A Göttingen institution! For anyone who wants to enjoy excellent and authentic Greek food, "Hellas" is a must. A restaurant that's been around this long must be doing something right! Always a pleasure!

It's been our go-to Greek restaurant in Göttingen for 46 years. The service is always friendly, and the food is absolutely impeccable in both quantity and quality. The price-performance ratio is excellent, and we not only enjoy coming here but also return again and again.

I really enjoy going to Hellas. It's small and cozy. The food is delicious. It doesn't get any better than this.

For many years, this restaurant has been my absolute favorite place for Greek food – and for good reason: The owner has been running it for over 50 years and still serves food himself. You immediately sense that this is a passionate, old-school host. Everything is freshly prepared, the kitchen makes everything from scratch – and you can taste it in every dish, whether you eat in or takeout. It's rare to find food that's just as good to take out as it is in a restaurant. At Hellas, the quality is consistently perfect, the food authentic and cooked with so much love that you almost feel like you're in Greece. The atmosphere in the restaurant is unique. For me, every visit is like a little piece of vacation, paired with genuine warmth and a personal touch that's rarely found in restaurants these days. I've been a regular customer for years and look forward to a visit every time. I highly recommend it – it couldn't be better!

Cozy little restaurant, in true Greek style, seems very family-like, old man serving delicious Greek food. Large portions.

Opened in 1973, it's showing its age accordingly. Small, somewhat dark, but the food is lovingly prepared. The prices are moderate. We enjoyed our meal; the portions were very generous. Reservations are highly recommended, as the few tables fill up quickly. The female restroom is not for overweight women; the door only opens to 45° before a wall blocks the way. The door to the cubicle (there is only one) can neither be closed nor locked. It's old, but clean. The service (the owner?) is charming, very slow and very quiet, but friendly and polite. A small dog was no problem either. All in all, an aging restaurant that we would gladly visit again when we're in Göttingen again, but only with a reservation!!! Thank you for letting us stay! We enjoyed it!

We visited this Greek restaurant for the first time last night. We really liked the overall ambiance and the cute, cozy decor. Since it's not a particularly large restaurant, it feels incredibly cozy and not at all too loud, so you could have a good, quiet conversation. Soft Greek music played in the background, which pleasantly accompanied the entire meal. The food arrived very quickly and was truly delicious! The prices are also perfectly reasonable and absolutely justified. In our opinion, it's not overpriced, especially since the portions are really large. The service was really great, and we were served very friendly and politely the entire time. The waitress was also super friendly. We had a very positive experience here and can only recommend this restaurant to everyone. It definitely lives up to its good reputation. For us, one of the best Greek restaurants we've ever visited. We would love to come back!

On the grilled platter, all the meat was dry and partially covered in tendons and gristle. The salad isn't served separately, but rather on a large plate, so you can't reach the lettuce at the bottom. We didn't get a regular receipt, just a handwritten note. No card payments possible. It's a good thing we still had so much cash.

We come as a family about once a month and have been for years. The anticipation of the delicious food lasts all day. We are always warmly welcomed in a very cozy atmosphere. The food is always delicious, and the portions leave nothing to be desired. It's become a bit of a home away from home, keep it up!!! The price/performance ratio is also absolutely top-notch.

Very nice and cozy restaurant with great food and very friendly service - we'll be back!

Unfortunately, the food was not tasty at all. I had the grill plate 2: the gyro was okay but a little bland, but edible. The souvlaki was unfortunately very dry, and the lamb absolutely tasted and smelled like a barnyard. The fries were unfortunately completely soggy on the bottom from the salad. Overall, the salad, in my opinion, had no place on the plate and should have been served in a separate bowl. The sweet wine tasted more like a liqueur. We waited over 50 minutes for our food. My friend had beef with potatoes. The meat was good, but the cheese on top was so strong and inedible that they should consider mentioning it on the menu. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone, which is a shame because it does have a cozy, rustic feel. Update: As always, the owner is at his best here (as he has in countless other rather critical reviews). Of course, I finished the food. As I said above, it wasn't tasty, but not inedible, so of course I finished it because I don't like throwing food away. I already told the restaurant that I didn't like the food. If I remember correctly, the description only mentioned sweet wine, not fortified wine. My girlfriend's cheese was piled entirely on the plate and left uneaten. So much for that. Once again, another example of how little hospitality counts in this restaurant. It's a shame, really. At first glance, a very nice restaurant, but at second glance, unfortunately, it's just a facade. Update 2: Why are they now shamelessly lying? First of all, when asked if I enjoyed it, I answered "mmm, it's okay." Secondly, they didn't ask whether the cheese should be wrapped (which would have been pointless because all the cheese was already on the plate at that point). I can take criticism very well, but insulting every reviewer to varying degrees when you don't like someone else's opinion shows an inability to accept criticism. I have never waited 50 minutes for my food at any restaurant in Göttingen, even when the place was packed. And yes, the other restaurants also prepare their food fresh. Well, whatever the case, a disappointing response, but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. All the best to you for the future.

