Shin Shin in Hamburg

I've known this restaurant since I was a child. Today I have children of my own and have been here again after a long time. Unfortunately, memories of the restaurant are better than it actually is, objectively judged today. The most important thing is that the quality of the food is absolutely solid and the selection is very wide. Some finesse is missing in the seasoning of the dishes; everything could be more pointed and less uniform. But what, in my opinion, has absolutely no relation to the quality of the food are the prices. Our main courses cost over 30 EUR across the board, which is "ambitious" if you only get mediocre dishes. The interior also stands in stark contrast to the ambitious prices. Yes, it's decorated in "classic Chinese" style, at least it was decades ago. Given the condition of the interior, the last time investments were made in the interior was before the turn of the millennium. The fabric on all chair backs is clearly visibly rubbed/dirty and you get the impression that the quality of the furnishings is no longer of any importance. Really a shame overall, I will remember this Alstertal institution better than this last visit. I won't come back again. Apparently I'm not alone in this perception. There were very few guests in the very large restaurant when we visited.

Prices are out of this world. Cheap pasta with chicken €20 - cost of goods around €1. NO THANKS!

The last time I was there was about 14 years ago and it has only confirmed that this restaurant is one of the worst Asian restaurants for me. The food has no taste, it all tastes very similar somehow. The absolute impudence, and they're really making a fool of themselves, are the outrageous prices. Yes, it has become more expensive everywhere, but there is no longer a dish under €25 at the Asian restaurant!!?!? For me and my friends, the store is dead!

Ambience good, service good, products and preparation good, but lacked seasoning. The sauces were a bit bland and sometimes tasted like ketchup.

We have been visiting here off and on for about 10 years. It's quaint there and resembles the Chinese restaurants from the 80's without all the fat Buddhas that used to be there. In contrast to before, however, the sauces are no longer so thick and taste perfect if you indulge in this meal. So far there has been nothing wrong with any of the dishes we have ordered. It was rich and always delicious. My nephew was served a peanut sauce that is not normally on the menu and I have to say, I have never tasted such a delicious peanut sauce. We will continue to enjoy coming here and feel welcome, as we do every time.

The food is not seasoned enough. The service is very nice and attentive. Parking spaces are available. In summer you can also eat outside. All dishes are quite expensive.

We felt pressured by the staff as if they wanted to get rid of us. The waitress always forgot something. Drinks had hardly any carbonation left. The food itself was good but two of us had a gastrointestinal attack after the visit. The only good thing was the ambience. Never again.

20 years ago we had weekly meals here as a family, but then we moved. After all these years we came to visit the restaurant again. Never again! The restaurant is totally deserted and the waiters were so unsympathetic. Not even a smile on his face. Portions are very small and not as tasty as they were back then. There are much better restaurants now! The restaurant is simply getting old. And then the poor turtles in the dark aquarium...

I was just there and can really only advise you against it. Again, the menu was last updated 30 years ago. However, the prices are at the highest level. We ordered Cola for eight people, which came without carbonation and tasted like Diet Coke. We paid the tuition fee of €40. Don't make the same mistake.

Addendum: Outdoor area redesigned and service and quality better than ever Good Chinese everywhere - but this Chinese is the reference. Of course, there is no fish bladder on chicken feet here either, as the food is adapted to the European palate. 3x tip from the lunch menu: e.g. duck on chestnuts, shrimp or barbecue beef. Even the notorious complainer likes it here.

A culinary highlight in Hamburg! We were completely impressed by the ShinShin Restaurant (two families of eight people). As soon as you enter you are warmly welcomed and you immediately feel the authentic, warm atmosphere. The furnishings are traditional, which gives the restaurant a special charm. The absolute highlight, however, is the food. Every dish is a true taste experience! The ingredients are fresh, the dishes are prepared with great attention to detail, and the flavors harmonize perfectly. We particularly recommend the Peking duck and the dim sum – simply delicious! The service is friendly, very attentive and always ensures that you feel comfortable. Even special requests are fulfilled without any problems. Overall, the ShinShin Restaurant is an absolute recommendation for anyone who wants to enjoy excellent Chinese cuisine in Hamburg. We will definitely come back!

