Tasty Westphalian food, friendly service

As German as it gets! I don't think more German than this is possible. Cozy pub where you can also enjoy excellent German food. Of course schnitzel but really German like schweine haxe and as in the photo eisbein. Prices not at the low German level but at the higher Dutch level. Kitchen open late. A disadvantage is that they asked for a tip at checkout, the receipt also stated that the prices do not include tip. Not neat!

I haven't eaten so badly in a long time! Of the six dishes we ordered, everything was mass instead of classy. All dishes lacked seasoning. It didn't taste good at all. The chicken on my salad was dry and unseasoned. I had to look for the dressing. The ambience also has room for improvement. Our table for six turned out to be two 50 cm x 50 cm tables pushed close to a folding table of the same size. I'm 162cm tall and had trouble fitting my legs when sitting.

Anyone who wants to enjoy good German cuisine again. It's exactly right here. Whether pepperpotthast, liver or kale with fried potatoes and Mettwurst. Eating like mother's. Everything delicious. There is also good service and a rustic ambience inside. In summer everything is outside at the old market.

We have never eaten better pork shank in our lives, the meat falls off the bone and melts in your mouth, combined with great cabbage and potatoes. We highly recommend it

It was a very unpleasant experience. The waiter basically threw us out for no reason. At the entrance we were rudely told that we couldn't stay long if we didn't order food. We explained that we wanted to order several drinks. After about 30 minutes we wanted to order the second round, but the waiter refused for no reason at all. He reacted rudely and made a racist and inappropriate comment that something like that wasn't normal in Germany. But there was also a German person in our group. We have been here very often, but because of the waiter Abdul we will never come back. If you don't want a lovely evening ruined, definitely don't go there!

Excellent service and very tasty food

We came here to have a beer after dinner and it ruined our lovely evening. We were served by a waiter named Abdul. He was very rude from the start and even told us that we should just have a round of drinks and then go out as the table was for those who wanted food. After drinking a beer, we ordered a few more drinks from another waiter and he told us that he would bring the drinks. However, Abdul came to us and threw us out very roughly. He told us in Germany that we were on a first name basis and not on a first name basis and that he was a foreigner and my friend was a German :). My boyfriend comes here almost every week after work and he has never been served as poorly as he was today. I highly recommend this restaurant - train waiters or hire non-racist waiters.

Super cozy place. You enter a fairytale here. The first evening we had an unfriendly waiter. We went back the next day because I was curious about the vegetarian dish with dumplings. This one was to die for. And this time we had a very friendly waiter.

Dear Zum alten Markt team, we were guests with you yesterday afternoon and ate kale and market crusts. I noticed two things: the mustard with the kale sausage was not sword mustard, but mustard in plastic portion bags. Not appealing at all! The second thing I noticed was that the beer was priced at €3.90 and €5.00 for 0.3l and 0.4l, but €4.00 and €5.10 were charged. That doesn't work at all! Please urgently correct the price on the card and spend swords mustard or remove it from the card! That's why I only gave you an overall rating of 2/5 stars.

My husband and I arrived to eat at 2:30 pm We shared a starter and a main course and were satisfied. The starter is a salt bread with raw meat and chopped raw onion, which we found delicious and the waiter informed us that it was typical of the Dortmund region. For starters, the pork knuckle accompanied by mashed potatoes and sauerkraut was very tasty. Service was excellent and fast.

In the run-up to Christmas you can eat delicious goose here. But don't forget to book a table in advance. Then everything works.

Typical German food place, with delicious dishes, what to say about this type of cuisine, which I can't find its point. Normal service and price.

Very disappointing! We have eaten well here several times, and we always came back. Since the last time more than a year ago, however, everything seems to have changed. New management? We can only guess. The food was no longer culinary as before, and guests were snapped at rudely by the waiter who - how surprising - begged for a tip when we paid the bill. The schnitzels were not fried crispy but wrapped in a greasy mess. The fried potatoes, too, they were not well done and seemed to be made of a soft-boiling potato species. Tasteless vegetables and watery sauerkraut completed this bad lunch experience.

This is my favorite restaurant in Dortmund. I have always eaten delicious things here. But today I got very bad service. I arrived at around 1:00 p.m. and ordered knuckle and beer. At 2 p.m. the waitress wanted to kick us out because of a so-called random reservation. When paying, she asked for a tip. This is incredible. I haven't even finished my beer yet. She says there will be reservation later. But when we arrived, there was just a sign on the other table that said reserved at 2 p.m. The first time I had such a bad experience was in this restaurant. I have always tipped but not this time!

Incompetent staff but still nice food

Right in the city center, so good location. Very busy restaurant, it got very crowded after 5 p.m. Loving furnishings. I was sitting upstairs, there was nothing free downstairs. Fast and polite service (although full and therefore many orders). Had Thier beer and appropriate for the season, kale with curly sausage and fried potatoes (getting hungry again 😋). Reasonably priced. I can therefore recommend the restaurant. It's certainly not a fancy 5* restaurant, but that wouldn't be my thing either...

