Our experience at Oukan was unfortunately very mixed. We were really looking forward to the special vegan dinner with tea on our trip to Berlin, but our excitement gradually faded over the course of the evening and ultimately left hungry and disappointed. Our review in summary: + Modernly furnished restaurant with an exciting ambiance and futuristic architecture + Creative kombucha creations + We really enjoyed the amouse bouche, the artichoke/sunflower seed dish, and the corn dish (for an extra charge). BUT: - The menu sequence made no sense to us and followed no discernible logic. This wasn't explained to us either. - The incredibly sour daikon course (melon ball and vinegar jelly) and the salty tapioca waffle were absolutely inedible. - The portions were truly tiny. Our "main course," for example, was a few pickled tomatoes and watermelon in a broth. In a small glass. - The tea accompaniment was inexplicably served asynchronously with the meal. In some cases, we received warm tea more than 20 minutes before the accompanying dish. By the time we could taste both dishes together, it was cold. - The service was generally pleasant, but uninspired. The meal dragged on, and the waits between courses were consistently too long for us. Water wasn't refilled, criticism of an overly salty dessert was simply dismissed with a smile, and even an honest response that not everything was tasty was simply accepted without any genuine concern. With a bill of over €400 for two people, the value for money is simply not right. Such a shame, and absolutely not worth a repeat visit.

My girlfriend treated me for a birthday dinner at Oukan and I absolutely loved it. The atmosphere is great, with a modern, dimly lit interior with some traditional elements sprinkled in. The courses were all magnificent and I loved the theme of fermented foods. My favorite course here must have been the mushroom dish and the interesting selection of teas.

Returning from Oukan for the 4th time and we are so grateful places like this exists!! The highlight of the experience is definitely Joyce that puts so much love and attention into the tea pairing (we had one with alcohol and one with tea). This is definitely not your standard restaurant and expect the unexpected. Out of all the times we have been this definitely felt like the staff overall was not super well trained and experience. However for us Joyce who presents the tea makes up for it all. Highly recommend and will definitely be back! :):)

An absolute incredible experience! It is quite expensive, however, worth every dollar. The service was fantastic. The fact that it is in this backyard and a little bit hidden, gives a very magical experience to it. You really feel like you’re tapping into a different world. The cocktails were something quite unique. The food was served with kindness, and the plates looked like they were art pieces. The interior design puts you into a mood for either doing a big business deal or having the most romantic date with your partner. you have a lot of privacy. This is a must see restaurant in Berlin.

Had a lovely evening at Oukan last night. Service was great. Interesting flavours and an overall it was an amazing experience. We took 8-course tasting menu with a tea pairing. My favourite dishes were definitely the mushrooms ones - kombujime and maitake. As well as the miso truffle which was DIVINE (!). Some courses included medicinal flavours of tarragon and anise, which were interesting but not my favourite. If you take tea pairing, it includes 2 kombuchas which I didn’t expect and would’ve preferred to know in advance as it made us all feel a little bloated later. Also some of the teas we got were too bitter and as someone who has worked in tea shops, this is generally a sign of tea not brewed properly. Would’ve expected tea pairing to be better. I Am looking forward to visit them again in a few months when the menu changes, and I hope tea pairing will be improved 🙏🏼 The vibe of the whole place is really great thought and I definitely recommend to visit!

