Restaurant Zum Stern in Monschau

Wir brauchten glutenfreies Essen. Danach hatten wir gefragt. Leider war dann die Haxe nur außen heiss innen am Knochen war sie noch gefroren. Wir haben es bemängelt, das hat überhaupt nicht interessiert. Nie mehr

So schlecht haben wir noch nicht gegessen. Wir hätten die Bewertungen vorher lesen sollen. Der Kartoffelpüree war völlig geschmacklos, vermutlich aus der Tüte, das Sauerkraut eine einzige Pampe, die bei einem Gericht als Ersatz für das Püree bestellten Bratkartoffeln entpuppten sich als wässrige Salzkartoffeln (für die auch noch ein Aufpreis von 2,50 € berechnet wurde!),  die kurz in der Pfanne aufgewärmt wurden, das Tonic-Water war vermutlich vom Discounter, wurde lauwarm, fast ohne Kohlensäure direkt im Glas serviert; der Service war pampig und langsam und zu allem Überfluss scheint die Familie, die den Laden führt, den Gastraum als Wohnzimmer (einschl. lautstarker Unterhaltung und schreienden Kindern) gemacht zu haben. Das ganze zu vollkommen überzogenen Preisen (und nur Barzahlung!) - eine Schande für Monschau, wo man durchaus lecker (Café Hüftgold) bis hervorragend (Schnabuleum) essen kann.

Nice environment for the restaurant. Good food but the “Haxe” was still cold so not what you would expect from such a nice restaurant. The other meals were ok but for sure not a highlight.

It is next to the river, the views are beautiful from the hotel room you can see the square and the river. Excellent service, the staff has extensive knowledge of languages, which is very important and pleasant. I would definitely return.

The restaurant was disappointing and seemed unprofessional to me. The chicken schnitzel was still raw. I was afraid of salmonella.

We were not able to inspect the hotel rooms. The beer tastes good, the cocktails don't. Location is 1a and the staff is friendly. Dogs are very welcome. Prices are slightly too high, so a well-intentioned 4 out of 5 points and we will definitely come back

Probably the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in. The quality of the food is 1.) poor and 2.) the cheapest product you can offer. Bread with aioli was the cheapest baked baguette. Cost 5.90 euros. The olives for 4.90 euros can only be cheap mass-produced goods, as it felt like a whole glass (at least 25 pieces) was served at the neighboring table. The schnitzels are clearly finished products, the Monschau mustard sauce looked like mustard from a canister. Dried herbs were sprinkled over it. Even the 1980s sideboards were more attractive and better. The consistency of the game ragout had nothing to do with ragout. Visually so unappealing and an overcooked mess. Simply a complete disaster! In addition, the two main courses were served 15 minutes apart. If you're going out to eat as a couple, that's pretty wrong. The neighboring table was no different. If you make a criticism, the staff will also be abusive and rude. Even more remarkable and insolence is the operator's response to the review. They claim that we ate the dishes and then didn't want to pay. This is a blatant lie! The “ragout” wasn’t even touched. Tried the mustard schnitzel. We still wanted to pay and go to another restaurant. The operator said guests like us didn't need it and didn't take any payment. You can't lie more shamelessly here! And it's also a lie that the neighboring table didn't complain! Outrageous!

Personal der deutschen Sprache nicht mächtig, nach 20 min konnte die Bestellung erst aufgegeben werden.Obwohl der Cappuccino in der Karte stand wollte er uns nur einen Kaffee anbieten, die Frage nach frischem Pfefferminz - Tee mit Honig wurde mit ja beantwortet, serviert wurde der Teebeutel mit Zucker.es gibt genug Ausweichlokale.

