We were there with a large group and had booked well in advance. The service was friendly and competent. The food we ordered was prepared incredibly quickly. We didn't have to wait long at all. Taste-wise, we found it rather bland and added quite a bit of seasoning. There was a relatively large selection of vegetarian dishes, which I thought was great.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience with excellent value for money! Firstly, it's particularly noteworthy that the restaurant places great emphasis on regional products, sustainability, and high-quality meat, and that it masterfully combines tradition and modernity. Secondly, we were thrilled with the incredibly diverse selection of creative and delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes. The vegetarian meatloaf, for example, served with mushroom ragout and homemade spaetzle, was every bit as good as a traditional meat dish. A huge compliment is due for this, as in traditional restaurants, one often gets the impression that vegetarian or vegan options are offered almost as an afterthought and are therefore rather uninspired. In this case, however, the selection was so extensive and promising that we would have loved to try several dishes.

Luckily, we managed to snag a table on Saturday evening. It seems you're better off booking in advance in Münster anyway, otherwise you'll end up hungry at a kebab shop. The atmosphere is a modern yet rustic charm. The young staff do a fantastic job with the service – always friendly and attentive. The menu is very extensive; we had a hard time deciding. I ended up treating myself to the venison goulash with Spätzle and red cabbage. An absolutely divine dish.

Everything was excellent. The vegetarian dishes and the non-alcoholic drinks for toasting, such as gin and tonic or Aperol Spritz, were particularly impressive. The service was friendly, attentive, and quick. A place for special occasions.

We had a real Viennese schnitsel again (no frozen junk), absolutely fantastic with delicious fried potatoes! The service was good, the accommodation upstairs was a chic, classic Austrian restaurant.

A long-established guesthouse in the heart of Münster. While not Michelin-starred cuisine, the food is high-quality and delicious. The bar and dining room on the ground floor have preserved the charm of a bygone era. The staff were very helpful, efficient, and pleasant to deal with.

A large restaurant where we were seated upstairs on the first floor in an old-fashioned ballroom. The waiter wasn't particularly enthusiastic, but oh well. The food was fine, not fantastic, but just okay. The Christmas market crowds will probably keep everyone busy.

It's unfortunately very crowded there. The atmosphere would be nice if it weren't so packed and noisy. The staff are friendly and try their best, but with so many guests, there's a very long wait of 30 minutes just to have your drink order taken. The drinks and food then arrive relatively quickly. The food is okay, but nothing more. I think it's simply too crowded. In short: this isn't a place you need to go if you're in Münster.

I visited Münster again after a long time. I tried the house classic – crispy Kiepenkerl schnitzel with fried potatoes and a fried egg. Unfortunately, the schnitzel was fried in rancid fat and didn't taste good. The fried potatoes were prepared carelessly, completely without bacon and with very few onions. The fried egg was apparently made with small eggs, and there was no salad garnish or parsley, etc. – also very uninspired. The portion size was nowhere near worth the price of €22.50. I really didn't expect such a tiny "pensioner's portion" there. "Tourist rip-off," a restaurant critic would probably call it. I've had much better and significantly better meals in other larger cities for less money. The quality and quantity didn't match up for a "house classic," I expected considerably more. I was annoyed about the visit.

We had a meal here yesterday, on November 25, 2025. We sat on the second floor by the window. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and clean. The staff provided good service and were very cheerful. The staff member who served us was Harry, and he took great care of us. And for the taste of the food, including the desserts, everything was delicious and tasted excellent. We highly recommend this restaurant.

A cult venue in Münster. A visit is a must.

We had lunch here as a group of four. Perfect service, delicious and freshly cooked food. There are several vegetarian/vegan dishes, even a vegan dessert – very tasty!

Unfortunately, our visit was a complete disappointment. The service was abysmal. We waited over 30 minutes for drinks. We had to get the menu ourselves, as we were initially completely ignored. The food was carelessly slapped onto the plates. It was also incredibly stuffy and hot, yet no one opened a single window. Given the prices and the restaurant's own claims, one would expect significantly more.

The Töttchen (a type of meat stew) and the kale stew were first-class...

