Alte Herrlichkeit in Monschau

Very delicious. We ate and drank there twice in one day. It was warm, so we only sat outside. Inside, however, it looks very cozy, lovingly decorated, in keeping with the building and the location. They have treats you can't find everywhere. The drinks are also amazing. The staff is incredibly friendly. It would definitely be my regular if I lived there. Thanks again...

A place not to visit. Low quality of food and rude unprofessional male waiter who even refused to change the bowl of my burning soup so that I would be able to start eating it perhaps after .....20 minutes.

Despite the somewhat 'brown café' atmosphere inside, the food was excellent and the service friendly. No children's menus.

Chicken meat stinks, vegetables quite good with something other than cheap Chinese souse. 22€! - Kebab simply tastes better!

The worst Schinitzeltag that I have ever tied in Germany! The meat is not fresh and plein of taste, and the fried crumbles are soaking, not crispy. It tasted just like using microwave to heat up the one bought from supermarket.Here is even no salt and pepper on the table. I think this restaurant should closed because it doesn't have any merits of food. By the way, all the beer are not fresh, they took it from the bottle and pour it into the big glass.

It took us a very long time to even be shown to the table and then we waited a whole 41 minutes to NOT get a drink. The arrogant waiter ignored us very “charmingly” so we left. Here you don't think much of service and friendliness! Nice view but there are other nice restaurants where you're better off giving your money and getting served!

Why there are people who rate this restaurant poorly, I have no idea. Probably unrealistic expectations. The food, staff and atmosphere are simply good. Friendly waiter, nice cozy interior, excellent schnitzel and delicious truffle mayonnaise. Oh yes, not unimportant; the beer here is also very tasty 😉

"Not reserved? Then there is no room!" I was called back on the street: there was room after all. I was hesitant because of the bad reviews, but an eggplant dish seemed very appealing. I was ignored by everyone for ten minutes, then I went to eat elsewhere.

Stopped there on a bike tour with 5 people, only had drinks, €20. Quite unfriendly waitress, that's how we felt. Card payment only from €30. Nowhere is there any reference to this outdated regulation…. Not really recommended.

I wish I could go with zero star. We ordered steak and it was unbelievably bad. Steak was cold and the topping sauce was clearly from day(s) ago. Waiter doesn’t ask how do you want your steak so if you don’t say anything, most likely you will get a medium rare steak. When I told him about the bad quality of the steak he checked to see if I finished the food or not and when he saw it’s indeed barely touched he apologised and offered a “free espresso”, which I refused. But we still had to pay for that abomination called “steak”. It was my second visit. last year’s visit was okay(different staff) but unfortunately never will happen again.

Wat een vreselijke ervaring was dit!! Het voorgerecht werd op tafel gesmeten zodat de glazen bijna van tafel vlogen. Gastheer was zeer onvriendelijk. Er was nog niet uitgeruimd of het hoofdgerecht was er en drinken zijn we zelf maar gaan halen want kregen maar geen oogcontact met de bediening. Verder was hun trots van het huis….schnitzel met kaas tomaat en volgens hun heerlijke saus niet te eten en waren ze de groentes vergeten. Wij zijn normaal nooit mensen die slechte reviews geven maar dit was zo belabberd dat we dit niemand gunnen.

We're from Dortmund and this is our first time in Monschau. We chose your restaurant based on the menu, and it was the right decision. We didn't have a reservation and were lucky to get a table. Wij wilden hier gisteravond een hapje eten maar toen de ober uit de keuken kwam en zijn vingers aflikte om vervolgens het restaurant in te lopen zijn we direct vertrokken.

The food was OK, it came after ten minutes, but then nothing happened.... After an hour we were noticed again, but the service was extremely unfriendly and the waiter was an absolute no-go. We then thought...maybe it's...hidden camera and took it with humor. Definitely never going here again

Today we stopped in to have a cozy and enjoyable meal. Everything was super good and the service was very friendly. Despite the busy house, we were served quickly and the food was excellent. Gladly again.

