Restaurant Ratskeller in Bernkastel-Kues

Since my bad review was removed at the owner's request, I would like to reiterate that I was served a really bad burger here and that the service, while nice, was still poor.

We come here every year and are always thrilled. Everything is simply perfect.

Expensive place. Better to go to the pizzeria across the street!

The food was okay. The bread for the starter was quite black. We had to tell the waiter several times things like that we wanted the bill, but they didn't respond to our first request.

Pleasant ambiance, good food, and extremely friendly, competent service. We'd be happy to come back.2

A very disappointing visit – no service, no friendliness. We actually wanted to have a leisurely meal here, but we didn't even get that far. Even when we sat down, we had to wait a very long time before anyone even came – even though there were hardly any customers there and no sign of stress. There was no greeting like "Hello" or a simple smile. Instead, we were completely ignored. It was also clear that other guests outside had to wait forever for their bills. When the waiter finally arrived after a long wait, another 5-10 minutes passed before anything happened. That was simply too much for us – we left without ordering. We also found it particularly irritating that they charge €8.50 for each broken glass. Such policies seem completely excessive. If you value a "classy" appearance, you should be able to expect a minimum level of politeness, attentiveness, and customer service, especially when it comes to service. Overall, our visit was very disappointing – we would have expected much more from a restaurant with such standards. Unfortunately, we do not recommend it.

We went there at 4:30 p.m. to get something to eat. We were told the kitchen didn't open until 5 p.m., so we came back shortly after 5 p.m. We said, "Here we are again," and the waiter replied, "I can see you." We didn't find that particularly inviting. A "Great, please have a seat" would have been more appropriate. But we were hungry, so we sat down. The drinks came relatively quickly. When we came to eat, the waitress didn't thank us at the end, just a "Good." They really need to improve this area. The food itself was good. A little salty, but other than that. We would only recommend it with reservations.

Not tasty and expensive. They don't care about the quality as they are right in Rathouse, and tourists traffic is very high. Not recommend.

We ate here on Tuesday, August 5th. We had made a reservation through the app. Upon entering, we were shown a table—no one asked if we had a reservation. Our menus were simply placed on the table. The service was fast and efficient, but far from friendly. The bruschetta was tasty but tasted more like a pizza roll. Both main courses were correct—without a doubt.

We had reserved a table here and were shown to a sunny window seat. We like the sun, but not for eating in it. When we asked for a table in a more shady spot, we were snapped at by the fact that there were no other seats available, even though the restaurant was practically empty. Then I ordered a draft beer, which was lukewarm and undrinkable. Then came the food: I ordered a Viennese schnitzel with pepper sauce, and my wife ordered spare ribs. The breadcrumbs on my Viennese schnitzel were falling off, and the salad was apparently "inedible" due to vinegar. My wife's spare ribs were also unappetizing, bone-dry and burnt, as if they had been reheated. New customers who tried to enter the restaurant for a drink around 8:10 PM (closing time 9 PM) were politely turned away, even though there were still people inside who had yet to receive their food. It was unbelievable what we experienced here. It was the first, but also the last, time for us.

After a telephone call and having confirmation of the table, at the arrival the inn was fully booked and not accepted at the table. We had to leave.

Unfortunately, no special requests for food are possible, a scoop of ice cream with a waffle is not possible with the porridge game. Then the rump steak was spoiled. The answer was that it would have been herb butter, so we simply ordered something else. I could list at least ten more things, but let's get to the essentials. All in all, the place is really nice, but any other restaurant in the place would probably be worlds better.

A very beautiful place with modern decor in a historic setting; everything was very clean and well-maintained. The menu is rather small, but focuses on the essentials, and it succeeds very well: the dishes were excellently prepared and beautifully presented. You can tell that quality is a priority here. The service, however, was rather taciturn and cold. There were four of us, but we only received three menus. While the fourth of us was trying to make his choice, the waiter was already waiting for his order. The rest of the meal passed in a very pleasant and peaceful atmosphere. However, we didn't see the waiter again after the main course plates had been cleared. After waiting for 30 minutes, we finally left without dessert or coffee. The tranquility of the place is probably also due to the fact that the waiter isn't in the room.

The four of us had a wonderful evening. The service was friendly. The food was delicious. Unfortunately, no one knew anything about the wines, even when we asked if there really wasn't any staff available to serve them. This somewhat dampened the overall impression. Nevertheless, it was a lovely evening.

