Not recommended. Overpriced and tastes rather so-so. The pork knuckle doesn't even come with sauerkraut... You have to order it separately. The service was okay. A place for tourists.

The Haxenbauer has moved from the Scholastic house to the valley. Unfortunately, the current ambience cannot keep up with the old one, the new furniture cannot decide between Bavarian kitsch (just look at the new logo) and purist canteen flair. Much more important: the knuckle. And it is actually different than before, I would say even better! In the Scholastic house, the knuckle was grilled over wood, so the aroma was particularly special. I don't think that's the case anymore. I think the knuckles are now cooked sous vide because the meat falls off the bone. The crust is bronze in color, sounds like a forest of leaves and is incredibly easy to bite and cut, it appears thin and “eater friendly”. That means: the former robust scholastic house knuckle has become the new, really very fine knuckle in the valley, all served with beautiful plates. I personally like the new version better. I would say I have never tasted such good knuckle, really refined. If you want to eat a great knuckle, you have to go to the Haxnbauer. The only drawback: the industrial potato dumplings and the loud music. If you pay €21.50 for half a knuckle, you can really expect homemade dumplings, and also the option of a bread dumpling. And I don't know how other people handle it, but when I go out to eat I usually have a conversation with the person I'm talking to. There’s no need for music. The city center, which has mutated into a pure shopping mall, is loud and tiring enough anyway. Oh yes, and the waiters do a great job. Anyone who complains here should do a shift themselves. So the knuckle is good, the service is good, the ambience is okay, but the knuckle has priority, hence 5 stars.

We had a perfect table right next to the glass wall that opened onto the sidewalk. The waiter was very friendly and really quick, he had us 10 men completely under control with extensive drink orders. My pork knuckle was excellent, the crust was crisp and easy to cut, and the meat was juicy. The gravy that was served with it was also very good. The ambience is great, a very successful mix of traditional elements (especially the photos) and a newly renovated, modern but stylish interior design. We'll be back!

Haxe was still raw. The two of us ordered a knuckle, which looked very good from the outside, but it was not yet fully cooked and we only noticed this when the pink meat juice was visible on the plate and left the food. When I complained about this to the really nice waitress, the young boss came to the table and said that the knuckle was cooked through and I had to pay for it. I showed him the bloody plate and said that a price like you can't judge what a Bavarian knuckle should normally be like and that he should continue to sell the food to the many Chinese and price people who were in the business because they might not notice or care about something like that. And that I'm happy to pay the bill because I don't want anything from him as a gift. It's OK for drinking beer and maybe a pretzel, but not for eating!

Based on my extensive experience trying this dish in various places, this is arguably the best place to enjoy authentic Schweinshaxe in the city. Many schweinshaxe experiences have left much to be desired—some so excessively salty that one might question whether they were inadvertently consuming seawater, whilst others featured exteriors so unyieldingly hard that they seemed better suited as makeshift hammers than as an enjoyable meal. The distinction between pleasantly crisp and disappointingly tough can be rather significant, and many establishments unfortunately fall into the latter category. Haxnbauer, however, has perfected the art. Their schweinshaxe achieves the ideal balance: the exterior maintains a delightful crispness without venturing into tooth-threatening territory, whilst the interior remains remarkably tender and flavourful. The accompanying sauce complements rather than overwhelms, and the traditional Knödel (potato dumplings) offer an appropriate texture and taste that harmonises splendidly with the main attraction. The side dishes deserve special mention as well. Both the fresh salad and the sauerkraut demonstrate thoughtful preparation. The sauerkraut particularly impressed me—it avoided the excessive sourness that often plagues inferior versions, instead offering a pleasantly mild tanginess with a satisfying crunch. These accompaniments provide a well-considered counterbalance to the richness of the pork. For visitors seeking an authentic German dining experience in Munich—one that captures the essence of traditional Bavarian cuisine—Haxnbauer requires no deliberation. Difficult to rate because I ate my first knuckle or half knuckle here. Overall, I found the food to be pretty average. Half the knuckle was ok, but it didn't blow me away. The price was again quite reasonable, along with the beer. We received friendly service and really liked the ambience. Next time I would probably order something different.

