Alte Herrlichkeit in Monschau

It was schnitzel day on Monday. When we arrived, we were only given a schnitzel menu, even though there was a menu with other dishes hanging outside. So we both ordered a schnitzel. After 5 minutes, it was served. It came with a small portion of fries, no mayonnaise, and no vegetables. So, a regular piece of meat with a small portion of fries. Way too expensive for what we got, as we weren't really satisfied. We saw other tables being served different dishes. I didn't find them very friendly. 30 minutes after arriving, we had finished eating and went back to our apartment.

We'd love to give more stars! We celebrated our wedding here and were absolutely thrilled. The food was outstanding, the service was consistently friendly and attentive, and all of our guests felt very comfortable. Communication was also warm and uncomplicated at all times. The food was OK. However, after 45 minutes, we were asked if we wanted the bill, just so the table could be cleared quickly. Creating a cozy atmosphere isn't easy.

The food was good for the price, but it arrived very quickly and we had to order right away. Playing a game or having a drink wasn't an option. The staff didn't really seem to be in the mood today.

A waitress asked me into the restaurant and explained to me what was no longer available at 7 p.m. Another waitress then asked me to leave because there were apparently no more seats available 🙃

We were ignored when we entered the restaurant. Then we weren't allowed to sit at the free table we would have preferred: "The schnitzel tastes the same everywhere." One schnitzel wasn't cooked all the way through, and parts were raw.

We visited the restaurant on a Monday/schnitzel day, and it was a real hit! We got a lovely table by the window on the river side and received very courteous service! We opted for the "Schnitzel Alte Herrlichkeit" (Old Glory Schnitzel) and were very happy with our choice! The meat was juicy and tender, topped with ham and tomatoes, very tasty!

A thoroughly good and well-deserved 4 stars. My review is based on Monday's schnitzel day. Very small selection on Mondays. But the schnitzels are made with real meat and are tasty. The service is sometimes more, sometimes less cordial, but friendly nonetheless. You can make schnitzel. The side dishes are sparse. The woman will be full, the man not quite, but it's enough for lunch 😉

We had a lovely time on the terrace here on Monday, first enjoying drinks and then... We had schnitzels (on Mondays, schnitzels are €15.50), but it's a shame you have to order the salad separately.

Totally fine. We've been there twice for dinner in the last few days. It's nice to sit outside, the food is down-to-earth but tasty, and the prices are reasonable. Just don't forget that the restaurant is located right in the heart of the touristy town of Monschau. Service is always friendly and attentive. The food was ridiculously overpriced for what you got. Small portions, little flavor, but prices were like those at a high-end restaurant. Definitely not good value for money.

Looking ahead, I have to say that, judging by the rating on Google Maps, this establishment is very underrated and should have more stars! That is why I am giving it a slightly higher score, hoping that the minor shortcomings will be fixed by the next visit. 😉 After visiting, we all had very pleasant impressions, which does not happen often! 👍🫶🏻 Unlike most other establishments in this town, there were seats here, the food was not over already at 4-5 pm, although a large number of establishments start working around 4 pm! The staff greeted us politely, kindly found us a comfortable table and served us very quickly and efficiently. The waiters were happy to answer questions and give recommendations on the menu. The interior of the establishment is old, very pleasant and matches the general charm of the town of Monschau. Some tables are located in the part that overhangs the river and has a beautiful view. The establishment is clean, cozy and there are no unpleasant odors, including in the toilet, which, unfortunately, does not happen often and is very difficult to get used to. All dishes were delicious, ✅I especially liked the signature schnitzel, I recommend it❕Moreover, unlike other well-known establishments in this town, the dishes are not dry and have many ingredients that complement it. 🍺 By the way, there is also beer from this area. ➖Of the minuses that were noticed, this is the so-called "tea kettle", which costs € 4 for tea from a bag (clearly something cheap) and a kettle the size of one small cup, which was not a pleasant surprise. As they say: "a spoonful of tar". ➖The flies that did not give rest, constantly flew there and sat on food and drinks were also very disturbing. I am sure that these two aspects can be easily fixed by purchasing quality tea, a large teapot and removing insects so as not to spoil the overall impression of the visitors of the establishment. 💡As for flies, there are electric options, and you can also use the old candlesticks above the table, under which a container for liquids hangs 🪔, where you can add substances that are safe for visitors and will remove insects. ℹ️ From additional recommendations to the owner/manager of the establishment, please add a menu in other languages (i.e. duplicate below or offer foreign-language menus to visitors). I repeat once again that with the exception of the last two aspects, everything was very good and I 💯 can recommend this establishment to you for visiting! 👍

