The “house-made” gravy tastes the same in every restaurant

Was here twice. On Mondays with Lucy and Anna as waitresses. Was great. Really awesome. On Tuesdays with some woke snot with blue fingernails who didn't check anything. So depending on the operation day or night. Otherwise really recommended...

The Essighaus in Heidelberg impresses with excellent cuisine and a well-stocked selection of drinks. The food is delicious and the portions are generous, so the price-performance ratio is absolutely right. A special highlight is the beer garden: cozy ambience and beautifully planted in the quiet inner courtyard, it is the ideal place to spend a relaxing evening. Unfortunately, the positive overall picture is clouded by the sometimes poor service. The service is often inattentive and slow, which detracts from the enjoyment of an otherwise lovely evening. Orders sometimes take longer than expected and the friendliness of the staff could also be improved. Despite the service that could be improved, the Essighaus remains worth recommending thanks to the excellent food, good prices and charming beer garden. If the service is raised to the level of the rest, it would be a real gem in Heidelberg.

Really nice and rustic and one of the few restaurants with typical, home-style dishes in Heidelberg and the surrounding area. Well attended, reservations are recommended. 100% worth it.

The schnitzels were good but the service was forgettable. You are used to Italy where hospitality is at home, but not in this place. Hurrying waitresses, not very attentive. We had placed ourselves in the beautiful courtyard. We had to go inside because it was full of wasps outside, among other things with two little girls... and the waitress advised me to use copper coins to ward off the dangerous insects. In the end I decide to bring everything into the room inside. Some waitress would have helped me. I had to do 5-6 laps to carry everything. I repeat, good food but service like this makes you go hungry. But I've noticed it's a widespread thing in the city

The best is the 200/400 g steak with onions! I never actually go out for a home-style meal, but I drag all my friends to the vinegar house. I also celebrated my 16 & 17 birthdays there a few years ago because the steak is just too wild 🤝🏽

Excellent dishes, excellent service and excellent environment. We could only pay in cash, I don't know if it's a rule or a temporary eventuality. We had a great time.

Beer garden looks okay but nothing special. Service was nice but the sluggishness was hard to beat - there were six of us and after the first dish was brought it took a solid 20 minutes until we all got our food. By the way, the starter salads only came after we had already finished the main course. Soup of the day has undercut the ready-made soups from Maggi and Knorr. Schnitzel and fried potatoes were okay. Lettuce was not fresh and set new standards of dryness. Gladly not again!

Habe gestern den schlechtesten Service seit langem erlebt. Lange auf Karte und Getränke gewartet. Beim Servieren ist die Suppe vom Tablet gerutscht und 2 Personen hatten die komplette Suppe auf dem Rücken, den Jacken, Handtaschen und Stühlen. Auf die Entschuldigung des Kellners warten wir noch. Oder das nächste Getränk geht für ihre Unannehmlichkeit aufs Haus. Nichts. Als wir von der Säuberungsaktion wieder an den Platz kammen, waren die Linsen notdürftig zusammen gekehrt. Es war rutschig. Teller wurden, bis zum Gehen, nicht abgeräumt. Die verschüttete Suppe wurde nach dem Hauptgericht nachgereicht. Als falsch gebrachte Getränke (diese Größe nicht bestellt) zurück gegeben wurden, kam nicht, kommt gleich, sondern ein unzufriedenes Ahhh. Auf das Essen haben wir kaum noch geachtet. Der Service war so schlecht, er hat alles überlagert. Es waren 2 verschiedene Servicekräfte.

Cheese spaetzle is not recommended (Emmental and Gouda), unfortunately no mountain cheese. The steak is super class. Pasta with garlic and basil is also very tasty. Big portion. Only the prices are exaggerated. Spaghetti Bolognese 16€. Card payment is also not possible (no-go).

Excellent food! Hearty and good. However, the fact that the environment was very outdated and stuffy was bad. But the worst thing is that they don't tell you that they don't accept cards. Normally places that don't accept cards notify you in advance.

Catastrophe. We waited 20 minutes for the first drink and a whopping 90 minutes for brawn with fried potatoes. Never again!