I had the pleasure of visiting an outstanding restaurant in Munich, and it has quickly become a favourite. Having dined there three times, it's become a staple on each visit to the city. What stands out immediately is the exceptionally friendly staff, who are not only well-versed in English but also in other European languages. Their helpfulness extends beyond language skills, as they are keen to offer menu recommendations and provide advice on portion sizes, ensuring you have the perfect dining experience. Among the many delightful dishes, the Eisbein deserves a special mention I had the half portion as seen in the photo provided(half is enough for one person the full sized one is MASSIVE). This dish is particularly amazing, with its perfectly crispy crackling on the fat—it's crispy but not too hard that you can't bite into it, achieving the perfect texture. The meat itself is succulent, juicy, and packed with flavour, truly embodying the excellence of the cuisine offered here. The other food at this restaurant is equally commendable. Every dish I've had has been delicious, prepared with high-quality ingredients, and presented beautifully. The service is impressively swift; there's little wait time between ordering and the arrival of your meal. Additionally, the beer selection is top-notch, featuring a variety of choices to complement the delectable food. For dessert, I would highly recommend trying the apple fritters. These delightful treats resemble little apple doughnuts, freshly fried and then flambéed with a splash of alcohol. This not only makes for a fun dining experience but also tastes incredibly good. While the restaurant is a tad pricier compared to similar establishments, the quality of the food and the exceptional service make it worth every penny. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Munich. It's a dining experience you won’t want to miss, and a place you’re bound to enjoy. Rating: 5/5 stars

The Haxnbauer - since the renovation a restaurant with neutral charm, mediocre food but an iconic name. Since reopening at the beginning of 2025, the Haxenbauer has unfortunately lost its beautiful Munich atmosphere. The furniture is generic and only reminds you of old times through pictures on the walls. There is no longer any trace of worn tables that told the story of those sitting at them. Too bad... The food is - and to be honest it was like that before - ok solid. The Haxe really may be one of the best in Munich. The side dishes are average at best. What is really positive is the vegetarian offering. The service is fast and aimed at tourists. And unfortunately the whole store is like that now. Nothing of the time-honored tourist shed anymore, just the more ingratiating tourist shed

The wait lady looked really polite, but she was abrupt. I repeated our order so just to ensure everything was correct, but she stopped me, telling me she got it, with high voice. When we finished and about to pay, she forced me to pay tips, "5%, 10% or 15", I said to her no tips, she repeated the question again for 3x. I finally gave 5%. After that, my young son used the restaurant's tissue. The same lady came and cleaned up the table, she argued with my son and my wife that the tissue was not from the restaurant, hence she didnt want to clean it, she picked everthing up but the tissue, she asked my wife to pick it up and threw it elsewhere. Germans are known to be polite and friendly, I dont think she is German! Strongly suggest go elsewhere, pork knuckle was not that great anyway.

- Pork knuckle had a very tasty crispy crust, but the meat itself could have been a little juicier; The sauce and the potato dumpling were rather boring for my taste - Veal knuckle, Leberkas and Kässpatzen were well received by those accompanying them - the pieces of knuckle from the children's menu were unfortunately mixed with a strange tasting sauce and the fries were hidden underneath; After the child didn't like the dish, we adults also tried it and had to agree => we told the service person who didn't comment or ignored it; That could have gone better, hence minus points for the service - Overall portions are rather smaller compared to those at other Munich taverns (with similar prices) - Atmosphere less cozy due to high volume even though it wasn't full and lots of bright lamps; Unfortunately it had a bit of a canteen feel to it; the seating area/bench was also uncomfortable, especially the backrest; The pillows didn't help either

After a long abstinence due to the closure, we now had the opportunity to stop at Haxnbauer again at the weekend. We reserved a table, which is highly recommended. Due to the trade fair, service personnel had to be hired out because the rush was huge. The service was very good and we had a very motivated employee who was always friendly and asked frequently whether everything was OK. and he can still bring something. The food was very good and filling, unfortunately there were no more fried potatoes on the menu. However, this didn't hurt the good mood and the good food. Unfortunately, it is a little louder in the room (due to its design) and therefore you have to communicate a little more intensively at the table.

