We came across the restaurant by chance via a YouTube video and just thought: we have to go there. No sooner said than done, we easily reserved it via Opentable and arrived by public transport, as it is only a 5-minute walk from the Südbahnhof. We were greeted very nicely and the various menus were explained to us. I chose the Wagyumenu, one of my best decisions ever. First we got a colorful mix of appetizers (there's something for everyone here), then a salad and then fried shrimp. The absolute highlights in my opinion were the sushi and the Wagyu steak. One taste explosion after another, sensational! Afterwards there was a platter with various dessert bites, not everything was to my taste, but everything was excellent. Finally, a sake as recommended by the house, very tasty. The price may hurt, but only once when paying. The experience of taste and service lasts forever. I can only recommend everyone to visit this temple of pleasure, it's worth it.

Food is the best Japanese food in Frankfurt in my opinion. The chef knows his craft and the food is on the same level as a star restaurant. However, I can understand why it doesn't get enough of a star here: service is not good. You have to refill your own drinks, the sake accompaniment was forgotten during a course, that's completely ok for a middle class bar. For 400 euros for two people it's simply not enough. No air conditioning, the air in the restaurant is too stuffy and warm in the summer, you could invest in air conditioning here. Toilets not clean and old, could also be renovated. So eat 1+ with a star, the rest is satisfactory. So there is room for improvement, the food is great!

Eating was an experience and tasted great. Of course the whole thing has its price, but it was worth every cent.

The visit to the Sakai was an experience. The food is of the highest quality, perfectly prepared by sushi master Hiro Sakai. Watching Sakai San work is simply remarkable. The service was also very good. The timing between courses was good and a lot of effort was put into explaining. Of course it comes at a price, but it's worth every penny. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone for a special evening.

Not bad, but not worth the price. The 7-course omakase menu had its ups and downs, I would classify the Wagyu menu as a failed experiment overall, and the sushi/meat combination is not recommended. Of the individual courses, most were quite good and some were quite wonderful, such as the fried tofu, the fried oyster, the kadayif-coated beef, the tuna sushi and the chateaubriand, which was really of excellent quality. All in all, the dishes were often uninspired and sometimes not perfectly prepared. I wouldn't normally mention that as a negative thing, because that's the case in most restaurants in Frankfurt, and I still enjoy going there again and again, with the big difference that I only pay a fraction of the price for food of the same quality . At 450 euros for two people you can expect something much better. And then it's no longer okay if the service is very nice and helpful, but obviously underqualified.

Exceptionally good; the best Japanese restaurant I have ever eaten at. We had the 7-course menu with wine accompaniment, and every course was a pleasure.

Hiro Sakai is a master of his craft who demonstrates a comprehensive, high standard in his work and for the entire operation of the restaurant. Originally, I was there for Omakase. But in the end, I had the choice between three menus, the Omakase, a vegan option or one with Wagyu as the central ingredient. I opted for the Wagyu menu, along with an excellent recommendation for sake and, at the end, a Japanese whisky. And what can I say? It was one of those menus that you wish would never end. Considering the hospitality I received, the personal touch Chef Hiro Sakai gave the event, and the absolutely reasonable price, it was a perfect evening. An evening that I will remember fondly for a long time to come - it was a privilege for me.

Der Abend in diesem Restaurant war ein Erlebnis. Jeder der Sushi liebt sollte in dieses Restaurant einmal erlebt haben. Wie das Essen angerichtet ist war eine Augenweide. Aber auch der Geschmack war phänomenal. Ich war vor kurzem 3 Monate in Japan und war auch dort in vielen Sushi Restaurant, aber was Hiro Sakai aus dem Fisch und Reis zaubert ist von einem anderen Stern. Man merkt wirklich dass er sein ganzes Leben diesem Handwerk widmet. Und das Ambiente war wirklich schön. Ich war am Counter und konnte ihm zuschauen wie er die Gerichte anrichtet. Ich kann den empfohlenen Sake von Herr Sakai und den Japanischen Weisswein sehr empfehlen. Beides passt perfekt zum Sushi. Und die Zeit verfliegt in diesem Restaurant. Wir waren um 18:00 hereingekommen und plötzlich war es 21:00 Uhr. Eine absolute Empfehlung.

