The food was very good. Friendly service. We really enjoyed our stay.

We had dinner at Meyerhof with friends. From the goose parfait with pumpkin to the schnitzel with fried potatoes, everything was excellent: the portions were pleasantly large and the prices very fair. Even though the restaurant was busy, the service was always attentive. We'll definitely be back!

Summary: – Hair in the food. – Everything was undercooked. – And instead of an apology, I only got a curt: "You should have just sent the food back." Yeah, right, am I supposed to lovingly spit the food out first and then ceremoniously present it at the end? Honestly, the service and standards: somewhere between a soggy schnitzel and the absolute lowest of the low.

I ate there yesterday. Good food or not, but €2.70 for a 0.33l bottle of tap water is simply outrageous. I already had food and wine at the table, so there was no reason to rip me off like that. When I asked the waiter how that could be, I only got a curt and rude reply: "It's on the menu." Such disrespectful behavior is completely unacceptable. If you treat guests like that, you've completely missed the point of hospitality. Never again.

We ended up here by chance, wanting local food. It's like a family's dinning room, rustic, no frills. Warm friendly service and the food was generous portions well priced and lovely! GREAT BEER.

Hands down the best food that captures this regions cuisine available in city centre. Although I’m not an authentic German to be claiming that statement this has been a go-to place since the first day I arrived in Freiburg with my friends born&raised here. Dinner reservations are a good idea to have but I’ve been here plenty without any reservation and got a table within 15 minutes. This place has amazing history, still belongs to and is operated by local family and so all the more reasons to support such a great place. Very interesting to read about this location before enjoying your food there, it’s really neat history !!! If any staff are reading this - thanks for the great service and great food. Rustic restaurant in the heart of Freiburg... good home cooking and friendly staff

Very good service, and the food was also good. It's advisable to reserve a table.

I had a very good cream of snail soup, followed by zander with a potato crust and creamed cabbage. Both were fantastic, and the service was fast and very good. If I ever come back to Freiburg, I'll be happy to stop here again.

A lovely, simple restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and classic Baden cuisine. It was very busy during our Thursday lunchtime visit, yet the service was fast and friendly. The food was truly excellent, and the prices were reasonable. Our children were also very happy and enjoyed their spaetzle.

At first, I wasn't particularly impressed by the ambiance. However, the place has something special...nice people...life! The food was incredibly delicious. I highly recommend the Maultaschen. I'd go back!

I ate a brawn, tripe in a cream sauce, so delicious that even those who refuse to eat offal would eat it blindly and wouldn't know what it was. Despite the restaurant being packed—there were 13 of us there—it went very quickly.

We waited 20 minutes for them to take our order and another 25 minutes for us to be served. When we complained to the waitress that we didn't have time, she explained that they were full because it was Saturday. Unfortunately, a couple who came after 15 minutes were served first. Finally, the food was indifferent and tasteless.

Our first stop of our journey and ended up here in the search of German food. We ordered few classic dishes and the food was amazing. The portions are very big and it's well priced as well. The place also give that old German restaurant vibes, which is really nice. It's a good stopover for hungry city explorers.

The potato and lentil soup starter was great. The main course was delicious! The cheese spaetzle and pork steak were delicious! My friend's Maultaschen (ravioli) with salad were equally good. Reservations are definitely recommended, as the restaurant was literally packed around lunchtime (11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) – on a Tuesday outside of school holidays!

The place was packed with a real buzz. In German style, customers share tables, so no tables for two unless its quiet!! The waiting staff though rushed off their feet are really nice and efficient. The kitchen could hardly have got food out faster. A wonderful evening out and a real contrast to the quiet British country pub.

Completely satisfied! The atmosphere was great, the service was super friendly, and the food was fantastic! Everything was delicious! We had the amazing spaetzle and the schnitzel with fries! Highly recommended! And the apple rings for dessert were fantastic. The portion sizes are more than generous, and the value for money is excellent!

Down-to-earth goodness – you can stop by here without hesitation. We were here as tourists, and after a long Google review, we decided to stop in spontaneously and were completely satisfied.

My expectations weren't met! Top service, really great team Great location The side salad was also really delicious But... The pork loin steak was completely overdone, very dry. The fried potatoes were more steamed than fried and unfortunately had no flavor - unseasoned. Unfortunately, all in all, a disappointment, even though I was looking forward to it.

The food was not tasty. Dishes are overpriced. An outrageous price, which was not communicated properly, for a bottle of water.

We had to wait more than half an hour for our food to be brought to us.

The liver with braised pork belly was very well cooked and partly burnt, and the braised pork belly was swimming in its own oil. The schnitzel with fries or spaetzle were OK, but nothing special. Unfortunately, no one came to share this information. The waiter came to take our order, bring drinks, and bring food. There was no question about whether everything was okay or tasty. I also had to go to the waiter to pay, as he didn't come to the table. The restaurant is quaint, and the outdoor area is fine. That's it.