The food was way too overpriced, it wasn't true and it didn't taste good either

Food was actually good but as a solo traveller the male waiter was extremely rude and ignorant to me. I was seated at a table of 6. I asked to sit by the window as pictured it's open. He said no. There is no reservation on the tables. He let a couple that asked to be moved there sit there during my time. He wouldn't take any of my plates or check in on me but was extremely attentive to the other customers. So I decided just to get the cheque and get dinner somewhere that wasn't rude to solo travellers.

A cozy environment was rounded off by friendly staff and delicious food. I would come here again at any time.

Raw was the theme of the day. The medium rare round steak was a raw stew and the apple strudel was also raw and cold inside. We approached servers about this, but they hardly responded. Mainly walked away quickly and did not show up again. When paying, too much had been charged and the waitress again acted as if her nose was bleeding. Better go somewhere else.

We were there on January 18, 2025. A very nice restaurant that invites you to linger. Unfortunately the service is very bad. We waited an hour for our food and at -8° the heating was switched off. The radio was also quite loud. One of the guests complained that it was quite cold and that they had turned on the heating. Unfortunately, the host was of little interest in this. We thought that was a shame because the restaurant is really nice.

Food: average, unfortunately the advertised “wonderful sauce” could not be found. You would expect more from this attribute. Service: completely overwhelmed, had to wait 25 minutes just for the card with moderate activity. Although an apology was made, it still doesn't work. It's a shame because the name and location led us to expect more. We won't come here a second time.

Child-unfriendly and cheeky staff! Despite the empty restaurant, you can only sit with a stroller in the dark places and not at the window (even though we offered to put the stroller aside and take the little one on our lap, nothing could be done). We left straight away, luckily when I look at the rest of the reviews..

Incredibly rude. We were urgently looking for a toilet for our 3 year old child, which of course we also wanted to pay for. Unfortunately we were shown the door and refused to use the toilet. How can you be so unfriendly to children?

We wanted to visit the restaurant. A waiter was putting up the decorations in front of the door. He said it wouldn't open for another 15 minutes. And closed the door. While we were waiting, we first went to a candy store, about half an hour had passed and we continued to wait in front of the door. The staff could see us waiting. The door stayed closed. I then called the restaurant and asked when they would open. The lady on the phone then said yes later and whether I had reserved. I said no. Then she said nothing would work, they had been fully booked for weeks. Then we went to another restaurant. On the way back the glory was opened. A look through the window showed many seats were unoccupied. I felt, in good German, that the staff and probably the owner were being taken for a ride. Because they initially had to wait outside for 15 minutes and then they could enter. And after 30 minutes the door was still closed. When I called it said reservations only and later when I looked through the window there were hardly any tables occupied. They could see us waiting outside and the lady also overheard the conversation with the waiter and us. He said we'll open Strange People there in 15 minutes!

Unfortunately, this restaurant did not meet our expectations. We were there on December 21st, 2024, expecting to end a pleasant visit to the Christmas market with a nice dinner here. Unfortunately, the waitresses seemed very haphazard and unfriendly as soon as they entered the restaurant. We were very hungry because of that, but we decided to stay anyway. Our order was taken quite quickly and the drinks were brought to the table quickly. Unfortunately we waited quite a long time for our food, we ordered cheese spaetzle, venison goulash, duck and schnitzel with mushroom sauce. After about 30 minutes the food finally arrived and to our surprise it was only lukewarm. The taste wasn't convincing either, everything tasted warmed up and bland. The cheese spaetzle only tasted like cream, the schnitzel like old fat and the rest of the dishes were very tasteless and seemed like ready-made food. The service was catastrophic, very slow, rude and disorganized. During our visit there were often arguments between the staff and between staff and guests. Overall, we advise against this restaurant.

