Oberhafen-Kantine in Hamburg

Visually it really looks impressive from the outside, due to the statics of the house. You can't miss the train that goes over there every 10 minutes. We were there as a group of 9 people and unfortunately a little too early, so unfortunately we had to wait 30 minutes in the rain due to lack of space. By the way, you have to walk into the next building through the rain to get to the toilets. After the waiting time, we received a less friendly welcome, sat down at the table and were all allowed to get up again straight away so that we could set the table. (9 small breakfast plates + cutlery) and we were allowed to sit down (9!) at a table that would have fit well for 5 people. Unfortunately, since we were only able to pre-order the number of people and all the dishes were delivered one after the other, if the dish wasn't for you, you could watch the others eat (self-service from the middle of the table). It was also problematic that the empty bowls and plates were not cleared away before the next dish came, even though the previous one had hardly any space on the table. The plates from which people ate were not exchanged between the “courses”, not even after the fish (including the bones)! Upon request, (only) three of us received new plates, which, by the way, were all cracked. I also know service differently, but above all more friendly. I thought the price per person was around 50€ with drinks quite reasonable, but it wasn't particularly tasty either.. so it's only recommended to have a look at it :)

Anyone who hasn't been here has a real gap in Hamburg's tourist program. The (crooked) position of the house and its eventful history in Hamburg's port history are unique. Great regional food and freshly tapped beer in a unique environment guarantee an unforgettable experience. This gem is recommended to all Hamburg residents as a rentable event location. Visit on December 19, 2024: Finally here again at lunchtime. Baked fish, roasted potatoes (instead of potato salad) with salad and tartar sauce. Plus homemade currant lemonade. The friendly service took the order quickly and after a short time there was a beautifully prepared plate in front of me. The food and drink are impeccable and unfortunately eaten up far too quickly. Nice reminiscence of the past of the Oberhafenkantine as a "coffee flap" for employees in the port: There is only one pot of coffee and no cappuccino or anything like that. Hopefully the Oberhafenkantine will remain true to its concept for a long time to come.

Almost a “must” for visitors to Hamburg! The historically last remaining “coffee flap” in the city has been restored in every detail and offers traditional North German dishes. At first you have to get used to the crooked position of the building otherwise you can get seasick.

Little shacklike canteen next to a noisy railway line. The building is a little slanting so people get pushed to a side funnily. But i really enjoyed the food here, very well made.

This building alone is worth a visit.

A historic house. A bit old. But ingenious and unique with the sloping walls. Service was super nice with a relaxed Hamburger Schnuut. There were four of us here. Luckily only reservation. Dozens had to leave. The food was extremely tasty for everyone and you can see that home cooking with good ingredients and a good cook can be extremely tasty. Gluten-free wasn't a problem either. The service lady had the same problem and was very knowledgeable. It was great - thank you.

We came here spontaneously in the late afternoon, without a reservation. The very friendly service made it possible for us to have something to eat here, despite an upcoming reservation. We then briefly “moved over” with our drinks. The Labskaus was delicious and the ambience was typically North German/Hamburgish. A nice experience at the end of our visit to the Hanseatic city. Other guests after us were turned away again because they were fully booked. Reservations are strongly recommended! A free table does not mean that there are staff available to serve it. We can only recommend the Oberhafen canteen! Thank you for the friendly service!

As a long-distance driver in the 1980s, I often spent the night on Lohseplatz and was often a guest in the canteen.

Small, crooked and crooked house and delicious food. Here you can feel the swell when you climb up the stairs or sit at the table. Lovingly prepared food, very tasty. The techno music was a bit too loud and inappropriate, otherwise it would have been even more comfortable.

Reservations make sense! And... what a great, open and hospitable team. From the telephone call for the reservation to the farewell, everything was simply unpretentiously loving and kind. I really appreciate that style. Not only is the location somehow harmonious, the food is also really delicious. The sample portions are of course cool, two of them really make a whole dish, even if you don't believe it at first glance. This means you can feast on more than one of the delicacies in one visit. By the way, the chef knows kale and it's really good 👍 Great. Thank you for your hospitality and the delicious food. We had a wonderful visit with you.

