Caramba Especial in Hamburg

A delicious Portuguese restaurant in Hamburg's Portuguese quarter. We've been here several times, and it's always excellent. The food is simply delicious, and the service is fast and very courteous. Live music and a good wine make this a pleasant place to be. You can help yourself to schnapps at the bar, and it's included in the price. We'll be happy to come back and are already looking forward to our next visit.

If you go to this restaurant, you have to take your time. We were there in the evening. Nevertheless, it's a very good and delicious place. We would definitely go again.

A perfect evening!! Super delicious, the flaming prawns as a starter were not only spectacular, but also incredibly tasty! The main course with three kinds of fish, vegetables, and potatoes…very, very fine! In between, a shot of schnapps of your choice was on the house…and to finish, the sinfully delicious chocolate tart with a liquid center…unbeatable at absolutely fair prices! Exceptionally friendly and very friendly service! A must-visit and enjoy!

70€ for vegetables that's not worth it. No taste, No variety, simply eat whatever they gave you without asking any question and on top of that, pay your bill.

Super delicious food, attentive and friendly service, and good entertainment. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and will remember it for a long time. The only downside is the rather high prices, but you know that beforehand.

Well, this is a really entertaining restaurant!!🥳 You have to like the atmosphere and be prepared for it. But otherwise, I can only recommend it!! The food, from starters to dessert, was simply fantastic!! Everything was delicious and, above all, there was plenty of it!! To help you digest, there's free schnapps from the self-service schnapps corner!!🤪 I can only recommend that everyone check it out!!

It was a truly perfect evening. The waiters were super attentive and provided a fantastic atmosphere. As he said, "la familia," and that's exactly how we felt. The food was amazing. I'll be back, that's for sure. Thank you so much for this special, wonderful evening.

I recently ate here. Very good food, very friendly staff, and very pleasant service. I'm not sure if there's a menu, but they offered a serving suggestion and then served the food. What you don't really notice are the prices. So be prepared for a somewhat more expensive menu.

A simple but highly effective concept. Great food, great service. This is gastronomy in action.

In my opinion, the restaurant is a typical tourist trap. There was no menu, and we were recommended a set menu. Apparently, there's only ONE menu (a choice of meat or fish). The starter was okay (with a lot of fuss), the main course was so-so (three fish fillets), and the dessert was okay... Two spritzers and a bottle of water, and we spent about €150. It was incredibly loud. The atmosphere was like a restaurant from the 70s. No one spoke Portuguese. And the food was even worse. Never again!

No longer recommended! We've been to Caramba 6 times in the last 10 years... as tourists - every time we were in Hamburg. We used to love it. This time we were very disappointed. Food was okay, pricey, but ... We wanted to leave a €10 tip... the waiter just said, "We'll add it directly to the bill," and ended up adding a €37 (!) tip - without our consent. What a disgrace! We've recommended the restaurant to others many times over the past 10 years, but today was our last visit forever. Never again!

The ambiance and the setting for the evening are truly outstanding. The service is good, very friendly, and fast. The food is okay, tasty, but you shouldn't expect too much. It's always a lovely evening there with friends.

Nicht mehr empfehlenswert! Wir waren mittlerweile In den letzten 10 Jahren 6x im Caramba… als Touristen - jedes Mal wenn wir in Hamburg waren. Wir hatten es früher geliebt. Diesmal waren wir sehr enttäuscht. Essen okay, Preis gehoben, aber … Wir wollten 10€ Trinkgeld geben… der Kellner sagte dann nur“ das buchen wir direkt auf die Rechnung“ und haben schlussendlich 37€ (!) Trinkgeld abgerechnet - ohne dass wir es wollten. Eine Frechheit! In den vergangenen 10 Jahren haben wir das Restaurant schon oft andere m empfohlen, das war heute unser letzter Besuch für immer. Nie wieder!

The price is absolutely justified. There's no menu. Everything is discussed at the table. The kitchen is open to view, as is the counter where you can choose your food.

We went to the musical in the afternoon and then went to the Portuguese Quarter for dinner. Reservations? No way. After asking, we were warmly welcomed and had a fantastic evening! We felt very welcome, and the food, ambiance, and service were great! That's assuming you opt for a three- or four-course meal. We really enjoyed it! A great concept. The food was amazing! The service was exceptional: you could stock up on shots on the large wall! We were happy to take advantage of this and tried lots of new things. Thanks for the wonderful evening!

