Lalibela Restaurant - Taste of Ethiopia, Kreuzberg in Berlin

Very nice experience to have eaten something different. Payment by card possible, very nice service. Gladly again.

Our meal started with the Sambusa appetizer. These were not only extremely fresh, but also perfectly crispy. For our main course we chose Mahberawi, a large platter for four people. This consisted of a colorful mix of vegetarian and various meat dishes, served on traditional injera bread. The bread was visually reminiscent of a gray crepe and tasted pleasantly of sourdough - an exciting and interesting base for the various dishes. Unfortunately the chicken was cold, which was a bit disappointing and slightly spoiled the overall impression of the main course. The food tasted good overall, but we found the portions to be rather small for the price. All in all, the evening was okay, but we would have expected a little more for the price-performance ratio.

Tasty Ethiopian food and generous portions. Both the indoor and outdoor sitting is so charming! I ordered an extra portion for take out. Wonderful service on top of it all.

Nice food, atmosphere and stuff

First and foremost, it’s essential to clarify that you were not present during our conversation with your Eritrean staff member. At no point did we demand that she speak Amharic. She mentioned that she primarily speaks Dutch, and we accepted that. However, the manner in which we were treated made us feel unwelcome in your establishment. We did not come to your restaurant with any expectations beyond enjoying a meal and the atmosphere with our family. We were there to appreciate the experience, not to be subjected to judgment or exclusion. We understand that language barriers can occur, but the dismissive attitude we encountered was disappointing and unexpected. Your response to our concerns feels unprofessional and does not reflect the hospitality we hoped for. This version is more nuanced, expressing your feelings clearly while maintaining a respectful tone.

We recently visited Lalibela Restaurant - Taste of Ethiopia, Kreuzberg! in Berlin, hoping to enjoy some authentic Ethiopian food. However, we were met with an unwelcoming attitude from the server, which made us decide to leave before even sitting down. Although the server could speak English, Amharic she refused to speak with us in anything other than German, saying, "I only speak German. She not even try to speak Amharic In a multicultural city like Berlin, it's disappointing to encounter such a lack of hospitality. We chose to dine elsewhere where we felt more welcomed. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously to create a more inclusive environment for all guests.

Food was tasty, ambiance and service was okay, however the prices per dish are not less, while the portions were a little small especially for the price.

There were three of us visiting. For me it was the first time. Now I know, you eat together from a platter appropriate to the number of people, which is served under a warm straw hat. You can get a fork if you ask. It was unimaginable for me to eat from the same plate with two other people, so I got a singles plate with 3 different vegetables. Underneath the vegetables is a sour-tasting but soft bread that you can probably use to somehow roll up the vegetables with your fingers and put them in your mouth. The other two had chosen a plate with 10 varieties in pairs. Then I got some of that. It was all very, very tasty! I found that the description on the internet in the menu did not, in my opinion, adequately explain that you are basically eating the same dish with several people. It is helpful if you can order food and drinks in English. You sit at small tables inside, where there was just room for the 10-plate and the 1-plate. In summer, of course, you sit outside. The tables were well filled on Friday evening. After eating, you wash your fingers in the toilet if you didn't get enough napkins. There is vegetarian food or with meat. It was a great experience, great!

What should I say... Was good not the best. It's for sure quality ingredients and nice service. This one is good to try, to eat with hands and gets dirty 😉

The restaurant has very nice atmosphere. The food tasted good. I liked the sambusa it is similar to samosa back in India just it has filling of lentils. The variety of lentils served along with injera were great. This all was accompanied with salad. Overall loved it..

In the middle of Kreuzberg and yet you sit nicely “in the countryside” on the wide sidewalk. The staff is super friendly and the beautifully served food is delicious!

One of the best meals I ever had!

The food is not to everyone's taste. It tastes rather neutral and the sauces are very similar. As someone who is used to spicy food, this meal seemed rather bland to me. We had the mixed platter as a taste journey through several dishes. I thought 25 euros per person was quite a lot considering what you get for it in an Indian or Thai restaurant. The bread that came with it was very sour and looked like gray crepes. I tried it once but I wouldn't go there again. What was positive was that it was beautifully presented and there was traditional coffee on the house. Unfortunately, sitting on the sidewalk on Ohlauer Str. is very loud and the smell of marijuana accompanies you throughout the evening. But the restaurant can't do anything about it...