We reserved a table and arrived on time. The staff however was not present so we sat ourselves. 15 minutes later we got menues.... Another 10 to order. After another 30!! We asked after our food and were told that it would take another 30 minutes. We got up and left. Do Not enter, unless you really don't mind waiting 90 minutes for your food.

It was a good address for us for many years, but not anymore the last few times. Our specific criticisms from last night (last time for now): one of the two salads had brown-colored leaves that didn't smell good; One schnitzel was still raw in parts (went back); the wine spritzer (Riesling; rosé not available) didn't taste good and smelled bad (we didn't recognize the wine bottle). The fried potatoes are more like boiled potatoes with lots of onions, but that's a matter of taste. It has also become expensive; or price and quality no longer match. A pity.

The food in the Essighaus was again flawless, the service was very friendly and tried to implement the guests' wishes. The portions are gigantic and the price-performance ratio is right, so if you create good portions, you've come to the right place. I was there for the second time with my friends from the Swabian Alb because they are always thrilled. Thank you for your commitment, keep it up.

The food is very good, meets my expectations. The homemade iced tea is delicious, as is the lentil soup, meatloaf with a fried egg and a small salad. The furnishings are a bit old-fashioned but ok. The service was friendly and quick. However, card payment is not possible, “unexpectedly” in 2024. I find the tile images particularly interesting. All in all highly recommended.

Rustic, cozy inn in the heart of Heidelberg. Here you feel comfortable, receive friendly service and can enjoy German cuisine at a very good price-performance ratio. Almost every main course was served with a starter soup, in our case a clear vegetable broth with noodles. It was tasty but unfortunately not quite as hot - it's a shame, the taste was great. The salad was freshly served with a delicious yogurt dressing and with homemade raw vegetable salads such as carrot, cabbage and red cabbage salad. The main courses were very, very tasty. The sauerbraten with hand-scraped spaetzle is a dream. The Cordon Bleu is also highly recommended with a delicious gravy. The 400g rump steak with fabulous crispy fried onions was very good. Why there is no 5 star because the soup was only lukewarm and the service was unfortunately a bit inattentive

Fangen wir mit dem guten an. Der Service war freundlich. Das war es aber auch schon. Derselbe leider total überlastet. Die Tagessuppe, halt bei jedem Gericht dabei, erinnerte an die Kantine beim letzten Reha Aufenthalt. Sorry, die Kantine war deutlich besser. Die Hauptgerichte, bei 8 Personen sehr unterschiedlich. Mein Schnitzel vielleicht noch das Beste, mit sehr viel Wohlwollen ein Befriedigend. Alles andere eher ausreichend bis mangelhaft. Die Krönung war scheinbar die Spaghetti mit einem UNGENÜGEND. Soweit mit den Schulnoten:-) Unser Urteil: Der erste Abend in Heidelberg hätte kulinarisch nicht viel schlechter ausfallen können. Das Positive: Es kann nur besser werden...

Very nice restaurant with nice service. Christiane served us very professionally and to our complete satisfaction. The home-style cuisine is open longer than some restaurants in the area. That's why you can eat quite well even at 9 p.m. The soup of the day was very tasty, but the main courses were also generous and delicious. Seasonal dishes - such as asparagus - are also offered. The prices are quite OK. You're almost in the old town. We would be happy to come back when we are in beautiful Heidelberg again.

It was one of my favorite bars when I was a teenager. It has remained rustic and down-to-earth. Not the uniform and interchangeable tourist monotony...

A great beer garden with charm. Unfortunately, the staff was completely overwhelmed that day. 20 minutes waiting time for the drinks. After about an hour the food arrived (but it was announced in advance), unfortunately only plate by plate. The first two were long finished when the last plate finally arrived. A salad was missing, the hollondaise sauce was cold. We probably won't come back.

The service was subpar. 3 waitresses for the beer garden, forever waiting, no smile, no friendliness. Guests had to get cards and cutlery themselves. My large salad with turkey strips took forever and ended up being a miserable mishmash of mismatched parts: beetroot, arugula, potato salad, iceberg lettuce with yoghurt dressing, oversalted mushrooms with fried onions and pepperoni and olives. All different dressings. Zero attention from service. Never again. It's a shame because the beer garden is nice.