Like last year, we were there again this year on the occasion of my birthday. Excellent service, very good food and a shot from the “living room” on the house every now and then. :-) We had the 3 course menu and the women were taken into consideration. They chose fish for the main course and were intimidated by the huge portion. It was offered to bring the smaller intermediate course instead of the main course. This was also taken into account in the bill, which is not a given. Big praise for that. We'd love to come back.

Das Caramba Especial ist für uns ein festes Ziel, wenn wir nach Hamburg reisen. Ich kann es sowohl für geschäftliche oder private Aufenthalte empfehlen. Top zubereitetes Essen, hoch qualitative Lebensmittel und ein super Entertainment. Nichts für Pfennigfuchser oder Nörgler. Man muss und kann sich drauf einlassen. Es wird gegessen was auf den Tisch kommt! Wer damit nichts anfangen kann bleibt besser zu Hause oder geht in den Keller lachen. Wir hatten zusätzlich zu dem super Personal in Küche und in der Bedienung noch einen genialen Gitarristen und Sänger, der sowohl die anderen Gäste und auch uns super unterhalten hat. Bis zum nächsten Mal!

The icing on the cake was the live music, which wonderfully accompanied the evening. It was atmospheric but never overpowering – just the right mix to make the food and atmosphere even more special. The service was also excellent: attentive, friendly and pleasantly reserved. The atmosphere is stylish and cozy, you immediately feel welcome. There are very few fresh fish to be seen in the fish corner, the fish fillets are already pre-cut and pickled (pickled for how long...?). The head waiter didn't ask me what cooking time I preferred for my meat, the meat was too cooked for me and had to be grilled again, but the meat wasn't very tender..... otherwise overall OK. For this quality the price is not justified...

Actually everything is already written... Great restaurant, actually experience gastronomy with occasional small shows and live music. No classic menu, but menus depending on your preference of fish or meat and then 3 or 4 courses depending on your appetite. Not cheap, but you don't do it every day either.

During our last visits to Hamburg, we always spent an evening in the restaurant. Very tasty food and great entertainment.

An all-round successful evening at Carambs Especial! The quality of the ingredients was fresh and each dish was prepared with great care. We particularly liked the multi-course menu with bread and olives, herb butter and aioli, followed by flambéed prawns, a selection of fish, a meat course and a dessert plate - all at a fair price of around 60 euros per person. The atmosphere was lively and sociable - if you're looking for a quiet environment, this might not be the right place for you. Live music with guitar created a pleasant atmosphere, entertaining but not intrusive. The service was consistently friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Particularly positive: not a tourist trap, but an authentic restaurant with great attention to detail. Clear recommendation – we would love to come back!

Die Begrüßung ist freundlich. Als wir eine Speisekarte wünschen wird es aber schon schwierig. Die gibt es nicht. Nach Begutachtung der Auslage in der offenen Küche wird klar, hier verlässt man sich auf den Gastronomen und bekommt ein Menü serviert. Unsere kleine Gruppe möchte am Sonntagabend aber kein Menü sondern kleinere Portionen bestellen. Man zeigt sich bemüht und wir bekommen was wir wünschen. Das Ambiente des Restaurants ist spanisch- das essen nicht. Wir sind nach der vom Kellner versprochen Einzigartigkeit der Speisen enttäuscht. Das Caramba kommt dann bei der Rechnung. 5 Gambas als Vorspeise 2 Stückchen Thunfisch, Gemüse, Kartoffeln EUR 35,00 Das Preis- Leistungsverhältnis stimmt absolut nicht. Unklar bleibt auch bei Nachfrage wie der Preis zustande kommt. Leider keine Weiterempfehlung.

Feeding the predators It's a shame, it wasn't the first time we were here, but yesterday evening was not given for the price. We were not asked which dish we would like, but was served fish straight away and then the larger course menu. The second bottle of wine, which we had ordered by calling out to the waiter, was delivered casually as he was holding glasses in his hand for the neighboring table. Everything happened quickly and noticeably the waiters had lost track of things. The one table next to us came later, but they were already on the second menu while we were still waiting for our drinks. The other table next to us came shortly after us, but the delivery there wasn't professional either. The first person already had their food and the other three had to wait a while until they also got their food. Service, 2 stars, food 3 stars (meat was no longer reddish…and the fish died a second time). We would have liked to drink something more, but since no one came, we went to the checkout. It's really nice that you can help yourself at the bar for short drinks, but they only serve the simplest booze there. You don't expect the most expensive drinks, but at least well-known ones. For the final price of €340 I expect more.

It's actually really good, but the service was really bad this time. The waiter wanted to force a tip of €10 per person on us for a bill of €72 per person and then became rather unfriendly. If he hadn't done that, everyone would certainly have given more. I hope you communicate this to the team again.

