Our best meal in the Moselle region. Excellent food and incredibly friendly service. Traditional and authentic atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Yesterday we went to the Christmas market in Bernkastel-Kues and later to the Restaurant Cafe Thiesen. There we had a waffle with cherries and cream, as well as a tarte flambée in the Alsatian style. It was absolutely delicious, the service was very friendly, and we will definitely come back. Highly recommended! 🙂👍

We visited Restaurant Cafe Thiesen a few years ago and had fond memories of it. And it was just as good this time. The price-performance ratio is excellent, the food is good quality, and the service is always friendly, no matter how busy it is. There is one small drawback, though: when the restaurant is full, it can get a bit noisy due to the building's layout. It didn't bother us, however. So, if you're in the area, you should definitely eat here (preferably with a reservation). We'll gladly come back again.

We were there as a married couple. The food was plentiful and perfectly reasonable in price, although extras like sauces or side salads charge a comparatively high surcharge. The quality was excellent. Unfortunately, we encountered a lot of fruit flies at our table.

We've been guests at Restaurant Thiesen several times over the years and always enjoy coming back. The food always impresses with its quality and taste; we've never been disappointed. This is precisely why we like to come back several times during a single stay 😊 The service is attentive and very friendly; here, too, nothing is left to be desired. We were able to get a table both spontaneously and with a reservation. Since the restaurant is very busy, especially on weekends, a reservation is recommended. The only minor criticism is that during our last visit, we unfortunately noticed a lot of small fruit flies, which were also buzzing around the tables and sitting on the walls. Nevertheless, we will definitely come back whenever we're in Bernkastel!

Even though we didn't have a table reservation on Friday evening, the waitress seated us (there were two of us with a dog) until the next table was available. Everyone was very friendly and, despite the "time pressure," everything was served calmly. The food was delicious.

We were a tour group from Osnabrück. We, four women, followed the recommendation of locals and went to Restaurant Thiesen. The service was exceptionally friendly and keen to fulfill all our wishes. The food was incredibly delicious and of very high quality. We enjoyed our meal with a truly excellent wine. We chose Restaurant Thiesen on the following days as well and enjoyed the evening every time, once even getting a table without a reservation. We will definitely recommend the restaurant. A return visit is guaranteed.

We dined here during the wine festival. Despite the crowds, we were quickly seated and served promptly. The schnitzel was delicious, the sauce perhaps a bit too salty, but I personally prefer it that way. The dishes and the interior could perhaps be a bit more colorful, but those are minor details. We'll definitely be back!

During a wonderful stay in Bernkastel-Kues, our path led us – almost naturally – to the restaurant Café Thiesen. Very tasty and not too expensive! Our highlights were the delicious French onion soup and the mushroom soup. As a vegetarian, you don't have much choice, but that's rarely unusual with traditional German cuisine.

I had an inside seat by the open window. It was good because of the heat, as there was no air conditioning. Several fans were set up. The schnitzel had a good coating. The meat was tender, but I couldn't tell if it was fresh or frozen. The cream of mushroom sauce tasted like a mixed-up ready-made sauce. The croquettes tasted good, but were a bit firm on the outside. The second dish was saumagen with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut stirred in. The consistency and taste were good. The salad plate for the starter was fresh and homemade. It tasted good. Prices were reasonable, service was friendly and quick. The decor was dated, but still cozy. The taste and value for money are okay. Can generally be recommended. The criticized restrooms were not used, so no information on their current condition can be provided. July 2025 Visited the location again. Essentially, nothing has changed since the 2024 review. The food may have deteriorated slightly in taste. The overall rating remained the same.

We went there for dinner yesterday – unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. Upon entering, the restaurant seemed uninviting: the decor was plain and cheap, and the first impression was rather off-putting. I ordered a rump steak with fries, cooked medium. When it was served and I cut into it, it quickly became clear: the meat was completely raw – only slightly seared on the outside. I sent it back. A short while later, a new piece arrived, but this one, too, was completely raw on the inside. Unfortunately, it was inedible again. The chef's third attempt didn't produce any better results – it was still raw. I left the restaurant just as hungry as I had arrived. One positive thing to note: The waitresses were very friendly, understanding, and obviously not the first time they had encountered this problem. They removed the dish from the bill and apologized several times. Nevertheless, our conclusion remains: We won't be back.

When we go to the Moselle, we always stop at Restaurant Thiesen at least once. The food is absolutely great and the price/performance ratio is also good. The service is friendly and quick. The restaurant is located right in the heart of the beautiful old town.

A superb discovery! Café Thiesen is a typical German restaurant which offers a wide variety of local specialties, all very well cooked. You can sense the mastery in the kitchen and the taste for good things. Special mention for the desserts, which are truly excellent! The staff is warm and welcoming, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. They were a little surprised to see (French!) tourists having dessert after the meal, but we ate really well from start to finish. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone passing through the area. Don’t leave without tasting the morello cherry waffles and/or a strudel – a real delight! Axel

The restaurant is beautiful, cozy and has a romantic rustic touch. The food is very tasty, fresh and quickly prepared. We enjoyed our meal with a real wine. We discovered the restaurant by chance, but the next time we visit the city we know where we will satisfy our hunger. Happy to recommend! You have to try the food at the Café Thiesen restaurant.

Visited with 5 other adults whilst visiting Bernkastel- Kues. Some of the party had eaten here before which is why we chose this restaurant. They also allowed us to bring in the family dog which was nice. The waitress was lovely and very attentive. The food and drink was nice and everybody enjoyed their meal. They even had a menu in English which was useful. Only downside is that the waffles were not as big as they use to be. Some of us had had the waffles before however they were much smaller this time. Overall, a lovely meal.

When choosing the restaurant, I followed the numerous positive reviews and when choosing the dishes, also based on the good reviews, among other things. consciously decided on the classic schnitzel. Unfortunately, I couldn't really understand the large number of very good reviews. Even considering the price, I would have expected better in terms of taste and quality. What I don't understand is how an operator can expect such disgusting toilets from their guests. Mildew/mold stains are clearly visible over large areas in the women's toilet; according to a male guest, the same applies to the men's toilet. If I had seen the toilet before ordering, I would have literally lost my appetite. Unfortunately, the attentive and friendly service staff didn't make up for this last deficiency for me.

We were looking for a nice restaurant that was open on January 2nd. Had to do some searching until we got here. There was also a place available for us in the well-filled restaurant. The service was good and we didn't have to wait long. Neither on food nor on drinks. The prices were reasonable and not too expensive. The rump steak was great...I can really recommend it. All in all a good restaurant that I would go to again.

We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor and we are so glad we stopped for dinner. Service was great and the food was delicious! Generous portions too. Would recommend this restaurant. I went there with my wife for the Christmas market, very good service, food was great. A complaint was handled professionally and we were not fobbed off with the stupid saying "I'll pass it on to the kitchen". Happy to come back!