The quality of the food was good, but the service, unfortunately, was not. The son, unfortunately, has no knowledge of wine and couldn't answer any questions about it... Unfortunately, the value for money here isn't good.

We were just sitting outside at the Ratskeller and saw a woman bump into a table. A glass and what looked like a lamp fell off. The table hadn't been set up properly. The Ratskeller's waiter literally yelled at the woman. She could have been more careful and at least picked up the broken glass. When I intervened and asked what was going on, he attacked me and told me to stay out of it. I've never experienced anything like this in any restaurant. Sure, it's hot, but where is the service involved here?

The bruschetta isn't really bruschetta, or rather, a very poor interpretation of one. The salad was mediocre at best. The schnitzel had an atypical flavor, so it's a matter of taste. The fries were sometimes salty, sometimes unsalted. After the food was served, the waitress preferred to smoke a cigarette outside the door rather than ask if anything else was needed. All in all, not recommended.

I think the restaurant is very nicely decorated. The food was just so-so. The pepper sauce tasted like thyme sauce, the salad had too much acidity from the vinegar for me, and the schnitzel was almost overcooked in a deep fryer. The fries were very tasty. So, it wasn't really good for the price. Yes, you're paying for the location here, but they could still do better. Oh, and I couldn't tip with my debit card because of the bill and the tax... I've never heard of that before...

We went to this restaurant to ask for a table only to be told in a very rude manner that there were no tables available. Restaurant was nearly empty. I checked availability online with OpenTable (see screenshot below) and there were plenty of slots. Unbelievable rudeness.

The restaurant's located in the former Rathaus (mayor's office) in the centre, just in front of the St. Michael's fountain. Its a well renovated, well lit, tastefully decorated cellar (at ground level). We were a group of 5 people and 2 dogs, we had no booking, but the staff members did everything possible to make us feel comfortable. The wines're excellent. Traditional steaks, soups, schnitzels're all well prepared and presented. The staff're really attentive and polite. I look forward to returning.

What outstanding cuisine in this restaurant. We opted for the set menu, and the €95.00 per person was worth every single cent. Several compliments from the kitchen, subtle and sophisticated creations, very friendly and competent service, a pleasant atmosphere, and last but not least, a diverse wine list with a strong focus on the Moselle region and excellent representatives of the region. I sincerely hope this restaurant will be successful, because such a high standard is worth its weight in gold for the Moselle region! There are, of course, individual dishes, but the menu is definitely worth exploring.

It's rude to be turned away at 1:30 p.m., despite the door being open, because it's lunchtime. You could phrase it politely. Apparently, the customer isn't important here. And perhaps the opening hours should be clearly stated.

We spent a week in Bernkastel-Kues for a little vacation and we liked it so much on our first visit to the Ratskeller that we ate there a second time on our last evening. The service is friendly and on point, the food is absolutely delicious and the ambience with the mix of the old vault and modern furnishings is really nice. If we go to the Moselle again, we will definitely come back! :)

As beautiful as the town is, visiting this restaurant was just as daunting. Not only that every second dish was massively oversalted, the wheat was warm, and the aperitif was only OK for the hard-boiled, the restaurant is characterized by its lack of responsiveness to customers. So there is ice cream with the apple strudel - but obviously you can't provide it with the waffle... I could tell you more - but in a nutshell. Any other restaurant in this place will be better.

We felt very comfortable in the special, stylish ambience with tasteful furnishings and, even as vegetarians, we were able to enjoy very lovingly prepared and, above all, delicious food! The service was very friendly and gave us very good advice on choosing the food. We'd love to come back!

We had a wonderful evening with good wine and delicious food. As a former restaurateur myself, I take my hat off to what the young man in service did ALONE on a Friday evening! Great, individual service, humorous despite the full house. It's nice that it still exists, please keep it that way 👍🏻🍀

The restaurant wasn't necessarily stylishly decorated and the taciturn staff needed to warm up, but the food was really tasty and beautifully presented. We were able to have a good chat at the end and so the overall impression gave us a good grade. You can definitely eat good steak and juicy burgers here👍

We had dinner in the Ratskeller as part of a company workshop - and all 22 team members were full, happy and satisfied afterwards. The service was friendly and attentive, the food was delicious and visually appealing, the prices were reasonable, and the atmosphere in the vault was cozy. We can recommend the Ratskeller without reservation!