We were pleased to discover a traditional German restaurant, very central. We came here on the recommendation of the hotel receptionist, and it was a good choice. We tried traditional German dishes and we really liked them. As a criticism, I would say that the service was very slow. The wait between the first courses and the second courses was more than 45 minutes. The desserts were a little faster, but getting the bill and paying required 20 minutes, despite having requested the waiters' attention on several occasions.

Good food, especially the fried apples with ice cream. The service was just average – we asked for bread but it was never brought to us. When it came to the bill, the waiter asked us (tourists) for a tip, while he didn’t ask the locals. For fairness, either you ask everyone or you don’t ask at all.

Six of us spontaneously stopped by for dinner last night – and what can I say? The food was of the highest quality and truly exceptionally delicious. Anyone who loves Baden cuisine can't miss this restaurant. From Maultaschen (swabian ravioli) to Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle), Schäufele (shoulder of pork), classic sausage salad, and fresh salads – we tried everything from the menu and everyone was thoroughly satisfied. Kudos to the kitchen! The service was consistently professional, but could have been a bit friendlier – unfortunately, we didn't feel entirely welcome. The ambiance is rustic. We didn't find it quite as cozy inside, but outside is certainly a dream on a warm summer day. Conclusion: We'd love to come back!

My review from 6 years ago: Love the Apple ring desert here. The waitresses are really friendly and fun. It's also in a cute little side street under the vines. It is cozy here. My review from my last visit 08/2025 Well unfortunately things have changed. The food was ok, the Apfelküchle was still really delicious. The Kartoffelsalat was too salty and I told the waitress and she just apologized and still didn't do anything and I paid for it full price. She could have offered to give me French fries or whatever. But she just said something along the line of "oh well". Then the soup we ordered was big and we wanted to take it with us. They didn't have to go boxes for soups because they don't. Seriously what kind of answer is that you can't take it we don't carry to-go-boxes for soups. So basically I have to find a new place where I can eat my Apfelküchle. Also I have a feeling since this place automatically has a lot of customers (location, location!) they don't have to be that friendly or try their best at customer service.

You wait 20 minutes, and no one comes. I call the waitress to order. When the waitress comes, she's very rude and shouts like crazy. She says we've been there for three minutes. A tip for the waitress: A waitress should never behave like that towards customers. The customers pay their wages. This is the first and last time they'll see us.

We sat down at a table and waited for 20 minutes - no one came. When I politely asked if we could please order something (I wasn't feeling well and desperately needed a drink), we were immediately yelled at. The waitress was extremely rude and loud, accusing us of not having registered - even though there was no one in sight to greet us or show us directions. Instead of showing understanding or help, we were repeatedly yelled at. That's not how you treat guests. Anyone who works in the restaurant industry should like people - or find something else. If you have to register somewhere, that should be communicated clearly and visibly - ideally with a larger sign. This isn't an employment agency where you have to take a number before it's your turn. We are paying guests and expect at least respectful treatment. It's a shame, because the food so far has been really delicious.

Overall nice restaurant. Good quality-price ratio. The food is the typical Alsatian-German food, perfect for winter or for a colder evening. I really liked the apple dessert, clearly made fresh. The service was quite slow, we stood there a good 15 minutes before being shown our table. Besides that the staff was quite neutral… not very friendly nor rude. Not a life-changing experience but still reccomended.

One of the last traditional restaurants in Freiburg's old town. The Große Meyerhof offers a selection of solid Baden dishes and seasonal specialties. Baden or Alsatian sausage salad are top-notch any time of year, as are the large portions of schnitzel. What they do best in the kitchen here is Freiburger Brägele (High German fried potatoes). They deserve 5 stars on their own, but of course also in combination with meat dishes or in a Baden trio (with Bibbeleskäs and sausage salad). There's a telling recommendation for the drinks selection, see the notice board. 😉

This was our third time eating here, and our last. We go every year when we're in the Black Forest. It was the same this time. All the tables outside were occupied, inside only one table with two people, otherwise everything was empty. Okay, normally you have to wait for a table, lucky us. Then... we waited almost 10 minutes for the menu, even though the waitresses saw us; they seemed pretty listless that day. Then we ordered, the food came pretty quickly, except for the fact that it looked as if the waitress had almost thrown the plates down on the table without putting them down. And with the food, another disappointment: the liver we ordered was rubbery and hard around the edges, the schnitzel was partly like a sole, and the small portion consisted of 10% schnitzel and 90% spaetzle. In the past, the chefs made an effort to arrange the food on the plate so that it looked appropriate, but this time everything was just thrown onto the plate. There used to be a salad, but now it's a dandelion salad. The bill wasn't exactly modest, however, at just under 70 euros for three people. Thanks, the third time was my last visit to this bar.

