Goldener Anker in Freiburg im Breisgau

We were there on the evening of June 21, 2025. The food was truly excellent and delicious. The portions were also absolutely sufficient for everyone. The service, however, was the complete opposite. When we were shown to our table, it literally took 10 minutes for someone to hand us the menus. Everything usually takes a long time. When we ordered another Coke, we were told that someone else would take the order...but it took another 5 minutes for someone else to arrive. We wondered if it was really that difficult for a server to simply write down the Coke for our table and serve us directly. This really took away the charm of this restaurant for us. As a result, we are no longer willing to eat there again. Accordingly, we hardly left any tips.

What the food lacked in salt was reflected in the prices. €4.50 for a large water, €4.50 for a 0.33l non-alcoholic beer. In return, we sat in the idyllic garage entrance. The absolute cheek, however, was that they made us wait over 20 minutes for the bill. Some of us who had already paid then stood around on the sidewalk until the waiter came over. Since I wanted to go and get him in between, it unfortunately became clear why: a private conversation was apparently taking priority.

Very large portions, good and fast service. Too fast for us.

Beautiful location, just outside the old town on the other side of the Dreisam river. We had a reservation and sat outside on the terrace. Super fast service and very friendly, attentive, and simply nice staff. The dishes were excellent: three cordon bleu and one cheese spaetzle, and the steak was simply amazing. The Goldener Anker was an absolute must for us in Freiburg.

A little off the beaten track, which is a good thing. Exceptionally delicious Baden food, large portions at reasonable prices. Friendly service. Set in a garden under chestnut trees, it couldn't be better.

Absolutely recommendable! Five of us went there, and we were all thrilled. The quality of the food, the taste, the quantity, and, last but not least, the super friendly service are something I've rarely experienced! The food was fantastic and the portions were more than generous. It's a cozy restaurant or bar (I mean it with a nice touch) where you feel at home, and the service is very, very prompt.

A cool place with cool and friendly service. The food is generally excellent, but the vegetarian options are very limited, and even when one request is met, the portions are so small compared to the other dishes, it's as if all the vegetarians are low-energy users.

It was okay, but I wasn't entirely sure about the staff. They treated paying customers very strangely. The food was also bad, considering the first page of the menu recommends cordon bleu, and the food itself is absolutely, if not average, mediocre.

We thought we were done with Freiburg: it was cold and the drops were starting to fall. For an Easter Sunday, one might expect it (or not). In any case, we couldn't expect the sun to come out of hiding, and put the main highlight of our Friborg day in our path. At the Gasthaus we had not booked and were with our dog. On top of that, my wife doesn't eat meat. Problems solved: everyone is welcome here! From the moment we were welcomed, we felt at home. A bowl for our dog, a free salad for humans. That’s what we know how to entertain at Goldener Anker. Next comes the order. And what an order! The plates are gargantuan, generous, excellent. The special black forest cordon bleu is to die for. Nothing to do with the motorway cordon bleus that Emmanuel Macron appreciates so much. There, we are on a cordon bleu which means that we call the chef cordon bleu himself. Some will say: “yes, it’s just cordon bleu and spaetzle, you have to calm down”. To these I tell them: it's not "just a cordon bleu", it's THE cordon bleu, the one that we didn't ask for but which is there, as if obvious. So a big thank you to Gasthaus Goldener Anker for this moment. Freiburg is lucky to have you 🖤

Vi fik klassisk tysk schnitzel med bratkartofler og salat til. Schnitzlen var helt i orden - god panering og stadig kød, der var til at få øje på. Salaten var lækker og kartoflerne i top. Store portioner. Vi sad udenfor på den hyggelige terrasse. Venlig og effektiv betjening. Vi er et stykke fra Freiburg mitte, så her er hovedsageligt lokale.

This is such a lovely place. The food is brilliant. I love that the waiter suggested that we had ordered too much (before sending it through). Love that. The Alsacian salad was lovely and the veal schnitzel was superb. The manager goes above and beyond to make sure you are happy. He makes suggestions and did something very kind for us! We highly recommend this place!

Amazing schnitzel and brügele with huge portions! We didn’t make a reservation but we we’re promptly seated while the restaurant was filling up quickly (around 7:30). The staff was also really nice to us (as English speakers) and made sure we enjoyed everything (the salad was also great - really fresh ingredients all around). I can’t recommend this place enough for a filling, traditional German dinner!

Absolute recommendation! The cordon bleu with wild garlic pesto (homemade) was a poem! The fried potatoes, salad and spaetzle were also excellent! Spaetzle and pesto are all homemade here, and you can taste that too. Keep it up!

The food was great. Badish good. The ambience was Wiehre and Badisch appropriate. The service was friendly, but we weren't used to paying 3 euros for an extra cover because the child had to eat with them without their own menu. Especially since it remained on the bill without us using it. This is also possible with others without a fee.

We were looking for a local restaurant while on vacation and did everything right with the Golden Anchor. Small menu but absolutely delicious. We had the Baden Cordon Bleu and the turkey steaks with spaetzle as well as an absolutely delicious apple strudel for dessert.

We ate very good home cooking, excellent value for money. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We'd love to come back.

