Overall, this dining experience was very disappointing. The prices are already quite high, so I was hoping for at least some good service. Unfortunately, the exact opposite was the case. The waiter who served me deliberately wanted to charge me significantly more. I had ordered half a knuckle of pork for €22.90, red cabbage for €5.50, and a Coke for €4.40 – a total of €32.80. However, when I paid, he wanted to charge me €44.80. Only when I immediately asked for the bill did he correct the amount to €32.80 without even apologizing. This kind of behavior is truly unacceptable and leaves a very bad impression. I originally intended to leave a small tip, but after this incident, I just wanted to leave as quickly as possible – without tipping at all.

Going to a "Haxnbauer" as a Munich resident?? No, that's probably only good for tourists. Anyway, two of us ordered half a pork knuckle, with an extra dumpling and potato salad. The knuckle was cold, the dumpling was cold, and the potato salad was meaningless. When I told the waitress "the knuckle was cold," I got a stupid comment followed by "I'll pass it on." Those two sentences were an absolute no-go for me. I'm not going to see the place again. Our knuckle must have been ready long ago and had been "kept warm," and had been for a while, as had the dumplings. A few minutes later, a fresh, warm knuckle was served at another table. Apparently, we were unlucky because we ordered too early. We really should have sent the knuckle back right away. Regarding the beer selection, I missed the non-alcoholic shandy. They have non-alcoholic Helles and Weissbier, but what if you don't like pure beer and prefer non-alcoholic shandy?

I visited this restaurant during Oktoberfest, and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing! Despite how busy it was, the staff took great care of everyone with such kindness and attention — truly an angel amidst all the joyful hustle and bustle! The pork knuckle was out of this world — perfectly crispy on the outside and incredibly tender inside. I have to say, I prefer Munich’s pork knuckle over Berlin’s! Next time, I’m definitely ordering a bigger portion because it was just too good. A special thank-you to the lovely waitress working at the back of the restaurant on September 27 — Danke! 🍻

The pork knuckle is crispy outside and juicy inside, and it is well prepared. The environment is clean and comfortable, and the foods and beers are served quickly.

The food and ambiance were quite good. However, ordering soup as a starter and receiving it after the main course is a very poor organizational approach. The waitress just tells you that it was ordered together. So, as a waitress, you should know that soup is a starter. The friendliness of the waiters at our table of eight was very questionable and unfriendly anyway. When we asked when our ordered drinks would arrive (after about a 30-minute wait), the only response we received was blunt and unfriendly, "It'll come." So you should definitely encourage your staff to be friendly.

Since the Haxnbauer im Tal is a Kuffler restaurant and the legitimate successor to the restaurant in the Scholastikahaus, we went there with guests, expecting the same quality as the previous one. Unfortunately, the knuckle of pork was very fatty. No comparison to the quality of the past and considerably worse than what the current Haxngrill offers. The Kaiserschmarn was also bland and pale. We're used to much better. The service was friendly, but a bit off-key. It was strange that the card payment machine didn't work for us, and we would have had to wait an hour, but the next table worked after 5 minutes with an alternative device. The ambiance of the new restaurant is beautiful and rustic. Based on our recent experience, we're unlikely to return.

The place was spacious, the atmosphere was nice, and the service was friendly and pleasant. We ordered two Schweinshaxe for the table. One was a nice, pretty color, but the other was a bit too brown. I think there are differences between Schweinshaxes. Still, it was delicious. The pretzel was a bit too salty.

Our visit to Haxnbauer with our Thai friends was well-planned. There were six of us and we had clear ideas about the food and the ambiance. We were really looking forward to it, but the service was very unfriendly and completely overwhelmed from the start. Some of our food wasn't brought, and while the food arrived very quickly, drinks were forgotten, and dessert was served only once instead of twice. As a result, our table was largely ignored over the course of the evening because we obviously couldn't compensate for the server's mistakes. Overall, it was a disappointment. The food was actually good, but the service completely ruined it.