The almost hidden entrance hints at the mystery and surprise that await us. Upon passing through the mirrored corridor, we’re immersed in a sensory experience that culminates in the main dining room, a true "temple of umami." With its high ceiling, spacious and minimalist ambiance, the soft lighting and decor featuring natural materials create a serene and elegant atmosphere. Since it was a warm day, we started dinner with a Toki Highball, a refreshing drink made with Toki Japanese whisky. This young, smooth, and refreshing whisky, with a subtle hint of spices and lingering fruity notes on the palate, was the perfect choice to begin the evening. The appetizer positively surprised us: a warm and extremely flavorful Japanese brioche, accompanied by preserves, small portions, and fresh aromatic oil. Everything was delicious and invited us to eat with our hands, creating different flavor variations with each bite. Next came the Skewers, so creative and complex in flavor that it was almost a game to taste and savor each one. For me, the special highlights were the beetroot with salsa macha and the hispi cabbage and gomaae. The dessert, equally playful and rich, was delicious and crowned the experience as an unforgettable grand finale. Drinks That Elevate the Experience - The food was truly delicious and surprising, especially considering it’s a 100% plant-based cuisine. And the drinks didn’t disappoint: I was particularly curious about OUKAN's much-talked-about teas. Not every restaurant has an in-house tea sommelier! I tried the three teas offered on the menu: the cold brew sencha, the kobasoda, and the genmaicha. All were wonderful! Tasting teas in this format was something I had never experienced, and I absolutely loved it – it greatly enriched my experience. I highly recommend it! My husband, on the other hand, chose wines, and we couldn’t miss the careful selection by sommelier Jonathan Gobbi. He is responsible for curating the labels that make up OUKAN’s wine list, complementing the inventive Japanese vegan and fermented cuisine of the house, which is undoubtedly not an easy task. Jonathan managed to pair the unique flavors of OUKAN’s dishes with the wines in a way that elevated our experience. Besides his deep knowledge, he knows how to communicate, guiding us through the options in an accessible and pleasant way, making the beverage selection an integral part of the gastronomic journey. In short: At OUKAN, the cuisine is truly innovative. A sommelier who stands out – whether for wines or teas – needs to have profound knowledge and an eye that goes beyond the obvious, perfectly aligning with the restaurant's philosophy. Everyone deserves congratulations! Considering the distinct ambiance, the innovative and high-quality vegan cuisine with a focus on fermentation, and the acclaimed tea and wine pairings, OUKAN offers a truly unique fine dining experience in Berlin. We had the 5-course menu twice, including the mixed drinks accompaniment once. The service dropped glasses and a tablet right behind us twice, leaving shards everywhere. We were startled twice. That shouldn't happen at this level. We think the bill of around €260 for two people is absolutely excessive for what you get. We started with a sweeter course and ended with tomato water sorbet. Courses 1-3 were good, not outstanding, but not bad either. Finely crafted, a lot of emphasis is placed on the processes, lots of fermentation, etc. Course 4 tasted like New Year's Eve firecrackers, not a bad thing, more interesting. Course 5 was the sorbet, which sounds sweet but isn't really; it was more acidic due to the tomato water. We would have preferred something different. The drinks, a mix of teas and wine/sake, weren't worth it for us. One tea smelled very unpleasant of feet/eggs. The taste and the smell took some getting used to. I'd rather have the cocktails. We can't fathom how the concept will work in the long run. Even the incredibly beautiful setting can't save it. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back, which is a shame!

I think the price/performance ratio for the food is very good; a creative menu with some unusual/complicated fermentation products. Service wasn't outstanding; many of the waiters couldn't fully explain the courses, and detailed questions about the food couldn't be answered. Often, not all of the ingredients could be identified... the ladies who served us most of the time had little interest in explaining the meal in detail or even asking if we were satisfied. Of course, people were happy to ask questions to get an answer from the kitchen... but for a restaurant in this price range, I expect a bit more expertise! We didn't have any wine or tea to accompany it, and the waiters couldn't provide any more details in advance than "yes, we do." In summary: very good food, mediocre service at best.

Two of us went to the vegan fine dining restaurant and had the 8-course menu. The food tasted truly outstanding – creative, well-thought-out, and of a high standard. The interior of the restaurant itself is also very stylish, clean, and pleasant – you can tell that a lot of attention is paid to aesthetics. However, at a price of €100 per person, we were somewhat disappointed with the overall experience. The service was friendly, but not particularly attentive or consistent – the waiters changed frequently, which made the experience seem somewhat impersonal. The biggest criticism, however, is the entrance area: Upon arrival, we were greeted by garbage containers and, unfortunately, a rat. The door to additional garbage bins was open, and there were lots of flies flying around – it just doesn't look inviting and significantly spoils the first impression. For a restaurant in this price range, the exterior setting should also be just right. Conclusion: The food was very good, but in our opinion, the overall package doesn't quite match the high price. With a stronger focus on service and a clean, well-maintained entrance area, the experience could be significantly enhanced.

The experience is very very nice! Most of the food was very impressive. Tea pairing was also good, but 50/50 hit, it was heavy on bitter types of cold brew teas. But when it hit, it was a star of the show. -1 star is for the desert called amazake.. we were a group of four and two of use didn’t eat it, men had to eat two portions for us. It had too intense taste of something very specific that completely replaced all balanced tastes from previous dishes.

