Old Bank in Karlsruhe

We went there for dinner on New Year's Eve. The food was delicious, the service was very friendly, and the atmosphere was lovely.

Very nice atmosphere. The food was excellent. We had roast beef with Spätzle and salad. The staff were friendly and the food was served quickly.

We went for breakfast but were disappointed. We were regulars there for breakfast even before the pandemic. Then they stopped offering it, and they should have just left it at that. The pancakes were soaked in maple syrup and ice cold. The fruit on the plate wasn't fresh but canned. I had a roll with avocado and feta spread. It was a piece of baguette, carelessly topped, and very hard. We definitely won't be coming back for breakfast.

The service left much to be desired. The staff were barely visible. We had to wait over 20 minutes before we were paid and had to ask twice.

We had lunch there today, a group of three. The atmosphere is lovely; it was quiet enough to have a good conversation. The service was quick and very friendly. The pinsa and salad were good and reasonably priced. The drinks were also good. We'd gladly come again.

I would have liked to know when booking that a dance event was planned for that evening.

We were at the Christmas market and wanted to get something to eat, so we went to the Alte Bank restaurant. The service was very attentive. We ordered Zwiebelrostbraten (onion roast beef) and Steak de la Paris, and it arrived quickly. Both were cooked medium, from the first bite to the last. The taste was absolutely delicious! 😉

Unfortunately, that's no longer an option. After months of advance booking and a reminder the day before, our reservation was cancelled four hours before our restaurant visit with the explanation of a "private event." No apology, nothing – such behavior is absolutely unacceptable.

The service was far too slow and the staff completely disinterested. The food was probably pre-made schnitzel and cordon bleu, which arrived much too quickly. The breading was too uniform, and everything rose to the same height. It tasted like cardboard. No wonder it's so empty now. It's a shame, it used to be better. But I won't be back.

The food was unfortunately only mediocre. Salmon tagliatelle with exactly five pieces of salmon. Both the main course and the dessert were served without cutlery. We then had to get it ourselves, as the server couldn't manage to walk from the table to the bar. We also had to struggle to order more drinks. It was unfortunately not a relaxing dinner, which we then told the waiter who took our payment. This is a real shame, as this restaurant is a central meeting point for every visit to the Kammertheater.

The service was very courteous. I attended the "Comedy Night" cabaret. Unfortunately, there was a lot of background noise during the performances.

We were there in a really large group (about 30 people). The owner himself was in a terrible mood (God knows what) and thought he had to act like a DJ. The music was awful, but that wasn't even the problem. He kept turning it up incredibly loud out of nowhere, so everyone was completely annoyed. You couldn't even have a proper conversation. After the staff asked him to stop several times, he finally said, "Yeah, the owner doesn't care, he does what he wants." Yeah, thanks for that. I've never met a restaurant owner who doesn't care about making money. He actually managed to make us all leave after about an hour. I will never set foot in that place again. Absolutely outrageous!

The service and food were very good. The location is great. The only slight drawback is the noise level, which is probably due to the high ceilings.

My son wanted to dine at Old Bank. Since it was his birthday wish, we made a reservation. He was not disappointed. Once they knew that we had a reason to celebrate they went above and beyond to make it a special occasion!

If you value cleanliness, this is definitely not the place for you. All the chairs are greasy and dirty, making it unpleasant to sit in. The waiters kept forgetting our orders, which is also a negative. The noise and din due to the acoustics are also a big plus. If you want to sit and relax, choose another place.

A little renovation would do it good; the upholstery is worn and partly torn, the tables are scratched, and everything is showing its age. Otherwise, the ambiance is nice and cozy with chandeliers. The service was a bit annoyed but otherwise friendly and attentive.

We really enjoyed the food—especially the salad and the salmon pasta! 😊 Everything was very well prepared and fresh. Unfortunately, the delivery arrived a bit late, and the jars had a slight odor, which was a shame. Otherwise, we were very satisfied, thank you very much!

