Mr Chai-Wala in Berlin

We ordered chicken chettinad and Idli dosa. Food was okay. We and customers from other tables were waiting almost for one hour to get the order served. I would have appreciated it if they would have informed the customers about the delay instead of keeping them waiting not knowing when the order will arrive.

Great food but a bit expensive.

Really liked the Fresh made Parotta and Chicken 65. Chicken Kothu is also a must-try. Food is most closest to South Indian cuisine. Good service and Ambience.

Overall disappointing experience and flavours. The food arrived lukewarm (we waited about 45 minutes for our dishes to arrive). Ordered the egg curry which wasn’t spicy and bland. The vegetarian kothu and parathas were ok. The texture of the masala dosa was really nice, however there was barely any filling in it. I asked for a glass of tap water at the end of my meal and it wasn’t allowed. It’s really not worth the commute if you’re coming from the other side of town.

Very disappointing service. The staff displayed a lot of attitude, and even after informing them twice that the food wasn't good and requesting a change, they completely ignored us. The food quality was also poor. Overall, a very unsatisfactory experience. Improvement is needed.

Chai and Vada was very good. But be aware of the waiting time, as it can take up to 1 hour. Quality doesn't pay off the expense.

I was racially insulted and physically attacked by another guest in this restaurant today. Instead of helping me, the staff decided to expel me from the restaurant after my lack of understanding - with the words "Sorry, stay safe". It is unbelievable that people who make statements like “You have no business in Germany” are protected, while the restaurant tolerates this and pressures me to leave the restaurant. It is particularly shocking that several men have threatened me in this way as a relatively small woman. I am speechless and angry. Absolutely not recommended. Legal action has already been taken.

It was ok… the egg curry was a bit watery, lacking flavour and not really spicy (when it was advertised as spicy and waiter recommended it). The dosa was good but not enough filling inside of it. The Kothu was good. Service was nice.

Come only for vadai and chai. Meals are not worth the price and long waiting time. Not much taste or flavour either.

As an Indian, i can totally understand the flavours of cuisine, whether they are authentic or customized according to the local city, but this GEM in Berlin is by far the best food I have had in Europe. And trust me I have had my share of Indian food across Europe. From the service, to the food, to the delivery and even ambience, it is what you call authentic Indian food. Our Server Ara was super courteous and helpful and was kind enough to answer all our questions and with a lovely smile. Highly recommend their Parotta, Black Pepper Chicken, Chicken 65 and Chicken Tikka roll with In house Lemonade. Well done Mr. Chai wala.

Everything great! 45 minutes wait but it was completely full. Food is simply delicious! Very diverse dishes and also a lot for vegetarians/vegans! Many of the dishes on the menu have spices like coriander or coconut on them, which can seem off-putting if you don't like that sort of thing, but you can't really taste it. I was skeptical at first but subsequently thrilled! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!!

Must try biryani spot in Berlin. Tried the dindigal biryani and it was simply superb. Amazing staff… Highly recommended for all indian food lovers.

Super delicious food. However, you have to wait a long time (45+ minutes). It's nice to sit outside in the summer, but inside I find it incredibly loud and, despite the beautiful furnishings, rather uncomfortable. It's almost impossible to have a conversation because the tables are so close together and it's so loud. You won't get very far here with German. Card payment possible. We are big fans of Chicken Kotthus.

First of all, they serve bellow average South Indian food. On top of that the staff behaved very arrogant and rude. I don’t want to mention the kind of worlds the staff used. They justify their behaviour saying heir boss asked them to behave this way. I assume you don’t want to pay for an average food and get treated bad. If you haven’t visited this place then don’t worry you did not miss anything. You in fact saved your self respect.

Food was good. Waiters were friendly. Book in advance. We went without booking and the place was packed. Had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table.

We were there in a large group on a Sunday evening. It was only after over an hour that a single dish was brought, and the rest of the food was only brought after another 25 minutes. Completely unacceptable for a group meal. At the same time you could see the Wolt orders leaving the restaurant... An order was completely forgotten and no apology was given and I was treated with indifference. The food tastes delicious, but the portions are on the smaller side and the price is not appropriate. You pay here mainly for the “stylish” restaurant. At the end there is loud and inappropriate electronic music.

Sadly a very disappointing experience on a Sunday evening. We used to love this place but I think this might have been our last time. We fully understand when restaurants are crowded and everything might take longer, however waiting over 1 hour for a rather sad butter chicken and a portion of dosa is too long. I think what disappointed us most was the staff though. No apologies, no care, no communication. When observing our neighboring tables, other guests were annoyed as well.

I haven't been to Chaiwalla for a year, and I have to say they've dropped off a lot, the food was unseasoned and boring, the music was unbearable, dull techno of the bad kind and so loud that we could only talk while screaming. Our request to turn down the music worked for 3 minutes, then it got loud again and we quickly fled.