Das wohl schlechteste Restaurant in dem ich je gegessen habe. Die Qualität der Speisen ist 1.) schlecht und 2.) die billigste Ware, die man anbieten kann. Brot mit Aioli war das billigste Aufback-Baguette. Kostenpunkt 5,90 Euro. Die Oliven für 4,90 Euro können nur billige Massenware sein, da gefühlt ein ganzes Glas (mindestens 25 Stück) am Nachbartisch serviert wurden. Die Schnitzel sind erkennbar Fertigprodukte, die Monschauer Senfsoße sah aus wie Senf aus dem Kanister. Dazu wurden Trockenkräuter darüber gestreut. Selbst die Anrichte der 1980er Jahre war ansprechender und besser. Das Wildragout hatte mit Ragout in der Konsistenz nichts zu tun. Optisch so unansprechend und eine zerkoche Pampe. Einfach eine reinste Katastrophe! Dazu kam noch, dass die beiden Hauptgänge mit einem Zeitversatz von 15 Minuten serviert wurden. Wenn man zu zweit essen geht, ziemlich daneben. Dem Nachbartisch erging es nicht anders. Wenn man eine Kritik anbringt, dann wird das Personal zudem ausfallend und frech.

Beschwerde, wir sind gegangen bevor wir überhaupt angefangen haben zu Essen - die Chefin ist der Oberhammer und bezeichnet sich selbst als „bestes Haus am Platz“ ich sag : Katastrophe - da merkt man das der typische Touri nur 1 Tag kommt und nie wieder einen Fuß reinsetzt . . . We had reserved a table two days in advance. We saw how the appointment was entered. And then... we find ourselves in front of a closed restaurant - day off! What else can you say about that...

We only visited the restaurant so one star for the room. Even though we arrived shortly before closing time, we were warmly welcomed and were able to enjoy our drinks in peace. The restaurant is harmoniously adapted and very cozy. We didn't eat anything. Dogs are also welcome there

We ate at the restaurant. The food was very good. But the quality of the services was very very low. The table wasn't full but we waited 15 minutes because the waiter didn't wanted to take our order. He's behaviour was very unapropiate and he luck of experience. If you want to eat something good and to pe served very well try something else, don't seat there.

The first evening of our weekend we had dinner at Zum Stern. Other restaurants have not been able to surpass this. Friendly staff and a delicious Senfschnitzel!

The food was very good and they have very good service.

We were just in the restaurant. The food was not convincing and is not justified by the rather high prices and the long waiting time. Some of the dishes were missing components that were on the menu. The taste was okay, but it tasted like mass-produced goods. The service was still very nice and accommodating, but we wouldn't come back.

This restaurant is threatening me with slander for a review I posted over 5 years ago and is attempting to remove negative reviews. What I am writing now is factual. I wrote that review after a visit to the restaurant and can back this up with photos I took at the time. The review I wrote was an honest opinion of the poor food and service, and it is within my consumer rights to express that opinion. I am sure this review will not be approved due to the bullying tactics of this business but if it is approved I would advise any future guests to take photos of your food and receipt and upload these when you review the place in case they threaten to sue you too.

Despite the negative review, we came here for dinner and a beer. The staff was very courteous and friendly and responded openly to our inquiries and referred us to the new owner. Food and atmosphere was great! The invoice was sent to me by email when I asked. I would come back at any time!

Nice terrace on the market and on the water, centrally located. Friendly staff and order came quickly.

We were there for dinner. My husband had the grilled knuckle. Shortly before the end he noticed that the knuckle was still frozen inside. There was no discount because he had eaten almost all of the knuckle. He got a free beer. It might be a good idea to check the inside of the knuckle with a thermometer to see if it is cooked through before serving.

Be careful, the knuckle out of the oven is often still frozen on the inside. Location is perfect, the rest is forgettable.

We were only guests in the beer garden as restaurant guests. The location is in the middle of the old town and in our opinion is only suitable for having a refreshing drink. We ordered spaghetti, salads and Wiener schnitzel with fries and beer. The salads cost a whopping €16 for the size of a soup plate without bread/baguette - every pizzeria salad is in a different league. The schnitzel €17.90 was the size of a halved roll, the fries fit on a saucer and tasted anything but delicious. The spaghetti tasted good but was more of a children's portion. The beer was bad, only a “Capricciosa” salad was well received by the group. The service and the location were OK, typical tourist scam with a miserable price/performance ratio. Better to move on...

Unfriendly staff, dirty terrace, beer was warm, menus old and worn. Basically there is no reason to eat and drink here. The food is bland and overcooked mass-produced goods.

