Pleasantly quiet corner to eat, even when it was busy.

Twelve of us just went out to eat, and the German food was super delicious. Everything was fresh and homemade. What we also liked was that it wasn't too big, it was cozy, and there was no loud music, or even no music at all. We all had a great time. I highly recommend it.

First of all... It was the best meal we've had in a long time. It was our first visit there, and we opted for the leg of fallow deer and the leg of duck with red cabbage and side dishes. Aromatic, tender, and the sauces were excellent! The fried potatoes were also great, crispy, and, above all, not oversalted! The bacon and onions were perfectly balanced with the potatoes... it's simply wonderful to know that something like this still exists. A huge compliment to the chef and chef. We'll be back... no question!

We were there yesterday! The Finkenwerder plaice was so good, I had tears in my eyes. The vegetables, everything cooked to perfection. Very, very friendly service! I couldn't imagine anything better!

Unfortunately a disappointment. We waited a really long time for the food, and yes - we understand that when everything is made to perfection. All the meals arrived differently after almost an hour of waiting. My husband got his pork medallions but waited another 10-15 minutes for his side dish, and the food got cold! Then came my soup, and lastly the spaetzle for the children that we had ordered. The sauce was not tasty, and the spaetzle were unfortunately too soft. My tomato soup was good, though. The fried potatoes from the other main course were very greasy, which is fine, but they were also almost cold. In the end, they wanted to charge us €10.50 per child for the side-sized spaetzle. When we asked, they gave us a total of €9, making a total of €7.50 per children's meal. The manager was not very understanding and overall not very understanding. Unfortunately, a mediocre start to our vacation for us. And no, we didn't "drink" anything. My husband had a beer, the first one of the day. We often go out for good, home-style food, are happy to pay a bit more, and are anything but stingy. But this was a real disappointment. I don't understand the good reviews. During the 50 minutes we waited, the waitress skillfully ignored us, not a word, not a glance. And the food, as described above, was, in our opinion, absolutely not good overall; the service was, unfortunately, disastrous.

A simply furnished restaurant where the freshest ingredients are carefully prepared. The food was delicious. I had the sailor's pan, three kinds of fried fish fillets in a delicate mustard sauce, skillfully fried potatoes, and a selection of fresh seasonal vegetables with a subtle herb flavor. Yum!

Every time I was in Kiel, I wanted to visit this restaurant, just to see what it was all about, especially because of its unusual name. Friends told me it wasn't for me, supposedly only for posh people or celebrities, or people who think they are. Now I stood there again, studied the lunch menu, and went in. First impression: somewhat rustic, typically German (in a good sense), quiet, and cozy. The tables were lovingly set, and I could choose my own seat, as the only other guests at the time were three nice older ladies. The only server, a pleasant young woman, brought me the menu, which also included an extensive selection of drinks. Afterward, she took great care of the three ladies. I had to wait a good 20 minutes for the food, but if it had been quicker, I would have assumed it was a warmed-up ready meal. In a real restaurant, the preparation takes a while; you know from home how long cooking times are. What was then served was a poem! I was transported back in time to a time when my grandmother or mother still cooked for me. Everything was cooked to perfection, no seasoning required, piping hot, and absolutely delicious! Perhaps someone knows that scene from the movie "Ratatouille," when the restaurant tester tastes the vegetable soup and suddenly relives his childhood? I felt something similar. Okay, what else? Everything was clean, the service was absolutely professional and attentive, everything was recommendable. Pricing: Absolutely reasonable for the quality. Parking situation: The parade ground is across the street, and there are plenty of spaces. I'd be happy to come back.

Had dinner here with a colleague who'd been there several times before. It's a nice place; from the photos, the owner seemed like a nice guy, but we didn't see him. I ordered a schnitzel because I usually love it, but this one didn't really convince me: the breading, instead of being crispy and evenly distributed over the meat, was falling apart and soft. On top of the schnitzel, a nice fried egg, half-burnt, was served. On a separate plate, mushrooms and onions were not bad. No fries to accompany it; I got some from my colleague, but besides being too greasy, they had diced bacon on top, which must have made them even greasier. In short, we didn't eat very well. For a dish and a beer, I paid €23. My colleague wasn't very happy with the salmon either, finding it hard to digest... salmon! For me, that's a no.

Great home cooking. Small and cozy. Huge portions and excellent value for money. Always recommended. It's important that it's not fast food; instead, they take their time to prepare the food fresh. I've enjoyed going there for years.