Friendly service. But they forgot the cutlery, and the food was prepared suspiciously quickly. The fries could definitely use a bit more. Our plates were then cleared away, but after waiting fifteen minutes, we left; apparently, they don't want to make any money.

Mondays are schnitzel day. While many restaurants are closed on Mondays, we were able to spontaneously enjoy a delicious schnitzel at this former glory. Despite being fully booked, the service was always friendly and prompt. We'd love to go back!

Trout stuffed with Mediterranean herbs, fried potatoes in their skins—all fresh and the service friendly and polite. Thanks to the tip from the daughter of Restaurant Hassel, which unfortunately requires advance reservations. Don't understand why it only gave us 3.7. We'd love to come back.

Very unfriendly staff especially the waitress

Today, my wife and our two dogs and I had a "very good" meal on the terrace of the "Alte Herrlichkeit" restaurant in romantic Monschau. A bit away from the hustle and bustle, we were served "very good." The menu was small but "very good." The service was "very good" and attentive. Our dogs were offered water, and it was a "very good" and wonderful dining experience for us... Yes, there were many "very good" dishes... but it was simply "very good." We would love to come back. My husband is currently hiking the Eifelsteig and asked me to write a review. His knee is giving him trouble, and he received excellent care and advice on doctors and accommodations. The food and drinks were very good, and my husband also really enjoyed the atmosphere, he told me. But what he liked best about the hike was the staff's great helpfulness. 👍 It couldn't be better! My wife and I are on our way home after a three-week vacation in France. We've experienced and enjoyed many delicious cuisines, but this "Alte Herlichkeit" is top-notch. The service is attentive and polite, and the food is delicious. Thank you for the wonderful, short break. Jörg

A thoroughly enjoyable end to a beautiful day. A small menu with local dishes and drinks that you can't find everywhere, lovingly prepared and very tasty. The waiters are always friendly and attentive, know the menu, and can offer good recommendations. It's not so bad to wait an extra minute or two for your order due to a lack of staff. The lovingly decorated ambiance makes you feel completely at home in this old-world splendor. A little tip: reserve a table yourself and arrive early.

In a tourist destination, it's very difficult to please everyone. Not every day is the same. It's true for everyone. There were four of us dining together. We found the food to be consistently delicious and lovingly prepared. It was a pleasure to eat. The entire staff was consistently friendly and accommodating. Today I ate the worst schnitzel ever. It looks like a frozen fillet was put in warm water to defrost, then breaded and fried. Frying is fine for a schnitzel but that was the only thing that was right. It also had no taste at all. Only served with fried potatoes. No garnish, salad or mayonnaise (which was not offered either). I ordered a second beer but that was not served either. Quickly paid and left.

Nice restaurant, and simple but fine menu. But the best here is the terrace, which juts out over the water! I don't think you will find many places that will match this ambiance.

For my birthday, the best wife of all wanted to take me to the "Alte Herrlichkeit" in Monschau. So, as a precaution, she made a reservation for Whitsunday by email, which was confirmed by email, but unfortunately, it was forgotten in the reservation book. We still got a good table with a great view of the Rur. Other guests, unfortunately, didn't fare so well. Here, too, the reservation wasn't accepted, and complaints about poor seating for these guests were ignored, so the guests left. Discussions the staff had about it afterward were dismissed with "It doesn't matter." Which annoyed me. I was equally annoyed that the steak I wanted was unfortunately "out of stock." On Whitsunday at 6 p.m., with a fairly limited menu, the first item was already sold out. I consider that highly unprofessional. The dishes chosen were good, but far from magnificent. All in all, a tourist restaurant in a tourist hotspot.