I reserved a table at the Großer Kiepenkerl on Saturday, November 15th, to celebrate my birthday with my partner. It was extremely busy, and despite the crowds, the staff were incredibly attentive and dedicated to making us—and all the other guests—as happy as possible. After our initial table reservation unfortunately fell through, they kindly found us a wonderful alternative spot near the entrance, close to the bar, complete with birthday placemats. We were truly impressed by the service—very friendly and organized despite the hustle and bustle. The clientele was diverse, and everyone was treated equally and with courtesy. The food exceeded our expectations, and I can wholeheartedly recommend the Großer Kiepenkerl, despite any minor criticisms. My visit made my birthday a truly special experience, and I thank all the staff in the front of house and kitchen for making it such a memorable occasion! We will definitely be back—thank you so much! <3

The schnitzel was good, but unfortunately not very good. A salad with the schnitzel would have been nice. Unfortunately, this isn't listed together on the menu. A slightly thinner schnitzel and a firmer breading would be good. Great restaurant with a lovely atmosphere. The service is attentive.

We've been here several times! It's a great restaurant with typical regional dishes. This time we had schnitzel – the meat was incredibly tender! The quality of the food is excellent! The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Dogs are also very welcome!

A beautiful first floor! Service, food, and ambiance were also superb. Unfortunately, it was far too hot and stuffy there (in winter).

I ordered roast goose for 35 euros; I thought I was getting canteen food. They're not only cutting corners on quantity but also on quality. That's really outrageous, and it's no longer enjoyable.

Probably the only restaurant in Münster with a separate gluten-free menu. That's fantastic. I would recommend filing the gluten-free menu pages in the folder just like the regular ones, instead of just handing the stapled sheets to the customer (it looks more uniform). I've been to the large Kiepenkerl restaurant twice for dinner and once for lunch, and unfortunately, I had stomach problems after ordering three dishes. 1) Roast beef from Charolais cattle (09/2024) 2) Bremen herring salad (02/2025) 3) Potato soup with minced pork, roast beef with boiled potatoes, market vegetables, truffle butter (11/2025) At first, I thought I couldn't tolerate the cold dishes, but since my celiac disease diagnosis, I've visited many restaurants that offer gluten-free options, so I suspect it was due to cross-contamination. It's a real shame that I won't dare to do it a fourth time.

If you're looking for local and typical regional cuisine, this is the place for you. Töttchen (a type of stew) – delicious – and broad beans – my goodness, heavy, but good. The only thing to consider is whether it really has to be Detmolder beer...

Let me start with the food. I had the paprika schnitzel and was disappointed. The combination with the peppercorns wasn't really to my taste. However, the service was very good and attentive.

Hopefully there's a spot available; we were able to sit outside, which was perfectly manageable. The food was delicious. Definitely recommended.

We received a very warm and friendly welcome during our spontaneous visit, without a reservation. After a short wait, the three of us found a nice seat. The waiters were all very friendly, without exception, and we had the opportunity for a chat or two and a bit of banter. The menu, featuring classic Westphalian cuisine (but not only), offers a wide selection. The quality of the food is very good, and the portion sizes are just right. Bottom line: price-performance-quality-service 👍🏼👍🏼

A restaurant that I always enjoy visiting when I visit Münster.

I was truly disappointed with today's visit. We ordered around 1:45 PM, and drinks and appetizers arrived quickly. Then, however, nothing for half an hour. The surrounding tables received their food even though they arrived after us. When we inquired, we were told our food would arrive soon. 20 minutes later, by then after 2:30 PM, we still hadn't had any food. When we inquired, we were told that we had only had an appetizer and it was busy. Our neighbors, who had the same appetizer, had finished their main courses and paid in the meantime... After further inquiries, our food finally arrived, almost an hour and a quarter after ordering – it was just after 3:00 PM. The entire time, we were only given information upon request, and we were constantly fobbed off. For a restaurant with this price level, that's truly abysmal. I would have expected them to inform us in a timely manner and give us the option to cancel the meal. At this point, I'm always annoyed that I silently endure such things instead of complaining loudly. Then there probably would have been a solution. So I can't recommend anyone eat here.

