Schatull in Gengenbach

Beautiful restaurant in the old town, would gladly return...

We've been coming here for 7 years now. Always satisfied. Today, however, we were totally disappointed. First, the waitress sat us downstairs, despite having a reserved table, and asked us to leave at 7:00 PM because it was reserved. We then politely asked if we could go upstairs, to which she replied with an annoyed "yes." Upstairs, we found a table reserved in our name... hmmmm, weird... incomprehensible. She then made us wait until my husband got up and went downstairs. Then our food arrived... my meal was a complete disappointment. I had ordered a salad platter (various fresh salads with yogurt dressing) and chicken breast strips. That's what it said on the menu. But what I got was a huge pile of green salad, a tablespoon of carrots and radish, and the chicken breast strips. The whole thing for €17.40. By mixed salad, I don't just mean green salad that fills the entire plate!!!!! Disappointing!!!!!

Last weekend, four of us went to dinner at Schatull. Upon entering the restaurant, the waitress made a very conspicuous, bored impression and pointed out to us where our table was upstairs with a gesture that made me want to leave immediately. Our drinks were brought to our table in a bored manner, and when we ordered our food, the manager of the restaurant supposedly came over. She briefly left while taking down the food to set the neighboring tables. The salad was served with mostly ready-made ingredients, lettuce leaves with dark spots, and a store-bought salad dressing. Our meals were served with overly dark, burnt side dishes, and the meat was neither juicy nor well-seasoned. Furthermore, the food was drenched in a sauce that didn't match the look or taste at all. I then ordered more cream sauce because my meal was extremely dry, which shortly after arrived at the table was lukewarm and, of course (what else) with ready-made sauce powder. In terms of taste and appearance, our food was a perfect match for the service. The pictures on the website absolutely do not reflect the actual food. We would have loved to take photos of our food and add them to our review as proof. All in all, we cannot recommend this otherwise cozy, rustic restaurant.

The food was quite okay. The service couldn't be called service. I've rarely experienced such ignorance towards guests. Once we entered the restaurant, the manager had her employee braid her hair at the table. The wait continued, and we had to wait until we were assigned a table. Then we waited forever, even though it was quiet. No one even asked if we wanted anything else. Another time, there was no ice in the Aperol. When I asked, they said they had forgotten to buy some. When I said it was part of the service, the manager sent the very grumpy employee to the kitchen, who then came back with a leftover ice cube and then, in front of me, dug her hands into the bag. I was given the ice cubes in a water glass to carry myself. When we wanted to pay later (we were on the upper floor), the still unfriendly waitress told us we had to go down to the manager to pay... She stood at the counter and then took the money without asking if everything was okay. It was the first time I didn't leave a tip... Service was nonexistent...

Food good, service moderately good

Had a good, inexpensive meal there today; it was great value for money. A feather duster wouldn't hurt, and yesterday's fries were still on the bench. If you go there once, you can't go wrong, but once is enough 😉

A very cozy little restaurant with delicious food and a variety of beers. Reservations are best made in advance. Highly recommended.

Nice ambiance... Otherwise, unfortunately, a disappointment... When I ordered my Aperol, I received it with a rather dirty and very disgusting straw... When I noticed this, the waitress just said "Oh"... And a main course was completely forgotten and never brought... We certainly won't be coming back and won't recommend it to anyone.

Had great food and service on 3 separate visits in 2024. Back in 2025 and the same holds true. They shut down for 2 weeks between September 1-15 to recharge. A common ocurrence in Germany.

Great service at Carnival, but today with eight guests, it seemed overwhelmed. I waited for fifteen minutes in vain for service and then left.

The food was good, but not the best by a long shot. The service, in my case, was not good; unfriendly and very, very slow. They don't accept credit cards, which isn't so unusual in Germany, but it's worth considering.