We ate at Hellas after "our" Greek restaurant closed a few years ago. And we were thrilled. Very cozy, very friendly atmosphere, large portions that tasted fantastic at reasonable prices. Thank you (a little belatedly) for the wonderful evening. We'd love to come back.

Still a lovely restaurant with a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has declined over time, which I find very sad. I've known Hellas since around 1978 and was recently disappointed. A plate crammed with salad, fries, and, unfortunately, not-crispy gyro is hardly enjoyable. Perhaps the concept should be reconsidered and quality should be emphasized over quantity.

Today we were again at the best Greek restaurant in Göttingen. Today we had calamari rings and 2x lamb baked with cheese, super tasty, I can recommend it to everyone. Thank you very much for the friendly service 😋👍!

Today my family, my partner, his mother and I ate there for the first time and we all loved it. The food was very, very good, plentiful and tasty, the staff were very friendly, the dishes looked like little works of art and the atmosphere was fantastic and cozy. In terms of price, it was absolutely okay given the quantity and it was quick. We can only wholeheartedly recommend Hellas.

Ja, es ist klein und eng, aber urig und typisch. Zurückhaltender, aber freundlicher Service, familiäre Atmosphäre. Solide Karte mit allem, was man beim Griechen erwartet. Das Essen kam, obwohl viel los war, nach angemessener Zeit: sehr nett angerichtet, (über-) reichlich, ausgesprochen lecker und preiswert. Kein Wunder, daß es schwierig war zu reservieren: das ist ein richtig gutes griechisches Restaurant- wir kommen gerne wieder!

Super great Greek restaurant. The atmosphere is so quaint and appropriate. A must for everyone. Food is always top quality, tasty and nice and big (no savings are made here). The gyros with garlic herbs in particular are delicious. You should just make a reservation so that you can have one right away. to get space. The two operators are very nice 👌

Small family-run Greek restaurant that you rarely find anymore. The food is freshly cooked here and you don't have to fear comparison with the cuisine in Greece.

The BEST Greek restaurant I know. My grandparents have been coming here since the beginning and we still enjoy doing so when we visit Göttingen. The portions are more than generous (often almost impossible to manage). The food is incredibly tasty and has been of the usual quality ever since. Always fresh and simply fantastic in taste! Unfortunately, it's difficult to get a spot, so you definitely have to make a reservation.

I don't know why I only discovered this gem of a restaurant now?! I'm not a fan of Greek food, but friends convinced me to take them there. Now I know why the restaurant has been around for so long! The service was very charming, the restaurant was familiar, rustic and super cozy. The food was fantastic! Here we cook with love, you can taste and see it in the way everything is prepared. My favorite and best local Greek! My family has been a guest at Janni's (that's what all good guests call the innkeeper) for 50 years. A small restaurant that you should now only visit with a reservation, otherwise you have little chance of getting a seat. All dishes are freshly prepared, Janni's women have also prepared salads in a visually appetizing way - in addition to the white cabbage, orange slices, a piece of pineapple, black olives and green lettuce are always included. The portions are so big that you can hardly finish them! The gyro is always tender, large portions of finely chopped onions make it perfect. I don't know of any restaurant that prepares the fries as deliciously as in Hellas! Yes, gyros is my favorite dish. There are also many other Greek specialties that are just as great! Try it out and you'll come back to Göttingen again and again! P.S. The ouzo is included for free and the landlord is always available for a little joke.

