Very friendly and helpful! Great food, including some modern dishes with a twist, alongside fantastic Baden classics. Wonderful beer garden. By the way, it might be a bit too loud inside for some people at certain times, especially when regulars or larger groups are there.

We had high expectations – and couldn't find anything to complain about. Everything just works here. Beautiful ambiance, appropriate decor, cleanliness, fast, attentive service, exceptionally good, high-quality cuisine. Noticeably finely seasoned. We'll be back. The prices are absolutely fair for the quality and quantity.

We actually wanted to get something to eat, but after finishing our beer, we decided to skip it. Vegetarian dishes were just as expensive or more expensive than some of the meat dishes. If the vegetarian dishes aren't even anything special, it raises the question of whether this is done intentionally, or whether inferior meat is simply used, allowing the meat dishes to be offered at a lower price. The dishes we saw at neighboring tables weren't particularly well-presented and served. It looked like cafeteria food with a slice of lemon and some parsley on top. Overall, unfortunately, the price is a bit questionable. You can eat much nicer and more affordably.

I loved my sour liver, but my companion had chosen medallions of chanterelle mushrooms from the chanterelle menu. There were three medallions, each with a small chanterelle, and the taste wasn't what you'd expect. It's a shame—I would have loved to go back—it probably depends on what you order. The service was exceptionally friendly and attentive.

Excellent restaurant with a beautiful beer garden. The service is very friendly and attentive. All the dishes were excellently prepared and beautifully presented. You truly feel welcome here as a guest. The restaurant is also located right next to the Hirzberg campsite. The prices are high, but the food is first-class and the service is excellent. We would be happy to come back. Update: We were here again today. Unfortunately, guests who arrived after us received their menus and their food before us. We were only served after we asked. When we wanted to pay, other tables were checked out, and we were forgotten again, and the bill included wine that we hadn't ordered and didn't receive. A real shame, so we deducted two points for service.

It was simply pure enjoyment again. Super friendly, attentive, and unobtrusive service. Our meal was excellent, the Portuguese red wine a poem. One small criticism is allowed: the truly excellent crème brûlée could have been warmed in the center. For us, a perfectly enjoyable evening. Thank you, we'll be back. P.S.: We strongly recommend making a reservation.

For the second time, simply a disappointment! For a lot of money, I ate sausage salad and a large salad with turkey skewers. The sausage salad, garnished with green lettuce leaves, had blackened edges, and the portion was very small, along with two pieces of strange bread. The large salad with turkey skewers, the turkey tasted watery, and the salad wasn't really dressed at all. The salad with turkey was simply bland, and that for €42 with drinks. Okay for a drink in the beer garden, but not recommended for eating.

We were there as part of a larger group. First, the positives: The ambiance and the taste of the food were great. However, the portions (in the non-self-service area) were extremely small. None of us were satisfied, and for the prices, it wasn't really reasonable. The waiter asked if everything was okay. We asked him about the small portions, but his reaction was just a laugh and the reply, "Small portions are normal for a Michelin-starred chef." The self-service area next door seemed to look better. We might try our luck there again.

A must for anyone looking for good food in Freiburg! The service was super friendly and attentive. The decor is beautiful both inside and out, with plenty of space. The menu is clear and the food is excellent! If I weren't a poor student, I'd come here more often!

Perfect day in June: I got a spot next door for my campervan and then walked 30 meters to the beer garden. The quality in the self-service area was good, the staff were friendly, and the prices were reasonable. A good beer selection, including Gutedel wine from the Markgräfler Land region.

German dinner really very tasty and digestible, courteous and attentive service, welcoming atmosphere both in the internal room and in the Biergarten! Perfect to celebrate our wedding anniversary!

I had one of the most delicious foods in my life at this restaurant. The wonderful atmosphere plus the friendly and caring staff also helped me enjoy my evening.

Initially, we were impressed by the very nice beer garden. However, we were not impressed by the food – asparagus with potatoes and poor hollandaise sauce made from a packet. We found the €12.50 surcharge for four tightly rolled slices of Black Forest ham to be simply outrageous. €29.50 as the base price for asparagus with potatoes and hollandaise sauce is already expensive. We cannot recommend this restaurant without reservation for dining. The attached beer garden is perfectly adequate for a drink. It's a shame, we were looking forward to this restaurant. On our next visit to Freiburg, we will try other restaurants.

