The place to eat in Dortmund!! The staff is very friendly and kind. I recommend the venison stew. The atmosphere is local and touristy.

Dear Zum alten Markt team, we were your guests yesterday afternoon and ate kale and market crusts. I noticed two things: the mustard with the kale sausage was not sword mustard, but mustard in plastic portion bags. Not appealing at all! The second thing I noticed was that the beer was priced at €3.90 and €5.00 for 0.3l and 0.4l, but €4.00 and €5.10 were charged. That doesn't work at all! Please urgently correct the price on the card and spend swords mustard or remove it from the card! That's why I only gave you an overall rating of 2/5 stars.

In the run-up to Christmas you can eat delicious goose here. But don't forget to book a table in advance. Then everything works.

My husband and I arrived to eat at 2:30 pm We shared a starter and a main course and were satisfied. The starter is a salt bread with raw meat and chopped raw onion, which we found delicious and the waiter informed us that it was typical of the Dortmund region. For starters, the pork knuckle accompanied by mashed potatoes and sauerkraut was very tasty. Service was excellent and fast.

Very disappointing! We have eaten well here several times, and we always came back. Since the last time more than a year ago, however, everything seems to have changed. New management? We can only guess. The food was no longer culinary as before, and guests were snapped at rudely by the waiter who - how surprising - begged for a tip when we paid the bill. The schnitzels were not fried crispy but wrapped in a greasy mess. The fried potatoes, too, they were not well done and seemed to be made of a soft-boiling potato species. Tasteless vegetables and watery sauerkraut completed this bad lunch experience.

This is my favorite restaurant in Dortmund. I have always eaten delicious things here. But today I got very bad service. I arrived at around 1:00 p.m. and ordered knuckle and beer. At 2 p.m. the waitress wanted to kick us out because of a so-called random reservation. When paying, she asked for a tip. This is incredible. I haven't even finished my beer yet. She says there will be reservation later. But when we arrived, there was just a sign on the other table that said reserved at 2 p.m. The first time I had such a bad experience was in this restaurant. I have always tipped but not this time!

Incompetent staff but still nice food

Right in the city center, so good location. Very busy restaurant, it got very crowded after 5 p.m. Loving furnishings. I was sitting upstairs, there was nothing free downstairs. Fast and polite service (although full and therefore many orders). Had Thier beer and appropriate for the season, kale with curly sausage and fried potatoes (getting hungry again 😋). Reasonably priced. I can therefore recommend the restaurant. It's certainly not a fancy 5* restaurant, but that wouldn't be my thing either...

I wanted to eat in a traditional German restaurant, and was 100% satisfied! Delicious food, I had probably the best goulash soup of my life and the pork knuckle was delicious and just melting away from the bone. Really warm traditional German vibes. We visited early and were lucky enough to find a spot, because as I realized later looking around me, all of the tables were constantly full! Very friendly and helpful waiter as well. Totally recommended.

Very attractive location of the restaurant. Great atmosphere and atmosphere. You can see that it is an old restaurant with some problems. Typical German pub atmosphere. A lot of people and often no free places. The prices are right. You can pay by card or cash. There is a toilet available on site on the lowest level. The restaurant has tables on the ground floor and upstairs. The food was so-so. The schnitzel is small and extremely fatty after frying. Very good beers. We asked for the bill twice and had to wait a long time for it. When it comes to food, I only recommend a great set of salads with a very good dip and beer. The potatoes were burnt and the onion in them was actually burnt. Probably because we didn't speak German, we received lower quality food. At the next table, all the sets ordered after us looked much better. Pity.

In my opinion the best knuckle in Dortmund. There was also very tasty sauerkraut with mashed potatoes. Great price/performance ratio. The only room for improvement this evening was that the food could have been a bit hotter. Otherwise there was nothing to complain about. Therefore, I absolutely recommend it.

Quaint German restaurant with very friendly staff and very tasty food. Absolute recommendation!

So...what can I say? So when I was at the Christmas market I went to the culinary window and ordered kale with Mettwurst in the classic way. And what can I say? It tastes amazing 😋. Nice and hot and freshly prepared and simply delicious ☺️. It's worth a detour, but you might have to wait a bit longer, especially at the Christmas market. But definitely worth a visit 😊 I'll be back.

Great restaurant in a rustic style. The food, the staff are simply top and world class. This will be our home business when we are back in Dortmund for the dog show. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good home cooking. I'm already looking forward to my next visit on May 25th.

Although there was a lot going on (lots of football fans there), we were served very friendly and the food tasted very good. Our expectations were truly exceeded.

Rustic pub atmosphere meets star cuisine. If you don't let the external appearance irritate you and get involved in the brewery charm, you'll get to know employees here for whom "Service Desert Germany" is a foreign word. By the time your order is served, it should be clear to even the last doubter that you will not only be full here but will also enjoy every bite. I always look forward to a visit!!