Since the waiter was so unfriendly and rude, we didn't get to sit down or eat anything. We won't go there again. Other passers-by were also very bothered by his tone towards you and his unfriendly manner, so they got up and left.

Extremely unfriendly! We wanted to end our Mosel wine trip today with lunch in the Ratskeller, but unfortunately that didn't happen. When I entered I asked the waiter what dishes the kitchen offered, his answer was in a very annoyed tone, it's outside the door. After we pushed the Christmas decorations aside, the menu was visible. However, the temperature of minus 1.5 degrees did not encourage us to read the menu in front of the door more closely in the cold. Despite the unfriendly greeting, we went into the completely empty restaurant and took a seat. Then you reluctantly placed the menu on the table without comment and simply left. We then sat for 12 minutes in the still empty restaurant and wanted to order, but unfortunately without success because the waiter had disappeared. We then left the restaurant. It's a shame, the tenants before COVID were world class!

Great ambience in quiet Bernkastel Kues in January. The food was unfortunately not very ambitious, the taste of the bruschetta was not definable, the burger was ok - the fries were unfortunately cold - the rump steak was ok. Everything is no more than average and price-performance doesn't match. It's a shame because the location and space itself is really premium.

Never eaten so badly! The schnitzel was as thick as paper, breading 5 times as thick, salad dressing was simply forgotten for 2 people. The service was unfriendly and unhelpful, no questions were asked about new drinks or desserts. We sat in the basement, the atmosphere was zero, it had been reserved in advance for a larger group and nothing had been prepared.

Unmotivated and a poor price/performance principle We ate in the Ratskeller on October 27th, 24 based on a recommendation. The waiter was very unfriendly, unmotivated and simply ignorant. The steak died for the second time that evening. Without asking, it was more than cooked through and when I asked about it, I got a stroppy answer. There were initially no sauces for the children's fries. The bottle of wine we ordered was carelessly placed on the table and we were allowed to do the rest ourselves. Some questions or requests were not responded to. Conclusion: no recommendation with such poor service, the ambience is nice, but the room is very noisy

Ambience of one of the better ones in Bernkastel (the bar is not very high!). Service tried hard, friendly but also a bit disorganized. Home-style food, but little. Unfortunately instead of mineral water the Purezza-Nepp. A bottle of filtered tap water for €6.90 is simply a disgrace!

Food average. Nicely prepared. Waiter was friendly but inattentive and slow. Ambience modern, but atmosphere cool. Inappropriate choice of music (exactly my taste in music, but didn't fit the would-be style of the restaurant), music at least at a pleasantly low volume.

Very pleasant, bright atmosphere! Full marks! We ate in the Ratskeller twice during our short vacation. We were well advised both when choosing the wine and the food. The Gräves mission was a complete success.

Food was standard but ok. The price was extremely overpriced. But the worst thing is the service waited an hour. No attention was paid to whether the guest still had drinks. We were greeted with the words "they have reserved" and the service immediately became loud when there was slight criticism. People, you live from tourism and are so unfriendly, the management should pay attention to that. We will definitely never eating there again

Unfortunately, the food and service cannot keep up with the ambience and fuss. Waited 1 hour for food. Quality is rather average for the prices. Everyone else was served before us. Service was completely overwhelmed by just one person and the young man couldn't handle criticism given in a normal tone. It's a shame about the money and the time.

Unfortunately, the selection of food is comparatively small. The taste of the food was also below average. The young man was the only waiter who was completely overwhelmed, so he brought the espresso without sugar and when it came after 5 minutes, the spoon with which you could stir the cold espresso after another few minutes was still missing.

Rustic food, a little bit on the plate for the price. Unfortunately the atmosphere is a bit like a waiting room, which could be counteracted better with light and music. Service was a bit stressful at times, but still friendly. Of course, great location in the old town.

Ate here for the first time in 2023. Zander with Gräves, my husband steak. Everything was very tasty. Good selection of wine. Today we were here again. Big disappointment across the board. Overwhelmed service staff (only 1 service for the well-filled restaurant.) After 45 minutes the food finally came. Town hall pan. Not recommended! The beef was too bloody and sometimes tough. The fried potatoes were completely over-seasoned with rosemary. We had different expectations for the price. After asking for the bill, it took almost half an hour until the service person finally came. Overwhelmed, almost unfriendly. No question as to whether it was tasty has. It was a big disappointment for us. We won't be coming back and can't recommend the restaurant.

