Good Bavarian food, friendly staff

The food was honest and decent, but the wait for the ordered dishes was too long. The service wasn't unfriendly, but somewhat negligent. There was a draft coming through the main entrance door every time it was opened.

Highly recommended. We were here on New Year's Eve when they offered a three-course set menu. The food arrived quickly and was delicious (chestnut soup, duck breast, and a delicate tiramisu). What makes this place special is the family that owns it. For one thing, the owners still pitch in themselves. This down-to-earth attitude is reflected in the service: incredibly personal and attentive, even with slightly challenging guests, like toddlers and their parents (like us) can sometimes be. We'll definitely be back to see if it's even nicer in the summer with the terrace.

The potato salad with cucumbers, made according to Grandma's recipe, was a ready-made product and tasted disgusting.

The drinks and food were ridiculously expensive compared to the rest of the old town. €12 for a small cocktail, oh well...

Okay, but nothing special. Service was neutral; used dishes were sometimes left on the tables for a very long time before being cleared. The Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) were rather bland. The trio of dumplings was good, but also nothing special. The gingerbread dessert was tasty, but very small and consisted mainly of cream. Of the three dessert options, only one was available. Drink prices were rather high.

This is an authentic German restaurant with excellent service and delicious food. It's conveniently located in the city center. If you have the chance, you should definitely visit!

Ok but not very genuine and quite expensive, smaller portions and did t have some of the advertised food items. Location is very central but be prepared to climb up some stairs

The schnitzel was very small and bland. The same was true for the cordon bleu we ordered. Some side dishes are charged separately.

Very inviting, tastefully decorated, located right on the main market square – a prime location. The food is good and tasty, but all drinks are completely overpriced; the coffee is barely drinkable. Overall, the drink prices are far too high, and while the food is also expensive, it's just about acceptable considering the location. Good parking is available in one of the parking garages. The drink prices prevent it from getting more than three stars.

We wanted to end our last day of vacation in Nuremberg with a typical Franconian lunch. We weren't disappointed at the Oberkrainer restaurant. The hearty dishes were delicious, and the service was very friendly. If we're ever in Nuremberg again, we'll definitely come back!

IMHO - the worst food ever in Europe. I had to return the plate back to the kitchen.

Beware, tourist trap! We unfortunately fell for it because of the many enthusiastic 5-star reviews, which now seem unbelievable to us. The food was a disappointment. We had to send back the Wiener Schnitzel, which cost almost €30; it was overcooked in what seemed like old oil and was a very dark brown color. The trio of dumplings and the roast pork were mediocre. The Schäufele (pork shoulder) was on the menu, but it was no longer available at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The beer was very good (Spalter Helles), but at €5.90 for 0.4 liters, it was completely overpriced. Overall, everything felt very uninspired. We expected something different from a traditional Franconian restaurant.

We went for lunch on Christmas Day and experienced traditional Nuremberg cuisine. The food was quite delicious and well-balanced. Although the restaurant was very crowded and we had to wait for the staff to take our order, the food came out quite quickly afterward. The seating was nice and cozy.

You have to climb a steep flight of stairs to get to the dining room. Then you're greeted by the delicious aroma of food, and you immediately get even hungrier – if that's possible! The staff are very friendly and attentive, even though they have to work at a pretty fast pace. The food is hearty and truly delicious, and the portions are generous. The prices are on the higher end, but what can you expect when the restaurant is located on the main market square? We'll definitely be back.

On Sunday at 7:30 p.m., the schnitzel was sold out. That's understandable. But the fact that the fries were also sold out at the same time shouldn't happen in a restaurant with 70 years of experience. I had the original Wiener Schnitzel. It came with a potato salad that tasted very much like it had been bought from a store. I paid €160 for five people. Considering that most of the food probably came from a wholesale market, that was quite disappointing. The older waiter was very unfriendly and didn't make the guests feel valued. The food wasn't bad overall. However, for a restaurant in this location with this tradition, it was merely adequate.

There was no more pork shoulder and fries available at 7:30 pm! The potato salad was supposedly made according to Grandma's recipe – Grandma probably buys it at the wholesale market! They also had pre-made dumplings! The service was unfriendly, except for two younger men. For five people, including one drink each, the bill came to €159! Anyone expecting Bavarian cuisine will be disappointed – what a shame. We can't understand the good reviews.

Staff take pride in the restaurant being family-owned and run. Bottom line, the establishment needs better customer service training of its staff if it is going to serve tourists of all nations who come across its steps. Normally, I love a good generationally run family restaurant, however, our experience today was less than enjoyable. We ordered two appetizers, only one arrived. The table in front of us (who sat down at least 10-20 minutes after us) received all of their food, beverages, and check before we were notified (only because we hunted down a waiter to ask him) that the kitchen was having “maintenance issues”. We had already been sat for an hour and a half waiting for the rest of our food — our only round of beers already empty. After asking a second time, after numerous attempts to get the attention of our waiter, we were met with an extremely rude response to a simple question: “what’s going on with our food?” The waiter simply said “I don’t know while walking away, giving us only his back in response to our question. Shortly after, our food was served but we were still missing our second appetizer and we were not offered anything else, like WATER. This caused my nearly 60 year old father to boil in anger. I personally then went out of my way to look for a server to ask for the check, as we had already wasted 2 hours of our time in the city, given that we still had a schedule to meet ahead of us. Our intent in the city was also made clear to the staff in hope for a speedier service. What I assume is the manager, was polite in trying to repair/address the issue. He spoke both English and Spanish. Regardless, I believe 125€ for 3 schnitzels and 4 beers (≈5€ per beer) is kind of insane. If you want to grab a bite to eat here, my recommendation would be to be conscious of how much of your time sightseeing you want to spend sitting as a lunch table. Anyway, there’s more to say but I hope this gets the point across. Very unfortunate considering Old Town Nuremberg is such a beautiful place to enjoy at the fullest.

