Nice ambience, nice service and good food

An excellent restaurant near Kiel, with a focus on regional cuisine. Located on the Kiel Canal, you can look at ships passing by while you enjoy the delicious food served in generous portions. The service is very attentive and friendly. Attention: people use the same names as each other! The prices are reasonable and consistently cheaper than in my home region. I ate crab soup and fried cod, both of which were just great! Unfortunately there was no room in my stomach for dessert.

Very tasty food, fine wine selection. The location on the canal is particularly beautiful, but the ambience is also right. In addition, a very good price-performance ratio. We'll definitely come back.

A great place and a great location. It's nice that it was so beautifully prepared. However, the cake wouldn't make me come back and the older gentleman in service could be a bit friendlier. But I would like to come back again because of the view and try something hearty. Everyone has a bad day sometimes ;).

We celebrated our 80th birthdays in Margaretental with 50 guests. The celebration started with breakfast and ended with waffles, red jelly and coffee in the late afternoon. The food was delicious, the service was excellent. We and our guests were very satisfied and would like to say thank you to the team!!

The location on the canal is fantastic. The service was completely overwhelmed, after bringing the food and drinks no one came. We had to wait a long time until the waitress finally came after loud calls to take our further drink requests.

You should also write everywhere that there is no hot food at 3 p.m.! The staff immediately told us that we weren't allowed to sit on the covered terrace because they didn't want to get sick! Then she handed us the menu and told us that there was only cake! It doesn't get any worse!

On my special day (birthday) I chose this restaurant for breakfast. After reserving a table by telephone a few days before, the three of us set off on the journey. My impression exceeded and exceeded everything.... Great table, great view, very nice food buffet... great prices, plenty of choice.... not to forget the nice waitresses and waiters who came before, the staff is very nice. Since today, this restaurant has had 2-3 more guests as regulars... warm greetings will be back soon...

A modern, cozy restaurant. Very good food with a great location right on the canal. You have a direct view of the canal, ships and the other side through the wall of windows. You can take a nice walk along the canal before or after visiting the restaurant. There is a playroom for children, can bring dogs. Can also rent space for festivities.

The service wasn't attentive enough in my opinion. For example, no bread was served in advance, which is actually a common rule in this restaurant. After we asked about it, they just said they had probably forgotten. Furthermore, no further drinks were asked.

Highly recommended! A great location with the best view of the Kiel Canal 🤩 The service employees are all very friendly and service-oriented! The entire ambience is harmonious, the furnishings appear to be newly renovated and modernized. A pure feel-good atmosphere. The menu offers a bit of everything (fish, meat, etc.) and is not overloaded. The kitchen knows what it's doing! My panfish with 3 kinds was excellent, the fried potatoes were perfect! Prices are reasonable and completely fine. A place to stay. We'll be back... and have to try the cake, unfortunately it didn't fit in my stomach anymore 😇 Thank you very much!

Wir waren mit den Rädern auf ein Getränk und ein Eis dort. Der Becher Kaffee war ok, der Cappuccino dünn und lieblos angerichtet. Die jeweils 2 Kugeln Eis waren einfachste Truhenware. Der 'Hammer' war die Sahne darauf - hat sich wie billigste Sprühsahne bereits beim Servieren aufgelöst. Beim Abräumen wurde gefragt ob alles ok war... Nein, die Sahne war nicht ok, ist das Sprühsahne ? Antwort: Das ist Gastro-Sahne aus einem Spender... Ok, wie andere schon schrieben, die Lage ist nicht alles ! Wir kommen nicht wieder !

Not again for coffee and ice cream...and anything... We went there with our bikes for a drink and an ice cream. The cup of coffee was ok, the cappuccino was thin and carelessly presented. The 2 scoops of ice cream each were the simplest product from a chest. The 'hammer' was the cream on top - like the cheapest spray cream, it dissolved when served. When clearing away we asked if everything was ok... No, the cream wasn't ok, is that spray cream? Answer: This is gastro cream from a dispenser... Ok, as others have already written, the location isn't everything! We won't be coming back!

The waffles are great. But we were there recently as part of a small birthday party and I was pretty disappointed. It wasn't busy (lots of empty seats) and even though there were only 5 orders, it took over 1 hour. I ordered a large portion of fries, the fries themselves weren't bad, but I still felt ripped off. Less than 25 fries just isn't an expensive adult portion for me. In addition, almost everyone had something missing and we had to ask. It took another 15 minutes until the ketchup came. But the conditions were very nice. Our table (outside) was so crooked that some of the glasses tipped over and everyone (especially the older ones) had back pain afterwards. Sorry, but just too expensive for these conditions!