Iconic restaurant. Beautiful, original and authentic atmosphere. The food tasted very good, but the three of us had to wait some time because it was full and there was a place on the upper floor.

The building is of course extraordinary and full of history but unfortunately the food is not a highlight. The restaurant is quaint and the service is very nice!

Conclusion: Home cooking with a twist in a quirky atmosphere. The Oberhafen canteen is, literally, a small institution. The old canteen building, which has withstood many a flood, has been lovingly cared for and has not only retained its rustic atmosphere but even gained it. People like to sit here and enjoy solid home cooking with a little twist. No matter whether matjes with fried potatoes, jacket potatoes with quark or just a sandwich with beer. Everything tastes delicious and is visibly fresh and prepared with love. Vegans and vegetarians also get their money's worth. And the service is young, friendly and a bit strange. As befits the house. Since the guest room upstairs and downstairs is quite small, we recommend making a reservation (especially in the evenings). You can pay in cash or by card. The toilets can be reached via the outdoor area and a small staircase.

Rustic, modern and delicious. Nothing more can be said about it. We liked it very much.

The Oberhafen canteen is quite easy to reach. It's a short walk from Meßberg station and you can see the old brick building under a large railway bridge. The canteen almost seems to collapse under their weight, but the guest can still get to one of the narrow tables via the crooked stairs. A special kind of experience.

Small, fine restaurant with good down-to-earth cuisine and, in my opinion, definitely worth a visit. Nice service and the dog is also very welcome. We will definitely take a look again.

I happened to come across a German restaurant, and even though I went in alone without a reservation, they were kind enough to serve me. The slope of the floor and desk creates a nice atmosphere. What I didn't expect was that the lapskaus was delicious.

The portions are quite small for the price, the Labskaus was unspectacular, as were the backfish burgers. The girls and boys who work there somehow seem slightly undermotivated... but we Rhinelanders were also the wrong guests...

We had heard of this place from YouTube influences. However we were rudely turned away at the door. Not even a polite "yes you can wait for a table." All we got was "No. Full." SO the multiple train rides & walk here was for nothing.

A very special Hamburg original with premium class labskaus, crispy, asy fried fish and that rustic, morbid charm with the unreal crooked walls. Oh, just wonderful. And then a freshly tapped Mahn & Ohlerich beer from Rostock, it couldn't be better.

The food was great. Be sure to look at the canteen from the inside!!!! Reservation of a table is an advantage. When we were there it was very noisy from trucks, construction sites, etc., but that's just part of it. Everything fine.

Iconic pub with very tasty food. Crooked floors and fun atmosphere.

They saw an Indian solo traveller and immediately brought out their racial side. Didn't let me in without a prior reservation on Sunday, 1.5 hours before closing, when they were completely empty, and no way they could have been expecting more guests to fill the place before closing. And then proceeded to let at least two other white men in without a reservation as I observed from the corner. :)

A very popular restaurant in the harbor, great ambience right on the most beautiful bridge in the harbor, highly recommended.

The salad is great, no tricks with clever layering, a very colorful mixture with a great dressing and delicious walnuts. My partner's fish burher was also really good.

Unique ambience. However, you are interrupted every 5 minutes by the train running above the restaurant (part of it). The food tastes very good and is reasonably priced. The service declined as the number of guests increased. Which is surprising since this is a Hamburg tip and you should be used to there being a lot going on. All in all I can recommend it, the journey there is worth it

Be sure to eat the platter with everything "dinner"....a real treat, great service and a unique location

Very nice little restaurant. Reservation highly recommended. We still got a place, but unfortunately guests after us were sent away again. Super delicious food and great ambience. The fact that you sit directly under the train tracks and the trains pass over you is what makes it so special. As a burger fan, I decided on the hamburger and was totally thrilled. As soon as the meal is ready, you will be called with your table number and you can choose your own side dishes and take as many as you want. Including a large selection of different salads and potatoes. I'll definitely be back!!!