Very good, classic German cuisine at affordable prices. The commitment to classic style is clearly evident in the table setting, tableware, utensils, and background music. Friendly and very helpful staff. It's ironically bitter that someone from Biafra has to come to show Germans how their cuisine works, and that the term "Mohrenkopf" (Moor's head) is not discriminatory, but rather a tribute to the healing and spice art of Africans in general (Moor's pharmacy) and Saint Maurice (a Black man) in particular....

This restaurant offers excellent service. We were immediately greeted warmly and felt at home. Although we had to wait a bit for our food, we considered this a positive, as it's a sign that everything is freshly prepared. The food was fantastic! We had the salmon and shrimp gratin, which was very, very tasty. It was just a little salty for my taste, as I don't normally eat that much salt. However, I highly recommend this dish.

Great fish, I had herring and the next day plaice. Couldn't do better (I'm a fisherman and hobby cook myself). Service was very friendly and attentive.

Home-style, German, rock-solid DELICIOUS cuisine, when it comes to the ambience we would say “traditional” 😁, excellent, friendly service. So if we weren't tourists, I would definitely try one or two dishes here.

1.5 hour wait for the food, then the food comes so delayed that the first dish would already be cold if you waited. There is nothing wrong with the food itself. Also the staff is friendly.

The food is well-crafted, tasty and well prepared. The service is friendly, but a bit reserved and could, for example, offer coffee or dessert after your meal. We both had the fish and both dishes were fabulous. The atmosphere is a bit old and rather uncomfortable. Here you could renovate a little or decorate it a little more lovingly with 2-3 simple steps.

Wir waren letztes Jahr im Herbst das erste Mal dort! Desaster! Wir haben 1 1/2 Std auf das Essen gewartet und bei zweien war dies versalzen! Aber kann ja mal passieren!!!! Dachten wir! Also haben wir gestern dem ganzen noch einmal eine Chance gegeben! Aber mit Sicherheit das letzte Mal!!!!!!!!!!!! Daß das Ambiente ein bisschen abgeranzt ist, würde mich normal nicht stören, wenn der Service und das Essen gut ist, aber ich musst leider auch das 2. Mal feststellen ,etwas schlechtes gibt es in Kiel nicht! Wir konnten relativ schnell bestellen ( super, da wir noch einen Termin hatten) Nach einer 1/2 Std wurde uns mitgeteilt das 2 von uns ,auf eine Samstagabend 18h Keine Pommes zum Essen bekommen, das sie aus waren!!!!!!!!!!! Ok!!!!! Nach einer weiteren 1/2 Std kamen dann diese beiden dann ihr Essen! TK Schnitzel TK Pilzsause ,einmal mit kalten öligen Bratkartoffeln, einmal mit TK Kroketten!!!!!! Der dritte bekam sein Essen als wir mit dem Essen fertig waren! Der musst dann Schlingen, da wir ja noch zu einer anderen Veranstaltung mussten! Auch das nachbestellen von Getränken war nicht möglich ,da beide Setvicekräfte es wichtiger fanden gelangweilt in Servietten rum zuzupfen ,oder hinter dem Tresen zustehen! Und nein! Wir waren NICHT alkoholisiert ,da das Argument oft als Gegenargumente für diese Kritik vom Mohrenkopf kommt! Anstatt etwas zu ändern beschimpft er seine Kunden! Schade!!!!!! Kritik könnte man auch zum psitiven nutzen um sich zu entwickeln , aber das wollen die vom Mohrenkopf Anscheinend nicht!

I've been to the Mohrenkopf twice now and been disappointed twice! For a ready-made schnitzel with limp and cold fried potatoes instead of French fries, which unfortunately ran out on a Saturday and canned champions, the price of €16.90 is absolutely not justified! The service also left a lot to be desired. I had to wait a long time for our dish. There were three of us and the food from the third person at the table only came when we had both already finished our Jägerschnitzel! For me it was the last time in this restaurant

March 2025 We were there for the first time last fall! Disaster! We waited 1 1/2 hours for the food and two of them were too salty! But it can happen!!!! We thought so! So yesterday we gave it another chance! But definitely the last time!!!!!!!!!!!! The fact that the ambience is a bit ragged wouldn't normally bother me if the service and food was good, but unfortunately I have to say for the second time that there is nothing bad in Kiel! We were able to order relatively quickly (great because we still had an appointment). After half an hour we were informed that 2 of us would not get any fries with our meal on a Saturday evening at 6 p.m. and that they were out!!!!!!!!!!! OK!!!!! After another 1/2 hour these two got their food! TK schnitzel TK mushroom sause, once with cold, oily fried potatoes, once with frozen croquettes!!!!!! The third got his food when we finished eating! He then had to sling because we still had to go to another event! It was also not possible to reorder drinks, as both service staff found it more important to be bored and pick at napkins or stand behind the counter! And no! We were NOT drunk, as the argument often comes from the Mohrenkopf as a counterargument to this criticism! Instead of changing something, he insults his customers! Too bad!!!!!! You could also use criticism positively to develop yourself, but the Mohrenkopf apparently don't want that!

