Mr Chai-Wala in Berlin

Mr. Chai-Wala is always worth a visit. The menu is very extensive and features so many different, interesting dishes that I always have trouble deciding. The food is definitely different from most other Indian restaurants and is absolutely delicious and highly recommended. The ambiance is also appealing; I feel very comfortable there. Although the restaurant is almost always quite full, they have never turned us away, even on a spontaneous visit, and have always found a spot for us somewhere. The Chai Wala Specials with paneer is my absolute favorite dish!

One of the best. All dishes that we ordered had that authentic taste, which anyone would be craving for. Prices might seem a bit on the higher side, but that is well compensated the moment you take the first bite. The staffs are genuinely welcoming and made the experience even better. Highly recommend.

South Indian food was really well prepared and great - you should be able to order in English - a bit cool in the restaurant and the clothes smelled like the kitchen - but the Russian food is recommended

To be honest food is tasty but it's spicy even am Indian ,but if it can reduce the spice level then it's more good.Service was just okay,bit congested the place,coz they need to accommodate more people.May be summer outdoor could be better.Overall it was just okay.

My husband and I had dinner at Mr. Chaiwala Berlin on a Friday evening, and sadly, it was very negative. Despite the restaurant being nearly half empty, we were seated right next to the kitchen—probably the least inviting spot in the place. I didn’t even feel like asking for a different table because our server already seemed visibly annoyed, and I just didn’t want to add to the negativity. The overall vibe was cold and unwelcoming. No one was outright rude, but the staff seemed disconnected, almost like they were just waiting for the night to end. For a casual weekend dinner, we at least expected a bit of friendliness or warmth. The food was a mixed bag. The Chicken 65 was especially disappointing—it lacked the bold flavors and kick we associate with that dish. It came across more like a bland, watered-down version. The medu wada was okay, and the ghee dosa was the highlight of the meal—crisp and well-made. The beef fry, though made with decent meat, was overwhelmingly peppery and didn’t really offer much in terms of flavor balance. The one thing we genuinely enjoyed was the gajar ka halwa—rich, well-textured, and comforting. I know places like this might change the food a bit for the local crowd, and that’s okay. But when the food doesn’t taste right and the service feels cold, it just ruins the whole experience. Unfortunately, we walked away feeling more drained than satisfied.

We visited Mr. Chaiwala Berlin for dinner on a Friday evening and unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming. We started with the Chicken 65, which was the biggest disappointment of the night. It lacked spice, flavour, and punch—felt like a half-hearted version of what the dish should be. Medu wada was decent, and the ghee dosa was actually quite good. The beef fry was loaded with pepper but nothing beyond that—good ingredients alone don’t make a good dish; the final product needs to taste good too. On a positive note, the gajar ka halwa was surprisingly pleasant and well done. Now coming to the service—which was honestly the worst part. No one was rude, but the staff looked completely disinterested. No effort to make guests feel welcome or comfortable. It felt like we were bothering them by being there. You expect at least a warm attitude when you're spending your hard-earned money, especially on a weekend evening out. I understand the restaurant is in a location that caters to a non-Indian audience, and the food may need to be adjusted accordingly—but there's no excuse for poor service. A smile and basic hospitality cost nothing. We didn’t go in expecting perfection, just a good meal and a decent vibe to end the week. Sadly, we got neither.

The service at Mr. Chai-Wala was outstanding despite the busy Friday night rush, and all of the staff went above and beyond providing good service. They were extremely friendly and helpful, and I had a really lovely experience because of them! I have regrettably forgotten our server’s name, but I believe it started with a “J”. He was super sweet and deserves a raise 😄 Unfortunately I have to say that the food didn’t really match up to the level of service. We ordered: - Okra Fries: I always order these from Indian restaurants and was disappointed with their take on them. Not crispy and the sauce (raita) didn’t pair well with it in my opinion. - Paneer Chennai’s 65: Decent, but also didn’t feel like the raita went well with it. - Chicken Chettinad Curry: Not that tasty and the chicken was not as tender as I would’ve liked. - Mango Lassi: Delicious and a good portion size! - Parotta: I love parotta so I’m just happy whenever it’s on the menu! Decent. - Papadam: Oiler than I’ve had before. I wish they provided more sauces like chutney or pickles., however they only seem to have raita which they served with the other things that we ordered. Maybe it’s just common in more westernised Indian restaurants? Perhaps I ordered poorly and should’ve picked other dishes! A diner from another table mentioned that the lamb chops were one of the best things they’ve ever eaten, so maybe that’s one for me to try next time.

