The Sparta restaurant in Altenburg is a real recommendation for lovers of Greek cuisine. Here you can get authentic dishes that are freshly prepared and taste to the point. The gyros in particular are crispy and well seasoned, but the other dishes such as souvlaki are also convincing.
The ambience is cozy, modern and inviting - perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or family. The service is friendly, attentive and makes you feel comfortable as a guest. The portions are generous and the price-performance ratio is absolutely right.
If you're looking for delicious Greek food in a pleasant atmosphere, you've come to the right place!

Impudence! Bad service, bad food and pure rip off
Our visit to the Gassenhauer in Altenburg was a disaster from start to finish. At the reception we were greeted by an annoyed and stressed-looking waitress. Although the restaurant was almost empty (a small group of 10-12 people (who, by the way, dined shortly after we arrived) and two other guests), she told us at the front door that everything was taking longer. To us it seemed as if she had no interest in welcoming new guests at all.
The food was subpar. Even the starter – two solyanka – came to the table lukewarm instead of being served hot. When I finished eating, the soup was already completely cool. In addition, my partner had specifically asked for solyanka without lemon and without icing. Instead, both portions were served directly without anything, without asking - that's just not possible and shows this waitress' lack of care!
My friend had the chicken breast fillet for 16.80 euros. Three tiny, rock-hard pieces of chicken were served, a mini bowl of salad - and the buttered peas that were supposed to come with it according to the menu were completely missing. We didn't notice at first until the waitress suddenly came to the table after we had finished eating and told us that the cook had forgotten the butter peas. After all, she said, the peas had been taken off the bill - which she emphasized three times.
But what really made us angry was the billing for the salad. The small bowl of salad that was on the plate was charged extra at 3.80 euros - without any notice from the waitress! If something is charged extra, it either doesn't belong on the plate or you have to point it out to the guests. But that wasn't done, and for us it was nothing other than a pure rip-off. We got the money back, but there was no apology or any sign of kindness. On the contrary: the waitress seemed completely uninvolved, couldn't even look at us and just wanted to get the situation over with quickly. That's how the farewell went 😂 Head down - if I don't see you - you won't see me either Oh man 🫣
The schnitzel was also a total failure. The salsify that was included as a side dish was nothing more than a sticky, floury paste and had absolutely nothing to do with fresh ingredients. Again, quality and care were lacking and the taste was simply disappointing.
By the way, my brawn was also inedible: far too sour, cheaply made and just plain bad. The fried arugula (very strange) and the salad on the right are not part of the dish! This was a kind gesture from the gentlemen at the table in order to find something edible. The entire meal seemed bland and wasn't worth the price at all.
Conclusion: This visit was a complete failure. Annoyed, unfriendly service, bad food and blatant rip-offs with hidden additional costs - it just doesn't work that way. One thing is clear to us: never again Restaurant Gassenhauer in Altenburg!
