Haxnbauer used to be a decent mid-high class local restaurant which features the best Schweinhaxen, fresh made. Before they cook it, they show you the uncooked raw Schweinhaxen, then grill it freshly. However I am disappointed that this mode has been obsoleted in the new restaurant. Now they don't offer fresh made one upon your order. And it's bad to read the owner of the restaurant replied to a customer that is because the pig was stressed...

Service is very poor. Negligence to us. We need no spicy food for my kid and suggested Penne Aurora, however, is spicy. No recovery was done. Also, we asked "no fizzy drink" and ordered "Blackcurrant Nectar" but arrived with fizzy. Asked the staff but they said this is what we ordered. Service issue - When we came across question from two items we ordered and raised hand to ask the responsible man to come for assist, the drink man, just see me and ignore me. Then I try to stand up and ask him to come, then he ask me take it easy, but still move away. After I ask again and again, he came with a non-of-his business face and told him we asked "no fizzy drink" and ordered "Blackcurrant Nectar" but the drink we received was fizzy, he then said, "this is the thing we order, this is the thing we ordered", then move away. the food man, I try to reach, after several minutes, he came, and told him, we asked to order no "spicy" food, but the "Penne Aurora" is spicy. he then insist, this should not spicy and move away. finally, someone wear full black came and confirmed the drink we ordered should not fizzy and replaced with another one. while the penne, he promised to replace with another one for us, but finally nothing came. When we asked for the bill, we were asked directly if we wanted to tip. Our negative reply was followed by a comment that "that's the only way she makes her money" – and then a rather rude exit from the table. She went back to get the bill, which she threw down on the table without a word. I understand that tips are an important part of income in the restaurant industry, but as a guest, you shouldn't be forced into such a situation. The employer should carefully consider whether such a worker is good for the establishment – I'm happy to identify the lady with the short, slicked-back blonde hair. Today, August 8, 2025, she was wearing a green traditional costume with black shoes. The most unfriendly service with an embarrassing ending.

The crispy pork knuckle had a nice crispy skin, but the pork was incredibly salty. The service was practically non-existent. We couldn't find anyone to order, and even after walking back and forth several times, we were kept waiting. It was crowded, a typical tourist restaurant, but we were there for the food, weren't we? My family and I went to dine there at 4:00 PM, and there were only about three other tables inside. Two white customers who arrived after us were given menus and instructions for the dishes. We sat there for about ten minutes, and no staff member came to offer menus or instructions. When we asked, we were simply told to "get your own menu." I believe this is not a good attitude towards customers, and I strongly suspect racism. From the moment you walk in, the aroma of meat roasting in the wood-fired oven tells you what a treat you're in for. The signature dish, as its name suggests, is the "Haxe" (knuckle), served crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. It's cooked to perfection and served with classic sides like sauerkraut, potato salad, or bread rolls (Semmelknödel). They also offer versions of veal and pork knuckle, and you can order a half portion if you're not feeling very hungry. Everything is beautifully presented and served in generous portions. I've been traveling around Germany for the past month, eating a lot of German food, and even had Schweinshaxe in other places. My first impression of Schweinshaxe was that it was soft on the outside and chewy on the inside. However, this restaurant's Schweinshaxe is not that good. I've seen some YouTubers rave about it, but the feeling I get when I eat it is that it's definitely not that good. If there's anyone who comes here just for Schweinshaxe, I'd like to advise against it. As a side note, the servers are very friendly. The beer is also very good. Great service, great beer, but tasteless Schweinshaxe is my review of this restaurant.

Anyone looking for BAVARIAN cuisine should look elsewhere. The waitress rushes hectically through the aisles, menus are slapped on the wall right next to you, and you can only order another drink after being asked. In my opinion, the food consists of ready-made products – admittedly from well-known manufacturers (Burgis Knödel), but it certainly has nothing to do with our traditional Bavarian cuisine. The knuckle of pork is grilled in-house, but the accompanying sauce doesn't seem to be made from it. The noise level is very loud. Tourists and guests with lower standards will certainly feel at home here. We place more value on good food and a chef who refines each dish with a certain something. Therefore, this was our first and last time here…

A meal to forget! We were there for the second time today to give the restaurant another chance, and it was once again a complete disaster 🤮 Initially, after making a reservation, we were given a table in the back, in the far corner of the restaurant. I especially love it when everything is free at the front and they try to fill the waiters' stations, even if the guests would rather sit up front. We ordered a duet of veal and pork knuckle for a whopping €27. A tiny portion arrived on our plates in no time, which was embarrassing even for the waiter. He explained to us that we (!) should please tell the manager that we should put more than 200g of meat on our plates, as he had apparently already received numerous complaints. The whole thing was described as Gusto pieces on the menu. Congratulations, dear Kuffler Gastronomie! To call a simple piece of pork knuckle a Gusto Stück (a piece of goodness) and to cut two small, approximately 0.8 cm thick slices from the veal knuckle like a roast is truly a feat. The coleslaw tasted like a ready-made product; I'm guessing Kuffler. The crowning glory was the gravy, which was quite long, lacking in flavor, and thickened with Mondamin. I recommend seasoning the knuckles with pepper, salt, caraway, and garlic, guys. The quality was below meadow tent level! The customers were also speechless – a place clearly positioned to rip off tourists. The service was friendly and attentive, but they were obviously not satisfied with the quality of the food themselves. And then there were the lackluster beers from the Hacker. Sorry, but this was simply a complete gastronomic disaster, and I won't be setting foot in it again. If you're familiar with the old Haxnbauer (of which only the naming rights remain), disappointment is inevitable, and the restaurant's quality is significantly lower than the Haxenbraterei and other Bavarian restaurants in the city center. A shame, and in dire need of improvement...