Went there for dinner with 4 people. The service was good and the ambience was fine. For the prices quoted, the food was absolutely subpar. 2 x starters with 2 small dumplings filled with lentils, small salad and 2 dips - 7€ each - ok 1L house wine 20€ - very sour despite the hint of honey (ok, tastes can be different) 2x Vegan Platter - The bread is also very sour (here too, tastes can vary, but for us it was absolutely inedible because it was cold, fresh is different). Lentils, kale and potatoes also only warmed to cold. - would have been reasonable at €17 if it wasn't cold. Then the cracker 2x meat dish, same dish as vegan dishes, only with 1 small drumstick, and a small spoonful of braised beef, plus an egg. Except for the lower leg, the food was also lukewarm - cold. Absolutely overpriced in terms of quality for €25. Summary: The food is very well seasoned. Unfortunately, due to the lack of temperature, a lot of it is lost. Eating with your hands is an experience you can have here. In this case, serving the dishes on bread is not possible. This makes the bread soggy and what's left is a mixed mush that you have to laboriously incorporate with your fingers - which makes a huge mess. This could be changed if the bread was served separately like at the Indian restaurant. Warm cloths to clean your hands or wet wipes afterwards would have been desirable. You can expect this service, especially when you pay €140 for 4 people.

Service is professional and polite, made me feel welcome; food is ok, not the best Ethiopian I've had in Berlin, but still worth trying if you are in the area. Vegetarian plate to share was more than enough for two people. I really like that, as per Ethiopian culture you have to use your hands to eat, also suggested by the waitress when we ordered. The place looks colourful and cheerful, nice atmosphere and music in the background. Price was appropriate. Overall not bad if you are around, but not a place I would go out of my way for.

The food is really tasty and the service is really good. However, its very over priced to be honest. We spent almost 50 euros for a lunch for two people including two small cokes. Apart from it being very expensive I highly recommend the food.

Everything was on point. Service was friendly, food tasted great but….. my friend and I got violently ill about 45 mins after the meal. Ok that happens. I tried to call the restaurant for two days to inform them that they made 2 guest violently ill 45 mins after eating at your restaurant. I called for two days bc the phone was not working, I find this unacceptable. This is was a celebration meal and mind you it wasn’t cheap. 60 for two people is a proper meal that should be an experience. Our experience was painful in hindsight. I will not be going back to this restaurant anytime soon. Again the service was wonderful, friendly and nice. You must having a functional phone.

Good food and service. Their menu is a bit limited in choices, but the combos are ideal especially if you're a bigger group. Must try is their honey wine.

Numbers 10 and 12 are very rich and tasty. Very good service and both the terrace and the interior are very pleasant.

We went with a group of 9 people, we reserved in advance but we still had to wait for sometime. Once we received the place to sit, we were sitting quite tight and there was not so much space. The food was ok, nothing special (for me was not the first time having Ethiopian food). Just wanted to try also tiramisu (maybe not the best choice in an Ethiopian restaurant) and that was not good.

The four of us shared the vegetarian and mixed meat platter (served as one large plate). We were fascinated by the different spices and flavors. The Lalibela tea was also great! We recommend.

Unfortunately, the food wasn't quite to my taste, it was all a bit "too similar" for me and the bread wasn't really my thing. But I know that the cuisine is quite authentic and the salad was really good and freshly made. The portions were plentiful and the drinks were great.

The food was mediocre, as was the service (typical Berlin). Anyone who is familiar with Ethiopian food will notice that there are better restaurants. Average taste for very, very overpriced prices. Very crowded and loud. No card payment and the bill is scribbled by hand on a small piece of paper. Very embarrassing. The two of us didn't even get full for just under 60 (!!)€. Luckily I had just enough cash with me. No need to repeat.

Loved this place! Very chill and friendly. The staff are so lovely. The food was so so tasty. I had the meat combo and my friend the vegetarian combo. We couldn’t finish because the potions were a whole lot! The desert(tiramisu) and the honey wine was 😋!

I was at lalibela a few times now and every time it's pretty much the same. Interesting food, uncommon spices. The standout thing here is the out of the ordinary way to eat it all. You eat with your hands and it works well with the supplied wrappy carb. The issue I have with this place is that the portion sizes are very small. Compared to what you pay you expect way more or somehow get more satiated. The food itself is pretty nice. And the standout thing here is the vegetables. The way stuff is prepared and how well it goes together is great. The thing that's lacking is the meat. It's sadly very simple and the beef for example is extremely chewy. The meal description does a lot of heavy lifting here. I think if you want a safe spot with solid quality you can check this out. But it's definitely not much of a berlin-y restaurant.

The ambience is ok. If you come with two people, you will be accommodated in a relatively small space in the front area. The semi-quality of the food could still be tolerated if the service was good. Don't expect a taste explosion. Or taste. No card payment, this is not signposted.

Very interesting taste direction, served quickly and rich, could use a little more salt or you should put some on the table. Otherwise very nice, loving and courteous service.

My first time trying Ethiopian food! The atmosphere was nice because it wasn't noisy, and the staff was kind enough to explain things. It's been a while since we visited, so I don't remember the name of the food we ordered, but I remember the food was delicious.