We had schniposa and linguine with shrimp. The schniposa was OK, but nothing more. The linguine with shrimp was advertised as containing chili oil and garlic. Unfortunately, the dish lacked both; it was very flavorless and very watery. I asked for chili oil, which unfortunately wasn't available, and opted for pepper instead. I found the portion too small. It's a shame, because the ambiance is very nice.

A very nice restaurant, but unfortunately the food is only cafeteria-quality. The food arrived 5 minutes after ordering. Schnitzel, fries, and salad, as well as linguine with shrimp. It's obviously not made fresh. It tasted accordingly, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, it wasn't very satisfactory. Service was very slow and the wait for food was very long, despite the low volume of customers. The menu is very small, and the oven was apparently broken (which can happen!!), but this wasn't communicated in advance. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it. The cheese spaetzle were tasty, though, but unfortunately, the wait wasn't worth it.

We weren't allowed to sit at the window seats, even though several were available. Normally, we would have had to leave the restaurant immediately. However, since we've always been very satisfied with the food in the past, we stayed. That was a mistake. The beef was cut much too thick, it got cold quickly, and there was a lot of fat on the meat. The potatoes were gone – the alternative, unfortunately, wasn't to my taste.

Friendly and quick service (first day), very good food.

Our visit to this restaurant was unfortunately very disappointing. Upon arrival, I asked if they offered ice cream, which they confirmed. However, after being seated, we had to wait an unusually long time, and I had to actively ask the server for a menu. There turned out to be only one flavor – vanilla ice cream. There was no separate ice cream menu, which they could have told me when I asked at the beginning. I finally ordered a scoop of vanilla ice cream with an extra cone, which they promised, along with a tiramisu and a coffee. After a few minutes, however, another server came and informed me that the tiramisu was just being prepared and therefore unavailable. I declined an alternative dessert. The vanilla ice cream was then served about ten minutes later, but in a whiskey glass and without the promised cone. When I asked again, another server explained to me that they didn't have any cones at all. On the plus side, the ice cream and coffee were on the house as an apology. Nevertheless, the negative impressions clearly outweighed the positives: The service seemed uncoordinated and unattentive, information wasn't communicated clearly, and the wait times for simple orders were significantly too long. In addition, the restaurant overall gave an unkempt impression – by 2:30 p.m., the floor was visibly dirty, presumably from the previous evening, which didn't look very inviting. Conclusion: Overall, the visit was disappointing. Despite the friendly gesture of not charging for ice cream and coffee, the impression remains of poor service, a lack of organization, and inadequate cleanliness. For a pleasant restaurant experience, I expect significantly more attentiveness and professionalism.

The 'Alte Bank' used to be recommendable. Now, not so much. The menu selection is very limited. By the way, many of the dishes listed here in the review have long since ceased to be available! The rigatoni I ate yesterday isn't listed here at all. Neither is my companion's rump steak. Both dishes tasted "okay." Salad dishes and rigatoni are far too expensive. I also wrote to the Alte Bank a few weeks ago and reported that the quality and quantity had declined significantly. They apologized and said they were a new operator and would improve. Unfortunately, they haven't. Very unfortunate! The service was very good yesterday, though! P.S. You're only allowed to review once, but you can edit an old review. So, here's an update a few months later: The selection of dishes has improved, but the prices are definitely higher. It's good that the Alte Bank has committed to German cuisine; you hardly find that style in the city center. The service was friendly and attentive. But I think 2 salads with Maultaschen (swabian pasta), 2 small beers, and 2 coffees for 52 euros is a lot. This time we sat outside. The setting is very nice, and there were also street musicians, but the seating is very uncomfortable and looks cheap.

Whenever I'm in Karlsruhe, I come here. The service and drinks are always good. But what I particularly like is the location. It's comfortable and offers a view of the beautiful Catholic church and the surrounding buildings. I still remember exactly when the Alte Bank first opened. It was simply beautiful and appealing. Many memories from my younger years are connected to it.