Everything is still the same and that is the best example of the fact that it doesn't always have to be super modern because when it comes to eating, what counts is good taste 👅 and balanced spices then everything is good! 👌🏻

Yesterday we (two people) ate in Hellas for the very first time. We consciously decided not to take or post any pictures because we don't think much of it! Because of the many positive reviews, I took the risk of going to a restaurant that was completely unknown to me and was very positively surprised. The positive reviews are all true! The negatives are negligible as there are always people who are happy with nothing! It was a birthday surprise that turned out well!! I preferred to reserve in advance, which was good because many spontaneous guests unfortunately had to leave because the restaurant was full. The owner and the waiter were very nice and friendly. Despite his proud age, the owner still helps out, which we think is really good. The portions (2x gyros, fries and salad) were enormous, but above all super tasty. My better half, who is a good eater, almost admitted defeat.... I actually wanted to have the rest wrapped up, but I finished it because it was just too tasty. The best part... the fries had salt and the white cabbage salad was homemade. You don't have that everywhere anymore!! You could taste the difference straight away! The pineapple rounded off the meal very well, and of course the ouzo was a must at the end!!! 👍🏻Dear Hellas team, we will recommend you from now on and will try to visit you more often. I have never eaten Greek food better in Germany. A real gem of Greek hospitality. Hopefully Jani will preserve this piece of Greek culture for as long as possible.

A small family business that takes great care of its customers. They are extremely fond of children and treat young and old with a lot of respect and kindness. We felt very comfortable there and will be happy to come back!

I had dinner here for the first time today with my partner, my mother and his parents. It's just great here. The atmosphere is very cozy and you just feel good. The price-performance ratio is definitely right. The portions are nice and big and you'll definitely be full 😃👍 It was well attended and we even got a table without a reservation. So we would have to wait a bit for our order but that's okay. It's also understandable since it was crowded and everyone is stressed. Also another hat to the kitchen. SHORT VERSION: The taste of the food was not at all convincing; Owner reacts disrespectfully, dishonestly and personally abusively to criticism: I finally wanted to try this restaurant because of its good reputation. It hurts my heart for the sweet old gentleman who has managed this restaurant for years and still helps to serve (I suspect it used to be better), but the food was unfortunately disappointing. The ambience was great, even if the benches were a bit uncomfortable. I didn't find anything in the menu that appealed to me. No Cretan potatoes much with a cream sauce that is more typical of German schnitzel. The cheese starter was okay, as was the tzatziki, but nothing special. The bread tasted old and dry. Salad wasn't great either. The main course with pork elements did not know the word and said "pig elements" without thinking it as a joke (just read me and could have been a name of the house; my girlfriend hardly understands German BTW), fries and said Souce was disappointing. No worries, there are much better cream sauces out there! At least you get large portions, but it doesn't help if it doesn't taste good... This is my honest opinion, not meant to be funny or mean in any way!! A professional restaurant should be able to handle this. Not everyone always likes it and my friend Beef with Bifteki wasn't happy either. It's embarrassing how negative criticism is handled here and also in a disrespectful way! Addendum 10/7: After the owner once again responded to my changes to the original post in a completely inappropriate way: Yes, my friend had beef with bifteki and not lamb (I wasn't sure about that anymore) but she really didn't like it and she is just as surprised at the aggressive way in which negative feedback is dealt with here. You only have to look at the other 1 star ratings here and then you can see how a person obviously cannot deal professionally with negative reviews here and obviously even untruths and disrespectful. My friend didn't finish her plate! And I just have her for the sake of mentioning in the restaurant that I didn't like the food, it would have broken my heart if I had expressed my opinion on site, especially because she found the senior manager so sweet. She paid for us and even gave us a tip, even though we weren't happy with the food, out of pure politeness. If it were just me, I wouldn't have tipped! The reduction to 1 star refers to the way you deal with us here. I rate this as poor service and inappropriate behavior towards your customers who express their honest opinions! And you really believe your completely disproportionately pronounced house ban on a Google comment would change something that we will never come back to you ... Addendum for the next comment on October 7th. which is also untrue.: We behaved completely normally, it was a completely normal interaction in a restaurant. We have always behaved respectfully and they exaggerate them here and provide all those who only give one or 2 stars here as liars: inside. Just go on like this. You are only harming yourself. Next addendum (October 7th): If you go through their negative reviews or comments, you can clearly see that they thank the good reviews and become personally and abusive. I think they even have a completely normal 3 or 4 star rating of "...Pathetic!" commented, even though the woman didn't write anything worse. And also in the higher area over 2 stars there are comments in which they react inappropriately, possibly lying/overdoing and thus also representing people as liars.

Hellas is a small but very cozy family restaurant. We (two people) showed up spontaneously for lunch, were greeted in a very friendly manner and were seated straight away. The food was excellent, the portions were very generous. We are already looking forward to the next visit.