We were in the restaurant yesterday and were deeply shocked. We arrived in the pouring rain and initially stood in the entrance, the staff walked past us several times and ignored us. At some point after a few minutes we were asked whether we would like to eat or drink, drinking would probably not be possible, eating would be ok. We told them we wanted to eat there and were given a table. This was still dirty from other guests and was then cleaned in front of us, but only after I said that I would like to sit down. They then said in a mushy tone “not at the dirty table”. The staff discussed and argued in front of the staff, walked around confused and compared the same bill 100 times because there were constant complaints. Food was ordered... well what can you say, I've never eaten so badly. Everything tasted warmed up and not fresh at all. There were four of us at the restaurant and we were all very disappointed. Abdominal pain is inevitable there. Absolutely not recommended. Ah yes, the staff is very rude and repeatedly addressed guests with a rude tone. A visitor then opened his mouth and loudly said, “Speak to me in a decent tone.” Really, save yourself the money and your nerves. Go easy on your stomach.

You can eat there. But what poor service. After dessert? A very strange answer. The Irish coffee, a real mockery and not drinkable. If you indicate this, she won't do anything. Not recommended

Fantastic shop in Monschau, I've visited it several times and will probably continue to do so in the future.

Very nice restaurant with a great view. Food was delicious. But the service could still be improved a lot. a lot of idle time. Calls and waves were ignored. We had to wait a long time for drinks and no one checked to see if we needed anything else.

Worst service. We were welcome in the restaurant until we brought in a buggy for the baby. We told them we could fold it but we didn’t get a table. People that came later than us got a table immediately. Never coming here again

Schlechte Erfahrung!!! Wir kommen seit fast 20 Jahren hierher und der enorme Mangel an Service überrascht uns immer mehr. Zuerst schauen sie uns fast aus der Tür und reden uns unhöflich an als wir sagten, dass wir reserviert hatten: "das werden wir mal sehen“. Sie machten uns dafür verantwortlich, dass wir um 19:30 Uhr kamen. Sie bestanden darauf, dass wir um 19.00 Uhr eine Reservierung hatten. Die vereinbarte Zeit, 19.30 Uhr war jedoch zweimal von einer in Monschau lebenden Freundin in Monschau bestätigt. Dann wurde die Speisekarte aufgrund der geschäftigen Weihnachtszeit vereinfacht und stand nicht einmal mehr ein Steak auf der Speisekarte und auch kein Dessert (Eis). Allerdings wollen sie nicht verstehen, dass Touristen in dieser Weihnachtszeit das Abendessen genießen möchten. Der Besitzer/Koch und das Personal sitzen am Tisch und trinken und sagen nicht einmal Guten Tag, als wir gehen. Nie wieder „Alte Herrlichkeit“.

We were there for a family celebration with 18 people. We were immediately taken by the atmosphere, as was the extremely friendly and courteous service, which always had a smile and didn't allow itself to be disturbed by questions. Although the restaurant was very full, our orders were taken quickly and brought to the table surprisingly quickly. That was simply very good! The food was plentiful and everyone enjoyed it very much. In addition to the menu, which is actually not very extensive, there were a few additional dishes such as game goulash, sauerbraten or delicious vegetarian dumplings. All in all, it was an absolutely successful evening in a wonderful environment and excellent service. A recommendation from us!

I reserved a table in the restaurant for our company outing and can only say it was simply wonderful. The ambience is quiet, noble and slightly rustic. The staff and service were very polite and accommodating. The food was simply outstanding. There were 16 of us there and not one of them had anything to complain about with their food. Personally, with every dish that was brought, I was always annoyed that I didn't take this one. 😃 We were also very surprised at the prices. For this quality of food, ambience and service, we were all expecting a much higher bill than we received. This restaurant is definitely a clear recommendation.

Terrible experience. The starter plates were still on the table and had only just finished when the main course was served. When we paid the bill of €92 and we gave €100 in cash, we did not get our change back without explicitly saying that they could keep it. When we went to ask for the change back, the manager thought this was very strange and rolled his eyes. If the service had been better we would certainly have tipped, but definitely not anymore in this way. We will never come here again.

Beautiful restaurant, fantastic cuisine, magnificent service and very correct prices for the quality of service. Delicious mustard and beef carpaccio soup... several options of salads, meats and fish.

