Oberhafen-Kantine in Hamburg

Everything here is just right; nothing is fake or overstated. The food is simply excellent, the service is authentically Hamburg, and you immediately feel at home. What more could you want?!?! But, without a reservation, it can be difficult to find a seat.

The Labskaus and potato soup are highly recommended, as is the homemade lemonade. The service was very pleasant and friendly!

It depends on what you're looking for. The place is quaint and literally quirky, a special restaurant. The waitresses are super friendly, and the service is fast. The burgers and fish were delicious, but we were disappointed with the iconic Labskaus – too soggy. The portions were okay overall, but on the pricier side. But it's definitely worth a visit.

Very nice staff, the burger tastes great and the salad with it is a dream. Because the house is tilted, it's strange, as if you've had too much to drink or are standing on a boat. All in all it is a small authentic restaurante.

Something different, because of the sloping position 😁 the food was brilliant, the service was friendly (typical for Hamburg) and fast. I can only recommend it.

There were strange comments from the staff during the visit. Perhaps there have been more problems with guests in the past. I don't know. All in all, the staff was friendly. The food was, as on the last visit, really delicious. Due to one of the last storm surges (no details), the house is tilted, which has a certain charm.

The atmosphere is quite calm because it is in a somewhat secluded place, but since it was highly praised in the comments, I wanted to try it and I was very pleased with this plate. However, the meat of the burger is very dry, the salad that comes with the burger diversifies the plate, and its presentation is nice, but I suggest you try the burger elsewhere :)

Was here for the first time today. Spontaneously got a table and ate some delicious Labskaus. Rarely have we experienced such nice service. Thanks so much. We'd love to come back.

Visited the Oberhafenkantine today, wanted to go here for a long time, today it worked 🙂 A cult restaurant not just because it's weird, but the cuisine and the service are special! You are warmly welcomed here, even though I was there much too early, thank you for that! I got a nice seat right by the window, the reservations are usually on the upper floor. It is very cozy inside and rustically furnished. Had a Rostostocker beer, and as a main course kale with Kassler and drilling cooked sausage with delicious mustard and fried potatoes. The taste was very 😋 Delicious! Price-performance good. The menu is quite small, but nice. Can only recommend the Oberhafenkantine! 😋

Five stars for this absolutely unique piece and one of the most rustic places in Hamburg, the leaning tower of the Oberhafenkantine. Now I don't need to go to Pisa anymore, it couldn't be nicer, more comfortable and more enjoyable. Original, original, full of stories that are worth telling... Oh, I'll stop now, otherwise I won't be able to stop raving about it. Delicious 😋!!

The Oberhafenkantine is truly a unique place and a real Hamburg original. The tiny, slightly crooked house has always fascinated me and I was finally able to see it from the inside. I always thought it was a pub, but it's actually a restaurant - and what a restaurant it is! As soon as you enter you notice that nothing is straight here. The door almost comes towards you, the walls are crooked, and the entire interior is very cramped. You sit on wooden benches, which makes the whole thing quaint and cozy, even if there is little space. Particularly exciting: There is a large bar and even a spiral staircase that leads up to another guest room. If you prefer to sit in the fresh air, there is also space on the benches outside. The menu offers typical North German home cooking – Lapskaus, kale, a type of burger and other down-to-earth dishes. The food was tasty, filling and served in large portions. It wasn't anything special, but it was solid and suited the rustic atmosphere. One small point of criticism: We wanted some bread with it, as some dishes were quite greasy. Unfortunately you had to order and pay for it separately - I would have liked that as a service. The service was OK but not outstanding. Overall, the Oberhafenkantine is a real experience and definitely worth a visit - just because of the crooked house and the rustic atmosphere!

We visited the Oberhafen canteen yesterday, it is definitely worth a visit. The little house is very crooked, which is really something special. The food (matjes and the fish burger) were very tasty, the salad, no matter what dish, was awesome. The staff is really very friendly, it would be nice if it were like that everywhere. Keep it up. We'll definitely be back.

We had our first Labskaus here! The staff are lovely, were very accommodating of our bad German and the food was amazing! The potatoes with the hamburger were phenomenal 😊 The atmosphere was cozy and friendly. Would definitely recommend! The place has character.

Reservations make sense! And... what a great, open and hospitable team. From the telephone call for the reservation to the farewell, everything was simply unpretentiously loving and kind. I really appreciate that style. Not only is the location somehow harmonious, the food is also really delicious. The sample portions are of course cool, two of them really make a whole dish, even if you don't believe it at first glance. This means you can feast on more than one of the delicacies in one visit. By the way, the chef knows kale and it's really good 👍 Great. Thank you for your hospitality and the delicious food. We had a wonderful visit with you.

It's a weird program here. We came here spontaneously and were lucky. We had herring and meatballs. Super tasty and loving service. We'd love to come back.