Excellent service. The quality of the food is really good. Delicious food and really peaceful atmosphere. I would say it's a must try spot.

Food is good. I would recommend the Grilled mix plate. The food is bit expensive compared to other Indian restaurants, but Nandu Saar (crab soup) is not worthy for €9.00. Very friendly staff and the service is amazing.

Nice atmosphere, very clean, food delicious, service has potential for development... Were there yesterday during our lunch break around 12:30 p.m. There was only one other guest there besides us. Restaurant has a bar in the front area (where the service staff is) and a partially open kitchen in the back. After a friendly welcome, unfortunately nothing more happened. After 10 minutes at the bar I remembered that we would like to order. After another 5 minutes someone came. We then both ordered thali from the lunch menu. Drinks came relatively quickly. We took the opportunity to ask that the unbearably loud music be turned down a little, which was immediately done. We didn't see the service employee again until our food arrived around 1 p.m. The taste was very good, but unfortunately some were only lukewarm. In between, no one showed up, only to collect the money. Nobody asked whether it was tasty. We also had the impression that the kitchen staff also seemed a bit annoyed at times because the service hadn't picked up the finished food from the serving area Conclusion: Ambience very nice (++), food delicious (++), service staff only seem to stand at the counter and seem rather uninterested - a shame (--). What I also find strange is that the problem with the music being way too loud is mentioned again and again (justifiably), but the problem keeps reoccurring...

You guys Live up to the hype of the name. The flavours are just so Original and Authentic. The Service is Great. Simply the Best Indian Restaurant in Berlin. Highly Recommended ❤️‍🔥

The food is super delicious with traditional Indian flavours. The quantity for main course is enough for two people as well. We ordered Tofu Gemüse, Lamb Kothu, Hähnchen Pefferpanne and some Naan with it. On side note the menu has limited North Indian dishes and food is on expensive side (16-18€€) compared to the average price (12-15€) for dishes but they are worth giving a try atleast once.

Nice restaurant. The food tastes very tasty, everything has a certain spiciness. The staff is really friendly, only speaks English, but that's not a problem. The volume was consistently quite high due to the many guests, but that was OK. But when the music was turned up again at 8 p.m., it was almost impossible to have a conversation near the loudspeakers. We like to talk while we eat, and that was the signal for us to leave.

The food is authentic, no doubt, but needs to be amped up in flavour. Good choice for a South Indian meal, value for money. Service is really good, friendly and they provide good recommendations.

Expensive for the quantity of food served. Must try Chicken 65, Chicken curry and Chicken Biryani. Also, I genuinely feel that the Kellnerins should lose the accent. It doesn’t make sense at all. Keep it authentic, there is nothing wrong with Indian accent

Yes, it's something different! Interesting dishes from Sri Lanka, e.g. B. the bread salad. Small minus because the clothes smell like chip fat after the visit.

Just had their fried Ocra and Chicken Kothu and I’m in heaven..

I ordered from here 1 tandoori prawns and 1 chicken biryani. while biryani was ok the quantity of prawns for 22 euro was 3 piece as for the taste it wasn't something out of the world . Too pricey and not worth it. They should atleast have standard 6 pieces for price they are charging.

We came on a recommendation. Unfortunately it was far too crowded on Saturday evening and therefore extremely loud, not least because of the bass-heavy background music. The dishes were nicely presented, but the taste was rather average and, in our opinion, too expensive for the quantity. Our friends said it was nicer during the week and were very disappointed with the visit that evening itself. The staff was friendly and tried hard, but also very overwhelmed with the number of guests. Overall, we couldn't get a relaxed impression here on a Saturday evening. It's a shame actually. We also found the interior to be quite modern and attractive, although it is a bit worn in places.

Updated review Edit: Went to this place again , in August seems like the quality has gone down sadly. We had ordered pepper chicken which sadly tasted more of cumin and none of the pepper. Rest of the food was also just average. Review from April : The food here just hits all the right spot!! This place serves the best porotta I ve had in Berlin. It is light, crispy and flaky. We also had the pepper chicken , which was good and the chicken kothu : amazing again . The rose and cardamom lassi was 👌 and the lemon soda comes with khus khus reminding me of what we get in Kerala. Cant wait to come back and try new dishes

Forget everything you've experienced in terms of Indian food in Berlin: Mr. Chai Wala is the place you should go if you want to get a taste of the real thing. Appetizers, main courses, drinks, everything is delicious and perfect. The Chai is something to write home about. They have a good service and the place is on the louder side, but it doesn't ruin, the experience. On the contrary, perhaps, but that's a matter of preference. Truth is: if you love Indian food make sure you come to this place.

nach einer Reise durch Kerala bin ich Fan der südindischen Küche - und jetzt kann man an der Kantstraße authentisch südindisch essen. Es gibt sogar Kothu, wobei ich mich bei meinem Besuch für ein sehr leckeres Curry entschieden habe.

