Gosch (Sylter Fischkutter) in Düsseldorf

Poor service at the food counter today: at least three times I heard the words "We don't have that," even though it was advertised on the menu. Card payments weren't accepted. I had the impression that the manager, Frank Engels, was lacking supervision.

"Cash only"...at Gosch in Düsseldorf, and that's it for me. It would be understandable at a kebab or pizza place, but not at Gosch. This "cash only" mentality really gets on my nerves, especially at a time when many establishments no longer accept cash payments. It's well known why you can only pay with cash, so I no longer support such behavior.

If you're vacationing on Timmendorfer Strand, you should definitely visit Gosch. Eating and drinking in a beach chair is always a pleasure.

Great location right on the banks of the Rhine. Drinks are served. You have to get your own food. Great view over the Rhine toward Oberkassel.

The worst fried potatoes we've ever eaten. Greasy, soggy, and tasteless. Please don't order them!!

It's getting easier and easier to have just two onion rings on a fish sandwich, no salad, nothing. Fish is okay. Fried fish is also just a better, larger fish stick.

An incredibly unfriendly waiter! I've never experienced anything like that before. I don't need to be yelled at. It wasn't even that busy, and it was still early in the evening. I definitely won't support something like that. The manager wasn't available either—why, that didn't surprise me. We're from Düsseldorf. We left and won't be back. Shame on you!

I was at the restaurant in List! The food was great! I had the same thing in Düsseldorf! I wasn't satisfied!

I know Gosch throughout Germany and always eat the shrimp. However, what I was served yesterday was unworthy of a Gosch! Shrimp in a small bowl, the sauce slapped on top, and a slice of baguette pressed into the sauce. I'm used to shrimp being served on a plate with a small salad garnish, sauce, and baguette next to it. The chef, who was also taking orders at his station, couldn't or wouldn't answer my question about a large portion, so I ended up getting two of these bowls. The shrimp didn't taste good either. Not at all charred, more like boiled. The outside of the shrimp bowl reminded me of fries with mayo to go! 2 points because the portion size was reasonable for the price. Otherwise: Never again shrimp at Gosch in Düsseldorf!

We know many Gosch restaurants in Northern Germany; our visit here was only average. The employee at the ordering counter seriously claimed he didn't have any change in coins (you can't pay by card at all)... so you can also try to get a tip... but when he finally received the exact amount without a tip, the friendliness disappeared completely. It was a Thursday, around 2:00 p.m., with about 70 people in the restaurant. The two waiters, who you pay for drinks at the table, had plenty of change... and even received a decent tip from us. The seating and the rest of the ambiance were below average, which is different from what we've seen on the coast. The food wasn't great, but it was good. Gosch always offers good value for money.

Gosch – Düsseldorf, Kasematten: Prices have risen significantly compared to last year, with the exception of wine (moderate). Charging €6.50 for a 0.5 pint of beer is almost comparable to the Oktoberfest in Munich. Comfortable seating on the worn-out high chairs isn't exactly the case. Food: The pollock with potato salad wasn't a hit, but the herring with fried potatoes was delicious. Service: If a waiter is more concerned with his (allowed) break than with the guests, that's a no-go for me. The staff can coordinate and find a replacement, but leaving a guest to "die of thirst" at their table for 20 minutes doesn't exactly speak of attentiveness. Conclusion: Gosch might be better off back by the sea, but probably not in the Kasematten.

Gosh...where did it all go wrong?! It used to be always packed, but now the shop looks like a poorly run franchise. Everything seems a bit dirty. Sauce pots (sauces with skin...delicious) are placed on the grill on the counter. Signs, deep fryer, plancha, everything looks unclean. The service was also awful. The employees all seemed extremely unmotivated and very unfriendly. You can also only pay in cash. Unusual these days and doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the shop. This isn't mentioned, which leads to a sudden rush for every second customer, as they only receive the information after ordering. We were there this afternoon in perfect weather (26 degrees Celsius and sunshine). Unlike all the other shops on the promenade, the shop was only a quarter full at most. No surprise, given the impression.

Delicious fish! A restaurant right on the Rhine – brings a holiday feeling! Unfortunately, the super delicious mustard sauce is no longer available – it was the highlight of any fish dish!