The Shin Shin in Hamburg Sasel is an institution that has been in business for over 50 years. I think the last time I was here was 28 years ago, and the decor is still the typical Chinese style. The food is typical Chinese cuisine, there is now also an extensive dim sum menu and special dishes on the menu. As a welcome there was a small mini spring roll and a plum liqueur. Had a lunch menu, and a wonton soup extra. The wonton soup was very tasty, and the daily special was a homemade spring roll. The main course was Sichuan-style beef with vegetables in a spicy sauce. A very fair offer and a good portion for lunch. The manager of the house also came to my table and asked if it tasted good, that's still true hospitality. The restaurant wasn't that full at the moment because it was already 2:15 p.m., but a lot of regulars come here to eat. There is a lot of space inside the restaurant, and you can also sit outside on the outdoor terrace I can definitely recommend a good restaurant!

Although they are clean, they are very cramped and the sticky floor suggests that modernization would be desirable in the near future. A big plus of the restaurant is the very good WiFi guest access, which makes it easy to stay online during your stay. The selection of drinks and food leaves nothing to be desired. Our dishes were all served very hot and were extremely tasty. The dishes were well seasoned and aromatic, and special requests were also addressed in a friendly and competent manner. Particularly noteworthy is the quality of the meat variations, which were tender and juicy - a real pleasure. Another highlight is that the food is served on warming plates, which ensures that all food stays hot until the last bite. If requested, extra sauces can also be served, which rounds off the service. In terms of price, the restaurant is on the higher end, but the excellent quality of the food and service fully justifies the cost. We would be happy to come back should we be in the area again. A visit to this restaurant is highly recommended for anyone who values ​​high-quality Asian cuisine and an authentic ambience.

Before my visit today, we were last at Shin Shin in 2020, shortly before the first Corona lockdown. At that time we were very happy with the food, today it was a real disappointment. The duck dishes we ordered were nothing special, just mediocre, and the apple spritzer was very watery. The price-performance ratio is no longer right at all. We won't come back.

Hätten wir vorher die jüngsten Bewertungen gelesen wäre uns diese Enttäuschung erspart geblieben. Aber der Reihe nach : Ein tolles und immer gut gefülltes Chinesisches Lokal in Hamburgs Norden ist - oder sollte man besser sagen war - das Shin Shin . Auf unserer Reise zurück in die alte Heimat gehört es fast zum Pflichttermin wie eine große Steakkette . Wir erlebten ein fast leeres Restaurant und waren erstaunt . Die Preise auf der Karte haben uns umgehauen. Fast 32€ für eine gebratene Ente mit nichts außer einige Wan-Tan Chips . Das Personal konnte uns den Unterschied gegrillte Ente vs. geröstete Ente nicht erklären . Also haben wir jeder eine bestellt um festzustellen- es gab keinen Unterschied . Die Ente - fettig , zäh und nicht kross , kurz vor ekelhaft . Am Reis konnte man nichts falsch machen 🤷‍♂️. Der klebt halt. Fazit : extrem überteuertes minderwertiges Fleisch , nicht vergleichbar mit den Bildern auf der Webseite . Wer sich eine Enttäuschung ersparen will geht nicht hin .

Beef fillet on a hot plate for 33 euros can still be okay. But not if it's not a fillet and has to be so tough. Afterwards I felt sick until breakfast. Not again for a while - thank you.

There are others who offer tastier food and who don't seem quite so fake friendly.

Kellner hat mich wohl falsch verstanden, obwohl er schon seit mindestens 25 Jahren bei Shin shin arbeitet. Egal das Essen war nicht so gut, zu Fette Ente. Fast breiiger Reis. Soße geschmacklos.... Obwohl ich seit über 35 Jahren dort sehr häufig essen gehe, nie wieder Shin shin!!! Für den ganzen Kram, den ich so nicht haben wollte habe 44 € bezahlt. Das war's!!!