The three of us ate there. Reservation recommended. I've tried many Greeks but I don't understand the good reviews. We waited 20 minutes until we could order (including drinks). The preparation was okay at the time. I found the food (Gyros Zatziki and fries) neither good nor bad. Hence three stars for the food. I found the atmosphere stylish and cozy. I thought it was good for the price. Three dishes, three drinks €65 with tip. Still, I won't come back. Sorry

Wie immer perfekt. Frisch zubereitet. Heiß. Geschmacklich hervorragend. Nette, unaufdringliche Bedienung. Gyros mit Knoblauchkräutern und Lamm mit Bamjes aus dem Kochtopf...unschlagbar!

We had lunch at this restaurant yesterday with a larger group without a reservation. Two tables were quickly pushed together for us and the food was not only delicious but also ready for everyone at the same time. We would like to thank you for the delicious food. No matter whether it was schnitzel or salmon, everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The men were enthusiastic about the gyros and the salads were also very tasty. The service was very attentive and friendly. We will definitely stop by again when we are in the area. Thank you very much and big praise!!!

Small, cozy restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Due to the size, it is advisable to reserve in advance. The map is clear, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, I missed dishes with chicken, but this is manageable. I had the grill plate 1, which was very tasty and huge. As a recommendation, add tzatziki.

Lieber Janni, alles Liebe zum einundfünfzigsten Bestehen des Restaurants Hellas. Wir kommen seit Jahrzehnten in das familiär geführte Restaurant, und in dieser ganzen Zeit hatten wir noch NIE einen Grund zur Beschwerde. Das leckere Essen wird von Elli nach griechischen Traditionsrezepten immer frisch zubereitet, selbstverständlich mit original griechischen Gewürzen (und keine Gewürzmischungen, die man als Urlaubsmitbringsel mit nach Hause nimmt). Wer ein bisschen Ahnung hat, weiß, wie zeitaufwändig die ganzen Vorbereitungen für die angebotenen Speisen, die in der Speisekarte stehen, sind. Wo sind die Gäste, die noch eine Wertschätzung für die viele Arbeit haben, die dahinter steckt? Bei unseren vielen Besuchen im Restaurant Hellas haben wir immer eine gleichbleibende Qualität erleben dürfen, angefangen bei den Speisen, dem freundlichen Service und die urige Gemütlichkeit. Kultstatus! Abgesehen von den viel zu günstigen Preisen bei riesigen Portionen, gibt es hier nichts zu beanstanden. Die "Gourmets", die hier unverschämte Gästerezensionen abgeben, kann ich bei allergrößter Anstrengung nicht verstehen. Da zeigt sich, dass immer gern und viel genörgelt wird. Man fragt sich, was diese Leute wohl zu Hause essen. Wenn es Euer liebevoll geführtes griechisches Restaurant in Göttingen nicht mehr geben wird, werdet ihr nicht nur uns fehlen, sondern vielen Göttingern auch, die Euch regelmäßig besucht haben. Ich hatte deutlich mehr erwartet. Essen war normal, leider nichts besonderes. Der Service ist echt verbesserungswürdig, dort ist das Handy und Stammgäste wichtiger als andere Gäste. Ambiente ist ganz urig, aber es wirkt trotzdem alles ziemlich abgeranzt. Ich war auf Empfehlung und aufgrund der guten Rezensionen dort. Leider wars echt schlecht, schade.