A really honest, great and good “traditional restaurant”. Far away from the tourist trap, you can find Heidelberg locals enjoying typical home cooking. During peak times it takes a little longer, but the guest is informed of this BEFORE ordering. Everyone can decide for themselves whether they would like to bridge the waiting time with beer, wine or other drinks. We go there often and every visit was GREAT! The starter, main course and salad are offered at reasonable prices. Definitely a recommendation!

At the beginning of the month I came up with the idea of ​​showing German cuisine to a foreign friend here. After all, the reviews are good 🤪. I can't understand that in retrospect. Many people write in the comments that this restaurant is ancient and one of the best in Heidelberg. That is absolutely no longer true today, I'm sorry. The food was expensive and mediocre at best (16€ for definitely not homemade spaetzle?), the cheese spaetzle tasted practically like nothing and the side salad was okay, just straight out of the box, like most people. Unfortunately, the service was unfriendly and served us almost reluctantly, not even bringing a smile to our faces. The only good thing was the one glass of wine we had. But let's be honest: you can't objectively call this a good place if the only thing that was good was the drink! I wouldn't come here to eat again, I was very disappointed.

Wonderful, rustic restaurant with home-style cuisine at reasonable prices. I had liver "Berlin style" with homemade mashed potatoes and it was very good! Tender well cooked liver!!! My friend's veal schnitzel was also great.

Unfortunately, you really have to wait a long time, well over an hour, for the food. The drinks also took over 30 minutes to reach the table. After the starter, the main course plates were simply squeezed between the empty plates. Nothing was cleared away. The food was OK to bad. Unfortunately, beer isn't really tasty either. The kitchen seemed overwhelmed and unfortunately so did the service staff. Some of the food at other tables was also returned and people asked how long it would take. Very unfortunate

Great food with an authentic atmosphere!

This is a truly hidden gem in Heidelberg. If you are looking for something that is not busy and packed with tourists, this is for you. Amazing sausages and exceptional wiener snichel. I undoubtedly recommend it if you are looking for something more traditional.

Wir kommen immer wieder gerne hierher und freuen uns jetzt schon auf den gemütlichen Biergarten wenn es wärmer wird :-) Mein Rumpsteak war wieder sehr lecker und ich liebe das hausgemachte Salatdressing.

You can sit wonderfully in the beer garden. I think this is very nicely designed. There are very different seating options; a barrel, a bench, garden tables. We have never discovered any unfriendliness among the staff. But sometimes you have to wait longer or shorter for the food. Depending on the crowd. We also think it's great that many dishes come with soup beforehand. We find the prices tend to be cheap for the region. We like to go there.

Unfortunately, we all had the feeling that we were being trafficked through here and that the table should be freed up for the next guests as quickly as possible. Soup, then the salad and then the main course. The salad was good. The sauce from the sauerbraten had a burnt aroma, but unfortunately the pork medallions were not recognizable as such. Mixed, fried (???) and the sauce and spaetzle are not a delight. The service employee was very friendly. Maybe you should consider simply halving the very extensive menu and placing more emphasis on quality. And please think about whether this timing really has to be the case or whether you get around with guests who can enjoy their food in a timely manner, stay seated a little longer and drink a few rounds at the same time.

I know the vinegar house from the time I lived in Heidelberg. The special thing is that you can eat decently there for relatively little money. Today I love this restaurant because the food is still good and cheap, but served by super nice and nice people. Even though I only go once or twice a year, I am always warmly welcomed. Bei meinem Besuch im Essighaus kann ich das Essen als durchschnittlich bewerten. Es erfüllte seinen Zweck, jedoch fehlte es an besonderen Geschmackserlebnissen oder kulinarischer Raffinesse. Die Bedienung war angemessen und erfüllte ihre Aufgaben ohne besondere Auffälligkeiten. Insgesamt war die Erfahrung zufriedenstellend, jedoch ohne herausragende Highlights.