Shin Shin was my favorite Chinese restaurant and the food is still great. Unfortunately we were there yesterday with 5 people for a birthday. I asked in advance by email whether it was wheelchair accessible because we had a wheelchair user with us. It was then confirmed to me by email. We then made a reservation 6 weeks in advance and asked for a table a little away from the hustle and bustle because there is also a dog in the family. When we arrived we were directed to a round table, so far everything was fine. The waitress brought us our drinks with a grim face and didn't fill them. Just put down the seltzer or hefeweizen bottles. Her mood didn't improve even when the food was served. Our dog lay quietly next to my chair. The service staff were bothered by this because they kept having to get placemats from a shelf next to our table. The boss (?) came to us and said we should “put the dog in the corner!” He meant a corner of about 50cm in the room. My husband had already been served and wanted to leave. However, the food was very tasty. My mother, who was in a wheelchair, then wanted to go to the toilet. We were shown the way and then there was a disaster. The wheelchair didn't fit through the door. I was very angry because I had specifically asked in advance whether everything was handicapped accessible. I spoke to the boss about it. He said we could use the men's room. We then came through the door of the men's room. A success, but the second door you had to go through to reach the toilets was so narrow again. The evening was over for us and we left the restaurant. We were very disappointed and my mother, who was in a wheelchair, was very embarrassed. There was no apology regarding the false statement that it was handicapped accessible.

One of the oldest and best Chinese restaurants in all of Hamburg. Some of the dishes are beautifully garnished and although they are a bit expensive, they are of high quality. Unfortunately it's a bit out of the way and difficult to reach for guests without a car, but it's still just fine. The wine selection is okay, the service is good and quick and the atmosphere is quiet and Asian-comfortable

Ist leider, leider nicht mehr das was es mal war! Geschmacklich bestenfalls nur noch Durchschnitt und ein wirklich ruppiger, unfreundlicher Service. Man hatte kaum die Jacke ausgezogen, da Stand die Bedienung bereits am Tisch und wollte die Bestellung aufnehmen...und in diesem "Tempo" ging's weiter. Auch das Ambiente ist wirklich in die Jahre gekommen und absolut nicht mehr zeitgemäß. Schade....aber es gibt ja zwischenzeitlich zahlreiche bessere Alternativen!

Essen war OK. Gab leider zu Weihnachten eine kleinere Karte. Hätte gerne das normalste zur Vorspeise genommen (Wan Tan gebacken) leider nicht zu Weihnachten. Und noch nicht einmal ein Glückskeks zum Ende oder ein Pflaum Schnaps.

Die Menge war ok ,aber leider war das Essen aussen warm und innen kalt. Und das traf bei 4 von 4 Essen zu. Bei der Beschwerde wurde uns gesagt das wohl alles in Ordnung ist. Ich muss sagen ,das ich Shin Shin seit Anfang der 1970 kenne. Nach der Beschwerde versuchte uns die Bedienung zu Ignorieren. Wir werden nach diesem Abend das Shin Shin auch Ignorieren.

Essen sehr gut - Ente. Service sehr gut - nett und freundlich, zudem Geschenke aufgrund Geburtstag. Ambiente sehr gut - wir saßen an einem Drehtisch. Sehr vorteilhaft in großer Gruppe. Abzug jedoch aufgrund sehr hoher Preise. Aus meiner Sicht sind diese übermäßig hoch angesetzt.

Die Speisen sind einfach gut und preiswert. Im Raum Poppenbüttel und Sasel gibt es keinen Besseren.

Leider nicht mehr so wie es mal war! Unfreundliche Begrüßung, falsches Essen , Ananas musste man auf der Ente suchen, Reis war kalt, Bedienung unfreundlich, mussten 132€ für 6 Personen zahlen, rundeten auf 140€ auf, kein Dankeschön!!! Wir hatten das Gefühl eine Massenabfertigung, schade!

Das ShinShin ist sehr in die Jahre gekommen. Unser Essen "Knuspriges Rotbarschfilet" nicht toll. Geschätzt 70 % Panade, 30 % Fischanteil. Personal ist sehr freundlich.

