Sichelschmiede in Freiburg im Breisgau

We were in the restaurant. The food was good, the portions are large. We had two dishes: Ochsenbäckle (was great) and Black Forest cheese spaetzle with bacon (was a bit too salty for me). If you don't like salt, you might want to order Freiburger Käsespätzle (without bacon). I probably should have done that 😅

We were told there would be a long wait (more than an hour instead of 40 minutes, but whatever). After more than half an hour, the waitress informed us that one of our orders was not available. The other order was a Jägerschnitzel, but it wasn't a real schnitzel and didn't taste good, speechless

The food was average and the waiting time to get served… 2 hours + waiting line to have a table. No, I don’t recommend the place. At least, just inform your clients that the service will be long… to avoid any disapointment.

It was very interesting and should be repeated.

I'm just referring to food here. We had normal spaetzle and a plate of "pink" fried pork medallions. To be honest, the food was much worse than expected. The cheese spaetzle tasted boring and the meat was still pink but rather fried. Lots of nutmeg on the spaetzle and until-firm frozen vegetables. In total we left 72 euros there and were full but dissatisfied. Especially because we had eaten next door the day before and it was much nicer, tastier and cheaper there. So we wouldn't recommend the food. Too geared towards tourists like us.

The restaurant is simply Super, the service is top-notch, the prices are reasonable for the season. I definitely recommend it

We only sat in the beer garden because it was such nice weather and the beer garden is so picturesquely located next to the stream (with a crocodile!). Very friendly waitress who talked to many guests and was interested. As is often the case in Freiburg, there is a very diverse range of beers on the menu (including more draft beers than in Munich). We had a Ganter and an Aperol Sprizz.

The food was medium average. Waited about 1 hour for food. Service/friendliness in the lower third. Location great, rest no longer necessary. Don't come anymore.

Downright romantic! We spent 2 nights in the spacious “family room” number 7 (room number 5 next door is much smaller). However, the sleeper under the sloping roof should not get up suddenly without thinking. You sink into the soft sofa in the living room in front of the television. The wooden steps to the second floor were tolerable for heart/asthma sufferers. The pretty hotel all around is particularly impressive because of its ideal location in the old town. Next door the border stream rushes with the stone crocodile. Beer garden in front of the house, which closes around 10 p.m. and didn't bother us in terms of noise. Rolling suitcases on Freiburg's cobblestones are more uncomfortable. The many different service employees were always friendly and helpful despite minor language difficulties (which was not due to Hessian-Swabian). Plenty of space in the cupboards too. There is an abundance of sockets in every room (wonderful). It was very pleasant to shower in the whirlpool-like bathtub. 2 large windows in the bathroom are also welcome. Kitchenette, microwave etc. available. Fridge is missing (but we didn't need it). However, we were only able to take sparkling water from the restaurant in large containers or in 0.2 liter bottles. Bottled Coke was not offered. Restaurant/breakfast area in small plots, winding and very cozy. Breakfast was standard, given our late appetite we were very happy with the cheese spaetzle/salad and 6 snails in the pot. All other guests were in a good mood and had to “move on” to the surrounding area when business closed at 10 p.m.

Delicious Swabian cuisine, nice staff, rustic restaurant

We went here for dinner two days in a row because we really enjoyed it the first time! The Ochsenbäckle, the onion roast and especially the Black Forest cheese spaetzle and the Maultaschen are highly recommended! The service was very friendly and quick. The price-performance ratio is also right. All in all, an all around great experience!

Un lugar encantador y encantador para parar a comer algo a cada uno. La comida era muy sabrosa y a un precio razonable y el personal era muy atento. Tuvimos una comida de tres platos aquí y realmente lo disfrutamos. El Pinot noir local también era genial. Sin duda recomendaría la tarta de manzana con un capuchino para terminar! Volverá definitivamente.

Great place to eat, the Jägerschnitzel was very tasty and the sauce incredible. All in all, it was really relaxing and the site right next to the canal is quite scenic for having dinner. Many thanks to the people working there, both for the service and the help!

Very lovingly furnished restaurant, Food was plentiful. Service very friendly. Starters very good, roast beef with Maultaschen, top. Steak well fried. The fried potatoes could have used a hot pan for another 2 minutes. And, steak and gravy, well, I don't like it. Nevertheless, I can recommend the restaurant.

I can't confirm the slow service from other reviews. Both guys were great. The food was delicious and the prices are fair. Atmosphere great! I actually expected the Schäufele to have something crunchy too. Unfortunately everything was just swimming in sauce. Still it was ok.