It physically pains me to leave a 3* review when there is so much that Oukan does well. The whole experience is extremely hit and miss. First the compliments- The menu is entirely vegan and the food is excellent. Not life changing, but some of the dishes are truly exceptional- the asparagus tartar with almond cream, the mushroom dish and the dessert to name a few were all excellent. Complex and unique, thoroughly enjoyed them. The bread was also fantastic though maybe a stretch to list it as a separate course. The ambiance is also very nice. Quiet, spacious and feels very private. I thought it was also very special that the chef delivered some of the dishes- this was a nice touch. Complaints- The beverage pairing was clunky and disorienting. For the 8 courses, we ended up with 5 teas, 1 wine, 1 sake and 1 sherry. Two of the teas paired beautifully (sakura with the mushroom dish and the jasmine with dessert). However, the wine was not a good match and tasted metallic with the food (the kohlrabi and celeriac dish). Sherry not my thing and did not drink, same thing with sake. Would have been better off ordering beverages a la carte. 80€ per head is simply too much for 5 teas and a small glass of wine, plus a sherry and sake. I would have expected at least three full size glasses of wine for this plus several pots of tea. Service was not what you would expect for a meal costing 450€ for two people. It was not unfriendly, but definitely not warm. It was attentive but only at times. It really felt like the service staff were not cohesive as a team. Kind of like a sports team where there might be one or two good players but they just can’t score because they aren’t passing well. It was like that.. Dishes had oddly spaced timing intervals, and I think that the beverages may have been served at incorrect timings or pairings eg. Sommelier mistook that we had finished the pairing when it hadn’t been served for that dish yet. Gratuity option was 10/15/20% which I felt was offensive to expect a minimum of 10% when service was not great. I am happy to tip generously, wherever I am in the world but service should be exceptional, especially at this price point. TLDR: Food: 4*, however some dishes exceptional Beverage pairing: 1.5* Service: 2.5* Ambiance: 4.5*

I was here a few years ago and was absolutely thrilled with the atmosphere and the set menu. Unfortunately, the quality of the dishes has declined significantly. There were five of us, and unfortunately, everyone confirmed that we lacked the flavor, consistency, and vision behind the dishes. Getting winter vegetables in the summer that weren't particularly tasty is a real shame for the price. The ambiance is still beautiful, and as you can see from the pictures, the dishes were beautifully presented. Unfortunately, this beautiful ambiance also led to higher expectations of the food and service. The service was also poor. Not particularly attentive, not friendly (except for the host, who opened the door for us and escorted us to our table). We only received an explanation of the dishes upon request. The serving of the plates was unfortunately not of a higher standard either. If the food had been better, these things wouldn't have bothered us, but unfortunately, they also detracted from the experience. For the price, you expect much more. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't pleasant for us, and we wouldn't recommend Oukan to anyone.

The staff member who looked after us over the evening was incredibly good, even though it was only her second day at Oukan. We have rarely felt so comfortable. Would love to come back.

The Oukan is very aesthetically decorated. The food is incredibly creative and finely balanced. We had the 4-course tasting menu. The first course was chicory, we both thought it wasn't for us but we were really impressed. I have rarely had such creative fine dining. The non-alcoholic tea pairing harmonized perfectly with the food and was very loving. Great restaurant. I will definitely come again!

An opera of flavours. Any conversation topic you bring to the table will be dimmed by an intense need to describe to your dining partners the combination of flavours, textures, smells, and colours you're experiencing. Wanted to discuss your Goodreads recommendations? Recent developments in AI safety? House renovation plans? Forget it. You'll end up trying to find the right adjectives to describe the pictures created by the mosaic of sensation in your mouth and looking up ingredients whose fantasy-sounding names you're hearing for the first time. Like an opera, visiting Oukan is nearly overpowering for all the senses, with dimmed light and minimalist decor accentuating all aspects of the dishes and non-patronising, attentive staff accompanying you like a caring opera choir. Sensory immersion is so deep that you won't even have the mental bandwidth to document the experience as food pics for instagram. Special kudos for a new take on sorrel. Turned into a palate-cleansing sorbet became a very different experience than the childhood nightmare of many Polish kids, the sorrel soup. Misc thoughts: Absolutely top use of lights. Worth dressing up for. Both caffeinated and decaf tea pairing is worth it. this is 8/5 stars. For real.

Three of us ate here and were pleasantly surprised! The ambience is very inviting - spacious without seeming too industrial. The music was pleasant and not loud, the food came quickly and was very varied, also in terms of the dining experience. The different courses were very tasty and original. You should just note that with the large drink pairing with alcohol, you really get a full-size alcoholic drink with each course, which is a lot for 7-9 courses. I had the tea pairing and it was wonderful and perfectly paired with the food. This restaurant is worth it for that special occasion! We went home full and had a lovely evening.

A unique experience. I was a little hesitant when making the reservation because the price can easily lead to disappointment. However, as both vegans and omnivores, we were thrilled. The courses were all appealing and tasty in their own very different way and were well presented. The dishes really deserve to be called fine dining! Even though we chose tea from the menu instead of the tea accompaniment, I would particularly like to praise the tea. We really enjoyed the visit.