The hotel recommended trying the restaurant, and it was fantastic. The food was excellent and the value for money was more than good. My only minor criticism is that at first, every waiter seems to rush at you, even though you've only had the menu for a minute. Then you sit there, completely ignored, and not asked for dessert or another drink. It's a shame, but it's still highly recommended.

While you do wait a bit longer for your food here, it's delicious. The spaetzle, for example, is homemade. The waiters were very busy that day, but everyone was still very friendly and cheerful. We'd love to come back when we're in Münster again—but only with a reservation :-)

We were served quickly despite it being busy; the staff were friendly and cheerful. The food was absolutely delicious, and there were eight options for vegans, too. The snietzel wasn't tough, and the potatoes were nicely seasoned. Highly recommended; it's a bit more expensive than "normal," but it was definitely worth it.

The food and atmosphere were nice. The food was delicious. The pasta we ordered for the kids was good. Overall, we liked it. The atmosphere outside is different, but the inside is beautiful. The children's menu has been carefully prepared and well thought out. The restrooms are clean. There's a babysitting unit. The daily special is expensive (€25), but otherwise, it's good.

The taste was very good. Unfortunately, one of the dishes wasn't quite hot, but that didn't detract from the taste. As an apology, we were given two hot drinks on the house.

A historic inn that unfortunately resembles a traditional dining room. It lacked a cozy atmosphere. Very friendly service. The selection of specialties is extensive. Unfortunately, the homemade curry sauce tasted of nothing.

Absolutely terrible experience. We were sitting there for 15 minutes and nobody even asked what we would like to drink — not a single waiter came by! But unbelievably, they did come over to ask us to change tables. Instead of welcoming guests, they make you feel like you’re in the way. Totally unprofessional and disrespectful. Never coming back.

The food here at Kiepenkerl is delicious. The staff is also super friendly. The ambiance at Kiepenkerl is equally good. Otherwise, we go to the Italian star Trattoria Il Gusto Nero in Greven. The owner of Trattoria Il Gusto Nero seems to have good contacts with celebrities. We've seen some very familiar faces from TV on Il Gusto Nero several times now.

Great food in a lovely restaurant. To round off a workweek, I treated myself to a rump steak with a side dish. The steak was a good size, and the desired degree of doneness (medium rare) was perfectly achieved(!). The salad I ordered with it was also really good. To finish off, I had an apricot schnapps from an oak barrel. This was also absolutely fantastic. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely be back!

Very good cuisine, excellent seasonal dishes. The dishes were impressive thanks to the well-balanced spices, which particularly enhanced the flavor of pumpkin, for example. The restaurant is large, and when it's a bit busy and guests arrive without reservations, the waiters are happy to quickly clear a previously occupied table and offer it to the waiting guests. Very nice, something you don't see very often these days. The staff are also very friendly to the guests. I can therefore highly recommend this restaurant.

"Tradition yes – enthusiasm no" The Große Kiepenkerl is a well-known institution in Münster and has been very positively reviewed on Google with around 4.5 stars from thousands of guests. Many praise the central location, the large outdoor terrace, and the generous portions. The slow-food concept with regional ingredients, sustainability, and organic quality is also undoubtedly a strong plus and sets the restaurant apart from many other restaurants. My personal experience, however, is more nuanced: Ambience: The outdoor seating is lovely, right in the center. Inside, however, it seems rather cold, hall-like in size, relatively loud, and old-fashioned to my taste – more of an 80s atmosphere than a cozy Münster. Service: Very inconsistent. Sometimes attentive and friendly, sometimes rather below average. There's no consistently reliable standard. Food: Solid, large portions, filling – but no "wow" moment in terms of taste. I miss a bit more refinement and subtlety beyond pure heartiness. Conclusion: A piece of Münster tradition with honest, down-to-earth cuisine. A highlight for many guests, but for me, it only deserves three stars overall – solid, but neither the ambiance, nor the cuisine, nor the service really impressed me. Kleiner Kiepenkerl or Altes Gasthaus Leve are easily the better choice for me.