I wanted to eat in a traditional German restaurant, and was 100% satisfied! Delicious food, I had probably the best goulash soup of my life and the pork knuckle was delicious and just melting away from the bone. Really warm traditional German vibes. We visited early and were lucky enough to find a spot, because as I realized later looking around me, all of the tables were constantly full! Very friendly and helpful waiter as well. Totally recommended.

Very attractive location of the restaurant. Great atmosphere and atmosphere. You can see that it is an old restaurant with some problems. Typical German pub atmosphere. A lot of people and often no free places. The prices are right. You can pay by card or cash. There is a toilet available on site on the lowest level. The restaurant has tables on the ground floor and upstairs. The food was so-so. The schnitzel is small and extremely fatty after frying. Very good beers. We asked for the bill twice and had to wait a long time for it. When it comes to food, I only recommend a great set of salads with a very good dip and beer. The potatoes were burnt and the onion in them was actually burnt. Probably because we didn't speak German, we received lower quality food. At the next table, all the sets ordered after us looked much better. Pity.

In my opinion the best knuckle in Dortmund. There was also very tasty sauerkraut with mashed potatoes. Great price/performance ratio. The only room for improvement this evening was that the food could have been a bit hotter. Otherwise there was nothing to complain about. Therefore, I absolutely recommend it.

Quaint German restaurant with very friendly staff and very tasty food. Absolute recommendation!

So...what can I say? So when I was at the Christmas market I went to the culinary window and ordered kale with Mettwurst in the classic way. And what can I say? It tastes amazing 😋. Nice and hot and freshly prepared and simply delicious ☺️. It's worth a detour, but you might have to wait a bit longer, especially at the Christmas market. But definitely worth a visit 😊 I'll be back.

Great restaurant in a rustic style. The food, the staff are simply top and world class. This will be our home business when we are back in Dortmund for the dog show. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good home cooking. I'm already looking forward to my next visit on May 25th.

Rustic pub atmosphere meets star cuisine. If you don't let the external appearance irritate you and get involved in the brewery charm, you'll get to know employees here for whom "Service Desert Germany" is a foreign word. By the time your order is served, it should be clear to even the last doubter that you will not only be full here but will also enjoy every bite. I always look forward to a visit!!

Most German bar you can find in the city. You expect more of these types of bars in Germany, but unfortunately Dortmund has little to offer where German culture is clearly noticeable. That's why it gets 5 stars.

Unfortunately we were disappointed. When you order a crispy knuckle you expect it too. Meat itself was good but not what I ordered. I don't feel like having to discuss this with the waiter either. I was told that if the knuckle was supposed to be crispy, the kitchen wouldn't be able to do that and everything would be black. Sorry, but then you either have to write it differently on the menu or show the chef how it works. Unfortunately there was no offer of apology at all. Nothing came apart from an inappropriate reaction from the cellar. Personally, I am disappointed because the restaurant was actually recommended. In my opinion it was a disaster and I personally wouldn't recommend the place. Very nice place, beer was OK too, but what I experienced there today was a bad joke.

Formerly a Dortmund cult restaurant... today convenience food: ready-made schnitzel from a bag or vegetables from a can. The restaurant also does not respond to written requests. Therefore, preferably no more stars for the food. Too bad.

Als wir am späten Nachmittag einkehrten war das Lokal sehr gut besucht und der Lärmpegel demzufolge hoch. Die Kellner waren unfreundlich, wirkten gestresst und überfordert. Auf unsere Speisen (Westfalenknödel und Himmel und Erde), die man in einer durchschnittlichen Kantine in besserer Qualität bekommt, haben wir 50 Minuten warten müssen. Fazit: Das war ein Reinfall...

I ate my first salt cake here as a small child. Now I'm 55 and it still tastes good 👍😎

Yesterday we sat in the “Alter Markt” outdoor area in the most beautiful sunshine. The waiter was slightly overwhelmed, but not rude. We ate very tasty home-style food. (Dortmunder Rosenkranz with bacon fried potatoes, Wiener Schnitzel with bacon fried potatoes). The fried potatoes were a bit too greasy for me. The atmosphere on the Old Market was very pleasant.

Meh, too many people, got wrong order, the salad was old.

Tasty food and drinks. Very nice to sit with friends and/or family. Service leaves something to be desired, don't expect restaurant service. They give everything to you, which is a bit strange if you're not used to that.

It was a beautiful evening. The restaurant was busy, but we were lucky to get a table. The staff was friendly and was always around for new orders. The portions are very generous, so you don't have to worry about leaving hungry. Even though the schnitzel wasn't 100% tender and the mashed potatoes also had their "own" texture. All in all, I would go back despite everything.

Today is a beautiful Saturday, my friends and I visited the old market, it was great as we were served by a young Asian man with glasses, he was very cheerful, warm and very attentive.