Food was good - not outstanding, but also not bad at all. Not the best Ethiopian (let alone African) cuisine has to offer, but nice for a weekend night out. No card payment possible (despite Amex / card stickers on the door).

Taste is not always the same. I didn't like it here at all. I found the bread very strange, half of the toppings were quite good (but nothing more), and the other half were really not that good. Table service was fine. I would have liked a little more explanation as it's obviously not a "normal" restaurant. Offering warm towels before such a meal would also make sense if you already eat with your fingers. There were also problems when asking for the bill and somehow you felt a little ignored. Unfortunately, I didn't find the experience that exciting, but I hope the store puts a little more heart into it and makes it a great experience. Because he has potential!

The other issue that we had is that we ordered 2 meat dish and 1 vegetarian one and they have been served in the same plate (maybe we should also have specified to have them separate). In general, I think if you share you can order less (we were 5 and we got 3 plates)

Vorweg sehr netter Service und gemütliches Ambiente. Preis- und Leistungsverhältnis ist auch gerechtfertigt. Essen war gut. Nur fand ich persönlich das Brot etwas säuerlich und der Grühnkohl könnte ein anderes Gewürz vertragen ( da waren wir uns alle einig). Hände waschen am Tisch wäre auch klasse und sollte einfach umzusetzen zu sein.

Went here for a birthday celebration. All the staff were nice. This was my first time eating Ethiopian food. Our waiter made great suggestions. We got a meat board and shirt stew which were very yummy. The waiter brought cake and sang happy birthday. Will definitely be coming back!

It was my first time trying Ethiopian Food and i loved it! Not only the flavor of the food but also all the experience around it, the way the waiters are dressed, the way they serve the food and the way they encourage you to eat with your hands, as how traditionally it is done! I really liked this place! Also I liked that they have Vegetarian and Vegan options in their Menu! We ordered the Vegetarian option and it was really good! We were three people eating from there and it was a good portion for all of us!

Great place to experience Ethiopian Injeras. The combo is a good way to try different dishes together. You can easily share one with 2 and get some additional Injeras.

Good injeera with typical sides. But the service was not pleasing. We waited very long for our order and also waited very long for some additional injeera. After waiting, our food turned cold and the waiter came just to tell us that they were out of bread ☹️

The ambiance is nice, the food prep are also good but the staff looking at you while you are eating and they stare each other that is not good at all, second, we ordered food good for 2 person and the bill came for 4 persons, but it's fine we don't want to argue. You should clarify your order before confirming it. It's my first time to eat Ethiopian food and definitely my last. I hate those staring moment(very unprofessional/doubtful) that's all.

Beautiful and very colourful interior. Interesting menu where you can learn about the language. The service was friendly and caring. The way the food is served is also extraordinary, you do not get any cutlery, but you have to eat with bread. :) The food was very tasty, but quite expensive around 17-20 euro p.p.

Great food and portions. We couldn't finish what we ordered. Portions for 1 are more like for 2pax. Tables are a little squeezy for groups larger than 5. But staff are great and the food super yummy, well prepared and quick. Beautiful presentations on huge communal eating trays, that you share with everyone at your table, eating together with your hands. Loved the experience. Drinks were good. Definitely worth a visit.

Absolutely stunning food. We got a good taste of everything as we basically asked for food for 9 people where we could get a taste of everything. Those 2 huge plates plus 2 bottles of wine and one of water resulted in 30€ per person which felt more than fair. Freshly cooked food and high quality components. We will come back :)

Von der Vorspeise , über das Hauptgericht bis hin zur Nachspeise war alles sehr gut. Die Hauptspeisenplatte mit den verschiedenen Gerichten war wirklich geschmacklich top. Alles gut gewürzt und jedes für sich sehr lecker. Auch auf meine Unverträglichkeiten (gluten/Kuhmilch) wurde ohne Probleme eingegangen. Die Atmosphäre war auch sehr angenehm, mit der entspannten Musik. Also wir kommen gern wieder.🙃

Sehr lecker...die Option aus allen Gerichten was zusammen zu stellen ist super, so kann man sich einmal durch alles durch probieren. Gewürzpallete unglaublich, jedes Gericht für sich einzigartig im Geschmack. Kann es nur Enpfehlen!

Comida from Ethiopia con mucho sabor. Probad el vino miel, está riquísimo.

Das Essen war leider enttäuschend: es wurde lauwarm serviert und war auch geschmacklich nur mittelmäßig. Insbesondere das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis passte nicht: bei Hauptgerichten für jeweils 16€ und 18€ kann man mehr erwarten. Die Bedienung war freundlich und der Service gut. Das Restaurant ist schlicht aber gemütlich eingerichtet, was eine schöne Atmosphäre erzeugt.
