerschmaus in Berlin

We went there on a Friday night for the party upstairs and spontaneously ended up in this restaurant. We had one of the best Beef Tartars ever, served as it is supposed to be, with the running egg yolk on top and all spices and condiments on the side and not destroying the beef taste by throwing everything on top as many others do. The fresh water fish baked in palm leaves was very very delicious and truly enough for two. Only negative is that there was strong cold air stream in my feet from the terrace door. and there restrooms could be cleaner.

Few options and expensive for dinner

Such a lovely place! The food was excellent, the service was professional and the atmosphere was palpable. Great spot for fancier dates and get-togethers.

OVERRATED!! We were here for the first time. The location itself is cool, beautifully situated by the water, but unfortunately, there were hardly any shady spots. After finding a table whose reservation had expired an hour ago, all we had to do was be patient. We waited forever for the menu, then 25 minutes for our bottle of wine. The guests around us experienced the same thing. Although the service was friendly, they were completely overwhelmed. After what felt like an eternity, our food arrived: a salad, a vegan bowl, and a tarte flambée. ...I've rarely eaten such a mediocre meal. The wine was really not good, the food absolutely not worth the money, and the service was really bad. For just under €100, a real disappointment, considering you just had to eat here at least once. This was the first and last time! The icing on the cake, however, was that the service was lousy, possibly due to a lack of staff (it was full - holiday, nice weather) - the manager, who was there, didn't care. That was unbelievable. Any good manager would have just pitched in. So sad!! You shouldn't invest any more money here! Despite the cool location, we definitely won't be back. All in all, a truly mediocre restaurant that only survives because of its name. What a shame.

The service was simply perfect. Appetizer: The mussels were good, with an Asian touch. In my opinion, the spring onions could have been fried briefly. Main course: I had the fillet steak with green beans, bacon, and truffle mashed potatoes. The beans were nice and crisp, the mashed potatoes were flavorful, and the steak was cooked to perfection and tender; it melted in my mouth. I also had a lovely Portuguese wine that went very well with the food. Dessert: Espresso, very, very good. I highly recommend the food here.

I really enjoyed it once again. The place is sensational, and so is the service: It still brings a smile to my face when I think of all the hosts. The only thing that didn't completely satisfy my palate was the food. It was the vegan main course, and I found it uninspiring. But everyone's experience is different. It's definitely a recommendation!

Fantastic gem hidden behind Holzmarkt right by the river. Really delicious food, super friendly service and great atmosphere. The decor - especially the door to the toilet - is an experience in itself.

We went on a rainy evening. Didnt really get a view of the spree. Food was ok, we had salmon 4/5, potato and cheese croquettes that tastes like gnocchi 1/5, baked cauliflower with curry powder maybe 4/5, potato gratin 3/5 spinach with cream 3/5 ;u probably do well with just drinks. the service staff were of extremes. Two acted like we owed them but another was extremely inviting. Good luck

We had a particularly lovely evening at Katerschmaus. It was our first time at this restaurant. Although it was a bit difficult to find, we were amazed at the fantastic location on the waterfront, which is admittedly a bit quaint. With the fantastic weather, we naturally sat outside and were able to watch the boats sailing by while we ate. The food was outstanding. We had steak, and the kitchen cooked exactly as we ordered. That's not always the case in some restaurants. The staff were very friendly, and we received prompt service. The prices are a bit high.

The food was quite good. The location was nice, too. However, the waiter was extremely rude. I've never experienced anything like it. A typical Berlin attitude. It really ruined our evening. We had to constantly call a colleague to order, and the wrong drinks were delivered. It was also ridiculously expensive. Overall, not recommended.

Beautiful place right on the water

If you want a Berlin style dining experience, this place has to be on top of your list. Right from the location of Holtzmarkt, to the staff, everything about the place is Berlin.

Proper little hidden place that we only found because we were sheltering from the rain... just stopped in for a couple of beers and a bowl of fries, and sat on the terrace, while the rain subsided. The food being served did look good though...

Zero points for the service. It was unfriendly, inattentive, slow, and arrogant. The waiters here think they're kings. Anyone who has ever enjoyed fine dining in Baden-Württemberg, the Palatinate, or Franconia must be shocked by the careless way the service is delivered here. This isn't typical Berlin style or charming; it's bad - period. We weren't given good advice on our meal selection, we weren't asked what we thought of the food, we waited forever for the bill and had to ask three times. The same thing happened at the neighboring tables: a party of four wasn't allowed to place their order, nor was a young family with children allowed to receive the bill. Terrible. The food was overrated. Too average for the prices. The location was great, the decor too. But overall, a tourist rip-off. No Berliner who knows fine dining goes here. I told several friends and colleagues about this restaurant experience, and they all had the same bad experiences. I assume the good reviews are fake. If you want to eat really well and be served appropriately, go somewhere else.

