Sichelschmiede in Freiburg im Breisgau

We ate dinner on a busy Saturday night. They squeezed us in, and we had a wonderful dinner. I had the pork chops and potatoes and my companion had spaetzle. The service was great, as was the price.

Recommended, excellent food, friendly staff, and right in the center!

We ordered a large salad. It was like chicken feed, the leaves were so wilted and brownish… Yuck! 🤮 Avoid at all costs! And don't even get me started on the state of the toilets – they were old and rather neglected. Avoid this place at all costs!

The service was good. The food was okay, but expensive for what was offered. Our Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) were not fresh but reheated.

The single room was nice and clean. The bed was rather worn out. The large window couldn't be opened because the staff were smoking and talking loudly on their phones in front of it. Sleeping in was out of the question. Outside the room, there was a strong smell of a mixture of old grease and cigarette smoke. Breakfast was basic but adequate. The TV only had sound, no picture. The Wi-Fi didn't work in the room. The light switch by the bed didn't work.

What a wonderful discovery! Bravo, a huge thank you for the quality of your welcome and your kindness! Especially towards our daughters! I hope to see you again very, very soon.

The place is very beautiful. We've been there several times. The service was disappointing. We ordered a beer and waited about 30 minutes. Even though there weren't many people there.

The perfect place for privacy and a delicious dinner. Peace, quiet, and the gentle sound of the river—the perfect combination! Thank you so much! The waitress, a lovely girl, provides excellent service, and is very welcoming and polite. The same can't be said about their neighbors, a brewery literally across the bridge. Everything is bad. But here—wonderful!

The food is good, but nothing special. It's a quaint pub that's always packed, and the noise level is accordingly high. The location is romantically situated by a stream, where you can even sit outside in the summer.

We spent four days in Freiburg, and ate here twice because the food was delicious. We sat outside in the beer garden on a warm October evening, which was no problem thanks to the patio heaters. The service staff seemed to be mostly students; they weren't professionals, but they were always attentive and friendly. The food was delicious, regional, home-style cooking: ox cheeks, roast suckling pig, cheese spaetzle, tiramisu... everything was delicious and plentiful. We'd gladly go back.

We were there with a group and actually got a seat. Super friendly service, a lovely menu, and delicious dishes.

The staff was completely overwhelmed. The table was only cleared of the previous occupant's leftovers upon request. The menu was shoved at us, and we couldn't even order drinks. After waiting for over 30 minutes, I went to the staff to finally order drinks. When we finally got around to ordering food, we were simply dismissed. The food was okay, but nothing more. Unfortunately, the restaurant's reviews completely misled and disappointed us. What a shame considering the great location.

I would recommend the guest rooms and the restaurant/bar. Lovely historical building with wonderful staff.

I highly recommend this restaurant! Great, regional food in a quaint setting. We also received our food very quickly.

We visited the restaurant after a city tour. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a seat. The ambiance under the trees is very nice, but unfortunately the plastic chairs and tables aren't very inviting. The food came very quickly. We ordered four different dishes. Among them, two dishes with chanterelle sauce were a real shame. One was a chanterelle mush. It was full of flour and flavorless, and the chanterelles were drowned. The pasta was tough, and the supposedly homemade dumplings were from a packet and tasted like Maggi. It was a real shame. The Maultaschen portion was very large, but overpowered by the bacon. The spaetzle pan was also very dry and bone-dry. Our complaint was accepted but not really taken seriously. A real shame. Not really an apology, just the comment: "We'd be the first to complain today." Aha. It's a shame; the guests won't be happy like this, and food, especially for these prices, should be enjoyable, not a hassle. Because half of the portions were returned.

An old house with only a dozen rooms, furnished in an old-fashioned style but with everything you need for a two-day city tour. No luxury or frills, but clean and welcoming, suitable for families.

I can't provide any information about the rooms, as I only visited the restaurant or the guest garden. With the beautiful weather, the guest garden was, as expected, very busy, but I was lucky and got a seat right away without having to wait. The menu arrived very quickly, and my order was also taken very quickly. My drink, starter, and main course arrived very promptly. I ordered the Maultaschen (swabian pasta) and was very impressed by both the portion size and the taste. Very tasty Maultaschen (swabian pasta) with bacon and onions. The staff were certainly busy, but were always very pleasant and very friendly. I can't comment on the interior design or anything else of the restaurant, as I only ate outside. Based on this experience, I can only recommend the restaurant.

Tasteless food. When you order the bill, they quickly show it to you on their mobile ordering system and then charge you immediately. I wouldn't recommend it to friends or family.