Had a great burger. Atmospheric restaurant and very friendly service. Super clean toilets. The best burger ever! You could tell that a lot of attention is paid to the preparation of the dishes. Also very nicely presented on a wooden cutting board with a slate surface. The view is also very nice. The restaurant is decorated with taste.

When we ate it, the bread for the soup was dried out and the contents of the soup were chopped so that it was not clear whether there were any fresh chanterelles in it; like if I ordered a steak and got a meatball. The main course was mediocre. All in all: I wouldn't go there a second time. Unfortunately, the gastronomic quality does not match the pleasant, beautifully renovated ambience. Ulrich

Nice lunch in the Ratskeller Bernkastel-Kues! 🌟 Four of us were here for lunch today and had a pleasant time in a well-kept atmosphere. The mix of old and modern after the renovation is really successful - a place to feel good! 🕰️✨ The food was very tasty, but we agreed that it was a bit dry - this applies to the trout, the beer steak and the Jägerschnitzel. We passed on our constructive criticism directly and were assured that this would be passed on to the kitchen. 👨‍🍳👍 Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our lunch and can recommend the Ratskeller. This is a beautiful restaurant located in the heart of the town in Bernkastel. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was very peaceful and comforting. The schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce is the best schnitzel i’ve ever had. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for some German classics!

After we walked around the old town without making a reservation, looking for an attractive restaurant, there was still a table available for us. The wine list is generous and there is also a wine of the month. The pork beer steak with French fries and salad is highly recommended. When we were there it was herring week and the three kinds of herring with fried potatoes and salad that my wife ordered were also great. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The ambience is modern, framed by the old visible masonry and the beautiful columns in the middle of the room. All in all: top location

Op zoek naar een lunchadres zagen we dit historische pand. De vriendelijke jongelui die ons snel en attent de bestelde drankjes en lunch brachten deden hun werk prima. En…de kwaliteit van de lunch was prima ! Prijs/kwaliteit in orde ! Een aanrader dus !

The food was very good, but too expensive for the standard dishes. Nicely prepared. There is pepper sauce with almost everything, but it is very good. Now to the service: in a full house, only having 2 staff is not enough to take the order, serve it, clear it, bill it and also pour the drinks. They still managed to do it within their means, which is why I don't want to downgrade them.

Visit with 6 people and 2 children, only ordered waffles and drinks. The drinks were there in 5 minutes (coffee), which was followed by an hour-long wait. When we asked where our food was, we were asked in disbelief, "Food!?" And the lady made her way into the kitchen to ask questions. After we asked for the bill we apologized with "Waffles are ready now, sorry we only have one iron". Then we were served dark waffles the size of a small Belgian waffle. PS: We were the first customers, the room filled up and EVERYONE was served first. Absolutely UNDERGROUND!

Actually the worst burger (BBQ Beef & Pork) I have ever eaten. Very little salt on the fries, no salt on the table. No sauces for fries, had to be ordered additionally, then arrived after 15 minutes… Service was very friendly, but still bad. You had to wait a long time for service. Then it also took a very long time until drinks were at the table...unfortunately not completely. The glasses remained empty for a very long time. Very nice atmosphere. Not a single high chair in the restaurant :-(. Prices unreasonably high. Despite a reservation, the table was not immediately available.

Die geschmackvolle Einrichtung stammt vom vorherigen betreiber. Dessen Essen passt zur Einrichtung. Nun bekommt man Convinience Produkte. Die Aushänge versprechen aber frische und regionasle Produkte, die scheinen aber nicht den Weg bis zum Gast zu finden. Das Personal ist freundlich, aber völlig überfordert. Wenn man Wein anbietet, sollte man auch wissen, was man verkauft. ...und das im Weinort Bernkastel-Kues. Wer keine hohen Ansprüche an sein Essen hat und sich an einem schönen Ambiente erfreuen möchte, ist hier richtig. Für alle anderen gibt es bessere Restaurants in Benrkastel-Kues.

A perfect restaurant. A quality that is rarely found in the catering industry.