We hesitated to eat here because of the reviews, but once the food was served I didn't understand why the reviews were bad, the schnitzel with mushrooms including sauce for 14.50 is highly recommended! And not expensive, 1 salad for 2 people is enough, 1 comment the glass of wine is very large, actually enough for 2 glasses, that and the amount for the wine was the only disappointment, but it tasted great! 2 x schnitzel mushrooms with sauce, 1 colorful salad, 1 beer and 1 very large wine, 45.50

My husband and I were visiting here and initially had high hopes for this restaurant because we had already tried several restaurants in the area and were extremely satisfied. Unfortunately, the service wasn't courteous and the selection of food wasn't large either. The salad was very dry and had little to no taste and there were also grains of sand in it, which made it even less beneficial to eat. The fries were anything but crispy and salty. There was no salt or pepper at the table, and no sauces or dips were served. My husband's schnitzel was the only one that was okay. It's a shame, but we wouldn't visit this restaurant again and wouldn't recommend it to others.

Takes a long time until the main course is served. If you have specific wishes, it is better to eat somewhere else. I ordered a dish without onion, but nothing was done with it... Very disappointing that I was not able to eat half of my dish. Also not much choice in terms of desserts. I wouldn't recommend it.

It’s delicious, and the waiter’s service is super good. My German is not good, so I asked him to type and translate for me, and he also helped me. They also asked me if I knew English. If I couldn’t understand the German menu, I could still read the English menu. 😻😻😻

Where should I start? From the ambience to the food and the service, everything is absolutely perfect. We really enjoyed it, we were served very nicely, the atmosphere is absolutely harmonious (right down to the music) and super cozy, even the kitchen staff was extremely friendly. We would also give more stars and would love to come back.

Unfortunately it's no longer what it once was. October 2024 The old glory is an old restaurant with a view from the window of Monschau and the Rur that flows past it. Rustic but nice inside. The waiter was friendly, lit a candle and gave us the menus. The three of us ordered the house hit and were unfortunately very disappointed. My husband had the schnitzel with a very small bowl of mushrooms. My mom had the salmon with the noodles, which she really enjoyed. We found calling them Belgian fries an insult to the real Belgian fries, plus they were too salty. I had paid for everything and found out the next day that a Coke, a petrol and a Diet Coke had been added to the bill, which we hadn't drunk because we all drank beer. I don't think that's very nice, but I trust people still. We ordered espresso, which the waitress brought and blew out our candle, which felt like you can leave. Then we asked again for the menu, as we would like to have a schnapps after the food that was in our stomachs, but since there was nothing special on the menu, we asked if it would be possible to show us the drinks trolley, which the waitress responded to said my husband had feet to look at for himself. Even when she came back and took the map with her, she didn't ask if we had found anything else or wanted anything else from the beautiful drinks trolley. We ate a lot in Monschau and 5 years ago we were once in the old glory, but unfortunately they won't see us a third time.

Die alte Herrlichkeit ist ein altes Restaurant mit Blick am Fenster auf Monschau und der Rur, die daran vorbei fließt. Innen rustikal aber nett. Der Kellner war freundlich, machte eine Kerze an und gab uns die Speisekarten. Wir 3 Personen, bestellten den Renner des Hauses und waren leider darüber sehr enttäuscht. Mein Mann das Schnitzel mit einer sehr kleinen Schale Pilze. Meine Mama den Lachs mit den Nudeln, der ihr sehr gut geschmeckt hat. Belgische Pommes zu sagen, fanden wir eine Beleidigung den echten Belgischen Pommes, außerdem waren sie versalzen. Ich hatte alles bezahlt und am nächsten Tag festgestellt, das eine Cola , ein Sprit und ein Cola light mit dazu berechnet worden waren , die wir nicht getrunken hatten, da wir alle Bier tranken, das finde ich nicht sehr schön , aber ich vertraue den Menschen noch. Wir bestellten noch Espresso,die die Kellnerin brachte und unsere Kerze ausgeblasen hatte , so wie Ihr könnt dann gehen, sich anfühlte. Dann fragten wir nochmals nach der Karte, da wir gerne auf das Essen, welches uns im Magen rumging eine Schnaps trinken wollten, da es aber auf der Karte nichts besonderes gab, fragten wir ob es möglich wäre den Getränkewagen uns zu zeigen, worauff die Kellnerin meinte, mein Mann hätte ja Füße um selbst zu schauen. Auch als sie wiederkam und die Karte mitnahm , fragte sie nicht ob wir was noch gefunden haben oder noch was von dem schönen Getränkewagen haben wollten. Wir haben in Monschau viel gegessen und vor 5 Jahren waren wir schon einmal in der alten Herrlichkeit, aber ein drittes mal werden sie uns leider nicht mehr sehen.