Unbelievable experience with both the food and service. This is my third time eating at Sakai and I feel like each time is the first; it’s unique, welcoming, and the food is exquisite. If I could rate this restaurant above 5 stars, it would get 10. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s an experience overall. Hiro is wonderful, welcoming, and clearly excellent at what he offers. We can’t wait to visit again.

Eigentlich schreibe ich so gut wie gar keine Bewertungen, aber ich muss ich eine Ausnahme machen. Wir waren gestern hier essen und ich muss sagen, wir sind immer noch begeistert. Das Essen war hervorragend. Wir wussten gar nicht, dass Tofu und Suppe sooo gut schmecken können. Der Service war super freundlich und das Ambiente sehr gemütlich. Man hat sich sehr wohl gefühlt. Man kann sagen das Gesamtpaket war rund um stimmig. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder.

Für das Geld kann man wesentlich besser essen gehen.

We had an exceptional experience at Sakai. The ambience and the setting are perfect for a special occasion or a meaningful quality time with loved ones. The staff was extremely polite, friendly and professional, even when we were taking our time to enjoy the dinner course, they had the courtesy to keep the restaurant open much longer than their regular working hours just for us, so we could truly enjoy the evening with no rush. The omakase menu is phenomenal, with top quality ingredients, gorgeous serving and perfectly balanced dishes. Worth every penny. Truly, a memorable experience.

Perfect place to celebrate special occasions. We had the Omakase 7-course menu and it was a coordinated taste experience in every course. (In hindsight, 6 courses would definitely have been enough) The atmosphere is very nice and pleasant and the staff is super accommodating and friendly. They put a lot of effort into giving explanations about the food. At the counter you can watch the sushi master preparing it. The tuna here is to die for both flambéed and raw, as are all the other sushi. It was a very nice experience and definitely worth more than one visit!

Wir haben sn unserem Hochzeitstag dort gegessen. Vom ersten bis zum letzten Gang waren sowohl das Omakase, als auch das Wagyu Menü einfach sehr gut. Jeder Gang war auf dem Punkt, ansprechend angerichtet und die Weinbegleitung hat alles noch abgerundet. Wir werden auf jeden Fall wieder hingehen!

Good Japanese restaurant with high quality cuisine. The restaurant is located in the basement (cellar) and has a nice interior. Far from perfect (Michelin level) was the service, which was friendly, but for this price segment it didn't know the menu well, didn't clean up spills on the table, and forgot that we were celebrating a birthday and wrote "Happy Birthday" at dessert wanted to have (this was agreed upon directly before the meal).

Chef Hiro dedicates his life and soul to cook with passion and high skills. I lived in Japan for some years, and Sakai’s dinner, is like being back in Japan. Excellent! Cannot wait until I get the opportunity to visit again!

The restaurant has been one of the best Japanese in the city for years and I can only say that that is absolutely true. Starting at the entrance you are greeted with the usual Japanese hospitality and escorted to the table. You receive the respective menu and it is explained accordingly. A sommelier is available and can also help you choose the right wine or you can choose the wine to accompany the menu, which is also great. The 7 course menu is actually a lot with two main courses, but it's worth it every time. From start to finish the meal is a great experience. I really enjoy coming here and can only recommend it to everyone.

Service staff are silly, helpless, haphazard and actually low-level 😕 Customer orientation... you haven't gotten to know it there either.😐 Apparently their cell phones and themselves and each other are more important than the customers. If you just want to eat something delicious and have a Japanese flavor and don't care about anything else, this is definitely not the place for you. However, if you want to enjoy good food and special service, you might want to ask yourself what you expect from a "special" service 😅 .... By the way: Who actually prepared the sushi there while the sushi master was in Singapore? 🤔

Food is amazing, nice service, comfortable atmosphere

Die Speisen sind auf höchstem Niveau. Gestört hat uns die Musik, die viel zu laut war und unpassend für dieses Ambiente. Auch die Toiletten werden vernachlässigt, gefährliche Stufe zu den Toiletten und somit für gehbehinderte Menschen nicht gut. Schlechte Beleuchtung im Eingangsbereich, die Stufen sind in der Dunkelheit schlecht zu sehen.