We wanted to grab something to eat there in the afternoon after a walk. I have to say, there were four of us and a small dachshund. When we entered, we were immediately asked hysterically if we had any children with us because she had seen a stroller!!!!! We said that the stroller was for the older dachshund. That apparently wasn't a good idea either, so we stopped the discussion and left. The customer service at the Alte Herrlichkeit is absolutely terrible.

We were there on Schnitzel Monday, and that was the only menu they had. The place was packed and busy, so we assumed it would be delicious. The menu, as well as the door, stated that EC payments weren't accepted until today. Since it was also indicated on the menu and printed, I assume it wasn't a problem on that day, but rather a general scam to avoid tax evasion. This scam is common in Monschau. However, there are also many shops that will accept EC card payments in 2025, including in Monschau. So it's possible. The food came very quickly, and when we tried it, we realized why: it was all frozen. On the way out, I saw the manager's shopping list, and it even said "buy frozen schnitzel" at that stand. The schnitzel was tasteless, and the fries weren't cooked all the way through. It was very hectic and stressful there. The staff were still trying hard, and the manager seemed to have a tight grip on the reins, and of course, she was the one who collected the money. I hope the tips are shared among the staff and the kitchen.

A place not to visit. Low quality of food and rude unprofessional male waiter who even refused to change the bowl of my burning soup so that I would be able to start eating it perhaps after .....20 minutes.

The worst Schinitzeltag that I have ever tied in Germany! The meat is not fresh and plein of taste, and the fried crumbles are soaking, not crispy. It tasted just like using microwave to heat up the one bought from supermarket.Here is even no salt and pepper on the table. I think this restaurant should closed because it doesn't have any merits of food. By the way, all the beer are not fresh, they took it from the bottle and pour it into the big glass.

It took us a very long time to even be shown to the table and then we waited a whole 41 minutes to NOT get a drink. The arrogant waiter ignored us very “charmingly” so we left. Here you don't think much of service and friendliness! Nice view but there are other nice restaurants where you're better off giving your money and getting served!

Why there are people who rate this restaurant poorly, I have no idea. Probably unrealistic expectations. The food, staff and atmosphere are simply good. "Not reserved? Then there is no room!" I was called back on the street: there was room after all. I was hesitant because of the bad reviews, but an eggplant dish seemed very appealing. I was ignored by everyone for ten minutes, then I went to eat elsewhere.

Stopped there on a bike tour with 5 people, only had drinks, €20. Quite unfriendly waitress, that's how we felt. Card payment only from €30. Nowhere is there any reference to this outdated regulation…. Not really recommended.

I wish I could go with zero star. We ordered steak and it was unbelievably bad. Steak was cold and the topping sauce was clearly from day(s) ago. Waiter doesn’t ask how do you want your steak so if you don’t say anything, most likely you will get a medium rare steak. When I told him about the bad quality of the steak he checked to see if I finished the food or not and when he saw it’s indeed barely touched he apologised and offered a “free espresso”, which I refused. But we still had to pay for that abomination called “steak”. It was my second visit. last year’s visit was okay(different staff) but unfortunately never will happen again.

Wat een vreselijke ervaring was dit!! Het voorgerecht werd op tafel gesmeten zodat de glazen bijna van tafel vlogen. Gastheer was zeer onvriendelijk. Er was nog niet uitgeruimd of het hoofdgerecht was er en drinken zijn we zelf maar gaan halen want kregen maar geen oogcontact met de bediening. Verder was hun trots van het huis….schnitzel met kaas tomaat en volgens hun heerlijke saus niet te eten en waren ze de groentes vergeten. Wij zijn normaal nooit mensen die slechte reviews geven maar dit was zo belabberd dat we dit niemand gunnen.

We're from Dortmund and this is our first time in Monschau. We chose your restaurant based on the menu, and it was the right decision. We didn't have a reservation and were lucky to get a table. Wij wilden hier gisteravond een hapje eten maar toen de ober uit de keuken kwam en zijn vingers aflikte om vervolgens het restaurant in te lopen zijn we direct vertrokken.