I've never had to wait so long for my food. We only had our food after 2 hours and the food didn't even come at the same time. An absolute disgrace. Not all the tables were occupied.

We were in the Mohrenkopf for the first time today. We had called beforehand to see if there was anything available as the THW Kiel was playing and the restaurants in the area were all full. Lucky you 🙃. Food was quite good, but took 1.5 hours. That's too long. Unfortunately there was only one waitress and probably only one in the kitchen. No risk of repetition

The table was pre-booked for 4 people. The restaurant wasn't full yet. It took a while until we got the menu and ordered the drinks. They came promptly. Our order was taken, okay so far. Then the service person came again and told us that someone should choose another meal because the one we wanted was no longer available. We did that with gritted teeth. Now it took time again. The food arrived little by little. By the time everyone had completed their order, the first side dishes were cold again...But it was tasty again??? Rather not.

Not the usual German Pub, but the real Germanic cuisine... and I guarantee that they have one... perhaps not as rich in dishes as ours but certainly worth taking into consideration for quality and richness. The characteristic restaurant, a bit like our "ancient" trattorias, is warm and welcoming and the expense for a fancy dinner was very low compared to other places considered mass-market. The service at the tables was excellent... to come back.

We have known this restaurant for many years and always enjoy going there. Even the service has been there for 15 years - always friendly, nice and courteous. Rarely has something not tasted as expected. However, a friend was actually unlucky .The sauce for the duck legs was too salty + the red cabbage didn't taste good at all. It's a shame! But the other 4 of us were, as always, very satisfied. The price-performance ratio is also okay. We'll be back gladly again.👍

Very tasty food at normal prices

We had dinner there. We ordered two duck legs. The duck really smelled. After we spoke to the waitress, she told us that this is how the duck is prepared. We have eaten a lot of duck and in different ways but never anything like this!! Not recommended!

The shop has become known through many reports in the media and was therefore a small highlight for me and worth the detour. Very tasty and something new apart from the usual stuff you get. The staff was also very friendly and accommodating. 🙂! 10 out of 10

Wir waren am 26.12 mit der Familie zum Weihnachtsessen im Mohrenkopf. Gleich bei der Begrüßung wurde uns gesagt, dass es 2 Gerichte von 5 nicht mehr da ist. Statt Steinbeißer gäbe es Seelachs. Beim Dessert wäre eins von 3 anfänglich aus. Als wir dann beim Dessert angekommen waren, gab es nur noch eins. Preislich konnte man da aber auch nichts machen, da es ja ein Festpreis ist. Nach etwa 1,5 Stunden hatten wir dann tatsächlich unser Essen und nach über 3 Stunden waren wir dann tatsächlich fertig. Geschmacklich war das Essen gut, was dann auch alles an positiven Erlebnissen war. Der Service war unterirdisch und die Wartezeit unnormal lang. Der Chef unprganisiert und augenscheinlich überfordert. Einmal und nie wieder.

An absolute nightmare. Not recommended. We were at the Mohrenkopf on Boxing Day. When we received the menus we were not told that two dishes were already sold out and one was served with a different main component. We waited probably half an hour for our drinks and an hour for the appetizers. The main course came after an hour and 40 minutes. Not a single word of apology or warning that it might take a little longer. The food came at different times so one of us was already finished by the time the last of us got our food. Then the dessert was included in the first order but when it was our turn with the dessert two of the three options were already sold out. In the end everyone had to pay the full price, even though there was almost nothing left to choose from. Neither the service staff nor the owner himself (who was the chef that evening) offered an ounce of understanding or an apology for the fact that we were very dissatisfied after three hours. At that point it was no longer important to us that the food was delicious (although the fish was full of bones and the duck was too dry). Terrible service. Tables were not cleared and no questions were asked for additional drinks. I will definitely not recommend this restaurant.

Very nice and good service. We each had half a duck with red cabbage and bread dumplings. The doneness of the duck couldn't be topped. The juicy meat literally fell off the bone and the sauce, the red cabbage and the bread dumplings were perfectly prepared. It doesn't get any better.