Unusual place near the Speicherstadt. We eat Hamburg specialties and it's very good. It's not for the service that I go to the Canteen but for the atmosphere. Come and eat Labskaus, it's the best in Hamburg. The prices are very fair.

The charm of the little house alone is worth a visit, but the food is also wonderful. We enjoyed the Oberhafen canteen dinner: everything was freshly made, large portions and a bit of all the house specialties. Tip: Be sure to reserve!

Wir waren kurz vor Weihnachten dort und haben den Tip eines Freundes ausprobiert. Die Karte ist übersichtlich und gut verständlich. Das Essen haben wir ohne lange Wartezeiten bekommen und es war super lecker, genauso wie bei meiner Oma die einzelne Gerichte ein Leben lang gekocht und weiter verbessert hat. Das ganze Lokal hat ein durch und durch durchdachtes Konzept das auf zufriedene Kunden ausgerichtet ist. Eine Freude das es so etwas noch gibt! Habe selten mit so viel Freude bezahlt.

Unique building, even the inside is inclined. Great and fresh food, lovely burger and starters. Local beer available. Staff very friendly.

Visually it really looks impressive from the outside, due to the statics of the house. You can't miss the train that goes over there every 10 minutes. We were there as a group of 9 people and unfortunately a little too early, so unfortunately we had to wait 30 minutes in the rain due to lack of space. By the way, you have to walk through the rain into the next building to get to the toilets. After the waiting time, we received a less friendly welcome, sat down at the table and were all allowed to get up again straight away so that we could set up. (9 small breakfast plates + cutlery) and we were then allowed to sit down (9!) at a table that would have fit well for 5 people. Unfortunately, since we were only able to pre-order the number of people and all the dishes were delivered one after the other, if the dish wasn't for you, you could watch the others eat (self-service from the middle of the table). It was also problematic that the empty bowls and plates were not cleared away before the next dish came, even though the previous one had hardly any space on the table. The plates from which people ate were not exchanged between the “courses”, not even after the fish (including the bones)! Upon request, (only) three of us received new plates, which, by the way, were all cracked. I also know service differently, but above all more friendly. I thought the price per person was around €50 per person with drinks was pretty reasonable, but it wasn't particularly tasty either. So it's only recommended to have a look at it :)

Anyone who hasn't been here has a real gap in Hamburg's tourist program. The (crooked) position of the house and its eventful history in Hamburg's port history are unique. Great regional food and freshly tapped beer in a unique environment guarantee an unforgettable experience. This gem is recommended to all Hamburg residents as a rentable event location. Visit on December 19, 2024: Finally here again at lunchtime. Baked fish, roasted potatoes (instead of potato salad) with salad and tartar sauce. Plus homemade currant lemonade. The friendly service took the order quickly and after a short time there was a beautifully arranged plate in front of me. The food and drink are impeccable and unfortunately eaten up far too quickly. Nice reminiscence of the Oberhafenkantine's past as a "coffee flap" for employees in the port: There is only one pot of coffee and no cappuccino or anything similar. Hopefully the Oberhafenkantine will remain true to its concept for a long time to come.

Almost a “must” for visitors to Hamburg! The historically last remaining “coffee flap” in the city has been restored in every detail and offers traditional North German dishes. At first you have to get used to the crooked position of the building otherwise you can get seasick.

Ein wirklich angenehmes Ambiente. Aber: Wir waren in der Oberhafen Galerie, alle trugen Jacken oder Mäntel. Niemand zeigte uns die Garderobe. Vorab wussten wir nicht, dass das WC nicht barrierefrei erreibar sein würde (man muss aus der Tür, treppab, um das Haus und treppauf wieder rein). Die Servicekraft zeichnete sich nicht durch Aufmerksamkeit und Freundlichkeit aus. Der Fachkräftemangel ist überall zu spüren. Man muss nicht im Gastgewerbe gelernt haben, um zuvorkommend und freundlich zu Gästen zu sein. Es gab das Oberhafen-Abendbrot. Wir fanden die Speisen sehr schmackhaft, allerdings zog sich das Ganze recht lang hin und es kam alles mit Pausen nach und nach. Das war etwas zäh. Die Weinauswahl war übersichtlich und nicht von überzeugender Qualität. Ebenfalls wussten wir nicht, dass um 23:00 Uhr geschlossen wird. Bei einer Getränkebestellung zwischen 22:00 und 22:15 Uhr erhielten wir diese Auskunft mit der Frage, ob wir das Getränk in der Zeit denn schaffen würden. Tatsächlich fühlten wir uns etwas rauskomplimentiert. Wie gesagt, ein ganz schönes Ambiente & leckere Speisen, das ganze Paket hat viel Luft nach oben in der Gestaltung eines Wohlfühlambientes.

Little shacklike canteen next to a noisy railway line. The building is a little slanting so people get pushed to a side funnily. But i really enjoyed the food here, very well made.