Great food even though we arrived 45 minutes before closing time

A popular restaurant. Outdoor seating in the Biergarten is of course the number one choice. Nonetheless if it's not a sunny day it is quite gloomy with tall trees and a hill just beside. I'm afraid the service, although seemingly fine, is not as attentive as one would expect. We had no one come by after the meals were served to enquire as to their suitability. Later we waited inordinately long to pay, after asking twice. And the menu, in our case, was already out of two items at 1830 in the evening. The dishes are very good but not extraordinary. And it is fairly pricey, but no more I suppose than comparable restaurants (Euro 133 for four people, no starters, only main course, no alcoholic drinks, espresso at the end). All in all, a worthwhile experience but not five stars and not even four.

Went here for lunch again today. As always, it was a delight: excellent vegetarian dishes, attentive and friendly service, and good value for money.

Unfortunately, we didn't even get a chance to look at the menu after standing for 25 minutes, only to be told that there were no more tables available for us. Frustrating for us. One recommendation, however, is to make a reservation.

I have asparagus with scrapes and Ordered pork medallion. It came with potatoes. The scratches came later. On the plate were 5 asparagus (half of how big asparagus really are) Unfortunately, the 3 medallion was just tough. But the scratches (plucked pancakes) tasted the worst. All of this, with 1 glass of water, cost 41 euros. I'm increasingly noticing that prices are skyrocketing after Corona, but the quality on the plate is decreasing more and more. I complained about the whole thing in the restaurant. The reaction was: Thank you for telling us that, that's it.

Great, old, but positively meant, rustic inn with excellent food including a shady garden restaurant!

We eat a lot and eat very well (good home cooking up to 3 Michelin stars). We really enjoyed the evening at the Gasthaus zum Stahl because of the friendliness of the entire team and the excellent execution of the authentic dishes. The friendliness and openness towards our two small children (3 and 5) was also fantastic. We would love to come back next time we are in Freiburg.

Very nice restaurant, visited while passing through. Great dishes, lamb dumplings and fried liver were great.

Practical, a good restaurant right next to the campsite. The food tasted delicious, the service was great. We felt very comfortable and would like to come back at some point. We are on our way to Italy.

But of course it's fish weeks, just not at lunchtime. There's a big sign outside for fish weeks at lunchtime and in the evening. We then left and canceled future reservations. Of course, inquiries via email went unanswered. The kitchen is really good, but organization and service can be forgotten, unfortunately...

The vegetarian mushroom ragout for over 20 euros was underground. Not a ragout of fresh mushrooms, but more of a mushroom soup with a few fresh mushrooms thrown in. The few vegetables were also cooked tastelessly in water. The napkin dumplings are probably also a finished product. Really a shame. The restaurant used to be really good.

Everything just fits here! Super friendly service staff, honest dishes of the best quality and a great ambience! Anytime again 👍🏼

This evening we (couple) stopped for dinner at the “Zum Stahl” restaurant in Freiburg. We absolutely loved the service in this house and the German-French cuisine. We really enjoyed the delicious food, imaginative aperitifs and excellent wine (to match the menu). We recommend this restaurant. A reservation is recommended.

Food is really good, service is okay but not sublime. If you have not reserved and it is full, they will not automatically offer that you can take it with you. While that is possible. They say quite loudly that they are full and so you are out of luck, that's what it comes down to. Too bad, luckily we were lucky, but the people after us were not. Not reserved? Then go early, as soon as they open.

Inn with beer garden directly at the Hirzberg campsite. The service is friendly and attentive. Since the inn is always quite busy, including many Freiburgers, make sure you make a reservation, at least indoors. The food is very good and plentiful, although a bit more expensive. There should be something for everyone on the menu. Sometimes we couldn't decide! There is also a lunch menu. We will definitely come back next time we visit the place.