The place is beautiful, the staff very friendly and attentive. But the food... just wasn't very good. Maybe two of the 9 courses we had I really liked, and one of them was a little salty (and I like salt!). The rest were either unremarkable or everything was pushed to the max: saltiness, acidity, spice... it just wasn't balanced. And that's just not good enough for a 99€+ menu.

This is the kind of place that makes me regret giving any other place a 5 star just so I could have saved that for this level of excellence. I took my dad here for his first experience with fine dining. He isn't a fan of much other than red wine. The sommelier (Jonathan) very kindly accomodated the alcohol pairing to this wish without compromising anything from the quality. The dinner was amazing. It is my second time in Oukan and it remains one of my top 3 restaurants, all around Europe for fine dining. The chef has a diverse palette of tastes, textures and styles mastered. The serve nice selection of both warm and cold courses (unlike some who only serve cold), with an expert emphasis on fermentation. I frequently remember the pickled radishes from my last visit and wish I could find more of them. The chef can make even the most common of the ingredients into a delicacy through fermentation. My father had a magical experince that turned him from saying "Fine dining seems like a scam" to "I can't wait to visit again". And I will definetly be returning for every menu update.

The food was exceptionally delicious and creative! We got to know new flavors here that we haven't gotten anywhere else. The tea accompaniment in particular was an absolute highlight! Our visit to oukan was great. We expected something special but it far exceeded our expectations. First of all, the atmosphere and decor. Everything is kept dark with the perfect exposure. The service was very friendly and offered us a table in the corner so that the dog could accommodate better. The courses were each full of such fine and exciting flavors, it was such a joy to enjoy them. Every course was so pretty and lovingly prepared. There was nothing that was boring, every bite was a taste explosion. Very special highlights were the sauces and broths, which were very spicy and umami. The desserts were also a blast. Thank you! Could this have been the best meal of my life? The next day I reflect and say quite possibly. A transformative meal with friends as a wedding gift. This is not our usual type of meal and my wife is vegetarian (and I try not to stray too far to the dark side) so many traditional high end places don’t fit the bill or aren’t worth it since she won’t be prioritized on the menu. A wonderful atmosphere for healthy and creative Japanese-influenced vegan cuisine. In a booth with friends we enjoyed 4+ hours of course after course we will never forget. While it is difficult to summarize the depth and breadth of the plates, we loved the use of mushrooms (grilled, in dashi, in fermented noodles…) and the care with which the staff explained dishes and answered even our simple questions about wine or ingredients. We learned a great deal, left inspired and enjoyed so much our meal and the wonderful savors. Thank you to Oukan, the kitchen and the team.

The dishes, a stunner, an endless delight for the palate. Incomparable and unforgettable variations that are worthy of one (or more) Michelin stars. The service was excellent, attentive and friendly yet down-to-earth and human. In short: you feel completely comfortable and welcome. The ambience impresses with its darkness, purist clarity and accentuated light creations. The enormous ceiling height and a mirrored corridor in the entrance are impressive.

My impressions/opinion: Technical errors in the kitchen (bitter sauces, raw grilled ingredients). Waiting times of 25 minutes between each course made visiting a test of patience. Wine pairing didn't make a coordinated impression. The natural wines and sake were mostly meaningless in terms of taste and the acids were an annoyance to the stomach. We had some courses and glasses go back! Service inexperienced, but honestly tried. Not a single glass during our evening was free of water stains or dust or debris. Porcelain usually had chips. The greeting from the kitchen wasn't even positioned correctly on the table when we complained about the dust/hair in the small porcelain bowl. Despite the birthday being announced in advance, no attention. No goodwill regarding returned dishes. Atmosphere quite okay. A dark labyrinth of non-standard stairs. No amenities on the toilet. For a perceived 800kcal energy value without a significant proportion of fat and protein, overall unbalanced compositions, also in terms of price/performance (approx. €400 for 2P). Unfortunately there is no vegan restaurant after visiting which I can say I didn't miss anything. We finished it after more than 3 hours and left the restaurant feeling hungry. Consequently, I cannot recommend it.

The Oukan offers an exceptional and unique experience. The vegan, Japanese-inspired cuisine impresses with its variety and depth. Each course is presented with great care and attention to detail and accompanied by an excellent tea master. The service is almost perfect and the special types of tea enriched the entire experience. A small point of improvement would be the lack of signage to the toilets. Apart from that, I can only warmly recommend Oukan and am already looking forward to my next visit!