Came today at 10 p.m. and still received nice and friendly service. Full marks for that!

Class 4 course menu. Great animation by the first-class staff. Whether when greeting you personally, when ordering or when serving the individual courses, the staff radiates warmth and joy. The individual courses were great and served effectively. What is particularly special here is the flambéed shrimps in garlic oil, as well as the presentation of the "white halibut" before preparation. The staff is very attentive and fulfills almost every wish. Another highlight is the bar, where guests are invited after the main courses. The prices for the 4-course menu and the drinks are reasonable.

A real fireworks display and an absolute experience to have dinner here. The service is exorbitantly good, super friendly and very amusing. The food is great and the atmosphere is just great. It's worth taking the menu here and simply being surprised.

Non-transparent concept! At the table we were then told there was no menu (which is very strange) The waiter told us that there were only 3 or 4 course menus, which was OK in itself, but in my opinion a little transparency would be appropriate here. Something like a small card between which options you can choose (with stored prices). There was no wine list either, when asked the waiter said: "I'll just bring you a bottle and you'll see how much you can manage..." (Very manipulative!) All in all, despite the lack of transparency and despite the manipulative nature, I can say that the food was very good (especially the fish). There was also live music. This restaurant visit was definitely an experience.

A wonderful restaurant with delicious food and really good and attentive staff. There is no menu for choosing a meal, but no wish is left unfulfilled. Alternatives are available for food intolerances and allergies. The musicians play wonderful accompanying music. Being there to eat is nice.

The food was excellent, plentiful and expertly served. In between there was a schnapps on the house and you were also invited to choose a liqueur/schnapps from the bar. Wir buchten schon vor einigen Wochen einen Tisch für 5 Personen (4 Erwachsene und eine 13 jährige). Wir waren am 31.12 dort. Auf der Homepage oder im lokal war von Sylvester Menü nichts erwähnt! Unser Plan war das drei Gänge Menü. Der Tipp kam von Freunden soweit so gut. Als wir dann um kurz vor sieben ankamen wurden wir freundlich begrüßt. Wir erhielten unseren Tisch. Anschließend trat jemand an den Tisch und sagte schön das sie mit uns reinfeiern wollen! Wir waren etwas verwundert und fragten was er meine. Heute wäre hier das Sylvester Menü mit Party und frei trinken. Als wir nach dem Preis fragten waren wir überrascht 179€. Grundsätzlich ok aber nicht wenn man das so nicht will bzw. wusste uns in dem Moment einfach zu viel. Wir sagten dann das wir das nicht gebucht haben und auch keine Info darüber hatten. Er sagte dann das ab 20 Uhr hier die Tische alle reserviert sind (wir hatten übrigens eine Reservierungsbestätigung per Mail für 19 Uhr) er sagte dann ok dann mache ich euch ein Angebot ihr bekommt ein zwei Gänge Menü für 69€ müsst aber um 19:45 gehen. Da wir wussten das es schwer wird Sylvesterabend in Hamburg irgendwo einen Tisch zu bekommen haben wir gesagt das es ok ist. Allerdings wurden wir auch so behandelt alles schnell schnell so waren wir um 19:50 fertig mit essen. Komischer Weise haben wir an vielen Tischen das gleiche Spiel mitbekommen. Wir haben uns auch mit Tischnachbarn unterhalten auch hier wusste keiner etwas von einem sylvestermenü. Hier war das Vorgehen ähnlich. Dann kam jemand der Kellner und sagte wir sollen uns keinen Stress machen. Am Ende wurden dann um 21:15 Freundlich mit der Rechnung aus dem Restaurant geworfen. Achso das Essen war gut. Der Rest war unverschämt. Ein nicht so schöner Abend für 400€!!

On the Google review it said dishes starting at 20 euros - and they said there was no menu, only 3 or 5 course menus?! At the end we saw the result on the bill. - We felt ripped off…….

Top service, very tasty food and beautiful location

There is no menu, which is not mentioned on the website and online reservation. You can only choose between a 3 or 4 course menu, but these were not described either. If we hadn't been there on the holiday and had time restrictions, we would have left. The taste of the food was okay, but overpriced at €59 for a 3-course meal.