The restaurant is typically Bavarian, serving good, home-style cooking. Despite being quite busy, we were served promptly. The staff was friendly and courteous. The wooden benches and chairs are typical for this type of restaurant; it's not the place for a longer stay or a conversation at the table. If you enjoy a good beer with a knuckle of pork in an Oktoberfest atmosphere, this is the place for you.

Unfortunately, the portions here are disproportionately small, especially compared to other Bavarian restaurants in the city. While the food was delicious, no one in our group was even remotely full. If the prices had at least been adjusted accordingly, it might have been acceptable, but that's not the case. The service, however, was very friendly.

Great local grills in Munich,Old Town

I remembered a much more quaint atmosphere, with huge grilled pork shanks in the window. But we're in a new place, more spacious, less overwhelming. The pork shank is good (the pork one), the beer is good. The waiter proved he's a true Bavarian when he brought fourteen liter mugs to our neighbors' table at once. Hats off!!

Good food and service. Quiet atmosphere next to Theresienwiese. Easy to get a table midweek during Oktoberfest. Good walking distance from Marienplatz or good public transport. Good beer, Hacker delivers!

Haxnbauer used to be a decent mid-high class local restaurant which features the best Schweinhaxen, fresh made. Before they cook it, they show you the uncooked raw Schweinhaxen, then grill it freshly. However I am disappointed that this mode has been obsoleted in the new restaurant. Now they don't offer fresh made one upon your order. And it's bad to read the owner of the restaurant replied to a customer that is because the pig was stressed... The arrogance of the owner deserves only 1 star!

Food is still quite good, pushy waiter

The knuckle of pork was really good, tender but crispy. The restaurant was quite loud, but our waitress (with long blonde hair) was super nice and very good in her service.

The pork knuckle at this restaurant came highly recommended by our tour guide, but it was a major letdown. The crusty exterior tasted burnt, the meat was dry, and the gravy lacked any real flavor. Overall, the food was extremely disappointing. To make matters worse, the waiter was rude and impatient. When I expressed my concerns, he ignored me and later became angry when I declined to leave a tip. After reading other reviews with similar experiences, I strongly advise any foreign visitors to avoid this place.

The food and drinks are good, but when you check out... be careful, we were scammed. Our server was a blonde lady who kept rushing us to choose quickly, then tried to push some food, and finally, we were told that a 10% tip was included, but it was 25%. In short, pay attention to your bill.

Too bad the waiter wasn't in the mood this time. It was packed, so yes, waiting is okay, but if he's unfriendly on top of that...

By far the best knuckles I had. Definitely go for pork. Crispy on the outside, soft and juicy inside. Gravy sauce and dumpling was perfect as well.

A restaurant where there's clearly a policy of defrauding guests from other countries. One of the worst experiences I've ever had. The restaurant was recommended to us by a tour guide, and so, on Friday, September 19 2025, seven of us had reservations for 9:00 pm. Once seated, we ordered what seemed to be the local special: seven pork knuckles with french fries, seven 1-liter mugs of beer, and four bottles of water. Finally, seven grappas (schnaps). The waitress who served us was very helpful and flirted, without exaggerating, with a group of seven Italians who just wanted to have some fun and eat well. From a culinary standpoint, the seven pork knuckles were good enough, but not up to our expectations. The worst part was the bill. The mentioned waitress showed us the bill ONLY ON HER PDA, for a total of €400.00, a surprisingly round bill with no decimal points. We were initially a bit shocked by how much was the bill campared to we'd ordered, and when we asked to print the receipt, the waitress told us it would be printed ONLY AFTER PAYMENT. So we paid in cash and left a €20 tip to the waitress for a total of €420.00. However, something didn't add up, and before leaving, we asked for a receipt to be printed. Once we had it, we verified that the resulting bill, based on our purchases, was €343.00. We immediately demanded clarification, to which the same waitress attempted to resolve the issue by refunding us €40. At that point, we became very angry and demanded to speak to the owner, but we were only able to speak to a blond waiter. We felt that he was pretending to understand, but that he was clearly in agreement with the illegal overcharging policy adopted by the waitress at that establishment. Tempers were flaring, and, as we demanded, they refunded us the full difference (including the tip), and we left, threatening to call the police, which probably would have been the right thing to do. Munich is a beautiful and hospitable city, and this made the behavior we experienced inside this restaurant all the more serious and inappropriate. I recommend carefully avoiding places like this, where, beneath a confidential appearance and seemingly attentive service, lies a clear way of defrauding foreign customers.