Order the family style chateaubriand with the green beans & bacon! It'll be the best meal you've had in a long time. Great atmosphere alongside the river as well.

Awesome place. View of the Spree. The food is sophisticated and something completely different. The menu changes regularly. The ambiance is very industrial. It gets especially beautiful as it gets darker, thanks to the many small fairy lights. If you prefer something more rustic and alternative, stay upstairs at the Holzmarkt. Also nice. Open air.

Simply excellent. The seating is very pleasant, right on the Spree, the service is excellent and attentive, and the food is well worth the very high prices. It's ideal for celebrating a special occasion.

Traditional atmosphere, nice place where to eat alongside the river. Food we tried were good and tasty. The surprise came when at the bill we discovered the price of a small amount of white plain rice we asked for as side: 8€. Couldn't believe it!

The experience I had today in this restaurant is something I have never had before. My girlfriend and I were at the Holzmarkt and wanted to have a nice meal for her birthday. Originally we had planned to go to a blockhouse. But when we saw the restaurant from the outside, the ambience looked very aesthetic, so we spontaneously decided to take a look inside. Of course we asked at the reception and were told that we were welcome to take a look inside, which should really be normal, especially as there were only two of us. Once we got inside, the look also appealed to us. As we took two steps further, a waiter came towards us and asked us if we could get help yet. We replied “We are just looking around” because it looked really appealing from the outside. Then came the shock: the waiter's statement: "People eat here, this isn't a museum, so you can either eat something here or please (points towards the exit)." I was shocked at how unprofessional the waiter treated us. And as if that wasn't enough, he went to reception and told the man who had greeted us at the entrance that he shouldn't let anyone in who just wanted to look around. My girlfriend, the receptionist, and I were completely overwhelmed by the situation. But he didn't even apologize. That's how you ruin a 28th birthday for no reason and lose customers.

Everything is absolutely fine!!

Great food, so-so service... We ate here on our wedding anniversary, but the service wasn't very friendly, which unfortunately somewhat dampened the atmosphere. With a reservation and stating the occasion, there was nothing. A table in the alleyway, no decorations, and no congratulations. It was just an average evening, and a hefty bill for that. The runner was great, though!

The location is simply fantastic... by the water with sunshine... what more could you want? But the pizza and spritz weren't really that impressive. The pizza wasn't baked in the restaurant or brought out in a box. Therefore, it wasn't very hot. Next time, we'll go a la carte...

We ate here with friends and were absolutely thrilled with how friendly, attentive, and competent the staff were. It really put us in a good mood. The food was also excellent, just as the exceptional menu promises! We'll be back 😉👍

I had actually planned to round off a wonderful day with a delicious dinner with my family. The setting was perfect. Then the service came. I can't comment on the food because I've never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant as I did here, and I left after my glass of wine. I understand that everyone has bad days, but this employee was just incredibly unfriendly. My visit was over a month ago.

A rather interesting and incredibly diverse spot on the Berlin map in terms of appearance and atmosphere. Located directly on the river, it allows for observation of the water and the ships moving across it. The offerings are wide and varied. You can eat, drink, and listen to music during the day, while in the evenings, it transforms into a disco haven for thrill-seekers.

The ambiance gets a half-star deduction for the wooden benches, but otherwise the place is really nice. We also enjoyed the food, but unfortunately, the service was either completely overwhelmed or rude. Good, and especially polite, service is what makes for a successful evening, and unfortunately, we didn't have that.

Fantastic food, excellent service, cool location!

Food was excellent. We took the tarte flambée, asparagus and the chicken. We can feel the products are fresh and well prepared. We also took the thym lemonade which was very good and not too sugary. We were quick to be served by a very agreeable staff in an amazing atmosphere by the river. I recommend the place ! Try to have the tables by the river for an even better experience.

Good food and beautiful ambiance right on the river. Unfortunately, the service really let the experience down. Our waiter was inattentive and slow; we had to repeatedly ask just to place an order, and it took 1.5 hours from arrival to actually getting our food. For those prices, I expected better. If you’re not in a rush (or not very hungry), it’s worth visiting Katerschmaus for the setting and cuisine. Otherwise, be prepared to wait.

One of my worst experiences in a restaurant.