The Hotel zum Stern is idyllically located in Monschau. The service, food and beer left a lot to be desired. Instead of the Schnitzel Gabriel, we were served the Schnitzel Hawaii. The other guest probably got the schnitzel that my husband had ordered. Since the waiting time was about 40 minutes, my husband ended up eating the wrong schnitzel. There was almost no apology. The Soraya noodles were so-so. I couldn't find the ham. The beer was lukewarm. We wouldn't visit the restaurant again

If I could give half a star I would. Only ordered drinks, coke and coffee. Returned the coke, which was unspiked and undrinkable. New coke was better but not real coke. When paying, the waiter told me it was 8 euros. Seemed strong to us. We checked and it was cheaper. When confronted he admitted that it was 6.80 euros. We like tips, but we don't give a cent extra to people who scam you in front of you. In short, be careful what you spend here and what the costs are. By the way, the restaurant next door is much better.

We thought we were sitting at a different restaurant, but the layout of the terrace is unclear. Good, positive further. Friendly host! Neat and polite. The service (man, mid 30s? Thick beard and dark hair) very poor. Doesn't feel like it, doesn't talk back and is very disinterested. We ask twice for a sauce and he starts smoking. Ignores you..! Cold beer? I do not think so. Lukewarm beer. Just kept it outside the refrigerator. Neighbors next to us also complained about this. Too bad, something so simple. Schnitzel was tasty, sauce old/overcooked and the fries were soft and seemed to have been sitting for a while. Cordon blue was not nice and crispy. Sad for the host who does his best, but the man at the counter is really not up to it. It wasn't busy and we fully understand, but this man throws your food down and goes and smokes on the terrace. Wrong drink, no card payment. When asked where you can pay by card, “nowhere”. The restaurant next door could do it, so we walked over to eat.

We should have read the reviews here beforehand - they speak for themselves - rarely have we seen such bad restaurant reviews. We were in the restaurant yesterday - sat outside. At first we waited a long time for a waiter, which wasn't due to a lack of staff, but rather due to motivation (many frustrated guests went in to pay after their meal because they didn't want to wait any longer. We provided goulash soup and pork knuckle. We waited again - after more than 30 minutes the food finally came. The small plate of goulash soup was mediocre in taste, but for 9.50 you could actually expect more. But the real deal was the pork knuckle at the hefty price of €26.50 (!!! - in general, the prices were more like a tourist rip-off). It was barely recognizable as a knuckle of pork, the meat was completely overcooked and falling apart! Accordingly, it tasted more than bland. According to the menu, it was even supposed to be cured pork knuckle - either that wasn't true, or it was so overcooked that any cure had disappeared along with the taste. I have never experienced anything like it. Plus the puree, which also tasted completely bland and almost tasteless. After the waiter finally showed up to pay, we kindly pointed out the deficiencies. But he just completely ignored it. It's a shame that so many tourists still fall for it - in places with normal competition, a restaurant like this wouldn't last a month.

Wir hätten vorher die Bewertungen hier lesen sollen - diese sprechen ja für sich - selten so schlechte Restaurantrezensionen gesehen. Wir waren gestern in dem Restaurant - haben außen gesessen. Zunächst haben wir lange auf einen Kellner gewartet, was nicht an zu wenig Personal lag, sondern eher an der Motivation (viele frustrierte Gäste sind nach dem Essen schon zum Zahlen reingegangen, weil sie nicht länger warten wollten. Wir haben eine Gulaschsuppe und das Eisbein gestellt. Abermals haben wir dann gewartet - nach über 30 Min. kam das Essen endlich. Der kleine Teller Gulaschsuppe war geschmacklich mäßig, für 9,50 Kann man eigentlich mehr erwarten. Aber der Hammer war das Eisbein zum stolzen Preis von 26,50€(!!! - überhaupt waren die Preise eher Touristenabzock-Niveau). Als Eisbein war es kaum noch zu erkennen, das Fleisch war völlig zerkocht und zerfallen! Dementsprechend hat es auch mehr als fade geschleckt. Es sollte sogar lt. Karte gepökeltes Eisbein sein - entweder das stimmte nicht, oder es war dermaßen ausgekocht, dass zu dem Geschmack auch jegliche Pökelung verschwunden ist. Sowas habe ich noch nie erlebt. Dazu das Püree, das auch total fade und fast geschmacksneutral geschmeckt hat. Nachdem der Kellner irgendwann endlich zum Zahlen erschienen ist, haben wir ihn auf die Mängel freundlich hingewiesen. Das hat er aber einfach völlig ignoriert. Schade, dass so viele Touristen dennoch darauf reinfallen dort - an Orten mit normalem Wettbewerb würde sich so ein Restaurant keinen Monat halten.