Unique location. Decent dishes. BUT: the boss had taken our order. After waiting for the soup for over three quarters of an hour, we asked whether our food had perhaps been forgotten. Actually. The boss apologized and our soup, and the main courses also came quite quickly. However, we were given the soup and a spoon with it. No napkin, which actually belongs with it. Cutlery and napkins came with the main course. And in the end the boss also cashed in. I would have expected that, in addition to a normal apology, there would have been an offer to do something good for us: for example, a coffee for dessert. But it didn't come. From there: only three stars out of five.

Ich gehe jede Wette ein, dass unsere beiden recht selbstbewusst bepreisten (je 27,-) Kalbsschnitzel reine Fertigprodukte vom Großhändler waren, die man in eine Friteuse mit selten gewechseltem Fett geworfen hat. Die Panade war angebrannt, nicht aufgegangen und roch penetrant nach Fisch. Das Fleisch selbst war recht zäh. Sogar die Schnitzelsemmeln an der Autobahn wirken da appetitlicher. Die Aussicht ist schön und die Servicekräfte sehr freundlich. Zum (Trinkgeld) Abkassieren kommen dann aber die ingesamt desinteressiert wirkenden Betreiber. Unsere Anmerkungen zum „fischigen“ Schnitzel wurden jedenfalls komplett ignoriert.

The table outside for 6 people was only available under protest. The food came, but without cutlery, so it was cold. In addition, sometimes the food that was ordered did not arrive or was incomplete. It was only cleared away after a request from a non-responsible service person. Overall unfortunately disappointing. Have eaten better there.

**Restaurant Margaretental** Unfortunately, our visit to the Margaretental restaurant was a disappointment. What we ordered wasn't brought and the service was inattentive and poor. Our food was almost cold and we had to specially request the cutlery. We were also served the wrong food and there was no insight or goodwill from the staff. There was also no sign of any concession or effort towards the guests. Although the location on the canal is nice, this is greatly marred by the narrow-minded and difficult staff as well as the overpriced prices for small, maximally lukewarm portions. Thanks, but we definitely won't be coming back. ---

Wir waren mit 4 Personen zum Abendessen, das Lokal war normal besucht. Das Essen wurde nicht gleichzeitig, sondern in großen Abständen gebracht, Bratkartoffeln erst auf nachfragen. Zwischenzeitlich wurde andere Tische bedient. Die gefüllte Hähnchenbrust war trocken und eher geschmacklos, die Bratkartoffeln waren lauwarm und die Sauce zum Matjes ein Fertigprodukt. Für die aufgerufenen Preise nicht befriedigend.

I was happy to get to know a new restaurant. However, the mood faded as soon as I entered the restaurant. The guest room is quite dark, with dirty tables and partitions to the terrace that have a greasy film on them. The terrace itself is unkempt, not swept. There is also a service staff that calls you by the first name without asking. It had more of the charm of a bistro on a campsite. The location right on the canal alone could certainly make a great restaurant, but it's not an inviting place and it's a shame to waste money here.

Incredible location, we only wanted coffee and waffles though

An incredibly beautifully located brick building that has been tastefully converted into a beautiful country inn. So far so good. This, and the location on the canal, basically justify higher prices. Unfortunately, the quality of the food for me and my companion left a lot to be desired. Dry roast beef and tough, stringy liver don't do the ambience justice.

The breakfast is good, but far too short. You can now stay seated longer and not be asked to leave at 11:30 a.m.... What is not possible is that breakfast is prepared slowly or rather quickly at 11 a.m. And then the sentence from the kitchen... We can do that... Well, I'll pay for it... The scrambled eggs lack spices! The atmosphere is great and also the playground for the children. Has anyone thought of it! Drinks are also included in the price, which makes a big difference. It's a harmonious breakfast, everything you need is there. We like being there, if the criticisms are accepted, it would be even better.

Four of us went back for lunch. The quality of the food was good as always. The rennet portions were outrageously small and at best appetizer size. This can scare away regular guests.

We were able to spontaneously host our wedding dinner in Margaretental. A lot was made possible within a short period of time. All guests were satisfied with the food. Everything went smoothly. The location on the canal is also very nice.

Breakfast on Sunday is unfortunately not recommended as the price/performance ratio is unfortunately not right. Organization of the plates/no vegetables/no signage of the food/little selection (instead of so many egg dishes, maybe one more type of salami that everyone likes)/staff friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately, it cannot compete with other breakfast offerings where the price is similar. Scrambled eggs not seasoned well, cream cheese too much salt (both still tasted good so far).