However, despite the price, it was worth every penny. An unforgettable culinary experience that is definitely one of the best in Frankfurt.

It is the best place for Japanese cuisine in Frankfurt or Hesse. We felt very comfortable and were really spoiled with the food, both in terms of taste and aesthetics. /LP

This restaurant has everything you need for a high-end restaurant. Still, it doesn't feel overpriced at all, so I would recommend it. The Wagyu beef course I ordered this time is for a limited time only and the menu changes every two months. If you still want to try the wagyu beef course, it seems that if you make a reservation in advance, they may prepare it for you. There were almost no Japanese people in the restaurant, and many ordered the omakase course. They have a great selection of sake and wine, so both people who want to enjoy alcohol and food will be able to enjoy it. There are two parking spaces behind the building. It seems like first come first served.

The menu is perfectly coordinated and every dish is a little taste explosion. The sushi is some of the best I've eaten. It's just fun every time and you notice that true masters are at work who are passionate about it. The atmosphere is personal and friendly.

Wir waren mit einer Gruppe von 5 Personen zu Besuch. Die Einrichtung wirkt etwas abgelebt und der Service war eher nicht japanisch perfekt. Preise für die Qualität der Speisen hoffnungslos überzogen. Auszugsweise beim Sushi, welches wirklich nichts Besonders war (nach mehreren Japan Reisen wissen wir, wovon wir reden) bis zum sehnendurchzogenen Wagyu, welches so bissfest war wie ein Rumpsteak einer deutschen Milchkuh. Die Anmerkung, dass das Fleisch qualitativ enttäuschend war, wurde völlig übergangen. Wir können die Michelin Empfehlung mitnichten nachvollziehen.

I was given a voucher for the Sakai for my birthday. We redeemed it this evening. It was a very successful evening. The welcome was very warm, the service was perfect, the atmosphere was very stylish and of course the food was so delicious. We chose the 7 course menu with Japanese wine. An absolute pleasure. The dishes were explained at the table. If you want to have a successful evening with very good food, this is the right place for you.

Ranziger, dh nicht mehr frischer und müffelnder Fisch in jedem Gang, vor allem im Sashimi. Wir haben es probiert, dann zurückgehen lassen, trotzdem wurde uns der volle Preis berechnet, das finde ich eigentlich am Schlimmsten. Kein Wort des Bedauerns oder Entgegenkommens. Der Fisch war echt eklig. Schade, die beiden Male vorher war es ausgezeichnet. Jetzt werden wir ganz sicher nicht mehr dort hingehen.

The two of us were at the restaurant “The Sakai” on December 27th, 2023 at 6 p.m. At this point we were still able to park in one of the two parking spaces in the backyard. There are also sufficient parking spaces in front of the restaurant and in the surrounding area. We were also impressed by the entrance; in the darkness it looked quite impressive. Of course, we had to capture it visually. As we walked down the stairs, the door was opened and we were greeted in a very friendly manner. My wife's coat was taken away and taken to the cloakroom. We were then escorted to our place, which was through another door in the form of a “curtain”. Everyone here also greeted us very friendly. We immediately felt right at home and took our place at the counter in front of the sushi master Hiro Sakai. The waitress who handed us the drinks menu and the menu for the evening was as friendly as it was attentive. Another very nice man behind the counter always handed us the drinks promptly after we ordered and always refilled them in good time. We decided on the 7 course menu, which was currently available for the Christmas season. The 7 course menu was an absolute art, we were very impressed by such great craftsmanship that was offered to us there. The menu was an absolute harmony for the palate from the first to the last course. The food was explained to us course by course and we had the opportunity to learn a lot about the high-quality ingredients from Japanese cuisine. We, as absolute Japan lovers who have already tried many restaurants in Japan, are totally impressed by all the dishes that were served to us. The quality was unique! I have never enjoyed such great food. The trip from the Black Forest to the restaurant was worth it and we will definitely come back. The ambience is so unique and fits the restaurant perfectly. It's all so beautiful. Totally lovely people with a perfect restaurant. We would also like to thank you again for your hospitality. Mr. Hiro Sakai is a great person and cook. We will definitely try out the restaurants at “The Sakai” on our next vacation to Japan. Thank you also for the sweets in the form of sushi and the great pictures we were able to take. Our conclusion is clear: “The Sakai” brings Japanese cuisine to Germany and impresses with its great food and service! 4.8 stars are more than justified. We give 5 stars. The food quality was just not as high as I have experienced in other Japanese restaurants. I believe it’s overpriced for what you get.