It has a very small menu when it comes to food. Prices aren't exactly cheap, e.g. €6 for a bratwurst with a bun. I ate the brownie with berry ragout for €5.50 and it was very tasty and the portion was ok for the price.

The place is a little far from the center, but it is completely worth it. The food was very good, and the dishes are filling, plus the place is picturesque and the waiters very friendly.

As always, a delicious, down-to-earth Hamburger meal with that special something in/at this special place. A ⭐ deduction for the really loud trains that nobody in the Oberhausen canteen can do anything about and that are simply part of it, but nevertheless they are simply loud and you should know that 😊

Funny restaurant, traditional cuisine, worth a visit 👍

We tried to stop there spontaneously this evening (2 adults, 1 child). The first employee saw and ignored us. The second person I spoke to just said harshly "no, nothing free", didn't even look at us and continued on. There was not the slightest attempt to perhaps find a possibility. Next to the restaurant there were various unlaid tables with chairs leaning against them... It gave the impression that it wasn't necessary. It's a shame because the reviews were actually quite good.

We came here because it was going to be a bizarre but tasty experience. It was neither. The waiter was rude and food was overpriced for it's quality. It tries to project a hipster cool aura as if you're lucky to have reserved but it's exclusivity is just due to it's small size. It's a garbage poser of a place. Steer clear. I would have given it one star but the concept of being slanted is rather novel. Other than that, it's only worth a photo.

We got a table without a reservation. We were served very friendly and had a delicious meal. Several reports on television about this crooked restaurant made me curious. It doesn't look particularly inviting from the outside, but it has something special. Even the rattling trains that rumble across the bridge and make noise so that you can no longer have a conversation do not detract from the experience. Also very quaint inside. We will definitely come back here.

Very nice, rustic harbor restaurant with typical heartier but very tasty Hamburg cuisine. Service is friendly, but due to its popularity, reservations are recommended as this restaurant only has limited seating and is small. It's tucked away in the old harbor a little off the beaten track - you have to know where it is - but it's an institution in Hamburg.

Unfortunately you can't give minus points here otherwise it would be -5!!! We were there on a Thursday around 5:30 p.m. and sat down at an empty table with only an empty beer glass on it - nothing else. Several waiters walked past us several times and didn't pay any attention to us. When my wife spoke to us we asked if we wanted to eat something - we said yes. Then we were asked if we had reserved. We denied this. Then the only answer came that everything was reserved - but that wasn't obvious. After another 10 minutes my wife asked again if we would be served - answer: NO. Something like this has never happened to me in my 70 years. We then left and, like the day before, ate at Eier Carl at the fish market. We eat deliciously and the service is very friendly. We can only advise against visiting the Oberhafen canteen!!!

Leider kann man hier keine Minuspunkte vergeben sonst gäbe -5!!! Wir waren an einem Donnerstag gegen 17.30 Uhr dort und haben uns an einen leeren Tisch gesetzt auf dem nur ein leeres Bierglas stand - sonst nichts. Mehrere Kellner liefen mehrmals an uns vorbei und haben uns nicht beachtet. Als meine Frau einen ansprach wurden gefragt ob wir etwas essen wollten - dies haben wir bejat. Dann wurde gefragt ob wir reserviert hätten. Dies haben wir verneint. Dann kam nur die Antwort dass alles reserviert sei - was aber nicht ersichtlich war. Nach weiteren 10 Minuten hat meine Frau nochmals gefragt ob wir jetzt mal bedient werden würden - Antwort: NEIN. So etwas ist mir in meinen 70 Jahren noch nie passiert. Wir sind dann gegangen und haben dann wie schon am Vortag am Fischmarkt bei Eier Carl gegessen. Essen wir lecker und der Service sehr freundlich. Von einem Besuch der Oberhafen-Kantine können wir nur abraten!!!