The old excursion restaurant has been beautifully designed again, the only downside is that since it is in a residential area, celebrations cannot last longer than 10 p.m.

Canned asparagus with ready-made hollandaise. Oh well. The Wiener Schnitzel breading is not airy, the fried potatoes are not crispy. Anyone who ordered panfish from us was satisfied. Conclusion: Nice place, nicely located, but you don't need to go there because of the food.

Positive: the breakfast buffet, the coffee Negative: the baked rolls, unfortunately only three different types! Plus the rolls were rock hard!! After cutting it, the plate was full of crumbs and there wasn't much left of the roll itself. That is not how it works! I've never experienced anything so bad before! By the way, where were the egg cups? I didn't find any, it doesn't have to be! It's a shame, but a successful breakfast offering looks different to me!

The fried potatoes also had to be seasoned. Conclusion: based on all the 5 star reviews, I expected more in terms of taste.

well, there's still room for improvement, but first things first... My wife and I were there for lunch on May 18, 2024. The service came quickly and was ongoing not to complain about. The sour meat for my wife was, as expected, good and excellent. sufficient, only the salad dressing was watery. It would be Better to serve the salad separately instead of on the plate. My expectations for the veal schnitzel I ordered were high, However, it quickly caused astonishment. After all, they charge €27 for it! The schnitzel was, as you can tell from the breading could, probably heated in the deep fryer. Not a nice one Breading like you would expect from a Wiener Schnitzel. I doubt it was freshly prepared, that was more likely Snack format. There was also a cucumber salad - Amount max. 1 tablespoon - Dressing watery and tasteless, no dill Both dishes came with fried potatoes, which I can do better! There was a lot of coffee grounds in the pot of coffee, unpleasant! Whether we give a second chance is off the table for now...

I've been there three times and once I went for coffee. My conclusion is: the food is good but simple and very expensive. A main course is nothing to fill you up. I was also disappointed with the waffle with all the trimmings because the fruit wasn't warm. Here too the price-performance ratio is not OK. The location is certainly very nice there, but if you sit indoors I have to say - no atmosphere, very loud and rather uncomfortable. Yes, it's a shame that the service doesn't really do anything. Es nervt, wenn man sich nicht unterhalten kann. Wir waren mehrfach dort auch zum Kaffee trinken. Und jetzt ist das Resümee: muss man nicht mehr machen. Alles zu teuer und der Service ist auch nicht gerade gut. Sehr unfreundlich und es dauert ewig.

We were there today for waffles. The weather was great. We sat outside and could look directly at the canal. The waitress came quickly and took our order. The waffles came before the drinks. My waffle was more holes than batter. Furthermore, it was baked so darkly that the dough tasted burnt. I would have liked to have mentioned this to customer service. Something like that can happen. Unfortunately, no one came. When we finally had someone there to pay, we asked if it was tasty. That was denied. And the waitress was very surprised that no one was at our table. Unfortunately for us that's a reason not to go again.

Very nicely located, children pay full price should be reconsidered

A clear recommendation for a really good meal, magical hospitality and a first-class view of the Kiel Canal. Here everyone will find something delicious on the menu and can feel completely at home. I really like the consistent first-name approach and is explained directly on the first page of the menu.

We've been there for brunch twice now, once with 12 people and once with four people. The selection is very good and of good quality, the coffee is strong and tasty and tea is available in a wide variety of flavors. You don't have to rush to try a little of everything as there is always enough. You can have various juices, the salmon and the cold cuts and cheese are always available. The service is friendly and courteous and also brings you other drinks, such as coffee specialties and cocoa, but these have to be paid for additionally. But for the price of the brunch at €21, that's completely ok. Admittedly, the rooms are relatively full, but I'm happy for the operators. Conversely, it also means that breakfast is well received. The restaurant is family-friendly, as children only have to pay when they reach a certain age and then on a sliding scale depending on their age. There is also a large children's playground. Brunch starts at 9:30 a.m. sharp and ends at 11:30 a.m. That's what it says on the website. Afterwards you can take a nice walk along the canal. We will be back definitely.

We celebrated our daughter's confirmation in Margaretental on Sunday in the best weather and were thrilled! The service was great, we were well looked after for 4 hours. The communication before and during the celebration was also excellent. We and our guests enjoyed the selected food excellently, and the panfish in particular is highly recommended! The atmosphere inside and of course outside is always worth a visit. We can recommend the restaurant to anyone who has a party to organize: nothing to be desired is left unfulfilled here.