Randomly found this place and decided to give it a try, never again! Walked in without being greeted, and we were sat there for 20mins ready to order, nobody even came up to us. Decided to give them more time still nothing from their side. We indicated many times that we were ready still nothing!!!!! Walked out after that, what a waste of our time.

Good food, service is a bit slow. They appear to be understaffed. The cocktails look good although we didn't try them this time. The biryani and kothu were excellent and truly authentic. The special chicken 65 is just chicken 65 in butter chicken sauce - felt a bit lazy and underwhelming. Would definitely come back to try more dishes though.

Great food! You have to try this restaurant if you want to eat real Indian food. Special Panner 65 was a hit, so don’t miss it Dosa looked amazing and was served piping hot (5 star for Dosa) Do try Kulfi dessert. It’s truly delicious. Can’t get enough of everything in one visit. Actually a true gem for Indian food as well as service. A big shout out for all the helpers/waiters. They are very helpful and friendly. Please don’t miss it

We came Sunday evening, place was very busy, it took some time while we ordered and got the food, no complaints, just saying so people know it can take some time. I ordered the food not marked as spicy, but sauce was extra spicy on my taste, but I get it and no complaints also as I came to experience Indian food, so just saying for people who don’t tolerate spice, better ask if food is spicy, even it’s not mentioned with hot pepper 🌶️ next to it - it might be spicy. Overall atmosphere was very friendly, people working here are nice and welcoming. I enjoyed the time.

Please only come here to eat if you can tolerate spicy food. Even the dishes on the menu that are not marked with the spicy symbol leave your tongue tingling. To be on the safe side, I recommend a drink with milk to neutralize it. The price structure is also really good for small quantities of food. After all, the rice was included in the €14.40 for my mattar paneer. Unfortunately, this "basmati rice" tasted very disappointing and a few pieces of cream cheese were hidden in a lot of sauce. The three stars went to the Parotta (€5) - a South Indian multi-layered flatbread that tastes wonderful and that I have never seen on a menu anywhere else. As delicious as the smell in the restaurant was, as spices were not stingy, the rude awakening came on the street: the entire dressing room smelled intensely of curry. Jackets need to be aired out for days or washed straight away.

The dosa here is good and the service is great. However to me the price is quite a lot given the average in Berlin so has to be 4 star

Me and my friend often visit this place. Probably once every 3 weeks to try Chicken Chettinad curry with Parotta. Tastes absolutely amazing! The chicken tastes so delicious and juicy. And how can i forget the Masala chai!! <3

A must for all lovers of Indian cuisine. Many dishes also contain fish. Attention, spicy means really spicy here!!!!!

Best south indian food you can find in Berlin.

However, for Indian cuisine I choose the Amrit restaurant. This restaurant has an Indian atmosphere. The service is so-so. The food is OK. but not great. It's hard to communicate in German here. Unfortunately, I don't know English.

For those with a spicy sensitivity, even the dishes served without spices were noticeably bitter. I have eaten much better Indian food, and I don't think it deserves the score it got in terms of food taste. We ordered garlic naan and it was ice cold. I've had better mango lassi...

I’m less familiar with South Indian than the stuff coming out of the north but from what I could tell it was very good, authentic food. It didn’t blow me away but it was a nice experience. Great to find a place that doesn’t adjust the spice to the German pallet and just goes for it, too. Madhu was very good with my 1 year old while we were here.