On the way back from holiday we had a bite to eat in "zum Stern" but what a deception! In my opinion, the coke (2x) was from another planet, really not drinkable and certainly not Coca Cola Main courses were actually not worthy of one star. My "Senfschnitzel" was really the highlight of HOW NOT TO DO IT. A soggy meat bomb with an overgrown layer of mustard sauce of an inferior quality...yuck..yuck. A bowl of soggy fries and a bowl of lettuce from which small animals tried to find their way up and were also drenched in a nasty sauce. We thought "debit card and go" ... no, so it was not possible to pay card, only cash 🤨 Empty pockets, clutter up bags and finally be able to pay in cash. EINMAL aber NIE NIE wieder in "zum Stern"

After 30 minutes still no single contact with the unprofessional looking staff. They only serve some tables, other ones get no attention. They rather stay inside. The tables they so serve takes a while and it looks like they don't understand anything. Menu has a weird font which makes reading it impossible. After waiting 40 minutes we left to a better terrace. Better go somewhere else!

We were in the restaurant. Visually appealing and the food is okay. However, the service is not recommended. Despite high consumption (180 euros for 9 people), we were insulted by the landlady as robbers because the children were supposed to share a plate. I have never seen such behavior in my life and I am still outraged.

The restaurant has probably had a new owner for two months. In summer it is a beautiful and pleasant outdoor location in a beer garden style and in the center of Monschau right by the stream. The chairs are very comfortable. Every single service person was super friendly, courteous and concerned about the guest's well-being. The food was excellent both visually and culinary-wise in taste and visually aesthetically presented. A small change to our order was carried out and served as requested. The food was served by us (three people) at the same time after a short wait. If we go to Monschau again to get new mustard from the mustard mill, we will be happy to visit this location again!!!!!! We cannot provide any information about the hotel because we were not hotel guests. The toilet was very clean!!! The only drawback to this successful stay with delicious food: Despite the age of card payments, you can only pay in cash...

We wanted an espresso and apple strudel. The coffee came after 10 minutes and the apple strudel 20 minutes later. That was soon after what other guests had to wait unfortunately. So, never here again

We were outside as a family today. The tables were clean, everything seemed very well maintained and the service greeted us in a really friendly manner. Upon request, we were only allowed to sit for a while with the drinks we had ordered, i.e. without eating anything, and a non-alcoholic cocktail was also served. During the time we were there, various really tasty looking dishes were served to other guests and none of the guests appeared unhappy or hungry afterwards. Unfortunately, we had an appointment to eat at a different location later, so we'll remember the "star" and will definitely come back to eat! Everyone we spoke to was extremely polite, very nice and concerned about our well-being. The interior seemed very cozy and tidy, the toilets were really clean and you could still smell a slight smell of chlorine (which we much prefer to the smell of human remains). A changing table was also set up upon request. For my part, I can't understand the bad reviews. As we were told, the entire team has only been working for a month and a half. The fact that problems can arise at the beginning is normal at every start and certainly the same everywhere else. We'll definitely give the food there another chance and look forward to being guests again. A small addendum because it was stated in a review: The service speaks Spanish. How one can conclude this in Italian is a mystery to me. Maybe swapped restaurants?

We were here for dinner. The ambience is of course great, the location is really beautiful. But that's all that can be said positively. The staff is rude and inattentive and also speaks rather poor German. The food is a disgrace. The pasta carbonara or bolognese we ordered was completely tasteless, and the portions were almost exorbitant for the price asked. The starter we ordered (bread with aioli) came well after the pasta, consisted of five slices of the cheapest supermarket baguette and was therefore also very cheekily priced at 5.80. The apple strudel with vanilla ice cream for 9.50 (!) was, as my sister said, "the disgusting thing I've ever eaten". When paying we were boldly asked for a tip, which we didn't want to give. All in all, a classic tourist trap. Due to the confusing layout of the space, pay close attention to where you sit down. There seem to be better restaurants right next door.

