Very cozy, fast and friendly service, delicious food, would gladly come again!

First off, the food is fantastic! But unfortunately, it's only really suitable for walk-ins. Good German cuisine, very tasty, and good prices – no complaints there. The service in the restaurant was also excellent, but the preparation was a disaster. The restaurant is unreachable by phone for days, and emails sent via recorded message go unanswered for days. When you finally do get through to someone on the phone, they're extremely curt, and you can't make a reservation for weeks. They don't even ask for the day or time to try and help; they just brush you off with a "try it that way!" So, the restaurant is clearly mostly reserved for walk-ins. – But I showed up with six people, including a toddler, on the off-chance! Planning a meal here is practically impossible and quite off-putting. The ambiance, however, was and still is actually great. Very open and rustic, yet someone had the bright idea to ruin it all with a gigantic TV on the wall, naturally showing football. The result is now a kind of pub without the crowds, offering upscale cuisine!?!?

The meat dish was especially impressive, with a crispy exterior and tender interior – perfectly prepared. The goulash was rich in flavor, beautifully seasoned, and harmonized wonderfully with side dishes like potatoes. The local produce was fresh, crisp, and well-balanced. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel well taken care of. Overall, the restaurant exudes a sense of tradition, history, and culinary authenticity. For anyone in Dortmund who wants to enjoy authentic German home cooking and a rustic, cozy atmosphere, Zum Alten Markt is a clear recommendation. I sat outside on a sunny autumn day. The chairs were comfortable, and the service was good. I enjoyed the classics, salt cake and pilsner: excellent! And at a fair price.

The food was simply superb. We sat on the second floor and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere.

Great restaurant, good, home-style food. Heaven and Earth, schnitzel, and liver, all excellent. Very tasty and reasonable portions. Also a very fresh, delicious Aperol Spritz. We had a great time with our six people and would love to come back.

Quaint, long-established, and very centrally located! Large outdoor area right on the market square, always packed in the summer. Good service, home-style cooking. Definitely an institution in Dortmund.

We went there after returning from a trade show, the restaurant was full but after a 10/15 minute wait, we were able to sit down and order. The service was fast, the meal was excellent as well as being plentiful and the carafe of wine was good. A pleasant time.

The food order takes too long to come out, but other than that, everything was fine. However, the fact that the order takes 1-1.30 hours to arrive is a big minus for me.

We were there today for the first and last time. The service was completely overwhelmed and unprofessional. All guests who dared to wave or call for service (some of the guests I observed waited half an hour or more for their bill) were rudely scolded by the waitress. Advice to the owner: Ban this gentleman to the potato cellar. Hire more waiters or offer fewer tables.

The complete package is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is cozy, and the service is really friendly and prompt. The restrooms are clean, and the gentleman who keeps them clean and tidy is also very friendly! We come here quite often these days because it simply doesn't work as well anywhere else.

The service was prompt and friendly, but the food was unfortunately only mediocre. I had the Dortmunder Kringel, which was very tasty. The side dishes, according to the menu, were fried potatoes and coleslaw. The fried potatoes were more steamed than roasted, and the coleslaw was a ready-made product from a large bucket. For the price, I had expected at least fresh coleslaw. The decor is quaint and beautiful, but the noise level was extremely high due to the many guests in a small space, the loud background music, and, to top it all off, the TV was on. The waiters running back and forth created an even more hectic atmosphere in the place, making it impossible to eat your food in peace.

I was only here briefly and unfortunately didn't have much time. I tried a Dortmund beer (Thier Pils) and enjoyed it very much. The restaurant has a pleasant and cozy atmosphere. Many people were eating there, and you could see they were having a good time. The prices on the menu are reasonable. The service was fast and friendly. If I had more time, I would happily eat here. Overall, a very nice place to sit, have a drink, and chat.

Everything is very nice here, but when you want to pay your bill, I mean, I always give money for drinks if I'm happy with the service, and that's always the case here. But when you want to pay with a card, it immediately shows you how much of a drink you want to give, and I don't like that very much. Otherwise, everything's great.

Very authentic restaurant in Dortmund

Service was prompt. However, the Westphalian dumplings with mushrooms were disappointing—the dumplings were okay, but the mushrooms were smothered in a Maggi mush. What a shame!