We had dinner there last night, ordered Malli dosa in my experience of trying dosas here in Berlin this one was better as they spread coriander/mint chutney while making dosa which enhances the taste and it was good. Sambhar was ok/average and tomato, coconut chutney was also good. Vadas were oily maybe coz they fried them again and they soaked in all oil. I had to use the paper napkin to get rid of excess oil. But they had their taste and crunch also they were small in size, generally Vadas are bigger what I had mostly. Also had carrot halwa was good though almonds cashews were missing as mentioned in their menu. At last mint tea was also good. A warm glass of mint tea helps with digestion and also acts as a mouth freshner . Overall good experience but they should improve their sambhar as I couldn’t really feel the taste of spices .

I am a wolt rider. I received an order of the restaurant today evening and it was marked as ready to pickup. When I reached the venue the person in front told me to wait then I told him that the order is marked as ready. Then I waited for a few minutes. After that I asked him again for the order he told me that"you can cancel the order" and he denied to give me the order in a very rude manner. And when I viewed properly the order was there on the counter. So the owner should look after this matter on the rude behaviour of their staff to the riders. And this is not the first time he has shown this attitude. After all we are also doing our job and we also are humans. 0/10

Pretty loud and expensive for what you get, there are a ton of better alternatives in the area. Food portions are also small, so be prepared for a bigger bill than initially planned. Staff is friendly and fast though.

I think this is one of the sexiest restaurants in Berlin. Flossy decor, attentive servers in all black doing excellent service in German and English, full bar, bangin’ playlist. The food is the star, though. Proper spicy (not German-spicy) South Indian/Sri Lankan favorites. Extensive choice of things like Dosa and Tamil snacks. The tikka is properly tikka-d in the oven and the flavors and quality are absolutely standout. On a recent visit they had Paal Parotta as the weekend special and it was *unbelievable*. Krass lecker. Get there, eat it. This place is Dishoom-good.

Best indian tea so far. Food is very authentic and the menu is versatile

We were there in the early afternoon. Always nice to hear national music in a restaurant, and not too loud either. The staff is extremely friendly, the atmosphere is minimalist and modern. Very interesting menu. The lamb chops were amazing and the fish curry excellent too. So actually 5 stars. Nevertheless, I have to deduct two stars. In every Indian restaurant to this day, the classic papadum with three different sauces was served as a "greeting from the kitchen". Here two slices with just one sauce cost EUR 2.70. It’s still possible 😉. But the 13 EUR for 0.2l Riesling doesn't work at all 😮. A good wine, but if the glass costs as much as a whole bottle when shopping, I'll give up. The second star is deducted for the staff's lack of German language skills. We are in Germany or Charlottenburg (and not Mitte) and I simply expect to be able to communicate in my language. Nevertheless, I will probably come back, the food was just too good 😋!

The employees were very friendly! I ordered a mild curry and it was so spicy that I had to order more raita to put out the fire. Unfortunately, the raita tasted more like cream/mayo, so I couldn't enjoy the meal overall. And unfortunately it was very expensive...

The food, the service and the location are great 😍 the food is local and even if you order it is fresh, varied and super tasty ☺️ it is definitely worth a visit :)

Food was tasty but quantity was less

The name suggested Mr. Chai wala meaning the tea man. So i thought should be a good place to have some snacks. They did have some snacks but the variety was so less sadly. That we get to get samosas. The taste of the food we ordered was good. The tea was probably the best. But th price to fo ratio. Not that great. 15 euros per person for 1 samosa, 1 beef roll and a tea goes in the higher price point.

The food is really good. I have been coming here at least 3 times a month because of the food. The service really needs to be improved though. It has gotten worse from when it opened.

Not awful but not good. The food was mediocre (I was in between 2 and 3 stars but decided to go for 3 because it was still the best out of the experience) The restaurant looks cool from the outside but once you walk in you can see that the interior is a bit lifeless and half baked. We were seated right next to the kitchen, so we asked to sit in the back of the restaurant (where there were a lot of free spots at the time which also remained free throughout the night) and the waitress just said “no” without offering a solution nore explanation. The menu is massive and overwhelming. We got samosas, Idlis and naan as a starter which came with three sauces. As a main we had the masala-dosa, chefs special dosa and the butter chicken which all came with the same three sauces we had with the starters. Quality of the food was average at most, portions were large for the price. The wine was okay and the mango lassi probably the best thing of the whole evening. Our waitress remained cold and indifferent to us through the night. All in all not great

Food tasted overall good. Idli Vada sambhar tasted authentic and tasty. Rose and Elaichi lassi was very good. They have a lot of variety in South Indian cuisine.