Ich kann die schlechten Bewertungen für den Brunch nicht nachvollziehen. Die Beschwerde bei einer vorherigen Bewertung , dass der Kaffee zu stark ist oder dass nicht die ganze Zeit genügend Essen da war oder dass die Qualität der Brötchen nicht gut ist, kann ich nicht nachvollziehen. Wir waren jetzt 2 mal zum Brunchen da, einmal mit 12 Personen und einmal zu viert. Das Angebot ist sehr gut und von guter Qualität, der Kaffee stark und geschmackvoll und Tee gibt es in verschiedensten Geschmacksvariationen. Man muss sich nicht beeilen um von allem etwas testen zu können, da es immer genügend gibt. Diverse Säfte kann man sich nehmen, den Lachs und den Aufschnitt und Käse gibt es immer wieder nach. Die Bedienung ist freundlich und zuvorkommend und bringt einem auch andere Getränke, wie z.B. Kaffeespezialitäten und Kakao, diese müssen dann allerdings zusätzlich bezahlt werden. Für den Preis des Brunches ist das aber vollkommen o.k. Zugegeben, es ist relativ voll in den Räumen, aber das freut mich für die Betreiber. Es heißt ja auch im Umkehrschluss, dass das Frühstück gut angenommen wird. Das Restaurant ist familienfreundlich, da Kinder erst ab einem bestimmten Alter etwas zahlen müssen und dann auch noch gestaffelt nach Lebensalter. Außerdem gibt es einen großen Kinderspielplatz. Das Brunchen beginnt um Punkt 9:30 Uhr und endet um 11:30 Uhr. So steht es auch auf der Website. Danach kann man dann noch schön am Kanal spazieren gehen. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder.

Today we had lunch with 4 people in Margaretental. We received a very friendly welcome and were given a wonderful window seat! The lunch menu offered a good and varied selection of different dishes. 4 people, 4 different dishes...everything very tasty and well presented! We felt comfortable in the ambience of the house, ate deliciously and were well looked after... We are happy to recommend the house and the kitchen and would be happy to come back!!

Breakfast buffet with good but limited selection. We were supposed to pay for the water for our small children, so we got it from the toilet. Two hours of time is short. Fifteen minutes before the end, the food and drinks on offer began to be cleared away.

So far I have not only eaten well there, but also had pleasant experiences. In my opinion, the employees are without exception friendly and helpful.

Tradition meets modernity... I know the restaurant from the time of the Gohlke family in the 90s. Even then, the 'ravages of time' had already gnawed at the house. The approximately 20 years of vacancy have done the rest. The architect's design catapults the building into the present without losing its original character. It's nice that this house is back and will be preserved for the people of Kiel for as long as possible.

After all the hype, I expected a lot more from the food. There are large portions, but I missed something special. So, despite the game goulash, it was more like good home cooking. The staff was friendly, although all very young. Location on the canal and the rooms are great too.

Die Lage des "Margaretenthal" ist vortrefflich; Einrichtung und Essen können leider nicht mithalten. Wir wollten das Restaurant mal antesten und fanden uns in einer großen Halle wieder, die uns atmosphärisch an Gastgewerbe in der ehemaligen DDR erinnern ließ. Das servierte Essen hatte leider Mängel, die auf unsere freundlichen Hinweise aber kulanterweise akzeptiert und bei der Rechnung berücksichtigt wurden. Das Lokal hat Potenzial, das nach unserer Einschätzung noch nicht ausgeschöpft ist.

Liebes Team Margaretental, mein Mann wollte nicht, dass ich gleich konstruktive Kritik äußere. Darum hier: die Waffel war zwar gut, auch wenn für den Preis bessere und mehr Sahne gut gewesen wäre. Aber der sehr trockene Schokoladen Kuchen war sicher eingefroren und aufgetaut nach Bedarf und die unschöne zu flüssige Sahne drüber geflatscht mit ein paar dünnen Birnenscheiben, die kaum nach Birne schmeckten. Und der Kakao war zu wässrig. In ihrer Karte steht was von Qualität. Machen Sie es besser. Ich war zum Beispiel mal in Eckernförde in einem Imbiss am Strand ( vor dem Sturm), in dem habe ich den leckersten Kakao mit der leckerstenWaffel gegessen und da gab es fairprodukte und sogar günstiger. Es ist nicht schwer, bessere Qualität anzubieten. Zum Beispiel auch Bauernhof-Cafes-Restaurants machen es vor.( Ich habe auch mal in einem Restaurant gearbeitet.) Sie haben doch bestimmt auch einen guten Geschmack. Ich würde mich an ihrer Stelle Tips holen von guten Gasthäusern, wie die das finanziell wuppen und trotzdem gute Qualität anbieten. Ich wünsche alles gute.