We had dinner here twice. Get a seat on your first visit without a reservation. We had a reservation for the second visit. The service is friendly, attentive. The food is tasty (1 x schnitzel, 1 x fish). The prices are at tourist level.

We were there on schnitzel day. The schnitzels were ok. Unfortunately you don't have much sauce. The service wasn't good. We waited over 30 minutes for the bill. The staff was totally overwhelmed.

Very unfriendly, grumpy and annoyed staff, especially because we had a dog with us. We felt absolutely unwelcome and left the restaurant. And then found a much nicer location with dog-friendly staff.

Genießen mit Auge und Gaumen❣️ Das Ambiente passt zu Monschau und ist Wunderschön. Das Essen finde ich sehr gut. Wenn Monschau voll ist merkt man das Personal fehlt, aber die Qualität auf dem Teller ist Mega!

Wanted some vegetarian food. Unfortunately there wasn't any, just a salad. It would be schnitzel day. Well, we ordered drinks that didn't come, and the other guests didn't have any either. Then I ordered a schnitzel and my sister had to make do with a salad. Drinks came at some point. Food was so-so, similar to what we would get in a snack bar, nothing more. I think the waiter was fired. This is what it looked like. With the staff a restaurant falls or runs. I work in the industry myself and know what I'm talking about. It's a shame that vegetarian dishes should always be on the list, especially these days.

We had just arrived in Monschau and were hungry. This is how we came to the old glory. I also had a small dog with me. When I asked if the dog could have a little water, I was told that it wasn't possible because of the wooden floor. My schnitzel was some kind of compressed meat and didn't taste good at all. The Belgian fries were totally mushy. My conclusion: never again. It's a shame, you really have decorated the restaurant in a very nice, old-fashioned way and there are some real treasures there.

Der Kellner war freundlich, obwohl wir mehr getrunken hätten, wenn die Bedienung öfters nach uns geschaut hätte. Der Beilagensalat mit 6 € schon sehr teuer, war aber schmackhaft und frisch. Das sogen. Champignonschnitzel war sehr dünn, aber okay, an Champignons ist das Schnitzel allerdings vorbei geflogen, es waren maximal 1-2 kl. Pilze sehr dünn geschnitten. Die "Belgischen Fritten"waren sehr lapprig und überhaupt nicht knusprig, der Kellner bedauerte dies, tat das ab mit der Bemerkung, das könnte halt mal passieren. Unserer Bitte uns neue Fritten zu bringen, kam man nicht nach. Er kam dann nach 5 Minuten mit denselben Pommes zurück (kl. Schalefür2 Personen), inzwischen waren sie kalt, das wäre leider nicht möglich. Als Ausgleich bot man uns einen Espresso an. So sind wir um 60 € ärmer und reicher an Erfahrung schließlich noch woanders eingekehrt. Service ist anders.