Last Saturday, I was at Haxnbauer in the Old Town with friends – and what can I say? You feel welcome from the very first minute. The restaurant is super centrally located, right between Isartor and Marienplatz – perfect after a stroll through the city. But of course, it's all about the food – and Haxnbauer really delivered here. First-class pork and veal knuckles, marinated for 24 hours in their own spice marinade, and then slowly grilled over beechwood – tender on the inside, crispy on the outside, simply delicious. We had half and half and could hardly decide which was better – both were absolutely delicious. They also came with potato dumplings and red cabbage, all homemade. The service was excellent: prompt, attentive, and with a good sense of humor. They gave us some great recommendations throughout the evening (e.g., a beer recommendation from the small copper barrel of the Hacker-Pschorr brewery in the Salettl). Only the prices are mid-to-upper range for Munich standards (around €25–30 per main course), but definitely justified for the quality, ambiance, and service. In conclusion: If you're looking for really good Hax'n (ham hock) in a traditional, stylish setting—with super friendly staff and a convenient city location—this is the place for you. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. We can't wait to come back!

6/23 (Monday) We ordered a combination of calf's trotter + pig's trotter, and Bavaria's unique white beer. In fact, there is not much difference between calf's trotter and pig's trotter. The meat is ok, but it is a little salty. It is very different from the German pig's trotter that children imagine. It is not crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and there is no sauerkraut. When checking out, the waiter took the initiative to ask: "10% is ok?" The positive reviews must be for the speed of service and atmosphere, both of which are good. The flavour of everything we ate however was completely overpowered by salt. I really like salty foods but this was too much. The other thing that was very disappointing is the ‘special’ service charge which seems to be just for tourists: “I’ll just add 10% shall I?” said our waiter (having already added it) Tipping is not the norm in Germany so this is underhanded. Unfortunately, I can only agree with what some have already criticized. The "gravy" not only looks like a ready-made gravy, it also tastes like one. The potato dumplings were rubbery... I can't say anything about the knuckle, because I didn't order any. But I gave the restaurant another chance and ordered a Swiss sausage salad. According to the menu, it was called Emmental... unfortunately, they used an unidentifiable cheese, which tasted like an imitation cheese... and looked like it, too. Very even stripes, like you'd find in supermarket salads. Besides, Emmental is known to have holes;) I've had much better in other Bavarian restaurants. The food at this restaurant is delightful. We had a half crispy pork knuckle, two meatballs (with potato salad and gravy), and a mixed salad. The pork knuckle was delicious, but the star of the show for me was actually the potato salad that came with the meatballs! When I told the server that I had a peanut and tree nut allergy, she took out a detailed allergen book and searched each dish. She was very kind, welcoming, and helpful. My only comment is that (as other reviews have mentioned) there is no air conditioning, which was very difficult for some in our party as it was 90+ degrees outside. I believe only the restrooms and downstairs area (no seating) has AC. The atmosphere was lively and I had a great time here. We arrived at 5:30pm or so and there were still open tables—after 6pm, it quickly filled up. I would recommend making a reservation in advance or arriving early! Overall, an excellent meal in München.

Unfortunately, the meat in both knuckles was very dry and disappointing in taste – definitely not worth the price. The dumplings and coleslaw were good, but that alone doesn't make up for it. The service was inattentive: We were ignored for a long time, weren't asked for more drinks, and our politely expressed criticism received no response – no comment, no apology. This shouldn't happen in a restaurant of this category. The ambiance was nice, but overall, unfortunately, we wouldn't recommend it. For us, it was our first and last visit.

It was a great experience. Crispy pork knuckles had very crsipy skin, yet tender meat inside. I tried one half beer and one wheat beer. Both of them were great, but half beer went excellent with pork knuckles. I asked for the musturd sauce, which went well with the crispy skin. I want to mention my waiter as well. I forgot to ask for his name, but he, being a foreign student, was very welcoming and warm, explaining all the questions about the food and beer I had. Best service I had in Munich so far. I was often disappointed with the waiter service at famous breweries in Munich, but here, the waiters were very bright and friendly, so I will leave with good memories of Munich. The food was great.