I visited this restaurant after being introduced by an acquaintance who said it was a schnitzel specialty restaurant. I thought that schnitzel alone would be boring, so I ordered potato soup with sausage (similar to bread soup in Korea). My companion ordered schnitzel with cream sauce. Schnitzel is a representative traditional/popular food in Germany, and each restaurant has a different style. You can't say that some restaurants are good at different styles and others are bad at them (of course, there are restaurants that really can't cook them). This restaurant's schnitzel is made with pork, and contrary to general expectations, it's not that thick for pork, but the meat texture is very soft and smooth when swallowed. The fried part feels like it's lightly coated with batter to give it a texture (it's not crispy like Japanese tonkatsu, but I didn't mind that.) The potato soup was also good as an appetizer. The sausage added a little saltiness that made it even more appetizing. I tried one of Donghaeng's cream sauce schnitzels, and if you've had a lot of schnitzels, I recommend this variation (it's delicious)

An incredible place in the city center, great special attention, very friendly and personalized treatment, excellent food, incredible price, typical flavor of the best city Freiburg. I will return, I highly recommend it. I will return very soon.

I spontaneously went there for lunch alone. I ate delicious homemade asparagus Maultaschen (ravioli) with a large salad. The ready-made hollandaise sauce should have been left out, though. Since it was served in a separate bowl, it wasn't a problem. Good value for money. Service was friendly. However, it's not a quiet place to eat (of course, that's due to the location in the heart of the tourist area). If that doesn't bother you, you'll get honest food at fair prices. Highly recommended. 👍

In the most central area of ​​Freiburg, on a rather quiet side street. The atmosphere is welcoming and typical, as are the dishes offered on the menu. It does not give the impression of a place for mass tourism, even if the menus in different languages ​​are a clear sign. Efficient and kind service, tasty and well-made dishes, excellent beer. With reasonable prices, it is basically the best you can ask for a regenerating stop.

Given the beautiful weather, there was no room outside, but after consulting with the friendly waiter, we sat inside first, and the next available table outside was reserved for us. It was quicker than expected. I highly recommend the creamed pork schnitzel with spaetzle and the baked apple rings for dessert. Everything was delicious.

I can't speak generally, but the dish of the day was absolutely terrible (turkey with dry rice and two spoonfuls of sauce). I thought €10, I'd give it a try, and it sounds healthy. But years ago, the Freiburg student cafeteria was better.

The welcome was very friendly, and the service was attentive. The food: We both had the schnitzel with fried potatoes (Brägele), or fried potatoes. The whole story was a carelessly prepared, convenience schnitzel from the deep fryer with lukewarm potatoes that had probably seen a frying pan a few hours ago, no onions, no bacon cubes, and no salt. The restaurant itself was homely and somewhat chaotic. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it. One plus point: the beer tastes good.

Maybe it was because I had high expectations because it was so well-known. It was even tastier than the schnitzel I had in Colmar the day before, and the pork was tougher and less flavorful. They had to seat customers at one table, which was not good, and the staff seemed to be out of their minds because it was so busy. Even so, they asked us, as tourists, to choose whether to tip, and we reluctantly gave a tip despite the unsatisfactory service.

Today I wanted to go to my monthly meeting, which was supposed to take place at the Grosser Meyerhof this time. However, they told me it had been moved to the Martinsbräu, which wasn't true. So I went home. They didn't even think about correcting this mistake when my colleagues brought it to the Grosser Meyerhof's attention. I won't be coming again.

We wanted to go to a regulars' table, but we were confidently told at the door that there wasn't one and that some people had already been turned away. It turns out that the regulars' table was actually held there under the exact name we had mentioned. It's okay not to know everything as a waiter, but the waiter confidently sent us to Martinsbräu, where he thought the regulars' table was. That definitely doesn't speak well for the staff there.

The food and the restaurant are absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, the service doesn't pay attention to the customers! We waited a full 30 minutes for someone to come and pay. The worst part was that you get annoyed when you don't get a tip after such a good service, so you throw the change on the table and mutter to yourself about it. Visited Großer Meyerhof in May of 2025 for lunch - overall was a good experience! This was on a Monday and several other restaurants in the old city were closed. Ordered a beer and a rahmschnitzel both of which were good. The rahmschnitzel was a bit basic but I guess more or less what I expected. A good sized portion for lunch. Definitely a solid choice for some authentic German cuisine. For a Monday afternoon the restaurant was quite busy and the patio seating was entirely full.

We visited the inn twice this week. The staff was extremely friendly, the food was delicious, and the value for money was excellent. The decor was comfortable.