Om 19.40 uur bestel ik een bier en een salade. Het bier komt na 20 minuten: warmer dan lauw. De salade komt niet. De ober pakt een stoel en gaat uitgebreid roken 2 meter van het terras. Ik ga navragen waar het blijft. 'Serieuze problemen in de keuken' zegt de ober. Nogmaals vragen helpt niet. De keuken sluit klanten worden weggestuurd. Om half negen betaal ik voor het bier 5 euro. De ober gaat uit zijn dak. Alle restaurants in Monschau zijn gesloten. Ik ga zonder eten naar bed.

At 7:40 PM I order a beer and a salad. The beer arrives after 20 minutes: warmer than lukewarm. The salad doesn't come. The waiter takes a chair and smokes extensively 2 meters from the terrace. I'm going to ask where it is. "Serious problems in the kitchen," says the waiter. Asking again doesn't help. The kitchen closes customers are turned away. At half past eight I pay 5 euros for the beer. The waiter goes crazy. All restaurants in Monschau are closed. I'm going to bed without dinner.

We were just in the restaurant to eat. Very nice restaurant located right on the river and market. Nice ambience. Attentive and courteous service. And the food was really very tasty! Schnitzel with mustard sauce and calamari - perfect. Always my pleasure!

Now I realize something, my battery was empty. The space outside right by the stream that runs through the town is a 10/10 for the great scenery, but the operators can't do anything about it. (That's the reason for the 2 star) Now to eat, as hungry as I was, I had to have a knuckle, my girlfriend had a schnitzel. Inside, the knuckle was cold and the crust was subpar, the schnitzel was more like Eismann brand, the fries were cold and tasted more frozen than freshly fried. Conclusion, make up your own mind, you can drink a beer well, if you want to eat something you should go to other places. Only cash payment is accepted

Excellent welcome and service for lunch on the terrace next to the water. I was surprised by the previous bad reviews. It is true that these opinions are old and are no longer relevant based on our experience on June 21, 2024. This does not concern the hotel because we did not sleep there, but the interior restaurant rooms that we passed through seemed clean and not dated: the establishment has definitely changed completely!

Since I wasn't sure about the allocation of tables outside, we ended up at Stern today. The Italian waiters tried to spread some good vibes. The mustard schnitzel was a disgrace for €20, and I say that even though I'm really not picky. A pudding-like dollop of sauce on the schnitzel, tasteless fries with no salt on the side. The mustard was definitely not from Monschau, I grew up with it. The whole thing stuck in my throat, it was so dry. The Fanta was non-carbonated. Next time I will go somewhere else.

The two stars are because of the friendly staff. The guys on the terrace really deserve 5 stars, but the kitchen absolutely does not. My friend ordered staek. This was supposed to be medium, but was served very well done. We sent it back to the kitchen twice and it came back well done the third time. We just left it as it was. They did not charge for my friend's dish. The boys on the terrace have apologized several times, and they really deserve kudos. When ordering the drinks we explicitly asked what brand of cola it was. The cola is sold as Coca-Cola, but it clearly wasn't and there was no sting in it either. The wine was served in dirty glasses and when the bill came we could only pay with cash. Payment by debit card was not possible. Definitely not recommended!!! Hopefully the staff employed will find another job soon.

Went to this restaurant for dinner today with 4 people. Table dirty and totally sticky. Eating is an absolute zero. One star is still too many. Never again....

Stopping by for supper. Menu looked fine. Some confusion with order, we are English so that is understandably, but not really as we have eaten in restaurants in Germany many times this holiday with no problem. Especial problem with 'die rechnung bitte', which has worked all holiday, fails here as the waiting staff are maybe not German. Waiter a long time to pay. Food was OK, I regret not reading the reviews now!

We got up thirsty and looked for and found our happiness in the next restaurant Waiting for 15 minutes and asking for service didn't help. Overwhelmed staff, no need to be there for the guest? Especially since the waiter has already taken orders at the next table. What a shame!