Meine Freundin und ich waren am 19.12.2023 zum Mittagessen in diesem sehr rustikalen Lokal eingekehrt, ich schildere unsere Erfahrungen mal chronologisch: Wir wurden an einen Tisch geführt, unsere Bestellung (Hellas-Platte, 50 € für 2 Personen) + Getränke (2 Weizen zu je 4,50 €) wurde zügig aufgenommen. Statt der ewig ollen Pommes wünschten wir uns eine Ofenkartoffel. Diese wurde sogleich mit einem Aufpreis von 3,50 € angekündigt, bei einem 50 €-Gericht hätte man die ruhig ohne Aufpreis dazulegen können. Der Aufpreis wurde mit Mehraufwand begründet. Nach etwa 20 Minuten hatten wir unseren riesigen Fleischberg mit Salat vor uns, leider ohne irgendeine Soße. Aus Angst vor weiteren Aufpreisen haben wir nicht weiter nachgefragt, zum Glück war die Ofenkartoffel mit etwas Zaziki (meiner Ansicht nach Fertigware) angerichtet. Leider waren die Teller, welche wir zum Essen erhalten haben, jeweils an den Rändern beschädigt. Unser Wunsch nach neuem Geschirr wurde mit einem "Wirklich?" vom Kellner beantwortet, sorry aber das geht gar nicht. Einfach neue Teller her und fertig, das möchte ich nicht diskutieren. Wir sind hier schließlich in einem Restaurant und nicht in einer Kantine. dachte ich mir. Zumindest sagen mir das die Preise des Essens. Das Ambiente des Lokals ist, naja, tatsächlich mehr Kantine als Restaurant. Mein zweiter Teller war wiederum beschädigt, der Kellner war nach meinem erneuten Wechselwunsch (noch) ungehaltener und sagte deutlich genervt "Echt jetzt???". Ich SAGTE ihm dann, JA ECHT, wir haben hier ein 50 Euro-Essen bestellt und wir sind hier doch nicht in einer Kantine, dann wurde ich zur Beruhigung ermahnt...also von gutem Service hat der Kellner wohl noch nichts gehört. Das Essen selbst war solide, die Leberstücke waren etwas trocken. Den Rest haben wir uns einpacken lassen, dies war kostenfrei möglich. Selbstverständlich war am Ende nur Barzahlung möglich und die Endsumme wurde auf einen Bierblock geschrieben...von TSE-Kassen (schon seit langem Pflicht!?) hat dieses Restaurant scheinbar noch nichts gehört, und das Ende 2023 mitten in der Göttinger Innenstadt. Ein Schelm, wer dabei Böses denkt. Unter diesem Umständen finde ich es noch dreister/geiziger, die Ofenkartoffel bei einem 50 €-Gericht nicht ohne Aufpreis dazugegeben zu haben. Natürlich gab es unter diesen Umständen auch kein Trinkgeld, was mir mit passender Mimik des Kellners belohnt wurde. Der absolute Burner folgte dann heute: trotz unserer Bitte, lediglich das übriggebliebene Fleisch einzupacken. waren Olivenkerne und abgebissene Peperoni-Reste (MÜLL!) mit eingepackt. So etwas habe ich noch nie erlebt! Leider habe ich es versäumt, Fotos davon zu machen. Wie dieses Restaurant bisher eine 4,7 im Schnitt erhalten hat, ist mir schleierhaft. Meine Erwartungen waren eindeutig höher. Eigentlich wollte ich drei Sterne vergeben, aber der MÜLL in der Box hat mir den Rest gegeben. Wir werden jedenfalls nicht wiederkommen.

Riesen Portionen. Aber teilweise etwas zäh (Leber durchwachsen, Gyros trocken). Familienbetrieb, "Senior" noch fleißig dabei. Niedlich:)

Flashback in die 70er 80er Jahre...echtes Kultrestaurant mit einem guten Preis - Leistungs - Verhältnis.

Bestes griechisches Restaurant, welches ich jemals betreten habe. Sowohl vor Ort essen als auch zum Mitnehmen. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich, das Essen und ganz besonders das Fleisch und die Metaxasoße so unfassbar gut. Ich hoffe so sehr, dass sich das und die Rezepte der (ich glaube) Köchin niemals ändern. :) Ich bin absolut begeistert und alle denen ich vom Hellas erzählt habe und die es schließlich auch ausprobieren waren ebenso begeistert! Ich werde es stets weiterempfehlen und so oft es eben geht bei euch essen :) Macht weiter so!

I went here with a friend. We had an appetizer, two glasses of wine, two entrees and it only came to €38 and he even offered us uzo but we declined. The food was amazing. The service was great and the atmosphere was quiet and intimate. Next time I'm in town, I will be back.

Sehr gemütliches Restaurant mit besonderem Ambiente und hervorragendem griechischen Essen. Die Bedienung durch den Inhaber war ausgezeichnet und die Portionen riesig. Insgesamt eines der besten Restaurants in Göttingen. Gerne wieder.

Kleines Restaurant mit großen Portionen. Immer sehr gute Qualität. Die können nicht nur Gyros, auch andere Gerichte machen sich gut! Familienbetrieb, nett und freundlich.

Gyros nach Zigeunerart mit Pommes und Salat für 13,00 Euro, kann man nichts sagen. Portion hat sogar noch für den nächsten Tag gereicht. Salat war sehr bunt und außergewöhnlich angerichtet. Leider wurde beim Gyros /Pommes nicht mit Salz gespart, sonst hätte es einen Stern mehr gegeben.