The leg of deer was tender but also very dry and without any juice. Unfortunately, this is unacceptable for two meals and drinks for around 100.00 euros. We expect better craftsmanship here. We won't come anymore. It's a shame about the evening :-( ...

Never in my life have I tasted a simple carrot so intense! All natural flavours are perfectly rounded and no exaggeration - absolutely perfect consistency of EVERYTHING that we tasted tonight. Portions are right on spot - no overeating and yet getting to 100% feeling deeply satisfied. This cook is truly an artist. This level of "deliciousness" happened to me only once in my whole life. From now on, I will celebrate everything I can in this restaurant - all my friends and family have to taste this art!

We often ate at “Stahl”. But now they are here normal inn food at the expensive price level of upscale cuisine -: Almost 30 euros per main course for schnitzel, goulash, onion roast...? A visit is therefore hardly worth it.

Food was somehow not what I imagined it would be there. A large portion (small and delicate would definitely be better), but it was carelessly slapped onto the plate and didn't taste particularly tasty. Better canteen food - that's how I would describe it. Service very inattentive. Didn't quite work out for us.

Most beautiful beer garden in the city: gravel on the ground, the sun shining through the chestnuts, fair prices. Can you go there... no, you should definitely go there!

Our experiences at Gasthaus Zum Stahl are ambivalent. We were there 4 times in total. Three times indoors during the cold season and once in the beer garden because our reservation was moved outside. In the part of the beer garden served by the restaurant, the price-performance ratio was poor. We paid over 140 euros for 2x menu and a bottle of wine. The portions, for example Wienerschnitzel, were small and the filling side dish of potatoes or pasta was over-abundant and unloving. The food was decent but definitely not more than that! This experience is in contrast to the experiences indoors in the spring, a completely different quality of the food and we remember it positively. The atmosphere in the beer garden and also in the dining room is beautiful and the staff is also friendly. Bottom line: When I pay for fine restaurant cuisine, I want what I get in return, whether indoors or outdoors.

Nice ambience, quaint, rustic and with a fairly large beer garden. Very nice staff, but they could be a little more attentive. The food was quite tasty but unfortunately the price-performance ratio wasn't right. Too expensive for portions that are too small. I would have expected a lot more in terms of taste and €34 for the half portion in the picture is just way too much, especially without a salad! But on a positive note: the bread that came with it was excellent!

I visited this restaurant and was asked 3 times what I wanted to eat. I told the waiter that I was waiting for my wife. When she was there he asked 3 more times and all in 20 minutes. I told him that the questions were just too much is the answer was I can go somewhere else. It's a disgrace and I recommend avoiding this place.

It fits here! Half beer garden, semi-bourgeois restaurant. We had reserved. All tacko. Our table fresh and tidy, the first wine, a Baden Pinot Gris. Top. The food was very good, the second wine, a Baden Pinot Blanc, was also excellent. Only the service staff gets one star less. A little too clumsy. But the overall impression counts, hence 4.5 stars. Gladly again.

We used the self service part of the restaurant which is outside, and eventually translated enough of the menu to get a couple of really nice chicken salad dishes. Nice selection of local wines and it made for a nice relaxing evening- kept away from the bushes though as seemed to be more mosquitoes tucked in the corners!

We were absolutely thrilled with cordon bleu and gourmet lasagne with asparagus in the beer garden in wonderful weather!

We visited the restaurant with a bus group of 50 guests. Even though we were able to pre-order the food, we were still surprised by the quick service at all tables. Everyone in our group was provided with drinks and food in a friendly manner and almost at record speed. Reordering drinks also went extremely quickly. The food was plentiful and tasted very good. We can unreservedly recommend the inn for buses, but also for individual guests.