Sehr leckeres Essen, guter Service. Wir haben uns wohl gefühlt und kommen gerne wieder. Es ist durchaus üblich, die Reste der sehr großen Portionen mitzunehmen.

Alles perfekt, bis auf das triste, kahle Aquarium im Eingangsbereich. Mir liegt Tierwohl sehr am Herzen (sind schließlich unsere Schutzbefohlenen) - habe dies auch im Restaurant deponiert. Gemütliches Ambiente trotz Größe. Die veganen Sojaspeisen – ich habe das vegane Lamm probiert – sind innovativ und schmecken fein, wenn man eine bestimmte Konsistenz und umami Geschmack ohne Tierleid haben möchte. Service war super!

Ein absoluter Genuss! Das Shin Shin hat meine Erwartungen übertroffen und mich mit einer faszinierenden Auswahl an exquisiten chinesischen Gerichten verzaubert. Jeder Bissen war eine kulinarische Offenbarung. Die Aromen waren perfekt ausbalanciert, und die Frische der Zutaten war unübertroffen. Der Service war herausragend – aufmerksam, freundlich und äußerst professionell. Das Personal sorgte dafür, dass wir uns vom Moment des Betretens bis zum Abschied rundum wohl fühlten. Die Atmosphäre ist einladend und angenehm, perfekt für eine entspannte und dennoch elegante Mahlzeit. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich die Vielfalt der Speisekarte, die für jeden Geschmack etwas bietet. Ich kann das Shin Shin uneingeschränkt empfehlen und freue mich schon jetzt darauf, bald wiederzukommen, um weitere köstliche Gerichte zu probieren. Ein absolutes Juwel unter den Restaurants in Hamburg.

Das Essen ist schon wirklich sehr eingedeutscht und zudem einem Restaurant nicht angemessen fanden wir (3 Erwachsene). Es war lecker, aber nicht so wirklich asiatisch, schwer zu beschreiben. Ambiente sehr gut und urig, Service sehr gut.

Das Essen ist hervorragend! Ente knusprig, Hähnchen ebenso und tolles Gemüse. Wir finden das der Service manchmal etwas freundlicher sein könnte. Sie sind aber schnell und sehr aufmerksam. Das Restaurant ist ganz klassisch chinesisch dekoriert mit Drachen und Schnörkeln etc.

Bei der Bewertung gibt es glaube ich nicht mehr viel zu sagen. Tolles Restaurant mit sehr freundlicher und zuvorkommender Bewirtung. Das Restaurant ist nicht das günstigste, dafür stimmt das ganze drum und dran und das Essen ist super. Weiter so.

Chinesische Speisen werden in einem originellem Ambiente serviert. Die Speisen sind von bester Qualität und haben mir sehr gut geschmeckt. Das serviceorientierte Personal ist sehr freundlich und schnell. Einziger Kritikpunkt: die Preise sind sehr hoch.

Ich war jetzt bestimmt 35 Jahre nicht mehr dort. Gefühlt hat sich rein gar nichts verändert. Hatte das eigentlich gehofft. Das Essen ist gut, aber mir fehlt die Innovation. Vielleicht ist das aber auch das Geheimnis seit bestimmt 50 Jahren am Markt zu sein und immer noch gut besucht, bzw. auch da zu sein, während andere schon lange weg sind vom Markt.

Besuchte kürzlich das ShinShin, das in der Stadt ein bisschen als Legende gilt. Trotz seines leicht altmodischen Charmes spürt man die reiche Geschichte und die Tradition, die dieses Restaurant mit sich bringt. Die Gerichte, die serviert werden, sind allesamt schmackhaft. Auch wenn das Dekor ein wenig in die Jahre gekommen ist, verleiht es dem Ort eine besondere Note. Der Service war durchweg respektvoll und aufmerksam, und es war offensichtlich, dass viele der Angestellten schon seit Jahren dort arbeiten und ihre Gäste schätzen. Insgesamt eine wunderbare Erfahrung, die ich jedem empfehlen würde, der die klassische chinesische Küche in einem Ambiente mit Geschichte genießen möchte.