But then, when the drinks were delivered, 3 of the 6 glasses were unwashed (lipstick, hair in the drink, food sauce in the glass)?! - No go! You were already gagging before you'd even finished your drink. I went back on a goodwill basis and was then served a new glass. The food on the menu was only partially available, but you could change your order to other side dishes and sauces. However, after two requests, the food arrived much later, starting between 1:00 and 1:45 minutes, and thus in stages. After the first guest had finished, the last guest's dish arrived - so no shared meal?! Then the food (photo is real, dishes and plates are from this restaurant, which anyone can verify – it's not fake). That really doesn't need any words – that's cheeky :-( We've been regulars for "years"; not since yesterday. The waitress really tried hard and apologized several times for the inconveniences, but ultimately, it wasn't her fault; she simply served what the kitchen had given her to serve. You felt sorry for her. So we then sought a conversation with the restaurant manager! A conversation, really, because the restaurant manager wasn't interested at all at first, and only after repeated requests for a consultation was he "graciously" willing to talk to us. According to the motto: The guests will be leaving soon, so I don't need to listen to this. With his abysmal excuses and behavior, long-time regular customers have truly lost their appetites, and some of us returned the food because we had lost our appetites.

First, the positives: Relaxed seating and a pleasant atmosphere, in a quiet location. Now for the negatives: Despite low occupancy, wait times for orders and subsequent drinks can sometimes be as long as 20 minutes. Furthermore, the boss gets loud and abusive toward his employees. Even when they're obviously overwhelmed with orders, this is a step over the line. The glass in the photo has been empty for 30 minutes and was actually reordered 20 minutes ago...

We were there today and, despite the limited business, had to wait a really long time for our order to be taken. Things got ridiculous on the second round: We were ignored when we tried to order something. When we finally managed to order, we asked again after 20 minutes where our three beers were, and then received them after another five minutes. I can't say exactly what went wrong. In any case, we were sitting near the edge of the drinks counter, and I saw and heard the manager yelling at his employees several times. Not recommended!

The service staff were rarely seen. We asked for the menu, but it didn't arrive. It wasn't until we asked another waiter ten minutes later that we got it. Then it took another ten minutes before we found someone to order from. Finally, we ordered dessert, and only five minutes later did we learn that the table was empty. The quality of the food was mediocre. It's a shame, because the seating is very nice.

We come here regularly when we're downtown. Nice selection of food and drinks. Courteous staff.

Very poor service: I sat at my table for over an hour, only received one drink, and never asked what I wanted. When I paid (€3.40), I gave €5 and was simply given €1 back – without asking. That's not how you treat guests.

We waited a relatively long time (over 20 minutes) for our drinks, even though the place wasn't busy. Other guests left after 15 minutes because they weren't even noticed. Unfortunately, you had to search for the truffle on the truffle pasta. When you asked, they said they were out of stock and more would arrive the next day. However, they didn't offer us any compensation or a discount; the price was far too high.

Small menu - ordered a salad, so sorry about the price, if it was something else! It consisted of 3/4 green salad - very little raw vegetables and a tomato that tasted of nothing, and that in the summer. The drinks and food came quickly! We had to wait 20 minutes for the nightstand, so we had to rush over to the theater, and as soon as we sat down, the show started. Oh yeah, and somehow no one wanted to take our money either :( We called twice, and only when we got up did someone quickly come around the corner.

The salad was absolutely delicious, and the service was very friendly. It was quite busy, but since the restaurant is located in the theater, almost all the guests went to the show afterwards.

We had breakfast there: the egg was practically swimming in oil, and the bread basket for 2(!) people consisted of only 3 rolls, and that cost €35. At least you could sit outside...

We were at the old bank at 6 pm for dinner with friends. The chamber theater started at 7:30 pm. Dinner arrived at 6:45 pm. The food was okay. As compensation for the wait, we each received a free drink and another free drink during the theater intermission. That was very accommodating.