A very disappointing experience at Gosch. And that despite a great location and delicious fish sandwiches. The staff behind the counter greets you with wide-eyed indignation. And the rhetorical question of whether you can pay by card was actually answered in the negative. Perhaps opinions are still divided on this point. For me, that's an absolute no-go in a restaurant (or snack bar?). In the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, right in the city center, directly on the Rhine, conditions are reminiscent of the 80s. Good night.

The place is a prime example of the German service desert! Food cannot be ordered at the table; instead, you have to order at the counter—like at a chip shop—and wait there until your order is prepared and then served over the counter. Payment (attention!): cash only! When I asked if this was a joke (fish platter for two people = €140), I was told: "Do I look like I'm joking? The ATM is right there, so you can get money from there!" Drinks, however, can be ordered at the table and are brought to you (also cash only). Unfortunately, the service staff is inattentive; empty glasses and plates are not cleared away, and reorders or payment are only possible after constant waving. The food quality is okay, but the prices are exorbitant. The ambiance, right on the banks of the Rhine, is actually very nice, but it loses points because you sit (mostly) at simple beer tables without backrests. There are other options (and they would be more comfortable)! But it may not be wanted at all.

WE WERE HARASSED BY THE SECURITY Me and 2other friends sat on table and ate fish plate and drank beer. As soon as the meal was over waiter took the plates and told us that we have to leave if there is no order. Bad attitude but understandable as it was crowded. Told him yeah we are leaving when my friend comes back from toilet (and took the last sip of my beer). After he left, the security guy came and hold me from my arm and throw us away. I told the security we were already leaving and there is no need to get physical and he shouted OUT and no one else even bat an eye. Very poor service If you wanna enjoy yourself don’t even bother

Unfortunately the food wasn't that great and the price/performance ratio wasn't right. At €8.50, water was more expensive than two small Cokes.

Simply a disaster. Fried fish with potatoes was awful. We haven't had such a bad meal in a long time. It was nothing. The food was as bad as the unmotivated staff. The salmon sandwich to go for €4.80 was just embarrassing; we couldn't find the salmon in the sandwich. This had nothing to do with Gosch; we're used to it differently.

Extremely arrogant staff, incredibly unpleasant and impatient. Party music way too loud. A real Ballermann atmosphere. Nothing to do with Gosch on Sylt.

Unfortunately, it was very shabby. All of our glasses were dirty. When we complained, the beer was simply poured from the dirty old glass into a new, less dirty glass, and the waitress became very rude and immediately wanted to take our money. Very rude and impolite. We're definitely not coming back here!

Very bad food and incredibly unfriendly service

My partner and I weren't enjoying our meal and were mediocre. The entire restaurant seemed dirty, dated, and very unkempt. The highlight of our meal was when, after our meal, a chef opened a container of food (sauce) with his teeth, within sight of the stovetop, and used it to cook. He then scraped sauce from a container with his finger and licked it clean. He simply continued cooking without washing his hands. The overall hygiene in the kitchen and floor areas left a lot to be desired. The glass panes and frames throughout the outdoor area were completely dirty and sticky. The menus were sticky and had numerous grease stains; simply unhygienic. This restaurant has nothing in common with the standards and appearance of other Gosch branches on the coast, what a disappointment.

The food is just okay. The wait staff demands tip (not customary here) or you'll get poor attitude. Typical for "cash only" crookery.

The food is delicious and the ambiance is okay. The only question is why service staff in Düsseldorf are increasingly adopting the unfriendliness of the waitresses from the old town.

Compared to other Gosch restaurants, this is the worst place in the world; the prices are too high for a beer-bar atmosphere. The food was a resounding success in the restroom afterward. We won't eat here again. I expect a consistent ambiance and food quality from a "chain" of Gosch restaurants.

As always, excellent fish and good wine at reasonable prices. A bit hot when the sun beats down on the awning. But that's more of a luxury problem. The service was super friendly and good. They provided us with plenty of ice cream to cool us off. We'll be back.

Well, please don't expect too much. A better chip shop with fish. Payment is only possible in cash.

Truly outrageous. The large portion of shrimp is a small portion on Norderney and Cuxhaven. 17 euros for a small plate. It doesn't look cozy either. It's gotten much worse. You get the feeling the guests will come anyway. Thanks to the location. Whether they try hard or not, the guests will still come. Never again Düsseldorf Gosch.

So, pretty run-of-the-mill food, potato salad tastes like it came from a bucket, fried fish looks like it came from Iglo. And then only cash, why???? Well, I would have expected a lot more from Gosch.