It's a shame, even the nice ambiance doesn't help much. One waitress was friendly, but the other was unmotivated and listless. When guests greet you in a friendly manner, it would be nice if the staff returned the greeting; a small smile goes a long way. It seemed rather dismissive and unwelcoming. We actually wanted to eat here, but after ordering our drinks, I had to use the restroom. On the way there, however, the interior was anything but clean: crumbs, notes, and tissues were lying around, and it didn't look as if it had been done recently. It takes away your appetite, and you don't even want to imagine what the kitchen must be like. After the not-so-cheap drinks, we paid and left without any food. Unfortunately, a real disappointment.

There were three people serving, each with very different motivations (resulting in an average rating of 4. The food ranged from 3 to 5.) There were three of us there. The quality of the food was very similar. However, the trend here was more towards the poor. The Pastorale vegetable plate was particularly negative. The vegetables were simple, tasteless frozen goods. We were very disappointed. The schnitzel on the Kermit plate was unfortunately burnt on the underside. We also had cheese spaetzle, which was average. We loved the ambiance; when the weather was good, we could sit in the lovely courtyard.

Good place for dinner (which is what I did). They speak Spanish, the service is fast, the food is very good, and the prices are average for this area.

We ate on a very hot day. The restaurant doesn't have air conditioning. The food was good. We liked everything. However, the service was very slow. Everything took a long time, even bringing the check. They didn't clear our table before we ate. I understand it was a hot day, but I think the service could be more responsive.

Let's start with the positive: the food was delicious and the ambiance has its own charm. But, unfortunately, the service has deteriorated significantly in recent years. Plates weren't cleared for ages, no one asked if everything was okay, drinks only came when you actively asked for them, and sometimes they were slow. Paying the bill took 30 minutes, despite us asking several times. If you only have two servers, you need to come up with a different system or reduce the number of tables.

The food is good. Now here's the thing: The staff is overwhelmed. Plates stay on the table forever. We thought we'd try again to see if it's improved. Unfortunately, we were once again very disappointed. If nothing changes, they can close. It's better.

The low scoring on the service is not related with their attitude which is on. The problem is that with only two waiters and few people at the kitchen it is not possible to have a restaurant open in summer (high season). . No clear order to serve the guests. Last ones are the first ones. I don’t recommend if you see a lot of people already sitted. Chose another one. Also consider they accept only cash. Despite of that food was ok so only if not crowded

Run by a charming Brazilian woman who understands Spanish, we enjoyed typical local dishes with excellent service and a reasonable price. The place is charming.

We went to the place because of the reviews. Very, very disappointed. Very unpleasant service. It took more than 45 minutes for them to take our order. From the moment they took our order, it took another 50 minutes for the dishes to arrive (a salad, three breaded chicken breasts, and a toast). The food was good, but I wouldn't go back, and I don't recommend coming after trying it.

The food was practically unseasoned. The rösti, in particular, lacked any flavor. The ambiance seems pleasant at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it's noticeable that the upholstery on the benches inside is completely dirty.

Beware of tourist traps! We were dazzled by the many positive reviews and wanted to have lunch at Schatull in Gengenbach – a big mistake! We were immediately taken aback upon arrival: A family in front of us politely asked for a table (there were several available!), but were turned away by the overwhelmed waitress with a rude "no room." When we asked for a table ourselves, we were told to "just sit down." In the 90 minutes we were there, at least ten guests left because they simply weren't served. The manager and the entire staff seemed completely out of place – unfriendly, aloof, and clueless. We've rarely experienced anything like that. The food? Disappointing. The taste was cafeteria-level, the appearance was lackluster. Long waits (over an hour for the food!), no requests for drinks, no friendliness – nothing at all. Cash only, which didn't improve the impression. At the same time, the restaurant right next door was being expertly run by a single (!) friendly Italian waiter – with heart, speed, and wit. No wonder many guests switched there without hesitation. We should have, too. Conclusion: Anyone visiting Gengenbach and looking for good food should steer clear of Schatull. The good reviews in no way reflect reality – a complete disappointment.

If you have to eat in Gengenbach, don't even think about it. This is a very good place. It's located in a very quiet inner square, and you can try German cuisine; everything was delicious. I recommend trying the rosti; there's a variety of local wines as well. You can immediately tell it's a good place because all the townspeople are there. We were surprised that the prices were a little higher than what we had seen online, but in the end, it wasn't exorbitant, and it was very reasonable.