First of all: we were really very disappointed with this restaurant. We had the 7-course menu including wine accompaniment for a total of €415. Unfortunately, the food and wine didn't do justice to the price at all... some dishes were only lukewarm, overcooked or simply not "special". (By the way, 6 courses are definitely enough) But what actually ruined our evening only happened after we had paid. After a very generous tip for what had been very attentive service to date, the sommelier came to us again and kindly offered us a nightcap. My partner didn't really want to, but the sommelier insisted for better digestion and we gratefully accepted the offer. We were each given (maximum) 2cl whiskey. When we got up and the waitress brought us our jackets, we were told that the bill hadn't been paid yet - to our great surprise, we still had to pay for the nightcap that was offered! “Another €35 please, with card or cash?” - that’s not possible! Unfortunately, we definitely advise against this restaurant.

First of all a big thank you! The food, the quality, presentation and service were outstanding! Every piece was cooked/prepared to perfection and the waiters very attentive. Thanks again for a great anniversary dinner with picture and origami :) We will come back! On a little side-note: The restaurant needs more ventilation and some paint touch-ups on the walls. There was a bit of a fishy smell upon entry which could easily be avoided with more air circulation.

To celebrate my wife birthday we decided to try Sakai with our 2 kids (1 and 4 years old). We ordered the winter menu and I have to say that every dish is really amazing. Also the service is great both supporting us to feel comfortable and for presenting the dish. For sure we will come back. One suggestion: please buy a Kinderstuhl. I understand that it is maybe not common family with small children coming to this type of restaurant. But when it happens would make the full experience perfect

Man sitzt in sehr gemütlicher Atmosphäre. Der Service war excellent. Alles wurde nett kommentiert. Das Menü, dass wir gewählt hatten war sehr lecker.

Experience was not up to Michelin Standards. I have been to Sansaro - Munich, Zenkichi - Berlin, and a bunch more and this one was the weakest experience. Someone decided to hire a completely untrained waiter. Who not only made the greeting awkward, but also constantly gave me a feeling that I shouldn’t be here. Gave questions of doubt when asking if I liked the food, as if he doesn’t himself. I was first seated all the way in the back, which I didn’t book, then by my demand at the counter but for some reason right next to an obnoxious, uncultured couple, when the entire restaurant was mostly empty. Also a wall beam blocking my view to the sushi chef completely. My stomach was tensed up and my mind off to the left the entire time, for that annoying bald guy and his escort from Russia. If the staff had any sensibilities they would’ve sat me further away. The Japanese waiters were much better in general. I don’t know why there have to be two Germans who can’t read a room and were mostly standing around anyways. Cooking with Japanese ingredients from home, the food, except sushi (with too mushy rice and didn’t fall apart in your mouth as is the case in better places), couldn’t even compete with my own cooking - and I don’t consider myself a pro. The tempura was soggy and greasy, the shrimp tasted strongly of ocean floor and wasn’t balanced out well at all. The shrimp soup mostly tasted of what I just described, nothing else. The most watery Japanese soup I have ever had and I like them mild! Service never asked if I needed more to drink or otherwise. From the website you get the idea you can order a la carte but I was told I could only use it additively to the omakase menus. Also zero innovation and I had hoped for Kanten (jelly) dessert since it was mentioned on the website. At least they tried to accommodate my fructose intolerance. But again only by my request. 160€ for one person and a very average experience. Better to go to an honest place, pay not even 1/4 and get better food and better atmosphere. Oh and Hiro Satai didn’t even bother to be in his own restaurant. Somewhere off traveling in Japan. Dishonorable in my book. I guess he sees his place as a cash cow.