It's not a relaxing place. Ambience is too pink. Biryani does not taste good. Music is jarring and loud. I got a headache and had to step out. Better avoid

Biryani was pretty cold and the taste was not nice. It was 16 euro, it was not worth it. Mango lassi was nice, it was worth the money.

Nice place with proper typical South Indian taste

I ordered with Malabar parotha multiple times but even after calling restaurant they always send rice.

It was a biggest disappointment to visit here and it's a waste of money for 28 euros that they charged for onam festival. I do not understand why they loot people with this price and offer nothing as service. I have just served once and I had to wait for 30min with empty rice and no curry and then comes sambar and no curries added. I left the plate with such a disappointment and dissatisfaction. I highly Do Not recommend anyone to visit and try such a dissatisfaction food. Better cook at home. I do not event give 1 star as there is no 0 rating else I would have given minus O

Finally found the authenticity of Tamilian delicacies. Tbh going through the reviews made me conflicted before ordering, but the food made me settle up. In Berlin, hardly any Indian restaurants cook properly in the Indian way, it's like one creamy sauce and permutation-combination of veggies and meats. Mr. Chai-wala definitely stands out because of its authenticity. We were happy with the delivered portion. It's a bit on the expensive side than other Indian restaurants but taste buds were happy. Back after one year in the restaurant, heard their service was bad, unfortunately one has to wait, they always took more than 30 mints to deliver food on the table.

Best South Indian food in Germany I’d say. Lamb biriyani was just “Home” for real. I Usually ended up being disappointed when I ordered lamb biriyani with veggies and zero flavour of the meat around. But this one was just beautiful. The okra fries - baby corn - parata - they are so friendly to serve you “kushka - curry” if you know you know. That just humble as hell. South Indians will just come back happy

One of the few Indian restaurant with south Indian cuisine. I ate Henchen mit Kothu, It was good and tummy filling. Wait time for the food seemed little late.

Okra was outstandingly good. Biriyani was also tasty and had a good spice punch. The lamb curry and the butter chicken was dry.and the bread (naan and paratta) was doughy and became a paste after only a few chews. There was a constant noise coming from the inside of the restaurant which was super annoying. 2 people 80+euro is very very steep.

Having experienced a couple of Indian restaurants in Berlin and Germany itself, Chaiwala makes an great impression. We dropped in at 10:30 on a Saturday and had one of the best breakfasts. The stew and the kalappam were delicious and the authentic Indian tea was such a pleasure surprise. The packed lunch of Chicken Biryani and veg kottuporotta just topped it up. Jomit, thanks for the awesome service!! Keep it going, will be a definite visit for every time we are in Berlin.

The food was good as always, inside was a bit warm but rest apart everything was chill. The service of the twin sisters was great and so friendly.

It is the first Indian restaurant to serve spicy food! And very tasty! I hope that over time they don't make this really quite tasty dish milder for Europeans. The service was also very friendly. I really like going back. --- I went back there recently and the food wasn't as spicy as before. For me it was a disappointment, but I think they probably gave in to the pressure...

Nann raw, mediocre food. I have allergy problems, I ordered and the waiter came back after an hour telling me that I couldn't eat what I ordered. I changed the order and the new dish still had all the allergens. I didn't eat anything except a Dosa.

Expensive AF but without giving the customer many options to choose from. Wanted to try Appam with chicken curry but I got the info from the waiter that Appam comes in a package deal with Egg curry. I would have liked Appam as a separate item in the menu. Also 20+ euros for a curry is ridiculous

This is THE best for authentic south indian food, especially one should bot miss their Vada and chai. Lovely food lovely people, I will keep going their as long as I live in Berlin.

Food was ok but the staff seemed really uninterested

We went there spontaneously and got a place without a reservation. The service is attentive and very friendly. Our food was really tasty, if we are in Berlin and in this part of the city again, we would be happy to come back.

Food was cold by the time they served it - Appam tasted like rubber. And the waiter just ignored it when we complained. Food might be Indian, but the hospitality is definitely German :)

The menu are interesting , seems offering lot authentic dishes But to be honest, the food there are very salty , specially their crab soup - extrem salty , and the mixed grill plate was also way saltier than other Indian restaurant here in Berlin It was kinda disapointing

Unfortunately not recommended. We didn't like the food. The Butter Chicken was too tomato-heavy and too dry, the Chicken Tikka was too dry. The chili broccoli salad was okay, but also too expensive. The Nan was nothing special, but it was 5 euros. Unfortunately, for the relatively high price, the food isn't worth it at all. We were very disappointed. The service was very friendly. The atmosphere is so-so.

This is hands down one of the best Indian restaurants in Berlin. Their dindigul biryani is outstanding. The best that I had in Berlin. All dishes are extremely flavorful and doesnt leave you feeling heavy unlike the greasy fare that you get at most restaurants.