A culinary experience in a class of its own! Oukan presents cuisine that, in my opinion, is absolutely worthy of stars. The creative dishes take the taste buds on a fascinating journey. I was particularly impressed by three highlights: the Kombujime Eringi surprised with unique textures, the Kushiyaki offered perfectly grilled flavors, and the Ya Bao Sandwich was an ingenious fusion of tradition and innovation. The tea accompaniment deserves special mention - it rounds off the taste experience perfectly and highlights the nuances of the food. The service was consistently attentive and friendly. The staff took the time to explain the individual courses and were always available to answer questions. Oukan is definitely worth a visit and for me is one of the top addresses in the city. Absolutely recommended for gourmets and tea lovers!

I had a reservation for two people at your restaurant on August 21st. We were both very satisfied, for me personally it was completely new territory and I was very excited about it. The dishes were delicately seasoned, nothing was too much, nothing was too little. The different courses were explained in detail: the ingredients, the preparation, ... questions were asked about any intolerances. I have never experienced such friendly and courteous service. An unforgettable experience As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was amazed by the impressive interior design. A harmonious combination of design, colors and materials creates an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. The menu leaves plenty of room for surprises. My girlfriend and I went there to celebrate her birthday and the staff were just incredible. They were present and attentive the whole evening, which certainly made an impression. The food was just incredible, amazing flavours of vegan food with the highlights being different kinds of mushrooms. The whole experience was very nice. Service was very attentive and helpful and the food was simply amazing.. my wife doesn't really eat mushrooms but she was definitely in love with everything we had. If I should say something, it will only be that a few waiters I couldn't really understand but perhaps it was just acoustics and it was completely okay they were very authentic. Keep the good work!! A little biased towards a purely vegan “fine dining” menu, I was absolutely positively surprised at Oukan. Although Oukan doesn't have a Michelin star, its vegan menu is on par with those in starred restaurants. The welcome was warm, the interior and atmosphere unique. The service definitely deserves five stars and our 6 course meal was incredibly tasty. Each dish was prepared with great finesse and careful thought was given to how to cleverly present different flavors using purely plant-based components. There was an abundance of umami flavors with clear Japanese influences. A little culinary journey for the palate. For €89 it was a highly recommended experience!

For the complete 8-course menu (including the two optional dishes), including drinks, it costs almost exactly €200. This is fair. You don't leave hungry either :) Gladly again!

Probably the best dinner of my life so far. (Just that) The atmosphere that reigns in the place is really calming, the interior design is good, the accuracy of the lighting as well: subdued atmosphere while emphasizing the dishes that we are offered and that we take pleasure to observe. The acoustics are also perfect: you can hear others while maintaining a feeling of intimacy. Not all the servers delighted us, but the quality of the food we tasted surpasses everything! It was really delicious, full of tastes, textures, originality, all in sobriety... Absolutely brilliant, thank you.

You can definitely do it. Dishes are, as expected, tiny and extensively introduced before each course. Interesting in taste. But not the way I know it from Japan. Different but good nonetheless. Accompaniment with tea or wine is possible. However, keep your skin clean properly. We decided on the classic 1 course - 1 beer. After 4 hours it was done. The rooms are kept very dark and it appears valuable. In the end it was nice and a good start to the rest of the evening.

Four of us visited this restaurant and although the atmosphere was pleasant and the ambience was nicely designed, the overall experience was not adequate for the price. We were disappointed with a total bill of €720. It seems questionable to charge €7 for a bottle of water, especially if it is filtered tap water. Unfortunately the service left a lot to be desired. We had to wait an unusually long time for each course, sometimes up to an hour. It was also problematic that, despite repeated references to the fact that one person at the table only spoke English, the dishes were occasionally only explained in German. There were also other minor problems that I don't want to go into in detail. The drink accompaniment for €75 was significantly overpriced. The wines and sakes on offer were served in small portions of 0.1L, although comparable bottles only cost between €10 and €20 in stores. The food itself was very tasty, but the portions were, as usual with fine dining, quite small. Greater variety and creativity in the presentation would certainly have improved the overall experience. All in all it was an interesting experience, but the price of €180 per person was definitely too high for what was on offer.

At soy!, you'll find super delicious vegan food in a relaxed atmosphere. I'd especially like to highlight the bao buns… my absolute favorite appetizer, I could eat them all! 😍 The service was generally friendly, but a bit distracted at times, but that doesn't detract from the overall positive impression. If you're looking for creative, fresh, plant-based Vietnamese cuisine, this is definitely the place for you.

The dishes are lovingly prepared and look incredibly good. Unfortunately, the taste is a bit bland; we expected more. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are reasonable. The location is great, of course, and there's plenty of seating. Naturally, it's especially suitable for vegans and those who want to become vegan.