Unfortunately, not at all! We had reserved a table for Sunday 11 days in advance. It was an hour's drive. When we arrived, I was told I could have my table, but they only serve pizza on Sundays. I had confirmed this by email. I confirmed my appointment, but not the limited menu... It would say so. That's true, it says they serve pizza, but it doesn't indicate that they serve nothing else. He would have called me on my landline, but after an hour's drive, I had already left the restaurant. He had a cell phone number and an email address. Why did he call 11 days later and not immediately upon reservation? Sorry, unfortunately, I failed completely!

Nice location but slow service and the food was average at best. for the price you should expect a better chef. The fish dry, the beans not well cooked, the gratin without taste …

To spend a few relaxing hours...in the middle of the city ..in a green area with a lake...fantastic

We spontaneously snagged a seat here while strolling through Berlin; through the open patio doors, we had a beautiful view of the Spree River in the evening light. The menu offers some classic dishes as well as some that aren't offered in every restaurant. These are very attractively presented, so the visit offers something for the eye as well as the taste. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Overall, the quality comes at a price, which you have to be prepared for, but at the end of the visit, we were happy to pay.

As a closed group, we had a separate room with a terrace facing the Spree. The food was very tasty and the service was very good and attentive.

Beautiful place on the water. We wanted to have lunch here and came in at 1:45 PM but they couldn't take any more orders because they close at 3:00 PM. It was also very busy but there were still more than enough tables available. We spent the rest of the afternoon on the terrace upstairs and returned for dinner. Service varies. A very friendly waiter and the other was moody to say the least. We had to wait a long time for the food and first received the order from another table. It took a long time before we got the attention of the waiter and the plates went straight to the right table, which then received a cold dish. The price quality is certainly not in proportion to the service level and quality of the food. I had a special, cold asparagus with rock hard potatoes and 2 pieces of chicken. I expected a lot more from this, but that's personal of course. They could have sold many more drinks but we constantly struggled to get the attention of the staff and our glasses remained empty. All in all we had an enjoyable evening but don't think we would return here.

We had already been sitting for 20 minutes and had chosen... no one came to order... when we asked the waitress, she took the cards and ran away... what AMAZING! We sat on the terrace for 20 minutes only to be told it was too full. What an impudence!

Brought meat instead of the vegan dish. There is a vegan Bolognese and one with meat on the menu. When we asked whether it was really vegan, the waiter said that it had been ordered vegan but that the chefs had unintentionally brought the Bolognese with meat. Unfortunately it doesn't work at all. The waiter apologized sweetly, but the chefs didn't. Sorry, but it's just a no-go, it has to go in here for other vegans.

Better than walking around the center

The place is spectacular. Beautiful, comfortable, and delicious, although it's not cheap either. Very good service. We had a dish of the day, which cost between €15 and €17, plus drinks.

A truly excellent restaurant. Dishes prepared with love in an open kitchen, inviting you to linger in this beautiful and very romantic ambiance. PS: Matze (the manager?) is truly very attentive and one of the friendliest people I've probably met in my short time in Berlin.

I had a very nice evening. Staff are always in a good mood and always “on hand”. For me that evening I only had the tartare because I was too excited about the party. That was great, even the little sauces with it mmhhhh. The cocktails were also delicious. The ambience and the people rounded it off. That evening there was a cozy mix of families, dates and the usual hipsters. My personal highlight is the terrace directly on the Spree. In the evenings there is a fire and you can make yourself comfortable with a drink and a cigarette. I felt the prices were fair for what was on offer. Just one thing. When you use the toilet, you should be careful when turning the water on and off. My brother and I got ourselves completely wet. A waterfall shoots out if you turn too hard. They were nice at the beginning and then when it came to cutting the cake they wanted money for it. The barman was so cheeky that they ruined the whole birthday. I won't give them money so I can eat my cake. They tell us something like that beforehand and not after my great bill is for hundreds of euros. So pathetic

Conclusion: The mood was ruined! Our birthday was a complete failure and we left the restaurant very quickly. My tip: Learn to communicate friendly with your guests! A thank you to the waiter – he was really very nice! I went to this restaurant to celebrate my mother's birthday. We hadn't even had a chance to order food when I went to the waiter and asked if it was okay to bring the little bento cake I had baked for my mother. He replied that it was no problem. When the bartender heard this, he reacted angrily and told me that we had no right to do that - instead we had to pay €4.5-5 per person (there were three of us) and he wasn't interested. I would like to emphasize that he spoke to me rudely. As a matter of principle, I said that I wasn't willing to pay that much and instead asked to at least be allowed to take photos with the cake. He finally agreed to that. How am I supposed to understand this if one allows it and the other doesn't? What kind of politics is this? Why weren't we informed about this in advance? I asked to at least get a discount since it was a birthday. But he categorically refused.

