Ox Hotel in Heitersheim

We went there for a meal and opted for burgers. Unfortunately, they were served with far too much sauce—a BBQ sauce that was sour and simply overpowering. The meat was good, as was the cheese. The bun was homemade, but not like a proper burger bun; it was too soggy. The fries were underwhelming. Overall, we were very disappointed. The atmosphere is nice, and the service is friendly.

I went there for dinner. The food and portions were very good.

The staff at check-in were very unfriendly and unprofessional. They were grumpy and annoyed. The room was partly very dirty and worn. Everything was very dusty, as if no one had cleaned it in a long time. I can't understand the reviews saying it was clean—absolutely zero. All the pictures will follow later! I have to take them all first.

I stayed at this hotel with my family for two nights and unfortunately cannot recommend it. I ordered a currywurst in the hotel restaurant. The menu explicitly stated "homemade curry sauce" with fries and mayo. I never received the mayo. The sauce had nothing to do with curry sauce—at least not with the German curry sauce advertised on the menu. It definitely wasn't curry sauce; it tasted strongly of barbecue. I'm pretty sure it was made from a packet mix—and if it was actually homemade, that would be even worse, because it was completely inappropriate. Thin, watery, and utterly out of place. The dish was a total disaster. The sausage was okay, the fries were fine too, but nothing special. The rest of my family's meal was somewhat better, but still far from what I would expect given the, in my opinion, high prices. When I told the waitress that the sauce had nothing to do with curry sauce, she just laughed at me. She insisted that couldn't be right because the cook was from Sri Lanka—as if that had anything to do with a German currywurst. Following that logic, the cook would have to be from Berlin to make a truly good currywurst. Breakfast also left a negative impression. It's only included until 10:00 a.m. We'd been sitting at our table since just after 9:00 a.m. and wanted to order a coffee around 9:45 a.m. The waitress completely ignored us, chatted with colleagues, and then, as if by chance, appeared at exactly 10:01 a.m.—one minute after breakfast had ended—and told us we now had to pay extra for the coffee. Frankly, this seemed deliberate and very unfriendly. Regarding the room: The hotel advertises on its website as an "old building, new design" and "only new rooms." If this is what they call new, I don't want to know what the old ones were like. The room was small, stuffy, and had no air conditioning, only an old, rickety fan. Completely unacceptable in a hot region. On top of that, the room was in a terrible state: the plaster was peeling in places, and there were black spots on the window that I'm pretty sure are mold. There were also cobwebs and dust everywhere – overall, it just wasn't clean. What bothered me even more was that after the first night, no one came to clean or change the towels. I had assumed the room would be cleaned automatically unless I requested otherwise – and that I only needed to let them know if I didn't want it cleaned (as is common practice in many hotels for environmental reasons). Here, it was exactly the opposite: I had to actively ask someone to clean the room. I wasn't aware of this, and so everything, including the wet towels, was simply left there. I found this system very unfortunate. The bathroom was also problematic. The first time I showered, the door was difficult to open, but I could still open it. However, when I got out, I couldn't open it at all. I had to push against it with considerable force and was genuinely afraid the glass would shatter. It wasn't a pleasant feeling – I decided against showering the next day. I had to actively request that someone clean the room. And a word about the website: It claims the atmosphere is "young, casual, and lively." I can certainly confirm that—the waitress was very relaxed, on her phone, and happened to be there until exactly 10 a.m. However, I strongly doubt the claim that they "cook well and taste good." The only positive thing to mention is the breakfast itself—the small platter was tasty and the only thing that was even remotely satisfactory during this stay. In conclusion: Big promises on the website, but little substance. Unfriendly service, unsuitable food, no comfort, inadequate cleanliness, and no discernible interest in the guests. Unfortunately, not recommended in any respect.

The waitress prefers to use her cell phone and play audio. In general, the service is slowly inattentive and often doesn't know what's being ordered. The food there tastes awful; we had a potato and chanterelle soup that was extremely vinegary and tasted like pickled cucumber. The dish of the day was beef stroganoff, where the meat tasted of vinegar with every bite. The salads, soups, and mashed potatoes were barely seasoned or not seasoned at all! On top of that, they said the soup of the day was sweet, but it was sour and tasted of vinegar. Absolutely not recommended!