Great ambience. The food was really very tasty. There were 50 of us and we all felt good throughout. They all tried very hard to do justice to our large group. Quite a few people ordered apple strudel, which was very tasty, but with each order the ice cream became less and the fruit decoration was saved -> that shouldn't happen, because food envy arose and that frustrated people. OLD bank in Karlsruhe. 2.2025 The Alte Bank is a restaurant with a bar and a very large beer garden right in the center of Karlsruhe. And this is in a very nice place with lots of trees that provide shade for the beer garden. There are enough parking garages and parking options. The Alte Bank is also very easy to reach by public transport. The location is modern but comfortably furnished. The large windows give you enough space to look over the square. Everything is also very well maintained. The FOOD here is very 👍🏻 good. The selection of drinks is large. The staff is very nice and attentive. There are also events here, which are very well received We'll be back...as we often do. ;-) Greetings Alexander

We had dinner in the “Alte Bank” before the theater. Unfortunately my food was cold, so the waitress took it away to warm it up. There were no spices on the tables for seasoning either. And the dessert (hot love) had too little raspberry sauce and it was already spread and not warm!! Price/performance: Prices for KA are okay, but you can still work on the performance!!

We reserved a table in advance, no table ready when we got there and only noticed our reservation when we asked. Had to sit upstairs, more a waiting area than dining area. Rather expensive for what you get. I had a Pinsa and can 100% say it was a frozen Pinsa warmed up in the oven. €16! Even the salami wasn't salami, was Sujuk.. Mushrooms looked like few days old and tasted as such. The dough was really chewy and tasted like a Dr. Oetker.. Bad... €6 for a warm beer topped off the whole experience.

This was our first time here and we were disappointed. My wife had an Alte Bank salad where the meat was fried to death. Her drink, a wine spritzer, was bland and served in an unclean glass. My pork loin was also fried to death and the mushrooms were canned. There was a high level of noise. The price-performance ratio wasn't right. The only thing we liked was the service.

Special thanks to Tamara & Finn, who simply put their heart and soul into their job and usually already know what I want to drink today if I don't even know it yet ;) And if I don't know, Ragi behind the bar is my savior. Positive things straight away, ambience and service are excellent. Very nice and courteous service. But price-performance an absolute disgrace! On Saturday, February 1st, 2025, two of us had breakfast at the Alte Bank. We chose “Beauty and the Beast” and 2 lattes for breakfast for 2 people. Drinks came quickly and the food followed after just under 10 minutes. For €34.90! we got 1 portion of scrambled eggs (3-4 eggs?), 1 tomato, 1 mozzarella, 2 small cream cheese, 2 jam, 2 butter, 1 mini yoghurt and 2 grain and 2 normal rolls. Ok, exactly what was stated on the menu, but the quantity is everything else that you would expect for this price or even for 2 people :-( Of course everything became more expensive, but even if you add up all the organic quality items, we won't come up with a price that justifies it for a long time. Sorry “Alte Bank”, we were always happy to come, but with this price-performance ratio it doesn’t make sense for us. A breakfast & 2 milk coffees for almost 45€???!!! And still hungry afterwards :-(

Unfortunately the menu has been changed and is significantly reduced compared to the menu published on the website. I ordered Wiener Schnitzel. Meat was good, which is what you would expect with veal. But what was served was more like canteen food. Breading was soft to mushy (schnitzel was probably kept warm or warmed up) lettuce leaf for decoration was really super tiny and also wilted to mushy. All in all the food was disappointing.

As a family, we had made a reservation for brunch for 6 people right on Christmas and were looking forward to cake stands with cheese, sausage, fruit, etc. As advertised on the homepage. But... You could only choose one roll with sausage or cheese or scrambled eggs. It was a complete failure, absolutely not recommended. We were really disappointed

From the outside it's a very inconspicuous restaurant that you wouldn't recognize as one if you didn't know. Inside it is very large and spacious and the theater is also included. The staff was friendly. The food was good too. Can you go there again?