When you arrive you are charmed by the place...and especially by the wonderful smell of cooking...like the old fashioned way...and what happens next is worth it...really! Friendly and competent staff☺️

We were at the campsite next door and decided at short notice to eat at Stahl without a reservation. We were lucky and got two places. We ordered lamb with tarragon mustard sauce with homemade gnochi and a Wienerschnitzel (veal). It was wonderful to the palate and to the eye. And the best thing: you can get small portions upon request. At our age, we can no longer manage such large portions. Thanks to food waste. The price-performance ratio is absolutely great given this quality and the service and ambience

Einmal mehr durften wir heute Mittag das vegetarische Tagesessen genießen. Heute gab es Kartoffelklösschen in Steinpilzbutter mit Saisongemüse, siehe Foto. Für 12,90 Euro ein definitiv mit Liebe und Können gekochtes Mittagessen serviert zu bekommen macht einfach Freude. Der Service ist seit Jahren freundlich, zuvorkommend und aufmerksam (Danke!) - man merkt einfach, dass die Mitarbeiter*innen hier mit Freude bei der Arbeit sind. Angenehm überrascht waren wir, dass nach der Rückkehr zum alten Mehrwertsteuersatz von 19 % zum 1.1.24 nicht die komplette Steuererhöhung an die Gäste weiter gegeben wurde. Auch das ist nicht selbstverständlich. Macht weiter so :-)

Egal, ob To go oder vor Ort: sehr aufmerksames Personal, gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, ursprüngliches warmes Ambiente, große Portionen, tolles selbstgemachtes Brot. Prima Location in der Oberau Freiburg.

Wir wollten am zweiten Weihnachtsfeiertag dort essen leider wurden Tische doppelt belegt was wiederum dazu führte das wir trotz Reservierung keinen Tisch bekamen. Wir hatten uns wirklich auf das hervorragende Essen gefreut, aber an Weihnachten die Leute draußen stehen zu lassen finde ich ein Unding. Letztendlich gingen wir nach 20 Minuten in der Kälte hungrig nach Hause.

Wir waren anlässlich eines Geburtstages mit 10 Leuten zu Gast . Alles in allem war alles wie es sein soll. Service war freundlich,die Essen kamen schön gleichzeitig, handwerklich gut und von den Portionsgrößen angenehm. Ich hätte lediglich 2 kleine Kritikpunkte,welche aber nicht die Gesamtleistung schmälern. Der Feldsalat hat das Dressing nur gesehen,berührt scheinen sie sich leider nicht zu haben.Kein Salz, kein Essig ,nur 1 Tropfen Öl. Und das Geschirr empfand ich persönlich als sehr langweilig- aber das ist Geschmackssache

War zum ersten Mal in der Gastätte und das Essen war sehr gut.

Sehr freundliches Personal, auch am Telefon. Das Essen und die Weinauswahl einfach klasse! Grosse Portionen und schön serviert. Das Ambiente ist zum wohlfühlen und Parkplätze gibt es auch genug. Zum weiterempfehlen!!

Bestes Essen aus frischen, saisonale Zutaten gezaubert. Die Kreativität und Geschmackskompositionen sind sensationell. Sowohl hervorragende vegetarische als auch Fisch-und Fleischgerichte. Wer hier die Portionsgröße oder ein schlechtes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis kritisiert, darf sehr gern woanders essen gehen. Dies ist ein Ort, an dem alle Beteiligten nur ein Ziel haben: Essen-gehen wieder zu dem zu machen, was es sein sollte: Genuß pur. Unser Essen war ausgezeichnet. Die Zitronen-Thymianpolenta mit caramelisiertem Ziegenkäse , ein Traum. Alle Teller schön angerichtet. Wir kommen gerne wieder.

Gehobene Gastronomie in einem wunderschönen, alten Gebäude mit einem Biergarten wie aus dem Bilderbuch..

Das war echt mal besser. Mittlerweile ist es eigentlich nur noch teuer und teilweise unverschämt, was da für viel Geld serviert wird. Wenn ich Panna Cotta mit Kompott für 9,80 Euro bestelle, dann erwarte ich etwas mehr als ein halb gefrorenen geschmacks-neutralen Klotz mit drei Tröpfchen Kompott am Tellerrand. Kann man leider gar nicht mehr empfehlen.

Leider keine Zeit zum Essen gehabt. Flotte Bedienung, netter Kastaniengarten. Nächstes Mal vielleicht Essen probieren 😉

Das Gasthaus zum Stahl ist ein uriges Landgasthaus mit regionalen, deftigen Speisen, sowie einem Biergarten unter großen Bäumen. Sehr empfehlenswert!