Too loud, it smelled like an outhouse, they didn't know their own menu, and they served us something different than what we ordered. I won't go there anymore because it looked a bit rancid. The fish was good, the asparagus was almost raw, though not green but white, and the risotto came in the form of potatoes. I'd rather go somewhere else.

Unfortunately, it's self-service. The food was okay, though the salad could be better. The waiter was very friendly, the location was great. Unfortunately, the wine was mediocre.

The fish plate for 26 euros was not of the usual Gosch quality and suddenly a DJ started playing, making it difficult to have a conversation at the table.

Gosch isn't what it used to be... we sat outside. Wonderful weather! Unfortunately, the stools and tables at the front are a bit cramped. On one side, you can't really fit your legs under the table. Oh well. Then I stumbled over the prices... well, everything has gotten more expensive, and that's just Gosch. The food was okay, but nothing special. Unfortunately, you have to keep in mind that, despite the high prices, you have to order your food yourself and then pick it up!! Drinks are also much more expensive and nothing special... whatever. The waitress did a good job, and when we realized they only accept cash and we didn't have enough cash, she offered us her PayPal account. So, somehow, things weren't going smoothly. I'll probably get a fish sandwich there at most, but that's it.

Lovely outdoor seating, where you order at the bar and pick up the food when it is ready. Unbelievable that you can still only pay in cash. Also, I got an awful lot of bones in my fish.

If you want to eat and drink ok, but don't want to be treated unfriendly by the staff and you can only pay in cash, you've come to the right place. My friends were treated condescendingly from the start. The food was carelessly slapped onto the table. When the shift changed, we were rudely and rudely asked to pay. The reaction to the drawn card was emphatic, almost irritable. Of course there was no usual 15% tip for us. Gastro is better!

We had a very nice evening here on the Tuesday after Easter with the best weather. The service was great and the drinks were delicious. The prices are okay 👍🏼

Unfortunately I can only confirm the other impressions here. It's actually an absolute disgrace, it's not noted or pointed out anywhere that you can't pay by card, then it would be ok. The “Coca-Cola” tasted very sweet, probably made with syrup. Service was friendly at first, then the waiter suddenly appeared at the table and demanded that we pay for our drinks (we still had enough cash for them). No one asked if we would like another drink. There was no change either, further impudence! We then went somewhere else. Never again!

The "fried fish in a roll" was an oversized fish stick with a thin roll from yesterday, and it wasn't even warmed up. The fried fish is better at every fair.

The focus is clearly on the fish, and it is impressive in its freshness: the crayfish were tender, the fish was cooked to perfection and tasted like the sea, not like the freezer. We particularly recommend the fresh fish and herring rolls - simple, just right for a little maritime treat in between. Unfortunately the fish soup was too salty, which spoiled the first impression a bit. It's a shame, because it could have been the start of a successful fish menu. Anyone looking for uncomplicated fish cuisine in a relaxed, almost North German atmosphere is still in good hands here - ideally with sunglasses, humor and a desire for a glass of white wine or a cold beer.

Drink something with a view - okay. However, the Aperol didn't taste good. The food is a disaster! By far the worst Wiener Schnitzel I have ever eaten.

Well placed on the Rhine promenade. Nice to be there and enjoy the delicious food. Service was good, always there when needed. Quality of the food was very good, tasty. I'm going there again.

The service is terrible, I haven't seen anything like that in a long time. There were no non-alcoholic drinks on the menu. I ate at Gosch – the food was okay, but not outstanding. The quality was decent, but for the price, I would have expected a bit more. The fish was fresh, but nothing special in terms of taste. The service was friendly, but a bit inattentive. The atmosphere is relaxed and maritime, which fits well. Overall, a solid visit, but not a real highlight.

I remember Gosch from the days when he was still selling from a converted caravan. It's always a pleasure, just like back then, in a small way, now in a large one. Jürgen, you can do it!!!

I tried the noble fish soup today. No more. Beans and carrots. Three pieces of fish. Also lukewarm. Sorry, I know a different quality from Sylt. It tastes better in every North Sea restaurant.

To be honest - the atmosphere makes the food better than it is.