Very authentic kerala and south indian rates. We ordered kothporotta and Dindigul biriyani, and kothporotta was the star, I have to say. Tasted very fresh and crispy at the right spots. Great interiors and nice service.

Great food, and finally some of the level of spiciness that i had encountered while travelling India. No wonder, as it was an Indian colleague who took me there. Will definitely visit again !

South indian ambience on point with also a bar and dosa counter. A restaurant with good space and seatings serving delicious south indian cuisine, especially Keralian. Kothhu porotta and special chai was way to good. Dindingul Biriyani was also exceptional along with Fresh lime with soda.

Unfortunately the food has little to do with Sri Lankan cuisine. Kottu way too much meat and not enough rotti. Definitely not a kottu. The staff doesn't speak German, only English and Tamil. Too bad. We are Tamil / Swiss and therefore know the cuisine very well. Unfortunately I cannot recommend it.

You think you already know Indian cuisine, then you discover Mr. Chai-Wala and realize you've been missing out on the best one so far.

Chai was very good, so matar paneer.

It was well. The seating is really nice, the interior design and cutlery are well thought out and you can get a seat quickly. It took us around 45 minutes after ordering for the food to be on the table. The staff tried very hard, but were definitely overwhelmed. It's a big place with lots of seats and I have the feeling you can't keep up. I don't know whether that's because of the kitchen or the service. My tandoori chicken was bone dry when it arrived, but the seasoning was very tasty. You could either not cook the chicken breast to death or use the leg meat. We also had a cauliflower dish that was delicious. We weren't necessarily disappointed, but we wouldn't come back.

Used to be one of my favourite Indian places in Berlin but their quality has gone down dramatically lately. The last couple of times I went there both the chicken and lamb tasted like tyres, not juicy at all. We did not even finish half of it. Everything but the meat was otherwise good.

I recently took my team to this restaurant based on recommendations from friends, and we had a great experience overall! Here's what we ordered: Starters: Medu Vadai Chicken 65 Cutlet Main Course: Kothu Paratha Chicken (the star of the show – an absolute must-try!) Chicken Chettinad Chicken Biryani (delicious and worth trying) A lamb dish (can't recall the exact name, but it was great too!) The food was excellent, and each dish was flavorful and well-prepared. The Kothu Paratha Chicken stood out as the highlight – perfectly seasoned and a real crowd-pleaser. To top it off, we ordered chai, which was freshly made and the perfect way to end the meal. One minor issue we encountered was with a chicken starter we wanted to try – the waiter kept mentioning that it would take a long time, almost discouraging us from ordering it, which was disappointing. That aside, the overall experience was fantastic, and I highly recommend this restaurant for its authentic flavors and delicious menu. Definitely worth a visit!

Honestly the most authentic Indian restaurant in Berlin. I would highly recommend the “Malabar Paratha” and their Weekly Thali options. Prices are very reasonable and portions are also good :)

As starters, we ordered Samosas and Paneer Tikka (a soft and mild cheese that beautifully absorbs flavors, marinated with spices and gently grilled with bell peppers and onions in a tandoori oven), and we enjoyed both options. For mains, we had the Original Chettinad Curry with chicken (a traditional, flavorful South Indian chicken curry) and the Butter Chicken curry, and we must say we were absolutely delighted. While we know there are plenty of great restaurants in Berlin, few offer customer service like this place; the staff was incredibly kind, friendly, and attentive—something worth highlighting. Would we recommend it? Absolutely. Would we come back? We definitely will.