I've wanted to go to the Mohrenkopf for a long time. I had read and heard a lot about the owner. But to cut a long story short, I can't recommend the restaurant. The evening was bizarre from start to finish. We asked for a table for two and said we had to move on quickly. The Ostseehalle was waiting for us. We were given a place by the door to the toilet. The restaurant is completely worn out and worn out from front to back. This urgently needs to be completely renovated. Everything worn out and loveless. A stressed waitress took our order. The neighboring table warned of a long wait. And what followed was a long wait. After 45 minutes I asked "yes, the next dishes are going out soon" but it wasn't ours. After more than an hour, the question again was, "Yes, it's starting now" and after the drinks had been empty for over 45 minutes and we were completely ignored and no food came, we got dressed and wanted to pay for the drinks and leave. An uncomprehending waitress looked at us, looked into the kitchen and said, here's the food, it's starting now. OK, sit back down and wait. What came? Nothing, after 10 minutes the fried potatoes nothing else, then at some point the schnitzel and my Dutch oven. The last one was a horrible, gray mess. The fried potatoes were obviously not ready yet, only the schnitzel was good. We ate, paid and left the restaurant without saying a word or greeting. Or better yet, the restructuring case. There is an urgent need to invest in friendly staff, spatulas, paint and furniture. I haven't experienced such a run-down restaurant in years. Conclusion: Bizarre atmosphere from start to finish, service that is sometimes not very honest and really average food. So no recommendation at all. And I'm sorry because our expectations weren't even remotely met. No "it's taking longer to eat", no "sorry, we're so sorry", just a "do you want to eat this now or not?" There may be better days there, there are also good reviews, but for us it is the worst restaurant in Kiel today.

Basically, the restaurant “zum Mohrenkopf” is very friendly and the food is delicious. We booked our second Christmas party (the first was a few years ago) here for 10 people and pre-ordered our menu. We were called the day before to see if there were any changes and we found that very thoughtful. Everything was prepared for us on site so that we could feel comfortable - apart from the broken backrest on a bench. We were served in a friendly manner, but despite having ordered in advance, we had to wait almost an hour and then the food came in dribs and drabs. By the time the last person had something, the first person's food was already cold. Unfortunately, the entire dessert was forgotten to be passed on to the service (so we were told, we had also pre-ordered desserts), so after clearing away and our second round of drinks, we investigated on our own and still came away empty-handed. Unfortunately, we had a neighboring appointment, so we didn't get the chance to try out anything sweet. Too bad! As we left, it turned out that the place was full, there was another party there who were also sitting close to each other AND there was only ONE waitress besides one person at the drinks counter. She handled the service with as good a face as she could, but we definitely would have drank more AND eaten more if she had visited us more often and asked. Also a shame! Otherwise it's quite comfortable, a bit cramped, but tidy. The toilets are also clean. Due to the location in the city center, parking is rather difficult on the side streets or on the parade ground, so you have to walk a little.

I went to this restaurant with my family on a Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The service seemed overwhelmed because of the full house. But not just that, as we then found out. The kitchen did not manage to prepare tables or even individual dishes in a timely manner. First there was the meat, followed by side dishes some time later. After a few questions, the filling side dish came too. This is also wrong. When I look at the reviews here, I wonder how anyone can give this 5 stars. Oh yes: before the owner accuses me of being drunk: I don't drink alcohol. I don't take drugs either. I am also mentally healthy. I will never be a guest here again and cannot recommend it.

Today my mother-in-law's birthday was to be celebrated with 8 people in the Mohrenkopf. We've heard a lot of good things. The website also looked promising. Admittedly, it was already packed at 5:30 p.m. However, we only got our food after 1 hour and 15 minutes. Three other tables had already finished eating and paid. The tables were already re-set when they started sending our food. In Hofbräuhaus style, only the main plates for three tables were delivered. After another 5 minutes, the first side dishes. The filling side dishes (some of which were taken incorrectly or assigned incorrectly) took another 5 minutes. Here the main plates with the meat and the sauce were only lukewarm (see photo). When we asked the waitress about it, she said succinctly that the duck doesn't get cold that quickly. Aha. In addition, I was "lucky" that I was able to eat my dish completely warm. Because my dish came a full 15 minutes after the others. By the way: the pepper pot is really quite spicy. It lives up to the name. When we were clearing away, the waitress responded to our criticism and cited a lack of staff in the kitchen as the reason. Now, however, I think that if you already know that you can't accommodate all guests when the house is full, you should reduce the number of tables. Unfortunately we won't be eating here again. Nevertheless, there was a lot of potential for a new local pub here. ANSWER to Mohrenkopf's comment: First of all, I am not MRS M.S. but MR M.S.. Then neither I nor anyone else in our company was drunk. In addition, the other guests showed their solidarity with us. They were just as uncomfortable as we were. Now, last but not least, it seems to be a ploy on your part to discredit criticizing guests. I would be happy to delete this addition and the second photo if you also correct your malicious allegation. Otherwise everything just stops and potential customers are forewarned. Have a nice evening anyway.