Brand new in Munich, but with a very long tradition and a 60-year-old secret recipe, as I read, we wanted to try out the Haxenbauer. A very nice Bavarian restaurant with high-quality furnishings and the veal knuckle and pork knuckle we ordered with dumplings, sauce and coleslaw were really tasty! The service is quick and courteous. We were checked several times to make sure everything was satisfactory and it was completely! The cold fresh beer tasted great too! An all-round successful lunch at an absolutely solid price. We can definitely recommend Haxenbauer and would be happy to come back!

Sorry, it was a complete disaster from start to finish. Both the service and the taste, the portion size and the pricing. And if the quality is higher and/or a large portion, I'm completely okay with paying a certain price, but you can get better and fuller plates in numerous restaurants within a 1 km radius for the same price (if not even cheaper). I read in the reviews that the owner justifies the small portions by saying that he used to have to throw away more with larger portions, but two questions remain in my mind: 1. If the portion for a duet of veal and pork knuckle is so small, since customers always left so much left over, why is the cheaper portion of half pork knuckle not so small? Sounds like a cheap excuse to legitimate criticism to me. 2. Maybe people have returned the food so often because it just doesn't taste good? Apparently the train of thought went too far, which is why the portions were simply reduced in the first instance. It's just a shame for me, because me and my family were really looking forward to Haxn, but everyone had to go home very disappointed. I hope that something changes in the tour so that more tourists don't have to fall for this rip-off and can leave Munich with good memories.

very roomy restaurant, perfect for bringing a group or family in. tables and seats don't feel like a tavern which makes moving around very convenient. waiters are very nice and amiable, very considerate of English-speakers. food servings were massive for my Asian guests, but just right for everyone else. they accept card which was convenient. even when the restaurant started to fill up, it never felt suffocating or rowdy despite the occasional noisy drunkard, which I am sure families will appreciate. of note, when the restaurant fills up, the waiters tend to forget orders, requiring you to follow up every now and then.

We had reserved a table for 2 people, expressly not a high table. When we arrived we were supposed to sit at a high table, which of course we didn't want. The normal tables are all reserved (yes, one of mine!!!). We were then seated at a small table right next to the entrance, next to the reception counter. Fast and constant traffic. It wasn't full and we could have been seated at a table for four, as some were free throughout our stay. The service was nice, but slow, even though it wasn't full. The pork knuckles looked good and the guests at the next table had them, but we deliberately wanted to order something different. We ordered a mixed meat platter and, to try it, also the vegetarian version. Neither was really that good that I would go there again. As the saying goes, “you can eat”, but nothing more. Conclusion, I was disappointed. It's more for tourists.

Specialists in pork loin A food guide recommended this restaurant to us as one of the best places to try traditional pork knuckle in Munich. With this expectation, we showed up without reservation. Luckily, the place was not full and we were quickly seated at a spacious table. The service was impeccable: attentive, fast and very efficient. We didn't have to wait long to have the food on the table. We started with a fresh and well-seasoned salad to balance what came next: the famous pork loin. Big, well-roasted, with the skin crispy and golden, while the meat was tender and flavorful, practically falling apart on its own. A hearty and delicious dish, perfectly cooked. Obviously, beer could not be missing to accompany this Bavarian experience. Well chilled and served in a jug, it rounded off a meal that met all expectations. A place fully recommended for lovers of good traditional cuisine.

I was at Haxnbauer with friends yesterday because I wanted to try out the new restaurant. Unfortunately, neither the food nor the ambience meets expectations. We ordered the knuckle duet because we wanted to try different dishes: the pork knuckle was okay, but the veal knuckle was undercooked. In addition, the food came to the table almost cold despite the warmed plates. One portion was missing the sauce, which had to be reordered. Therefore only 2 points. Thank God the service was quick and friendly: 4 points. But what really bothered us was the unbearable noise level in the restaurant: it was hardly possible to have a conversation even with the person sitting next to us at the table. Therefore only 1 point for the ambience. Conclusion: I will not visit the restaurant again and will not recommend it to others.