I don’t know where to start. Since the moment that we came inside, the whole vibe of the place was weird in a way I cannot describe. We get sited and then get told there is no menu to look at whatsoever so we just need to trust that this guy serving us is not making up the prices(more about the prices later), we picked the 3 course meal. The guy serving us was very nice and over the top, which I guess it’s not a bad thing. The first part of the course arrive and to our bad surprise this was a shared plate between all of us, which then makes me wonder why I’m paying so much just to share 3 shrimps. We then got asked for either fish or meat, this was probably the highlight of the whole meal where the meat was good and tasted nice, but sadly that’s all the complements I can give this place. We then had to wait close to 1 hour to get our dessert, just to be surprised with a “looks cool” plate that is cheap and boring (see the pictures). Sadly this was not the worse part, when the check came and we found out that the whole experience was 70€ for the 3 course meal I was stunned. Shared appetiser, ok main and cheap dessert for 70€ insane scam. I saw another review from last year paying 45.50€ for this same course and he felt scammed, so imagine how I felt. I’m sorry but the whole experience does not grant that cost, avoid if possible at this prices, not worth your money at all. Into all of that I also forgot to mention that mid dinner people trying to take pictures of you came in and then someone giving roses, like the ones you see in the street, completely ridiculous atmosphere it brings, showing it’s completely a tourist trap in my opinion,

The food was top notch and plainly put truely amazing. Even things I normally dislike where prepared in a way that I found enjoyable. The amount of food made sure noone was leaving hungry. The staff was super friendly and even played live music the whole atmosphere was great. This is a place I can only recommend.

But very friendly service staff, a very tasty surprise menu and also a bit of a tourist program. We found it really funny, had fun and it was very tasty. If you want some peace and quiet, you've come to the wrong place. We laugh, drink and toast together. The liquor wall is the icing on the cake. You can just walk there and pour yourself something. The meat is on display in the meat counter and you can see the chefs working. The only point of criticism: the toilets could do with a refresh. There was also a strong smell when you went to the toilet.

Unfortunately a bit much show, no menu and the same food for everyone with a little extra charge! The food and fish was very good and fresh!

The fish dishes were great. The presentation of the fish was good but we especially loved the garlic prawns. The fun part of the restaurant is that after your meal, the chef invites you to the bar and offers you the liquor you want.

Absolutely recommended! I would say that it is the best Portuguese in Hamburg if not Germany. Food 10/10 Service 10/10 Ambiance 10/10 We were there with 12 people and everyone was extremely satisfied. Three courses were ordered in different variations with fish and meat as tender as butter and vegetarian! We took our time between courses so we could talk and laugh a lot. You also have the opportunity to help yourself to all the schnapps on a huge wooden shelf! A surprise awaited me as the birthday child. The whole restaurant (everyone present) sang Happy Birthday. I was also supposed to blow out candles and make a wish. The boss also came up with the idea that each of my guests could say a few words to me. In total it took about 4 hours on site! At the end I was given a bottle of wine. We'll definitely be back soon! Thank you very much for the great evening.

I've eaten in an incredible number of restaurants, but never as good as in Caramba Especial! From the starter, to the intermediate course, to the main course and the dessert, everything was a huge taste experience. The small shots that you were allowed to take from the fully stocked liquor shelf were a great idea to make room in your stomach for the next course. What ultimately made the evening perfect was the entire staff, who friendly and offered us excellent service, even with live music. If you've never been here, you've missed the evening of your life. A huge thank you to the Caramba Especial!

We were at Caramba with a very large group, with four of us eating vegetarian. However, the 3-course menus on offer are clearly aimed at meat and fish eaters. All courses on offer are priced the same, but the quality of the vegetarian alternatives leaves a lot to be desired. The others were offered various meat or fish variants with potatoes and vegetables as a side dish for their main course. We got tortellini with spinach and ricotta filling, which looked and tasted like any Aldi version (or other discounter product). Only the waiters and the owner of the Caramba were able to help overcome this misery with their positive mood and friendly manner. Alternatively, you could of course get so drunk with the free (included) shots that you don't care what you eat.

We had the 4-course menu. The dishes all tasted excellent. I found the fish fillet particularly good for my taste. The service was good and the staff was very nice. We'd love to come back. Carambaaa!

When we wanted the menu, the waiter just said 'I am the menu' and when we asked again we were told that there was a 3-course menu and a 5-course menu. Because of his very domineering demeanor, we felt pressured to take one without knowing the price. When I went to the bathroom, I asked another waiter about the price of the three-course meal. A whopping €55! My budget was €30 per person. including drinks. Because we were afraid to backtrack, we ended up with €316 for 5 people and all my birthday money was gone as quickly as it came.

We don't come from Hamburg and didn't know what to expect. We don't have this concept "without" a menu and I have to say - it was absolutely amazing! It was almost exciting to see what delicious things were being served. The food was an absolute A! Super tasty from starter to dessert. The ambience makes you feel good and the service is also great. The 2 hour drive was definitely worth it! CARAMBA ♡