Very tasty breakfast, plentiful and fresh. Very friendly staff. 5 years later: My impression has changed a lot: breakfast for two, an apple spritzer, an orange juice, a latte, and a latte, for just under €50. Breakfast for two costs €28.90, which doesn't include a drink, and the quality was not at all impressive. I'm very sorry, but for that price, I can get a rich buffet and much better quality elsewhere. Good luck for the future

Great ambience, great service, and good menu

We stayed at the Ox for two nights and have been coming here about once a year for several years. Unfortunately, we noticed that the quality, especially of the breakfast, has deteriorated significantly. Before the coronavirus pandemic, there was a lavish buffet; today, there's a separate menu for hotel guests, which seems very poorly designed and significantly inferior in both scope and quality to the menu for non-residents. The service was friendly but very slow and, at times, poorly informed. We had a room on the top floor, which overheated considerably; unfortunately, there is no air conditioning. Overall, the Ox is still a beautiful hotel, but has significantly declined in quality over the past few years. It would be nice if it could return to its former quality with a few simple adjustments.

Lovely family meal , large meals and good selection something for everyone

We originally chose this hotel because of its high review score, but after looking more closely, most of the reviews were actually for the restaurant. We had dinner there one night and to be fair, it was quite good. Unfortunately, as a hotel, it was a complete disappointment. If you’re thinking about booking, keep the following in mind: - There’s no elevator. - There’s no AC. Beware if you are thinking about staying during hot summer days. The rooms get very very warm. There's only one standing fan per room. On our third day we asked for another one and luckily we did get it. - If you stay for several days, they don’t actually clean the room. They just make the bed, replace the towels, and restock the toilet paper. - The shower leaks water all over the bathroom floor. - The hair dryer was old and sticky. - There’s no mini fridge. - There’s no safe. - Breakfast is not self-service so you may have to wait a while to be served (the blond girl and the tall slim girl are very nice. The other lady not so much).

The coffee and service are top-notch, the food has never disappointed me, and the location is highly recommended, especially if you want to sit outside in good weather.

Compared to a few years ago, the music in the bar/restaurant is now very loud, but luckily we were able to sit outside to eat. The food and drinks were excellent, with a delicious Wiener Schnitzel. The room was a bit warm and stuffy, and there was no air conditioning. Opening the window was unfortunately too noisy. Breakfast is good with plenty of choice for everyone. Vegetarian dishes are on the menu. The Ox Hotel remains a great place to stay overnight if you're traveling to Switzerland or Italy!

Used the hotel as a stopover on the way to Italy and back. Excellent rooms and restaurant👌. And a good location near the highway. Unfortunately, the evening bar staff were very unfriendly and curt. It seems to only be with foreigners, as they are very friendly with German guests. A real shame considering what is otherwise a great hotel.

The room was apparently renovated not too long ago. Climate change had already been a concern for a long time. And now a €30 fan is supposed to fix it. Sorry, that's probably fine from September to May, but hardly recommended in the summer.

The food was again very good. But unfortunately, it was too loud inside on a Tuesday evening to have a proper conversation at a table of six people. Eating is a social activity, after all, and if you can only really talk to the person next to you or across from you, I think that's a shame. The music selection probably wasn't conducive to that either. One idea: It might be helpful to reserve tables with one empty table in between, rather than one next to the other, as long as the entire place isn't full.

We celebrated our confirmation at Ox with almost 20 people and were very happy with the space, the food, and the staff! We had coffee and cake and dinner in the "Gallery," a separate, bright room with lots of windows and a beautiful wooden floor. We were able to easily coordinate the menu beforehand and decorate the room with our own items. During the ceremony, the very friendly staff looked after us with great care, relaxed style, and flexibility. The food was truly delicious! Tasty, well-seasoned, with fresh vegetables and a lovingly prepared dessert. The house wines were delicious. We were able to show a photo slideshow on the in-house projector and, in between, take a stroll through the vineyards directly from the hotel. Our confirmation candidate was overjoyed by the wonderful day. At the same time, a wedding party was celebrating in the conservatory, and despite the double workload, everything went smoothly and relaxed. A huge thank you to the entire team!