Most German bar you can find in the city. You expect more of these types of bars in Germany, but unfortunately Dortmund has little to offer where German culture is clearly noticeable. That's why it gets 5 stars.

Unfortunately we were disappointed. When you order a crispy knuckle you expect it too. Meat itself was good but not what I ordered. I don't feel like having to discuss this with the waiter either. I was told that if the knuckle was supposed to be crispy, the kitchen wouldn't be able to do that and everything would be black. Sorry, but then you either have to write it differently on the menu or show the chef how it works. Unfortunately there was no offer of apology at all. Nothing came apart from an inappropriate reaction from the cellar. Personally, I am disappointed because the restaurant was actually recommended. In my opinion it was a disaster and I personally wouldn't recommend the place. Very nice place, beer was OK too, but what I experienced there today was a bad joke.

Formerly a Dortmund cult restaurant... today convenience food: ready-made schnitzel from a bag or vegetables from a can. The restaurant also does not respond to written requests. Therefore, preferably no more stars for the food. Too bad.

I had a beer at Schwein Haxen and it was very delicious.

The price was cheap and I ate Schweinhaxen and sausage and it was really good. The beer is also very delicious.

Yesterday we sat in the “Alter Markt” outdoor area in the most beautiful sunshine. The waiter was slightly overwhelmed, but not rude. We ate very tasty home-style food. (Dortmunder Rosenkranz with bacon fried potatoes, Wiener Schnitzel with bacon fried potatoes). The fried potatoes were a bit too greasy for me. The atmosphere on the Old Market was very pleasant.

We were thrilled. Beautiful, rustic old restaurant furnished with a lot of attention to detail. Attentive staff. Food was great.

Tasty food and drinks. Very nice to sit with friends and/or family. Service leaves something to be desired, don't expect restaurant service. They give everything to you, which is a bit strange if you're not used to that.

It was a beautiful evening. The restaurant was busy, but we were lucky to get a table. The staff was friendly and was always around for new orders. The portions are very generous, so you don't have to worry about leaving hungry. Even though the schnitzel wasn't 100% tender and the mashed potatoes also had their "own" texture. All in all, I would go back despite everything.

Today is a beautiful Saturday, my friends and I visited the old market, it was great as we were served by a young Asian man with glasses, he was very cheerful, warm and very attentive. He served very well, we are very satisfied with him We are very satisfied with this visit, we will definitely come again next time. Everything is perfect!!!

Food was tasty, came almost quickly, busy terrace around 12:00 many people had a drink, mainly German beer. The only downside was the service of the Asian boy with glasses, I think Vietnamese, he reminded me twice during checkout to give a tip, while a wasp had fallen into my table companion's orange juice (barely drank it) and he didn't even wanted to offer a new drink or take it off the bill, but need a spoon to scoop it out? How ridiculous he thinks, as if he were still going to drink from the glass. He had still given change back at the end with an attitude. Luckily I'll never come back here again!

Unfortunately we didn't get any places. It's a shame we would have liked to have been a guest. But that also means that the pub is quite popular.😉👍

When paying I was forced to tip 10%. The service was poor - I was ignored when ordering and had to find someone else to place my order.

The food was incredibly tasty, fresh and quickly prepared. Despite strong sunshine, none of Hövelhof's oversized parasols could be opened because other guests objected.

We had to wait 50 minutes for our drinks. The food wasn't great either, it was cold and not well seasoned.

The two of us went there in the evening and the service was very friendly! Food came very quickly. Unfortunately my baked potato was only lukewarm, but delicious. There was also Dortmund salt cake. We'd love to come back.

UNACCEPTABLE!!! 19/09/2024 at around 23:00 we were verbally harassed by a guy working there just because we weren't German and obviously couldn't speak the language. We visited Dortmund for Intertabak and we are obviously not locals. When we chose a table we were told by the same guy that we need to leave because in 20-30 mins they are closing. After confirming with him that we don't mind and we just want a quick beer we were "allowed" to sit in. At 23:05 and while we were placing our order the moment we asked for a big bottle of water we were told the following " What's going wrong with you, I just told you that we're closing so you won't have time to drink it". At the end, we said to the very rude waiter that "for your information you're rude" and all he did was make a sarcastic comment in German and leave. Negative and insulting experience and won't visit this hostile place again! Try to avoid this place if you are not German!

The food was really excellent and I enjoyed it very much. However, I had an unpleasant situation with an employee. I understand that my behavior of raising my fingers may have been inappropriate as I am new to Germany and do not yet fully understand the local customs. I would like to apologize for my misunderstanding. However, it would be helpful if your team could show a little more patience with new guests and kindly point out local customs. This would make the experience more pleasant for many visitors. Overall the food was great and I hope the service is a little friendlier in the future.