Went there on a Monday (schnitzel day) because we had had good experiences at the "Alte Herrlichkeit" a few years ago and happened to be nearby. But we are disappointed. The mustard schnitzel / mushroom schnitzel were okay, but not upscale. Maybe the other dishes are still there; Today was a reduced menu, which is perfectly fine for Monday. The salad was super fresh, really, and beautifully presented. But for 3 adults 1 small bowl of Belgian fries? We had to reorder. Now fries are not an expensive material and also not 'cuisine extraordinare', so they could have been served a little more generously. And unfortunately the ambience is clearly showing its age, a little loving care is needed here. The young 'Gaston' didn't seem to have had any classical training either (yes, yes, I know, it's difficult these days)... remember: never lecture the guest if he is audacious - mon dieu! - to ask a question. It's okay to turn around and roll your eyes, but don't look down at the guest in front of everyone and smile indulgently and declaim "...that's why it's called mustard schnitzel!" Unfortunately, the person who was taught in this way was sitting with her back to me, so I couldn't see whether she took it with humor or gritted her teeth. I would have started to growl and bared my teeth... ;-)

We came here spontaneously and can only recommend the restaurant. The “Alte Herrlichkeit” schnitzel was a great fried schnitzel topped with fried ham and tomato slices and gratinated with a very tasty cheese. Served hot in a pan on a wooden board. Plus delicious thick Belgian fries. A poem! The price is reasonable for the quantity and quality! Gladly again!🙂

Eramos un grupo de 4 amigas. Nos indicaron q debíamos ir 7.30pm pues más tarde no nos darían de cenar. Al llegar pedimos q se nos asignara una mesa con vistas al río, pues había 2 ya vaciadas. Nos expresábamos en alemán pues una persona del grupo había vivido en alemania. Se lo planteamos a la camarera q nos dijo q no, y ante nuestra insistencia dijo q lo preguntaría. Al minuto volvió y nos dijo q no nos cambiaba. Pese a la inexplicable respuesta y por temor a no ser servidas en otro lugar, decidimos quedarnos y pedir. A las 8 llegaron 2 parejas q tras haber insistido, sí fueron sentadas en dichas mesas, pese a la hora q ya era y pese a que a nosotras se nos había negado. Ante ello, decidimos levantarnos y marcharnos ante lo cual no recibimos ninguna disculpa, lo cual aún empeora la calidad de la experiencia vivida.

Nice and beautiful restaurant with friendly service. I didn't think the house schnitzel was such a success (schnitzel overloaded with cheese, tomato and I believe ham), but that is of course personal.

Been here several times, the food (explicitly the old glory) is really exceptionally tasty. Ambience at the window is nice. Unfortunately, today we had a day with very few visitors so it was just closed. We were still served despite the staff having already left for the evening, which alone is very rare these days and is definitely worth 5 stars. We will definitely come back.

Great old interior, great house - you're perched above the Rur. Food very good for Monschau standards. Had a veal steak with asparagus and potatoes, perfect. Apparently there was a change of operator (it wasn't so good before).

Nice restaurant in a top location on the Rur. The staff was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food served wasn't that good or tasty. There is still a lot of room for improvement.

We tried the apple strudel with ice cream and vanilla sauce. It is a bit expensive, 6,10€ but it was really tasty. The service was good and relatively fast.

Really very fine food with a great view! The truffle avioli were particularly good.

It took a long time before we were helped (the terrace was otherwise empty; understandable in retrospect with such reviews). They were then not allowed to take a free chair so that the three of us could sit at a two-person table. Were barked at and then walked away. Please stay away from here and spend your money on better catering.

We were on vacation, despite the lack of staff at short notice, we always remained calm and friendly! Steak was cooked to perfection and the schnitzel “Alte Glory” was super delicious!

We received nice and friendly service!!! It wasn't crowded and we had a nice view of the Rur. The price is expensive (like everywhere) but the price performance ratio was ok 👍🏻. The toilets were clean 👍🏻. Overall, a nice stay in the restaurant (and Monschau).

The Carpaccio was reasonable, the rumb steak was sold out, cut alte herrlichkeit, came with fries, no salad. For dessert they only had apple strudel. Not worth repeating.

I don't understand the reviews here. The staff was super friendly, the restaurant has a nice old school vibe and the food was great. Nothing but a good time, and we'll visit again.