Gute Hausmannskost. Hier wird noch selbst gekocht. Leider aber auch das "vegetarische Schnitzel" in Form von zwei schwerlich zu genießenden Bremsklötze (wie wärs mit einfachen Sellerieschnitzeln). Gulasch war dafür mit der Soße sensationell. Der Schankraum erscheint in OP Atmosphäre mit der Beleuchtung aber der Nebenraum hat angenehmes Ambiente. Nette Bedienung die mit dem Begriff Gastfreundschaft noch vertraut ist.

Also "gute deutsche bürgerliche Küche" würde ich das jetzt nicht nennen. Es hat erstaunlich lange gedauert, bis wir unsere Getränke hatten, obwohl nicht sonderlich viel los war. Die Portionen waren eher klein. Das Schnitzel war in Ordnung, die Pommes aber etwas matschig. Doch die Käsespätzle waren eine Katastrophe. So eine geschmackslose Pampe habe ich schon lange nicht mehr gegessen. Dafür war der Vorspeisensalat und die Suppe echt lecker. Die Freude auf den Hauptgang war nur leider schnell vorbei. Die Auswahl an Vegetarische Speisen ist hier nicht wirklich vorhanden, aber das hätte ich jetzt auch nicht anders erwartet. Das Ambiente ist sehr einfach und rustikal gehalten. Es hätte schon etwas gemütlicher sein können. Aber es gibt scheinbar einen Außenbereich, der ist im Sommer sicher schön.

Wie immer, sehr ursprünglich und urgemütlich bei bezahlbaren Preisen

Das Bier schmeckt fürchterlich, bloß nicht trinken wenn man Biertrinker ist. Die Kartoffelsuppe war leider nur warm und schmeckte nicht nach Kartoffeln. Der Wasserhahn im Männerklo ist so lose das jeder Angst haben muss sofort nass zu werden. Das Essen war sonst soweit gut.

Essen schmackhaft, Portionen von denen man gut satt wird, Preise angemessen.

Regionale Kost und diese nach meiner Meinung sehr günstig Preis. Das Lokal ist sehr ursprünglich eingerichtet aber das hat auch seinen Flair. Auch deswegen komme ich, wenn ich in Heidelberg bin, immer wieder gerne mal hier her. Besonders Lecker ist da die Leber Berliner Art.

Das Essen war am ganzen Tisch trocken. Selbst das vegetarische Schnitzel war nicht saftig. Der Service war freundlich aber sehr verplant. Die Preisleistung kann nicht mit der Konkurrenz mithalten.

Wer lecker Essen gehen will, sollte ins Essighaus. Gute Portionen zu moderaten Preisen. Der Sauerbraten ist ein Gedicht.

Gemütliches Ambiente, nicht laut, man kann in Ruhe essen und danach auch noch verweilen. Wir waren mit einer größeren Gruppe da - aber bitte vorher reservieren. Interessante Speisekarte, unter anderem auch Thüringer Spezialitäten. Absolut empfehlenswert

Essen war ok, jedoch mehr Masse als Klasse. Bedienung war bemüht aber nur "reserviert freundlich". Nur Barzahlung möglich. Ambiente ist urig gemütlich.

Leckeres Essen und preiswertes zudem. Das mit sehr nettem Service in Ruhe im Hinterhof echt top! Absolut empfehlenswert!

Wir waren hier das erste Mal. Es war Stadtfest und somit war es auch sehr voll. Wir würden freundlich darauf hin gewiesen, dass es eine gute Stunde dauern könne, bis die Bestellung ankommt. Das fand ich äußerst fair, man hätte den Gast auch einfach dumm sterben lassen können. Das Essen beinhaltet wohl generell eine Suppe sowie einen Beilagensalat. Alles hat hervorragend geschmeckt und das Preis Leistungsverhältnis ist absolut gegeben. Auch das dort ausgeschänkte Bier ist sehr lecker. Wir kommen gerne wieder wenn wir in Heidelberg sind.

Leider lange Wartezeit. Hat sich aber gelohnt.

Super gutes Essen, alles frisch gekocht. Direkt dreimal hintereinander dort gewesen mit 8 Personen (23 Gericht) und alle waren sehr begeistert!!!