I recently visited a restaurant and had mixed experiences. The waiter who served us was dressed in flashy, colorful clothes, which was likeable in a way, but clearly overshadowed his arrogant and cheeky manner. I had to pull myself together. When ordering, I felt like he was rather disinterested and condescending. Unfortunately, this attitude spoiled the overall impression, although the food was actually quite good (a little too dry, unfortunately) and served too carelessly. Plate and a piece of meat and a dollop of sauce, no decorative salad or anything, that's it. The atmosphere in the restaurant was pleasant and welcoming, which was a positive aspect. It would have been nice to have one of the other waiters who seemed friendlier and more attentive. Overall it was a mixed experience. The food and atmosphere were great, but the service took a serious hit.

Very original restaurant with great service, great ambience and excellent quality of food. The restaurant is a bit hidden but is easy to find because it is well signposted. The service was very accommodating and friendly. And the food is beyond reproach. I had the mussels as a starter, what can I say, the best mussels that have ever touched my tongue. The main course (the beef fillet) was on point. My wife chose the fillet of skrei, also perfect. The price of the restaurant is a bit upscale, but the price-performance ratio is good because you really get quality. Absolute recommendation.

One of my favourite places to bring the visitors of Berlin over. My experience has always been fantastic - with food, curated selection of drinks and the staff is just the absolute sweetest. Your guests are bound to stay in awe with the quirky interiors. And let me tell you - I haven’t yet visited this place in the best (warm) season, which definitely gives it a benefit of a gorgeous view and a one-of-a-kind riverbank terrace.

Ein toller Fleck Gastro-Liebe! Großes Kompliment an alle Beteiligten. Service unfassbar gut. Aufmerksam, sympathisch und einfach gekonnt in allem was getan wird. Das Essen ist nicht nur unfassbar lecker, sondern auch sehr gut abgestimmt in der gesamten kulinarischen Ausrichtung. Dazu leckere Weine. Und nochmal: der Service haucht dem Laden mindestens genau so viel Leben ein, wie der gesamte Charme der Location. Großes Kompliment. Hier wird tolle Arbeit geleistet. Ich komme wieder sobald ich nochmal in Berlin bin.

During the day we were exploring Holzmarkt 25 and really liked the area. When we were walking around, we stumbled upon Katerschmaus. We made a reservation for our date night and had a great time!! Really cool place, delicious food and friendly staff!

We had our Christmas party at FAME and were all really excited about the stylish location by the water. The service team was very attentive and well-coordinated and the 3-course menu from the live kitchen was very tasty. Our people had a really nice celebration until after midnight. At the end the tables were cleared away and people danced. The music system is awesome, by the way! Many thanks to Desma!

Nice restaurant, modern, on the water, open kitchen. Prices are quite high. Had to wait a long time for the food. We decided on three components for two, which was a good choice. The fish was also a good portion. For some meat dishes it was quite small. Everything tasted ok. Overall a bit too expensive.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant and I can confidently say that it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The ambience of the restaurant further with "warm lighting and cozy seating. For the starter I tried the mussels and celery based “Sellerie aus dem Salzteig” these were amazing. I decided to try the fish for the main course and I was absolutely blown away. Every bite was sumptuous, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The attention to detail was evident, from the seasoning to the presentation. It was clear that the chefs take great pride in their craft, and the result was a truly memorable dish. Overall, my experience at this restaurant was fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a delightful meal in a beautiful setting. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their menu!

Ich war mit Nicht-Berlinern hier. Sie sehr positiv überrascht, an dieser Stelle eine so gute Küche zu finden. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall im Sommer wieder, um die ganze Atmosphäre vom Holzmarkt und der Terrasse am Wasser zu erleben. Vielen Dank auch für den sehr freundlichen Service!

We had a business lunch there. I had a Caesar salad with shrimp. It was okay so far, but nothing special. Somehow the pep was missing. The other dishes looked good too. Pleasant atmosphere right on the water, very coolly decorated. Staff was attentive, but could have been a little nicer.

Zauberhaft wie immer, im Holzmarkt zu sein, aber der Mittagstisch im Katerschmaus ist echt besonders. Das Essen ist hervorragend und viel, alles ist liebevoll gemacht und die Stimmung ist entspannt und gehoben.Es war schoen!