We were there in September as a trade fair team with reserved tables. The room was extremely loud and far too warm. The staff couldn't keep up with our orders; it seemed unorganized. We were only able to order drinks after 45 minutes, which we would have needed much sooner given the heat. Accordingly, the food arrived another 30 minutes later. It was sometimes chaotic for the staff to allocate orders—plates were often carried around the building until they reached the right table. The food was, well, our team wasn't satisfied.

I ordered only pork knuckle for food. It's very delicious. The skin is so crispy. The sauce is come separately. The price is reasonable. The staff are very nice and polite.

The dishes are mostly hearty, and the portions are generous, even for big eaters. The knuckles are truly delicious and well worth a visit. We remember the Haxnbauer from its old location and have to say, the staff and service are now excellent. We'd love to come back.

Very poor service. We had to wait over 15 minutes for the drinks. Then another 15 for the waitress to come take our food order. After the food we ordered another round of drinks that never came. Our server barely paid us any attention. The food was good but the service sucked! Would not recommend!

We walked in around 6pm on a Monday. It was quiet so we picked an outside table. Our first server was luke warm, he brought us menu & took our drink order. Then another lady came to deliver our drinks and she was more pleasant. Ordering our meals were easy. The salad with graved salmon was a little confusing because we were expecting it to be cooked but it was actually smoked salmon. It was very fresh but not cooked. My half crispy pork knuckle was delicious. I visit Germany a bit and have my fair share of knuckles. This is one of the best with taste and texture. The skin is crispy and chewable, the meat is super juicy and tender. I swapped out the potato dumpling with a side salad and it was crisp and fresh. Also extra order of saurkrut, it complemented the knuckle perfectly. Our server came around after our meals and had a small convo with us while we paid. The place was filled by the time we left (around 8pm) so reservation encouraged if you plan on dining later in the evening

The Haxnbauer was quite busy at 8 p.m. Despite that, we didn't have to wait too long; the service was really friendly and apologized several times when it took a while. The food was good, at least the ham hocks, but my Vegadellen were a bit too heavily seasoned with pepper, which overpowered the actual flavor. We all also thought the portion size was too small for the price. The ambiance, however, was really nice (although it was very noisy due to the busy schedule).

The place isn't really my thing; it's uncomfortable. It was great outside in the sun. The service is really friendly, quick, and cleans up really well. The pork knuckle was divine, and the gröstl pan is also really delicious. So, to finish off, the yeast dumplings...mmmmm

Unfortunately, we had truly terrible service. We sat for 20 minutes before we were even noticed. When we asked if we could have a menu, the response was: "Oh, you want food too." At least we were allowed to order a beer. The beer was carelessly slammed down on the table and we turned around without a word. Another 20 minutes later, the service came again. In the meantime, we had decided not to eat there, especially since the prices are very high compared to other places. Service came, we asked for another beer and the bill. When the beer was being poured, the keg emptied, and they slammed a half-full beer in my face. Then, when I asked, it was completely full. We won't be back.

The staff at this place is very rude, we waited for 45 mins for 2 glasses of beer & the food also that we ordered was not good at all. I’m sorry to say but they are not hospitable, the icing on the cake is when the server asked for a 10% tip.. we paid to avoid any conflict but leaving with a very bad experience

A very successful evening, planned quite spontaneously. Our waiter, Joseph, provided us with professional service with a pleasant dose of humor. Both the schnitzel and the steak were prepared absolutely perfectly! The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, ideal for relaxing. We enjoyed the evening very much and would be happy to return anytime.