We had lunch in the restaurant. Everything tasted bland and I had the goulash soup, which didn't deserve its name. It was prepared with canned meat and mushrooms. And it didn't taste good either.

Wir hatten eine Cola und ein Wasser mit Sprudel. Beides kaum Kohlensäure. Die Cocktails waren in Ordnung. Zum Essen hatten wir hatten ein Schnitzel Wiener Art und ein Jägerschnitzel. Der Beilagen Salat wurde uns als Vorspeise gebracht. Während der eine in Dressing schwamm, hat der andere nur ein Hauch davon abbekommen. Auf die Schnitzel mit Pommes haben wir über 1 Stunde gewartet. In der Zeit haben wir die Bewertungen gelesen und wollten nur weg. Das Essen war für den Preis viel zu wenig. Die Pommes waren fast roh und hatten kein Salz. Andere Pommes lagen wiederum schon ein paar Mal in der Fritteuse. Das Schnitzel war sehr klein und eher trocken. Zum Zahlen sind wir rein gegangen, da andere Gäste über 20 Minuten auf das Zahlen warteten. Zu zahlen waren 61,60€ als wir 65€ hin legten, weil wir es nicht kleiner hatten, wurde in kürzester Zeit 3x gefragt, ob es so stimmt.

Zeer slecht eten, of aangebrand of nog bevroren, heel onvriendelijk personeel. Men vraagt hoe het smaakt, na kritiek loopt men kwaad weg

Wir waren mit der Familie von 4 Personen dort zum Essen. Wir haben über eine Stunde gewartet, um am Ende ein falsches Gericht zu bekommen. Drei von uns konnten essen, einer musste zuschauen, da die Wartezeit für eine neue Bestellung wieder eine Stunde wäre. Essen war gut, die Lage der Terrasse sehr gut, der Restaurants Chef Mario unfreundlich, grob, unfähig Autokritik auszuüben und hat mit seinen Personal execrabil gesprochen. Wenn der Chef ersetzt wird, kann man vielleicht das Restaurant retten. Schade…

Overall there is some room for improvement. The menus were slapped onto us without much attention. The very young man who served us was otherwise friendly. I'm pretty sure the menu said "mustard schnitzel", but the receipt said mustard schnitzel. I ended up with a schnitzel that only had pure mustard smeared on top. I didn't eat it, my friend then ate it. The fries looked like they had been cooked before and thrown in again. My friend's Cordon Bleu was fine. The location is great. I wish the operators would revise their concept again, because it could be so great there, and bad reviews could also be dealt with, because if I had looked here before, I wouldn't have come here. I visited the restaurant for lunch and encountered a very nice and friendly staff, which created a welcoming atmosphere. However, I was disappointed with the food quality, particularly the paella was very basic and the rice was undercooked . The serving of the drink could have been improved as well. Additionally, the restroom facilities were not up to par and could use some attention.

It's low-end, all the way. At least for our 4 meals... Only out of the freezer food, very expensive for what it is. The staff was rather friendly. I's a nice place and it could be good restaurant... with a little effort ! But now, it's very far from there.

It was the worst restaurant I have ever been to. They charged us 81 euros to drink and eat. The beer was warm and you couldn’t even chew the steak. We paid 80€ and said we were sorry but the service, beer and food wasn’t good. And the waiter said, yeah that’s your problem. So 0 from me and my family.

Correct eten tegen een correcte prijs. Maar je moet geduld hebben (1 uur wachten). De garçon was vriendelijk ondanks dat hij de hele bediening alleen moest doen, hij liep de benen van onder zijn lijf. Ik hoop dat hij voldoende betaald wordt. Jammer dat je enkel cash kan betalen. Om positief af te sluiten: de Sangria was top! Jaren geleden nog zo een lekkere Home Made gedronken.

We wanted to see for ourselves, especially because of the many bad reviews we read. In short, it came true... Our schnitzel was frozen and was fried for too long. The mustard sauce was inedible, apparently just pure mustard mixed with cream or something.. The salmon was the best, probably because it was accidentally thrown out of the tub by the cook just in time :) There is no semi-dry wine and the only side dish is fries... Difficult...