We know a few restaurants in Freiburg and today was the first time we went to Sichelschmiede – and definitely never again. When we went to the restroom, I noticed the extremely dirty floor. When we got to the restroom downstairs, I found a hygiene standard I hadn't expected. The trash cans were overflowing with napkins, which were also lying on the floor in front of the toilet. There was toilet paper everywhere in the restrooms, and it smelled strongly of urine. No staff had been around for a while. Back at the table, we were hoping for delicious food. For €20, we ordered a hunter's plate with spaetzle and pork schnitzel. Instead, we received a disheveled plate, with two schnitzels on top and a quarter of the plate with spaetzle, with a watery, overly salty hunter's sauce floating in between. Ultimately, this beautiful city has a lot to offer. Whoever runs this restaurant (it appears to be a Turkish family) doesn't put their heart and soul into it. At least, that's what we experienced today.

We only visited the restaurant, which was crowded because of the excellent quality. The Baden-style pork shoulder and chanterelle mushrooms were noteworthy.

If you love nightlife and beer garden yelling, this is the place to be downtown. Unfortunately, the room wasn't particularly clean; there were still hairs lying around and pieces of the floor tiles were missing. Breakfast was served in a room that was perhaps too small – risk of claustrophobia.

It's located next to the riverbank in a dreamy corner. There's a free drinking fountain nearby, and in the summer, everything is beautiful.

It may be a great place to eat or drink, but when you have such a lousy client empathy and a total lack of professionalism towards potential clients it is really a no go. So this review is very only for first impression since there was no follow up. I left

We arrived there at 9:30 p.m. during our bike tour "from Freiburg to Lindau" and were warmly welcomed. Unfortunately, due to limited space, there was no bicycle storage/cellar, but they were immediately willing to store our bikes in the restaurant starting at 11 p.m. The location in the heart of the city is fantastic, and of course, the beer garden right on the water is fantastic. It would be nice if hotel guests had the option to reserve a table by a specific time, if necessary, so they don't have to wait in line. Otherwise, the food was regional and really good, and the staff very friendly. We'd be happy to go back!

I can't comment on the rooms. We only used the restaurant. Unfortunately, the beer garden's furniture ruins the entire look and atmosphere, which doesn't suit the hotel at all. Old rustic meets cheap yellow plastic chairs crammed together with countless parasols that aren't necessary by the afternoon, as the sun has already set. Guests walk through the garden like an assembly line, looking for a spot, which is very annoying since they aren't intercepted at the entrance. Of course, you have to park off-site and walk a bit through the old town. The menu was clear. Staff friendly. Food okay, but not outstanding.

Restaurant: The best rindfilet I've ever eaten, I didn't give 5 stars because the wait was long and the späzli were unexpectedly semolina, but very good food!

Die „Sichelschmiede“ findet man am südöstlichen Rand der Altstadt, unweit des Schwabentores direkt an einem Gewerbekanal. Sehr schön ist der schattige, mit Bäumen bestandene bzw. mit Schirmen überdachte Aussenbereich. Die Karte hat normalen Umfang und Preise im mittleren Segment. Wir hatten 2 große Salatteller und 1 mal Putenschnitzel mit Späzle. Alle Gerichte schmeckten gut und waren ausreichend. Incl. Getränke zahlten wir zu dritt rd. 67,00 €. Das liegt noch im Rahmen des in Freiburg gängigen Preisniveaus. Schon wegen des tollen Ambientes werden wir bei unserem nächsten Freiburgbesucher wieder ansteuern.

My review concerns the restaurant where we eat every time we go to Fribourg. Very pleasant terrace, friendly service. Very good value for money. In June, we had the asparagus menu. The only negative point was that the asparagus on my plate was poorly drained, and the hollandaise sauce was runny. Hence the rating of 4 and not 5 (I may be too harsh).

Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing :( You could call it a bit more of a canteen meal. We were looking forward to traditional, delicious food. Unfortunately, it wasn't fresh or tasty, but rather ready-made products: like packet sauce, meat way too cooked, frozen vegetables and frozen pork belly. It's a real shame - they could do so much more with this place. The 2 stars are for the location and the staff - a very cozy and quaint restaurant with a nice outdoor seating area and very friendly and attentive staff!

I can't comment on the rooms, as we only visited the restaurant. There were a lot of guests, and the guest garden and the restaurant were completely full. Nevertheless, the waiters were very friendly and always acted calmly and thoughtfully in this tense situation. The food was delicious. The value for money was excellent. We can wholeheartedly recommend the Sichelschmiede. We would be happy to return.