The food for our group was only brought after 1 hour and 15 minutes, unfortunately only in pieces, so the side dishes only arrived 15 minutes after the main part of the dish and therefore the dish was not complete. It has to be said that the food could have been good, but due to 3 wrong side dishes and an order that was only brought 40 minutes later after 3 requests, I can't recommend this restaurant. I think when it's empty it can give a different impression, but since no one said beforehand that there were problems, or that it would take longer, or apologized afterwards for the service or food, I won't be going there again .

Das Ambiente ist nichts besonderes. Es hat etwas den Charme eines Restaurants aus den 70er Jahren. Das Essen war sehr lecker, jedoch mit Verbesserungspotenzial. Ich hatte den Mohrenkopftop mit drei Sorten Filets. Das Hűhnchen und das Schwein waren sehr lecker und saftig. Leider war das Rind durch (well done) wodurch es etwas trocken und zäh war. Waiting time for the food was 1.5 hours. There were three of us. The waitress brought the food with a constant wait for all the ingredients so that after a long time everyone had their food. She served it to the table quite briskly, so that the food was almost next to the plate. There were no side dishes for my daughter and I's dishes. Not even a lettuce leaf with a tomato or anything. The meat was dry, the sauce was too salty, the schnitzel had no taste, but it was swimming in beetroot juice and on top of that there was a fried egg that wasn't ordered. Croquettes were left in the deep fryer for too long. The salad I ordered didn't come at all because it was simply forgotten. The waitress thought it was funny, my husband's birthday evening was over for us. With all due respect to the owner of this restaurant, THE MOHR FAILED ☹

Somehow we were very hungry. Well, to the Mohrenkopf, you don't know what to expect. Probably a grill with food that no one wants. Conclusion, it was a very special evening. It was just beautiful. I advise all tourists to stop here. It's a shame I don't live nearby. If the stay is called Kiel again, I'll dine at the Mohrenkopf.

Unfortunately, the restaurant has gone down a lot since last year. Our company Christmas dinner was an absolute failure where we waited about 1 hour for our drinks and 2 hours for the food (although only half of our employees received some). A year has now passed and we wanted to give the restaurant another chance. Unfortunately we had to wait 1.5 hours for our food today, without any explanation or apology from the service staff. A table that ordered 20 minutes after us received their food before us. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has also deteriorated. I ordered the duck in orange sauce. Unfortunately, the sauce was oversalted and somehow slimy (it pulled strings) and the duck was very dry. But the red cabbage was very tasty. All in all, a real shame. We won't be coming back again

Tried it out based on a tip: staff very friendly, very solid performance from the kitchen, it tasted very good and the portions were very plentiful. I would definitely go again!

Great restaurant, everything good...

We were in Kiel last week and had dinner there on both evenings. Even though the ambience isn't great and you have to be patient until you have something to eat, I can only recommend the restaurant. Those who cook here know their craft. Both fish and meat were cooked to perfection, the sauces were wonderfully creamy and very tasty. And even all the side dishes were homemade - respect in this day and age! Keep it up. You'll definitely see me again on my next visit to Kiel.

Unser Besuch am ganz frühen Abend war ein Desaster. Getränke: Bitte nocht nicht bestellen! Das war die Ausage nach ca. 20 Minuten Wartezeit. Nach 45 Minuten hatten wir dann endlich Getränke und Vorspeisen. Den Hauptgang erhielten wir nach 90 Minuten!!! Stammkunden, nach uns gekommen, wurden vorher bedient. Bedient waren wir dann auch und hatten nur noch eines im Sinn: Raus hier. Das Essen war höchstens Mittelmaß; einen weiteren Besuch von uns wird es nicht mehr geben.

Great, everything handmade!! It really tastes very good! A small restaurant that unfortunately hardly exists today. Excellent, freshly prepared food in the style of German home cooking. Clear recommendation, I would love to come back.