Authentic German food in the city center with amazing service from all the guys

More than 1 hour waiting for the food. Nobody pays attention to you; you have to keep calling the waiter. After an hour, the order didn’t arrive correctly: food was missing, and so were the utensils. In short, if you want to waste the day, come eat at this place.

I find the prices completely outrageous: Weissbier 6.90, Spezi 5.90. I had a Fädlesuppe (a type of pasta soup) 8.90, which was really just a couple of pasta strands in a ready-made broth.

My husband and I had Christmas menu dinner, restaurant with traditional local food, service great, the staff all very young, very nice and professional people, the food was great, everything well-prepared, especially my duck.

If you don't speak German, it's better to choose another place to visit. The only time I felt like an unwanted guest in Germany. The waiters don't speak any other languages ​​than German, so they thought it would be appropriate to just walk past. There were two of us. We ordered soup, schnitzel, and pork in beer sauce. Unfortunately, the waiter didn't understand the word schnitzel either, so he didn't add it to the order. When the misunderstanding became obvious, the waiter apologized, brought another pork in beer sauce, and we ordered another juice and a glass of beer for his colleague. Guess what? That's right, the drinks weren't brought out. But they didn't forget to add it to the bill. When I went up to another waiter with a translator on his phone and explained that they hadn't brought out our drinks, he didn't understand what the problem was. He started to lecture me about my lack of language skills. Unfortunately. If you don't speak German - I don't recommend it. In the center of the old town there are other restaurants serving both classic German and European cuisine.

A quaint pub with a brewery feel. Usually very busy. The Nuremberg bratwurst is good; I've been there twice and always end up coming back for the bratwurst. The staff is attentive and quick. There's nothing negative to report, except that the prices are rather high, but that's not surprising given the location and its popularity. So, all in all, very good.

Mediocre service. We had the Christmas menu with duck, dumplings, and red cabbage. The dumplings were mushy (from a packet). The duck skin wasn't crispy, but the meat was okay. The red cabbage was too sour and bland. It lacked the characteristic Boskoop apple and the seasoning. The menu was poorly prepared. The dessert was too heavy on the cream. The roux was still noticeable in the soup, and the croutons were too salty. Conclusion: Too expensive for such mediocre quality. Not recommended. The lighting is too bright.

A disastrous experience on December 24, 2025! The set lunch menu, €69 per person, was an absolute flop, not to mention a complete catastrophe! The starter, a chestnut cream soup, was bland, but still somewhat acceptable. The main courses were a disaster. The choices were Wiener Schnitzel with Franconian potato salad and duck breast with red cabbage and dumplings. Both were unacceptable. The schnitzels were frozen, about 150g per person, and overcooked! They weren't even fried in clarified butter or breaded. The worst schnitzel I've ever eaten. A gas station schnitzel sandwich is better. The potato salad was also from Metro. A solid 6 for the meal. The duck breast was an assault on my health. The meat was old and had a rancid taste. Terribly roasted, the skin wasn't crispy, but leathery and tough. It had clearly been stored in the refrigerator for at least one or two days after roasting. The dumplings and the red cabbage were store-bought, not homemade. I left the duck after two bites. The crowning glory was the Franconian gingerbread tiramisu, which tasted like duck fat. The dessert was probably stored in the same refrigerator as the duck breast. Inedible! The first complaint went unanswered, but the server didn't seem surprised; it appeared they'd heard this before. After the second complaint and a request for the owner to come to the table, the only response was, "The boss isn't here, and the chef isn't coming out." Unbelievable. The Oberkrainer, once known for good food, deserves a failing grade for this performance! If you go to the Röslein, you'll get a schnitzel that actually lives up to its name. So stay away from this tourist trap and find other restaurants in Nuremberg! I could have donated those €600 instead of spending them here...

A beautiful family run place located in the heart of the old city. Very accommodating and friendly!!! Food was wonderful!!! Open on Christmas Eve!!! Grandma opened this lovely place and many family members still work here. Please give this place a try, you will be glad you did!!!🤓🤓🤓

We went there for the Christmas lunch special on December 24th. Some might say that alone was a mistake. Since we weren't expecting gourmet cuisine anyway, our expectations weren't particularly high. But the fact that a restaurant in Nuremberg's city center could botch even a simple Wiener Schnitzel or a duck breast so badly was beyond my comprehension. The breading on the schnitzel was almost burnt (see photos), not at all fluffy, and the meat was tough and chewy. The duck was absolutely inedible. I tried both portions and couldn't finish them. And I'm not a chronic complainer; I'm simply describing a completely unacceptable restaurant experience without any filter. When confronted, the staff responded, "The boss isn't here today." When I asked, "Not the chef either?" – "He doesn't have time."