Not up to Michelin standard. Awkward untrained waiter, seated me wrong first, then by an obnoxious couple in an otherwise empty restaurant. And right next to a wall beam so I saw nothing of the chefs. Being by yourself is quite boring when you have nothing to see. Tempura was greasy and soggy, shrimp dashi tasted of ocean floor gunk and otherwise not just mild but watery, nobu‘s cod wasn’t grilled at all lacked that nice roasted flavour and sweetness was weak too. Couldn’t order a la carte, was told it’s just additive towards the omakase menu. For 160€ didn’t feel the warmth and excellence I did at Sansaro - Munich and Zenkichi - Berlin. To name two. Being able to cook those dishes myself in a decent traditional quality - this was embarrassing. Hiro Satai wasn’t even in the house - guess he rather roams around Japan than run his pride and joy?! No innovation. Very disappointing.

Einfach alles perfekt. Angefangen beim tollen Ambiente, den schmackhaften und hochwertigen Speisen und dem zuvorkommenden Personal. Man fühlt sich voll und ganz gut aufgehoben.

Alles super. Sehr toll. Wünschenswert wenn die Angestellten Deutsch sprechen würden.

Eine wunderbare Erfahrung. Ich hatte ein Weihnachtsmenü und eine Weinbegleitung. Der Empfang und der Service waren sehr freundlich und dem Gast zugewandt. Das Ambiente im Souterrain war sehr gemütlich. Die Speisen waren von hervorragender Qualität und sowohl geschmacklich als auch optisch ein Genuss. Die einzelnen Gänge war überraschend groß. Die Weinbegleitung bot reizvolle Entdeckungen, wenngleich nicht jeder Wein überzeugen konnte. Fazit: sehr empfehlenswert. Ich komme gern wieder.

Der Eingang zum Restaurant isz verbesserungswürdig. Der Vorraum ist sehr steril und renovierungsbedürftig; nicht sehr einladend. Die Ausstattung bei der Kochvorführung (Eingang) muss erneuert werden. Die Toiletten waren zwar sauber, aber man fühlte sich wegen der Ausstattung und Farbe sehr unwohl. Da sich das Restaurant im Keller befindet, muss das Ambiente farblich (hellere Farben) anders gestaltet werden. Die Erläuterung zum Essen war sehr gut. Ausnahmlos alle, die bei der Zubereitung, Präsentation des Essens beiteiligt waren, waren sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.

Unbelievable experience. The food and service is top notch. We could not ask for a better vibe. The food was unique, beautifully presented, and tasted delicious. We would recommend Sakai to anyone visiting Frankfurt.

Ich finde das Essen war lecker, aber für derjenige, die schon gutes japanischen Cousine kennen, ist nichts was besonderes.

Spannendes Restaurant mit sehr gutem Service. Wir hätten uns gewünscht darauf aufmerksam gemacht zu werden, dass es auch à la Carte Optionen gibt und nicht nur die Auswahl der beiden Menüs. Auch wäre es nett gewesen, wenn das Tischtuch, welches beim Abräumen die volle Sojasoßenschale abbekommen hat gewechselt worden wäre.

Es war wieder einmal traumhaft. Sakai San ist ein Sushi Meister, der es seinen Kunden ermöglicht massiv an CO2 Emission und Flugkilometer zu sparen und trotzdem excellentes japanisches Essen und insbesondere Sushi genießen zu können.

Leider hatten sowohl meine Frau als auch ich in der Nacht nach dem Besuch des Sakai, den wir zwar kulinarisch interessant, aber auch sehr teuer fanden, schwere Verdauungsprobleme und konnten erst am Abend des folgenden Tages wieder Nahrung zu uns nehmen.

Hier vergisst man einfach die zeit ! Man fühlt sich ein bisschen wie in einer anderen Welt . Wir wurden super empfangen und hatten Plätze an der Bar ! Absolut empfehlenswert an der Bar zu sitzen . Man schaut dem Meister beim "Zaubern " zu und bekommt es direkt auf sein Teller angerichtet . Eine nette Unterhaltung ist auch immer dabei .. ich bin verliebt in den Laden und in das Essen .

Ausgezeichnet, einzigartig, immer gerne wieder, eine Geschmacksexplosion.

Me and my wife spend our anniversary dinner at the Sakai. It was my second visit and again I was more than fully satisfied with the whole experience. Thank you for the great evening! I will come again!

Wow! What amazing sushi!! Wish we had places like this in the United States. A “must go” if you’re in Frankfurt for a trade show. Just make sure and make reservations 1 day out.