Absolute recommendation: The food is a dream, the atmosphere is great and the service is very nice. The bruschetta is crispy and fantastically garlicky. The olive tapenade was nice and spicy and the sourdough bread served with it was incredibly tasty. We thought we were already in food heaven - but then the burgers we ordered arrived. We shared the BBQ and chicken burger and couldn't decide which was better. The flavors of both burgers are so well balanced, everything is juicy, fresh and clearly homemade. We didn't expect such a taste explosion and we agreed: the best burgers we've eaten so far. If we didn't live so far away, we would have found our local pub. Please keep it up, it was incredibly good!

We ordered food for our daughter's christening party through the Ratskeller's catering service. Both the canapés (bruscetta, puff pastry, shrimp in batter, wontons, spring rolls) and the lunch (chicken in mushroom-grape cream & veggie-filled zucchini with rice) were very well received by us and our guests. The preliminary meeting with the boss was super friendly and uncomplicated.

The food was always really tasty when I was there, whether it was burgers or asparagus. I really like the atmosphere and we'll be back.

The Ratskeller is located in the center of Bernkastel. There are good home-style and seasonal dishes. The quality of the dishes made with fresh ingredients is good, although not outstanding. The service is friendly, the ambience is average.

We had a spontaneous meal there on a Whitsun Sunday evening. Since we had a short vacation in Bernkastel-Kues and were traveling “without” a plan during the day, we didn’t make a reservation in the evening. On this, as on the other evenings, the restaurant was very busy, but the appearance simply appealed to us, so we asked for a table for four. By chance something became free after a few minutes. The restaurant manager welcomed us very friendly and accompanied us to the table. The ambience is very appealing and beautiful. Renovated, modernly furnished, but so that you can still recognize the “old” of a Ratskeller. All in all, the furnishings are of very high quality, which I and my husband especially noticed (table lamps from Villeroy and Boch, modern tableware from V&B, high-quality glasses from Zwiesel, etc.). Unfortunately, our “favorite wine” was already out, but the boss recommended an alternative that was really good. The food was very tasty. Attractive size, beautifully presented, especially with a clear menu, which in my opinion is a sign of quality. At the end we had a chat with the boss, which rounded off the evening perfectly and beautifully. We would go again!

Very nice restaurant, modernized in a historic building. Unfortunately the service is cold and impersonal. The food was good, but couldn't stand up to the location and ambience. The bottom line is that I can't recommend it considering the large selection of restaurants in Bernkastel-Kues!

Once and never again…. The food was a disaster. The "BBQ Burger" as they call it was very bad. The alleged meat patty had nothing to do with meat. To me it looked more like a vegan mushy paste that was shaped into a patty. And the staff was nice but unfortunately didn't speak German. Not for the money they asked for. So sorry, never again…!!!!

Went there for dinner today. Overall okay. The prices are too expensive compared to the portions. The burger wasn't minced meat, it resembled a veggie patty that was just steam cooked, it didn't taste like meat.

The food is good. I had asparagus soup and the salmon with raisin risotto as my main course. The taste is really good, the portion could be a little bigger for the price. The interior design is very successful! Unfortunately the service left a lot to be desired. It was noticeable that there are no trained service staff at work here.

Online Reservierung hat geklappt, aber kurz nach Eintritt ins Lokal war der Grundstein eines unvergesslichen Abend gelegt. Die Getränkebestellung war schon schwierig...der erste Wein war aus...der 2. Wird nicht in Flaschen serviert...(Warum eigentlich nicht?-kommt der aus dem Tetra). Die geforderten Spirituosen kammen erst auf erneute Nachfrage und waren nur teilweise verfügbar...die Liste der Mängel ist unendlich...falsche Nudeln, schlechter Burger, mind. 2 weitere Gerichte waren "aus"...,leider wurden auch keine Alternativen angeboten. Das unfreundliche und überforderte Personal kann hier auch nur bestätigt werden. Zum Schluss stand noch Ketchup auf der Rechnung den wir nie bekommen haben.Er war eigentlich nötig und die versalzen Pommes essbar zu machen. Hier ...nie wieder

Essen wirklich gut, große Auswahl sehr guter Weine und eine total nette Bedenung. Jederzeit zu empfehlen! Und die Lage im schönen Bernkastel natürlich!