The food was OK, it came after ten minutes, but then nothing happened.... After an hour we were noticed again, but the service was extremely unfriendly and the waiter was an absolute no-go. We then thought...maybe it's...hidden camera and took it with humor. Definitely never going here again

Today we stopped in to have a cozy and enjoyable meal. Everything was super good and the service was very friendly. Despite the busy house, we were served quickly and the food was excellent. Gladly again.

Food was actually good but as a solo traveller the male waiter was extremely rude and ignorant to me. I was seated at a table of 6. I asked to sit by the window as pictured it's open. He said no. There is no reservation on the tables. He let a couple that asked to be moved there sit there during my time. He wouldn't take any of my plates or check in on me but was extremely attentive to the other customers. So I decided just to get the cheque and get dinner somewhere that wasn't rude to solo travellers.

A cozy environment was rounded off by friendly staff and delicious food. I would come here again at any time.

Raw was the theme of the day. The medium rare round steak was a raw stew and the apple strudel was also raw and cold inside. We approached servers about this, but they hardly responded. Mainly walked away quickly and did not show up again. When paying, too much had been charged and the waitress again acted as if her nose was bleeding. Better go somewhere else.

We were there on January 18, 2025. A very nice restaurant that invites you to linger. Unfortunately the service is very bad. We waited an hour for our food and at -8° the heating was switched off. The radio was also quite loud. One of the guests complained that it was quite cold and that they had turned on the heating. Unfortunately, the host was of little interest in this. We thought that was a shame because the restaurant is really nice.

Food: average, unfortunately the advertised “wonderful sauce” could not be found. You would expect more from this attribute. Service: completely overwhelmed, had to wait 25 minutes just for the card with moderate activity. Although an apology was made, it still doesn't work. It's a shame because the name and location led us to expect more. We won't come here a second time.

Child-unfriendly and cheeky staff! Despite the empty restaurant, you can only sit with a stroller in the dark places and not at the window (even though we offered to put the stroller aside and take the little one on our lap, nothing could be done). Incredibly rude. We were urgently looking for a toilet for our 3 year old child, which of course we also wanted to pay for. Unfortunately we were shown the door and refused to use the toilet. How can you be so unfriendly to children?

We wanted to visit the restaurant. A waiter was putting up the decorations in front of the door. He said it wouldn't open for another 15 minutes. And closed the door. While we were waiting, we first went to a candy store, about half an hour had passed and we continued to wait in front of the door. The staff could see us waiting. The door stayed closed. I then called the restaurant and asked when they would open. The lady on the phone then said yes later and whether I had reserved. I said no. Then she said nothing would work, they had been fully booked for weeks. Then we went to another restaurant. On the way back the glory was opened. A look through the window showed many seats were unoccupied. I felt, in good German, that the staff and probably the owner were being taken for a ride. Because they initially had to wait outside for 15 minutes and then they could enter. And after 30 minutes the door was still closed. When I called it said reservations only and later when I looked through the window there were hardly any tables occupied. They could see us waiting outside and the lady also overheard the conversation with the waiter and us. He said we'll open Strange People there in 15 minutes!

Unfortunately, this restaurant did not meet our expectations. We were there on December 21st, 2024, expecting to end a pleasant visit to the Christmas market with a nice dinner here. Unfortunately, the waitresses seemed very haphazard and unfriendly as soon as they entered the restaurant. We were very hungry because of that, but we decided to stay anyway. Our order was taken quite quickly and the drinks were brought to the table quickly. Unfortunately we waited quite a long time for our food, we ordered cheese spaetzle, venison goulash, duck and schnitzel with mushroom sauce. After about 30 minutes the food finally arrived and to our surprise it was only lukewarm. The taste wasn't convincing either, everything tasted warmed up and bland. The cheese spaetzle only tasted like cream, the schnitzel like old fat and the rest of the dishes were very tasteless and seemed like ready-made food. The service was catastrophic, very slow, rude and disorganized. During our visit there were often arguments between the staff and between staff and guests. Overall, we advise against this restaurant.