Usually whenver i order biryani , it’s always with chili powder on the top mixed but this dindigul lamb biryani was top notched tasty and spicy enough to make me fall in live with it . Good ambience and experience

Went to this place after a recommendation from a close friend and the food didn't disappoint us 😉. The place is located on one of the very busy streets in Berlin. Street parking is available but you have to be lucky to get one. Public transportation is very good. It's highly recommended to reserve a place since peak hours are busy. Regarding food, we tried samosa which was average, chicken soup with naan, this was good, a very different soup flavor and addition of naan is a good idea. Chicken rolls were very good, almost authentic (90%). Butter chicken was very good and combined with laccha paratha was super. They offered 3 options with butter chicken, rice, naan or paratha, other places don't provide these options or you have to pay. Then we tried masala dosa which was good too. Gazar ka halwa was ok, could have been better. Flavors were good but it needed a bit more cooking. Next time we will try other items on the menu. Definitely a recommended place to try some Indian dishes.

I went to this restaurant for lunch with a friend. Unfortunately, the food did not completely convince us. The chicken was not tender at all, very woody almost hard to chew. We got two versions of chicken with curry sauce and both of them tasted like this. I recommend the Parotta, very good typical Indian bread. However, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the place was nice.

Neither in terms of interior design nor the choice of food is it a run-of-the-mill Indian restaurant, but something different! When the store is busy, it is quite busy. The food was delicious and plentiful, the service was friendly and quick, provided you managed to get the staff's attention. Clothes, bags and everything else you had with you will smell very strongly of the kitchen afterwards, but you can be prepared for that.

The food is okey , but they charged me 2.90 euros just for a glass of hot water . How can someone afford one glass of hot water for 2.90 euros , even the german hotels won't do . These people are exploiting the urge towards the indian food especially south indian food . It's okey to be overpriced for a tasty food . But 2.90 euro for a glass of water is ....what malayathil paranjal nineyokey daivam rekshikattey.

We were asked by one of the waiters to wait 5 minutes for a table. In the end we waited 30 minutes and still no table. So we ended up walking away. I would advise anyone to not turn up without a reservation.

Tasted authentic South Indian idly sambar + chicken biriyani 😍 tastes so good. Quantity and quality 👌🏻 Definitely will come next time.

Here you can really eat Indian food, it's not just made for tourists. Prices are very moderate, places should be reserved.

AMAZING! I love Indian cuisine and this is the first time I feel like I'm really discovering it. Spicy cuisine of course, but honest, with a wide range of different Indian dishes never before seen on Europeanized menus. Fast and quality service, very friendly. Excellent value for money. In short, perfect!

The staff was super friendly, but unfortunately we had to wait about 45min for the food. We ordered Biryani and it was dry and lukewarm and the chicken drumstick was cold. The chicken curry was also dry. All in all we‘d recommend the atmosphere. The interior is amazing and we’d come for some drinks

The food was great! Every food item we ordered was completely worth the penny spent. I went out with my friends, and had a complete blast of flavours in our mouth. We enjoyed the variety of dishes we ordered. I recommend everyone to try the cafe. Note: Visit after you have reservation the place is very well packed with customers. The service is slow due to the crowds and the continuous orders.

Have always been skeptical about biryani in Berlin. But this place does have One of the best biryani in Berlin. The chicken is well cooked, it’s Very flavourful and feels closer to home. But this place is insanely expensive for the quantity they give:(

Great food- especially the parrota, okra fries and masala dosa

I reserved a table at 8 p.m. At half past eight they said, yes, come in 5 minutes. After 40 minutes we finally had a table. At 9:15 we didn't even have drinks. Food came at 10 p.m. The waiters absolutely ignored us. Nothing happened - we had to keep reminding them that we still exist and are paying customers. Absolutely never, never, ever come here again. Endless impudence!!!!

Colorful atmosphere with music that was a bit too loud, food was tasty but quite spicy, although there was no entry for spicy on the menu for the chicken pepper pan. Friendly service, tried very hard, but only in English. Unfortunately, the paneer was all I actually wanted to try.

I loved absolutely everything about about this restaurant! Masala Dosa and salt Lassi were awesome and super delicious, service excellent, staff so friendly and lovely, and everything was very hygienic. Plus the interior is truly beautiful ❤️ I will definitely visit again! Update: Same wonderful experience few months later! Pet khush aur dil bhi khush 🥰 Keep it up!