This building alone is worth a visit.

A historic house. A bit old. But ingenious and unique with the sloping walls. Service was super nice with a relaxed Hamburger Schnuut. There were four of us here. Luckily only reservation. Dozens had to leave. The food was extremely tasty for everyone and you can see that home cooking with good ingredients and a good cook can be extremely tasty. Gluten-free wasn't a problem either. The service lady had the same problem and was very knowledgeable. It was great - thank you.

We came here spontaneously in the late afternoon, without a reservation. The very friendly service made it possible for us to have something to eat here, despite an upcoming reservation. We then briefly “moved over” with our drinks. The Labskaus was delicious and the ambience was typically North German/Hamburgish. A nice experience at the end of our visit to the Hanseatic city. Other guests after us were turned away again because they were fully booked. Reservations are strongly recommended! A free table does not mean that there are staff available to serve it. We can only recommend the Oberhafen canteen! Thank you for the friendly service!

Small, crooked and crooked house and delicious food. Here you can feel the swell when you climb up the stairs or sit at the table. Lovingly prepared food, very tasty. The techno music was a bit too loud and inappropriate, otherwise it would have been even more comfortable.

Conclusion: Home cooking with a twist in a quirky atmosphere. The Oberhafen canteen is, literally, a small institution. The old canteen building, which has withstood many a flood, has been lovingly cared for and has not only retained its rustic atmosphere but even gained it. People like to sit here and enjoy solid home cooking with a little twist. No matter whether matjes with fried potatoes, jacket potatoes with quark or just a sandwich with beer. Everything tastes delicious and is visibly fresh and prepared with love. Vegans and vegetarians also get their money's worth. And the service is young, friendly and a bit strange. As befits the house. Since the guest room upstairs and downstairs is quite small, we recommend making a reservation (especially in the evenings). You can pay in cash or by card. The toilets can be reached via the outdoor area and a small staircase.

The Oberhafen canteen is quite easy to reach. It's a short walk from Meßberg station and you can see the old brick building under a large railway bridge. The canteen almost seems to collapse under their weight, but the guest can still get to one of the narrow tables via the crooked stairs. A special kind of experience.

I happened to come across a German restaurant, and even though I went in alone without a reservation, they were kind enough to serve me. The slope of the floor and desk creates a nice atmosphere. What I didn't expect was that the lapskaus was delicious.

A very special Hamburg original with premium class labskaus, crispy, asy fried fish and that rustic, morbid charm with the unreal crooked walls. Oh, just wonderful. And then a freshly tapped Mahn & Ohlerich beer from Rostock, it couldn't be better.

The food was great. Be sure to look at the canteen from the inside!!!! Reservation of a table is an advantage. When we were there it was very noisy from trucks, construction sites, etc., but that's just part of it. Everything fine.

They saw an Indian solo traveller and immediately brought out their racial side. Didn't let me in without a prior reservation on Sunday, 1.5 hours before closing, when they were completely empty, and no way they could have been expecting more guests to fill the place before closing. And then proceeded to let at least two other white men in without a reservation as I observed from the corner. :)

The salad is great, no tricks with clever layering, a very colorful mixture with a great dressing and delicious walnuts. My partner's fish burher was also really good.

Unique ambience. However, you are interrupted every 5 minutes by the train running above the restaurant (part of it). The food tastes very good and is reasonably priced. The service declined as the number of guests increased. Which is surprising since this is a Hamburg tip and you should be used to there being a lot going on. All in all I can recommend it, the journey there is worth it

It has a very small menu when it comes to food. Prices aren't exactly cheap, e.g. €6 for a bratwurst with a bun. I ate the brownie with berry ragout for €5.50 and it was very tasty and the portion was ok for the price.

Very nice little restaurant. Reservation highly recommended. We still got a place, but unfortunately guests after us were sent away again. Super delicious food and great ambience. The fact that you sit directly under the train tracks and the trains pass over you is what makes it so special. As a burger fan, I decided on the hamburger and was totally thrilled. As soon as the meal is ready, you will be called with your table number and you can choose your own side dishes and take as many as you want. Including a large selection of different salads and potatoes. I'll definitely be back!!!

As always, a delicious, down-to-earth Hamburger meal with that special something in/at this special place. A ⭐ deduction for the really loud trains that nobody in the Oberhausen canteen can do anything about and that are simply part of it, but nevertheless they are simply loud and you should know that 😊

We tried to stop there spontaneously this evening (2 adults, 1 child). The first employee saw and ignored us. The second person I spoke to just said harshly "no, nothing free", didn't even look at us and continued on. There was not the slightest attempt to perhaps find a possibility. Next to the restaurant there were various unlaid tables with chairs leaning against them... It gave the impression that it wasn't necessary. It's a shame because the reviews were actually quite good.