This was my second time at Haxenbauer. I highly recommend the knuckle of pork. You can choose from three and get a real treat for your money. The servers are quick and very attentive. Unfortunately, I discovered that not all dishes meet this standard. The meatballs with potato salad both came out of the package (bucket). They didn't even try to spice up the flavor. At €18.90, I don't think that's appropriate.

Admittedly this outlet has the highest level of crunchiness of pork knuckle skin that I ever tried in Munich. The full size knuckle is way too much for one person, the restaurant staff is so kind to advise us to get a full size knuckle to share among 3 pax, and we ordered another German Roast Sausage. Between the cooked pickle cabbage vs the raw version, I personally prefer the salad version which gave a refreshing taste. By the way, we got the reference of this restaurant from u tube blogger… so, this is really good recommendation. Worth a second visit as I really like their polite & courteous service.

They seem to have returned to their original name and roots, Haxnbauer, which is excellent news. After the remodeling, which was too modern and eliminated the traditional charcoal grills, it lost much of its personality. Let's hope that the essence of the usual Haxnbauer has been recovered even if the decoration is not the usual classic.

The pig's feet are really delicious, the pork under the crispy skin is very tender, and beer is a must! The waitress was a cute girl with short hair. Although she didn't speak English, she was very friendly and helped us. We used the photos on the Internet to ask her which dish it was, and she didn't mind and kindly helped us find it. It is very helpful for us foreigners. I think the comments on the Internet should be updated. This place is also suitable for non-German speaking foreigners!

Finally again! After a long break, the Haxenbauer in Munich has reopened. Shortly after it opened at the beginning of February 2025, we visited this restaurant at its new address. The food is still excellent. The knuckles, whether from pork or veal, are excellently prepared. The beer is cold and the atmosphere is nice. Unfortunately the service was a bit slack that evening. The food was at the table long before the drinks. And even when the beer was empty, the waiter kept waiting for him. But that shouldn't detract from the joy. The Haxenbauer is always worth a visit. And the knuckles are really unique.

I was just here for takeaway and had a fantastic Leberkäse (meat loaf). I had a reservation at the restaurant on a Friday evening. The interior and ambiance are very nice, and the service is friendly and fast. The food was delicious, and the prices are reasonable for Munich. I'll definitely be back!

The knuckle roll (€8.50) was disappointing. The roll was tasty and fresh, but there was little, very thinly sliced meat and no crust. Unfortunately, you only taste the salad. I'll never get it again. I loved the one at the old location! 😢

Unfortunately, we weren't impressed with the crispy half pork knuckle: the meat was very dry, the crust was rubbery, the dumpling was tasteless, and the convenience-food sauce was inedible. The horseradish was good... The ambiance was very nice, the service very friendly.

Haxenbauer Munich – top address for Bavarian specialties The Haxenbauer impresses with crispy pork knuckles from the charcoal grill, hearty beer and typical Bavarian cosiness. The rustic ambience and attentive service make the visit perfect. The knuckles in particular are a must - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. The side dishes such as potato salad and sauerkraut are also excellent. Centrally located, ideal for a hearty Munich evening!

The Haxnbauer is back – and better than ever! At the new location, the restaurant continues the tradition of combining modern comfort with hearty delicacies. The ambience is stylishly Bavarian, just the right mix of traditional and modern to feel comfortable. My absolute recommendation: the Haxenbauer duet! The combination of perfectly grilled veal and pork knuckle is simply a dream - crispy on the outside, tender as butter on the inside. This goes well with a freshly tapped Hacker-Pschorr from a wooden barrel, which rounds off the taste experience perfectly. The service is attentive, friendly and ensures that nothing is missing. Knuckle fans shouldn't miss this culinary highlight!

Basically, people are happy about quick service, but with the Haxnbauer it was too fast for us. We had Haxn and Haxnduett. We barely sat down and ordered when the food arrived straight away. On the one hand it was lukewarm and on the other hand we felt very stressed by the speed. So there was no comfort. The potato dumplings were great.