We spent two nights at the Ox Hotel and were overall very impressed by the successful mix of modern and rural flair. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and we also really enjoyed the breakfast. The excellent value for money deserves special mention. However, we would like to point out two critical points: 1. Unfortunately, several employees in the service and kitchen areas repeatedly behaved in a passive-aggressive and distant manner towards us – whether when looking for a parking space, ordering breakfast, or checking in. However, we would like to specifically highlight the younger team members, who, in contrast, were consistently friendly and helpful. 2. We found the design of the bathroom in the room problematic: It was separated from the sleeping area only by a glass door with a partial screen, which provided neither acoustic nor visual privacy. Furthermore, the bedroom was strongly illuminated at night by the light in the bathroom, which was perceived as disturbing. Overall, it was a pleasant stay with many positive impressions, but it was marred by the aforementioned restrictions.

In itself a very nice restaurant and hotel.. what you read here as far as the service goes, it depends on who is on duty.. it fluctuates hugely from great to gruesomely bad and unfriendly.. Breakfast would be good but not ideal for a business traveler. Service at the table is charming, but the implementation is not good. Sometimes you wait up to 15-20 minutes until you have everything at the table. I personally find the buffet better and more flexible for the guest (and I stay in hotels a lot).. but in the end that is also a subjective perception.

My experience at the Hotel Ox in Heitersheim When you arrive and are greeted with a genuine smile, you immediately feel welcome. And that's exactly what happened to us at the Hotel Ox: The entire team was warm, attentive and just really friendly 🫶. You can tell that there are people at work here who put their heart and soul into their job - and as a guest you can feel that in every moment. And then you discover a second great strength of the company: sustainability – with passion! In the bathroom we were able to admire a shower towel that was clearly past its prime - frayed, venerable and obviously full of memories 🧵✂️. At home it wouldn't have been given a reprieve - but here it is still used with respect. As long as a towel still has threads, it will be loved. The drinking glasses in the room are also symbolic of the ecological idea: they can provide loyal service - for several days at a time. Why wash up when you can enjoy sustainably? ♻️ As part of this philosophy, care is also taken to ensure that spider webs are not vandalized - because the little residents should also be allowed to continue to catch insects 🕸️. And the dust cloth is apparently not subjected to unnecessary strain - after all, it should last a long time. Who needs sterile perfection when you can also have gentle eco-charm? And now, without irony: the food was really good! 🍽️ The service is warm, the atmosphere is pleasant. Sure – a few convenience products find their way onto the plate, especially the fried potatoes, which deserve a little more crunch 🥔. And the salad? Freshness instead of canned flair would have been the icing on the cake 🥗. But overall, the dishes were tasty, honest and filling - and that's what counts. Conclusion: A great short vacation in Breisgau ☀️ with honest hospitality, a sustainable (and quite original) concept - and lots of charm. Whether it's a towel with a story, a spider's web with a purpose or glasses that can be used for several days - here sustainability is interpreted in a very unique, endearing way.

The Baden trio, the tarte flambée, pike perch. The price and quality are right, as is the friendly service. All around very successful. Thank you!

What just happened here? I used to be a regular guest and was always happy. Today prices have gone down, but quality has deteriorated. You can't compensate for that with quantity. You have to get salt and pepper yourself at the counter, the table is smeared, the cutlery isn't really clean, the sanitary facilities need to be replaced. The staff was very nice, but sometimes overwhelmed. Too bad.

Food ok but not satisfactory value for money. Service is hardly available, unfortunately it takes a while until someone comes to order something. The smell in the toilet is almost unbearable.

We were again at the OX, several people, reserved in advance,... We had nice places, even outdoors depending on the weather, perfect for the children. However, the service was clearly overwhelmed (3 people at the table service + 1 person drinks) for us + 5 or 6 small tables. We had a currywurst - unfortunately the fries were totally soggy! When asked about it by the waitress, he just said “I’m sorry”. It's a shame, the old cook is gone, no restaurant manager on site - so for 2 cyclists with the sausage, gone again for an inedible €21. NOT recommended!!! The waiting times are also unprofessional... a shame

We were there for coffee and cake in the afternoon. Delicious and nice selection, unfortunately the size of the two pieces was very different. At the same (proud) price, of course. The restaurant was empty except for one other table for two, but our request to turn the music down a little was rejected on the grounds that they couldn't turn the music down EVEN. I always find it too loud here and that's why I no longer come here to eat in the evenings.