The food is delicious. The service is terrible. The staff is sometimes very unmotivated. Some people even forgot their orders. The atmosphere is nice and peaceful. Cash only! We're still waiting for the staff to come and settle the bill 😂

Delicious food in the backyard, quiet yet right in Gengenbach's city center.

The food was very good and plentiful. We tried a combination platter with burgers and chicken, salad, and some delicious spinach ravioli. It's surprising that in the summer of 2025, you won't be able to pay by card in Germany.

We're wondering why the Schatull has so many positive reviews. During our visit, two waitresses were on duty, who seemed very listless and not very friendly. I opted for the Maultaschen (ravioli) with chive cream sauce. I got Maultaschen (ravioli) with a cheap hollandaise sauce from a large package (absolutely disgusting). When I asked the waitress why there wasn't chive cream sauce, she simply replied rudely that she always made it that way. When we pointed out that the menu listed it as chive cream sauce, she took the menu in disbelief and walked away without a word. After that, she didn't address the matter further and simply ignored us. My partner's fried potatoes were badly burnt, completely over-oiled, and tasted burnt. When it came to paying, despite repeated friendly remarks, we had to wait more than 40 minutes before the waitress took the time to take the check. There wasn't even an apology for this. The entire meal and the unfriendly manner of the two waitresses were definitely unsatisfactory. Hence (unfortunately) only one star.

We received wonderful service from the person who seemed to be the manager. A charming woman who spoke Spanish. We were very comfortable, unhurried, and we loved everything we ate. The price wasn't bad. We recommend it.

The food was good, but the service was very poor. Several tables were served incorrectly. And no one even bothered to ask if we wanted more drinks. I had to go to the waiter for the bill, and he didn't recognize me.

Food was great! But perhaps they are understaffed as we felt totally ignored. My soup came without a spoon and despite asking it never arrived. We enjoyed a lovely seat in the shady courtyard. The meal was delicious. The fried potatoes were especially good, but the Maultaschen (ravioli) with a delicate chive cream sauce were definitely not to be recommended. Maultaschen swimming in hollandaise sauce from a tetra pack with a sprinkling of chives on top...it could definitely be better with little effort.

The tarte flambée was okay, but definitely nothing special. The waitress was visibly listless, wore sunglasses, and first laid out cutlery for us, but then took it away again – without explanation. The general service was also inattentive and unfriendly. The restroom was unfortunately not clean during our visit, which only added to the overall impression. Particularly irritating: All guests had to go inside to pay because no one came to their table. The manager was sitting there having lunch in the middle of a busy business – she just kept eating while taking the money. Not a particularly professional impression. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it – beautiful location or not.

One waitress was a bit unfriendly, didn't seem to enjoy her job, and was very listless. The two tables next to us both arrived significantly later... The food was taken immediately and arrived quite quickly, even though we hadn't even ordered yet because no one else was coming. The food, as well as the ambiance inside and out, were excellent.

The waitress, of Brazilian origin, is charming and makes an effort to speak Spanish. The food is quite good. And the atmosphere is calm and pleasant. Recommended.

We had a perfect lunch at Schatull. The ambiance is stylish, whether outside in the summer or inside in the winter. Cozy and decorated with great attention to detail. The staff is always friendly, but sometimes a bit understaffed ;-) The menu offers a wonderful selection of regional dishes, Prägelde, Tarte Flambée, salads, and meat specialties. The excellent value for money is particularly noteworthy. All in all, always a great experience. We'll definitely be back and can wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant!

Eight of us were here on a hot summer evening. It was amazing how the manager and one server managed the rush. The tarte flambée were very good, so the long wait was well worth it.

We really liked the food. Alexandra gave us recommendations and explained the food a little bit. The lady was very friendly. Boiled potatoes and fried pork loin with melted cheese. We loved it. Everything was delicious in a cool setting. Very original.