Today I wanted to test the new Haxenbauer... disappointing and completely unreasonable price... there was no Russian, no light wheat beer either. I left the restaurant hungry.. Had a duet of pork and veal knuckle for 27 euros... the portion was outrageously small... I needed a magnifying glass.. Veal knuckle sensationally dry, pork knuckle good but so mini... I really thought it was a disgrace. We had a snack board...without bread...on first request, that's right?? When we asked for a second time how to eat the Obatzen or with what, the waiter kindly brought us pretzels...a lot of money spent, bad feeling...and that in the brand new restaurant...sorry...we won't be back.

Went there spontaneously on Friday evening on the recommendation of the hotel employee, asked kindly at reception if I could reserve a table for one person, timing: immediately. Friendliest smile ever and a great seat in the full restaurant. The service was attentive, friendly and mischievous, the pork knuckle duet was served with extra red cabbage (although they call it red cabbage) and finally a yeast dumpling (THE!!!). Ambience too loud for me personally but stylish. Good choice

Don t go! Waiters are not kind so I decided not to tip. I was questioned on this and I had to answer that I was the customer and that my decision can’t be questioned. By the way, food is far from being healthy and well done and it is not cheap at all and the menu has very few options.

Food to forget! Went there for the second time today to give the place another chance and it was again a complete disaster🤮 Initially, after making a reservation, we were given a table at the back in the last corner of the restaurant. I especially love this when everything is free at the front and they try to fill up the waiter's stations, even if the guests would prefer to sit at the front. We ordered a duet of veal and pork knuckle for a whopping €27. After a very short time, a mini portion appeared on the plate, which even the waiter was embarrassed about. He explained to us that we (!) should please tell the boss that we should put more than 200 g of meat on our plates, as he had already received numerous complaints. The whole thing was described as Gusto pieces on the menu. Congratulations, dear Kuffler Gastronomy, to call a simple piece of pork knuckle a gusto piece and to cut two small slices about 0.8 cm thick from the veal knuckle like a roast is really a real feat. The coleslaw tasted like ready-made food, I'm guessing Kugler. The crowning glory was the gravy, which was quite elongated, tasteless and thickened with Mondamin. I recommend seasoning the minces with pepper, salt, cumin and garlic guys. The quality was below meadow tent level! The audience also spoke without words - a shop clearly positioned to rip off tourists. The service was friendly and tried hard, but obviously not satisfied with the quality of the food. Plus the glossy beers from Hacker. Sorry, but that was simply a complete gastronomic disaster that I will never set foot in again. If you know the old Haxnbauer (of which only the naming rights remain), disappointment is inevitable, and the quality of the restaurant is well below the Haxenbraterei and other Bavarian restaurants in the city center. It's a shame and urgently needs improvement...

Rip off! CAUTION!!! Dir Haxn is great in itself, but the methods used to take money out of your pocket are poor. My friend and I wanted two half knuckles, whereupon the “friendly waitress” recommended that we take a whole one. We didn't think much of it until we looked at the bill later: since the whole pork knuckle comes without any side dishes, they were added to it, which meant that our meal cost 27~ euros per person instead of 22~ euros. No, the pork knuckle wasn't any bigger, the person sitting next to me had a better sample and paid the normal price. To be honest, I feel cheated and that's why I won't go there again, even if the pork chop itself was great!

We were there on March 12, 2025. Were totally disappointed. We know the Haxnbauer from before, the food was great there. Yesterday the room was cold, as was the food....!!!!! The sauce didn't taste like anything!!! Veal knuckle was like boiled roast veal, simply disgusting, and as already mentioned, everything was cold. Service was very nice. We won't go there anymore!!!!!!

The food was bland, the caramalization failed and it literally burnt. I can understand if the new chef wasn't under Alfons supervisor and delivered that, but I saw alfons greeting us - Leading to the question: Is the quality standard in that restaurant so low? C'mon guys, I'd better go to Burger King next time than that.