This is the third time we have been to this restaurant. The drinks menu offers a beer combination with 8 toasts. The whole thing is a joke!!! Every time we have been told that it isn't available today. What kind of business practices is this? I will report this to the trade supervisory authority so that clarity is finally put on record about this scam. We drive 30km there and 30km back every time. This is highly dubious. A clear answer has never been given. In the 70s and 80s this was a recommended address. Why are more and more guests staying away from Dortmund? This is a prime example of that. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!! There are other, better places that also deliver what is on the drinks menu!!!!!! As a Dortmunder, I am ashamed of my guests who had to experience this. I praise Bavaria and the Sauerland. Dortmund is destroying itself with a city center like this!!!!

If you visit Dortmund in the Ruhr region, you can't miss Zum Alten Markt, located directly on the Old Market in front of the famous Bläserbrunnen. Quality food and excellent Pils beer at fair prices... I recommend it!!

I think this was the best German restaurant I've ever eaten at. From goulash to knuckle of pork and schnitzel: 12/10. Justin's service was also particularly good; he did an incredible job. Very personable and must really love his job. Highly recommended 🙌🏻

Very tasty food. The best gravy ever. We got a large table for seven people. Our orders were taken quickly. Despite it being a match day in Dortmund, the food was served very quickly and at the same time. We'd love to come back, but why pay for the toilet? The beer was very tasty. Three of us came here for dinner. We had potato soup as a starter and, for main courses, brewery schnitzel, Berlin liver, and a Viennese-style schnitzel for the child. The service was friendly, fast, and professional. The dishes arrived quickly and were tasty. However, it was noticeable that many of the ingredients were pre-prepared. The portion sizes are certainly sufficient. The menu features regional dishes in a composition optimized for quick preparation. The soup was reminiscent of home-cooked food. The main courses were more touristy. The liver was rather dry, and the schnitzel should be described as "breaded" rather than "Viennese style." But this is more common in Germany and should not be criticized. Basically, a good and pleasant restaurant in a central location.

I was there during the week in the evening and had a lovely meal outside. The tables were spacious, so there was plenty of room for several people. The service was very good and prompt – especially one middle-aged waiter, unfortunately, without a name badge. The food was perfectly fine for the price and lived up to expectations. You can practically drink all the major local beers here... If you like English-style pubs, you'll feel right at home. I'm not a fan of this one, as it's just dust and old things hanging around, nothing more. It's busy on weekends from 11:00 AM. It's worth a visit, even if only for a quick Brinkhoff's No. 1, and the place has its own atmosphere.

Great steak house. High-quality meats and side dishes were a pleasant surprise in a touristy central plaza. Lots of Germans smoke, and they do it during their meals a lot, including parties with children. We had to have a meal inside an empty and warm restaurant instead of enjoying nice weather and a meal on a restaurant patio full of smoking people.

Restaurant serving German cuisine in the center of Dortmund. It's located in a square and has a large outdoor terrace. We've been there several times, and depending on the waiter/waitress, you'll get service more or less quickly. When you go to pay, you can tip more or less generously, which ranges from 5 to 15%. Or, if the service isn't excellent, don't tip at all. The food is delicious, and the terrace is ideal for relaxing.

Very impressed! I'll start with the food: I had the pork knuckle with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, and it was perfect😋. The meat was tender and easily pulled off the bone, the sauerkraut was well drained, and the mashed potatoes were nice and fluffy. One downside was that my friend's fried potatoes were a bit too salty. The service is fast and attentive, paying attention to each guest. The location is ideal, right by the market, and the outdoor seating is very quiet. I definitely recommend it!

A very quaint restaurant with Westphalian home cooking (for those unsure, they also serve schnitzel 😉). A lovely terrace overlooking the market under umbrellas, but it's a bit darker inside. Local beer. 'Himmel un Erd' was fantastic. Restrooms are new and clean.

A charming restaurant with exceptionally friendly service – the waiter spoke Polish – really well, which surprised us, as he's not Polish. The schnitzel was very well-done, the potatoes were perfectly baked, and the salad was fresh. The sausage was very good, with the same toppings as above. The lemonade was very good and refreshing, and the Hovels beer was also good. I recommend it.