Had a great meal at Oberkrainer on Christmas Eve! The chestnut soup and schnitzel was delicious, and the staff were super nice. There is a great view over the Christmas market from the restaurant as well. Recommended for anyone looking for a great meal near the market square.

This place was a perfect Christmas Eve lunch. Family-owned since 1970, it delivers exactly what you hope for: superb food and service that actually keeps pace. I had the veal schnitzel—crispy, tender, and absolutely dialed in—made even better with their house sauce, which adds just the right richness without overpowering the dish. Great market views seal the deal. A must-try if you’re anywhere nearby. 5 Stars all around.

We have dinner on 23rd of December with all our and family from Spain and really enjoy the place. The food was simply delicious and the service was great. It is located right in front of the Christmas market of Nuremberg so easy to get in and enjoy a meal after walking around the market.

Ordered the schnitzel and cordon Bleu and both were delicious! Fries are cut spectacularly and I've never had better! True German food.

The best thing first: the location on the main market square. Based on the good reviews, we made a reservation for 4 adults and 2 children on December 21, 2025, at 5:15 p.m. and were looking forward to the traditional Schäufele (roast pork shoulder). After about 20 minutes, the waitress finally came to our table and said, "We're out of Schäufele and roast pork. The oven is broken." So, we reluctantly ordered something else. They did have duck (from the oven?), which we ordered. The price was high, and the portion was small. A refill of sauce costs extra. Bread is extra, and €11 for a 0.2-liter glass of wine is quite steep. (See receipt.) The price-performance ratio is not right. In our opinion, the restaurant is not upscale in terms of service and quality. All in all, we cannot recommend this restaurant. In our view, it does not reflect well on Nuremberg.

The food was generally okay, but the portions seemed rather small considering the price. Furthermore, due to an apparently broken oven, the full range of dishes we had been looking forward to couldn't be offered. Our expectations were exceptionally high after visiting another restaurant the day before, which may have influenced our assessment. Overall, however, our impression didn't match the high standard conveyed in previous reviews. It wasn't bad by any means, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough for us to recommend it.

My wife and I had lunch here during the Christmas market. It's a historic, family-run restaurant. We enjoyed schnitzel, spinach dumpling soup with French fries, and Nuremberg's famous red beer. We sat by the window, which was a great seat with a panoramic view of the city! All the food was delicious, and the red beer was also excellent. The staff were all very friendly and we had a very pleasant stay. I highly recommend it! Danke schön!

We stumbled upon this restaurant while visiting the Christmas market. The service was incredibly friendly despite the large number of guests. It was a constant flow of people, but we hardly noticed. The food was very good and served relatively quickly. We had frittata soup (which could have been a bit spicier/stronger), roast sausages, and cordon bleu. All in all, excellent value for money at this popular spot.

You have to give the Franconians credit for this: no matter how touristy the location, it doesn't detract from the quality. The food was very good and arrived very quickly. Despite its proximity to the Christmas market, it's highly recommended.

Conveniently located right across the Christmas market. Very cozy and pleasant atmosphere. Servers were efficient. However the food wasn't particularly good, the schweinebraten lacked flavor and wasn't the most tender, the potato dumpling didn't have much flavor and was bit too doughy. The schnitzel weiner art on the other hand was very crispy and paired well with the potato salad. All in all, it was conveniently located with availability even during dinner hours, but the food is hit or miss.

A very nice restaurant, looks very promising, but unfortunately the food looks better than it tastes. For the price, one expects more. The schnitzel was more breading than meat and too small for what it was, and the mushroom sauce was very watery and not very tasty. Unfortunately, the food arrived at very different times, so I wouldn't recommend it for dining in the old town. A shame.

It was our first meal in Nuremberg and it was a good experience. The service was friendly, but the timing of the food was inconsistent. The starters came out quickly, but the entrees and dessert came out progressively slower. The atmosphere felt bright and comfortable. There was an odd energy about the place. Some patrons seemed very happy while others seemed dissatisfied and skipped out on the check. The food was mediocre to good. The veal schnitzel felt like the tenderness had been beaten out of it, while the accompanying potato salad was delicious. The apple strudel was very good. All in all, a good, not great meal.

Unfortunately, completely overrated. Apart from the great view and the interior ambiance, this isn't my first choice for next time. A restaurant that offers a genuine Wiener Schnitzel, which arrives after about 10 minutes very small, dark, with a hard breading (not airy and bubbly as it should be) and tasting of deep-frying oil, is, in my opinion, no better than a large cafeteria! I can understand that they have to prepare in advance during such a tourist rush (Christmas market). But for a legend like a Wiener Schnitzel to suffer because they briefly throw a pre-fried schnitzel back into the fryer... sorry, that's just unacceptable. My wife's Schäufele (pork shoulder) was okay. Nothing more than that.