We were greeted in a friendly and nice manner. The restaurant is furnished in a rustic style. We can't say anything about the rooms. Service was friendly and nice. The dining room was cold and not suitable for tired city visitors. The innkeeper's children stayed in the dining room to play, which reduced the enjoyment of the food. The food was served hot and tasted good. Price/performance ratio is still consistent, but at the highest limit.

A very nice and older restaurant in Freiburg, very nice rustic rooms whether in the front or in the back. The food was very excellent. The conditions are friendly. It's nice to sit outside next to the stream in the summer and it's very comfortable.

Went there today without a reservation and had a cute little table come. The service is extremely friendly and accommodating. We had cream schnitzel and onion roast, both were delicious. We'll be back.

About the restaurant - Typical German food well cooked. The staff does not speak English, but they try to understand you and are very kind and friendly. Good place to get away a little from the hustle and bustle of the center, kitchen open all day and dogs allowed!!

Es triste cuando lo mejor que se puede decir es que tiene una decoración encantadora. Lástima que el servicio y la higiene no coincidían con la cubierta. Un servidor tardó más de 20 minutos en tomar una orden de bebida. Una copa de vino tenía lápiz labial, que la camarera puso los ojos en blanco cuando lo mencionamos. La comida era una C. Pero, el trampolín era el inodoro. Estaba contaminado con caca y papel higiénico y el piso era pegajoso. No podíamos esperar a irnos.

Idyllically located with a romantic view of the old town. Despite the central location, relatively quiet surroundings. Lovingly furnished. Everything was very clean. Sometimes you feel like a damsel :-). Everything was available at the breakfast buffet. Overall recommended

We love the Sichelschmiede in Freiburg, and we eat there regularly. The food is great, the service is great, and the atmosphere is great. Do make a Reservation as it is popular and often is too busy for walk-ins.

Excellent German restaurant in Freiburg im Breisgau I went to this restaurant for dinner with my girlfriend during a day in Freiburg im Breisgau. The restaurant is located in the historic center of the town along the Gewerbekanal. We had dinner outside in the small square near the banks. I had the suckling pig with roast potatoes. I found the meat very tender and tasty. I accompanied dinner with a medium local beer. The service was fast but a little distracted when clearing the table, some cutlery fell on my backpack, dirtying it with sauce. Luckily we got rid of the stain without any problems. The prices are honest.

Heute haben wir in der Sichelschmiede gegessen. Nachdem wir an unseren Tisch geführt wurden und wir es uns gemütlich machen wollten stellten wir fest, dass es in dem Raum ungemütlich kalt ist. Wir zogen unsere Jacken gleich wieder an. Der Heizkörper, der sich im Raum befand war auf Nummer 5 kalt. Also war die Heizung nicht in Betrieb. Von Gemütlichkeit keine Spur!! Das Essen war nicht schlecht, aber ebenfalls kalt. Sowohl die Knödel, als auch das Fleisch. Als wir dann halb erfroren waren und bezahlen wollten, kam niemand vorbei. Ich habe mich daraufhin beim Personal gemeldet. Es komme gleich jemand war die Reaktion. Nach weiteren gut 10 Minuten hatten wir die Nase voll und standen auf, um zu bezahlen. Auf meine Bemerkung ich wolle hier nur noch raus, da es sehr kalt sei meinte die Bedienung sie könne dies verstehen. Muss wohl ein bekanntes Problem sein! Kalter Raum, kaltes Essen und trotz allem um 80 Euro ärmer, das kann es wohl nicht sein. Nie mehr Sichelschmiede für uns!!

Today we ate at the sickle forge. After we were shown to our table and we wanted to make ourselves comfortable, we realized that it was uncomfortably cold in the room. We immediately put our jackets back on. The radiator that was in the room was cold at number 5. So the heating wasn't working when the outside temperature was 5 degrees. No trace of comfort! The food wasn't bad, but it was also cold. Both the dumplings and the meat. When we were half frozen and wanted to pay, no one came by. I then reported to the staff. Someone was coming soon was the reaction. After another 10 minutes or so we had enough and got up to pay. When I said I just wanted to get out of here because it was very cold, the waitress said she could understand that. Must be a known problem. Cold room, cold food and still 80 euros poorer. That probably can't be it. No more sickle forging for us!!