I was looking forward to a fine meal in a typical Freiburg restaurant. The first impression was quite convincing; the interior is inviting. The Maultaschen soup as a starter was also delicious. Unfortunately, the grilled meat as a main course was a bitter disappointment for me personally. The whole thing seemed unloving; the meat was far too dry for me, and the seasoning was completely lacking. Therefore, I can't give it any more points.

The food was good. The staff was unaccommodating and overwhelmed. They barely spoke German.

We had planned to have dinner here, but were nearby for lunch and decided to eat here then. Our experience was immensely enjoyable and we returned later for dinner as well. Food was delicious and prices were very reasonable for quality and quantity. If we were to return to Freiburg, we definitely would head for Sichelschmiede again.

An absolutely magnificent location, nestled in Fribourg's old town, right on the waterfront. Whether on the terrace in summer or in the romantic interior in winter, it's the perfect place to unwind. I highly recommend it.

Very central location in Freiburg’s old town. It's quiet at night, but at 7:00 a.m. it gets busy outside. Food, rooms and staff are very good and very friendly! We'd love to come back!

Food was incredibly good and at a very fair price. Unfortunately you can't make a reservation outside, but you can always find a place in the beautiful interior.

We were in the restaurant. The food was good, the portions are large. We had two dishes: Ochsenbäckle (was great) and Black Forest cheese spaetzle with bacon (was a bit too salty for me). If you don't like salt, you might want to order Freiburger Käsespätzle (without bacon). I probably should have done that 😅

We were told there would be a long wait (more than an hour instead of 40 minutes, but whatever). After more than half an hour, the waitress informed us that one of our orders was not available. The other order was a Jägerschnitzel, but it wasn't a real schnitzel and didn't taste good, speechless

The food was average and the waiting time to get served… 2 hours + waiting line to have a table. No, I don’t recommend the place. At least, just inform your clients that the service will be long… to avoid any disapointment.

I'm just referring to food here. We had normal spaetzle and a plate of "pink" fried pork medallions. To be honest, the food was much worse than expected. The cheese spaetzle tasted boring and the meat was still pink but rather fried. Lots of nutmeg on the spaetzle and until-firm frozen vegetables. In total we left 72 euros there and were full but dissatisfied. Especially because we had eaten next door the day before and it was much nicer, tastier and cheaper there. So we wouldn't recommend the food. Too geared towards tourists like us.

We only sat in the beer garden because it was such nice weather and the beer garden is so picturesquely located next to the stream (with a crocodile!). Very friendly waitress who talked to many guests and was interested. As is often the case in Freiburg, there is a very diverse range of beers on the menu (including more draft beers than in Munich). We had a Ganter and an Aperol Sprizz.

The food was medium average. Waited about 1 hour for food. Service/friendliness in the lower third. Location great, rest no longer necessary. Don't come anymore.

Downright romantic! We spent 2 nights in the spacious “family room” number 7 (room number 5 next door is much smaller). However, the sleeper under the sloping roof should not get up suddenly without thinking. You sink into the soft sofa in the living room in front of the television. The wooden steps to the second floor were tolerable for heart/asthma sufferers. The pretty hotel all around is particularly impressive because of its ideal location in the old town. Next door the border stream rushes with the stone crocodile. Beer garden in front of the house, which closes around 10 p.m. and didn't bother us in terms of noise. Rolling suitcases on Freiburg's cobblestones are more uncomfortable. The many different service employees were always friendly and helpful despite minor language difficulties (which was not due to Hessian-Swabian). Plenty of space in the cupboards too. There is an abundance of sockets in every room (wonderful). It was very pleasant to shower in the whirlpool-like bathtub. 2 large windows in the bathroom are also welcome. Kitchenette, microwave etc. available. Fridge is missing (but we didn't need it). However, we were only able to take sparkling water from the restaurant in large containers or in 0.2 liter bottles. Bottled Coke was not offered. Restaurant/breakfast area in small plots, winding and very cozy. Breakfast was standard, given our late appetite we were very happy with the cheese spaetzle/salad and 6 snails in the pot. All other guests were in a good mood and had to “move on” to the surrounding area when business closed at 10 p.m.

We went here for dinner two days in a row because we really enjoyed it the first time! The Ochsenbäckle, the onion roast and especially the Black Forest cheese spaetzle and the Maultaschen are highly recommended! The service was very friendly and quick. The price-performance ratio is also right. All in all, an all around great experience!

Un lugar encantador y encantador para parar a comer algo a cada uno. La comida era muy sabrosa y a un precio razonable y el personal era muy atento. Tuvimos una comida de tres platos aquí y realmente lo disfrutamos. El Pinot noir local también era genial. Sin duda recomendaría la tarta de manzana con un capuchino para terminar! Volverá definitivamente.