We were there again yesterday and, as always, it was a real treat. When the weather is nice, the OHK offers a great BBQ for all guests. You order the "main actor" on the plate from the super nice service staff and you can take the "sides" yourself buffet style and put them together. Everything homemade and super delicious! Regional meat...and seasonal ingredients! I even believe that this concept is unique in Hamburg and for me it is still an absolute insider tip! Every time I visit this spot makes it a great experience for me and my companion. Always something very special. I happily and with a clear conscience recommend the Oberhafenkantine to everyone! Curioso emplazamiento, bajo las vías del tren. Fuimos un domingo a comer, con muchas familias locales a nuestro alrededor. Te sientas (si no hay sitio, en la típica mesa larga alemana compartida), te toman nota y luego gritan el número de tu mesa en un buffet, donde vas a recoger tu plato y a servirte libremente las guarniciones que quieras (la Kartoffelsalat, espectacular). La comida es correcta, con especialidades locales: vale más la pena por el ambiente, en todo caso. En cuanto a los postres, muy buena la Streuselkuchen.

I found this cafe based on reviews and it was a 30-minute walk from the hotel. When I entered the restaurant, there were 5 empty tables inside and outside too. I told the waiter that I wanted to eat - he replied that everything was reserved and there were no seats. I went outside and called them on the phone and reserved a place, returned a minute later and they offered me to sit at any table. There was no answer to my question why you refused me a minute earlier. During the 40 minutes that I ate, no clients came. The food is delicious. The situation is disgusting.

Unfortunately it is a bit loud when the train rattles over the bridge. If you can ignore that, you can expect delicious food and friendly service. We recommend.

Super delicious food, my roast pork roll was so brilliant, covered in gravy, the salad was so perfect, the location is extremely correct, when I asked I found out that it will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in the near future, I think it's well deserved, I wish that All the best to the team and the store, good health, happiness and continued good business!!! Crazy place ( unique ) Crazy guests and staff, crazy good food. A must when you are in Hamburg.

Oberhafen - Canteen a visit with a lasting effect As a native of the Northern Lights with current roots in the Allgäu, I became aware of an NDR broadcast "Meyer-Burckhardt's time travel" There was an impressive report about the Oberhafen canteen and the very tasty regional cuisine was particularly highlighted. The famous round piece is just a dish, which triggers enthusiasm. Through a very harmonious conversation the innkeeper came to me - despite missing reservation - with a solution. Definitely worth a visit and the menu has it covered something to offer everyone. Thank you again for the very friendly and humorous encounter.

Food is ok. But, you better be a local German if you want good service. They don't like money unless you're from Hamburg....the main thing I noticed.

Clear menu with delicious food maybe reconsider your reservation

We ordered dinner for 9 people and paid 37 euros per person and didn't even get full, everyone got about a tablespoon full of the food, there wasn't enough for more and there wasn't any follow-up either, so the price/performance ratio was inadequate. For that much money you would have been really full elsewhere. Were there last time.

Very spartan with Formica tables like that. Maybe a little nicer out by the canal. Matjes with housewife sauce was ok, but the salad dressing had no taste at all.

This is an iconic place that I imagine primarily tourists come to - or locals on bikes who stop by but only for a beer from what I observed. The staff is very nice but I would say overworked for the number of diners. I ordered the herring housewife style which was OK. However, the cherry crumble cake was AMAZING!!!! Super delicious.I wolfed it down so fast, I forgot to take photo. I did, however, get a pic of the ashtrays on the table which are really. unique.

After many TV reports, I found the well-known inn by chance and tried it out. Beautiful historic inn with a slanted location (7%), you really feel like you're at sea. The storm surge in 1962 did a great job. Regional, delicious home-made products, medium price level, but this is due to the quality of the food. For me, it's the first time I've tried labskaus in my life. I recommend trying a portion. I enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, the food was just average and the service was pleasantly unorganized. But the ambience makes it definitely worth a visit.