Travelled for the pork knuckle and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Crispy outer shell with a moist flesh on the inside. Each pork knuckle weighed about 1kg each, which would best feed around 3 people. Service was quick and bathroom was clean. Only thing that could improve could be the service. Despite other people’s reviews, we were never offered ‘pork knuckles that we could choose from’, and was just brought a random one to our table. Thus if we would like a smaller pork knuckle, we were unable to choose so. In another review, the restaurant replied to the customer stating that they have waiters that will check in to ensure the food is good and that the quality of the pork knuckle is good and not dry. However not a single waiter checked in on us during our time there, despite us having our meal at 6:30pm where much of the restaurant was still empty. We had to even approach the front desk ourselves (which was empty) to find a waiter to make our payment for our meal Although these are just very minute issues, it would be nice to see that the restaurant lives up to its promise and deliver consistent service to all its customers. Apart from that, I would definitely return to Haxnbauer the next time I’m in Munich!

We got a snack to go today. It was the Haxnbauer Haxnbox. We ended up throwing two-thirds of the box in the trash. The description says "Haxnfetzen" (sliced ​​hax) and "Knödelgröstl" (roasted dumplings). I would have preferred some freshly shredded ham and crispy fried dumpling pieces. Instead, a drawer was opened, revealing squishy, ​​probably warmed-up ham hock meat without any crust. From a second drawer, the equally squishy dumpling slices were taken out. During my trip to Munich, I visited this restaurant after watching a well-known Korean YouTuber's positive review. I was genuinely excited to try a traditional Schweinshaxe here—but sadly, the experience was disappointing. The skin, which should be crispy, was hard and rubbery instead. The meat itself was extremely dry and lacked the rich, juicy flavor one expects from freshly roasted pork knuckle. I even found it difficult to swallow without drinking beer. The overall impression was that the dish had been pre-cooked and reheated, possibly due to low customer turnover. 6 of us went there for dinner at around 7pm on a Saturday evening, the outside sitting area was full but there were still plenty of tables available inside. We ordered a whole Crispy Pork Knuckle with potato dumplings. The waiter showed us 3 knuckles to choose from. 1 whole knuckle weighs about 1kg and it was plenty for sharing. The Mixed Salad was fresh and refreshing. We also ordered the Six Roast Sausages and the Original Kuffler Wiener Schnitzel. Overall food quality is very high. The meal was enjoyable and staff was very nice and friendly. Highly recommended. They also have Veal Knuckle available.

We picked up food here during our lunch break and were immediately pleasantly surprised by the service – very friendly and attentive. The dishes stand out for their individuality, which is definitely a plus. I had a Haxn roll, which I particularly liked: They use typical Bavarian ingredients – authentic and regional. My colleagues also really enjoyed it. For me personally, the meat was unfortunately a bit too fatty. If you like that, you'll definitely be satisfied here – but for my taste, it was a bit too much, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars overall. Still, an interesting concept and a friendly atmosphere!

The Haxenbauer has moved from the Scholastic house to the valley. Unfortunately, the current ambience cannot keep up with the old one, the new furniture cannot decide between Bavarian kitsch (just look at the new logo) and purist canteen flair. Much more important: the knuckle. And it is actually different than before, I would say even better! In the Scholastic house, the knuckle was grilled over wood, so the aroma was particularly special. I don't think that's the case anymore. I think the knuckles are now cooked sous vide because the meat falls off the bone. The crust is bronze in color, sounds like a forest of leaves and is incredibly easy to bite and cut, it appears thin and “eater friendly”. That means: the former robust scholastic house knuckle has become the new, really very fine knuckle in the valley, all served with beautiful plates. I personally like the new version better. I would say I have never tasted such good knuckle, really refined. If you want to eat a great knuckle, you have to go to the Haxnbauer. The only drawback: the industrial potato dumplings and the loud music. If you pay €21.50 for half a knuckle, you can really expect homemade dumplings, and also the option of a bread dumpling. And I don't know how other people handle it, but when I go out to eat I usually have a conversation with the person I'm talking to. There’s no need for music. The city center, which has mutated into a pure shopping mall, is loud and tiring enough anyway. Oh yes, and the waiters do a great job. Anyone who complains here should do a shift themselves. So the knuckle is good, the service is good, the ambience is okay, but the knuckle has priority, hence 5 stars.

We had a perfect table right next to the glass wall that opened onto the sidewalk. The waiter was very friendly and really quick, he had us 10 men completely under control with extensive drink orders. My pork knuckle was excellent, the crust was crisp and easy to cut, and the meat was juicy. The gravy that was served with it was also very good. The ambience is great, a very successful mix of traditional elements (especially the photos) and a newly renovated, modern but stylish interior design. We'll be back!

Haxe was still raw. The two of us ordered a knuckle, which looked very good from the outside, but it was not yet fully cooked and we only noticed this when the pink meat juice was visible on the plate and left the food. When I complained about this to the really nice waitress, the young boss came to the table and said that the knuckle was cooked through and I had to pay for it. I showed him the bloody plate and said that a price like you can't judge what a Bavarian knuckle should normally be like and that he should continue to sell the food to the many Chinese and price people who were in the business because they might not notice or care about something like that. And that I'm happy to pay the bill because I don't want anything from him as a gift. It's OK for drinking beer and maybe a pretzel, but not for eating!

The food was bland, the caramalization failed and it literally burnt. I can understand if the new chef wasn't under Alfons supervisor and delivered that, but I saw alfons greeting us - Leading to the question: Is the quality standard in that restaurant so low?