I was back in Gengenbach after 10 years – and of course, I had to go back to my favorite restaurant from back then. It's hard to believe: Chef Marko not only remembered me, but even fun times we had together over 20 years ago! That's something very rare – genuine hospitality with heart. The tarte flambée was just like it was back then: first-class! The quality of the food is top-notch, and the price-performance ratio is absolutely right. Marko and his wife are both incredibly welcoming – you immediately feel welcome and in good hands here. The restaurant is a bit hidden away, but that's precisely what makes it so charming. It's comfortably furnished inside with lots of wood on two floors – a truly comfortable place. For me, this traditional restaurant remains my first port of call in Gengenbach. If you don't stop here, you're missing out!

The previous 4.7 reviews don't reflect reality. The courtyard looks nice, but the restaurant itself is completely cluttered and dusty, and the restrooms are very dirty and broken. The food was okay. The service leaves a lot to be desired.

Honest service. The hollandaise sauce comes from a packet. The mushroom cream sauce tastes like powder, and the second order of plaice was simply forgotten.

One of the best local restaurants in that part of Germany. Variety of dishes, affordable prices, great atmosphere. You will find major visitors which are local, almost no tourists there. The beer is great. Highly recommended this place!

We had dinner in the casket. We made a reservation the day before and unfortunately we still sat at a table that seemed “so seated”. When we made a reservation we wanted something different. One of the two waitresses seemed overwhelmed and stressed, which made an unfriendly impression. The food in general was delicious and we were satisfied so far. For me, the dish could have used more spice. When I asked for pepper and salt, I received a stressed response: "It's all gone, I have to check if there's anything left" -> that implies to me that it wasn't just me that wasn't seasoned enough. In general, it's nice to sit on the terrace & the food is good and reasonably priced.

Very cozy place, very well decorated. Very friendly and efficient waitress. We tried the tomato soup, a couple of flammenkuchen (which is like a very typical pizza from this area but thinner and with cream cheese) and a holzhackerbrett that included a steak and a burger. Everything spectacular. Highly recommended. You have to search a little for the place because it is not on the main street but it is worth it.

It's nice to sit in the yard, and that's about it for the positive. The beer comes in a completely damaged and smeared stein. The food was more of a canteen level. We had the Rösti with Zurich Geschnetzeltes and the one with feta and tomatoes. The latter were also drowned in grated cheese. The portions were also relatively small. Better go somewhere else, it doesn't taste good here.

One of our drinks had a brown, almost stale lime and mint that we wouldn't use anymore. The waitress was very abrupt and didn't give the impression that she wanted to do her job. Beer was okay. But nothing more.

Unfortunately, service and food are only mediocre. In particular, the dishes we ordered were ok, but nothing more than that. The salad for over 6.5 euros was a joke. The atmosphere outside on the farm is very nice.

We were 4 people. Food was good, but the portions could have been a little larger. The waitresses were very friendly, but it was quite full in the restaurant and so we always had to wait a long time or call for someone to come, for example. B. Drink was empty.

All the top reviews are hard to understand for me, maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes. The cheese spaetzle was almost tasteless and a manageable portion, the tarte flambée was very reminiscent of frozen products and we had to wait a relatively long time for our food. It was a bit too expensive for that. Positive: Nice staff and rustic atmosphere.

Good quality food at a reasonable price in a nice place. The waitresses were very friendly and cordial. It helped us a lot that one of them spoke Portuguese.

Wow, that has diminished in the last few years... Service was anything but convincing, a hectic mess with moving chairs and seating people, my wife's food came wrong, so we ate separately because mine was already on the table. My steak only arrived lukewarm anyway. Prices increased significantly, stein with beer was anything but clean. And the food was also rather mediocre, so I claim I could do it better at home. Sorry, but I don't have to go out to eat. No card payment

Really good food and great, fast service. We spent €40 between us ordering two typical dishes with meat and a beer. 🍻 we didn't regret our choice to stop in this town for lunch at all. A very kind waitress also tries to speak a few words of Italian and from what I understand she knows Spanish very well.

We had an excellent experience at this restaurant. Karla made us very welcome, she is very friendly. Besides, the beer is incredible, from u not very good quality. She speaks German, English and Portuguese. You just have to take into account that they do not accept credit cards for payment.