I had high expectations for this place and didn't find it all that was advertised. The waiter was impatient (I don't speak German or English). I tried to speak in Spanish, but no one spoke any other language besides their native language and English. Eventually, he relaxed, but he had already made a negative impression.

The food was okay, but nothing you couldn't get at least as good at other restaurants in the area. The prices are on the high side compared to other breweries. The conditions were also rather unfriendly. The good thing was that it wasn't nearly as loud as other breweries, and the atmosphere was otherwise good.

I have tried several times Schweinhaxe in different famous restaurants in Munich, this one for me and my family is no doubt the best! If I visit Munich again in future, definitely come back again. The waitress was very kind and lovely.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on the food, as we weren't served at around 2:45 p.m. on a Monday when it was quiet. The waiter walked past us four times and then started resetting the tables. After 12 minutes, without receiving a menu, we left. You sit outside on the street, so the ambiance isn't exactly great. It's a shame, because the food is supposed to be really good, but we couldn't test it with the service.

Even though we bought takeaway food from the beer garden, the team served us with great friendliness and attentiveness. The food (Haxenleberkäse (ham hock) and Haxensemmel (ham hock sandwich) was absolutely delicious... especially the crispy Schwartl (swallow tail)! Absolutely delicious!

We, Khanittha and Marco, went there for lunch today (Sunday) around 3 p.m. and sat outside in the beer garden (opposite the street vendor). The food was really great and delicious. My girlfriend ate half a knuckle of pork and I had chicken. I highly recommend it! The chicken was juicy and the knuckle crispy. The only thing I have to complain about was the service. It felt like the lady was never at our table! Even though there was nothing going on. I had to ask for my mineral water three times. We would have had more drinks; we wanted a Coke and a cappuccino, but that didn't work out. It was a bit of a shame because the food and atmosphere were really great. Thanks and best regards, Marco

My review is based on street sales. I had one ham hock roll with rind and one ham hock roll. The idea is good in principle, but unfortunately, the meat wasn't even lukewarm in each case. Furthermore, it takes a very long time to prepare.

The shank had a very good crust, but the portion sizes (here, different half shanks) were too uneven, and the larger half shank had a lot of gristle in it. The beers weren't great either, but the service was very fast, friendly, and the atmosphere was great.

Perfect lunch – typically Bavarian and truly delicious! Situated a bit away from the hustle and bustle, Haxnbauer is a real insider tip for a relaxed lunch in Munich. The atmosphere is cozy, and the seating is really nice. The service was excellent – ​​our waitress, in particular, was very friendly and attentive. The food: The pork knuckle was wonderfully crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside – just as it should be. The veal knuckle was tender as butter and cooked to perfection – a real treat! To go with a freshly tapped, well-chilled beer – it doesn't get much better than that. If you're looking for good Bavarian cuisine, this is the place to go.

Very disappointing experience Saw this place on Instagram. I really like pork knuckle after traveling a lot in Germany for over 20 years. On Instagram this place looked very good so I had high expectations, but unfortunately this place was a very big disappointment. The meat in the pork knuckle was dry. I immediately told the waiter and got a new one which was just as dry. It was so disappointing. The side dishes on the plate were very good. so it is so incredibly disappointing that this place can't deliver on what they promote themselves as perfect pork knuckles.