We really liked it and were thrilled by the delicious food (fresh oysters and Gosch plate with very tender herring) at reasonable prices. Where can you get a glass of wine for a fair €5.80 and a fish sandwich for €4 - with a view of the Rhine in a holiday atmosphere, great and thank you, we'll be back! It's very practical that you can pick up your food yourself and have a view of the fish counter, you can get drinks yourself or order them from the friendly staff, ideal!

Absolutely not recommended! Although only averagely visited, we waited over half an hour for drinks. You can only order if you follow the waiters. We will definitely not be coming back again.

By far the worst fried fish I've eaten in a long time. Breading a disaster, shaped fish, not well fried, tastes like nothing and it's best to take the tartar sauce yourself from the supermarket. Cash only, everything in a slightly effortless North Sea tourist flair. Doesn't have to be.

It is very expensive compared to other places. The way the Turkish waiter asked for a tip was very rude. We came with our family and did not say anything to avoid any inconvenience.

I was here two years ago & find their food was good. I’m giving low rating because they extort tourists. They didn’t charge according to the menu and don’t provide any receipt when requested. We only ordered a grilled fish, 4 pieces of garlic breads, a bottle of still water. It costs 73 euro. And the server claimed he was throwing in the free for sauces and 3 shots of alcohol which we didn’t order. A bit disappointing and we will not come again.

Nothing special in my opinion. Ate a salmon sandwich. Salmon was dried on the edges and rolls were limp. I'm wondering how much I paid for the name "Gosch" and how much for the poor quality product. ? Fresh is different. The service wasn't exactly friendly. For me it is clear that I will no longer eat a fish sandwich with salmon here. In my opinion, you could almost believe in rip-off.

Attempt #2 Update: Had to reduce from 3 to 1 star. But I don't think I'll try it again in 3 years! It was very disappointing, no comparison to Gosch on Norderney. I reduced it from 3 to 1 star because the food is still unreasonable and now the service is so unfriendly and answers rudely. Then in this day and age it is not understandable why you can't pay with a debit card...?! (Don't worry, there is an ATM nearby, fee €5) My review from 3 years ago: Actually only two but the situation saved it. We had the fish plate with potato salad and fried fish. At Gosch it's not just Lage Lage Lage but also Fett Fettig Fettiger. The taste is okay, but everything that sucks oozes. Fried fish was very sad and was completely frozen, minimal additional effort if it was freshly pulled through the breading. Finally, the water bottle at €6.50 doesn't make it any better. The service was positive, very child-friendly!

I thought it was good, it was my first time there. Waiters are friendly and accommodating. Food is great. I would recommend the prawns in garlic sauce, but the fried fish is also great.

The food and drink was good, but unfortunately no invoices were issued so there were some serious discrepancies in the billing. As a recommendation for future guests: if you don't want to pay €500 too much, have an invoice issued immediately after each order!

Had a crab roll here. Taste was great, but not accepting card in 2024 is ... odd! There's an ATM around the corner but cash only is really bad service.

First I stood in the long line to order food, but they only accepted cash (you should do a tax check here...). Then went to the ATM and stood in the back again. The food (Thai noodles with shrimps) was really not good: completely overcooked penne, swimming in a slightly spicy, red cream sauce and maybe 8-10 half-frozen "shrimps", nothing else.... No decoration, greenery etc... The pasta in the canteen is prepared more lovingly! But the best thing about the evening was the amazing sunset!

We went to Gosh last night and wanted to eat good fish in the sunset again. Of course the location is great and so far we have been satisfied. But yesterday the guy at the checkout probably preferred longer conversations with the 3 girls in front of me than taking orders quickly. And when it finally came to my turn, they were out of pasta. What I don't understand at all, on a Sunday at 6:30 p.m. How can you calculate so badly??? Well... and no one came for drinks either.

There wasn't everything on the menu. The overpriced tarte flambée had no sour cream and was completely unseasoned. The worst and most expensive we have ever experienced. The fried potatoes were oily and completely without any spices. The fried fish was good. Staff uncoordinated and overwhelmed.

I thought the worst thing was that they offer potato salad made out of buckets next to a deep fryer and serve it to customers outside. It was easily 28 degrees next to a deep fryer and next to a grill surface the salad is inedible in seconds. If you know the name of Mr. Gosch with carries and advertises then the food should look and taste reasonable, we are used to something different from the gosch chain and have always been satisfied. We would have even cooked the food we were served better at home. No card payment possible, there is an ATM but normal card holders have to pay a fee for credit cards.