Hello! So much for my visit to this restaurant yesterday!!! I'll start with the bad feedback! A young brunette who just walks around serious and arrogant is not a solution for the restaurant! I'll be honest, in my opinion this restaurant needs employees like the other two colleagues who smile beautifully, are very friendly and attentive! Otherwise I would say the food was good and I would like to come again.

This evening I ordered the "Badische Dreierlei" at Ox, which consists of sausage salad, Brägele and Bibiliskä. The plate was beautifully presented, and both the sausage salad and the Brägele were tasty, although I would have liked a little more Brägele. The Bibiliskäs, however, was a big disappointment. It tasted and felt like mayonnaise - something I would never have associated with Bibiliskäs in my life. My sister, who also ordered the "Badische Dreierlei", also had to eat mayonnaise with her sausage salad and Brägele. When we pointed this out to the waitress, she initially responded with understanding and inquired in the kitchen. Unfortunately the answer came that everything was fine. I was perplexed and asked if the chef had even tried the Bibiliskäs. The waitress had no answer and the topic was not pursued further. When paying, the issue was again ignored and there was no further response or apology from staff. Overall, the food was partly good, but the Bibiliskäs and the way we dealt with our criticism really spoiled the evening. For just under €19 per person, I expect more care and attention, especially when it comes to traditional dishes like the "Baden Dreierlei".

A few days ago we returned to our favorite restaurant and were so happy to see the redheaded waitress again! The service was excellent as always - friendly, attentive and with a smile. Kudos to the team!

The entire meal was not asked once if we needed anything else. Ordered fries for the schnitzel, which never arrived despite asking twice. Food was okay.

We ate here today because we still had two vouchers. In general the food was good, but we were unfortunately disappointed with the service. Not once were we asked if we needed anything else and after they forgot to bring us fries we were told they were still coming. When we were all finished with the main course, they still weren't there and we rejected them. My starter dishes were still on the table!!!! We won't see each other here again in the future.

I was here again today for the first time in a while, and it was also my last time. They don't pay any attention to you when you walk in. The food isn't what it used to be. Sad but true! Never again.

The hotel was clean. The waiters were nice. A bit expensive but everything is good.

Subterranean service was absolutely unfriendly. I had hair in my food and no one apologized or offered any compensation. We waited forever for our food. The burger was disappointing, the rump steak was okay.

We had dinner at OX this evening. We had high expectations based on the menu and the prices. However, my husband and I were very disappointed. The fries weren't cooked through, the meat was quite tough and the food overall didn't seem really fresh. My parents, on the other hand, were relatively happy with duck breast and pike perch fillet. You could now say “we ordered it wrong”. But I think that everything should be okay given the prices. In any case, we will not visit the OX again. A lot has to happen with the food.

This is a very pleasant restaurant-bar-hotel, with a generous choice of menus and very good service! The setting (village, river) is appreciable. Everything is clean. Only negative point: The soundproofing of the renovated rooms is poor.

I was there in the hotel from 11/27/24 - 11/29/24. I can't understand some of the bad reviews here. The staff is extremely nice and quick in service. The food and breakfast were top. My hotel room was very spacious and clean. The only thing that might be necessary again would be to visit a painter. There are a few scuff marks from the armchairs on the wall. But overall I was very satisfied and would come back there again and again.

The rooms are a bit old. The cleaning condition is only superficial. The room was quite noisy. Breakfast is not offered as a buffet, you receive a card with possible menus. Unfortunately, half of it ends up in the trash.

It's very nice here - a great atmosphere (modern yet cozy). The food is high quality and delicious. The staff is relaxed and professional at the same time - Irini from the service should be particularly highlighted - she is on the ball, fast and friendly, always has a joke on her lips and can handle conflict situations well. We'd love to come back!

Great hotel. Stayed there for four days with our cycling club. With almost 30 people Good varied breakfast and good choice of dinner. Very hospitable team of employees. They also had a nice separate room for our club where we could sit. Definitely recommended for groups.

Very friendly staff. The lunch menu is quite good in terms of taste. Unfortunately, due to the price increases (understandable these days), the offer is no longer attractive to us, which is why our visits are no longer coming. In the summer it was nice to sit outside, but I would always recommend sitting inside. More comfortable seats and more pleasant temperatures.