Well, our entire ham hock today was unfortunately quite disappointing. The crust had virtually no popping and was more like (hard) leather. They shouldn't have served something like that; the waiter, and hopefully the chef, saw the ham hock's condition... It's a real shame. We had hoped for more and will probably go somewhere else next time... :/

We quickly stopped in at Haxnbaur for two half-liters, a portion of fries, and a fried curry in a glass. The food was good, but classically geared toward tourists. €30 is a real cheek, but what can I say, it's just Kufler, who's only focused on maximizing profits (understandable to any businessman). You can see this at the wine tent at the Oktoberfest and, more recently, at Sedlmayr. We spend a lot of money each month eating out (often two- or three-star restaurants), but we've found that there are better Bavarian restaurants in Munich's city center that offer good value for money. Just take a look at Stiftl at Marienplatz; they have everything for everyone at really good prices. As an alternative, if you want to eat a really good Haxn, then go to Haxn Grill, also very tasty but price-wise a different ball game. As Munich residents, we tried it and found there are better and cheaper options.

Excelent food.. a bit expensive... but good food..

For dinner after a long day, we originally wanted to experience Hofbrahaus but upon seeing the vibe, we all felt like we had to find another Biergarten. Haxnhauer’s crispy pork knuckle was worth the wait. My stepson ordered their chicken schnitzel and my husband had their spinach balls. Husband really liked his dish, my stepson’s dish didn’t look great and was under seasoned. My pork knuckle was awesome. I’ve been dreaming of it so I was glad that I finally had it. Our server was fantastic (didn’t get her name, sadly). For the price, I consider them reasonable especially after seeing how prices usually go in this part of the world.

The restaurant had good reviews and there were relatively many seats available, so we went without a reservation. The food and service were both good.

My guest really wanted to eat pork knuckle. Even though I'm from Munich, I rarely eat that kind of thing. I was told that the Haxnbauer im Tal is one of the best places in Munich for it. I found it disastrous, and you can tell that this restaurant primarily caters to walk-up customers. Expensive and mediocre, typical Munich standards. I won't be making my next visit here; there are certainly better, smaller restaurants that offer better food at reasonable prices. The waiters and staff are very friendly, and the ambiance is good too. Unfortunately, the food isn't.

Pork knuckle and beer was great 8/10, however… the Bavarian Mac and cheese was awful (3/10) and so was the Bavarian cheese and pretzel starter (3/10). Service was very slow, took about 15-20 minutes to get the attention of a waiter once we were sat down. Food did come quickly though. Atmosphere was very good - just let down by the service (due to a lack of waiters as opposed to staff not working hard) Overall, spent €66 (with a 10% tip) on 3 dishes, 2 glasses of water and 1 beer. I probably wouldn’t come back just because of how sickly the cheese made me feel.

I'm taking away one star because the pork knuckle was smaller than those served at other similar restaurants. I'm taking away another star because the price is 10-15% higher than similar restaurants. I'm taking away two stars because the waiter who served us was slow to take orders and included the tip on the bill. Your job is to ask if I want to give, and my will is to give what I consider, not what you want.

I was amazed by the helpfulness, kindness, and enterprising spirit of the waiters and kitchen staff at HAXNBAUER - Munich. The pork shank they served me for dinner, along with their beer, was a pleasant experience. I had a second helping of the sauce, along with the best pretzel with my second beer. Service is very poor. Negligence to us. We need no spicy food for my kid and suggested Penne Aurora, however, is spicy. No recovery was done. Also, we asked "no fizzy drink" and ordered "Blackcurrant Nectar" but arrived with fizzy. Asked the staff but they said this is what we ordered. Service issue - When we came across question from two items we ordered and raised hand to ask the responsible man to come for assist, the drink man, just see me and ignore me. Then I try to stand up and ask him to come, then he ask me take it easy, but still move away. After I ask again and again, he came with a non-of-his business face and told him we asked "no fizzy drink" and ordered "Blackcurrant Nectar" but the drink we received was fizzy, he then said, "this is the thing we order, this is the thing we ordered", then move away. the food man, I try to reach, after several minutes, he came, and told him, we asked to order no "spicy" food, but the "Penne Aurora" is spicy. he then insist, this should not spicy and move away. finally, someone wear full black came and confirmed the drink we ordered should not fizzy and replaced with another one. while the penne, he promised to replace with another one for us, but finally nothing came. All my children are left with half empty stomach.