We were in the restaurant yesterday and were deeply shocked. We arrived in the pouring rain and initially stood in the entrance, the staff walked past us several times and ignored us. At some point after a few minutes we were asked whether we would like to eat or drink, drinking would probably not be possible, eating would be ok. We told them we wanted to eat there and were given a table. This was still dirty from other guests and was then cleaned in front of us, but only after I said that I would like to sit down. They then said in a mushy tone “not at the dirty table”. The staff discussed and argued in front of the staff, walked around confused and compared the same bill 100 times because there were constant complaints. Food was ordered... well what can you say, I've never eaten so badly. Everything tasted warmed up and not fresh at all. There were four of us at the restaurant and we were all very disappointed. Abdominal pain is inevitable there. Absolutely not recommended. Ah yes, the staff is very rude and repeatedly addressed guests with a rude tone. A visitor then opened his mouth and loudly said, “Speak to me in a decent tone.” Really, save yourself the money and your nerves. Go easy on your stomach.

Very nice restaurant with a great view. Food was delicious. But the service could still be improved a lot. a lot of idle time. Calls and waves were ignored. We had to wait a long time for drinks and no one checked to see if we needed anything else.

Worst service. We were welcome in the restaurant until we brought in a buggy for the baby. We told them we could fold it but we didn’t get a table. People that came later than us got a table immediately. Never coming here again

Schlechte Erfahrung!!! Wir kommen seit fast 20 Jahren hierher und der enorme Mangel an Service überrascht uns immer mehr. Zuerst schauen sie uns fast aus der Tür und reden uns unhöflich an als wir sagten, dass wir reserviert hatten: "das werden wir mal sehen“. Sie machten uns dafür verantwortlich, dass wir um 19:30 Uhr kamen. Sie bestanden darauf, dass wir um 19.00 Uhr eine Reservierung hatten. Die vereinbarte Zeit, 19.30 Uhr war jedoch zweimal von einer in Monschau lebenden Freundin in Monschau bestätigt. Dann wurde die Speisekarte aufgrund der geschäftigen Weihnachtszeit vereinfacht und stand nicht einmal mehr ein Steak auf der Speisekarte und auch kein Dessert (Eis). Allerdings wollen sie nicht verstehen, dass Touristen in dieser Weihnachtszeit das Abendessen genießen möchten. Der Besitzer/Koch und das Personal sitzen am Tisch und trinken und sagen nicht einmal Guten Tag, als wir gehen. Nie wieder „Alte Herrlichkeit“.

We and other tables want to order something but the staff served one table and went straight back to the kitchen. Could be improved. Old glory schnitzel was very good, but unfortunately the second order could only be placed after waiting about 20 minutes.

We were there for a family celebration with 18 people. We were immediately taken by the atmosphere, as was the extremely friendly and courteous service, which always had a smile and didn't allow itself to be disturbed by questions. Although the restaurant was very full, our orders were taken quickly and brought to the table surprisingly quickly. That was simply very good! The food was plentiful and everyone enjoyed it very much. In addition to the menu, which is actually not very extensive, there were a few additional dishes such as game goulash, sauerbraten or delicious vegetarian dumplings. All in all, it was an absolutely successful evening in a wonderful environment and excellent service. A recommendation from us!

I reserved a table in the restaurant for our company outing and can only say it was simply wonderful. The ambience is quiet, noble and slightly rustic. The staff and service were very polite and accommodating. The food was simply outstanding. There were 16 of us there and not one of them had anything to complain about with their food. Personally, with every dish that was brought, I was always annoyed that I didn't take this one. 😃 We were also very surprised at the prices. For this quality of food, ambience and service, we were all expecting a much higher bill than we received. This restaurant is definitely a clear recommendation.

Terrible experience. The starter plates were still on the table and had only just finished when the main course was served. When we paid the bill of €92 and we gave €100 in cash, we did not get our change back without explicitly saying that they could keep it. When we went to ask for the change back, the manager thought this was very strange and rolled his eyes. If the service had been better we would certainly have tipped, but definitely not anymore in this way. We will never come here again.