Cozy atmosphere on both the terrace outside and inside the restaurant. I would make a reservation in high season. The terrace is popular in the area. Service is friendly and correct. Price/quality is in balance. Sloss Heitersheim is beautiful, within walking distance and with a fascinating history. The various half-timbered houses and the small center have an attractive appearance. Furthermore, a beautiful, relaxing environment where you can enjoy walking and cycling.

Perfect service in the beer garden. Although all the tables were occupied, the waitress Josy kept an overview, was quick, friendly, reliable and also gave a helpful wine recommendation.

30€ for a schnitzel with fries?! I have no problem paying well for good food, but that's as far from reality as possible. The fries were anything but crispy and the schnitzel was nothing special either. Just a shame!

It was an experience that I don't want to experience again... first the positive. The food is good with room for improvement. But what doesn't work at all is how the staff treat each other. No structure, no leadership, arguing in front of the guests is an absolute no-go. A young man behind the bar who is characterized by completely uncollegial behavior. We have often been to Ox in Heitersheim, which used to be a great restaurant. Every time it gets worse, it tastes like nothing and is overpriced for the quality. We had the asparagus with scratches, the asparagus was totally tasteless and the pancakes inside were still doughy. Also the veal slices with spaetzle. The spaetzle tasted like it came from a ready-made package and was fried quickly, the sliced ​​meat was dry and tough. The sauce tasted like any ready-made sauce from the supermarket. The tarte flambée, on the other hand, was delicious, hence the star… The service is very good, the conditions are friendly and fast!! All in all, it's a shame, the restaurant lives more from its long reputation than from good food.

The OX restaurant in Heitersheim has an ideal location and a modern and comfortable interior as well as a great outdoor area and garden terrace which is very centrally located with plenty of parking nearby. Starting with the friendly service, at which point I have to highlight Valentina because there aren't many such friendly, personable and attentive service staff anymore, to the flexible and very well-trained chef who prepares the delicious dishes, to the counter service, everything is very good recommend. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, which shouldn't be missing these days. From the starters to the main courses to the desserts, everything tasted great and the portions were more than sufficient. A restaurant to come back again and again to have a great time.

We have been to OX several times. Including overnight stay. Always a very good experience so far: Beautiful rooms, everything was very well maintained, the food was really delicious and the service was always very nice and courteous. The location... Well, we were in Freiburg and in the Vitra Museum. You don't know whether you would otherwise want to go on holiday in Heitersheim. But I can recommend the OX!

A hotel in a location that seemed designed for a visit from my family. A very friendly and courteous service (despite working at Christmas), rooms with beautiful furnishings that leave nothing to be desired and the location directly in Heitersheim give a really well-rounded picture. The service was unfriendly from the start, then increasingly completely anti-social, became loud and deliberately portrayed us customers as liars because she didn't WANT to see her own mistake. In the end we had to pay more than 20€ more due to completely false statements from the waitress (we asked if there was an extra charge - she told us clearly NO, it doesn't cost anything). There was absolutely no sign of insight, the service became rude, insulting and even louder. She even ripped the receipt out of your hand when we pointed out something was wrong) In my opinion, the waitress should be able to correctly answer simple questions regarding the menu. It is very shocking to experience how, as a customer, you are exposed in such an absolute injustice by the waitress and in front of all the other guests. I have never experienced such anti-social customer interaction and unfortunately it cannot be topped in terms of impudence! I will never visit this restaurant again and will certainly recommend it to everyone else. I really hope that this doesn't have to happen to other guests. I could mention a lot more, but it's simply beyond words how you, as a guest, are attacked there (immediately after just the slightest comment!). - Not to forget the food itself: it was average, nothing special and nothing disgusting. However, for what it is, it is very expensive.

OX is a very good restaurant with delicious dishes and wines.

They lied to you and simply charged you for another, more expensive meal. They charge €15 more for something we didn't have. When we pointed this out to them, they portrayed us as liars and lied about everything to sell more expensive food. They became very aggressive and both shouted in an incredibly disrespectful manner. Very bad!!!

Wir waren auf der Durchreise und nur zum Mittagessen dort. Das Essen war super lecker, die Atmosphäre sehr angenehm und die Bedienung sehr nett, freundlich und einwandfrei. Auch unsere Hunde durften mit rein. Ein gutes Gastroerlebnis. Danke.