The food (sauerbraten) was excellent! For a moment I thought I was sitting at the table with my grandma again. If you still want to eat real Baden food, you should definitely come here! Service was also top!

We had a memorably good meal here -- we went because a local person had recommended it to us. Friendly, relaxed, yet professional service made us feel welcome. We had schnitzel and sauerbraten, and the main dishes and all the sides (spaetzle, salad, potatoes) were just great. Beer was excellent as well.

I can't understand how you can miss a schnitzel - I ordered a veal schnitzel and what came was simply a 1.5cm-2cm thick “schnitzel” that was medium-rare in the middle...

No response to email reservation, on site only for football, it was good at the Italian restaurant too.

Very nice little restaurant, nicely decorated, comfy seats. Staff and service was fast and kind. I ordered a large schnitzel and I got a little salad and potatoes with it. Old pictures of the menu are outdated! The prices are a little higher now. The food was good but not mind blowing special.

Tolles Restaurant! Die Bedienung war sehr nett und super lustig, was heutzutage nicht mehr so oft vorkommt, muss man schätzen! 2 Schnitzel und los ging’s. Die Portionen sind groß und der Preis ist klein. Also kann man ohne weiteres fur ein nettes Abendessen ohne Schnickschnack Augen zu hin!

Came here on Saturday 18/01 to watch Freiburg vs Stuttgart (sadly Freiburg lost), but was my birthday and wanted the food... Food, service and atmosphere was perfect and the Venison Goulash was delicious. 100% recommend the food!

Sehr gute, traditionelle badische Küche mit generösen Portionen. Die Stimmung war außerordentlich gut. Das Personal war bei guter Laune und trotz dem vollen Lokal wartete man nicht allzu lange auf die Getränke und das Essen. Sehr faire Preise rundeten unser Erlebnis im Goldenen Anker ab. Fazit: Es ist absolut ein Besuch wert!

What a pleasure! Uncomplicated, fast, big and tasty. Very fair priced. Clear map, but it has everything to offer that a bourgeois sense of taste could hope for. Had the local wheat as well as the schnitzel and cordon bleu with crispy Brägele, tender spaetzle and crunchy lamb's lettuce. And what can I say? Grande! You can experience the heights without having to go to the mountains!

Came for dinner for 4 people. The staff were so nice to us all night. The menu is limited but everything we ordered was veeery tasty in a good portion. We took a salad, cordon bleu, salmon and a steak. So recommended!

The management invited us here as part of a business lunch. Small, cozy inn with extremely friendly staff and an even nicer boss. I had a rump steak with lamb's lettuce. Which was extremely tasty. My colleagues also raved about the schnitzel, sauerbraten and also the game. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to photograph my colleagues' food, but I absolutely recommend it and I'd love to come back with my family. Table reservations are highly recommended, but that in itself says a lot!! Parking is a bit difficult but that is typical for Freiburg.

We felt very, very comfortable here! A great innkeeper, with humor and attentiveness. The food was, as we hoped, home-style, regionally high-quality and, above all, delicious. Ein volles und uriges Lokal. Die Gaststätte war gut besucht, viele reservierte Tische an einem Wochentag sprechen Bände. Nachdem ein Platz gefunden wurde, kam das freundliche Servicepersonal. Das ausgewählte Gericht war lecker und schmackhaft. Der Klassiker scheinen wohl die Schweineschnitzel zu sein. Gerne wieder.

Locale caratteristico e caloroso. Meglio prenotare, si riempie subito. Servizio super cordiale e professionale. Porzioni abbondanti, ma molto abbondanti. Abbiamo ordinato la schnitzel con gli spatzle e un piatto di carne locale, sempre con spatzle. La carne era davvero ottima, saporita e morbida. Compresa nel prezzo una gradita insalata. Consigliatissimo.

This was the tastiest cordon bleu I have ever eaten. I can recommend everyone to try the spicy Anker Cordon Bleu.

Characteristic and warm place. Better to book, it fills up quickly. Super friendly and professional service. Generous portions, but very generous. We ordered the schnitzel with spatzle and a local meat dish, again with spatzle. The meat was really excellent, tasty and soft. A welcome salad is included in the price. Highly recommended.

The two of us had dinner at the golden anchor. Dad Restaurant is rustically furnished and offers traditional Baden cuisine. The portions are generous, the furnishings are functional and the service is friendly. Here you can get absolutely delicious, down-to-earth food at a very good price/performance ratio. We recommend the lamb's lettuce and the Black Forest Cordon Bleu. Definitely make a reservation!

Very friendly staff and good salad, but for us that’s where the good points end. We were both then served raw salmon which we sent back. The second attempt was edible but dried out salmon served with burnt/greasy potatoes. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing as most people seemed to be enjoying schnitzel.

Eaten very, very tasty. Super nice service and a nice boss. Everyone was friendly and always said something nice and the restaurant was packed. Despite all the work, it wasn't hectic for the guest. The team does a very good job. There were 11 of us there and everyone had something great on their plate. Everyone was more than satisfied and completely full. Cozy corner of this restaurant. If you want to eat a good home-style meal at a good price/performance, this is a great place for you.