Great ambience in a beautiful location in Freiburg's old town. The service at the beginning of our meal was very friendly and attentive. There was nothing to complain about about the dishes themselves - they were consistently delicious. Unfortunately, we weren't noticed after that, so we sat with empty plates and glasses for 40 minutes and would have liked to have had something to drink and eat. There really wasn't anyone around anymore. Instead, we ultimately paid in disappointment and therefore unfortunately do not recommend the sickle forge.

Quaint restaurant with a beer garden. Classic regional dishes of good quality. Was very tasty. I can't rate the hotel.

The staff was very friendly. The hotel is very centrally located. Food was OK. The single room is not recommended, it should probably be used as a storage room. No proper windows to ventilate, all windows broken. The room is located directly on the balcony where the smokers meet. And probably the exhaust pipe from the kitchen runs long. That's how it smells in the room!!! But the rooms are clean.

There are solid dishes here at reasonable prices. The service is friendly and quick. The atmosphere is cozy. We always enjoy coming back for dinner.

We stayed in one of the rooms and ate in the restaurant. The food (in the evening) was absolutely delicious. The Kässpätzle were spicy and served hot. The veal cheeks were tender, juicy and almost melted in the mouth. We barely waited more than fifteen minutes for our food. Every service person we met was friendly, warm, attentive and took their time. The room is a bit small, the mattress is fantastic and everything is sparkling clean. The whole building is old, old fashioned (consistent) and has some corners that could use new paint or other renovation. The service, the great food and the 1a mattress absolutely made up for it for us.

I was very satisfied. Unlike various other reviews, the meal didn't take too long (around 25 minutes) and it was very tasty. I chose rolled suckling pig with Brägele.

I ate here last night with my friend and it was incredible. The traditional German cuisine was something I wasn’t prepared to enjoy nearly as much as I did. I can’t wait to come back and eat here again. 10/10

Visiting from the US and what an experience! We happened to stumble across this place after being turned down by two other restaurants—no reservations—and we were greeted like family. You could taste the ounces of love in every bite. This was one of my all time favorite dining experiences. If you’re looking for a quality meal and stellar service, don’t walk here. Run!

Shortly before 12 o'clock we wanted to order food and were informed by the employee that she couldn't put the order in the kitchen until 12 o'clock and we had to wait another 6 minutes. MA training would be urgently needed. The food was a disaster. Cold plate, so the unsalted spaetzle was cold when served, and the meat was tough and inedible. Finally, the toilets. Just “Disgusting” If I had taken this route before ordering, I would definitely have forgone everything in the first place. Not recommended and 1 star is still too much

Leider in gar keinen Fall mehr zu empfehlen. Lieblos gekochtes Essen in minderer Qualität. Die schöne Location und die nette Bedienung konnte das leider nicht wett machen. Das Essen war fad. Das Fleisch war zäh und trocken. Die Soßen und Spätzle waren nicht selbstgemacht. Viel zu teuer für diese Qualität. Sehr enttäuschend für ein Lokal, dass früher mal so gut war.

Die Lage ist hervorragend und das Personal ist sehr freundlich. Die Portionen sind mehr als reichlich. Leider ist das Essen geschmacklich nicht so wie ich es mir gewünscht hätte. Mein Schäuffele war trocken und die Bratkartoffeln habe ich liegen gelassen. Mein Beilagensalat muss schon länger gestanden haben.

Highly recommended if you want to be completely ignored by three waiters out of four present, not even get a drink after 30 mins of waiting, even though the place didn't seem to be busy what so ever. Fantastic location is no excuse for arrogance and poor customer treatment. Shocking experience!

The terrace is located along the Insel, near the Schwabentor in the pleasant Gerberau street. You can easily walk to the Martinstor, enjoying the beautiful places.

Location is great! The waitresses are friendly. The food is delicious and the portions are big enough. Unfortunately, the price level for farm-style cuisine is a bit too high. This is Freiburg and not Stuttgart or Munich... At the shift change at 5:00 p.m. you are pressured to pay or asked to wait until 5:00 p.m. to place your order. Not customer oriented...

My review is for the restaurant. Granted that I am a very patient person, however this was the worst experience in recent years. We waited more than 2 hours for our food, which didn't even arrive!! 3 times we asked for "explanations", given that the tables near us, also after a long wait, were at least already eating. The waitress said she goes to ask in the kitchen, but she never came back, to give us a "Feedback", answer, anything. Professionalism at level 0. Never again!

We waited 1 and a half hours for our food and got a tough piece of meat. It's a shame because the location is actually very nice.
